Paul here again, filling in for Phil one more time. Today we’re going to take a little tour into the world of reader Bruce Menard, who has an interesting habit: He makes of a point of scrutinizing old, completed auctions run by the major sports auction houses, looking for noteworthy things he might have missed. He recently pored over a Legendary Auctions sale from 2007 (nice of Legendary to keep all the listings up on their server) and found lots of good stuff. And unlike many of our other “Auction Action” entries, everything here is truly uni-related — no bobbleheads, no spin-off merch. Everything here is wearable. Let’s take a look:
• We’ve talked quite a bit lately about some of the Dodgers’ unusual spring training protocols. Here’s another one: Around 1950 or so, they had their rookies and coaches wear blue two-button pullovers with a vented shirttail (here’s the full auction listing).
• This Satchel Paige All-Stars jacket is the bomb (full listing).
• Here’s an absolutely magnificent college football all-star uni. Man, I love everything about this one. Wish we could see someone modeling it.
• Speaking of all-star uniforms, here’s an old minor league baseball example — in satin! Interesting that the minors were using such a festive all-star design in 1938, when the big leagues had settled into the routine of having the players wear their regular team uniforms.
• In the annals of disturbing Native American imagery used by sports teams, I’d somehow missed this one (full listing).
• Extremely tasty chain-stitching on this Syracuse Nats warm-up top. And check out the button design! (Full listing.)
• How did Wilt score all those chicks? Apparently they were wowed by his personal blazer.
• Love love love the how the red/white/blue ball design fits into this ABA zebra jersey.
• Just when you thought you’d seen everything: a Cardinals kimono (full listing).
• Oh baby, how sweet is this old Utah Stars shooting shirt (full listing).
• Here’s something unique: Red Auerbach’s uniform from the old Miller Lite commercials (full listing).
• Okay, I lied, here’s one item that isn’t wearable, but it’s still pretty cool: Pete Rose’s Expos suitcase.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The Reds and Brewers wore Negro Leagues throwbacks last night, and it looks like they were genuine flannels. I’m trying to find out who made them — stay tuned. ”¦ Here are the remarkably unattractive jerseys from last night’s Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game (with thanks to John Sheehan). ”¦ “I happened to catch a Colorado Rapids game and noticed they had ‘5280’ — which is Denver’s altitude — printed on their socks,” says Kayce Harris. “I tried unsuccessfully to get a screen shot of the socks and in the process found that ‘5280’ was also on the back neckline.” ”¦ FNOB alert! That’s Carl Taylor (duh) of the 1970 Cardinals. “Chuck Taylor was also on the team that year,” says Steve Kraljic. ”¦ Someone is selling bogus Flyers Winter Classic jerseys (with thanks to Mike Sambuco). ”¦ Rockies pitcher Jason Hammel, inspired by teammate Ubaldo Jimenez, went high-cuffed with stirrups on Friday night and credited it with helping him pitch better. Key quote, from this story: “”Really, the idea was it would keep me cooler. I don’t like all the heat and humidity. Plus, I needed to change something up.” Now we just need to get him to change those purple shoelaces (big thanks to Tom Nawrocki). ”¦ My friend Friederike Paetzold posted a photo of this spectacular 1955 Russian Zorki camera. “You couldn’t use just any old strap with this,” she says. “It’d have to Siberian mohair with Lenin’s profile woven in a jacquard pattern.” ”¦ Ryan Madson wore his jersey backwards the other day (with thanks to Meech One). ”¦ Matthew Jean notes that Logan Pause of the Chicago Fire had a nice-looking choice of headgear against the L.A. Galaxy. ”¦ Here’s an interesting sight: a 1941 Navy baseball team that wore light-colored jerseys and dark pants (good find by Gavin Robey). ”¦ Color-on-color note from Levi Buck, who writes: “On Saturday the Tennessee Smokies and Chattanooga Lookouts both wore shades of blue. Naturally, the umpires were wearing blue as well.” ”¦ The chest insignia on a lot of the 1944 Red Sox players appears to have been riding mighty low. Anyone know more about that? Also, why would they use their road uniforms for a team portraint? (Good find by Bruce Menard.) ”¦ Miami, Ohio State, and Kentucky are reportedly changing to Lebron-branded hoops uniforms this fall (with thanks to Matthew Robins). ”¦ Also from Matthew: a sneak peek at Boise State’s new Amateur Pacifist gear. ”¦ The campaign to get Mike Commodore to wear No. 64 is heating up (with thanks to Jonathan Deery).
Okay, that’s it for me for the next four weeks. Phil will be handling the lead entries in my absence, and Johnny Ek will be handling the Ticker (as of right now, anything sent to the Uni Watch e-mail address is being auto-forwarded to him; additional info on how to contact each of us during my break is here). I’ll be back on Aug. 8, but I expect to have three ESPN columns running between now and then, the first of which will be this Thursday. Phil will provide a link once it’s up. Everyone have a great summer, and I’ll see you again soon.
Wow. A Sunday edition of “Auction Action” — has there ever been one before?
Enjoy the time off, sir. Catch you link.
thanks for taking the weekend, paul…and to echo not chimp’s words, enjoy your break…hope i can adequately fill your chucks
~~~
does that boise community college dressup soldier really have a skull under the helmet? (see pedestal base)
why yes, i think they do
what the fuck are they selling with that imagery?
just die it?
Didn’t BSU already wear those in the 2010 Maaco Bowl?
(link)
Even though it’s a media release there is a little bit of history about 50 years of the Australian rugby union team – the Wallabies.
link
It says the display starts tomorrow. Please tell me someone in Sydney is going to see this and take photos!
Im kind of surprised with these Boise unis simply because of the gloves… Nike’s first chance to stray from grey and they don’t take it? something seems off here
“Here are the remarkably unattractive jerseys from last night’s Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game”
And yet I can’t stop looking at them…
You know, that’s not too terribly awful. At least the numbers are clearly readable.
I might have to add that to my DIY list.
Someone needs to make that his or her UW membership card design.
Yikes. Seriously ugly. Not in the same league as the Atlanta Falcons uniforms, but still profoundly painful to look at.
Ubaldo Jimenez, not Jose. Go Rockies.
yep, although Jose Jimenez was a Rockies reliever for four seasons 2000-04. His name.. Jose Jimenez. He was not an astronaut
Oops. Brain cramp. Will fix.
Note about the Tennessee Smokies/Chattanooga Lookouts game: the game on Friday night had a significant rain delay of almost 3 hours, so the game would have finished late as it is. It went into extra innings, and as per Southern League curfew rules, the game was suspended in the 10th inning at 1:09am. The game was restarted at 5:15pm on Saturday, to be finished before the 7:15pm start time of the regular saturday game between these two teams.
The Lookouts had a really long game on Thursday night in Alabama (Huntsville I think), so my guess is that the Lookouts were running out of clean jerseys and had to use their home blues, so the Smokies opted for their powder blue alternates. I don’t know. I’m not very good at this investigative stuff, but that might be an insight.
Yeah, I knew the game had been suspended the night before, but I didn’t know about the Lookouts long game in Alabama.
I’m going to assume the same as you did- they were running out of uni options. It was an interesting matchup color-wise, to say the least.
Any idea why Australia wore blue jerseys with a yellow stripe for their WWC match against Sweden today? Great idea to shelve that awesome Aussie green in order to wear the national colours of your opposition.
Their usual kit is yellow top with green shorts, but Sweden got to choose so Austraila was forced to wear their change kit.
Interestingly, their change kit is all navy, but they were forced to wear yellow shorts since Sweden was wearing blue shorts. The yellow shorts had green details which didn’t match anything on the shirt.
Confusion. Wear your opponent’s colors and hope they pass the ball to you by mistake.
Like when SMU wore black against Army?
In their first bowl appearance since, what, Hoover was President?
Second – don’t forget the destruction of Nevada in the Hawai`i Bowl in 2009!
Enjoy your vacation, Paul!
The Carl Taylor FNOB screenshot is from April 21, 1970. He had just mowed down Randy Hundley, who tore a knee ligament and missed a huge chunk of the season, thus helping to ensure that the collapse of ’69 would not be a short-lived, little-remembered footnote to Cubs history.
“…Also, why would they (1944 Red Sox) use their road uniforms for a team portrait?”
I can actually answer that for everyone. The photographer, George Dorill, was based out of St. Louis. He did a big run of American & National League team potraits for the Sporting News for many years. Instead of traveling the country, he waited for the teams to come to him at Sportsman’s Park where both the Browns and Cardinals played their home games from 1920-53.
Sorry, spelled “Dorrill”.
Paul, just replace the link. Cartoonize it, then, Blahdow! Badass logo!
“I tried unsuccessfully to get a screen shot of the socks and in the process found that ’5280′ was also on the back neckline.”
Each MLS team (except for New York) has some sort of logo, wordmark, or motto on the neckline (New York has “Red Bulls” underneath the number. That’s how you differentiate an authentic jersey from a replica.
As for why Australia wore navy, Sweden was designated the home team for the match, and wore their regular yellow jerseys. Accordingly, Australia had to go with their change jerseys (blue and gold are the ancient heraldic colors of Australia; green and gold are the modern national and sporting colors).
how do i post a picture? you’d all enjoy jersey our team wears for annual senior hockey tournament starting today…
If you’re an Internet Explorer user, then “right click”, and a little menu should have “Properties” at the bottom. Click that, and the image URL should appear. Copy the URL and paste it in the comments here.
I rarely use Safari, and I don’t know a thing about Firefox, so I can’t help you there.
Hope this helps.
thanks. i’ll try it first thing tomorrow.
US WNT in their hideous all black uniforms today.
Hideous yes, black no. They are blue.
They are in fact black.
Black Widow was the look Nike was going for. Its up there with the Mexico Women wearing the black kits Germany wore in last year’s MWC (There was gold, red an black but no green).
pretty sure they’re black
link
That’s Racist!
They are black – NIKE SAYS SO!
This was printed in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this morning…
For several days shortstop Ryan Theriot has brandished a captain’s ‘C’ on the right chest of his batting practice jersey. The letter, a byproduct of a recent clubhouse prank hatched by left fielder Matt Holliday, brought Theriot more than a little grief.
“Where I go, they follow,” Theriot quipped Saturday afternoon.
Holliday had orchestrated the patch from last month’s Joplin benefit to be ironed on all of Theriot’s shirts. He arrived to the park Thursday to find a ‘C’ ironed to his batting practice jersey.
La Russa has never sanctioned a player captain during his term as a major-league manager. He accorded Oakland A’s third baseman Carney Lansford and former Cardinals shortstop Edgar Renteria unofficial.
Have a relaxing break, Paul.
Logan Pause looks like he got that headgear from Yuri Gagarin…
No number on the front so you can’t tell but Logan Pause should wear number 11 if he doesn’t. (Relating to the topic of names to go with numbers since 11 can look like the pause sign.)
Those Cincinnati Redlegs/Tigers uniforms look so glorious. I am waiting for Ebbets Field Flannel to drop the jersey to $99.
I just punched a baby when I read about Kentucky may go to LeBron branded unis. I would rather have them covered completely in swooshes. I already have to deal with him being a small owner in Liverpool.
Maybe the USWNT retires the all black monstrosities after getting royally screwed today.
uh-oh somebody thought it was over!
Have a great vacation, Paul. See you on the other side!
hooray for the red, white and black!!!!!
Hear, hear!!!
Not sure if this has been posted before: It appears that Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar is wearing the powder blue Father’s Day ribbon baby blue wristband today against Detroit which matches the Royals’ powder blue alternate jerseys.
at AT&T now for Posey Armageddon Bobble Day. If I don’t return, Phil you’ll have to do the eBay thing.
On the Commodore 64 item, Keith S asked in a reply Friday what magazine I referred to about typing in programs from listings in the back, but I didn’t see the question until now.
Compute’s Gazette was my mag of choice. I think RUN also had a similar feature.
Any news on what the new LeBron jerseys for those schools will look like? I’m assuming they’ll have a new uni. They change the unis all the time now anyways so this is just one more excuse.
NOOOOOO!!!!!! I can deal with teams switching up jerseys and adding colors and all that – whatever, but the USA had BLACK jerseys today vs. Brazil. BLACK!?! Last I checked we were red, white and blue! This has to be the worst uniform in the history of uniforms. The Bengals and the Vikings are a couple of team, but we’re talking about a COUNTRY here!
Question: Why do many of the MLB throwback unis not have the MLB logo on the neck like the normal ones?
John Kruk just gave a thumbs down to the stars on the cap. Good man.
The Satchel Paige All-Star jacket belonged to a friend of mine. Great piece!
As much as I hate to admit it, the Rockies, with their purple pinstripes and black vests, have stumbled into a unique and distinctive appearance. It’s an image intertwined with their history, as much as the Tequila Sunrise is for the Astros.
Four games above .500 at the break,
link (don’t know if they wore the all-star stars because we were sitting up high)
and link It’s a great day to be a Bucs fan.
Oh, and the ump took a pitch to the groin, so we got to see the trainer wearing link on his polo shirt.
AND, RyCo, Kek and Terence were in the house! Thanks to them and their significant others for a great time. Pictures to come when I get my film developed this week.
Film?! Dude, that’s hardcore!
He probably ran out of flash bulbs too.
You didn’t stick around for Power bobblehead night?
(conspiracy) Theory on the US WNT black kits:
1. They have that motto “Pressure Makes Us”
2. When Coal is under enough pressure yada yada yada, it can become diamond (nearly impossible, given the conditions needed but possible nonetheless).
Is there a possibility of us seeing a ‘Diamond’ kit if the WNT makes it to the World Cup finals? or possibly an introduction of one if they win the World Cup? That would be a gimmick of Nike’s I’d approve of (especially if it meant the death of the black kit).
Cool baseball picture on Shorpy today:
