By Phil Hecken, with Terry Duroncelet
No, the splash photo isn’t from yesterday’s seizure-inducing Notre Dame vs. Maryland game (Terry will have more on that below), that’s the golden-domed Jenny Sweet, modeling the Notre Dame gold helmet that Paul received (and also modeled in Friday’s post) from adidas in preparation for yesterday’s game. It was one of the hits of yesterday’s UW gathering (Paul will have a full party write up during the week), and I think I may have been the only one not to try it on … I mean — who really wants RyCo’s sloppy seconds?
I kid, of course — it was a great party, and a bunch of Yinzers an entire Pittsburgh contingent, including Jenny, Ryan Connelly and Jason Bernard made the six hour drive to Brooklyn — totally unbeknownst to either Paul or myself until they arrived. Twas a great surprise. I’d never met Bernard or Ms. Sweet before, but they were a great, fun couple, and the party was a blast. Good to also see some of the NY regulars back at the old haunt again too. Anyway…on to yesterday (and the early week) games. Here’s Terry:
I’m pretty sure everyone’s sick and tired of hearing about Sanduskygate and Paternogate and McQuearygate, so allow me to direct you to the front gate leading to today’s NCAA rundown.
• In the battle of the Technical Institutes on Thursday, the visiting Virginia Tech Hokies changed up their maroon-over-white look a little bit by *thankfully* wearing white socks (they usually wear black socks) and adding a white-orange-white NFL stripe to the helmet. And — as with recent VT protocol — the stripe was truncated in the back. That’s probably to accommodate for the Revo Speed helmet’s design. Also, VT head coach Frank Beamer (along with the rest of the VT coaching staff) was wearing a sideline coat with “Virginia Tech” going across the front rendered in what looks to be tackle-twill maroon lettering… in the same base-color as the coat. Why? Just… why? As for the other Technical Institute, one of the Georgia Tech players was having a TECHnical issue with one of the Ts on his helmet.
• Boise State wore last week’s white helmets, with orange jerseys and pants. What’s odd is that they were using the file tab jerseys from last year. So you’re willing to buy new grey jerseys for this year (different from the 2010 Pro Combats), but you don’t want to spend money to buy updated jerseys that use an actual school color? They did wear this year’s orange pants, though. [I’d say: blame Nike. — PH]
• Tulsa wore retro uniforms (not sure if they’re actual throwbacks) against Marshall. The look included a block “T” on the front of the helmets. Here’s the gallery.
• LSU had a non-conference game against Western Kentucky University, so we got a rare look at their purple jerseys.
• Louisville wore “patriotic” helmets for their post-Veterans (or is it Veteran’s?) Day game against Pitt (with thanks to David Greenwald for the second pic). Ditto for Rutgers when they played Army.
• Illinois wore orange against Michigan.
• Some of the Tennessee players had new compression shirts with some kind of slogan and the endzone checkerboard design sublimated on the sleeves.
• Five helmets are enough for Oregon, right? Yeah… what the hell was I thinking when I said that? Let’s throw in a new Jaguars-style helmet. It has the green-to-black/black-to-green pixie dust effect to it. Not bad at all. In that same game, the Stanford band — known for their unique sound and random drums — had a snare drummer with last year’s Pac 10 logo on his snare drum. [Also note the white “O” on the Oregon helmet — I think that’s the first time they’ve worn that. — PH]
• No photo, but New Mexico wore white helmets with the current Lobo logos on the sides.
• UCLA & Utah played in a snowy atmosphere in Salt Lake (thanks for the tip, Grant Pepper).
• Pitt State wore camo jerseys against Missouri Southern State University. Credit Luis Fernando Aranda for the tip. He also writes with “The red shoulder yoke I believe is a new addition as last year they wore similar camo unis versus MSSU. Paired with yellow pants, not the best look.”
• Phucking Phooey on Maryland for not swapping the shoulder designs. You had two months and a week to correct the error! Frackin’ idiots… -_- Oh, and Notre Dame wore this helmet (and slogan shirt) with their annual green jerseys in that same game. Not bad for the Shamrock Bowl, but I don’t think it would work as a full-time look. You can’t tell your team to “PROTECT THIS HOUSE!” if you’re not leading by example. Luckily, Maryland head coach Randy Edsall teaches example by demonstration… or something like that. And one of the ND players lost part of his compression shirt at the shirttail. I managed to catch video on it.
• What’s this? Two Pac 12 teams wearing their standard uniform combos? Who’s idea was this? Thanks to Phil for that pic.
Thanks Terry — another great roundup.
Colorize This!
Occasionally, I will be featuring wonderful, high-quality black and white photographs that are just begging to be colorized.
Another smallish offering today, featuring (of course), the G&G Boys. So lets get right into it. Since he gets me his colorizations early, George Chilvers has been leading off, and will continue this week. Here’s George, a-hurling:
Hi Phil
After some requests for this last week.
Funny what you see when you colourise though. I hadn’t seen the horse and cart in the original monochrome picture.
George
And yet another from George:
Hi Phil
This follows on from last week’s posting, and is another shot of members of the 1950 British Lions rugby tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1950, showcasing a variety of jerseys.
Following last week’s three Irishmen, we stick with the Celtic Fringe and have two Welshmen and an Irishman.
On the left in his amber and black Newport jersey is Ken Jones and in the middle in a training sweater (no fancy Adidas tracksuits then!) is George Norton of Bective Rangers and Ireland. To the right though (suffering a wardrobe malfunction) is Bob Evans also of Newport. However, he is clearly not in the amber and black of his club, and the distinctive pattern of his jersey makes me 95% certain it’s that of another top Rugby Union team, Leicester (now called “Leicester Tigers”, a strange name for a team who have no tiger colours!!). Once again, it may well be that he has acquired it from a colleague.
Original also attached, as it’s hard to link.
Best wishes
George
Thanks George!
And the second half of the G&G tandem is Gary Chanko, with a mystery football photo:
Another vintage football image submittal this week and one of my favorite players as a kid. Shown here in this 1956 college photo, he went on to become a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Surprisingly his college career as a defensive back was probably just as notable as the position he played as a pro. Go to the B&W original link if you need help identifying him.
Gary
Thanks Gary!
OK, that’s it for this week. If you have a photo you’d like colorized, or just want to join in the fun, shoot me a line. Hope to see a few more colorizers (I know you’re out there) get back in the swing of it.
Uni Tweaks
We have another new set of tweaks today.
If you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.
Remember, if possible, try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per tweak. You guys have been great at keeping to that, and it’s much appreciated!
And so, lets begin:
We start with Glenn Simpkins, with a correction, and some new tweaks:
Uni tweaking to share today:
Reds: a small correction to the tweaks of mine that were posted September 4, 2011 (road and home). Correction being removing ALL black and using the same shade of red for both jerseys.
The “I still call them ANAHEIM” Angels: New unis based on their late 70’s-80’s set: Home and Road.
With NNOB and TV numbers removed (which never have a place with arched lettering), their current numeral font smoothed off, and a “just to agitate the Uniform Gods” red so-called softball top, it’s perfect: Since the Angels are the red yin to Dodger blue yang, the red cap, belt, and sturups should be w2hat they wear with the regular whites and greys, and the blue ones should be worn with the red jersey.
Next go ’round, I have another stab at the Rox to send.
–Glenn Simpkins
Next up is Jonathan Nisula, with an Iggles redux:
Phil,
I modernized the old “Randall Cunningham” era uniforms on DeSean Jackson. I eliminated most of the black trim and went with silver pants, along with tweaking the shade of green. Enjoy!
And to close us down, we have Justin Dilks who brings back a one-hit wonder:
Hey guys, big fan of the site.
I heard discussion earlier this season that the Phillies were thinking of resurrecting the universally, and in my opinion unfairly, panned “Saturday Night Special” jerseys from 1979. I did a take on that, using the contemporary color scheme and logos. With the chest number, the sleeve numerals became unnecessary, so I decided to add the rarely-used Liberty Bell logo in the empty space.
I hope you guys enjoy it, it was a lot of fun making it.
—
Justin Dilks
And that’s all for this week. Back next weekend with more.

The dangers of an equipment malfunction…
And, as always, the full-size.
Jim Vilk’s 5 & 1
And now for the part of the post that I wait up all night for you’ve all been waiting for…
I didn’t take a look at what is to follow, but I have a hunch Jim may have redeemed himself this week…let’s see:
Terp Tracker – Woulda been better with the shelmet…
Honorable Mentions to Oregon . . . State/California – Now *that’s* an Oregon team with a good modern font.
And to Arizona State/Washington State – Two more teams without athletic block font, Phil…
5. Marshall/Tulsa – Was going to pick Nebraska/Penn State…until Tulsa trotted out these throwbacks.
4. Navy/SMU – The horsey heads are going strong down the homestretch.
3. Ohio State/Purdue – Yet another good modern font!
2. Western Kentucky/LSU – Might have been #1 if LSU got to wear the white jerseys…
1. Texas A&M/Kansas State – …so this won out for having the better contrast.
And the bad one: Wyoming/Air Force – Too much white on a sunny day, and too much other stuff, too.
Hmmm…not too bad, but I still think the clusterfuck seizure-inducing helmet mess that was ND/MD merited some strong consideration for the “bad one.” And you didn’t need to include THIS Wyoming getup just to make up for last weekend’s *unfortunate* choice. Those aren’t nearly as bad as this crap.
2011 Duck Tracker
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Jake Hurley has stepped up to the plate and taken over the “Duck Tracker” for 2011. What is the Duck Tracker? Quite simply, it tracks each and every uniform combination the Ducks have worn for the 2011 season. He steps in for former tracker Mike Princip, whose non-Uni Watch activities will preclude him from tracking for 2011.
Jake’s been busy with the Duck Tracker, and he and I actually got into an almost heated discussion as to whether or not the helmet the U of O wore yesterday was actually a new helmet, or one they’d worn before. Jake’s got a *few* words about his updates and some good new stuff. Here he is:
Late in the 2008 season Nike presented The University of Oregon with a special uniform combination entitled “Lights Out”. They were nothing more than a BFBS uniform combination for the ducks. The uniforms featured “duck wings” on the shoulders of the uniform; this was the beginning of the modern “Wing” era. The only difference between this black uniform and the current one is that the “light out” uniforms had a silver NOB while the current one has a black on black NOB. Nike was conducting a test run of these uniforms, would the players and more importantly the fans like them? They would, merchandise sold very well, the players loved them, and won an important game all at the same time. With this positive reaction Nike now knew what the next generation of Oregon uniforms would look like. Late the next fall Oregon held a uniform unveiling and officially ended the “diamond plate” era. The new uniforms all featured the wing design on the shoulders of the uniforms. The color black played a more prominent role than before and the added color of “carbon” or silver stood out. They have been mixing and matching these uniforms ever since that date.
Oregon is famous for “never wearing the same uniform combination twice”, well at least not the same one twice in a season. Oregon wore a uniform combination last weekend that many people thought was the same as last years “civil war” combo. An argument took place in the comments over various things involving Oregon’s uni combos. So what I decided to do was to compile a chart of every single combo that they have ever worn in the “wing era” to date. I think that you guys will find this very interesting. Please give it a good look over and let me know what you think and if it was helpful.
Last night the ducks wore a strange helmet, green with a white “O”. Some people think it is a brand new helmet, I think it is their regular green helmet with a white logo. Here is some evidence to back up my claim. What do you think?
And now, here’s the updated 2011 Duck Tracker.
Thanks Jake. Great stuff. Readers? What say you?
And that will do it for this fine Sunday. Thanks to Terry D. and great to meet all the fine UWers who made the trek to Sheep Station yesterday (yes, even you Matt Powers). Have a great day, enjoy the NFL, and I’ll catch y’all next weekend. Cheers.
“They should have had volunteers paint the field all-orange last night. The rules just said they couldn’t wear mono-blue on the blue turf. Didn’t say nothing about wearing mono-Orange on an orange turf. They could’ve gotten away with that at least once.” — Rob Holecko
Boise State probably didn’t buy updated jerseys in school colors as their turf is already in school colors.
I think the Maryland thing about now swapping designs between the shoulders/helmet is to convey basically two different uniforms depending on which side you are looking at; ie the yellow or red side. if you swap them up it looks more correct from the front, but the side views become confusing and you lose the illusion.
Vandy wears gold jerseys with new black helmets vs. Kentucky.
link
Good look as far as I’m concerned, although I still am attached to their classic gold helmets.
That almost made Honorable Mention today.
Not crazy about the wraparound stripe on Vandy, but it is subdued. All in all it was a nice looking matchup.
Snowy game in Salt Lake, Utah vs. UCLA
link
I feel like an idiot for missing that UCLA/Utah game XP
And totally missed Vandy in gold, but those aren’t new black helmets. They’ve been wearing those on-and-off all season.
i added the snow photo to the text…thanks
“The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran’s Day or Veterans’ Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling.[1]”
-Wikipedia
Also, I think the Tennessee shirts say “Rocky Top”
Cool. Thanks.
Yep, the UT compression shirts say “Rocky Top” indeed.
Screw the uniforms. link
Colouriser Chilvers, you know, went to Wembly Stadium and — through some kind of mystical alchemy — was able to concoct a 1-0 victory for England over Spain. “1-0” is pronounced “one nil”. All accounts say mighty Spain outplayed the homeboys, and so both coaches agreed that George was the only possible reason for such a startling result. On the pitch. In their kits.
I love both of George’s submissions today, but there’s no denying the special wonderfulness of Mr. Evans’s fly.
Funnily enough I was called an alchemist on another site a few weeks ago:
link (30 September)
Better than a lot of things I’ve been called in my life :)
I’ve been starting using “nil” to describe scores in other sports and my soccer-loving friends give me so much shit for it, Con.
Why do your soccer friends do that? Connie is right – the score was “one nil”.
Because nil is apparently “our thing”. And I respect that, but it’s also just a great term in general.
What nonsense:
A quick random trawl –

(Field) hockey link

When I’m announcing a football game (US Style) and the score is 22-0, it goes old saying 22-nothing so I have incorporated the nil for variety.
FYI- Ducks helmet last night is actually Green/ Purple/ Yellow like a Mallard Duck (not black/green)
link
it’s a paint called “Chromalusion” manufactured by DuPont.
Yep! Just a whole new feel with the white decal set.
Now I had not thought about that explanation. That is cool.
Sweet. Shall we call it their “Mallard Helmets”?
calling it the “Mallard helmet” is the actual intention.
I could be the dumb one here but if I’m not mistaken this is a joke right? We are all in agreement that this is just the standard green helmet, correct?
well, it’s not the standard green helmet so no.
It’s the same old green, trust me.
This is an email Phil forwarded me that he got from someone who knows what he is talking about.
Believe it or not, that’s the same green shell Oregon normally uses, minus the different side decal and front and back bumpers.
The helmet paint that is used is called Chrome Illusion. It changes colors depending on how the light hits it, or lack of light.
If that helmet is used in a day game, in some areas, it is bright kelly while others look dark green. But for a night game, some look dark green while others look black.
It’s supposed to represent the changing green of a Mallard Duck.
It seems to be brought up every year so I thought I would mention it. I do believe that since they let a separate company (Not Riddell or Schutt) paint the helmets year to year, that the mixture of shades may be a little different.
Here is the company that first painted the helmets back in 99 when I think this helmet was released. Not for sure about the date. link
Great articles by the way.
“This is an email Phil forwarded me that he got from someone who knows what he is talking about.”
I’m not sure if you saw me post the same info as this guy “who knows what he’s talking about”.
The green helmet that you’re talking about is just a green with gold candy clearcoat (w/ “Ghost flames” on it), and it’s not the same paint as CHROMALUSION helmets that was recently introduced.
It is definitely not their standard green helmets. I would have to agree with the assessment that this helmet is comparable to the Jacksonville Jaguars style of helmets, where the helmet appeared to seemingly change colors depending on the viewers perspective. Just changing the logo color on the helmets from yellow to white wouldn’t create this apparent change in helmet color. From afar, the helmets appeared more black than anything else.
Back in 1998, Jeff Gordon ran a special Chromalusion paint scheme in The Winston. You can see the different colors as the light hits it…
link
The Green helmet is exactly the same “Mallard Green” helmet the Ducks have been wearing since Joey was QB. The only difference was the “O” color (White). This will be the last year for the Mallard Green, Carbon Graphite, White, Flat Black, & Green Bay Gold helmets. Everything will be redone for next year.
Tennessee’s compression shirt most likely said “Rocky Top” which is the school’s fight song
that what i assumed too….
Tennessee’s official fight song is “Down the Field”. Get it right or pay the price.
I’m Calling It Ibrox.

When Army does not get overly patriotic with flag logos and flag patches and one-off flag-inspired uniforms, why must so many other teams?
Most virtues, if you’ve got it, you don’t feel the need to prove it. If someone wore a “Most Humble” blue ribbon on his shirt, we’d take that as a sign that he isn’t actually all that humble. Maybe patriotism works the same way?
Maybe because fans appreciate patriotism?
“He who speaks does not know. He who knows does not speak.”
I think the (away)Nebraska / (home)Penn State game is the best uniform combination possible in college football. Especially since the game was played during the afternoon.
It’s funny – this 5 and 1 feature has me watching my Saturday football games differently… Love uni-watch.
Yeah, that’s a great look, and the afternoon sun does bring out its greatness even more. Next year’s combo won’t be as great, when the Huskers are the home team…not enough contrast, then.
So the rule at LSU is white shirts for conference home games, and purple for non-conference?
***
That’s me in the background of the RyCo pic. Far right, old-school Miami jersey. TK and I are comparing our respective Brooklyn Dodgers caps.
I think LSU would probably wear white for every game if they could. If I’m not mistaken… the NCAA has some (really stupid) rule about road teams always wearing white and the home team essentially needing permission from their opponent to wear the white at home. So… conference opponents let them do it because it’s tradition and all that, while some non-conference teams won’t.
(please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about that)
Seems plausible, but it’s hard for me to believe that a total cupcake like WKU would have the balls to go into Baton Rouge and tell LSU what to do.
You’re right about the rule, wrong about non-conference refusing the white at home look THE.
LSU has gone to the white/conference, purple/non-conference home game look for the last several years.
@LIMatt
…AND we were complaining that the Tottenham fixture list has us not getting to see a match together for two more months!! Great to see you yesterday, buddy! COYS!
T.K.
Very nice job with those Oregon charts Jake! I love how in the ‘school colors’ column; ‘NO WAY!’ for the championship games. I agree with the sentiment. I need to see some school colors, give me a fucking hybrid, anything resembling the school colors for these big games, please!
I completely agree with you, although the only reason is says “NO WAY!!” is because those two games were the only two that had zero school colors on them at all. Every other combo, no matter how ugly still had a hint of a school color somewhere.
Also I’m very glad that you enjoyed the charts, be sure to check out the updated version. To your credit the last two duck trackers were major resources for this project.
Some of the Tennessee players had new compression shirts with some kind of slogan and the endzone checkerboard design sublimated on the sleeves.
That’s why I keep posting that Kentucky should never have used a checkerboard design on their unis. Of course it could represent them getting run over regularly…
Thought ND looked pretty cool, but my favorite part of it was something everyone wasn’t wearing: The leprechaun on the sleeve of the compression shirts. Funky touch, Adidas.
Shamrock was fun, but the helmet texture?
What kid doesn’t grow up wanting to play big-time college football with his head looking like a solid gold giant golf ball.
I think that Irish uniform is better than their normal one. But yes the helmet was a bit much.
See?
link
HAHAHAHAHA I laughed out loud at that one.
Maryland has the replica pride jerseys for sale in their online shop now. Some design elements that might have been missed because the jerseys are usually only seen on the players tucked in is that there is “Fear the Turtle” written on the bottom front of the jersey, as well as a single star above the UA tag. I assume that this is for UMD’s lone national championship (1952-53 IIRC) in the same fashion that some soccer teams uses stars on the jersey to represent their number of championships.Here’s the link
link
Aw, man…I didn’t know the yinzers were making an appearance!
Had the pleasure of meeting RyCo before, but not Jason and Jenny. Hopefully someday.
Hope everyone had a great time.
the yinzers had some surprisingly nice things to say about you, jim (so did TK)…except for your
man pursesatchelIt. Was. A. Camera.
sure it was
Oh, and Jenny…very nice cleats.
“Also, VT head coach Frank Beamer (along with the rest of the VT coaching staff) was wearing a sideline coat with “Virginia Tech” going across the front rendered in what looks to be tackle-twill maroon lettering… in the same base-color as the coat. Why? Just… why?”
Because that is the latest gimmick from Nike. Arkansas’s coaches had similar jackets. link
And you didn’t need to include THIS Wyoming getup just to make up for last weekend’s *unfortunate* choice.
Trust me, this wasn’t a makeup call. I just didn’t like this matchup.
The only thing wrong with last week was the trim on the jersey. This week…1) the shoulder thingies, 2) the mustard pit stains.
Air Force looks so much better in the gray and blue unis. At least gray is close to silver, which is a school color. Black is not, and adding it to that unfortunate side trim is a killer.
Hmm, so Iowa doesn’t borrow the Steelers look, or vice versa…they both modeled themselves after Bub’s Pub, right?
Another fine Benchies.
Nice to see Ohio State Purdue game make the 5&1. Purdue in the black and Ohio State in the white was a good looking game.
From yesterday. Ricko as you know I love the kid cards. Plus the added pics and info you share.
Pretty weak selection for the &1. I would have gone with TCU -Boise.
are you kidding?
no team dressed in mono-orange will ever receive the “&1” … no matter how awful the game looks
it’s like the secret, “get out of jail free card” teams who wish to avoid the dreaded and-one know they can play
Well, if the Hurricanes wore link with link they’d receive it.
The Canes wore orange-over-orange in the 1985 season opener against Florida. And lost.
I’d put my money on never seeing that again.
I’d wear that…
I’d wear that all-orange Toy Combat uni they wore last year, but not the combo I proposed above.
Long time no see, TK! How ya been?
I had them listed as one of the contenders, thinking Boise would wear the blue/gray/blue combo again. The white/orange/orange, while not perfect, redeemed that game enough to spare it.
Wazzu’s colors wasn’t their normal look. Usually it’s a silver flake, yesterday was a flat gray.
It wasn’t that LSU didn’t “get” to wear their white jerseys vs Western Kentucky. They traditionally wear their purple jerseys at home at least once at night vs. a non-conference team.
But was this particular night by choice?
Yes. LSU wears purple at home versus non-conference opponents.
I know. That’s what I said:
“LSU had a non-conference game against Western Kentucky University, so we got a rare look at their purple jerseys.”
Julio Jones has the double-sock thing going with the Falcons’ throwbacks.
So many good contributors on Sunday morning. The colorizers, George and Gary. The college uni guys. Terry and JimV. Jake for the Ducktracker and of course Phil. And others too.
Go to this link for the Oregon Duck Tracker chart that I had intended to share today, the one phil linked was only a draft.

now updated in the main article
Thanks Phil

And, yes, the cover boy is THAT Frank Solich.
Also, my dad had the briefcase pictured on page 142 and his initials were also JS. He carried it until he retired in 2005 and now I have it.
Things I learned from paging through that magazine:
1. In 1965, men were interested primarily in scotch, dress shoes, cardigans and airlines
2. In 1965, Pete Rose’s nickname was Joe Hustle (p. 120)
3. In 1965, pizza was sliced using a pair of scissors (p. 156)
Did I miss anything?
I thought Pete Rose’s nickname was Charlie Hustle…
So did I until I read that SI

Cigarettes.
Super 8 Cameras.
I was at the LSU/WKU game last night.
Western Kentucky’s helmet logo is a red towel…a freakin’ TOWEL! Their mascot is a freakin’ red blob…I guess it’s supposed to be a towel. I thought I was watching South Park.
link
That cuz they’re the Hilltoppers?
That represent planting a flag after you take the hill or something?

It looked like a hand holding a towel…
link
Stoopid bears alts…
EB80 still wearing orange shoes, expect another fine.
Yuck.
Though, we should be grateful they’re not going full 1938 throwback link.
The least they could do is save those things for non-traditional rivals. The Packers? The Lions? Stop embarrassing us!
If I have to stage a commando raid I’m stealing those orange shirts. And the navy pants while I’m at it.
The navy pants? You shut your whore mouth.
Niners Giants on a grass field… looking good.
Kudos from me, by the way, to Gary this week for the picture he’s done.
As he will agree getting skin tones right is one of the hardest things, and he’s done superbly well with this one.
both you and gary continue to amaze (and, i think, scare off the other colorizers with your awesomeness ;) )
i’m but a mere rookie compared to you (and i haven’t had the time to colorize anything since last winter), but i too will agree that skin tones are the hardest…
maybe if my last effort hadn’t taken me about a month i’d still be doing them, particularly with the tricks and techniques both you and gary taught us
thanks again to the both of you lads…
Thanks.
Hopefully you’ll get a few more colourisers over the next few weeks because although I’ll give you something for next weekend, I’m out of the frame for 2-3 weeks after that (I know, I know!!)
My daughter is now teaching in the UAE in Abu Dhabi (she got (free) tickets today for the Grand Prix and Paul McCartney concert tonight, after seeing Britney the other night – although she says she was very disappointing!!).
So – a week on Tuesday (22nd) we’re flying out to visit her for my birthday on the 24th (the actual number ends in a “0” and if I tell you that on the day I was born Gigi opened on Broadway with Audrey Hepburn in the lead and Truman was president…).
We’ll be there a couple of weeks, so I won’t be doing any colourising. So now is the time for all you other colourisers to get dusting off the skills and showing what you can do. Practice is purely how we have got to where we are, and I know that I certainly am still learning.
I know skin tones give me a huge problem. Sometimes lips too. George and Gary do great work. Nice job on the Duke, Sonny Jurgenson colorized.
Thanks guys. Yep skin tones are always a challenge.
I actually spent the most effort on getting the leather chin strap and helmet padding colors accurate. There’s three different leather colors involved and getting all correct took a lot of trial and error.
The Falcons suffered their first lost wearing their throwbacks.
Happy Terry is happy =)
Too bad the Saints (currently) lack a white-jersey throwback kit. Woulda looked good alongside the ATL!
I don’t Hester know what would Sandberg make me wonder Jordan this, but is there any city that has three different pro teams with the same number retired?
#1 in New York: Ray Flaherty, (football) Giants; Billy Martin, Yankees; Eddie Giacomin, Rangers.
#7 in New York: Mel Hein, (football) Giants; Mickey Mantle, Yankees; Rod Gilbert, Rangers.
#3 in Chicago: Harold Baines, White Sox; Bronko Nagurski, Bears; Pierre Pilote, Blackhawks.
As many retired numbers as the Celtics and Bruins have, I couldn’t find a three-way match with the Red Sox or Pats.
Nice research!
3’s also retired for Keith Magnuson by the Blackhawks – they retired the number in both players’ honor at the same time back in ’08 (although for Magnuson the honor was posthumous).
Wyoming is voted the bad uni twice in two weeks with totally different looks? Im starting to think that Jim has a Cowboy State Bias….You don’t mess with a high-falootin’, rootin, tootin’, son of a gun from ol’ Wyoming
Easy there…PHIL wanted them to be the bad one last week. I rightfully chose another matchup.
yeah, easy there kevin, i would never have given them that dishonor this week — that was all vilk
interestingly, because we argue over this shit all the time, the TWO times vilk has picked oregon to be the “bad one,” both times WYO had MUCH WORSE outfits and much worse opponents looking outfits … but he’s kept them out — then he goes and throws me a “bone” this week by picking them when they didn’t deserve it — air force may not have a great uni, but there was nothing wrong with yesterday’s matchup
there were at least 5 or 6 games (if not more) that were deserving of the “and one” spot before wyo got it today
Sigh…
Again, this wasn’t a “bone.”
And while link wasn’t perfect, it was only a couple of tweaks shy of awesome. The wonderful contrast of colors is what kept it from being a serious &1 contender.
Hey Terry,
Texas Tech was wearing special jerseys for the holiday, complete with an American flag inspired decal. Great Job with the Roundup!!link
Also, the Duck Tracker is Phenomenal Jake! And I think that the helmet is the same as it always is as well, but the white logo made the color stand out more.
No, it definitely had a gradiant from green to black like the Jags helmet. Also, the “O” appeared to have some metallic look. Was it white or was it a bright metallic silver? Which would fit the color scheme better.
Sorry kevin but it was the same old helmet as always, and the decal was white. I got an email from phil this morning that he had received from someone who was well informed. The mallard paint thing from above in the comments is actually accurate. They have been wearing it since ’99. I has always changed colors in the light, or lack there of. Look at the photos I posted that show the green helmet from other games, especially the pic right next to last nights pic.

GAH! I saw that game, but was busy looking for pics of others games and just plum forgot to include them. I’m dumb… XP
When is the last time Oregon has repeated a uni combination? Just curious…
look at the chart, it says on there.
Black helmet, yellow jersey, black pants
In the same season, or period?
Never in the same season, again please take a look at the chart and all 3 duck tracker sites, they show it all in fine detail
UW is my treat to get me through the week. Since I only read it on Sunday afternoons I miss the chance to throw my thoughts in on a lot of the discussions but I’ll put a few out today.
#1 – I still hate the blue/white combo for the Padres but it would be a bit better to throw in some of the old “sand” or orange colors. I still cringe at the thought of other older color combos though.
#2 – I liked the Marlins look more than I thought I would but I don’t like the yellow on the “M”. Change that & it’s OK. Not a fan of “Miami” at home instead of “Marlins” either but hopefully that changes in a few seasons.
#3 – One of my biggest peeves is baseball teams with traditional lettering across the chest (like the new Marlins & Padres home/away) that skip the number on the front of the uniform. Need to have this on there or it looks terrible. Note the difference the year the Cards removed the number & see how much better it looks WITH the number.
#4 – I don’t like or hate the helmet the Irish wore against Maryland but like the older gold better than the shiny new gold. I did like the facemask not being gray though. Another one of my biggest peeves is teams wearing gray facemasks that don’t have gray in their colors. It’s not 1965 anymore. Lose the gray! Look at how much nicer Navy looks with the blue facemask! And really? Green jerseys for Maryland? Of all the teams? Maryland?
#5 – I may be biased in this one but my Pittsburgh Panthers looked terrible. Gold pants with the blue jersey at home and white jerseys with the blue pants on the road! Burn those white pants!!!
OK I’m done, I’ll shut up now & sit back down so I may be laughed at for my opinions… Go ahead, laugh. I’m OK with that…
I know what you mean about the Panthers’ white pants. Just doesn’t look right.
“Green jerseys for Maryland? Of all the teams? Maryland?”
~~~
what?
I think he’s referring to Notre Dame choosing to wear they’re green jerseys against Maryland, and not a better team.
I know Phil is enamored of SMU and all their stripes, but I watched the game and with the stretchy sleeves, the stripes were waving up and down all over the place. They should get points off for that.
Yeah, Phil…
jeebus
i realize sometimes people confuse me with paul…
but now they’re confusing me with you?
it’s movi who loves the stangs, not me (although i do like them)
Late to the site today, but I love that Texas A&M and K-State topped Jim’s list. Quite unusual that neither team wears red, blue, black or gold. And yes, the contrast was great.
Re: Stanford Drum Pac-10 logo: If you knew anything about Stanford’s band, this should be no surprise! Remember their main claim to fame is being trampled by a Cal player, it’s a wonder they didn’t have “Pac-8” on their gear just to spite people…
Niners stomping the Giants finally. That is all.
Giants stink.
Nice pic, Phil. ;)
you’re a lucky man, jason…don’t you ever forget that!
Bobby Petrino (Arkansas) was wearing a jacket very similar to that of Beamer link
both schools are sponsored by NIKE
Technically speaking, VaTech is not a Technical Institute. The proper name of the school is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. While they may be a technical institute, they are not a Technical Institute. As such, I suggest everyone start calling them VaPISU.
Right. I forgot about that. I’m horrible at research…
We (Georgia Tech fans) have always called them Vippy-sue (VPISU)
There is no rhyme or reason to the Jets uniform choices. Wearing all white at home, at night.
Just for the record:
Green jerseys: 4-0.
Blue Titans throwback jerseys: 1-0.
White jerseys: 0-3.
Make it 0-4 after what’s already shaping up to be a disaster.
My opinions on the Oregon helmet:
First of all, Oregon has been wearing a gradient green helmet for a long time. They haven’t had just plain green (no gradient) in a long time.
In my opinion, although I’m still not certain, Oregon wore a new helmet. Their usual helmet is more of a green/yellow/purple like someone mentioned above. It seemed their helmet they wore last night was a green/black gradient with a white (or grey/silver?) logo.
The only explanation I can think of it looking so much different if it isn’t in fact a new is the white logo. Maybe it’s tricking our eyes. I still feel it’s a new helmet though.
Same shell different logo color. Not only are there pictures that show that its nothing new (aside from the O not being yellow), but when has Oregon introduced a new shell and not talked about it?
If they did something new with the shell we would have heard about it, like we do every time Oregon introduces something new (except for logo colors).
they wore the “Mallard” helmets w/ a silver carbon fiber O.
I noticed that there’s a lot of confusion between the standard green and the Mallard helmets.
The standard green does have a gradient, however it is because of the use of a gold candy clearcoat over the dark metallic paint. Some version of it also have a ghost flames. If you put this helmet under the same amount of light all around it will look green. This green/gold gradient helmet was worn through the ‘Diamond plate era’.
The Mallard helmet effect is green/purple/gold. The concept is to mimic an actual mallard ducks head. DuPont Chomalusion paint is used for this. If you put this helmet under the same amount of light all around it, it will look either purple or green or gold depending on the angle you’re looking at it from not the amout of light that’s hitting it. This is because the actual pigment used for the paint have all three colors (like the green in a hundred dollar bill).
So to speak, Oregon have these helmets.
Standard Green
Mallard
White
Combat Black
Carbon Fiber
Winning Gold
