Snowday Morning Uni Watch

Fordham Army Football

By Phil Hecken, with Terry Duroncelet

Much of the northeast was blanketed by a snowstorm yesterday and last night, and a lot of areas got walloped — bad for most of us, but it sure does make for some sloppy purdy football. Taking center stage once again is my buddy, Terry Duroncelet, who’ll take us through the highs, lows and snows of all the college football game for week nine of the season… Also, there’s a really great “Colorize This!” following the jump — be sure to check that out as well. But first, here’s Terry:

~~~
We kick things off with some pre-Halloween snow games for you. The first one was between Penn State and Illinois (although it was just some tame dandruff throughout the game). Penn State’s offense was about as cold as the weather, but they managed to pull out a victory by way of the Illinois kicker’s missed field goal. Now Joe Pa’s wins as a D-1 head coach matches his age. No, but I’m very happy that Mr. Paterno reached this huge milestone in college football history. The second one was between Army and Fordham, by far the snowiest FBS game of the weekend. Like… REALLY snowy. The third one was between West Virginia and Rutgers, where the Scarlet Ebony Knights were playing on an ivory field. There was also some of the white stuff in the games involving Harvard/Dartmouth and Yale/Columbia (the snowiest non-FBS game). Credit Phil for those Ivy League pics.
• Nothing extraordinary on a rare Wednesday game featuring Pitt and UConn, but what was the huge “3” pin on the Pitt coach’s jacket for?
• On Friday, TCU wore mono-black, and I’d like to know what each individual award-decal is for on the BYU helmets. There’s three in all: clear ones with blue cougars, blue ones with white cougars, and clear ones with gold cougars. Anybody know?
• There are no words to describe how stupid these BFBS Kentucky uniforms are. I seriously have no words. You get no words, Wildcats. In words, I’m saying you get no words. More info here. Also in that game, Miss. State wore the matte helmets, and the Bulldogs coach was looking pretty damn cool, even with the MOTB.
Several of the Michigan players look to have been wearing the old-model uniform from top to bottom, although there are some Wolverine players that prefer the bodysuits (also note the pink). Hmm… first Tennessee from last week, now Michigan this week? *crosses fingers and hopes that UCLA is next* On another note, what was going through this Wolverines — err, Spartans *ahem*… Michigan-based B1G college football fan’s head when he wore this? (photo from Tarrell Holven)
Virginia Tech went with maroon lids, white jerseys, and orange pants. An amazing Autumn look that makes me crave for candy corn (and makes them crave for pumpkin carvings). Throw in Duke wearing my #1 favorite color, and this is a sweet matchup. This has to be Jim Vilk’s #1 in the 5&1.
Oklahoma State *FINALLY* broke out the orange jerseys for their Homecoming game against Baylor.
• One of the Mizzou players had a minor helmet stripe issue. Look at the black stripe part that covers the “I” on “MISSOURI”. Is the black part of the stripe some kind of translucent black? You’d think that part would be clear. Credit reader EricBinKC for that one.
• The Notre Dame Midshipmen put a whoopin’ on the Navy Fighting Irish. Man, even when they’re scuffed up, those new Golden Domes look great!
• Boston College wore crimson pants against Maryland. Photo gallery here. In addition, this guy’s helmet stripe was coming off. The last two photos credited to Matty Eggen. Also of note is that Maryland wore black helmets and jerseys with red pants.
• Did Texas Tech and the Terps call each other earlier in the week to talk about coordinating their uniforms?
Ole Miss broke out the Rebel greys from last year against Auburn.
• Although Tennessee wore the white non-super-stretchies last week against Alabama, they kept the yellow-orange bodysuit jerseys at home against South Carolina Yesterday.
• Ohio State wore their Nike Pro Combat uniforms last night against Wisconsin. I really like the helmet and the jersey, but that stinkin’ scarlet wraparound junk on the pants ruined an otherwise great AmPac suit. *sigh* it’s 2009 all over again…
• Nothing uni-notable about the USC/Stanford game, but there was a spell check in this Facebook post from Nike Football. I hope they don’t do this in the NFL next year for the Arizona Cardinal.
Washington went BFBS yesterday against Arizona.
• Cal wore the white helmets from the Oregon game against UCLA.
Arizona State was doin’ the Steeler thing against Colorado.
~~~

Tremendous job, as always, Terry.

colorize this

Colorize This!

Occasionally, I will be featuring wonderful, high-quality black and white photographs that are just begging to be colorized.

After a few weeks of the G&G show (which is always appreciated), we have a couple of additional submitters today, I’m very pleased to say. It’s great that more of you are attempting this great (albeit time consuming) addition to the historical record.

First up is our old standby, George Chilvers:

Hi Phil

Today’s (Sunday’s) posts discussed Notre Dame gold, and LarryB was asking for more football colourisation (your sort of football, not the rest of the World’s!).

So here you go – Don Miller, one of the Four Horsemen (see, we’re not all ignorant over here!!) in a picture dated back to 1928.

(Original)

Sorry if someone thinks the gold isn’t quite the right tone – you prove to me that it was different in 1928 :)

There is however an expression we use here in the North of England – not sure what your equivalent is – but we would say “will you just look at the state of that jersey?”. Did his Mum really let him go out with that – never mind be photographed for an iconic image! She will have been so embarassed.

George

Thanks G. But of course, our man from across the pond wasn’t done, so he sent me another college, er…pro football colorization (it’s Jim Thorpe with the Canton Bulldogs):

Hi Phil

Another iconic football picture – with not a trace of gold :)

George

Stupendous, as always, George!

~~~
Next up is another nice set from Jared Wieseler, who has submitted before:
Hey Phil,
This is only my second submission to you and it has been a while since the first but here are a few more. I was checking out the Minnesota football gameday website a while back and ended up in the image archives showing pics of the team from a long time ago.
The first is likely not as interesting as the other two. It is a picture of Memorial Stadium in its original configuration after completion. The Gophers played here from 1924 until the Metrodome opened in 1982. It was then demolished in 1992. They still have one of the entrance gates in the McNamara Center which I got to see for the first time while visiting for the Husker v Gopher game this weekend. It was really cool to be able to tie it all together by seeing it in person.
The second is a great shot of Sandy Stephens intercepting a pass versus the badgers. I don’t remember the exact date but I believe it is from the 1930s.
The last is a shot of the legendary Bud Grant from the late 1940s. I wasn’t sure exactly which colors to use for which part of the uniform, so I threw a guess out there. If anyone knows the correct color combo, let me know and I can correct the look.
I have a few others to work on and will submit them in due time.
Enjoy!
Jared Wieseler
Wonderful stuff, Jared. Keep ’em coming and glad to have you back!!!
~~~

Next up is Matt De Giulio, who took an interesting tack and also colored a photo that Gary Chanko had taken on last week:

Phil

How does the attached stack up for the Old Steegles photo colorization. I interpreted it as a very brutal, harsh, and gritty photo, and I tried to do it justice in that aspect.

Matt

Thanks Matt. For comparison, this was Gary’s version. I always like seeing different techniques and interpretations. Good stuff.

~~~
Next up is the Steagles colorizer himself, Gary Chanko, who also took on something suggested by another reader:
Decided to try the panorama photo challenge submitted by BSmile last week. Fortunately the original quality was reasonable and the coloring task was a bit easier but still highly tedious.
Like most of these projects there are always a few discoveries and items of interest:
• The player numbers range between the teens and forties. I think it wasn’t until the Fifties when the NFL implemented rules resulting in position numbers in the 50s and above. More knowledgable readers will know the specifics on uniform number rules for this era.
• The coach on the far right, Ray Flaherty, is being budget minded as he looks to be wearing an old Boston Redskins cap.
• The mascot dog is an unusual addition to the team photo. What was this dog’s name?
• The shadows cast by the players seem odd. Beginning with player no.37 and continuing to the right all the shadows fall to the right and behind. But for the first five individuals from the left, shadows fall to the front. Maybe this is how it should be for the positioning and time of day, but it somehow doesn’t look correct.
• The photo original is signed by each player, including the college they attended. The penmanship is incredibly legible. Of course cursive writing was a basic skill taught in school 75+ years ago. Today I’m not sure that is the case.
The final image should make a nice large print, say about 4X12 inches and perhaps larger. The left side of the original image (the first 4-5 players) is a bit blurred, but shouldn’t be that noticeable when printed.
Gary
Fantastic job, Gary, as always.
~~~

And we close down with another colorizer who shouldn’t be a stranger, the one and only Larry Bodnovich, whose inspiration comes from Life:

Phil,

I colorized this picture from Life archives. You can guess why I gave the kids unis those colors.

Larry

Beautiful job, Lawrence. Nice having you back as well.

~~~
Wow. Fantastic job everyone. Lets have a big round of Interwebs applause for all this week’s submitters! Keep them coming, peeps.
all sport uni tweaks
Uni Tweaks
We have another new set of tweaks today.
If you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.
Remember, if possible, try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per tweak. You guys have been great at keeping to that, and it’s much appreciated!
And so, lets begin:
~~~

We start with Austin Fischer who has some NHL concepts:

Hi, I made a Jets third jersey, and a major fix to my Penguins pathetic uni set.

~~~
Next up is Gregory Kohn, who you might remember had created some Marlins caps a while back — well, he’s back, with some uni concepts:
More Miami Marlins tweeks,
I stuck to the new rainbow color scheme and the leaked logo, but I tried to make the uniforms somewhat classy and not too modern, which was no small task. I also worked in the logo for the old International League Miami Marlins, which I really hope they try to add in somewhere.
We’ll see on 11/11/11.
~~~

And closing down the show today is Ian Fain, whose father, Curt, sent in three of the cutest submissions ever from his nine-year-old son. Jim Vilk is sure to have a tear brought to his eye…

My 9 year old son Ian and I both love your site! Attached are his football uniform tweaks for University of Tulsa, Wisconsin and Oregon State.

Thanks!

Duck Tracker Header

2011 Duck Tracker

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Jake Hurley has stepped up to the plate and taken over the “Duck Tracker” for 2011. What is the Duck Tracker? Quite simply, it tracks each and every uniform combination the Ducks have worn for the 2011 season. He steps in for former tracker Mike Princip, whose non-Uni Watch activities will preclude him from tracking for 2011.

After a couple week hiatus, Jake has promised to keep up with the Duck Tracker for the remainder of the year. If any of you fine readers have feedback on this project, or is interested in adding content (such as history, uniform history, tweaks or mock-ups), Jake will gladly add it to the site. Shoot me an E-mail.

Here’s the 2011 Duck Tracker currently — Jake would like to make the project a bit more informational, like Mike did with it the past two years.

Thanks!

5 & 1

Jim Vilk’s 5 & 1

And now for the part of the post that I wait up all night for you’ve all been waiting for…

And last night was particularly late…so will we get a winner list…or a dud?

~~~
Terp Tracker – Again with the black?
Honorable Mentions to Fordham/Army/SNOW! — OK, some of you may need a closeup, but it still looks good.
And to Northwestern/Indiana — A heavy snow wouldn’t help this matchup, but a light dusting might.
5. Georgia/Florida — The SEC can thank Rutgers’ BFBS for getting them into the Top 5 this week.
4. Oklahoma/Kansas State — If they played in Norman, this game would have flip-flopped with…
3. Va Tech/Duke — The Hokies keep coming up with great combos, don’t they?
2. Purdue/Michigan — Classic, baby.
1. Tulane/East Carolina — These colors really pop on an overcast day.
And the bad one: Arizona/Washington — I considered Navy/Notre Dame for looking too similar, but the Wildcats’ font and the Huskies’ BFBS changed that.
~~~

You barely avoided the dreaded Bush finger, Jim. Shoulda had 4 snow games and Duck U tho…

~~~~~~~~~~
And with that, it’s a wrap. Everyone have a great Sunday. Catch you next weekend.
“That B1G logo is visual ipecac. It’s not that it is terribly ugly, it is just so mentally jarring. When I see the logo I don’t comprehend it and move on. My mind stops, tries to unravel the confusion, and I can’t get past ‘what were they thinking’.” — Phillip Wilson
    I still think tOSU’s gray was too dark. On TV they looked more like the Buc(k)s of Tampa Bay than the Bucks of Ohio State.
    I actually like that shade of grey for the Buckeyes. A lot better than the silver that they normally use. But I agree that the lighting (being a night game and all) kinda deepened that tone of grey a bit…
    Kinda like the lighting in my room made my hat (and shirt) link. I took that just minutes after the Cardinals won the World Series. And no, I don’t wear link.
    And I’ll take the Tulane/ECU game as a great alternative for the top spot in the 5&1, simply because I love Tulane’s colors. That VT/Duke game was pretty sweet, though…
    Do I spot an old-school England shirt?
    Been thinking about snagging last year’s away kit. Even as an American, it’s too good looking to pass up.
    You know…I briefly toyed with VT/Duke being #1, but the more I see Duke, one little thing bothers me – that black outline on the helmet stripe. It’s the only black on the whole uni and it needs to go.
    As for VT, no complaints whatsoever. GREAT contrast.
    Aw, crap…there is no black outline.
    link
    There used to be, right? From the little pics I usually see, I could have sworn it was still there.
    Is it too late to change my picks??
    I agree that the shade of Gray was a bit dark, but if I could change anything it would have been to match the Gray on the helmey with whatever shade of Gray appeared on the uniform. The Buckeyes, to my memory, have never worn Silver helmets, particularly that next-to-Chrome shade Nike had them in this week. The Oversized Gray collars were a bit much also.
    Gary mentioned the shadows in the Redskins’ photo looking odd.
    My brother is a professional photographer, and he used to do a lot of panoramis (mainly architectural). This picture will have been taken with the players standing in an arc, and the camera will then have panned around to take the picture. Hence the shadows altering. Simple!
    By the way, kudos to Gary for doing this one – I have started it, but if anyone doesn’t realise what a big job it is then they ought to try it.
    On which subject it is also great to see more high-quality submissions from others. Keep it up folks!
    Phil could just as easily be making an assumption upon others, rather than referring to himself.
    Also… there was a comment yesterday about how I couldn’t really complain about the Buckeyes gray facemasks because gray is a team color… and I got to thinking… (shut up Phil)
    Just how strictly can/should we define team colors? In the case of OSU, scarlet is rather specific color, but gray can be any shade between black & white. Should the Buckeyes gray be limited to a fairly small range (to account for material differences) or should they be allowed to wear any gray under the sun and still call it a “team color”? The Blue Devils of Duke shouldn’t wear black for obvious reasons… but what about powder blue or navy blue? Are those also wrong, or acceptable?
    1. Catalog consistency
    2. Internal consistency
    Colors should be limited by catalog similarity. I don’t know whether a casual fan can tell the difference on the field between Scarlet and Cardinal. They both look red to me at first glance and would probably need a home OSU jersey next to a home Wisconsin jersey to tell the difference (if there really is one).
    Additionally, no more mismatches between helmet and jersey. (see Vikings, Cowboys, Irish) If they can’t even figure out their own team colors, then it just looks bad.
    Gray is not white is not black. Blue (Duke Blue) is not powder blue (Carolina Blue) is not navy blue. I’d rather not watch an ACC game with Duke and UNC wearing the same shade of blue. (I will however watch a B1G game between Wisconsin and Nebraska…)
    I’ll try this again as I posted it and it says “awaiting moderation” ? So – sorry if this ends up a double post:
    Thanks George for solving the puzzle. Yes, of course, the players had to arranged in an arc to achieve the “flat” panoramic image. Digital imaging software was still a few years away! It would be interesting to see the photo gear used for this shoot.
    Nice to see all the colorized submittals this week; super job. But Matt, did you know those Steagles uni socks could have been yellow? …. more to follow on his.
    Great job on the colorizing efforts this week everyone!
    Special shout out to Gary for taking on the 1937 Redskins Panoramic. That certainly took some time…and it came out fantastic!
    Cheers! ~B
    Not bad at all…
    Though, it’s interesting that you went with straight stripes for the Jets (for a team wearing contoured stripes, at least at the waistline), but went with contoured stripes for the Pens.
    what i want to know is did the lone ranger hook up with the female waldo, the witch, raggedy ann…or the texas chainsaw chick
    Can’t find it online, however they mentioned in the telecast that Todd Graham(Pitt coach) was wearing the large button to remember 3 former players he coached while at Tulsa.
    He had 3 of his former Tulsa players pass away within an 8 month period, so he wears the button to let everyone back in Tulsa know he’s thinking about them.
    I just love Uniwatch on Sundays during the college football season.
    What a pleasant surprise to see the great football colorizations too. Nice job to all.George, Jared, Matt and Gary.
    My observations and opinions about college football unis this weekend:
    1. I loved Ohio State’s Pro Combat uniforms….the colors, the style. This uniform is more interesting and better looking than Ohio State’s standard uniform…an example of a modern uniform design working within the concept of a throwback look. I love the lack of TV numbers on college uniforms and the shoulder stripes may be the answer to the problems with UCLA stripes and sleeve stripes (where there is hardly any sleeve) that some teams have.
    link
    2. Speaking of sleeve stripes, aren’t Nebraska’s lovely? I love how each stripe varies in width along its entire length due to stretching. Wait…aren’t these made by Addidas? The same manufacturer who makes those lovely UCLA jerseys with the bandaids on the shoulders?
    link
    3. Wisconsin has the same problem LSU does with its helmet stripes not matching their uniforms…they’re darker than the stripes on the rest of the uniform. If they want their “W” logo to stand out on TV then make it a darker red…but leave the stripes the same color red as the rest of the uniform. What’s funny is their facemasks are the lighter red just like the rest of the uniform. Make the helmet stripes match the facemask and the stripes on the uniform…period.
    link
    Funny but last night I was thinking about the dark red W and wondering why it is that shade. Even though I have seen the Badger helmet over and over.
    Apparently a designer once told teams that their helmet logos needed to be bigger and more contrasty in order to show up better on TV…so that someone casually walking through a room in which a TV was televising the game could immediately identify their team. Okay…but if your helmet also has stripes, shouldn’t the stipes match the rest of the uniform?
    LSU and Wisconsin aren’t the only teams, either. You can find this even in the NFL. Look at the Dallas Cowboys, for example…although their helmet stripes do match their navy jerseys that they wear once every few years.
    The Cowboys are a bad example because they’re a freakin mess anyway.
    A better example would be the Packers or Jets, who both have darker green on their helmets than anywhere else.
    In any case, it’s a really dumb thing that really needs to be fixed now that we’re in the HDTV era.
    A Couple of Suggestions to Improve the General Overall State of Modern NCAA Football Uniforms ….
    1. Simply do not allow Adidas to manufacture football jerseys. No more. The skin tight jerseys, the mini TV numerals, the lower chest wordmarks causing Numerals to be centered at the players’ belly buttons. The lack of sleeves even on QB’s with shoulder pads sticking out. Enough already. Your company has eliminated itself.
    2. No more mid-sized wordmarks. Either have a readable size team name (see “Sooners” at Oklahoma) or have a small logo (see early 2000’s “SEC” logo, or the useless “NFL Equipment”, etc.) These mid-sized logos are not readable from the stands or from TV, and simply clutter the jersey and lower the frony numerals. UIseless.
    3. If a team insists upon Vegas Gold as a jersey or numeral color, they MUST use thicker dark secondary colors for the trim when contrasting the White numeral or jersey. The biggest violator is UCF, but it gor so bad that Georgia Tech ad to purchase new jerseys this tear when the numerals proved unreadable.
    Better yet, Why not simply switch to Old Gold? Imagine how much better UCF or Georgia Tech would look if they wore White and Old Gold with the Black/Navy trim. Ah, that would get it right.
    4. No more front numerals starting mid-chest and ridiculously centered at the players’ belly buttons. Again, UCF is the worst, but every Saturday their are too many jerseys styled this way to count. These new jersey collar cuts, the numerous logos and wordmarks and conference logos and manufacterers’ logos and memorials and anniversaries and everything else including notices that the new Caddilacs are coming out – there are are just too frikkin much of this mess. It’s a pretty simple solution. Look at a picture and copy the way the fronts of football jerseys looked from about 1935-1999. Copy and wear accordingly.
    5. Finally, maybe everbody doesn’t need to wear TV numerals. With the shorter sleeves and better TV camera angles and coverage, maybe everybody no longer needs them. I could watch a game without them. Maybe UCLA is onto something this year. Maybe Paul Brown’s 1969 Bengals knew something 40 years before everybody else. Maybe Alabama knew it all along (yeah, I know, they had TV numerals in the 1960’s, nonetheless, relatively speaking they knew all along).
    I could add more, but these five steps would end about 97% of my Football Uniform complaints.
    Love the U of MN colorizations by Jared, but just a minor thing…Sandy Stephens was at the U during the early 1960s, not the 30s…(which could have been a typo considering how close the 3 and 6 are on the number pad)
    I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of Bud Grant where he DIDN’T look intense.
    Oh, and you folks in the NE with your cute little Halloween snowstorm… link This is how you have a real Halloween snowstorm party…37 inches and 60 mph…and we STILL had trick or treaters. LOL.
    Yep, Eric, you’re right about the 1960s origin of that Gopher-Badger tussle photo. Plastic helmets, facemasks, etc.
    I will let slide your patronizing remarks about “the NE.” There is no such thing, anyway. There is New England, which needs no instructions on bad weather, thank you very much, and then there are the Middle Atlantic States, where social conversations demand meteorological outrage as a point of departure. Just because we lump Minnesota in with Oklahoma doesn’t mean you get to return the favor.
    As to Bud Grant, puh…leeze. Super Bowl IV sums it up.
    And now that I’m a little snitty run, George Chilvers, you may have rendered Don Miller into an Apollonian fabulousness (superb work, really), but that gives no license for your north-of-England-we-may-be-poor-but-we-dress-proper-like guff. To quote the immortal Iverson, “we’re talking about practice here,” and at practice, in a working-class immigrant school nowhere close to any mother, holes and tatters in a football jersey were the equivalent of dueling scars for university Germans.
    that’s cuz minnesota and oklahoma are in the same state
    /pfft…flyover country
    Funny stuff, Phil.
    If I didn’t better, I’d tar you with the same overly self-important, overrated New Yorker brush…but you have proven that you have far more depth than that. :)
    Not much more, but considering that most New Yorkers can’t figure out anything west of, say, Pittsburgh, the fact hat you even knew we shared the same country means that you have potential.
    Ah, but I kid the people of the mid-Atlantic states who can’t figure out which side of the plow goes toward the snow. :)
    Jared, much of colorizing is educated guessing. I had done some old Minnesota Gophers before and wondered if I had the colors right. Maybe your colors are reversed on the pants. But just my guess.
    Apparently Nebraska didn’t get that memo about the helmet decals then bc I strain to see which red/white team they are every time they come on..
    I think Nebraska should have a giant, yellow ear of corn as their logo on each side of their helmets…a fierce, angry-looking ear of corn! That way you could identify them more easily on TV. ;>)
    Think of the possibilities for the “Fighting Cornhuskers”. Picture a farmer in a deathmatch struggle with a growling, bad-ass ear of corn. Nebraska just needs to be more creative in designing a new helmet log…so long as they make it BIG and darker than the rest of their uniform. ;>)
    Come on, Jim–no love at ALL for Stanford-USC? I’m not a fan of either team, but I can appreciate a gorgeous classic matchup like that one. It was a terrific game made better by the sartorial choices of the participants.
    Oh, I had some love for Stanford/USC in more ways than one. They almost beat out Fordham/Army for Honorable Mention, but I’m a sucker for a snow game with good unis.
    Fair enough. I thought it was one of the 5 best of the day, but you’re right–a snow game does change things a bit.
    Kyle, modern jerseys often have their multiple panels fabricated from different fabrics…one to breathe better, one to wick away sweat better, one to make you taller, who knows?
    I think sometimes specific jersey panels look darker simply because they have absorbed more sweat…just a guess.
    A good example of helmet designs (stripes and logos) being altered so they can be seen from a distance was the Houston Oilers…Royal blue striping and logos, even though the team color was Columbia blue.
    Re: BYU helmet stickers:
    clear w/ gold: for academic accomplishments/community service
    clear w/ blue: for offense/defense/special teams reaching a team goal
    The blue w/ white was first introduced last year. I’m not clear on what its meaning is, though it might be the team collectively reaching a goal (as opposed to the offense or defense reaching a team goal). As I understand it, there are no decals given for individual accomplishments on the field.
    I’m watching the games at a BW3 and the projector they have the Panthers—Vikings game on has the white up too high. The Panthers look better in their blue alternates anyway, but when it’s washed out that uniform looks so much better than anything else they wear. Light blue is better than electric blue and definitely better than black.
    Addendum: Those uniforms do look bad with solid black socks. They need to have at least a significant amount of blue on the socks to tie it all together.
    Lots of snow at the Princeton/Cornell football game.
    Good photos here: link
    Princeton is on Fall Break and our football team is awful, so unfortunately very few fans and even fewer students braved the weather to come out to the game.
    No pics (I don’t have a DVR), but it looks like the Jacksonville offensive linemen are wearing jerseys with different mesh fabrics from one player to the next. I’ll try to post something once there are some game pics online.
    Sadly the Vikings are back to their crappy duds. Those alts should be done in the away white too. Just for sake of comparison could Tim E’Obrien do a tweak for me since I don’t know how? I love that old school dark dark purple in those alts. Could you switch the taffy purple out and put the dark in on the current road white? Dark purple on the helmet too. That’s the key as far as I’m concerned. Everything else can stay as far as the side panels and etc. go. Even though that current design stinks. Just give me the “real” purple. Sorry Paul. I know….purple is icky.
    Good snow game at the D3 level, Juniata Eagles at McDaniel (MD) Green Terror. Full slide show here: link
    Close up picture at the top of this article: link
    Ehh, disappointed that my tweaks didn’t make it in this weekend, but I’ll live… of course, if they get posted next weekend, I won’t know until late Sunday, since I’ll be gone all weekend, sans internet – not all of us have the coin to throw around on “smart” devices (or are fortunate enough to work for a company willing to provide them)!
    you submitted your tweaks on wednesday — i’m just getting to tweaks from mid-october…so the chances you’ll make it into next weekend are fairly slim
    Guess it’s quite a backup, eh?
    That’s cool. Hell, I submitted some concepts over to Chris at Icethetics, and they didn’t get posted for over a year! Came as a shock when he did post them…
    Hey everyone, a little message regarding the Duck Tracker.
    I am totally serious about people submitting content. Concepts, historical info, fun facts, hell even old colorized photos, anything! I know that Mike’s sites from the past 2 years were packed full of stuff like that. The goal is to carry on the project and make it as interesting as possible.
    Any Ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    More Pink
    While attending the University of Kentucky / University of Florida women’s volleyball tilt, the UofFla are wearing pink shoelaces. UK is not.
    And no black to be seen after yesterday’s BFBS football game.
    what gorgeous-looking team is that playing in the edward jones dome and what have they done with the rams?
    Skins going White jersey over Gold pants today in the great white north as well.
    (and maybe the rams will stick with these unis in the future if they start winning)
    Are referring to the bad hair coloring job or another apparent intoxication situation. There’s almost nothing flattering about this lying, PED enabling weasel.
    I’m sure this has been asked before, so I’m sorry for asking: Where can I find the template being used for the duck tracker? I want to use that instead of the pro-combat one I’ve been playing that but I haven’t had any luck.
    Thanks in advance.
    To be completely honest with you I am not sure where I got it, I have had it in my files for years. My best guess is that I got it on Chris Creamer’s Forum from a member there that made it, I couldn’t tell you who though. I could do some searching for you.
    But if that doesn’t yield any results I would be happy to upload my version somewhere. The original template had two different uni sets (home and road) along with several different jersey cut options (different stitching and whatnot). The version that I edited and use today is only one jersey cut (pro combat) and one jersey set. But if you are interested in that one let me know and I’ll see what I can do. By the way it is a .psd file.
    The selection of Arizona/Washington as the worst is really disappointing. I get that UW’s BFBS looks terrible, but the game should get some points for Arizona’s classic look. W/W/B is traditional for my Cats.
    On another subject, thank you so much for that first tweak. I’ve been looking for that template for the longest time!
    Actually, the only thing about Arizona that bugs me is the number font. But, it’s my 2nd-least-favorite font, and when you pair that with full-on BFBS, you have a good case for making it to the &1.
    I really wanted Wazzu/Oregon to go there, so I feel you’re pain. The Cougars just weren’t bad enough to justify it, though.
    Isn’t the fact that it was the Mildcats enough to make it the &1 game! Sorry, ASU alum here.
    Is W/W/B really traditional for UofA? Over the year (not just the recent multi-look nonsense), haven’t the Cats worn every combination or red, white and blue at one point or another, with mono-white being their most common look on the road?
    Back in the Tomey days when we only had white helmets, Arizona’s only two combinations were W/B/W at home and W/W/B on the road. Arizona needs to stick to that system. It’s classic and it looks damn good. However, it can also include the red jerseys and pants as long as they’re used the same way. That means no blue helmet, red or blue jersey at home/white jersey on the road and white pants at home/red or blue pants on the road. No more of this B/R/B nonsense and no more stormtrooper (a look that should have been shelved permanently after the Holiday Bowl debacle).
    AD Greg Byrne visited the Nike facilities last year and I swear to God, if we end up getting some stupid rebrand like Tempe Normal or Wazzu and we march onto the field wearing black or gray, I’m gonna puke. We have a solid identity that doesn’t need changing.
    I guess I go back a bit further (but not to the days of Tempe Normal or ASC). Prior to Tomey, Larry Smith had them in mono-white. link (I believe this is from the 1985 game)
    I wouldn’t expect a major re-branding. You’re right, your teams alreading have a strong brand which is used consistently throughout the athletic department. Now here is a scenario for you – what would you say if the Cats get further nikefied, but FINALLY get to play someone other than UCLA in Pasadena? Sorry, the Devil made me do that, but hey, at least you guys aren’t the only team in the conference not to make it to the Rose Bowl yet. :-)
    I LOVE seeing Army (and Fordham) getting recognition. However, no love for Albany @ Wagner? Army, Columbia, Yale and Rutgers weren’t the only teams to play home games in the New York area this Saturday.
    No less snowy than Columbia.
    Just got my first look at Redskins-Bills, and promptly fainted. Too bad they’re playing in that room in Toronto and not the Ralph…
    Y’know, every time I see yet another close-up of the super-stretchies, I die a little inside.
    Seriously hoping Nike brings some sanity back to NFL jerseys next year.
    Broncos wearing orange…here’s Tebow looking to complete one of the six passes he’s completed so far (out of 20 attempts).
    Snow covers a multitude of sins, but it would take a blizzard to make Cal U look better.
    IUP looks pretty good, though.
    MINNESOTA GOPHERS/MEMORIAL STADIUM
    There is/was a website dedicated to the memory of Minnesota’s Memorial Stadium, with LONG video of early football games, including some from the 1930’s. Sorry, I am unable to link to it, but it is a pretty cool website.
    I agree, that ECU/Tulane game looks nice! and to Ian – keep up the great work on your tweaks (same to the other tweakists as well)
