Just about any time Stan Musial appears in public these days, he wears a red blazer. So it’s almost shocking to see him wearing blue, even if he’s supporting the home team. Very cool photo (“And no Ree-box or Bettman stripes!” notes Ryan Raymond).
New ESPN piece today, in which I’m inviting readers to rename and redesign the Hornets. Get crackin’, lads.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of Stan the Man, check out how he and some of his teammates made creative use of their jerseys for a photo shoot. ”¦ More info on those new EMU football uniforms. ”¦ Buried in this 1933 Ticker-style item is the following: “Members of the Cleveland Bulldogs professional football team are galloping ghosts. They wear uniforms with skeletons painted on the front, and as their games are played at night, the effect is spookish.” Wish we could see a photo of that! (Great find by Jerry Wolper.) … Also from Jerry: Look at this amazing shot of the officiating crew from a 1934 charity football game. Hot diggity! … Yesterday I mentioned that Motorola will no longer be the NFL’s official headset provider. That prompted Nathan Hawkins to point out something I hadn’t been aware of, namely that NFL headsets are actually Telex equipment with Motorola labels. Of course, the lottery is already a disgrace, so it’s not like the ads would be debasing a noble civic institution, but they’d make a scummy enterprise even scummier (thanks, Phil). ”¦ Soccer news from Austin Chen, who writes: “Cool moment at the end of the Champions League semifinal match between Chelsea and Barcelona, as Lionel Messi and Captain John Terry exchanged jerseys, a tradition that (to my knowledge) tends to happen more in international matches and more rarely in club matches.” ”¦ Speaking of soccer, Jon Forbes says he was browsing the web and came upon new kits for Norwich City, Australia (home and road), and Chelsea. ”¦ Speaking of the new Norwich City kit, some kid leaked photos of the design 12 hours before the official launch, so the team sent the cops after him. “Disgusting behavior by Norwich City in my opinion,” says George Chilvers. ”¦ “I find the LA Kings’ numbering driving me crazy,” writes Daniel McLaughlin. “It’s so wide and thick, it feels out of proportion with the ‘LA’ on the front of the jersey.” ”¦ Polo will be making the outfits worn by U.S. Olympians for the closing ceremonies. “That is one big horse,” says Josh Jacobs.
It’s odd to see Musial in a jersey that’s not number 6.
At least he has good taste. I’d wear an Al MacInnis Blues jersey… and I’m not even a Blues fan!
When was that photo taken? Looks like he is wearing a Koho jersey according to the logo on the arm.
I sure miss the Koho and CCM look in the NHL!
Odder than this?…

When that photo was taken, Rose wasn’t identified with any number yet. The Musial photo is more like giving Rose #27 at a recent Bengal game (although I’m afraid I wouldn’t put that past the Bengals).
The exchanging of jerseys happens in almost every club match… EPL, MLS, La Liga, and especially Champions League
I’m no expert on it, but I was going to say that it’s also possibly more likely to happen between two clubs from different leagues that just don’t play each other very often.
It can lead to dissent:
link
I don’t know if it happens as frequently after intraleague games (i.e. when Chelsea play Man Utd), but it’s a very common occurrence in the Champions League, where teams very rarely meet.
I’m more curious about what happens to those, because I doubt Messi has much use for Terry’s Chelsea shirt, let alone dozens from other (probably lesser-known) players too. Clean them, sell, then donate the proceeds to charity? Keep them in a massive collection?
It’s a common occurance at MLS games. Though, interestingly enough, it’s usually (like 88% at least) the captains who exchange shirts. John Terry is Chelsea’s captain, but Puyol captains Barca (Messi isn’t even one of their 3 named vice-captains, either).
Maybe it has something to do with the racism charge against Terry, but that’s wild speculation on my part
I think mostly they go into the players’ personal collections. I’ve seen pictures from inside houses where they’ve got all the jerseys they’ve traded for on display.
And then again, apparently Stu Holden just keeps all his packed away in boxes.
There was some furor this season when Bayern Leverkusen players were forbidden form changing shirts after the game, since it was causing conflict about players about who would get to change with Messi.

As I posted above at 9:17am (your time) :)
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Maryland men’s basketball is already getting a new uniform wardrobe. Under Armour just outfitted the rest of the teams with their Maryland Pride design. Including women’s lacrosse and softball. Although, it’s fitting to outfit both lacrosse teams in Maryland Pride gear here because lacrosse is so popular.

Ugh… Frankenjersey bad! Frankenjersey very bad!
It’d be much more clever if it were Rockies-Rockies, instead of Rockies-Avalanche. Though, who are you gonna pick from among the NHL Rockies? Wilf Paiement? Lanny MacDonald? (Both wore 9 – they were traded for each other.) Joel Quenneville, maybe? (He wore 22.)
Definitely link.
Ah, Lanny McDonald and Joel Quenneville. Two cornerstones of the Leafs who were traded to Colorado by Punch Imlach on December 29, 1979. I heard the news on the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge as I was en route to Toronto for the weekend. I attended the game that night at MLG against the Winnipeg Jets. The Leafs won 6-1. But the game was not without controversy as that’s the night that Darryl Sittler tore his captain’s “C” off his sweater in the dressing room in an emotional response to another round of Imlach and Pal Hal Ballard’s inept dismantling of a team that was on the verge of becoming a contender again. This trade started the Blue & White down a path of ineptitude that would take a dozen years to recover from.
Weren’t they pretty much already down that path the moment Ballard resumed control of the team from his son after getting out of jail for defrauding said team?
Did Clarence Campbell even formally suspend/ban Ballard for that? Talk about your “Good Ol’ Boys Network”…
And that was also the year Ballard tore down Foster Hewett’s broadcast gondola and trashed it, instead of doing the sensible thing (namely, donating part or all of it to the Hockey Hall of Fame; could you imagine if they had that available when they were building the current HOF museum at Yonge and Front?).
Billy Ballard was more interested in promoting rock concerts than hockey. During the time that he was de facto head of MLG some pretty capable hockey people ran the team and had it going in the right direction.
Then came “The Punch and Ballard Show,” part deux.
Pal Hal actually went to the Canadian version of “Club Fed” for his three years in jail. In his final year he was let out on work release and allowed to go to his MLG office. All he had to do was be back in the joint by nightfall.
The team made the Conference Finals in 1978 where they lost to the Habs. When Punch was rehired in 1979 he said the Leafs on had “five or six good players” and he began to wreck havoc on the team. In a little more than a year-and-a-half he traded away McDonald, Quenneville, Jim McKenny, goaltender Mike Palmateer and “Tiger” Williams, all fan favorites and damn good hockey players.
Punch’s trade of Lanny was a direct slap at Sittler, McDonald’s best friend on the team. That led to Darryl’s quitting as captain of the Leafs.
Imlach had always had trouble with his stars in Toronto. During his first go around he traded Frank Mahovlich to Detroit. Carl Brewer was so messed up he left the Leafs after 1965 and got his amateur status back. Mike Walton so disillusioned that he walked out on the team.
The Punch and Ballard show ruined the team-twice.
I clicked on that link expecting to see a jersey that was half Habs, half Expos. You know you’re a Canadian when…
Half-Habs, half-Expos would probably work… for the mascot.
I remember all that well Terry. I’ve been looking for a photo of Sittler with the hole in his jersey but I can’t find one anywhere. The best I can do is a photo of fans protesting outside MLG.
link
I’d forgotten that Joel Quenneville was in on that trade, but I do remember that the Leafs got Pat Hickey and Wilf Paiement back. The only thing memorable about either of them was that Paiement also wore #99.
I do like the current version of the LA Kings jersey. It took a little while to grow on me, but I think it works pretty well. If I decide to buy another NHL jersey for someone besides my team, I would go with a white #32.
Yeah, I find it funny that it came up in today’s ticker, because as the series has gone on I’ve realized I really like it. Initially I wasn’t a big fan of the “LAK” shield, so I pretty much wrote off the entire uniform, and living in Chicago I’ve only caught a handful of Kings games before the playoffs. But over the past week I’ve really come to dig the home uni’s, and I think what I like about them is partially due to what the commenter doesn’t like: the balance between black and white. It seems that usually black jerseys are pretty much all black, or if there’s any accenting hue it’s predominantly gray/silver. I really like that there’s a pretty decent amount of white in the uniform with minimal silver. If you’re going to go with a black-and-white color scheme, you might as well be bold about it, no?
The LA Kings are my all-time most disliked hockey team thanks to Kerry Fraser’s “no call” against “The Great One” in the ’93 Western Finals. If Fraser makes the call against Gretzky for drawing blood on Dougie Gilmour the Leafs would have been on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals against their longest and most-hated rivals, Le Bleu et Blanc et Rouge.
But Gary Butthead and US television DID NOT WANT an all-Canadian final. They were trying to sell the game in SoCal and Florida. Never mind that this was the best chance for a Leaf-Habs showdown, one that is impossible now given the current conference alignment. No, they wanted to show off Gretzky and the rest of his La-La land teammates to the USA. Kerry Fraser helped to assure this fact.
Proctor, you’re like all the other Leaf fans: full of conspiracies against your beloved downtrodden, and wide-eyed, fantasy-based dreams that simply have no backing… like there every being another Stanley Cup parade in Toronto. ;o)
FYI – Bettman officially became the Commish on February 1, 1993 – a mere two months before the 1993 playoffs started. If he really had that much power to swing the favor for SoCal and to influence Kerry Fraser before Fraser had even met the guy, he must have been working through telepathy. But he’s not that talented nor does he have those abilities.
The anti-Bettman sentiment is old. I don’t necessarily like the guy, but despite all the hatred towards him, hockey has never been bigger in the US, it has seen growth in Canada despite its popularity, and the league actually has television partners that are committing to hockey. NBC and NBC Sports are eating up the ratings, and loving every minute of it.
And he link and in his new book.
Like Doug Gilmour suggested, Please let it go. It’s over. The man’s retiring. For the sake of his sanity, let it go.”
Teebz-In 1992-93 the Leafs and Habs played twice in the regular season with Toronto winning 5-4 at the Forum and 4-0 at The Gardens. So a Toront-Monteal Finals would have been a close, cultural war. We Leaf fans then would have had every reason to believe in a possible Stanley Cup parade from Union Staion on Front Street up Yonge Street to Dundas Street and then down University to Queen Street and City Hall.
And BTW-Did you ever go to a game at MLG? I had such reverence for the place that I always wore a suit and tie. Major Smythe wanted the “patrons” to show respect for the place and I tried to oblige. I guess you have to be a real Leaf fan to understand the passion we still have. Cub rooters know all about it.
Terry, I was a Leafs fan a the time and even I’m going to disagree with you. I don’t think Kerry Fraser was capable of carrying out a conspiracy.
As they say, never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.
I remember back then thinking how epic it would’ve been to have Leafs-Habs in the Finals… but, much like Gilmour acknowledged, they still had a game 7, and they just didn’t get it done… just like the Red Sox had their shot in Game 7 of the 1986 World Series after the Buckner incident in Game 6, and Boston couldn’t get it done then.
In any case, I’d have pulled for the Habs in that series, since I was still pissed over the Leafs beating the Wings in the Norris DSF. Nikolai freaking Borschevsky…
… though I was more pissed at the incompetency of then-coach/GM
Elmer FuddBryan Murray….And the Cubs also had a Game 7 after Bartman, and blew an early lead in that game, too.
I just came across this tweet from Hall of Fame hockey writer Dave Molinari (@MolinariPG):
“To fans of all NHL teams: Yes, it’s true. The league is out to screw your club. And, even worse, it is in the tank for your most hated rival”
I also agree with Daniel on the Kings’ style. I was never a fan of the 1998 rebrand. The numbers have always looked pretty clunky to me, and the NOB font just plain doesn’t match anything else; I’d much rather see a return to the classic 1980s-style block numbers and NOB.
In the spring of 1998, before the Kings announced their redesign, I’d come up with a way to work purple into the existing Gretzky-era look. Yeah, I know Paul would prefer no purple at all, but at least my design was rather subdued; basically just adding a thin amount of purple trim to the existing unis.
Maybe if I have time to recreate it, I’ll post it later.
link, using the link images as a template. My original concept drawings were done in ink and marker, but this is pretty much what I had made.
Note that I also threw in a third, based on the 1980-88 design, which I had also done at the time to give the team a full purple jersey. I enlarged the crown from the Kings’ logo at the time and added some color to it as well.
Of course, I was pretty fine with the link as-is… then we got link. I just didn’t like them as much, because of the crazy fonts, although I liked the crown logo, and was glad when they switched that to the primary logo in 2002. Still, it didn’t help that fugly collar on the purple jersey…
The link came off to me as a bit of a downgrade, by taking the waist stripes off and leaving the “LOS ANGELES” text, which just looked odd to begin with. The link (current third/former home notwithstanding), to me, are a bit of an improvement, though I still don’t like the styling of the logo and fonts (I do give them credit for using the pennant style inspired by their link, though). It’d also be nice if the home and road stripes were consistently sized.
What was it that Paul likes to say? The “hobgoblins of little minds”, or something like that?
Well, upon contemplating the above posted recreation of my concept, I realized that I’d made a mistake. I remembered that I’d fixed the inconsistency with the number colors on the black background, and had actually used white as the primary color number (much as it is on today’s black Kings unis). This allowed for a very consistent color pattern on both unis – black-silver-purple-white (logo notwithstanding).
So, link I think it looks a little better, creating better legibility for the numbers on the black background.
The 1998 re-brand looked very amateurish, with zillions of jagged objects and “rad-looking” numerals with punked corners. The whole package looked like it was doodled in the margins of a notebook by a precocious ninth-grader. All the cleanness of the Gretzky uniforms had been swept aside.
Interesting to see what Norwich City are up to. Having studied here for the last 4 years, the club has maintained great relations with the fans. Pretty poor move to do something like this.
The kit is nothing special really, so I’ll stick to the one I picked up at the start of the season.
I do love that they have Stephen Fry unveiling it, though:
link
He’s a big fan of Norwich City and often attends their games
I like the idea of the rename the Hornets contest, we always see some interesting things and concepts that get us thinking. But as a Jazz fan, is this whole “New Orleans should get the name back!” ever going to end?
I mean, it’s not like the New Orleans Jazz were a distinguished American institution. Six seasons, in front of half-empty college arenas and the cavernous Superdome, not going to the playoffs or even touching .500 one time. Trading Gail Goodrich for the #1 pick that became Magic Johnson. Giving Elgin Baylor a head coaching job. Month-long road trips because of Mardi Gras.
There’s a reason they moved, and yeah, the name doesn’t make perfect sense for SLC, but let’s be honest, this isn’t the Dodgers or Giants being stripped away from Brooklyn or New York here. As crazy as it would have sounded over 30 years ago, the Jazz nickname rightfully belongs to Utah now.
Just because you’ve had it for 30 years doesn’t mean it’s not a dumb nickname anymore for your city. It’s all about the marketing though. You lose the Jazz name and you lose your identity. It’s the same with the Lakers. They return the Lakers name to Minnesota and they aren’t quite the same team anymore.
But I do have a suggestion. Why don’t you take the Hornets name? Utah is the Beehive state after all. Mormons stay busy right? Hornets stay busy too. Everyone’s happy. And the Jazz goes back to New Orleans.
ah, Mormon jokes. Originality is the best. I don’t live in Utah, by the way.
In all seriousness, I’m not sure how taking away a nickname that’s been there for 30 years equates to “Everyone’s happy”.
Doesn’t matter though, as the guy below said, what’s done is done. The Jazz name isn’t leaving Utah.
If New Orleans’ NFL franchise moved to SLC instead, that team name would have worked…
When the Jazz “restored” their original brand identity by bringing the note logo and familiar color scheme back, merchandise sales rose 357% in one year.
I think it’s safe to say that the Utah Jazz are an established brand, and will not be changing again anytime soon.
David Stern knows this as well, which is why he stated in no uncertain terms that the Jazz nickname belongs to Utah.
When the Jazz “restored” their original brand identity by bringing the note logo and familiar color scheme back, merchandise sales rose 357% in one year.
And if they changed their team name, merch sales would rise even more. Because fans will always buy the new thing, no matter what it is. Everyone hated the Buffaslug, but it was the top-selling NHL jersey in the year of its debut.
The lesson: First-year sales of a new design have approximately zero relevance to this type of discussion.
“And if they changed their team name, merch sales would rise even more. ”
And hey, guess what’s even better! Anything that’s still on the shelves that says “Utah Jazz” on it isn’t outdated. It’s a Hardwood Classicâ„¢!
I think the ‘Slug was massively helped by the return to blue and gold. If the team had kept the red and black scheme, or (heaven forbid) come up with something completely different for that team, I don’t think it would have gone over as well. But, since Buffalo fans were clamoring for a return to blue and gold, they took what they could get… even if it did look like Trump’s hairpiece.
“Everyone’s happy.” …except for the fans of the teams whose name is getting switched & spent all that time & money on gear. Seems like the Jazz & Hornets get kicked around like a smelly bum because they’re not in L.A. or New York.
Sports mascot names are not an exact science, and there no grave injustice of the Utah Jazz, New Orleans Hornets, L.A. Lakers, etc.
I don’t think fans would appreciate somebody saying “Okay, your team name doesn’t make any sense – we’re changing it and you’re getting a new one”. I know I wouldn’t.
“except for the fans of the teams whose name is getting switched & spent all that time & money on gear.”
~~~
wait…why should anyone care about the new fans…isn’t it only the fans in the old city who matter?
I’m dead against the Hornets changing the name (the name, colours & logo are what attrscted me to the team initially), but resigned to it happening. It sucks, but that’s sports for you, and it probably won’t make me support the team any less.
My biggest fear is the Hornets identity going back to Charlotte – that would create some internal conflict…
Of course, Pete Maravich was the big drawing card for those New Orleans Jazz teams. And the fact the Jazz didn’t achieve much as a franchise was even a bigger reason why the franchise should have been renamed upon moving west. The Utah Grizzlies would have been more fitting. But what’s done is done, and too much time has gone by now.
It should be a four-way switch. Grizzlies goes to Utah, Jazz comes back to New Orleans, Hornets comes back to Charlotte, and we start anew with the Memphis Blues.
WHich would make the Memphis Blues/New Orleans Jazz matchup among the best and most natural rivalries ever from a team name standpoint.
Right up there with Sharks and Jets…in a West Side sort of way.
Sharks and Jets? I’m on it
link
As a tribute to Maravich, the Hornets should be rebranded as the Pistols. NO Pistols! Any suggestions for the logo and colors?
I must be the only person alive who likes it when things don’t make sense. When there’s a story to tell about a name; when a kid asks and you can say yeah, they used to be the New Orleans Jazz….and follow it with the Lakers story. Is that the worst thing in the world? Vestiges and anomalies add a great deal to the charm of life. Sports history is a messy ball of fun.
And I’m loving the New Orleans Hornets while I can.
Isn’t it a shame that there’s no kids in Baltimore thesedays scratching their heads as to why both the baseball and football teams are called the Browns?
No, but there’s a kid in DC (me) who’s going to use that line. Well done, CH, that just made my day.
As a fan of the local team here in DC, New Orleans can have the Wizards (kinda ties in with the voodoo) and we’ll take back the Bullets.`
Who’s on first?
It’s like the unretiring of numbers: You made a system of transferring nicknames when teams moved to a different city. It wasn’t a perfect system, but a workable one. It’s a bit late to undo the system, now, and it certainly doesn’t make sense to undo all of them at once. All it does is confuse the fans who grew up following the Utah Jazz, the Memphis Grizzlies, or whatever.
This might interest Paul on the back of the cyborg batting helmet clip in the Ticker.
When I was playing Little League back in the early 80s, our coach had us take BP every practice wearing an eye patch over the eye closest to the pitcher. It trained us to watch the ball deeper into the plate.
That season, I had my highest batting average by far. The cyborg look seems to be a technological advance on our old concept.
I always thought the ‘New Orleans Brass’ would be a good name. I don’t have the time nor inclination to actually make a design, but someone feel free to run with it. I realize that name was already a ECHL team that has been folded for about 10 years now. Not sure if that matters or not.
Shouldn’t matter. Former mayor Ray Nagin was an owner of the hockey team. There might be a trademark issue, but I don’t know.
Maybe it’s because it’s close to lunch hour, but I’m liking the idea of New Orleans Po’Boys. And if Oakland can have the Golden State Warriors, why not the Crescent City Crawfish?
Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but what’s the “K” patch thing on Stan’s sleeve? Was that standard on the jersey then? I was already living in St. Louis for that jersey, so I think (but don’t know) that would be familiar to me if it was.
That K is for Koho, the sweater manufacturer.
It also means it’s a replica and not a game quality jersey.
Stan the Fan(jersey).
That’s not necessarily true. There was a short period of time when CCM manufactured the home jerseys and KOHO did the road and third jerseys. I’m sure Stan the Man was given a game jersey instead of a replica by Big Al.
The logo on the sleeve is what indicates that it’s a replica. Koho’s game/authentic jerseys of that era had the logo link. The replicas had them on the sleeve as well.
It’s the same way today with Reebok logo.
Many soccer players exchange tops after games at all professional levels. Yes it is mainly a international deal, but you see a lot of teams do it in tournaments such as the Champions League or Europa Cup. You do not see it too often in domestic league play but you do see it in the FA Cup with small teams playing giants. Along with preseason friendlies. I have even seen it in MLS matches.
I’ve always wondered; do the players have to pay for all the replacements or do the teams?
The wording of this sentence made me laugh: “Utah State will unveil a new logo and football uniforms for the annual football game….”
I think it’s accurate to say that the Aggies only show up for one game a year.
New Orleans Rogues.
link unis?
You’re right, Jimbo. I forgot no one knows what a rogue really is, they’ll just think of X-Men. I thought it was decent spin on Pirates, Bucs, et al.
So…never mind.
Too bad, could hire Muggsy Bogues.
Subway (or someone) could intro a Roguey Hoagie.
And, yes, green and gold and (oh, my!) purple.
New Orleans Gambits? Remy was actually born in New Orleans, after all…
Same idea popped into my geeky brain. They could take the playing card motif and run with it.
Of course, Disney’s lawyers might have something to say about that.
I worked at the Little League World Series one summer in Williamsport, PA. I had the pleasure of meeting Stan Musial. He was very kind and very normal. He couldn’t have been a nicer guy. I remember his white patent leather loafers.
NBA names. It doesn’t make sense to have Grizzlies in Memphis. So I propose the following names.
New Orleans Jazz
Charlotte Hornets
Utah Grizzlies
and bringing back a USFL name and it couldn’t be more appropriate for the NBA the
Memphis Showboats
Well, Memphis had a World Football League team in the 70s named the Grizzlies…so I guess theirs precident. i remember they wanted to name the Memphis NBA team the Express after FedEx.
Utah isnt gona give up the Jazz name. Its too big of a brand now.
For NOLA, I think the name Soul is really good. Soul or Spirit. Or go old school and be the Buccs again
New Orleans Soul sounds like it should be an AFL or WNBA team.
Philly’s AFL team has the Soul name locked down; their flying musical note or whatever that logo’s supposed to be is pretty decent.
reason i said soul is because it describes what NOLA is all about. if i had control of the team, id want to market the party atmosphere and uniqueness(?) of NOLA. id want to instill local pride
you can do alot of cool stuff with soul. music, masks, balloons, streamers, colors whatever you want its so open ended its good.
SEAUXL – soul ?
seole , pronouce it like creole
the New Orleans Seole
How ’bout the New Orleans Funk? I’m thinking of musical groups such as the Meters.
Look at the similarities between the Memphis Grizzlies (WLF) and the Memphis Showboats (USFL) logos.
link
link
The showboats logo is a paddlewheel, is that supposed to be a paddlewheel behind the bear, too?
They were actually called the Southmen, but for some unknown reason had a bear in their logo, thus people referred to them as “Grizzlies” although that was not their name.
A more appropriate NBA name for Memphis would be
BLUES:
link
or
SOUNDS (although Sounds is the name of the AAA Baseball team in Nashville):
link
‘Memphis Belles’ would be a great Roller Derby name, with an edgy pinup girl/WWII aircraft style to the identity
The Memphis WFL franchise was originally slated to play in Toronto and be called the Northmen (the original logo was a polar bear?), but I think the CFL protested or something and they were forced to find a new home in the states.
I found this photo…notice there no nickname for the Memphis franchise and the ‘sun’ had not yet risen behind the bear.
link
The federal government, under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, drafted legislation — the Canadian Football Act — that would’ve banned the WFL from setting up shop in Toronto. They never needed to pass the law, as owner Johnny Bassett elected to relocate to Memphis. A couple years later, in an unrelated move, he transferred the Toronto Toros of the World Hockey Association to Birmingham, Alabama. He later owned part of the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL.
Blues link didn’t work
I’ll try this again
link
As an alumnus of the University of Arizona, and a hater of all things Scum Devils, it pains me to say this, but the stirrups in this pic look pretty sweet.
link
My suggestion for a new name for the Hornet?
The New Orleans Knights.
I think it keeps with the Saints theme, it’s alliterative sounding, has some good imagery associated, and ties in with Mardi Gras (Knights of Sparta, Knights of Babylon, etc.)
Too bad “Voodoo” is taken.
No, it’s a good thing that it’s taken…
Knights reminds me of the Night, from back in the Zubaz days of arena football:
link
For the record, I think it would be a great idea for the New Orleans NBA team to keep that Mardi Gras uni as their permanent road uni.
And they could make a predominantly gold version of it to wear at home.
New Orleans Cajuns.
Wow Ralph Lauren, a skirt for the women in the closing ceremonies. Way to force gender roles onto our athletes. Hope there is a pants option for the ladies who prefer not to wear skirts.
How about if there’s a skirt option for the guys?
Such a clever comeback Winter. Bravo.
Whatever. I just think it’s not that big of a deal.
link Filmed for all of four episodes in the first season.
Interestingly enough, the women’s top has buttons like a men’s shirt.
And Julie, is it not possible that Ralph Lauren’s people worked with the Olympians and that the female athletes might actually want to wear skirts?
And seriously, if the men don’t have an option in their leg attire, isn’t it only fair that women don’t have an option either?
You want equality? Sometimes equality means having just as few options as the next guy.
Damn you, Ralph Lauren with your oppressive trousers and skirts! Jorts for all!
This isn’t about quality, this is about sexual identity.
*equality
what ladies wouldn’t want to wear skirts?
I know a number of ladies who rarely wear skirts/dresses and prefer shorts/jeans/pants.
In the 8 years my wife and I have been together (counting pre-marriage), she’s worn a dress exactly twice- our wedding day and for formal night on the cruise.
Women who flat out feel uncomfortable wearing skirts as it goes against how they identify themselves.
Putting a straight man in a skirt is just as bad as putting a butch gay woman in a skirt. They both feel unnatural.
i donno…i’m not gay but i could see putting on a skirt if the right occasion arose…or a kilt
It’s not about what you wear, it’s about who you are. Clint Eastwood is no less a man in a skirt. That goes for everyone, really. Thinking otherwise is giving in to those very gender roles you seem to be against.
I’m straight and the right occasion did, in fact, arise. So I put on a skirt.
I hate wearing ties, suits and the like but when the right occasion arises, I put them on even though they go against how I identify myself.
i think the *right occasion* might…might be, oh, i donno
representing my fucking country in the closing ceremonies of the olympics
*butch gay woman* (im sure you meant no offense by those terms) or not, she should respect the solemnity of the occasion and wear a fucking skirt
im sure there are a lot of athletes *coughseahawkscough* who might think their uniforms are ridiculous clown suits, but they’ll still wear them, even if it offends their own personal view of their *self*
because, you see, julie — the olympics are not about *ME* but about *we*
put the militant feminism aside for five minutes and deal with it…the women can wear whatever the fuck they want when they’re in the village and on their own time, but when they’re repping the you ess of eh, they can wear the goddam uniform they’re provided
Phil
I will disagree with you on this one.
As far as my saying ‘butch gay women’ it was to differentiate from femme gay women. You know, those who identify as feminine, wear skirts and dresses, etc.
Simply saying, it’s 2012, there’s no need for playing the “you wear pink, you wear blue” game anymore.
And since you’re not gay, you really have no idea how it feels to be forced to conform to gender norms. So for those athletes who have trained their entire lives to oh say.. represent their fucking country… maybe they’d also like to feel comfortable in their body while walking in out in front of the world.
Leave it to New Era to pervert what could have been an awesome throwback opportunity. I’d be willing to bet that the Sox throwback jerseys will have a Majestic logo on the sleeve, too.
Don’t be so quick to condemn New Era. It could be that they just worked from the specs given to them by the Red Sox/MLB.
‘Zactly. Most likely MLB and/or the Sawx, but probably MLB, is to blame on this.
Personally, I don’t mind. Big-league caps have the MLB logo on the back these days. I’d rather they didn’t, but they do, and so there’s no special reason to complain when any particular cap does. The problem is the system, not the individual instance. (Which is to say, I do mind, but I don’t mind about this particular cap; I mind about all MLB caps.) And on the plus side, that’s such an excellent cap, it’s almost an upside that it looks more like a regular game cap. Easier to imagine the Yanks wearing it as a regular road cap!
Honestly, ever since I saw the MLB rectangle on the back of the Dodgers’ hat, I’ve been against *any* superfluous advertisement on any part of the uniform; including league insignias, makers marks and recognition of championships. It really hit home with the Dodgers because it diminished the white squatchee on the blue hat.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t somebody spot the Houston .45s cap w/o the MLB logo? I’m pretty sure the Brooklyn caps the Dodgers just wore had green underbrims as well. Seems like there’s really no standard to how the throwbacks are being designed.
I’m surprised at the lack of Douchebaggery claims with that polo gear.
If Nike can get attacked for their logos on football jerseys (criticism that I, as a guy who tends to roll his eyes whenever corporate douchebaggery gets mentioned on this site, completely understand), then Polo should be taking a beating right now for having such a large logo on the closing ceremony gear of our country. They appear to have 3 different sizes, the smallest of which would do fine (especially since it is in a circle that I am sure mentions the US Olympic team in some fashion), the 2nd one is okay too but the 3rd is ridiculous. That logo is iconic so there is no need to make it so obnoxious.
My hope is that the giant logo is only on the village gear (though apparently that is the stuff that says USA), or that no one from the US Olympic team opts for the obnoxious logo gear.
I’ve long suspected that Paul is in the pocket of Big Polo.
Give it time. I’m sure there will be plenty of exploration of Olympix douchebaggery as we get closer to the games. You can’t expect the full Nike the very first time we get a glimpse at a giant pony logo.
i know paul spelt it “olympix” yesterday
please let him be the only one to spell it that way
k. thanks. bye
Fear not, Phil, I was using that spelling to describe Paul’s hypothetical future writing on the subject. Implied attribution!
Scott, this is actually not the first time Paul has called attention to a giant Polo logo. He did a link back in the Uni Watch blog’s halcyon days.
The Polo gear might not really qualify as a uniform, per se. I don’t like the horsey because it’s just in poor taste, not necessarily because of logo-creep. We’ll see plenty of Adidas douchebagging in the Olympics though, don’t worry.
It might, actually. The Olympians get instructed as to when and where to wear their stuff. Polo in the Village and at the Opening/Closing Ceremonies (per tradition, the Opening Ceremonies clothing won’t be revealed until the Ceremonies themselves). Nike on the podium. Sponsorship protection and all that crap.
Not really uni-related, but I saw this interesting piece on the Olympics today. Seems like there’s political drama already. Love the line, “Officials are concerned the spectacle of the barge would lead to traffic chaos and the possibility of spectators throwing themselves from bridges,” link
New Orleans resident here… I would not want to see our basketball team take the “Jazz” nickname back. It belongs in Utah. They made the name, its theirs.
And its never really offended me. Its sort of quirky, that’s all. Yeah, there aren’t a lot of Jazz clubs in SLC. But Jazz is an American institution now. People like Jazz in Utah. All is good.
I *am* for re-naming the Hornets. Just keep it unique. There is PLENTY of unique stuff in NOLA beyond jazz.
I don’t really know where else to post this (not really uni-related) but doesn’t anyone at SI proof read things.
Can you spot the ridiculous error?
link
Is that rag still run by interns?
Of course that’s uni-related. The Sox wore their road greys by mistake that night.
And the Mets win it!!
Robert De Niro was never a MLB ump?
Not to mention a superb example of why high tops look just peachy on ballplayers (eyeroll).
While I thought that the most famous play At Fenway was going to be Keith Foulke lobbing Edgar RenterÃa’s grounder to Doug Mientkiewicz to cement the Sox 2004 World Series win, that miscue by Bucker in front of the home crowd made Fisk’s and Dent’s homers seem utterly forgettable to Red Sox Nation.
Now you see it, now you don’t. They pulled the picture of SI.com
I say New Orleans should have their stadium announcer speak entirely in French during every second quarter.
The tradition will be called… The French Quarter.
Thank you.
You magnificent bastard.
Did you read my book?
That’s as bad as my idea a while back to start a softball that worn the then-new Tampa Bay hosery, spoke with French accents for the entire game, and called ourselves…
“Socks Rays Blue.”
At least there won’t be any floods. Because the water’s “l’eau”
That batting helmet cyborg training aid for batters would give someone a great head start into making a Daft Punk helmet.
Here is the training aid attachment on a batting helmet:
And here is one of the members of Daft Punk:
No shit! that would helped when making my Halloween costume a few years back: link
Are those the bottoms of soda cans for the ears? Way to be resourceful!
Obviously that’s a batting helmet for most of it, but what did you use for the visor and the jaw/mouth? Also what did you use to keep everything together? Some kind of putty or glue?
link
It was a helmet, heavy paper and coke cans.I taped everything in place and then I used this plaster they recommended online and then sanded that and then spray painted the whole shabangabang.
The visor was a piece of clear plastic that I used a heavy duty sand paper which was actually like wire grating, and – after first coloring the plastic with a sharpie, I glued the grating onto the inside to make it look even darker.
I glued that in and I was good to go.
though a lot of my neck was showing so I ended up buying one of these things: link
RIP Levon Helm. You were The Band.
take a load off, annie
“New ESPN piece today, in which I’m inviting readers to rename and redesign the Hornets. Get crackin’, lads.”
Only ‘lads’ can play? Humph. I’ll take my crayons and go home.
Can’t spell “ladies” without “lads”…
A lot of indignant chicas in the comments today – not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I hope your skirt has pockets so you don’t have to carry those crayons the whole way home.
Any one have a good blank NBA jersey template I could use to start my ideas in Photoshop? I lost the one I had when doing an OKC one.
Hey, and it’s already the right base color!
What can I say, I loves me some purp!
New Orleans Swing
Since nicknames are already shared among professionals sports teams — e.g., Rangers, Jets, Giants and Kings — I say let Tom Benson have the Jazz back in New Orleans and permit Utah to use “Saints” as in Latter Day Saints.
Sorry for the old news.
Regarding Tuesday’s ticker from the “Here We Go Again” Dept.; There was an item about the Johns Hopkins Lacrosse cool throwbacks. But there was no mention of their opponents. Maryland’s special state pride flag uni’s from Under Armor.
Paul, you don’t have to like them, but they should have been mentioned.
Maryland upset Hopkins in lacrosse’s oldest rivalry. Go Terps!
My favorite among those is Cottonmouths. I don’t think there’s another snake themed team in the NBA, right?
Knickerbockers.
New Orleans Swamp People
I had a great idea for a Hornets rebrand but someone beat me to it…back in December. I don’t care for the Nola wordmark on the jersey but this one is fine!
The Loan Mods should be done by a real estate broker period. It is quite simple in California the upfront money goes into a trust. After services are rendered then they get paid. 25% for consultation, 75% when loan mod is complete. I believe it should be 25% initial consultation, 25 loan preparation 50% when loan is complete. I am sorry people an attorney doing a loan mod is an attorney who can’t find any other work. We are the people who talk to the banks. We are the people who are going to get them a short-sale if the loan mod gets rejected. If you want a loan mod use a reliable broker. P.S Reginaldo if you can’t afford your neg am you can’t afford a loan mod, if an attorney says you can well you just lost your retainer fee. Benny
