Grading the FBS Unis

Grading the FBS Unis

By Phil Hecken, with the Mothervilker

In order to understand Jim Vilk, especially as he relates to everyone’s favorite “5 & 1” (which returns for a third season tomorrow), you’ve got to get into his kitchen. And what better way to do that than to have him discuss the unis he’ll be grading. Large sums of money have been won and lost trying to predict the 5 & 1, since it’s about as consistent and predictable as the Oregon uniform rotation. So I brought him back to discuss some of the new unis we’ll be seeing (in some cases, at least once) this season. So, here’s Akron’s finest, JV:

Apparently, Professor Hecken and I haven’t had our tenure revoked. Here we are again, handing out grades for the college football season’s freshman class of uniforms. Unlike last year’s two-part extravaganza, we’re focusing on the new unis featured in Paul’s recent college football preview. We’ll list those schools (with last year’s grades in parentheses), then play Point-Counterpoint while we give out new grades. If a team only came out with a new Toy Combat costume or some other one-off uniform, we’ll grade it on its own merit (or lack thereof) and not compare it with the regulars. Decals, socks/shoes, palm-design gloves (don’t get me started on those), and proposed-but-not-announced unis will not be graded. Now, if there are no questions, let’s begin, shall we?

~~~
ACC
Boston College
JV (B- last year): Right off the bat, I get a shiny new apple on my desk! Better font and decent striping. Even without the cool stained glass look on the helmet stripes, this is a major upgrade. A-
PH (B last year): Clearly last year I graded them too high, because they’re improved…but they ain’t no B+ now. Better fonts, much better helmet striping now. Two too many pairs of pants, however. The golds would be just fine, TYVM. If the pants stripe matched the helmet, it’d be a B+. But they don’t…plus, I’m not a big fan of the stained glass design that you can’t see from more than one foot away. B
Florida State
JV (A-): Adding “FSU” to the jerseys neither detracts nor adds to my original grade. A-
PH (B+): That’s a “change”? Meh. I’d prefer less jersey clutter but still a B+
Georgia Tech
JV (B-): Given the option (get it?), I’d stick with last year’s look. C
PH (C+): Didn’t think they could get worse, but they did. I’d like more legible numbers and clearly Russell is trying to copy one of Swooshie’s worst jersey features, the collar horns. They had the chance to ditch them, but made them worse. C
Maryland
JV (C-): Last year, Phil and I were in agreement. This year, we aren’t. While it could use some tweaking, this is a fun look. C
PH (C-): Who says we aren’t in agreement? OH JEEBUS…that’s just…awful. Hey, UnderArmour, you’re not Nikegon. Stop trying to copy them. Imitation isn’t the sincerest form of flattery, it’s just lame. Even taking just a couple of these unis, and forgetting the 3,456 combos that are now possible, this is just waaaaay to bumperstickery. The turtle-shell helmet is kind of cool, and I actually like the bright gold, but this is just a train wreck. D
NC State
JV (A-): Lateral move. A-
PH (B+): Unlike FSU, here I actually like the addition of “STATE” to the jersey. Doesn’t change the grade, however. B+
VA Tech
JV (A): Adding orange pants *should* bump them up to an A+, but not until I see game photos. A
PH (B+): Adding orange pants *should* bump them down to a B-, but not until I see game photos. B
Big East
Louisville
JV (B): Much better, but until they realize cardinals don’t have teeth I can’t give them an A. B+
PH (B): The jersey is an improvement, no doubt. I’ll give them a half grade higher. B+
UConn
JV (B-): The only thing they had going for them was NNOB and their helmets. Now the helmets display their new grade. C
PH (C+): Unlike Mothersunbowlker, I don’t really mind the added NOB, although it’s not needed. OK, half a grade off for that. C
USF
JV (B): Nice lids. They make up for the font. B+
PH (B+): They still have great colors, and while I don’t like the collarbone horns, I realize they’re the BULLS. I guess that’s what they’re going for with that. No change IMHO with the new lid(s). B+
B1G “Ten”
Indiana
JV (B-): Boomer Hoosier? Gonna miss the helmet and shoulder stripes, but not those things on the sides. A-
PH (C): Hoosier Daddy! YES! Someone got it right. You say looking like Oklahoma is a bad thing? No, looking like Maryland is a bad thing. Best upgrade so far. B+
Michigan (only grading the one-off uniform)
JV: Who’s “M to the 16th power”? I don’t see him on the roster. Seriously, though, that’s a nice look. A
PH: This one is sweet, although I don’t see the need for a “one off.” If there’s one thing I like more than stripes, it’s tiled stripes, and this has that in spades. I’m NOT a fan of the visible stitching on the numbers and “M” but I get what three stripes is going for. Doesn’t quite make the coveted “A” but I’ll give it an A-
Nebraska
JV (A+): Two patches too many? Probably. One patch too many, for sure. A-
PH (A-): You know what bothers me more than the two patches? The mountain in the middle. Half grade reduction. B+
Penn State
JV (A++): Call me a rebel, but I’ll miss the trim. Then again, I still miss the old helmet numbers. A+
PH (A+): Call me a relic, call me what you will…say I’m old fashioned, say I’m over the hill. But the best uniform in college football just got better. A+ (I have no higher grade, but think of it as a 99 going to 100)
Purdue
JV (B+): Lateral move. B+
PH (C+): Did Kordell Stewart become the Boiler’s coach? STOP messing with the varsity block people! And the helmet stripe is a downgrade too. C-
Big “12”
Baylor
JV (C): There many two-clawed bears in Texas? Even with the silly stripes, it’s an improvement from last year’s mix&match mess. B
PH (C-): Baylor had a fantastic uniform. Nike has been ruining it ever since. D
Kansas
JV (A-): An improvement, but not enough to change the grade. A-
PH (B+): Bigger wordmark & chest logo? How about keep the bigger wordmark and ditch the logo? Half grade diminution. B
Oklahoma State
JV (C+): Guess I can’t call BFBS, since black is a school color. Actually a slight improvement from last year. B-
PH (C+): There can be only one Nikegon, and OSU aint it. I do love the gray uni, but there’s way too many unis and helmets now and too much crap on all of them. C
Texas Tech
JV (B): I could have lived with the font, but not when you add a tramp stamp, too. C-
PH (C-): Hey, maybe the tramp stamp will encourage the players to keep their shirts tucked in. On second thought, maybe it will encourage them to untuck more. Either way, this uni-set sucks. And it’s too bad, because they have great colors. No grade change, but there’s not much further they can go down. C-
Conference USA
Houston (only grading the throwback)
JV: Getting a real Phi Slama Jama vibe here. When’s hoops season? A+
PH: What’s with the shocker? Isn’t that like, ASU’s thing? Nice uni, but not a big fan of the RAL, throwback or not. B+
Marshall
JV (A): Lateral move. A
PH (A-): I liked it, a lot, before, but I’m not sure I like the trendy, larger “The Herd” font. Not enough to drop them down a half grade, tho. A-
Memphis
JV (B-): Any team that copies Miami’s eyebrows-over-the-numbers striping should also be considered for the SMU Penalty. Even worse than last year’s diamond-sided piping. C-
PH (C+): *Sigh* The state of college football uniform design is in the terlet. The latest trend of putting TNDPL (Team Name Down Pant Leg) is one of the worst diseases to infect the FBS teams. It may be the worst bumpersticker of all. C-
Southern Miss
JV (C+): That’s only the first of three new helmet designs. I like it, but… Incomplete
PH (C-): Sweet helmet! Matte black finish and numbers (at least on one side). But like MoVi says, incomplete.
Tulsa
JV (C): Helmet looks better. That wasn’t the problem, though. C
PH (D): I actually think the helmet looks worse. And yeah, that was the least of their problems. D-
UTEP
JV (C+): Um, no. Someone didn’t study over the summer. C-
PH (C-): GAH. As bad as the new uni is, it’s better than the old one. And that’s not saying much. C
Independent
Notre Dame (grading the one-off only)
JV: I think I like them, but it’s hard to tell from those pics. For now, A-
PH: Sweet. ND looks better with green numbers (and a green jersey instead of blue). Nice job! A-
MAC
Bowling Green
JV (B): Lateral move with the new helmets, but a major backslide with everything else. C-
PH (C+): Holy F*CK that’s bad. And shouldn’t a school with the word “green” in their name have some, ya know, GREEN on their uni? Major downgrade. C-
Buffalo
JV (C+): With the Sabres and Bills improving their looks, the Bulls figured someone had to look bad in Buffalo. C-
PH (B+): I thought we were grading FBS schools. What’s that? Buffalo is an FBS school? Yeesh. Pretty colors (although royal and black just don’t go well together) and those fonts are to die for (in a bad way). C+
Temple
JV (A++): Still one of the best unis. Ever. A++
PH (A): Wow. Didn’t think they could improve upon their A, but they did. All it took was replacing TEMPLE with that gorgeous logo. Well done! A+
Western Michigan
JV (B): Normally, I like a horsey helmet, but just give me the W. B
PH (B+): Either the W or the horsey. Not both, and not on top of one another. B
Mountain West
Boise State (just the Toy Combat costume)
JV: Say it with me, Phil: “Because The Jeff hates it…” B- PH: “…we like it.” B
PH: Not so fast there, Jimbo. That’s only one reason to like it. I think the stormtrooper look is pretty nice. If you need to know more, the fuller explanation is here. B
TCU
JV (C): I graded them too low last year. Even with the BFBS, they should have been a B-. This year’s font drops them back down, though. C
PH (C-): I graded them too low too. And I’ll agree with Señor Vilk — that font is shite. And STOP adding black. That purple is a great shade and it looks fine with just white. Shoulda given them a C last year. C-
Wyoming
JV (C): WYO WYO why did the brown jerseys remain unchanged? Make them like the others. B-
PH (D): Even forgetting the bumperstickers, that brown, gold & white was never put together well. They might have a decent combo or two now with the brown helmet. Wait. No they won’t. And how bad will that monochrome brown head to toe look? And why the hell would you put a brown decal on a brown helmet? Get the feces jokes ready. D
PAC 12
Arizona State
JV (A-): I graded them that high? But I didn’t like Sparky. BFBS drags down an otherwise improved look. A-
PH (B): And they needed an all black uni because??? I actually like the new helmet logo and compared to their previous piping, those shoulder tines actually make sense. Slight improvement but for the BFBS. Push. B
Colorado
JV (A): Matching the helmet to the pants will mean more to Phil than it does to me. Still a good move, though. A
PH (B): HOLY CRAP they got the golds to match!!! That’s like music to my OCD eyes. What? A-
Oregon (Toy Combat costume only)
JV: It’s the unchangeable equation in Vilkamatics: Bellotti Bold + BFBS = F. Stealth numbers? Fine. F-
PH: Oh Nikegon, you’ve done it again. Pass me another cup of kool-aid. No one does ninja like a duck. A
Utah
JV (B): I can appreciate the subtle topography feature, but not on the backside. C
PH (C): Is it just me or does UA make every progressive uniform worse than its predecessor? And I may be the only person on the planet who thinks the topography feature is incredibly stupid, especially since it won’t be visible from more than one foot away. C-
Washington State
JV (A-): Lose the alt uni and the prickly font and we’d be talking improvement. But we’re not. B-
PH (B): The gray pants are nice, and will look great with the red lid and jersey. Normally, I’d like the gray bucket, but it’s way too shiny — it needs to be matte like the pants. That gray over black? Uh, no. Overall a downgrade (although the red/red/gray is really nice). B-
SEC
Auburn
JV (A+): Points off for the tramp stamp. A-
PH (A): The ONE uniform I thought UA couldn’t downgrade just got downgraded with the stamp of tramp. Dammit…I love(d) this uni. A-
Georgia (Toy Combat costume only)
JV: Even if I was a Georgia fan, I’d like it. The facemask and the collar are the only downers, and they’re not that bad. B+
PH: Even if I were a Bulldog fan, I’d hate it. Too much red, stupid face mask treatment. I already gave this a C in last weekend’s post, so it keeps that grade now. C
Kentucky
JV (B-): Oooooooo! Aaaaaaaah! Oops, what’s that peeking out from under that blue jersey? Still… A
PH (B): I like that checkerboard pattern on the blue top, but I don’t like the epaulette effect on the white jersey. They can fix that, right? Still a B
Mississippi State
JV (B+): Here’s your college word of the day to describe the change: infinitesimal. B+
PH (B): They added collar trim and moved the mountain from the right chest to the collar. Which is a total look at me move. Which I hate. Which moves them down to a B-
South Carolina
JV (B-): A mild upgrade. B
PH (B-): If their colors weren’t garnet and black, I’d dislike this even more. Once again, UA tweaks a bad design and makes it worse. C+
Sun Belt
Arkansas State
JV (C-): Looks like an improvement, but show me game photos. A tentative B-
PH (C-): Another adidas team to have the mountain moved to the collar. However, they ditched the crap on the sleeves, so that’s a plus. Black numbers outlined in white, instead of white numbers outlined in black and red. Winner. I kinda liked the black hat/red jersey/black pants tho. Now it seems it may just be mono red. Still, a nice improvement overall. B
Florida International
JV (D+): That “old” pic was too kind. For a team that also wore this, the plain unis are an upgrade. C+
PH (D-): Those helmets are black, right? And now they go from a blue top with white pants, to mono blue? They finally get rid of the crap on their uni but they better have white pants as an option. And fix the color of the helmet (even if it’s not black, it doesn’t match the blue). D-
Louisiana-Lafayette
JV (B+): A prickly font, yes, but it’s almost canceled out by this. J’adore les fleurs de lis! B+
PH (B): Still doesn’t look very good. And if the fleurs de lis’s were visible from more than 2 feet away, I might like them as a design feature. As it is, it just looks like a gradient. B-
Troy
JV (B-): What’s worse than a “TroJanS” logo? An even bigger “TroJanS” logo. C
PH (B+): Clearly Jim has never needed to be worried about having larger Trojans. B
Western Kentucky
JV (B): Welcome to the Honor Society, Hilltoppers! A+
PH (C-): Hmmm. I like the new jerseys, although they don’t need a gray one. And they should have one pair of pants…in gray or maybe white, since they have a white lid. And it doesn’t look like the pants stripes quite go all the way down to the end of the pant leg…but compared to last season? Big upgrade. B
North Texas
JV (B-): That would look good on blue turf, not green. C
PH (B): The mono green is bad, especially with the green helmet. And unless the colors are off, the green has gone from a much more “yellow gold-green” to a green with more … green-green? I like how they got rid of the jersey piping, but the helmet change is a downgrade. And if the greens are different shades, then that’s a downgrade too. B-
Fresno State
JV (B-): Like a real bulldog, unsightly in the front and even worse in the rear. C-
PH (C): The good: ditching the dropshadow. The bad: every other tweak. Hey Fresno, Arizona called, they want their gradient striping back. C-
Hawaii
JV (B-): See the above description for Fresno State. Yowza. C-
PH (B-): Holy shit. What’s with the ass stripes? Unless there’s some reason for that, like some Hawai’ian tradition or something, there’s no call for that. D
Nevada
JV (A-): Whew! Ending on a good note. A lateral move. A-
PH (C-): They went from a C- uniform to a C- uniform. What’s good about that? Nothing. C-
Class dismissed.
ducktracker
Trackin’ the Ducks
A bit of sad news greets us this fall, as #1 Ducks Fan Michael Princip will be relinquishing his duties as the head Duck Tracker. About a week ago I exchanged E-mails with Mike, and he hit me with this:
As much as I want to continue with the duck tracker, I really don’t think I’ll have the time to. I am pretty much working two jobs right now, and with any free time I get, there is family stuff I have to get to.
The Bulwark helmet project is part of the 2nd job I am involved with, and it is really taking up most of my time, outside of my full time job. I hope to have some information to share with you guys, once we get past the initial testing phase.
Best of luck with all that Michael, and we’ll miss your tracking. But…
in every crisis, there is an opportunity. We are now looking for a new Duck Tracker to take up the reins. Mike has even offered to allow the next Duck Tracker to use his template. So here’s what I propose — this is Mike’s 2010 Duck Tracker. If you’re interested in tracking the Ducks for 2011 — drop me a line after today’s game, and send me a sample of your work — feel free to work off Mike’s template or come up with your own. I haven’t decided how we’ll do the DT this year, but it will live on — perhaps one person will become the tracker, or perhaps we’ll have a group effort. But show me your chops.
OK? OK!
all sport uni tweaks
Uni Tweaks
We have another new set of tweaks today.
If you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.
Remember, if possible, try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per tweak. You guys have been great at keeping to that, and it’s much appreciated!
And so, lets begin:
~~~

We start with G. Pong, who has a Padres tweak using Timmy E’s template:

Phil,

This is my first try at a tweak, I read in the blog that the padres are considering a redesign, so I took a shot at it. The colors are borrowed from the other San Diego team, the Chargers. Didn’t include the yellow though, to much like my Classic Brewers otherwise. I also like two tone hats sometimes, even though it is frowned upon. Hope it looks classy!

~~~
Next up is big set of tweaks from Terry Duroncelet, mostly baseball this time around:
Hello, Uni Watch. I noticed in my comments and in my last Uni Tweaks submission that I kinda sound arrogant, and I just wanted to say that I’m not that kind of person. I am always very happy and humbled to see all of the submissions every weekend, and I hope that this continues for many years. I have since relocated to Slidell, Louisiana, and will be there for about a year. But enough talk, I have some new concepts today.
Cubs: NNOB on the home uniform, and a fauxback road uniform.
Rays: I heard a while back that the Rays look too much like the AL East rival NY Yankees, so I decided to utilize the Columbia Blue more. I also gave them a different sock stripe pattern than the St. Louis Cardinals stirrups they used last year.
Tigers: I erased the white twill away from the road uniform, and since AL road jerseys don’t have that NOB rule that the NL roads do, I decided to try something different: NOB on the home uni, NNOB on the road uni. As for the socks, I honestly don’t know where I got the inspiration for them… *holds in laughter*
Orioles: Current uniform (sans-wordmark on the road sleeve) with classic hosiery.
Bullets *ahem* Wizards: I got rid of the ball/monument logo from the back of the neck, and gave them simple red-white-blue striped socks. BTW, isn’t it time that striped socks returned to the NBA?
Angels Fauxback: Although I like the Yin/Yang thing going on in the LA area; Blue NL Dodgers vs. Red AL Angels, I went along and made up a fauxback uniform using the current template and the older navy crown/red brim hat and navy socks.
Denver Broncos: Current logo, number font, and socks, with a nod to the past in design and colors.
Minnesota Twins #1: I made the Harmon Killebrew-era pinstripes the primary home uniform, and put the navy-edged-in-red numbers on the road as well. I also added a matching pant braid to the pants to better correspond with the jersey.
Minnesota Twins #2 I took the throwback numbers and put them on the Twins’ (or is it Twins’s?) current home uniform, and took the TV numbers off of the road uniforms in looks #1 and #2. The numbers on the second version are supposed to play off of their jersey scripts.
Atlanta Falcons 2.0: I made a previous Falcons uniform before, but I felt like I could do better, so I made a 60s-inspired uniform with the current fonts.
49ers Fauxback: I know that this Bruce Genther schematic is incorrect, but it does bring an interesting look to football, even though Roger No-Goodell would never approve of it…
New York Yankees: I went back to the McAuliffe font that they used to use in Babe Ruth’s day, added a matching pant stripe on the road uniform, and streamlined the interlocking ‘NY’ on the home jersey.
Boston Red Sox: The sad reality is that it’ll be a good few years before MLB players get it through their heads that this is baseball, not bedtime *coughpajamapantscough*, so here’s my alternative solution to today’s colorless uniforms: Negro League-style contrast plackets, which I’ve done before with the Dodgers and the A’s. I also made the hanging Sox/socks more prominent on the road uniform.
Any and all commentary is welcome.
Thanks again,
Simply Moono.
~~~

Last up today is Rick Porter, who wants to…gasp…change PSU:

Phil,

JoePa might pop his coke bottle glasses if they came out wearing these..

Rick (a.k.a. Slidetuba)

Thanks for the tweaks, lads. Back tomorrow with more.

uni tracking 2011

Uni Tracking

I will occasionally be featuring the uni-tracking that our various readers undertake throughout the season. Today we have Walter Young, who tracks the Amazin’s.

Here’s Walt:

My monthly frivolous Mets uniform tracking documentation.

First, a complete 2011, April through August calendar, tracking the Mets daily wardrobe. Depending how you post it, the individual game results are hyperlinks to their respective ESPN box scores/game photos.

Second, a combined breakdown of Mets uniform combinations used through August 31.

Thanks Walt! Anyone else who tracks their team can send me your tracking reports.

~~~~~~~~~~
That it for today kids. Don’t forget, there’s still two days left to enter the Seahawks Redesign Contest (details in that post).
Hope everyone came though Irene OK and that you guys have your power back (if you lost it) now. I never lost power but my cable/interwebs/phone was out for almost a day, and the summer residence was without power for three days and phone for four. Have a great Saturday.
    Hopefully this new line of Under Armour uniforms won’t last too long. They looked about as awful in person and on TV as the defense played. All of the numbers (front, back, and shoulders) were so tiny and condensed that they were nothing more than white squares on the player’s body even from just 15 rows up. 5’s looked looked 8’s and 6’s looked like 0’s and no one could tell who anyone was. The pants striping and the ever-disappearing sleeve stripes were completely laughable thanks to having to conform to UA’s new template. And the microscopic NOB weren’t even legible of TV let alone in person, and many on special teams didn’t even have a nameplate to begin with.
    They showed a lot of highlights from the championship season at the stadium before the game and through out the broadcast, and there was no comparison. These new jokers look like the knockoffs you buy at a Kmart.
    Thank you Jeff. There is definitely something as too simple. Plain and boring just doesn’t equate to good. No matter how classic it is. If they wanted to make a change, keep the trim add numbers to the helmets again and then we’ll talk.
    Penn State is an F
    Plain and boring is not attractive. Well it could be ok if the colors were decent. Dark blue? White? Uh no.
    Yeah, I like traditional, but Penn State takes it too far. Basically, they wear practice uniforms for games. No way anything more than a C.
    I think the reason people like Penn St.’s unis is because they haven’t really changed much over the years. No, they’re not interesting to look at, but they’re clean, simple, and fairly iconic. Much better than Maryland’s, for example. Obviously there is some middle ground where they could add a bit to the Lions’ unis and make them more aesthetically pleasing, but give me Penn St. over the Maryland or Arizona St. shitshows any day.
    That’s pretty much it, Anthony. I wouldn’t want every team to look like PSU, but I’m glad they’ve stuck with that look.
    Not me. I do not like them because they look like practice uniforms that a 6 year old could DIY.
    And the color combo is not attractive. How many people say their favorite color is white?
    How many say their favorite color is dark blue?
    if it was the lighter blue they wore before 1969 that would be a tad better.
    When a plain Jane gal walks by I do not pay attention. If an attractive sexy lady does. I look. They turn heads. Not average and for PSU I would say below average does nothing.
    Alabama is not a fancy uniform. But the color is better than dark blue.
    Phil and Jim both love PSU unis and I know the grade any time I see this kind of column.
    If PSU added the leg stripes back and was lighter blue it would be a major improvement. And add the numbers to the helmet
    If they were the original colors of pink and black that would be a vast improvement.
    The helmets they wear are plain ugly also.
    Exactly. They look like crap. I understand the tradition and stuff, but these “traditional” uniforms look like crap with the modern fabrics.
    The biggest improvement of any college uniform this season is, IMO, Penn State. Call me an old dinosaur but for years the cheesey collar and sleeve trim bugged the sh*t out of me. They seem to have been added simply for the sake of adding something…i.e. for no good reason at all. Although the addition of the trim years ago could be called a minor change, it struck me as a sellout. If you have the integrity to go with a plain uniform while everybody else is getting fancier duds then g*damnit stick with an entirely plain uniform. Don’t ruin it by getting semi-fancy. The entirely plain uniform is a great look…stick with it Penn State.
    However, it would not surprise me to learn that Penn State has just lost a dozen recruits because of this uniform modification…all of which recruits now opting for schools that promised three different helmets and sixty-three different, multi-colored, uniform combinations. ;>)
    Baltimore Orioles AAA team, the Norfolk Tides, had a different take on the camo military uniforms last night:
    link
    shoulder stripes were always possible on the amateur pacifist template…it’s the reedidas template where they disappear
    just one HUGE reason to be happy nikegon won the NFL contract
    Phil,
    this is the first time Nike has attempted to put shoulder stripes on their Pro Combat template. All the other renditions were sleeve stripes. In the Nike Teambuilder, the only option is sleeve stripes. None-the-less they look awesome.
    Here’s a couple more pics. Check out the tiger stripes on the helmet!
    link
    link
    Credit blakemoran from TigerDroppings.com for the pics
    Both Washington State University and Arizona State University have something on the shoulders of their jerseys(though this is the first time the three stripe template has been used.) It would be interesting to know just how they do this with that template though… It looks like they ironed them on the WAZU and ASU jerseys.
    Wow…a #20 Billy Cannon jersey! Haven’t seen those since I was a kid. FWIW, LSU retired Cannon’s #20 years ago after he won the Heisman.
    BTW, I saw Billy Cannon last year at an LSU game, along with Y.A. Title, Jim Taylor, Jerry Stovall and Tommy Casanova.
    Your efforts are awesome =)
    Jersey top-wise, except for the grape soda pit panels, I’m likin’ the jersey. It’ll be interesting to see how far the shoulder stripes wrap around the shoulders on gameday. That helmet is to die for (in a good way).
    Any shots of the pants? If not, can you give us a description?
    blakemoran from Tigerdroppings.com took the pics so all the credit goes to him. I haven’t seen any shots of the pants yet.
    here is the thread to follow link
    Does LSU actually have any history of wearing metallic gold? Seems like they’ve been yellow (shut up) forever. Overall it looks pretty good…if we ignore that it’s another white alternate helmet. Good in a vacuum, but dammit every freakin team does not need a white helmet.
    When Nike starts on the NFL I hope they can do the shoulder loops without the underarm panel thing… but even with it, it’s better than the Reebok quotation marks.
    Metallic gold helmets in late ’40s, early ’50s.
    You can see ’em in EVERYBODY’S ALL-AMERICAN…
    link
    (movie’s in color, though)
    Okay, not sure about late ’40s.
    I think maybe they wore puple helmets when Y.A. Tittle played there (based on a vague recollection of an old b&w PR photo of him I saw somewhere along the line).
    LSU did wear “old gold” prior to adopting their present uniforms (yellow gold) in the mid-fifties. The shade of yellow gold has changed over the years, as has the purple. As a kid I remember the yellow gold originally being slightly darker than it is today.
    link
    Didn’t they wear gold for their Pro Combat uniforms last year or the year before that? I swear they did…
    Of course Arizona State can wear black. Did you forget they had a black helmet In 1954? The history is obvious.
    The sun isn’t black. Ever. It sometimes appears red through our atmosphere and almost always appears yellow. Black for ASU is about as BFBS as BFBS gets.
    But they aren’t the Suns, they’re the Sun Devils. Devils are evil, and evil is commonly depicted in black.
    They’re also fictional ;)
    If they can be blue in North Carolina, they can be black in Arizona.
    /yeah, ok, the BFBS is kinda dumb, but someone has to attempt to defend it, right?
    Actually, Fresno didn’t rip the stripes from AZ, they ripped them from the 2009 Va Tech toy combats.
    Also, notice the new “aloe plant” stitching on the Baylor shoulders last night? Those also came from the same 2009 Va Tech nasties…
    link
    that shoulder stitching is from the original Pro Combat template and the pants stripes were introduced in the second year of the Pro Combat template
    Me too. Reminds me of ’82 when I kept track of my wiffleball HRs. Tied Roger Maris that year, I did. And I did it while wearing a White Sox batting helmet and copying the batting stances of Willie Stargell and the Brewers’ Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie. Would have copied Harold Baines’ stance too, but I didn’t know it. Ah, memories.
    What is the deal with the NOB though? It is far too small.
    I’d wager the Under Armour logo on front is more prominent.
    The NOBs are RIDICULOUSLY small. But how good do my ‘Cats look?!
    A: Not as good as they would look if they had purple pants on with either one wide white stripe or two white stripes going down the sides.
    Two things in this pic: Proof NOBs are too small on BC uni. Second: The way uni lays on Luke Kuechly is causing his name to disappear.
    I like the Penn State redesign. As long as you’re going for broke, stripe the pants. I don’t like too much unstriped space on sports uniforms.
    Watching the BC Northwestern game, and it looks like BC has scrapped the new helmet stripes, including the stained glass look. Anyone know the story behind this?
    Phil, how can you give Baylor a D? How are they worse than Bowling Green, UTEP, Purdue, Oklahoma State, and Georgia Pro Combat? You really think Baylor is on the same level as Maryland? I would put Baylor at a B- at the very least.
    apparently pant stripes paired with an excellent rest of the uniform can bring down the entire grade.
    I agree Doug. If the pants had regular stripes that matched the helmet, their uniforms would be awesome.
    BC kept the old helmet and pants for the NW game. Kind of happy about that. Looks like there’s a gold mismatch though.
    After all the attention on the stained glass effect on the new BC helmet stripe, they are not wearing it today. Looks like they are wearing at least some of the new uniform, but the helmets are the same as last year…so much for that new feature.
    Terry Duroncelet, those are some nice tweaks!
    I love seeing the Cubs return to their classic NNOB style; love the plackets on every team that you gave them to, love the McAuliffe font on the Yankees (though I can’t see them going for it now that the Red Sox are the only ML team wearing it).
    And (unlike on the otherwise-excellent Chris Creamer sports logos site) you even positioned the numbers correctly!
    Good stuff.
    Agreed.
    Also strongly agree with your question, “BTW, isn’t it time that striped socks returned to the NBA?”
    I third these remarks. Some excellent work here, both in theory & execution. Something about the Wiz’s unis really caught my eye — but the entire collection was impressive.
    “Didn’t think they could get worse, but they did. I’d like more legible numbers and clearly Russell is trying to copy one of Swooshie’s worst jersey features, the collar horns. They had the chance to ditch them, but made them worse. C”
    Nike doesn’t have a habit of using collar horns in football, that’s UA (or at least it was). Additionally Tech didn’t go back to collar horns (or collar stripes) they went away from them to a design they started using in 2008.
    It almost sounds like you are critiquing the uniforms from last year as the new ones, aside from the fact that you noted the numbers being hard to read.
    By the way on TV the numbers are a non-issue, its only in person that they are hard to read. Besides I prefer the gold over using the trim color so dominantly (its not a school color). I’m hoping the away uniforms will be the same as the 2009 ones, because its just not right seeing so little gold and so much navy when they play on the road.
    Nothing wrong with “bright” numbers as long as you know what you’re doing. A link would’ve been better than the white mid-border between the navy and gold that they came out with.
    Of course, the linked picture is an overall improvement to the current uniform, period.
    From a functunality stand-point getting rid of the white outline and thickening the navy one would be better. Though I think I’d prefer the current set up in terms of appearance, I wouldn’t complain about a move to a more legible set up.
    This is why these super tight uniforms are a terrible idea. South Florida is also suffering from the tiny NOB phenomenon, so it’s clearly an Under Armour gaffe.
    link
    yeah I don’t like these small names and the strecthy material, either. When the Notre Dame RB was going out of bounds @ about 3 min left in the first half, the USF defender’s jersey got grabbed and it looked like when you pull on a balloon.
    Also as much as I hate the multiple helmets on USF, I do like the green one, though. They should just keep it and scrap the others.
    Penn State is an F
    Plain and boring is not attractive. Well it could be ok if the colors were decent. Dark blue? White? Uh no.
    Penn State is NOT an F… it’s an INCOMPLETE. It’s a football uniform default template… anyone who grades this as a “design” should get back to their real job fast…
    Oregon (Toy Combat costume only)
    JV: It’s the unchangeable equation in Vilkamatics: Bellotti Bold + BFBS = F. Stealth numbers? Fine. F-
    The Oregon uniforms look like a bike inner tube with poor typography applied to the rubber… these are gosh awful… no wonder Under Armour is kicking Nike’s ass.
    link
    Under Armor is kicking Nike’s ass? Have you seen Maryland’s, South Carolina’s, or Texas Tech’s uniforms?
    UA is not kicking anyone’s ass in uniform design, that doesn’t mean Nike is doing any better, but they certainly aren’t doing worse.
    “Under Armor is kicking Nike’s ass? Have you seen Maryland’s, South Carolina’s, or Texas Tech’s uniforms?”
    ~~~

    yes, i think that’s why he said it

    hey, some people like that look — to each his own…but you’re not gonna find too many old farts like me liking what 17 year old’s like, and i wouldn’t expect them to

    No Joke FMC (Fox Movie Channel) is airing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie the same time the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff starts tonight.

    Major props to Jeremy Lees and the USF equipment staff to get the #63 stickers out on short notice for Lee Roy Selmon.

    link

    The players are also wearing them on their helmets. Tough to see in this pic but it’s the yellow dot to the left of the flag:

    link

    I’m at the UCF vs. Charleston Southern game and the refs are wearing black pants. Pictures will follow when I get home.

    That’s the standard in CFB now, no need to go out of your way to post them, we’ve already seen them in every game on TV today.

    Plenty of the new NCAA clown suits on display today, which makes BYU-Ole Miss look even better by comparison. Surely that makes the 5 and 1.

    Other observations from today:

    Virginia Tech looks really, really good in their new uni’s.

    Once you notice them, Auburn’s pants stripe jarringly looks like the result of a mistake by the manufacturer (which, essentially is what they are).

    How does TCU get anything above D for a grade? They took a bad uni and made it even worse.

    Rice-Texas is going to be a fine looking football game this evening.

    Remember those white pants that Adidas was testing out with Michigan? Some teams are using said pant in games. UCLA’s pants look far more muted than normal. Wouldn’t be anywhere near offensive if the gold wasn’t so faded in the process. Leave it to Adidas to turn UCLA’s pants from “UCLA Gold” (their official shade of “Old Gold”) to “Piss Gold”.

    I don’t remember New Mexico wearing the Mizzou template last year, but that tired template is well beside the point. Check out the link A fauxback helmet, maybe? the red stripe tapers in the back. Maybe they’re the latest “Hydra” team?

    “Tired template” is the right description, for sure.

    NM didn’t wear that last year. They looked good last year. And they didn’t wear that helmet.
    link
    I graded them an A+ with that uni.

    yeah combine that helmet with last year’s uniform template and you’ve got a winner (well in terms of appearance), too bad they didn’t do that.

    I know that I’m blowing up the hell out of the comments, but East Carolina got updated jersey tops (current Nike cut with no purple side panels). Plus, given their flip-flop history with helmet decals, they’re using the Jolly Roger logo today. Sorry, no pictures yet. South Carolina looks pretty crappy absolutely shitty. And that mini player name? SMH…

    From Wash vs. E. Wash: the Huskies have a “150” painted at the 25 yard-lines (presumably for an anniversary for the school). It’s painted only in their official shade of purple (which is like a dark lavender), making it really difficult to see. White or gold would’ve been much better.

    for anyone wagering on movi’s 5 & 1 …

    i gotta think the BYU/ole Miss. game is the early clubhouse leader…

    just a good looking football game

    I’d certainly would like to cast my vote for ND/USF… Notre Dame sharp as always and USF much improved

    i think movi doesn’t like ND since they look like navy, and he LOVES HIM some rebs in red

    San Jose State is also doing the name-on-leg thing.
    link
    And Phil’s wrong – the worst bumpersticker trend these days is the tramp stamp.

    He is the guy giving signals….The darker jersey makes him easier to spot on the sideline

    These Georgia and Boise uniforms look terrible on t.v. They don’t look like football unis. The big, thick red stripe is dumb, and the Boise bronco is completely illegible.

    I like the little blue socks and orange shoes.

    Sorta like Mom dressed you to go to Mets game when you were three.

    David Letterman writer, Eric Stangel, sums up the Georgia uniforms nicely:

    “Who designed Georgia’s uniforms? Ocean Spray?”

    hey terry…check your email…i had originally sent one to “nawlins….” and didn’t realize you use “chill…” etc…

    PH

    Remember, men…you play for the name on the frontback of the jersey…not the name on the backswoosh on the front.

    Good idea. The think the last time Duke intimidated anybody on a football field Eisenhower was in the White House.

    But that’s all changed now, huh.

    Actually, they started wearing those UCLA stripes not too long after the Colts did. I’d guess around 1960 or so (this shows their 1961 uni)…
    link

    Air Force, of course, wore them from their very first teams.
    link

    Colts uni with Blue Bombers’ helmet graphic.
    Hmmm…think that might have inspired the designer of the original Chargers unis?

    Well, if your team’s graphics make a good necktie, it’s only logical that a necktie would make a good looking uni, right?

    Watching the Boise St. & Georgia game, i think the new Mountain West logo “http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2c/Mountain_West_Logo_2011.jpg” looks a lot like this “http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6QzeVBltG8I/Tjhpx6RNN5I/AAAAAAAABUc/LsH1PTvrAOI/s1600/Doctor-Who-logo.jpg”

    Of course, when I think of Hawaii I think of lots of people walking around wearing black.

    And, y’know, surfing and sunbathing and stuff.

    In black.

    So now Oregon is 0-2 wearing Volt and Stealth, and have lost to an SEC team names the “Tigers” twice in a row. Will they wear mono-Volt uniforms in an embarrassing future loss to Clemson before they figure it out?

    Is this weird back of the leg striping on Hawaii, Utah, and Bowling Green some… uhhh… throwback nod to the 1930s?
