by Phil Hecken
Growing up in New York, and going to a small upstate school that played Div III football, and attending a grad school where they don’t play anymore, I never *got* big-time college football — until Uni Watch, that is. Oh sure, I remember watching The Play and The Game, and I distinctly remember seeing Hail Flutie, but still — college football was just something that was on when the pros weren’t playing. I never understood how college football rivalries could literally result in a house divided.
I never knew so much was at stake. People fought (and literally died) over their rivalries. People divorced over their rivalries. Hell, people refused to go to relatives’ weddings because rivalry games were being played. Who know people took this stuff so seriously? Well, now I do.
So, here it is — the big rivalry weekend. In the past, with the able assistance of fans or alumni, I’ve spotlighted a few of these big rivalry games: Ducks vs. Beavers, Panthers vs. Mountaineers, The Game…ahem, THE Game. There’s a ton of these games today, and I’m going to take a look at an eight-pack of them for your pleasure, and list what’s at stake — for a few of them, it’s quite a lot. So, thanks UW and all the great readers who’ve turned me into a huge fan of NCAA football.
The Iron Bowl: Alabama vs. Auburn.
What’s At Stake: For Auburn, the end of a painful season. For Alabama, a chance to play for the national title, as they’re currently 10-1 and ranked #2 in the BCS rankings. Should be an easy win, but these are always big games, even when one (or both) schools have nothing to play for. Bama needs this one to play for the SEC Championship next weekend, and if they win out, it should be a trip for them to the Orange Bowl (BCS Game) on January 7, 2013.
The Uniforms: Gorgeous! Alabama has (IMHO) the best uni in the NCAA versus Auburn. Should be a “Top 5” in the 5 & 1. Why do I like Alabama’s unis so much? Well, they remind me of my old school.
Where & When? Today, 3:30 pm ET, on CBS. The game’s in Tuscaloosa and ‘Bama is a 32 ½ point favorite.
Battle of the Palmetto State: Clemson vs. South Carolina
What’s At Stake: #13 South Carolina (9-2) and #12 Clemson (10-1) both have lots to play for. The Tigers play in the ACC and while they’re 7-1 in the Atlantic Division, FSU is also 7-1 and has clinched the division, handing the Tigers their only loss. The Gamecocks play in the SEC, and they’re 6-2 (behind both Georgia and Florida) in the SEC Eastern Division (Georgia has clinched the division). So neither team has a division title on the line, but hey, it’s the Battle for the Palmetto State and a bowl selection on the line.
The Uniforms: Good & Bad. Clemson usually goes orange/orange/white, although they have been known to go mono-orange, while the Gamecocks are as likely to wear white over garnet as they are to sport something else.
Where & When? Today, 7:00 pm, on ESPN. The game’s in Death Valley and Clemson’s a 3 ½ point favorite.
Sunshine State Rivalry: Florida vs. Florida State
What’s At Stake: Well, for one thing, this beautiful trophy. But there’s more. Florida is 10-1, ranked #4, and is 7-1 in the SEC East. Unfortunately, their one loss is to Georgia, who have won the division. However, a loss by Georgia (and some help) and it’s not inconceivable the Gators could have a shot at the National Championship. FSU, ranked #10, is also 10-1 and has wrapped up the ACC Atlantic. They, too, are hoping for a big win, but their prospects for anything more than an Orange berth are probably slim. Still, a BIG win over the Gators and the ‘Noles (with a lot of help) may have an outside shot at the big game.
The Uniforms: NICE! Despite a propensity to go mono-blue at home, the Gators will likely go orange/white/white while the ‘Noles will most assuredly (unless Nike has an am-pac uni in the works) be in their usual gold/garnet/gold. Another 5 & 1 candidate for sure.
Where & When? 3:30 pm ET, on ABC. The game’s at the Doak, and the Seminoles are 7 point favorites.
The Civil War: Oregon vs. Oregon State
What’s At Stake: I’ve written (with Mike Princip) about this game before, and for the Ducks, the stakes are still very high. A win (and some help) and they’re back in the BCS Title Game picture, and a loss and they might not even win the PAC-12 North (the Ducks are 7-1, with their one loss to Stanford, who also sit at 7-1 play at UCLA today — a win by Stanford or a loss by the Ducks means they will be sitting home next weekend). But the Ducks can’t be concerned with that game down south, they need to take care of business in their own Civil War. There’s much less at stake for the Beavers, who sit at 6-2 behind Stanford & UO. Still, they’re bowl bound and would love to crush the hopes of Eugene’s finest.
The Uniforms: Hoo boy. About the only certainty is that Oregon will wear a white top. After that, it’s a crapshoot. But so far this season, they’ve worn gray pants, black pants and white pants…will they break out the yellows today? OSU is another crapshoot — they’ve gone orange/white, orange/black and black/black, so who knows what they’ll wear. And who knows if the University of Nike has special costumes in store for either or both?
Where & When? 3:00 pm, PAC-12 Network. The game’s in Corvalis and the Ducks are 9 point favorites.
Bedlam: Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
What’s At Stake: Oklahoma’s at 8-2, 6-1 in the Big 12 behind 7-1 Kansas State, while OSU is 7-3 (5-2) sitting just beneath Oklahoma in the Big 12. Bedlam is the name of this game, and with the Sooners ranked #13 and the Cowboys ranked #21 in the BCS, the Sooners are in the drivers’ seat. Here’s where it gets interesting: Oklahoma is one of four conference teams that have a chance of tying Kansas State for the 2012 conference crown. At present, Kansas State still leads the league standings with a 7-1 overall record. OU is at 6-1 and Oklahoma State and Texas are tied for third with a record of 5-2 in the conference. For a four-way tie to happen, however, Oklahoma would have to lose to Oklahoma State, Kansas State would have to lose next weekend to Texas and Texas and Oklahoma State would have to win their final two regular season games. So yeah, there’s a lot at stake.
The Uniforms: Um, yeah. We know what we’re getting with the Sooners: Crimson and cream. It will look great. As far as OSU…they have white, gray, orange and black for both helmets and pants. At least we’ll know ahead of time they’ll be in white jerseys…right? It could be a very good looking game…
Where & When? 3:30 pm ET, on ESPN. The game’s in Norman, and the Sooners are 6 ½ point favorites.
The Game: Ohio State vs. Michigan
What’s At Stake: Sadly, not much this year. In case you weren’t looking, THE Ohio State University is 11-0, and were this any other year, they’d be competing for a spot in the BCS bowl. But, because they misbehaved under Jim Tressel, they’re playing only for pride. But still, they’d like to make new coach Urban Meyer’s first season a perfect one. The Wolverines (8-3 overall, 6-1 in the B1G) sit in second place in the Legends Division of the B1G, behind first place Nebraska, who have locked up the division and will play Wisconsin next weekend for the B1G championship. Still, this is THE Game, and that alone is enough.
The Uniforms: Hmmmm. Ok, we know Nike is giving the Buckeyes new costumes for this rivalry game. Paul wrote a bit about the in the second section of this article. I’ll need to see them in action before passing judgment, but I have some likes and dislikes. UM may also get a special rivalry costume from adidas as well. They’ve had some good looking alternates in the past though.
Where & When? 12:00 noon ET, on ABC. The game’s in the ‘shoe and the Bucks are 3 ½ point favorites.
Clean Old Fashioned Hate: Georgia vs. Georgia Tech
What’s At Stake: Despite being 6-5 overall, and 5-3 in the ACC Coastal, Tech has clinched the division and will play FSU for the title. Unranked in the BCS, Tech nonetheless will be playing for a date in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day, although it’s more likely they’ll be playing in the Russell Athletic Bowl on December 28th. Still, there is this Georgia pride thing. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, have been a pleasant surprise this year (10-1 overall, 7-1 and SEC East Champs), and find themselves (likely) squarely in the hunt the BCS game — currently ranking #3. But there is still this game to be played, before the (likely) battle with Alabama (or LSU, but that would take a miracle) for the SEC title. It’s almost a certainty that the winner of the SEC championship will be in the BCS game…almost. Georgia must take care of business first, and then worry about that other thing.
The Uniforms: Good vs. Ugly. Barring some crazy new uni (doubtful) by Nike, the UGA will be sporting their classic red/red/silver-gray combo. GT, on the other hand, wears Russell, and since they’re so far behind adidas, Nike and UA, they’ve decided the only way to get their schools noticed is to put them in clown suits. That’s actually not too bad, but the beehives & other patterns just aren’t a good look.
Where & When? 12:00 Noon ET, on ESPN. The game’s in Sanford, and the Bulldogs are 14 ½ point favorites.
“Conversation Between Wives”: Notre Dame vs. Southern California
What’s At Stake: Pretty much everything. OK, why is this game a “conversation between wives”? Read all about it. Then go and read the whole article, and you’ll know pretty much everything you need to know about this rivalry. And it just so happens that Notre Dame is 11-0, and ranked #1 in the BCS rankings. So a win today and they’re going to play for it all. But it’s not going to be a cakewalk, and the game is a road game for the Irish, who’ve had some real close games this year. Unfortunately for the country (aka, all non-ND fans), USC limps into this game at 7-4 (5-4 in the PAC 12 south and not in contention for that title), and are playing without their star QB, Matt Barkley. Still, if the Trojans don’t need the ability to knock Notre Dame out of the BCS game to motivate them, then perhaps the added bonus of playing for the Jeweled Shillelagh will.
The Uniforms: Should be good. USC will sport their classic cardinal and gold, while ND should be in their shiny golden domes, white tops, and gold pants. They’ve had a few alternate unis in the past few years, but look for them to look “normal” for this one.
Where & When? 8:00 pm ET, on ABC. The game’s in the Coliseum and the Irish are 4 ½ point favorites.
There you have it, folks. Are you ready for some football???
50 Years Ago…This Weekend
Last year, Rick Pearson took us “back in time” to bring us his look at the featured television college football match-up from 50 years ago. (If you’re not familiar with it, this was the inaugural post of “50 Years Ago” from last year — after that, it became a recurring feature on UW for the remainder of the season). Last year, Rick looked at the 1961 season, and fortunately for us, he “uni tracked” the games from 1962 as well, documenting the game via his “kid cards”. Each week this fall, he’ll do the same, again.
We’ve been paying attention to Ohio State-Michigan for a long time, haven’t we. … We’ve also seen both these unis before this season. … Buckeyes in their exterior padding helmets. … Wolverines with the “M” on the sleeves and all-black shoes with black shoelaces (and, yes, the helmet TV numbers should be maize). … Ohio State must have been tougher because a) they didn’t add stirrup socks for this November game, and b) they won, 28-0. … Neither Bob Middleton nor Harvey Chapman played pro football.
Thanks Rick! Great job with that as always.
Colorize This!
Occasionally, I will be featuring wonderful, high-quality black and white photographs that are just begging to be colorized.
It’s been about a month since our last Colorize This! feature, and there are a bunch to run today and tomorrow. Some wonderful stuff, so let’s get started straight away.
Up first is John Turney, who has a bunch for us (John’s not much for descriptions):
Lions at Bears
Sammy & Eddie on the Sidelines
Bill Dudley versus the Redskins
Moving on, we have Gary Chanko, who has both a photo and a story:
Phil,
I was looking for information on former Eagles great Tommy McDonald and came across this 1963 photo. The related newspaper article deals with concussions and suggests face mask removal might help improve player safety!
Kelly green, silver wings … hoping for a come back soon.
Eagles fans will recognize the players (from left) Sonny Jurgensen, Pete Retzlaff, Timmy Brown, and Tommy McDonald – four Eagle greats. Sure could use their talents today.
Gary
We close today with a request for a colorization, from John Livewell. It’s a great photo, but it might be a tad small — nevertheless, would look great in color:
Phil,
Hello from Philadelphia.
Paul: I hope you are feeling better”¦
I saw a great picture on the this blog. Looks like it would be a great project for an colorization artist.
LOOK AT THOSE HATS IN THE STANDS.
LOOK AT THOSE STIRRUPS.
John G. Livewell
Thanks all! Great job, of course, by John & Gary. I’ll be back with more tomorrow!
Uni Tweaks Concepts
We have another new set of tweaks, er…concepts today. After discussion with a number of readers, it’s probably more apropos to call most of the reader submissions “concepts” rather than tweaks. So that’s that.
So if you’ve concept for any sport, or just a tweak or wholesale revision, send them my way.
Please do try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per image — if you have three uniform concepts in one image, then obviously, you can go a little over, but no novels, OK? OK!. You guys have usually been good with keeping the descriptions pretty short, and I thank you for that.
Like the colorizations, I’m going to run these as inline pics — click on each one to enlarge.
And so, lets begin:
First up is Brian K., who has a newish look for the soon-to-be-redesigned Brownies:
Phil:
Here is my redesign. Nothing drastic. Implement the brownie elf into accessory for the QB, add brown stripes to shoulders, outline numbers in orange and change the shape of the helmet stripes to the Buffalo style that starts wide and changes towards the rear of the helmet into a narrower line and point. Also added brown pants which I realize were not a popular choice a couple years ago, but I believe they dropped the ball on that potential enhancement by not including vertical stripes which gave larger sized players the appearance of being brown blobs. Hope to see this posted on your sight!
Brian
Jax Florida
Next up is Ryan Altenbach, with a new take on the Bucs:
Phil,
Played around with the Bucs logo/uniforms and thought I’d send it in. I’ve always loved their logo, but it was too messy. I cleaned up the logo and inverted the flag for another secondary, deepened the red in the uni, and took out the bronze. I put the “Fire the cannon” logo in the back of the collar, since I know Nike is so fond of that kind of thing. Threw in the black alternate and took out the TV numbers for a more plain look.
Ryan Altenbach
Our final submitter today is Coleman Mullins, who’s been bitchin to get this one into the queue. It is, of course, WVU:
Phil,
I’M TWEAKIN!
So, after a few hand drawn sketches and re-designs, and then some AMAZING digital help and wizardry from the one and only Tim E. O’Brien, I give you the joint operation WVU-tweak.
I wanted something traditional with a hint of modern touches. I kept the current pant design, but added the Flying WV into it. The jersey is a little more traditional, with sleeve stripes(!) and an interwoven Flying WV. (seeing a trend here?) Other than that it is pretty much business as usual. You don’t mess with the helmet, trust me.
I owe Tim E. more thanks than I could ever show. Stand up guy for sure.
Can’t wait for the feedback,
-ColemanPS. Screw your 50 word limit. Heh heh.
And that’s it for today. Back with more next time.
“Benchies” first appeared at U-W in 2008, and has been a Saturday & Sunday feature here for the past two years.
They are, after all, facing a long and brutal winter…

Stirrup Fridays…
Because we love the stirrup here at Uni Watch, this section is devoted to those of us who sport the beautiful hose on Fridays — a trend popularized many years ago by Robert P. Marshall, III. For many of us, it’s become a bit of an obsession, but a harmless one — a reflection of our times. Where we once had Friday ties, which has been replaced by Casual Friday — we now have Stirrup Fridays. It’s an endearingly simple concept — no matter where you work (or even if you don’t) — break out a fresh pair of rups to compliment (or clash with) your Friday attire.
We’ve got a very special set this week, since Comrade Marshall has graciously offered the UW rup as a *weekly* prize in the Stirrup Fridays ensemble. So, let’s have a look at the selections this week, and at the end, the winner will be announced:
Ray Wroblewski:
Phil
Wore these (Bruins) on my bike ride. Almost nothing is as exciting as an envelope containing socks from Marshall. Better stop using my pants as a chain cleaner.
Ray
Nathan Stewart:
Good morning Comrades!
I wasn’t sure whom to send the photos for the contest, so I’ve included you both. Please find attached my submission:
I teach at a public high school and Fridays are our school spirit days. I’ve worn these stirrups before on Friday’s but thought the last day before Thanksgiving break would be the perfect opportunity to really showcase my spirit (school colors are purple/silver/white/black)! That is why I chose the purple “Northwestern” stirrups. I did get a few disapproving looks – one from my department chair (must be a pajama-ist) – so after first period, I ditched the high cuffs. One photo is of me in my room and the other is at my duty post in the hall before first period.
Viva la revolucion,
Nate Stewart
Rob Ullman:
Phil, RPM,
I had this great idea to send photos of myself running my first Richmond Half-Marathon this past Saturday in my dazzling early 70s Buccos stirrups, my lucky pair from several past 5 and 10Ks. However, as I road-tested a bit, my gut told me that running the full 13.1 with that loop under my arch might be asking for trouble, so at the last minute, I opted to stick with basic white. For my part, I had a great race, finishing in 2:04:17… But my look was sorely lacking. I’ve attached a few photos from past races, anyway!
Keep up the great work.
Rob U.
Mike Apitz:
Phil,
Attached is a photo of my son, Mike, (taking ground balls at 3rd base during pregame practice) playing Little League baseball. Although he played on the Phillies, the red, white, and blue stirrups of the Red Sox made him a sartorial standout.
Jim Apitz
Chris Chaussee:
Phil,
My daughter played t-ball this past summer(she’s 5). And along with giving the girls on the team visors instead of regular ball caps like the boys got, they gave out solid color socks to the team. So I went on Ebay and found these stirrups.
I asked Paul, and he was kind enough to send me a link to a video on how to properly blouse the pants. The rest of the team basically went pajama-pants, but I couldn’t get on board with that.
Chris Chaussee
Tom Denne:
Phil:
I waited until last Saturday’s USC / UCLA game at the Rose Bowl to bust out my new Bruin stirrups – best tailgate attire ever! Add in a U-C…L-A! win, the rare SoCal rain was even bearable.
Viva la Stirrup!
-Tom Denne
Pete Woychick:
Hi Phil””
I’m attaching a couple of two-fers (colorizations / contest entries) and a bonus stirrup image.
• First up, in honor of The Game, Betty Grable roots for an undefeated season and””more importantly””a win against That Team Up North. Her bullhorn looks a bit like Brutus’ shirt. (I know Our Illustrious Leader is a Big Ten guy, and I’m not above a bit of pandering”¦)
• Next, what’s better than Marilyn? Yep, Marilyn in stirrups!
• Finally, everyone knows Leonardo was a genius, so it shouldn’t be surprising to learn he endorsed (or perhaps even invented) the stirrup.Cheers!
””Pete
John K:
Phil,
Wearing RPM’s Paczki Day stirrups for the Thanksgiving version of Stirrup Friday. The orange and brown of the St. Louis Browns ‘rups might seem more like T-day colors, but the old-style athletic gold on these is a good pie/pastry look. Hope that everyone has a great day.
John K
And that ends today’s look at Stirrup Friday — all of you who participate, send me your pics and a brief (~50 words) description of their relevance, and I’ll run ’em here on Saturday (and sometimes Sunday too!).
And who will be the winner of this week’s UW rup giveaway? Stay tuned. The winner will be revealed below.
If you’re not a member of Stirrup Nation and want to join, just visit Comrade Marshall’s house of hose (and you can see the available selections here) or if you have any questions about the availability of stirrups, drop him a line at rpmarshallart@gmail.com.
So, comrades — why don’t you pick up a pair or three and show us your rups!
OK? OK!
And now…a few words from Comrade Marshall…
Greetings Comrades,
I know this was a holiday week, but I want to thank those who went that extra mile this week. We had a couple of cute kids, a wonderful UCLA sighting in context at a tailgate before a big victory, which would have been the winner but Pete Woychick spent a lot of time colourizing stirrups into some shots, so if you have been following the revolution at all you know how much I love that. So congrats Pete, you are our first uni watch stirrup winner! Drop me a line and let me know where to send your revolutionary booty. With the holidays coming up, I suspect we can get some fantastic shots, I look forward to seeing what people come up with, and I will continue to give out stirrups to a worthy winner every week.
All entries that did not win are eligible in future weeks, or may help for a lifetime achievement composite stirrup computer championship win. But feel free to send in more — you’re always eligible until you win!
A couple of quick notes: TCK sent the latest shipment tuesday, but with the holiday shipping schedule, I expect them early next week, so if you have anything pending with me from the “new” selection, there is the news. As for new selections, we will tackle that next week. so until then…
From each according their stirrvp, to each according their strype,
Comrade Marshall
СпаÑибо Comrade. And what better way to send this post off than to have one last look at Greta?
That’s almost it, but two quick things on the Buckeyes, since today is their last game of the year. The first comes from Larry Bodnovich, with this find on the 1928 game with UM. A pertinent quote from that article: “The Ohio players wore bright scarlet jerseys with gray pants. Their brilliant jerseys shone with dazzling effect in the sunlight. Michigan’s team presented an odd contrast in color. Its players surged on the field wearing dull blue jerseys and old-fashioned moleskins. Michigan followed Ohio State on the field.”
And then, there are these two great videos of the infamous “Snow Bowl”
and
And that WILL do it for this fine Saturday of rivalry football. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving — I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land (with apologies to Jon Stewart).
Catch you all tomorrow!
“I’ll never have kids. All they do is break your heart.”
–Paul, upon hearing that JTH’s son had chosen a purple cast
Virginia vs. Virginia Tech doesn’t make the cut?
Neither team has really ever made much of a national presence so outside of Virginia, who cares? When the only thing really at stake (other than bragging rights) is that VT can be bowl eligible with a win, I’d say it’s a pretty moot game.
That being said, I’ll be at the game. Hope VT doesn’t try another failed helmet like last week. And hope Mike London doesn’t dress like a GI Joe.
i went to virginia for grad school, and i have to say that UVa football is enough to put even the most die-hard college football fan off the game for years.
i used to love college football. now every time i see a game i get flashbacks of the hoos losing to william and mary.
I have zero sympathy, man: My two alma maters are a school that doesn’t even play football and University of Minnesota. And people wonder why the gridiron bores me.
actually, i had 10 games originally selected, and va/va tech was #9 and indiana/purdue (they play for an old oaken bucket) was #10…but it was long enough with eight (sorry) — i could have put in 20 games for this one
Leave the UVA analysis to that guy with the “sabre” site. I better thank him for his service before I hit “Submit Comment” or risk incuring the wrath of a blistering retort. So, like, thanks.
Man, you know you read Uni Watch too much when you see that picture of Greta and the first thing you think of is “sweet stirrups!”
That’s what I thought too. Great comment.
I’m hoping UW will have some coverage of the 100th Grey Cup game tomorrow! Not every day a championship celebrates a centennial. #CFL
Missouri/Kansas was an oldie and a doozy. It’s roots were stained with actual blood.
Conference shifting is soulless. Money always wins.
you over simplify. texas made the playing ground unfair by not sharing with their conference brothers, don’t blame the conferences, blame austin. it is why nebraska, texas a&m, missouri, and colorado left.
as for actual blood, sure, and osu-um is over toledo.
MLB Network is running a new series called “Baseball Seasons”. It’s a great thing for uni-watchers.
Yesterday saw color footage of the White Sox in their white stirrups in the 1959 W-S, footage that confirmed that they did, indeed, go back to the black stirrups for game 5 in L.A.
Anyway, if anyone wants to get a look at the bumblebee Pirates, the 1979 season begins at 11 a.m. EST today.
That man has the worst case of elf crotch
Ohio State-Michigan is not “The Game.”
Nope
Actually…link
I can vouch that the Wikipedia article is bogus. I have been to 16 men’s hockey games between Harvard and Cornell (and watched another one on TV last weekend) and have never heard anyone call it “The Game.”
for anyone reading who hasn’t refreshed in the past few minutes, i inadvertently left out “50 Years Ago Today” when compiling this post — it’s in there now (if you can find it, lol)…
not surprisingly, 50 years ago “the game” was well, “the game” on tv, too
link about The Game in 1962.
that was when the buckeyes trounced the wolverines 28-0 in cowlumbus, right?
The last time I went to The Game, the Yale Precision Marching Band burnt a Harvard flag during the half-time skit.
I’ll also note that Harvard’s cheating just gets more blatant every year…
“The last time I went to The Game, the Yale Precision Marching Band burnt a Harvard flag during the half-time skit.”
~~~
when did ohio state let guest bands perform at their halftime show?
One game that should be on this list if not for conference realignment and the Pac-12’s stupid scheduling rules: BYU-Utah. Something crazy happens every year.
If Florida makes it to the title game … well, let’s hope that doesn’t happen. In 2012, when everything is quantified, analyzed and shared on the Internet, the BCS computer ranking system makes use of none of this information. Like stats, or even margin of victory! Because the BCS doesn’t want teams “running up the score.” Oh, irony, you bitter pill. Through 15 seasons of BCS action, no team embodies this ideal better than the 2012 Florida Gators, a team so kind and sportsman-like that it almost steadfastly refuses to score. Thus, do the Gators accept their reward, a No. 2 ranking in two of the six computer systems.
If the Gators are involved in the title game, I’ll be doing something else.
Love the sleeve stripes on the WVU concept.
Thanks!
Yes, Alabama does have crisp, classic uniforms that are essentially unchanged since the days of Namath, Sloan, Stabler, Trammel, etc. If they took the names off the jerseys, they would be almost identical the those 1960s unis. One thing Bama seems to have done this year to really “go classic” is go back to WHITE crews with their black cleats. For the last few years, they had been doing the black sock-black shoe thing. But the white socks this year really set off the black shoes. CLASSIC!
Black cleats? You better look closer. I love the classic look as well, but today Bama is wearing multi-colored shoes. Too bad.
Nice uni tweaks! I also love the quote to end today’s article!
What???? The Browns are “soon to be redesigned”??? I must’ve missed that.
Seriously?
Well, the closest thing I can find to a source is this: link You know that famous look, right? Who doesn’t? The orange helmets, the lack of a logo on it, the simplicity of it all? It could – could – be on its way out. ”Will we change uniforms? I don’t know,” he said. ”But it is a marketing world.”
So… you know… new owner, “branding”, corporate douchebaggery, “marketing”, blah, blah, blah…
“The Game” is much more divided the closer you get to the state border. Here in Columbus it’s all Buckeyes. Up in Toledo, where I’m originally from, it’s nearly a 50/50 split. The whole rivalry thing was much more fun before I moved.
Growing up in Minnesota, either Ohio school might as well have been from another country; I’m convinced that nobody from Ohio has ever lived in Minnesota, Iowa, or Wisconsin. But one bit of culture shock moving to Our Nation’s Capital, particularly the Northern Virginia part of it, was that not only is there such a thing as Ohio State University, but that roughly one-half of all adults with college degrees attended school there. Who knew? But that still leaves the question, what the heck is a University of Ohio? Do Bobcat alumni all still live in Ohio, or move to New England instead of the Mid-Atlantic or something? Meanwhile, not only does nobody out here care about Iowa-Iowa State, or Iowa-Minnesota, I’m never certain that they even know that Iowa and Minnesota are states in the Union at all.
I’m convinced that nobody from Ohio has ever lived in Minnesota, Iowa, or Wisconsin.
Well, duh… why would we want to move to someplace even worse? ;)
…and obviously the Ohio University alumni have made their way to North Carolina for whatever reason… surely you’ve heard of the Charlotte Bobcats…
well, the jeff, didn’t realize you were a buckeye, too…i also live in columbus area…
i wonder how many other uni-watchers are native buckeyes…?
o…h…
I’m from Columbus and was at The Game today!
Saw something odd on the MLB Network special about the 1978 season. They had a clip of Gaylord Perry of the Padres, and he was wearing the white jersey with yellow pants. Never saw that combination in 1978, maybe it was a one off.
In 1978, the Padres did the whole mix and match thing, like the Pirates, with brown, yellow and white shirts and pants. Pretty sure they only did it one year.
Oregon is wearing this today: link
YES!
What the hell? Oregon’s wearing team colors? What universe am I in?
Oh yea, gettin’ jiggy with the water transfer print & paint, ala link
osu in orange over white…ducks in yellow/white/yellow
good looking game, wish i could actually see it
great job today skipper, i really enjoyed that. i can’t help but feel a little frog in my throat and a little pride to hear you talk about college football…CorC!!!
good luck my michigan brother. that is until noon, then you can cram it with walnuts. on the other hand, we are going to look like a bunch of super charged comic book clowns, so my hate will be tempered with self loathing, a condition i have become all to accustom to.
Go Buckeyes beat michigan.
Very happy Buckeye fan here. Buckeyes beat Michigan 26-21 and go 12-0. Urban Meyer in his first season back home on Ohio.
The unis today were ok. Fans wanted Buckeyes on the helmet. Kind of mixed feelings about that. Would liked to have seen the chrome helmet more. But it was not sunny. And I did like those Buckeyes.
The unis were not a drastic change. Everybody knew it was Ohio State. I still wish they would bring back the classic gray sleeve stripes.
Great UniWatch today. Colorizations finally back. Ricko’s Ohio State Michigan kid card. Although as he knows the numbers were white. I like how Ricko did the padded helmet.
I will enjoy the rest of the college football day.
no alts for meechigan, and OSU has put special green buckeyes on their lids
So it almost looks like a normal game, the Buckeyes are just a bit shinier than usual.
The Buckeye faithful really shouldn’t whine too much about these uniforms, especially compared to the funky number fonts and red or white helmets of the past couple years.
wine? they are stupid jeff. change for no reason is stupid.
and skip, the buckeye gigi’s are always green, just dark, not kelly. this might be the only thing i actually like, but it is still freaking stupid so i hate it. now if they want to make their buckeyes a brighter if not chrome green all the time, i am all for it.
shit. there was a big play and i looked up and lost my train of thought, should have started “wine? it’s a beer day”…
sorry, i shouldn’t try to comment during this, that is more stupid the the bucks uni’s.
green? really?
i’ve never actually seen one, so of course i’ll defer to one who has, but this sure looks like this, whereas this (74 replica) with the larger leaves is what i remember
Oh give me a break. They look like the Buckeyes. Fine, they’ve got silver numbers instead of white and the helmet is more metallic and the stripes are wider than normal. If anything, I think they look better today than they usually do. I’ll say this again: THEY LOOK LIKE THE BUCKEYES. They aren’t wearing black, they aren’t wearing pink, they aren’t wearing neon green, they pretty much look like what a “scarlet and gray” team should look like, assuming one accepts that gray and silver are basically the same color with or without a metallic finish.
For that matter, give me a *good* reason for a sports team to change uniforms – and “it’s ugly” doesn’t count because beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.
so i can’t help but think…
sure, they could be worse, sure they could be better. but buckeyes shouldn’t whine? THE french tickler, you really grind me. when i see these buckeye uniforms i want to spit. who needs them to get up for a game against the wolverines? the players? then you are pathetic? the fans? then you are pathetic. it is freaking michigan, this is what you bust out against indiana. the kind of person that thinks this is a good idea is the kind of person that thinks glow in the dark condoms will really bring the spice. trick plays? sure. hard hits? sure. but glow in the dark condoms are truck stop quarter stupid, and bring no spice in either case.
Ok… I get that you don’t like the idea of “special” uniforms… but how would feel about these uniforms becoming the Buckeyes’ normal attire?
I can’t really disagree that the one-off uniforms are sorta stupid – but they’ve become the new normal, so you can’t just bash them solely for that. That horse has already left the barn, learned to speak English , and started a family. Does the uniform look good? That’s the question you must ask yourself.
all i can say is this, THE
you better hope wreck never attends an alumni weekend
Whatever Phil, I’d just have to buy him a beer or 6 and make him watch a few episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Did Nike run out of the special buckeye leaves for Ohio State? link
It looks like some players have multiple types of leaves: link
sorry, the game and all..
1) i ain’t had a drop today jeff. and as far as what phil said, i can see no reason to come back to columbus.
2) i accept it because someone says i have to suck it up as the new normal? that seems kind of foolish doesn’t it? and i personally don’t find the interesting parts of being a uni watcher anticipating the next pile of shit that comes out of these companies, i leave that to others.
3)no i didn’t like the uniform even if i could remove how stupid it was to have in the first place. the pants had a truncated tripe. the jersey had ridiculously large stripes hat appeared in a triangle because of the jersey cut, the numbers looked horrible, and were waaaay to big. the helmet had a black face mask, the stripes were way to huge. not to mention the centre helmet stripe looked pink. did i leave anything out? there was not one thing that i would call an improvement. EXCEPT the brighter green buckeyes.so no, i would not want to see them wear that.
@Shaner, those buckeye leaves are all the same color. They’re chrome though, so in the sun they appear brighter than in the shade.
Great look for the Buckeyes today. Question is, are those decal stripes, or a WTP/paint concoction on those lids?
The silver-gray numbers on the Ohio State jerseys are nice. They should bring that element to their usual jerseys.
I’d like to see the numbers trimmed in something, because especially on a cloudy day the numbers are a hair difficult to read.
tOSU’s uniforms are not NEARLY as disastrous as some of the Nike costumes have been.
Black, perhaps?
I can barely tell the difference between these OSU uniforms and their regular ones.
Once again, fantastic vintage video from Larry B.
One of my favorite late 40s football pics, link wearing what could be a MacGregor Goldsmith, or Wilson D model winged leather helmet, with a very early link.
Actually Mike I just sent in the link for the Brilliant scarlet jerseys.
Another person linked the 2 video clips yesterday in the comments section.
Nice find on that 46 Michigan helmet.
Re: Bills – I never understood the Bills widening helmet stripe, it just looks off to me.
Re: Ryan Altenbach Bucs – Where’s the orange? Looks a bit Falconish. I don’t know if two rivals should look so closely alike.
The Big Ten Network killed what little interest I had in NCAAF.
Eagles in kelly & silver: cannot happen fast enough.
I wasn’t gonna touch the cream sicles, those are too legendary for my meager skills. Those stay. And I like the idea of TB stealing atlanta’s colors, makes that divisional rivalry heat up a tad.
Great write up today, Phil…Boomer!
There seems to be a slight issue with the hyperlinks using Google Chrome on a Mac. First time I clicked a hyperlink, a pop-up ad appeared. I X’ed that out and tried clicking some hyperlinks again, and nothing would happen. The only way to view what the hyperlinks linked to was by using the menu that appears when you control-click and then choose “Open Link in New Tab” or “Open Link in New Window”. This glitch happened both last night and today, but strangely everything seems to be working fine now. I don’t know how pop-up ads work, but it seems like the pop-up, even after X’ing it out, somehow prevented Chrome from being able to show what the hyperlinks linked to after clicking them. Weird. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up about this.
Anyway, you’ll be proud to know Phil that Hamilton had the most bizarre football play *by design* I have ever seen in my life. It was a flea flicker turned option pitch turned underhand forward pass–and it resulted in a touchdown! The ball went from the center, to the quarterback, to the fullback, back to the quarterback, to the halfback, and then to the tight end. Hamilton was down by several touchdowns in the fourth quarter and this play happened on Fourth and Goal so I guess you could say desperate times call for desperate measures. The people I was watching the game with all gasped when we witnessed this play and we all looked at each other like “What the hell did we just witness???”
Speaking of The Game… the Buckeyes’ O at the 50 yard line is in 2 different shades of red. Is that normal?
…also a Michigan player with an M on his socks. Unfortunately I’m not set up to capture screenshots.
Perhaps it’s that the artificial turf is brushed, like grass, to get the dark/light alternating effect.
Well, it definitely matches the alternating dark/light greens – they have the darker red on the darker green and the lighter on lighter. I’ve seen plenty of teams do the dark/light green thing on the field, but I don’t recall any other teams actually altering their logo colors to mimic the field like that.
I don’t think they actually changed the color. I’m guessing they had one shade of red and the “brushing” just changed the logo along with the field.
With the derisive use of “costume” used multiple times in today’s lede, I was disappointed not to see one use of “candy up”.
Also, Go Irish!
I think that “candy up” only applies to making uniform changes which would be improvements (like adding stripes to Texas would be), it doesn’t apply to every uniform modification or one-off special uniform.
Texas does have stripes under the TV numbers. Or are you advocating they pull a Princeton?
Wrong. “Candying up” is adding inappropriate embellishment to a uniform. Remember Darrell Royal’s statement and its context; he described football uniforms as work clothes.
Adding stripes to horribly boring uniform is not an inappropriate embellishment – it’s an improvement. I stand by my earlier comment.
Nice job on that WVU concept Coleman. I think I could get behind those Flying WV shoulder stripes.
Thanks! I was hoping I’d see a comment on them from you. I think those sleeves could look great if jerseys, ya know, still had sleeves.
About 99% sure Nike accidentally sent Ohio State undershirts meant for Virginia Tech. Those are maroon and orange.
One year quite some time ago, Clemson broke out the orange pants for the first time in school history for the South Carolina game, and won of course. Ever since then, the tigers have traditionally only worn orange pants for big games. They’re supposed to be reserved for teams that deserve them (like Nebraska’s black shirts), but that hasn’t really been the case.
Thankfully, Dabo has returned sanity to Clemson uniforms. These past two seasons the Tigers have worn orange over white at home and white over white on the road. Gone are the purple jerseys and pants that gave Clemson a different uni combo for every game. Gone are the weird piping/stripes on the jerseys and pants. Simple stripes have taken their place. Yet they still get talented recruits!
The orange pants have yet to make an appearance. That may change tonight, but it might not. Nice that the head coach is calling the shots, as opposed to Nike.
bedlam: osu in all white
State Penn with uni #s on the helmet
psu wearing tv’s on their helmets = left side only, all #42
Tribute to Michael Mauti, out with a knee injury. Reminds me of the 1967-1974 helmets…sorta…
Wyoming and SDSU looking good today! Wyopokes in their Brown helmets! Nothing really objectionable about their look
They have the Cowboy on the left and a W on the right.
just getting to this one now…UF in a nice orange/white/orange … definitely a top contender for the 5 & 1
Minnesota in athletic gold jerseys and pants vs. Michigan in white over white.
Pretty good lookin’ game.
OOOOO – Full Cheddar! Awesome!
Fresno State Air Force in color on color game on NBCSports
Maybe too much color for one of our posters from last week.
Why not have a 10 & 2 with all of the nice looking games this weekend! I know it’s a pipe dream from me.
ucla looking classic in their mono-navy blue clownsuits with navy lids
for their rivalry game (aside from USC, that is)…still…
if i weren’t pulling so strongly for the ducks, i’d say stanford should be winning on that and that alone
clemson in orange/orange/white
scar in all white
wow…nice lookin game
I was shocked as well! Good on the ole ball coach. I love UCLA’s mono-navys. Some great contrasting ball game looks today! MAN!
I don’t care for UCLA’s look at all. They have managed to slowly ruin one of the best looks over the years. Truncated stripes, super stretchies and now this crap.
Agreed, on all counts.
Atrocious. Stanford saving this game from being the &1.
And I didn’t care for the all whites much either. Call me grumpy.
Dream Matchup – ECU in their mono huckleberry vs UCLA in their mono midnight.
This sums up UCLA nicely.
i donno…if there was ever a week that the duckies deserved a consideration for the 5 of the 5 & 1…
this is it
who says school colors are underrated?
How many teams went mono-*insert color here* today or these past few days?
Ï€
more like ∞
not log base e?
aTm/Mizzou game: referee is injured so a line judge now wearing the white hat. Don’t see that too often.
The Adirondack Phantoms of the American Hockey League are wearing Movember jerseys tonight. Apparently, the Las Vegas Wranglers of the (I’m still calling it) East Coast Hockey League will be doing likewise:
link
Is it no longer called the ECHL? The website is still the same. Even if they did change it, its kind of ridiculous to insist on calling it the East Coast Hockey League when you’re referencing a team from Las Vegas.
also the link you provided links to an Oops page.
I think ECHL is an ex-acronym, i.e.: it no longer stands for anything.
I can’t believe I’ll be rooting for Ala-fucking-bama… I feel icky, thank god that game is so ridiculously removed from Jan. 1, it wont ruin the rest of my bowl season.
As a Georgia Tech fan I’ll to root for Bama twice, so at least you aren’t in that predicament.
“Icky?” How precious.
San Jose State in Mono-cheddar as well today. La Tech looking good in this game, too.
