I don’t have a photo, but there was a point in the first half of yesterday’s Giants/Eagles game when Ahmad Bradshaw was carrying the ball while his mouthguard was stuck on the top of his helmet. If anyone DVR’d the game and can get us a shot of that, I’d love to get a closer look.
In other NFL observations from yesterday:
• Check out the NFL logo on Tom Coughlin’s postgame interview cap. Looks like a hybrid of the old and new logos — new football and stars, old lettering.
• Alge Crumpler lost a good chunk of his helmet decal.
• Good thing Bill Belichick doesn’t play in the NBA: He’d get fined for wearing an upside-down headband.
• The Ravens wore solid black. Ewww.
• I don’t normally pay much attention to commercials, but I almost fell off the sofa when I glanced up and saw a new NyQuil spot that shows Drew Brees backwards. Even weirder, Brees appears properly oriented a few seconds earlier in the spot. What gives? If you watch the commercial carefully, you can see that the flopped image is actually a shot of Brees looking at himself in a mirror, but it happens so quickly that it’s easy to miss that. Very odd choice.
• Turning to college action: On Saturday I wanted to make this recipe, so I went to Brooklyn’s Chinatown, Sunset Park, to shop for a few ingredients. Found what I needed and then popped into a bar, which had the Humanitarian Bowl on the teevee, and that’s when I spotted a Fresno State player with a big ol’ cast on his hand — looked like a club. We’ve all seen that before, but the difference this time is that the player in question, Robbie Rouse, is a running back. Couldn’t believe it when they gave him a carry. Then he caught a pass! That was his only reception of the game, but he got 14 carries — amazing. Couldn’t find a photo from the game, but here’s a shot of him from practice. That’s exactly how the cast looked in the game. Can you imagine carrying the ball with that thing? (Recipe turned out great, but I’ll have more on that later.)
• Nobody much pays attention to Troy’s football team, so it wasn’t until the New Orleans bowl that people started noticing the punter’s amazing beard.
• In the D-II national championship game, Delta State QB Micah Davis had his jersey completely shredded in the first half. They stitched him up, but it looked like his uni number had changed from 12 to 17.
• And in the D-III title game, Wisconsin-Whitewater’s QB Lee Brekke had a massive gap between the numerals of his uni number.
• And a note from Friday: Eastern Washington’s Bo Levi Mitchell had lightning bolt-shaped eye black. Never seen that before, which is kinda surprising, no? Seems like something that would’ve become trendy by now.

Only problem is, they used the wrong Lions logo. ”¦ Coupla cool finds by Mike Hirsh, including an 1880s Spalding baseball uniform order sheet, and a 1930s baseball jersey with mini-pennants on the back. ”¦ Interesting double logo rip-off by Kingstree High in South Carolina, whose basketball team uses a Lakers-style insignia and a Jags logo patch on the shorts (as noted by Chris Rodgers). ”¦ “My son just turned seven, so we decorated his birthday cake to look like a hockey rink,” says proud papa James Huening. “We used red licorice pieces for the red line, blue decorating icing for the blue lines, cherry baking chips for the goal lines/creases, and blue sugar for the paint inside the creases. The cake was a bit small so we didn’t bother with all the face-off circles/dots.” ”¦ We’ve seen NHL goalies occasionally wear the old-school waffle-style blocker as a throwback gesture. But have we ever seen the waffle blocker used in a non-throwback context? As you can see in the caption, that photo was taken in warm-ups — Brodeur didn’t actually play in the game, and I’m not sure if he’s worn that gear in a game yet (good spot by Ben Gorbaty). … Here’s a weird one: an MLB sticker trading wallet. I’m sure someone out there can tell us the story behind this, right? ”¦ RIP, Captain — see you at the Radar Station.
About time: Thanks to Saturday’s events, the uniforms of the American military now stand for greater justice and equality, which says more about America than any camouflage football uni ever will. Bravo.
WELL, HERE’S BIG NEWS!!!
Two to four inches of snow possible during Bears-Vikings tonight.
The “Monday Night Outdoorpalooza Practically the Winter Classic NFL Monday Night Game.”
Ah, the oddness of it all continues.
—Ricko
any news on whether the vikes will be wearing their *throwbacks* for this one?
Haven’t heard. Watching local news now seeing it they say anything about it.
Did unveil 50 Greatest Vikings of All-Time, though…
link
—Ricko
What no number 4 on the list?? It’s an outrage, an outrage, I tell you.
According to this source. Yes (Odds and Ends section)
link
Also noticed that the practice shots that I’ve seen show them in the throwback helmets.
Possibly a total of 8 inches by tomorrow morning.
So let me revise that for Twin Cities.
2-3″ this afternoon.
2-4″ more tonight.
So who knows for sure what the Weather has in store of the Monday Night Game.
Temps in 20s, though, so at least won’t be brutally cold.
—Ricko
Yeah, that’s gonna be fun. Wife’s commute takes her through the U area at the time of the great ticket cluster….ah…bleep, plus the addition of the snow… I expect to see her here in the east metro sometime around Thursday.
I think 4-wheel drive was the worst thing that happened to Minnesota snow driving…people get that and think that they can go anywhere and do anything… 4 drive wheels sliding off the road is merely twice as ineffective as two drive wheels sliding off the road.
It’s kinda funny how that works out. Virtually every time the Chicago area gets enough snow to affect driving conditions, the ONLY types of vehicles I see stuck in ditches, medians, etc. are those of the 4-wheel-drive variety.
People don’t seem to understand that 4-wheel-drive does not improve your braking ability in those conditions.
Another element for tonight: Parking.
Being a commuter campus, there is plenty of parking at the U of M Campus.
On the weekends.
Today, however, is somewhat of a regular day on campus (although finals must be over for most students). So parking will be a p-a-i-n, compared to a Saturday Gopher game.
Add the snow, and the whole thing just gets goofier and goofier.
Gotta love it.
Supposedly playing surface in great shape. But we’re already getting freezing drizzle.
—Ricko
Oh, yeah, all the seating at The Bank is aluminum benches, too.
Best bring a nice warm pad to sit on. Hey, the stadium isn’t designed for use after November.
(29 years ago today, Vikings last played outdoors at home. Lost 10-6 to the Chiefs in a wholly forgettable game, but for the aftermath as fans swarmed over the old Met like locusts, ravaging it for souvenirs. When they were done it was the stadium version of the creaky old house in IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE. Sat in the press box and watched it all, then wandered around in the rubble in the first base stands thinking about how much of my childhood was in that place.)
—Ricko
A toast to the old Met, Ricko.
Weather Channel had a brief report on the game earlier today, and the reporter says when “these two ‘cold weather teams’ meet tonight . . .” Well, if one team has spent the past 28 years playing home games indoors, they no longer rate as a ‘cold weather team.’
There is still a difference between the Vikings playing outdoors in Minneapolis and another dome team like the Saints or Falcons coming to Minneapolis to play outdoors.
The Vikings’ players are at least somewhat accustomed to the weather by virtue of the fact that they’ve been out and about in it on a daily basis the past few weeks. Plus, their practice facility has outdoor fields. I’d imagine they’ve been using them.
Good to see you back posting, Ricko.
The snow has begun.
in minnesota?
in december?
GTFO ;)
Background…and can get to TC live weather radar from here…

Hmmm…makes you wonder just how the stars are aligning, doesn’t it.
I mean, wouldn’t if be almost mystical if a rookie quarterback (in this instance, Joe Webb) lit up the Bears for a Viking win on the occasion of “50 Greatest Vikings” weekend? Outdoors, and in throwback unis to boot?
(SEE: Fran Tarkenton vs. Bears, Met Stadium, 1961, first Viking game ever. Hope the Bears wear their white pants; that’d be just TOO perfect.)
It a Webb win likely? Hardly. Is is possible? Who knows, depends on those stars, I guess.
—Ricko
If the Vikings wear the throwbacks tonight (and if they don’t, they are hopelessly dumb), that will be one mighty fine looking football game.
Ah, I was at this game.
link
-59F windchill, baby.
Tonight? Nothin’ but a stroll on the beach.
You were actually there, Brinke? Wow. The greatest moment in Bengals history. I remember it like it was yesterday.
It was like being on the surface of the moon. I was there not to see the game, either- it was for some type of promotion for my radio station.
We left- couldn’t handle it.
and here’s how to clear the entire stadium of snow, in just 43 seconds.

Time-lapse photography is the best. So cool.
Paul,
I believe the jersey that the Charlie Brown sculpture is from Charles Schulz’s house team at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena (see this patch: link) for the Snoopy Senior World Tournament the arena annually hosts.
Schulz’s #9 (which Charlie Brown is wearing here) is retired inside in the same color scheme.
Spoke with a friend of mine who works for Schulz who also mentioned that the shape inside the pentagon is a silhouette of the Ice Arena which is in the background over Chuck’s right shoulder (left side of the photo).
that is exactly correct. i remember seeing SCHULZ 9 hanging up inside.
here’s a live look.
link
Correct – the youth hockey teams based out of the REIA wear NHL-pattern jerseys with the same logo.
When I attended Sonoma State Univ., I used to stop by the REIA a couple of days each week, rent a pair of hockey skates and take a few laps around the ice. I remember seeing Charles Schulz himself in the coffee shop – from what I heard, he always spent a few minutes down there each morning, having a cup of coffee and watching the kids skate before he headed upstairs to work on “Peanuts.”
The Indiana basketball uniform numbers are a change this year. I believe they are the new mesh style adidas numbers being used in the NBA. The front numbers also look bigger to me than in previous years…but I could be wrong.
I noticed them during the UK game, but forgot to mention it here. It is more easily noticed on the white numerals on the red jerseys.
Loved the little Woodhead video, except it was missing something: The “reveal” when he makes a sale, admits who he is, and autographs the jersey. I’d be pretty tee’d off if I told the salesguy that I thought he was Woodhead, he denied it, and then I bought his jersey from him as a gift, and later saw this video that it was actually him after all and he’d lied to me and not offered to autograph the jersey. And I’m not even big on autographs or anything; that just seems like kind of a jerky way to treat a fan.
Dang, Craig beat me to it. Charles Schulz is one topic about which I’m maybe more passionate than sports uniforms!
Hey, Rob…
My dad was Charlie Schulz’ boss at the time he sold “Peanuts” to the syndicate. As you know, the main character were named after fellow employees (my dad not being one of them). I was pretty little, but I knew Lucy, sorta. She was the telephone operator/receptionist who sat at the top of the stairs.
—Ricko
This whole thing, from Paul’s ticker mention to Craig and Rob’s comments to Ricko’s personal connection, is a sign. I’m cracking open my copy of Schulz and Peanuts and starting to read it. Today. Been sitting on my “to read” pile too long.
And I’m just going to throw this out there: Peanuts, taken as a whole, is the most important work of American literature to emerge from the WWII generation and post-WWII era. I’ve been working my way through the Complete Peanuts as Fantagraphics has been publishing it, and I honestly think Roth, Bellow, Mailer, Updike, et al don’t hold a candle. Even the post-1960s strips are holding up better than, say, the later Rabbit Angstrom novels.
Certainly the most pervasive.
Pretty tough to be an American and not be at least a bit aware of some of the characters and the basic elements of their personalities.
Not to mention we all probably have our own “Little Red Haired Girl” wandering through our memory banks somewhere.
—Ricko
Ricko, that’s an amazing story…and I completely agree with RS’s estimation as well. The amazing thing about The Complete Peanuts, at least to me, is how many of the strips I haven’t seen before…and I thought I had it pretty well-covered!
Luckily, I managed to marry my own little red-haired girl!
ALSO: That deal being offered by Mark Pexna is an absolute steal. I ordered a piece last fall and I couldn’t be happier. It’s freakin’ beautiful.
I agree. His work is outstanding. I ordered the Eddie Shore featured in Uni Watch’s interview with Mark.
A few yaers ago the Steelers had Chris Fuamata Maafala as one of their running backs. I know that his last name was on his jersey so counting the space that would be 15 letters
Fuamatu-Ma’afala
14 letters. One hyphen, one apostrophe (or whatever that diacritical mark is called). 16 characters.
The Desert Cardinals have:
Ridger-Cromartie
and Stephens-Howling
I am amazed that Marc-Andre Fleury would wear a Bauer mask… He is a poster boy for Reebok Goalie.
Since classic ballparks seem to be fair game here at the UW, did anybody else notice what I think to be another fascinating quirk about Forbes Field? This taken from the MLB Network showing of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series.
Down along the third base line, there almost looked to be a SECOND dirt third base line! That was where the electric tarpolin was stored. Instead of the infield tarp being rolled up and stored along the field box railing as other teams did, the Bucs kept their tarp in an underground compartment right behind the third base line. So if and when rains came, I guess one of the grounds crew flipped a switch, the thing would open up from the ground, and the crew would roll it out and cover the infield.
If you didn’t notice it, and if MLB Net whows the game again, or if you ordered the DVD (like me), take a closer look.
That sort of tarp was also used at Three Rivers Stadium, IIRC. It had an automatic machine that would roll out and stretch out the tarp.
Busch Stadium also had it, as Vince Coleman learned to his regret during the 1985 playoffs.
I’m thinking old County Stadium in Milwaukee (when the Braves played there) may have had a similar set-up, too. But IIRC, it ran behind the first base line instead of third.
Marc-Andre Fleury’s throwback mask is a thing of beauty… and the classic black and gold is what the Penguins should be wearing for the Winter Classic, not that bizarro fauxback with “vintage white” trim!
I would have liked to see the Pens sport the yellows from the 80’s… Agree that the current WC sweater is a mash up of too many uniform elements, it means nothing.
Uh, oh…that eBay seller should expect a C&D letter from the folks at Zamboni pretty soon because that’s not technically a Zamboni, but an ice resurfacer…
A high school in northern Minnesota had sold a whole bunch of buttons that read “Official Zamboni Watching Crew” to pay for some new unis and the Zamboni folks shut that down in a hurry.
Hand me a Kleenex, willya?
Are we having Jello?
Would you Xerox this, please?
My favorite observation on that issue? A single frame cartoon of a group of people sitting in a boardroom with a sign on the wall saying LUCASFILM, LTD. One of them is reading a piece of paper and saying…
“We can’t protect ‘Star Wars’? What kind of Mickey Mouse ruling is that!?!?!”
—Ricko
On one hand, I understand the heartburn that the folks at Zamboni have about protecting the brand, but at the same time, there has got to be some sort of logical point at which you say, “Okay, this really isn’t doing our brand name any harm.”
But, then again, that’s why I’m not some hotshot attorney.
The Carolina Hurricanes and affiliated teams (including the Plymouth Whalers) use Olympia resurfacers, as do the Vancouver Canucks, so there is competition out there.
In my experience, the use of “xerox” as a generic has been fading. In fact, I don’t remember the last time I’ve heard anyone in person refer to copying in such a way.
Xerox is a name that gets brought up a lot in examples like this, alongside Kleenex and Q-Tips. I have to say, though, I’m 24, and I can’t recall anybody ever using Xerox in that manner.
i still call it xerox
(hey paul…how about that for a t-shirt???)
however, it’s the “workcenter” now…since the thing emails, faxes, copies,
gives hummersstaples…all in colorbut if i would like to make a digital reproduction of a paper document, i still ask someone to “xerox this for me”
For as much as you pay for some of these work centers, they ought to give hummers.
Yeah, that one is pretty much vanishing, just as long ago so have “Frigidaire”, “Victrola” and, I suppose, “Scotch Tape”.
Was simply quoting examples of how brand names creep into the popular vocabulary as generic terms. Didn’t say they stayed there forever.
I’m sorry if I didn’t use only current examples. After all, that’s all the counts or that anyone recognizes, isn’t it.
Nitpickers Hoover.
—Ricko
Here’s a good one: Vise Grips…really they”re locking pliers!
That football mini helmet display is from Dairy Queen. When you bought a sundae, it was served in one of the helmets. They came with the separate face guard, which were all grey. They had all the appropriate colors, like a separate bluish silver for Dallas, and sold one giant sheet of stickers with all the team logos and center stripes to decorate them. You could also get the cardboard display board to organize them as shown. I had the entire set myself at one point.
To this day my mom still occasionally reminds me of all the trips to DQ and the ice cream she had to eat so I could have the entire set!
Nike must be pleased.
TRON was No.1 at the box office this weekend.
Good for neon shoe sales.
—Ricko
A big thumbs up to James Huening and the hockey rink cake. Very well done without resorting to something commercially prepared (well, except for that Zambo – er, ice resurfacer ;-) ). Hope his son enjoyed it.
Heh. In this case, link.
Thanks for the kind words. And in case you’re wondering, it was a full family effort. Both parents and all three kids pitched in on the decorating.
Indeed, Jimbo.
A cake among cakes.
—Ricko
Another one I missed until just now…
Thanks, Ricko.
Interesting that link would show up in today’s ticker…
The other day, a guy I play hockey with mentioned that the Hockey Hall of Fame has a link that Brent Sopel would wear last year with the Blackhawks when the team was shorthanded.
Not surprisingly, it appears that he’s still doing it link (and he’s also still wearing his sock stripes way too low).
Personally, I’d prefer to go back to the link. Mike Modano might be wishing he had gloves like that this year…
The NFL mini display board is from the 1976 season when the expansion Seahawks were in
the NFC West and the expansion Buccaneers
were in the AFC West.
“New logo for the Washington Mystics”
Of course, on the surface this is kind of a ‘who cares’ – but I’m guessing those will be the Wizards colors next season as well. Nice shades of red, white and blue. Still an awful logo though.
Same logo it has always been – just different colors now!
Where my leftover Xmas money (if any) is headed – link
Lyons Township HS in IL also does a “Double Ripoff.” On the uni in Lower Right Corner, you can see both the Lakers’ “moving L,” and the Detroit Lion.
link
That Cap/Jersey collection is INCREDIBLE! I spotted one of the maroon VaTech/Yankees caps that the Hokies wore in the special Spring Training game…very cool.
“Those new Big 10 division names may not last for long.”
Ummm, could it be because they are STUPID??
Have there ever been any non-geographic division names that weren’t rather stupid? Heck, the only other non-geographic names I can even think of are the Century and Capital divisions the NFL used for it’s Eastern Conference in the last few years before the AFL-NFL merger.
Century, Capitol (East)
Coastal, Central (West).
But, y’know, “Legends” and “Leaders” are SO much better.
(eyeroll)
Another example of “overthought and supposedly insightful marketing.” The only people who don’t think it’s silly and stupid are the geniuses who thought of it, and the dupe clients they sold it to.
They didn’t foul this one off. This is a seriously swing-and-a miss. Well, more like “strike ’em out, throw ’em out.”
Fifty years in the communications business and I can’t think of one reason I’d attempt to sell something so knot-headed and lame to a client.
—Ricko
Maybe they should take a cue from the ACC (“Atlantic” and “Coastal”) and just call the divisions “Big” and “Ten-ish”.
They could go with “Red” and “Not Red”.
Red:
Minnesota
Ohio State
Wisconsin
Indiana
Nebraska
Illinois (orange is almost red, right?)
Not Red:
Michigan
Purdue
Penn State
Michigan State
Iowa
Northwestern
It almost works, in it’s own horrible way.
As someone who has not seen many really good Gopher football teams (I was born in `71), how about
a.) Teams that get to beat the Gophers annually Conference
b.) Teams that only get to beat the Gophers every few years Conference.
You put the Gophers in “a” because annually, they prove themselves able to beat themselves. Considering that my alma mater (U of MN-Duluth) won the DII championship, the yellowish nocturnal rodents might not even be the best football team in the state.
“Great Lakes” and “Heartland” or something like that.
Shirts & Skins
“White” for the schools with white or cream as one of their colors. “Off-White” for the others.
Actually, “Lakes” and “Plains” (or “Heartland”, yes) wouldn’t be bad…depending on how the actual topographical references would hold up for the teams as presently divided.
—Ricko
Let’s not forget the NHL’s “Clarence Campbell Conference” and “Prince of Wales Conference.”
As for the Big 10, I still think the division names should be “Bo” and “Woody.”
Not Woody. Unless the logo shows him throat-punching a Clemson linebacker from the sidelines. Y’know, to remember that moment of legendary leadership by a crazy, out-of-touch old sumbitch.
—Ricko
I miss the Wales and Campbell Conferences. But the old NHL division names: Norris, Smythe, Adams, Patrick… yeah. And the divisions before the 1981 geographical realignment? How about Montreal, Pittsburgh, Washington, Detroit, and Los Angeles in one division?
If they want to go back to the history of the conference may I suggest one conference be run, run, run and the other be punt.
I would like to see these make a comeback:
Wales Conference
Adams Division
Patrick Division
Campbell Conference
Norris Division
Smythe Division
I’d really hate to have been at the news conference announcing those those names.
Woulda made you cringe.
Like watching someone proudly announcing that the role of Baby Jesus in this year’s Nativity Scene has been awarded to a 40 watt light bulb.
—Ricko
How about the Midwest and the Mideast divisions? Break it up geographically that way too. (Taking a cue from the old NCAA tournament regions.)
They announced it live on the Big Ten Network and then had the press conference afterwards.
How about just plain old “American” and “National.” It seems to work fine for just about every other league that uses those division/conference designations. And with those you don’t sound like some little league organization.
About time: Thanks to Saturday’s events, the uniforms of the American military now stand for greater justice and equality, which says more about America than any camouflage football uni ever will. Bravo.
+1 to this, Paul…
They said blacks serving with whites would disrupt the military, too.
Tell that to Colin Powell and anyone who served with him.
—Ricko
btw, props to the Philadelphia newspaper that led with a full-page photo of DeSean Jackson holding the ball aloft, heading for the endzone, with the headline…
ON,
DASHER!
Nice spin on an unforgettable Holiday week game.
—Ricko
yeah…that’s pretty much what the times, post, news and newsday all have here too
actually…i was surprised they were this *kind*
news = “BRUTAL!” (picture of matt dodge sprawled on turf after desean had blown by him and the other 10 failures)
post = “GIANTS DOG IT” (picture of vick running with two superimposed dog heads on giants players…i shit you not)
newsday = “This Stinks!” (picture of eli with really bad facial expression)
nyt = (photo & cap) “For Giants, a Bitter End”
~~~
not that i expected much, but i expected better, especially from the post
*and by “better” i mean much more sarcastic/witty
here’s the post:
all things considered…they really are
shittastelessYeah, God forbid that it could simply be that the other guy played better and beat you. It must be that your team (the bums) lost it.
Let’s blame the punter, too. Like the high snap didn’t have something to do with it? Love those fans/media whose real knowledge/understanding of the game is about an inch deep.
Although even Coughlin ragged on the punter at first…until he later realized the long snapper hadn’t exactly nailed his part of the proceedings.
—Ricko
Does anybody really take the Post seriously anymore?
For anyone who’s been trying to send me $$$ via Amazon Payments: I believe the problems have finally been solved (or they better have been, or else I’m gonna start hanging out in front of Jeff Bezos’s house with a sign that says, “Why Don’t you Just Kill Me Now Already?”).
I’m eager to test the system now that it’s supposedly been fixed. So if you’ve been thinking of buying a membership, now would be a great time, hint-hint:
“I just try to be different,” Triche said. “Even in high school. We have team shoes. But I rarely wear team shoes. I just try to bring my own little style to myself.”
That pretty much sums up the college and professional athlete these days.
I wonder what Bear Bryant, Bobby Knight, Ara Parseghian or even Adolph Rupp or John Wooden would say about that statement?
Who cares what they think? Players want to wear their own shoes… really, this is a big deal? Hell, in their day, guys had “team jocksraps,” too. Would they be mad about the individuality of underwear, too? Geez…
MONDAY NIGHT OUTDOORPALOOZA WEATHER UPDATE.
Office is right near Mall of America and airport, certainly less than 10 miles south of The Bank.
Just came in from having a smoke. A good inch of snow so far (based on accumlation on vehicle roofs), and still coming down like crazy. Visibility probably between a quarter and half a mile. Not terribly cold and very little wind, though, so that’s…perfect, all things considered.
Looks like those who’ve longed for outdoor NFL football in Minnesota are sure gonna get what they want tonight.
Even more interesting:
so…the purple hand of death rises to slay da bears?
this HAS to mean…….back for another year. “I just felt that the 2010 season didn’t work out like we wanted and I owe it to the guys to come back.”
Pace of snowfall seems to have picked up.
Paul,
About link Robert Harvell showed us this amazing image of a Packer player wearing link in practice. We didn’t know what to make of it at the time.
Still don’t, but the pads do have a link in the new HBO Lombardi documentary. Really looks like full chest protectors wrapped around his legs.
Regarding the Bowling Green basketball throwback uniforms:
Anderson Arena, home of Falcons basketball since 1960, is celebrating its final season. Next year, the BGSU men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team will move into the Stroh Center, next to Doyt Perry Stadium.
Notable BGSU basketball players include Nate Thurmond, Howard “Butch” Komives, and Antonio Daniels. Former Falcons head coaches include Bill Fitch and Dan Dakich.
The scoreboard at Anderson Arena was from the old Cleveland Arena. BGSU alumnus Nick Mileti, who in the ’70s owned the Indians, Cavaliers, Crusaders, the Richfield Coliseum, and radio station WWWE (now WTAM), was instrumental in bringing the scoreboard to Anderson Arena in 1976, prior to the demolition of the Cleveland Arena.
The Ravens are trying to be the Miami Sharks… Fail!
just spoke to ricko on the phone, and he’s reporting (from the road)…this could be the “snowiest viking game ever” (in terms of actual, in-game amounts)…
as he sits on the freeway in snarled traffic
i will say this…i don’t think i’ve been this excited to watch a viking home game since i was about 14…
Scuttlebutt Update…
1. Because they are saying that students with a UofM student ID have a great chance of getting into game free, the belief is that a LOT of Viking ticket holders opted for the refund…and that the crowd may be only be about 35,000.
2. Favre has gone for “Out” to “50/50”.
3. Snow may taper off about game time. So far about 4″, I guess, but it’s still snowing now.
4. Field is not so good. Hard, slippery, with patches of ice. Because of snow, tarp was removed at last minute.
5. Likely biggest snowfall, day of game, in Viking outdoor history.
6. People may have to spend time digging out their vehicles after the game, because many have already been in line while snow has been falling.
7. Perhaps in excess of 10,000 Bears fans believed to be on hand (which, if crowd is only 35K, wuld be around a third of the audience).
8. Even before rush hour (I left office at 2:50) it was bitch. LED sign that estimates time from work entry to home exit ramp normally at 6 minutes that time of day said “over 25 minutes” today.
9. Problem with this snow is, nowhere to put it. Fifth major snowstorm in about six weeks (third in four weeks), with no thaw in between.
9. Workers today used a shotgun to blast another whole in the Dome roof to relieve pressure. That makes five holes now (a fourth opened on its own recently) and they may have to blast more holes for the same reason.
10. One thing sure, It’s gonna be great TV, I imagine.
ESPN shows Kolber freezing to death, and the fans going bananas.
Steve Young is right. The weather is an un-used asset for the Vikes.
Build ’em an OUTDOOR stadium.
Bud Grant would sanction this.
nice cake kid!
and i noticed that paul showed a pixture of your drubbing of siue. since kcai does not have athletics, and siue just went d1 in hoops, something she did not appreciate paying for, that shot as to be the first time either of her schools made the watch.
by the way, i have got to figure out a way of watch this game tonight. figures that i finally want to watch a darn game, and it is on espn.
I just saw this.
Thanks. Any luck with the game?
LOVE LOVE LOVE the Gator helmet with the Gator Head logo. The Gator helmet has a long history with its lousy script. Gators added “Gators” in script as part of the Cheatin’ Charley Pell overhaul (switching to orange jerseys at the same time — Pell had orange at Clemson). 11 years later, Steve Spurrier — a very uni focused coach — negotiated several terms in his contract when he took the job — blue jerseys, white helmets with “F”, grass field and Miami back on the schedule. He got them all implemented except for the helmet change, which I heard got push back from Gator Boosters. In any event, the AD commissioned a design project for the helmet and sports department logos generally, and the Gator head design was created in 1996 or so, with the idea to be put on the helmet, but the year in which the switch was planned was the year following the first national championship, so the Gators DID NOT put the gator head logo on the helmet, instead sticking it on the jersey in an odd spot. The white “F” helmets they’ve broken out for throwback days and the Nike unis last season were teriffic and would be awesome on the helmet shown with the gator head logo. Somewhwere, Steve Spurrier would approve this change. (New coach was raised on these “script” helmets, however, and may not want to change).
Following some Chicago media folks on Twitter…..They posted a pic of the program for tonight’s MNF game. It’s supposedly “Old School”…..Comments say: “They’re missing the snow”, but actually, it looks like they’re missing a Bears uniform. What team is that????????
link
Hey, thanks for the link. Got to get my hands on that program.
Why the heck is Virginia Tech wearing so many helmets and unis this year?
I hope TCU wears purple. I do not like the proposed uni much at all
link
Those NFl helmets were a neat item from the 70’s. my brother and I had them. He later got all of them from ebay
As Lloyd Braun would say… Am I crazy, or is that a lot of caps?
what’s the soup du jour?
Wrong, Phil!
Lloyd Braun was George Costanza’s nemesis:
Lloyd Christmas wanted “the soup of the day”!
This is like the first time I beat my father at 21 or when I finally saw a picture of my favorite DJ.
ESPN reports that some players are even going as far as testing out metal cleats for the Vikes/Bears game. I thought this was football, not baseball o_O
here’s kind of food for thought…
it’s late january…the nfc is down to two
the game is in atlanta
who comes strolling into town?
the iggles…
qb’ed by…
I just finished reading a very good book about that whole debacle: “The Lost Dogs” by Jim Gorant.
A must read.
What happened saturday with the military camouflage and football?
don’t ask
Ya I was curious as well. Please explain.
This line is funnier than Phil’s.
indeed…first i thought it was YOU saying it…then i thought it might be powers…
Paul’s reference is the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
Bruins in white at home against the Ducks (third sweater), according to the B’s twitter feed.
What the hell.
Vikings wearing throwbacks according to radio. Pretty sure they said “road” throwbacks which is interesting since they wear color at home. But old road unis were more distinctive so maybe so.
Will have to tubs in to confirm…if I ever get home that is.
no…it’s purple
My gosh, the ESPN pregame guys are just slobbering over #4. Berman is just in love. (Does Madden know?) “A boy from Kiln Ms playing in the snow…” BF goes to visit some terminally ill child. “That’s the kind of guy he is.” (As opposed to cheating on his wife with some sideline bimbo.)
I just want this guy to retire.
I think we’ll need a stake or a silver bullet. At least that’s the way they do it in the movies.
that depends, brinke…is he a werewolf of a vampire?
Woo Hoo…I am actually looking forward to MNF for once!
You mean you weren’t looking forward to this three years ago?
link
For the record, you can drive a steak through my heart anytime (preferably ribeye, thanks).
What are those things extending down from Favre’s shoulders?
BTW, Jaws just referred to Favre as the ultimate warrior.
link
neither one. now they call him ‘the ultimate warrior.’ so—i dunno.
why is it that only the male reporters/broadcasters are fellating favre…yet the ladies are treating him like a cheating prick?
Phil,
Suzy Kolber might have some history to explain why:
link
Better option: Sword
/there can be only one
He’s a ninja:
link
Thanks LI Phil. I assume you meant throwbacks. Not in front of a TV yet but DVRibg (is that a verb?).
Such a letdown now that it isn’t snowing. Pfeh….
The mismatched purple is really bugging me.
I thought the facemasks would bug you more than anything.
link
Yeah, that too – but that kinda goes without saying.
The screen shot at the end of quarter #1 showed snow coming down, but not real hard…
I thought the Ravens looked great yesterday.
…and they just briefly showed 57 of the Bears with a big chunk of logo missing after the touchdown.
Urlacher (I think it’s him) has his helmet logo ripped off one side.
Nope, not Urlacher….
Olin Kreutz.
gesundheit~
note to matt dodge…that’s how you punt to guys like desean and devin
You haven’t been tweeting him, have you?
‘Cause it’s not the right guy if you are…
Are they booing or are they actually chanting Kluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuwe?
Nice cake JTH.
Thanks, Ben.
That is very cool.
And I know where you got the figures:
link
I have these guys,
link
but I might be willing to add them to Paul’s raffle.
Ha. Yeah, Hockey Guys.
And the cake would have needed to be about 5 times the size of that one to get all of them on there.
Either it was in a Belotti font or Farve’s hanging towel has a backward 4 on it.
Does Winfield have any purple on his socks tonight?
What’s in your wallet?!
So the field is hard. It can’t be any harder than the Vet, or Busch, or Three Rivers were in 1980. That was simply a piece of carpet over a 6″ reinforced concrete slab.
Even a grass field in good condition isn’t exactly soft. So, whatever. They’re TV announcers, they have to babble on about something. It’s what they’re paid to do. I wish there was an easy way to mute the announcers but keep the field & crowd noise.
and how many times do we have to hear Tirico wonder out loud if that was Farve’s last pass of his career.
Tirico may be football book smart but he’s an awful announcer. Dude, lose the script.
Just skip the 5-year wait, enshrine him in Canton now. No, better yet—sainthood. I think you just have to email the Vatican or sumfin.’
We’re witnessing the greatest football player in the history of the galaxy. Cherish the moment.
Not really.
I wish there was an easy way to mute the announcers but keep the field & crowd noise
~~~
if you have surround sound, i think you can mute the channel the announcers are on…at least you could at one time
heh. yeah that would work in theory. I think need a better system then. I don’t have the option of muting individual channels, I’d have to disconnect that speaker, which means getting behind the TV and… it’s not worth that much effort.
What’s better:
Bears road white over navy:
link
or
White over white?
link
I prefer the white over navy…just askin!
And at Soldier Field, this should be avoided: link
white over navy, by far
White over white. Bear down.
It’s a tossup. Sometimes I like the white over navy, sometimes it’s the white over white.
I do know that I prefer the way they wear the all-whites nowadays, with the white socks rather than ye olde tymes link.
what about with the orange pants?
I know you’re joking, but I think they did have orange pants way back in the 40’s, for at least a few games.
and in the gene upshaw tribute game
Is that real and not a ‘shop?
I don’t remember that at all. :(
That was the game where there was a laundry snafu and they had to wear the Bucs’ throwback pants.

The 50 Greatest Vikings just hoisted Bid Grant on their shoulders.
Bud is wearing a ball cap and a polo shirt.
That is hard core.
Uh……BUD Grant. But you knew that.
no worries, brunke!
IN A POLO SHIRT.
It’s like TWENTY.
They shoulda gone w/o gloves and heaters for Bud.
Just tremendous!
I mean, build ’em an outdoor stadium and wreck the Metrodome. Let the weather be your friend- the fans love it, it’s in their DNA. Get back to the Purple People Eaters.
Of course, this means going back to the throwbacks fulltime.
JOE KAPP woulda never worn those ridiculous unis with the squiggle stripe on the pans.
It’s 50 and cloudy here in the East Bay. Signing off.
Throwback uniforms, but perhaps with the current helmets, so that the helmet would more closely match the jersey color (similar to what the Giants did by adding the metallic flake to lighten the color of their helmets). Now that helmet manufacturers have a wider variety of colors to choose from, as opposed to the days when the Giants had to wear navy helmets because they didn’t make royal blue ones, there’s no reason for a team to do otherwise.
As a Milwaukee native, this could be the most beautifully stitched uniform I have ever witnessed:
link
(hope that number stays, because I’m close to buying the retro alternate)
U of A wearing blue helmets isn’t uncommon this year.
They wore them on the road a couple of times
Stanford – link
Washington State – link
But I don’t think they wore the blue helmets at home this season.
Just want to point out that the Rangers gloves aren’t any different than just about any other glove on the market today, it’s just a different design that is very common with Bauer gloves today. I have a pair of last year’s “four roll” Bauers and they have a similar extension. The cuff roll is situated just over wrist joint while the “extension” covers the lower portion of the forearm. Heck, my old school Ferlands have the same design.
Hmmmmmmmmmm I love both road looks for The Osos. But orange pants do look enticing.
Bears.
