Welcome to the first Sunday Morning Uni Watch of the season. I won’t even waste any more of your time with an intro, because my SMUW buddy, Terry Duroncelet is back with the first of what is always the highlight of the College Football Uniform Watching season. So…here’s TJ with his…
Sunday Morning Uni Watch — Week I
By Terry Duroncelet
Guess who you guys are stuck with for the next four months again? =3
I’m back for another year of bringing you my college football observations… plus the occasional pony reference once in a while. I’ll be honest, I thought that there would be a delay in bringing you guys the first SMUW of the season because of this. I didn’t know if I was gonna lose power for an extended period of time, but it turns out that I experienced six power outages, all of which lasted a half-second at the most, so it was only about three seconds of no power overall. But overall, I lucked out (except for all of the branches that I have to clean up in my front and back yard -_- ), and I’m ready for a second year of Sunday Morning Uni Watch. With those things out of the way…
Let’s kick this thing off with Thursday’s games:
-Vanderbilt took the field in their new uniforms against South Carolina. I rather like the full-Vader look for Vandy, but that’s because everything matches. Would’ve been a tragedy if they came out in mono-black with white helmets.
-Rice… *sigh*. It’s sad to see such a wonderful uniform be sullied by the TechFit bug (although I dig the mural-shirts). Speaking of, UCLA (the Owls’ opponents) continues to wear TechFit this year, which means more UCLA Stripes Nubs. But other changes include: The navy blue outline from last two years is gone from this year’s white set. My response to that? Another thing about the numbers is they look to have to a slightly-rounded look to them. Not bad, actually. And this may be the result of a bad memory (or an old T.V.), but it looks like that the Bruins’ pants are slightly darker this year compared to last year’s beige pants. A lateral push overall, but I just don’t recognize the Bruins all that well these days.
-UMass vs. UConn. UMass football is now an FBS program, so you gotta look the part of an FBS program. While I’m not a fan of the bodysuit fabric, this is a huge improvement over what they used to wear. They — like most Adidas TechFit-wearing teams — had the tiny T.V. numbers on the “sleeves”.
-BYU’s unis look the same in their game against Washington State, except that they switched to the Nike Pro Combat v3.0 template (Flywire collar included). I noticed that they have a pennant patch that says “NCAA” (hard to see, but it’s there). I know that they’re an Independent, but I’ve never seen any of the FBS Independents wear a pennant patch for that. Has this happened in the past before and I just never noticed?
-Minnesota came out in their new unis against UNLV, and they look every as bit as awesome on the field as they did in the promo vids! And that’s just the mono-white look. Imagine how their gold pants would look! A nice way to introduce yourselves to the Silver State. Something that I noticed while watching the game was Keanon Cooper wearing deceased player Gary Tinsley’s #51 instead of his usual #4. There was no NOB, and his normal number was on the back of his helmet, so I’m assuming that the number will be worn by a different player each game. Cooper was Tinsley’s roommate. Also, you know about those custom-made sleeves on the Nike site? Some players had those with “GT51” on them in memory of Tinsley. UNLV had new uniforms in addition to the new helmets mentioned a while back. A nice upgrade from last year, although I’m disappointed that they still use that crappy Athletic Block font. Get a real block font, and you have a perfect uni! The Rebel Girls performed a routine during the game wearing these shirts. Are these normal? Overall, a nice-looking game.
Moving on to Friday:
-NC State and Tennessee went color vs. color in the first of two Chick-fil-A Kickoff games. The contrast wasn’t as brutal as I thought it was gonna be, since the Wolfpack went full-blood clot, instead of white/red/white. Tennessee had those rather cool mural-shirts with the checkered endzone pattern on them.
-Michigan State and Boise State faced off in a pretty sweet-looking game. The Broncos wore their best road uniform (IMO); blue helmets (big bronco on one side, helmet number on the other), white jerseys, and orange pants. Another thing of note is that instead of using last year’s Nike Pro Combat jersey tops as the full-time roads, they went out and got new white jersey tops, which have a normal collar logo instead of the shield w/ logo, and matching sleeves instead of the right sleeve making up the “missing” part of the Nike PC helmets. I kinda miss last year’s white tops, but they still looked sweet =) As for Michigan State, I have to admit that I don’t hate the wraparound effect on that pant “stripe” as much as I used to, but it’s still a weird look. The Spartans also wore their alternate green tops.
-San Jose State played Stanford using their new helmets with the spear as a helmet stripe (best shot I could find). Not bad. Good on ya, Spartans.
And now for the true day of college goodness… SATURDAY.
-Navy and Notre Dame played in that highly-anticipated game in Ireland, and HOLY COW!!! Their uniforms were… the same. Okay, to be fair, Navy technically did get new uniforms. They moved their current uniform to the Nike Pro Combat v3.0 template, Flywire collar and all. This resulted in the collar going from gold last year to navy blue this year. The “NAVY” on the front is smaller (that’s literally the best pic I could find), more like last year’s Pro Combat unis, although they still use that crappy Athletic Block font (side note: I mentioned that font earlier. Is “Athletic Block” the correct name for that particular block font, or is there a different name? Please and thank you in advance). They also had navy socks while playing against the Fighting Irish, who still have the best helmets in college football (IMO). ND of course had plenty of flag-themed gear to flash. The pants look darker than last year, which is a nice improvement.
-My favorite thing in college football besides ND golden domes are Northwestern’s new uniforms. So awesome! =D I don’t even mind the missing notch in the the side panels. I especially liked how almost about every player was on board with the undershirts. Their opponents, the Syracuse Orange, looked great as usual, so you have a very handsome game on your hands.
-I knew that Ohio’s green helmets were gonna look pretty good, but they well-exceeded my expectations and then some when I tuned in to see them play Penn State! When I tell you I Flutter-squeed so hard… Dear Ohio: please don’t get rid of those green helmets with the tiny white stripe… ever. Sincerely, me (also a great shot of that blue ribbon). As for Penn State, this is gonna take some getting used to.
-Bowling Green went full-Stormtrooper against Florida. Not bad.
-Iowa vs Northern Illinois: Iowa joins BYU and Navy as one of the teams that moved their current uniform to the Pro Combat template, only they’re using v2.0, which means no Flywire shoulders (v1.0) or collar (v3.0). I personally think that they wear this look a little better than the Steelers. The front numbers look smaller than usual (props to #32 for his cleats).
-We move on to the Nebraska/Southern Miss game. I know that Nebraska’s stripes have a tendency to arch a bit, but this year in particular, they look like shoulder stripes. What’s even weirder is that they might be able to wear “shoulder” stripes better than UCLA IMO. I’m sure you can feel the various degrees of “WAT” coming from me through your computer screen.
-Nice to see that Wisconsin hasn’t been bitten by the TechFit bug yet on a full-time basis.
-Remember those orange helmets that Virginia wore against Auburn in last year’s bowl game? They revived those in their game against Richmond.
-Cal wore white helmets and pants with their blue jerseys against Nevada. Eh, it’s a so-so look.
-Ole Miss wore their red tops.
-Temple went with UnderArmour’s current pant, which means that a small notch was cut off near the bottom. Lame, but those pants still look cool. And how sick does ‘Nova look?
-Here’s another chicken kickoff game for ya: Auburn vs. Clemson. And just like last night’s game between Tennessee and NC State, this was a color vs. color matchup. Funny how Auburn’s last game was a color vs. color game in the Chick-fil-A bowl.
-Stop the presses: Oklahoma State finally wore their normal white/orange/white look after not doing so last season!
-LSU’s SEC patch is on their collars this year, which I do remember them doing before, but I can’t remember when.
-Florida State has some new cleats, socks, and gloves (promo shots for those and USC’s new gear here).
-USC has new uniforms as well as new footwear. They — like others mentioned earlier — moved their current design to the Pro Combat template (v3.0 in this case). Also in that game, Hawai’i removed the player names from their jerseys (that’s also a nice shot of that gold-ish facemask on USC that they were rumored to have).
-Mississippi State wore their new uniforms against Jackson State. A good number of players wore the ribboned/bannered undershirts, but not all. Still a neat uniform, though.
-UTEP went full-carrot against Oklahoma.
-What do you get when you teach two Oregon Ducks the Metamoran Fusion technique, have one wear this uniform with the facemask replaced by the one Georgia wore against Boise State last year, and the other wear the 2012 Rose Bowl uni? You get what they wore against Arkansas State last night. I actually like these. Oh, and Arkansas State wore some matte-black helmets or something (also note the ball carrier’s school-colored dreads). But wow… you certainly can’t accuse Oregon for looking bland and dreary.
-Alabama vs. Michigan: Go ahead and get your hockey references out of the way now. With that settled, that’s actually not a bad-looking uniform. Of course, these should be their full-time jersey tops (not with white pants, though), but what they wore last night would be nice look for the road if they wanted to make a change. Also of note: the helmet numbers are more block-like than last year’s numbers. I honestly don’t buy the whole “no helmet numbers this year” deal, so I’ll have to see what they do next week. Alabama had what looked to be a championship celebration decal on the back of their helmets (grainy photo, but it’s on the back-left). During a Heisman commercial that came on just before the game started, I saw RGIII in his Baylor uniform without the swoosh (probably because of his contract deal with Adidas, or some licensing thing with the network), and a Baylor? matte-green helmet without the decals.
A pretty fun start to the season, if you ask me. Anyway, I’m super-stoked for this season. Hope you guys are too, and I’ll see you next week =)
WOW! Fantastic job with that TJ. And we’re just getting started with this bad boy…
Colorize This!
Occasionally, I will be featuring wonderful, high-quality black and white photographs that are just begging to be colorized.
Haven’t had this segment for a couple of months, and as you might expect, there are a lot of them. So today, I’m just going to mete out a few of the older ones (but they’re still great). We feature John Turney and George Chilvers, but Gary Chanko sent me one that can stand on its own (and might even be a lede), so I’m going to hold off on that one today. But what follows, as always, is worth the wait. (Click on each photo to enlarge).
We begin with John Turney:
Pittsburgh verus Giants circa 1933-35.
Next up is George Chilvers, who actually had sent in four, but I’m only going to run two today. The first was a personal favour to our Comrade Marshall, who you will recall penned this lede on the birth of the stirrup, recognizing our patron saint, Nap Lajoie. In that article there was a black and white photo of Nap all laid up. I asked George to colourize it for Robert (and share it with us):
Phil,
Here you go.
George
And the second for today:
Not sure when you’re running again, Phil – but I’ll get a couple off to you to be on the shelf ready whenever.
This colourisation, which came originally from the Library of Ireland’s collection, gave me some sleepless nights, for reasons that anyone of a certain age with an Irish Catholic education will understand. This is the hurling team of De La Salle College in Waterford in 1910. It was a teacher training establishment, so these young gentlemen of varying skills of growing facial hair, were being trained in the Dark Arts of Advanced Torturing Young Boys. No matter how I tried to soften the effect of the eyes of the Brother in the centre I couldn’t – and those piercing eyes still haunt me even after completing the picture. Mind you, the guy in the suit second from the right at the back has a certain “evil look” too. :)
Some other things to note are the guy with the name of presumably his former school on his hurley (he also has “DLS” sown onto his sash) and the metal bands around a few of the hurleys which could I think deliver quite a blow :)
Having said all that, Ireland was still a British colony and many of these lads will have gone off to war in a few years time. I rather think that what they learnt at DLS will have kept them safe and put the enemy to flight.
George
And rounding out the segment today is a newcomer, Daniel Woolston, who colorized a photo of one of the ugliest incidents in baseball history:
Hey Phil,
I’ve been a long time reader and was hoping to submit a colorized photo I did on reddit yesterday for your Colorize This feature. I’m not sure if this is up to quality standards but I thought I’d give it a go.
The photo depicts the famous fight between Juan Marichal and Johnny Roseboro in 1965.
Thanks,
Daniel Woolston
Great stuff John, George and Daniel! Thanks for your efforts. Back with more Colorize This! next time.
2012 Duck Tracker…
The 2012 Ducks broke out with a new “old school” look, going with yellow lids, green tops and yellow pants, perhaps a nod to the 1995 team. Whatever the reason, they looked outstanding.
Our 2012 Duck Tracker is Tim E. O’Brien, and he’s put together quite a package for this year. I’ll now turn over the rest of this to him.
“To start the season, the Ducks wore what I can only imagine are the best combination this set will display. The classic Yellow over Green over Yellow is beautiful, undervalued and classic Oregon. I still wish they’d go back to their last helmet, but these are pretty snazzy duds.
Be sure to check out the rest of the Duck Tracker to see what other combinations are possible this season.
–Tim”
Thanks Tim! Super Job with that — looking forward to your Duck Tracking every Sunday Morning on UW!
SOS ”“ Save Our Students!
We take a brief break from our usual fare to hear about a very disturbing development in the sport of hockey — no, not the possible cancellation of the 2012-13 season — but something even worse. The President of the Uni Watch Hockey Wing, Teebz, has the gory details, as he hopes we can…
…SOS ”“ Save Our Students!
By Teebz
Paul has complained about the selling of civic entities to corporate buyers, but the image above represents a new low in a world where the bar is continually lowered. For those of you who complain about the 2×2 advertisements on NBA uniforms, I present to you the uniforms of the teams participating in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League. That’s right, kids ”“ all six teams will now be playing for a corporate sponsor on the front rather than the team they made.
Made by Gemini Sports, the new uniforms will come into play this season. The non-profit Elite League decided to “take advantage of a model developed by European teams to increase league sponsorship”. Says Elite League Marketing Specialist Robert Fallen, “We’ve been discussing (this) for a few years because in order for us to generate more substantial sponsorship revenue we need to develop inventory that was going to be attractive to corporate Minnesota.” Excuse me while I clean the vomit off my keyboard.
From left to right, Team Great Plains will now play for Luther Automotive; Team North will be playing for Muscle Milk; Team Southeast will proudly billboard for TCF Bank; Team Northeast will suit up for Mpls/St.Paul Magazine; Team Southwest will capture the pride of Starkey; and Team Northwest will represent Velocity Hockey Center.
Honestly, I am disgusted by this money grab. If the league needed cash or needed to cut costs, there are ways aside from selling out the league’s teams. It appears that fans of the Elite League are just as annoyed as I am as well. Iron Range Hockey wrote in the comments, “This is the final straw for me and the league has lost all credibility with me and many others.” Joe wrote, “This is marketing gone wrong in the worst way. Gross.”
This bull$#!” is a sell-out in the most egregious way, and I hope that players in the league will make a stand against this kind of billboarding in high school hockey by opting to play in a different league.
Thanks, Teebz — how do you really feel?
5 and 1
Welcome to a very special “5 & 1” — for those of you unfamiliar with the concept, it’s pretty simple really. It’s the NCAA. It’s football. The 5 best and 1 “worst” matchups (as determined by both teams playing) are counted down.
The “5 and 1” had been the exclusive provenance of Jim Vilk for three years here at Uni Watch. But like all good things, this too must come to an end. Jim is here to grace us with one last NCAA football 5&1 before handing over the reins to Catherine Ryan — he’s not entirely quitting the 5&1 game — he’ll still do some college hoops and men’s figure skating down the road, but the constant strain and an overbearing weekend editor is putting him into semi-retirement. Not to worry, I’ve found an able successor, so the 5 and 1 can continue to grace the Sunday Uni Watch pages from now until the end of time.
We’ll be treated to TWO 5&1’s today — Jim’s last, and Catherine’s first. They’re both below. Enjoy!
Jim Vilk’s 5 & 1
Here’s something for you to play while you read the list. And away we go…
I normally stick to two Honorable Mentions, but what’s Phil gonna do now…fire me?
HMs to Arkansas State/Oregon – I outlived Bellotti Bold, so my work here is done, anyway.
To Northwestern/Syracuse – Way to use your striping proudly, Wildcats!
To Eastern Kentucky/Purdue – Russell makes EKU look a lot better than they made Georgia Tech.
To Central Arkansas/Ole Miss – You think I’d leave you without including a battle of shoulder stripes?
To Oklahoma/UTEP – You think I’d leave you without including a game from the fabulous Sun Bowl?
And…to Ohio/Penn State – NOBs? (*Sobs*)
5. Villanova/Temple – I liked the TEMPLE helmet better, but in this matchup the new helmet suits me to a T.
4. Austin Peay/Western Kentucky – A lot of red, but it contrasts very nicely.
3. North Texas/LSU – One more chance to say, “Color palette special of the day.”
2. McNeese State/Middle Tennessee – Surprise!
1. Michigan/Alabama – I love how Michigan leaves the home uni alone while having fun with the roadsters.
And my final bad one: Notre Dame/Navy – THIS is the week you should wear your wacky alts!
It’s been three years and one week already? Seems like yesterday that Phil came up with this idea and let me be the experimental test pilot. Anyway, it’s time to turn the controls and the 5&1 manual over to Catherine, who I’m sure will take the list to greater heights. Thanks, and I’ll see you later.
Thanks Jim — for as much grief as I’ve given you over the years, I’m surprised you lasted this long. It’s been a great ride buddy — but I know it’s only a temporary end — I’ll catch ya at the end of the year (?) for your season review, and if not then, for sure for the NCAA Hoops Tourney 5 & 1s.
And, now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for — Catherine’s first 5 & 1:
Catherine Ryan’s 5 and 1
1. Auburn/Clemson: I’ve always been a huge fan of Auburn’s uniforms and when that Clemson purple makes a minimal appearance I’m going to notice.
2. Michigan/Alabama: It would be hard not to include this match-up from the weekend. Michigan’s away uniforms, aside from the helmet numbers, were some of the best they’ve ever worn. Not much to say about Alabama’s uniforms: simple, classic, beautiful.
3. Ole Miss/Central Arkansas: I love Ole Miss. I love the colors, I love the striping, and I even like the gray pants. I’ll overlook my hatred for purple in allowing Central Arkansas (who actually look good) to sit pretty at number 3.
4. Boston College/Miami: I put aside my hatred for Big East defectors in choosing this match-up. Boston College looked great and Miami came out in all white with white lids. Miami is a risky pick, I know, I know. Whether it’s the eyebrows or the pants stripe the uniforms draw their fair share of critics. Regardless, they looked great this weekend.
5. McNeese/Mid Tennessee: McNeese caught my eye by being the first FCS team to upset an FBS team this season. However, the uniforms for both teams were great. McNeese even has the school name on the backs of the jerseys.
& 1: Southern Utah/Utah State: Let’s just be glad this game affected only one state.
Honorable Mention: Penn State: PSU gets a shout-out for the new additions to their traditional uniforms. The helmets feature a blue ribbon to honor victims of child abuse. Additionally, the uniforms feature player names on the back, presumably to honor the players that remained at the university.
Maroney Meter: Considering this was her reaction to last week’s news, she told us where we could stick our uniform discussion.
And thank you Catherine. Great job as well — and welcome aboard! Well dear readers, how’d they do?
“Benchies” first appeared at U-W in 2008, and has been a Saturday & Sunday feature here for the past two years.
It’s lonely at the top…
Click to enlarge
And that’s going to do it for this fine Sunday of this Laborious Day weekend. Please join me in thanking Terry, Jim & Catherine, Teebz, Tim, Ricko and the colorizers on one helluva job well done.
Paul will be back tomorrow so I’ll catch you guys next weekend. Peace.
“Holy shit. I can’t believe I’m typing this, but Oregon almost looks great! The stupid-ass wings and feathers on the helmets and shoulders aside, that’s a damn fine uniform. That green and yellow is wonderful. They should make those the school colors!”
–Coleman Mullins
Daniel
Excellent work! Definitely up to standard :)
Wholeheartedly agreed! Well done, to Daniel and the rest of the colorizers as well.
Amazing installations today George. The Lajoie one especially, with its historical importance and all.
all three of you did great, and daniel looked like an old pro.
but a special thanks to george for that lajoie convalescing, i was so happy to see that done. when i found that i said to myself, boy-howdy i hope george has at this one.
The colorizations never cease to amaze me. Wish the Giants /Steelers shot was of better quality. That would make a helluva mural!
Normally I just roll my eyes at Oregon’s shenanigans (and these unis are no less shenanigan-y), but I LOVED what they wore last night. That was, in my opinion, a great adaptation of their school colors and, aside from the crazy helmet and shoulder wings, it was a relatively conservative uniform (for Oregon). Too bad we probably won’t see them again.
Great job today, Catherine! We’ll miss Vilk, but the 5 and 1 appears to be in good hands.
I agree. It doesn’t hurt that those are, you know, their actual school colors. One of these days you’d think Oregon will have to pick a uniform to be their default. I wouldn’t mind if these were the ones they choose.
I really liked this look for the Ducks as well. I just wish they’d have wings on the helmet or the jersey not both, and get rid of the Beaverton Necktieâ„¢ AKA that terrible flywire collar.
of course, i swallowed the duck kool aid years ago, but this combo was probably my favorite school color combo they’ve ever worn
and while college ain’t the pros, there is one thing i do like about colleges that the NFL should adopt — as long as you’re going to let players wear their “look at me” kicks, then they should do like the colleges and have the cleats color-coordinate with the unis AND drop the stupid low-white sock rule
seriously, if your team wants to dress up like ninjas, the let em wear black socks & shoes
not saying every team should do this or even that it’s a good look, but if the pros want to dress like colleges, let em go all the way
The low white sock rule does need to disappear. There’s absolutely no reason that a team like the Lions shouldn’t be able to wear the solid blue socks. Hell, for that matter, we ought to be able to have a team like the Seahawks use low navy socks, with the upper colored part being neon green or gray. It’d look far better than the low white/navy sock/navy pant combo.
Yo Phil, that Raven missed big by wearing those white shoes. Only Jerry Seinfeld would appreciate that.
Oregon looked quite Spritely last night. Diggin’ the old school color tones.
thanks, mike
wish you were still doin’ the tracker, but it’s definitely in good hands with timE
I gotta agree. Oregon looked really good last night. If the wings on the helmets had been green instead of chrome I think it would have been near perfect.
John’s lovely Steeler-Giant colorization is from 1933, which is the only year the Steelers wore the jerseys with the city seal (until the ’94 throwbacks).
This was December 3, 1933. The Giants played at Pittsburgh for their 1st game of the season on September 20 but it was an early season night game. In it, the Giants wore their ‘other’ jersey without the white stripes across the chest.

Where did you find that gem of a photo, John T??? Woof! Awesome photo!!!
After seeing this pic, I’m also beginning to think that referees (the head official) wore a cap other than white during the 1920-1940 NFL era. With all other officials wearing white “newsboy” caps, IF they chose to wear a cap. It was optional for an official to wear a cap until 1947.
I would have to look to see where I got that, but it was scanned from a book I have in my library.
Thanks also to BurghFan for the date of the game, I didn’t know for sure when it was.
So not a single word about Mizzou’s brand new uniforms?
Obviously they’re just too awesome for words, so nothing could be said.
I went and looked in the Columbia Tribune at the pictures, and I was unimpressed. The number font comes off as amateurish, different to be different, and for me, tiresome.
I thought about mentioning them, but then I was all like, “nah, not mentioning them will really piss off Kahn.”
Then me and bigfoot high fived and went back to watching the faked moon landing’s bloopers.
I almost gave them an honorable mention, but there were enough of those already…
Yes, kudos to Mizzou for getting rid of the diamond-sided jerseys.
I saw the Mizzou game. The new unis aren’t horrible in all black but they weren’t great. The numbers are in a dark gold but could use a white outline to make them stand out a little better. When the rain started, the numbers got even darker and harder to read against the black. I was never a fan of the diamond sided unis and really wish they would have gone back to the Corby Jones/Larry Smith era uniforms.
I would love it if the student hockey players protested by turning their jerseys inside out!
-Jet
My God, those hockey uniforms are ugly! I don’t know why they bothered to put numbers on the jersey front. There’s probably another 24-36 square inches of fabric that could be covered with another lame-ass advertisement. Teebz-Are there any photos of the back of the uniforms? I shudder to think about it if they’re as bad as the fronts. At least they included the TV numbers as required by NFHS rules.
Haven’t found any yet, Terry, but I’m sure they will be horrendous as well.
I wrote about this yesterday on HBIC, but what happens if the Muscle Milk team begins receiving free protein supplements as another way of marketing? Is that considered an unfair advantage?
they would, if muscle milk actually, ya know, worked
There’s the push, Phil. If it doesn’t work, what’s being forced upon our kids through some abhorrent marketing? If it does work, what unfair advantage is Muscle Milk creating by giving it only to their team after every game?
Coach Bill O’Brien put the names on the back of the uniforms because he thought it would be a reward to the players who stayed. At this time, the decision is only for this season.
During the telecast, they showed Karen Caldwell, wife of equipment manager Brad “Spider” Caldwell sewing the nameplates on the uniforms. The NOBs are really weird, but after what we learned last November, it is really hard to get upset about anything like NOBs.
It is definitely a jolt to see NOB’s on PSU’s jerseys, even if nothing else has really changed on the jersey (excluding the B1G patch).
It sorta reminds me of the 16 NFL teams that added NOB’s in 1970 effective with the merger. Though I was just 12, it was a punch to the eyes to see Dallas (who moved their TV #s from the shoulders to the sleeves to make room), Chicago, the Rams (HUGE LETTERS!), Steelers, Packers, Colts and the like with NOB’s after being so used to seeing them without NOB’s.
Michigan looked like something out of the 90s.
No they didn’t… I don’t see any teal or black…
Hiyooo !
Their sideline apparel was Zubaz… link
I’m really disappointed with the Zubaz revival. I loved those pants originally, but the color pattern I had/want doesn’t seem to exist among the new ones.
Lifelong McNeese fan here. The school name on the back is both loved and hated. Personally I love it,but it could be updated to their latest font.
I prefer no name at all on the back, but school name on back is cool.
Is Marcus Mariota the greatest QB ever to wear the number “B”?
link
I’ve always used eight to spell BOOBIES upside down on a calculator.
The Dolly Parton calculator trick was a classic.
The first album of her hit songs was called…
“The Best of Dolly Parton”
Good move. Think about it. How would either of the other two common choices have worked? Or not.
“Dolly’s…”
Um, nope.
Good ole number B
That reminds me of a Kentucky QB wearing number 1A when Bear Bryant was there.
Good ole number B
All I can think of is this: link
/Today’s letter is… 3.
Not mentioned was the ironic fact that PSU adds the names on the jerseys and Pitt takes them off: link
Pittsburgh looked like crap without them. Then again they looked like crap during the game as well.
Something funny about Michigan State’s uniforms, that took me a couple years to understand even as a student: the solid green uniforms are the regular home uniforms. The green uniforms with white sleeves–which are the exact mirror of our road uniforms–are alternates.
I was under the impression that the white-shouldered greens were the main homes, the green-shouldered whites were the roads (I know I’m right about that), and the all-greens were the alts. Did they make a change, or has it always been this way, or what?
General comments today: I really don’t care about college football (especially since the Big 10 Network formed & took games off antenna TV) but those hockey jerseys are beyond awful. I would rather they wore blank jerseys with just numbers (even made out of duct tape). This is exactly why corporate sponsorship doesn’t belong on any sports uniform. I don’t care if it’s the norm in soccer or in Europe, it looks like total shit. It looks like a walking billboard soulless corporate tool. What’s sad is there’s probably some stupid kids out there who thinks it looks “dope”.
Totally agree, Concealed. And we’re talking about marketing directly to the most impressionable people in the market: teenagers.
If we’re trying to curb their intake of Red Bull, should we really be pushing Muscle Milk, a protein supplement?
Only two words to describe Vandy’s uni: “high school.” Absolutely awful. Well, I guess that’s two more words. Or you could make the first two words a compound modifier that just counts as one word. Point is that they’re really, really ugly.
I disagree. Vanderbilt is one of the few schools that I don’t get upset with when they wear black. Commodores just seem to belong in black. And that all black helmet? I like it a lot. The understated star outline and the V just works for me.
If it ever snows in Nashville, that Vandy uni will be awesome. For the rest of the year, it’s…OK.
Vandy unis look like crap. High School. Jackass Junior College. Nothing Special NO CLASS.
“But it looks tough” ….
Gold is a great team color. Totally discarded by the idiot decision-makers at Vandy …. Vandy has great team colors. Too bad they are ignored for this twenty-years too late, thug wannabee, sad assed trendy, shithead look. They look like a 9 yr old bantam team that plays underneath an interstate ramp.
Ridiculous uniform for a class university and an SEC team. Amongst too many ridiculous unis in big-time football ….
Picture of Rice is against WEstern Michigan, not UCLA. And CMU has maybe most underrated unis, if they stick to helmet shown in your pic (and they haven’t. btw) almost a pro helmet (well, maybe CFL-pro)…
“Picture of Rice is against WEstern Michigan, not UCLA.”
Intentional. I picked that one because that was back when they wore Nike uniforms that didn’t stretch in 1,000 awkward directions (I could’ve picked a more recent picture, but it was hard to find one that wasn’t mono-blue, since they went blue-over-white against UCLA). They switched to Adidas and their TechFit uniform this year, so I was comparing their old Nike unis with their new Adidas unis.
I was going to include a disclaimer saying that the Rice/WMU pick was old, but figured that they would see what I was talking about with where I linked.
Obviously, State looks bad in its all red, too. And coming up with a new striped helmet and wearing it with a solid pant of the same color is pretty much unforgivable.
if they were playing unc, or virginia in a standard dark on white game ACC game, then yes, the all red state is a bad look, but by going all red against tennessee in a colour on colour, it provided the necessary contrast. otherwise we have two white helmets, two white pants, and contrasting jerseys, but not so much if the other elements match. so if tennessee goes standard, and they don’t wear alts, state did the right thing by making the game look better even if their uni looked worse.
auburn-clemson, which already looked great, would have been better if clemson was in their glorious all orange too.
agreed, but this is how the game should have looked yesterday
i liked the colour v colour since i nary get to see it, but yes, that would be a great match-up like that too.
Man Sunday @ uni watch is always on point. Thanks to all the colorizers: George, John & Daniel. John, that NYG pic is a dynamite action shot that came out great. Benchies gave me a chuckle as usual. Watched part of the Rangers/Indians game and I really like the
link
Thanks much.
Northwestern looks fine in photos but when they were in wideshot, even on an HD television, it was a lot harder to figure out the player numbers because of the purple stripes cutting through the black numbers. When I clicked over to the standard definition channel the same feat was nearly impossible.
Good point. I didn’t see the game on TV, so I only had pictures as a reference.
So they suffer from Washington Wizards Syndrome…nice uni, but not as practical as it should be. Glad I only gave them Honorable Mention…
I stand by my statement yesterday that these were impossible to see the numbers on TV. I even tried another TV and still the same. The home ones should be much better though.
I also noticed that. The numbers on the NW were unreadable on wide shots. For me the idea of the NW uniforms is a good one, but for me the black and purple color combination just doesn’t work.
A few to many for me’s there
Still hating on the trend of mustard matte pants. Having shiny gold pants match the helmet just seems to make the most sense. #dumbtrends #grayfacemasks
Agreed. Any team wearing a metallic helmet *should* have matching metallic pants. This goes for teams in silver helmets as well as gold ones. On it’s own, the matte pants with the metallic helmet doesn’t look *too* bad – and back in the 60s or 70s it was a perfectly acceptable thing to do. But now that teams *can* match the metallic color, it looks freakin horrible when they don’t.
of course, the best solution is to stop having shiny helmets
I… can’t actually disagree with that. The non-metallic helmet on this guy link looks decent enough. I’m sure that a matte gold (aka tan/light brown) helmet would work too.
Shiny pants are stupid. I think this chrome & glitter crap they keep putting on helmets is dumb too.
Well, sure, because everyone should do the same thing.
you guys are nuts.
~first off metallic pants stink, and don’t need to match like link to look good, it is a step down. matching does not always equal better.
~and not every helmet has to maximize their shine factor like so. miss. with all that glitter. not everybody has to factor ten their golden domes like ND, or chrome them like O. but to say everybody would look better in matte pan is rubbish. especially since about 3/4’s of the matte helmets rot anyway.
flat, sans gloss like the picture jeff showed of the doll, fine. but this matte that people are using looks like the primer you put on your car before you paint it right proper, it just looks bad most of the time. ohio and minnesota both looked alright, but many of those, like catherine’s and 1 looked like garbage.
Damn it Mark! Stop making me agree with you! The glitter on helmets is annoying.
Look, it comes down to “designers” needing to do “something different” and call it good in order to justify their existence (in their minds, anyway).
So they either make helmets more glitzy (glitter) or less glitzy (matte or flat).
One of the true signs of a designer who shouldn’t trusted is that he/she thinks no one else has ever done anything right, that their “genius” can improve anything and everything.
Same for editors. Sometimes a valid decision is to not change a thing and say, as Ben Bradlee did in ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN…
“Run that baby.”
“flat, sans gloss”
~~~
that’s fine — they don’t have to be matte, but they shouldn’t look like motorcycle helmets or bowling balls
you want to make an exception for notre dome, im hip to that, since they’re trying to recreate their signature element
but this shiny shit with sparkles and bells and whistles has got to go…
so…flat (and sometimes matte) = good
I don’t mind the shiny helmet for ND. It looks nice and works well for what they are trying to get it to do. But where they fail and Navy nails it better is their blue facemask. The blue looks so much better.
Michigan State wasn’t wearing their alternate home jerseys, they were wearing their regular ones. Their alternatives are the ones they wore for the Hail Mary Wisconsin game last year and the Little Giants Notre Dame game in 2010, it has white shoulders.
I replied to a similar comment a few threads up.
and speaking of the 5 &1, i see there is a new mouse in the house. glad to see my man the mothervilker’s reign of terror is over.
the inclusion of the green-orange on white miami against a sans white maroon and gold BC was a relief, and encouraging that some high contrast match-ups might get a little love, even if some uni elements are not perfect. miami’s has a B uni, the pants of which i happen to love for the abstract state of florida, but even if you don’t like the miami uni’s, it still made for a striking game.
In many cities and towns across the land, there is music and dancing in the streets.
link
Miami still has a C uni at best, though.
I *think* I’m ok with the new 5+1 person… The number 1 spot was a color vs color game. ^_^
We’ll see what the future holds.
As long as Catherine does not continue JimVs trend of putting Penn State in the top 5 every single week. haha
I will give her a pass on the honorable mention since the names was a new thing.
Man oh man. Sure is a lot to digest here today. Terry doing all that work in the first part.
Nice to have Catherine too. The colorizations are back. Hurray.
College football is my favorite. So Sunday Uni Watch is my favorite.
Did anybody mention the college game on ESPN now? Bethune Cookman unis. Check them out.
Well those are something… The stripes are good, but I’m not really liking the gradient helmet. I think I’m more distracted by the fact that there’s a Mickey Mouse painted on the field.
haha about the Mickey.
Yes the unis are something. I guess they are kind of ok. At first I was like huh. But the colors and stripes are good.
That’s actually a pretty sick uniform, but the screenprint numbers blow. Switch to tackle-twill, and it’s an A+ uni in my book.
After the first look I admit it grew on me quickly.
Not very interesting, but to answer the question, Navy normally have an NCAA helmet sticker, but no patch.
Navy also had a new sticker on the back of the helmet (to add to the many already there). Not sure what tho.
Also of note… PSU added an American Flag decal to their helmets….
they didn’t have one already?
clearly they must have hated america and loved pedophiles before…but all is forgiven now
George, I think the De La Salle colourisation is your finest work yet. (In spite of its ominous overtones.) Exquisite!
Thank you :)
Stanford was missing their stripe on their pants vs San Jose St.
link
Maybe I’m in the minority, but I’m not a fan of the Michigan jerseys. Too much maize, and it minimizes the greatness of the helmet.
“minimizes the greatness of the helmet.”
Yup, but in that sense better than last year’s stripeys. Those really fought for attention with the classic signature lids.
Agreed. I liked Michigan’s uniforms in the promo pictures, but on the field it was a little bit of maize overload. I would have liked to see a reverse of the maize and blue on the shoulders.
Delhi Defenders. Would this crack a Top 10 Uniwatch Uniform List?
link The royal blue black and gold are really handsome together.
Not sure of another team that features this combo but I bet they will now!
O.K., so the things that I found out today:
1) The solid greens for Michigan State are actually their primary homes, not their alts (I could’ve sworn the white-shouldered homes were their primaries).
2) Mizzou had a game yesterday, and I didn’t see it.
3) Stanford didn’t have any pants stripes against SJSU.
4) Pitt striped off the NOBs on their jerseys as well as Hawai’i.
link the missing picture of Arkansas State’s matte helmets and the ball carrier’s school-colored dreads.
Anything else?
Also, fantastic job, everyone! Catherine, welcome aboard. Amazing job by the colorizers, and this looks to be a great season! =D
“(I could’ve sworn the white-shouldered
homesgreens were their primaries).”Fixed
It did seem like many teams wore their “normal” unis Saturday. The teams with multiple combos. Arizona State did,Washington did and as noted Oklahoma State did. Washington State also. That was nice to see for the most part.
MY TAKE ON NEW UNIFORMS
MISSISSIPPI STATE – Great new, unique look for a team that could use a great uni with a unique look. Ruined by the insane wordmark on the chest. Looks like a plaque near a mailbox on a mansion estate. Loose the wordmark, the template (so unique) is a Grade – A++. Until they recognize that less is more, and lose the estate plaque, it’s a Grade – B.
UNLV – Good colors, but the jersey is wayyyyytooooo busy with wordmarks. Put the small collar wordmark – school r conference – and it is wayyy better. Helmet and panys stripes great, good part of the 1970’s look. Helmet decal too big, and too unimaginative. UNLV truly could use a better wordmark or logo. Desperately. Improvement over last year (a D-) – yes. Full potential – No. Grade – C+.
Vandy (tricky given their dozens f potential combos) – This week – Sad. Horrible. Vandy unis look like crap. High School. Jackass Junior College. Nothing Special NO CLASS. Some BFBS troglodytes will say “But it looks tough” …. I say, go do donuts in your four-wheeler on somebody else’s lawn, preferably your own. Gold is a great team color. Totally discarded by the idiot decision-makers at Vandy …. Vandy has great team colors. Too bad they are ignored for this twenty-years too late, thug wannabee, sad assed trendy, shithead look. Grade – F.
OREGON – I love the old school colors, but the helmet is a crazy mess best left for perhaps mantle piece awards and not gamewear. I believe that the 2012 Rose Bowl template writ large is a huge step backward. That my taste. I like to wtch football, not the “Tron” movie battle scene. Let’s hope the other combos- presumably asme template – works better. Grade – D.
Northwestern – Loved it. Let’s hope it works as well on the dark jerseys. I suspect the dark on dark won’t, but here’s to hoping. Grade – A.
UCLA – the truncated stripes atr truly assinine. I don’t care how stretchy the jerseys are, they suck. Grade -D-.
While I did like the Ducks unis I too think the helmet was too busy. Having the O on the back. It took me a while to even notice the O on the back.
I had been saying they could do some things with the unis using school colors or close them.
SMU had this different stripe pattern last year. Sort of like the old Ohio State gray sleeve pattern.
How about Rutgers new look at Tulane Sat night?
link
i don’t know whether the vilker saw that, but even with his deep love for tulane, i don’t think he could have even found room in his honourable mention section for that hot mess
Well at least one school looked good in that game.
Such a drastic change for Rutgers and not even a single mention.
I didn’t know that they were playing. I catch as many games as I can, but some do fly under my radar, like Mizzou and Rutgers. My bad =/
SMU wearing Northwestern stripes, positioned on the shoulders like UCLA stripes. Never seen that before.
Even though they’re WAY too short I’m liking the SMU look. Of course they get just as many points removed for going all white soI guess it’s a wash. Baylor looks awful as always but that gray facemask continues to make my head want to explode. Get some green paint and fix that and it would be a nice looking helmet.
*the SMU northwestern stripes on the shoulder look….
Trying to watch the game and type wasn’t working very well.
“Baylor looks awful as always but that gray facemask continues to
make my head want to explodebe the only part of that uniform that’s decent.”~~~
(fixed)
That whole look needs to be blown up and started over. And why are they still wearing that shade of gold when the basketball wears more of the “yellow”?
been like that for a while, and i fail to understand why — baylor has beautiful “official” colours of green and athletic gold and they wear that shit metallic gold for football
and of course, today they decided to join the bfbs crowd (in 100 degree heat no less — hello???)
i’d like to blame swooshie, since that’s their supplier for football, but god help us if the trefoil takes over — or the football team could end up looking like this nightmare
Ah those basketball nightmares! I didn’t need that reminder. I’d take the risk of seeing that as a one-off if it meant the rest of the year they actually wore the school colors. I like metallic gold but it’s like the gray facemasks, the BFBS, and now the GFGS it’s it’s not a school color it shouldn’t be worn.
Even as a modernist the Green Bay Packers looks fantastic. Baylor in those “things” looks like something my dog threw up and then rolled around in.
SMU vs Baylor on now
SMU had sort of sleeve stripes before. They now put them where UCLA did. YUK
Baylor wearing black. YUK
At least SMU stopped wearing black socks.
In addition to the smaller uni numbers on Iowa’s jerseys the NOB font is different and smaller. IMO it looked homemade.
“…What do you get when you teach two Oregon Ducks the Metamoran Fusion technique..”
Be advised—-
That “metoran” link has a bug. It kept opening up the page without me clicking on it.
That font kind of looks like ITC Machine. That’s my best guess.
