Wrigley Rules! er…Wrigley Rules?

Wrigley Rules Hed

By Phil Hecken, with additional commentary by James Huening

Just in case you hadn’t yet heard, there will be a football game played today at historic Wrigley Field — the first football game at Wrigley since 1970, when the Bears last played there, and the first time in more than seventy years that Wrigley will play host to a college football game. In fact, there have been more professional hockey games played at Wrigley in the last 39 years than there have been football games. That’s about to change when the Northwestern Wildcats host the Illinois Fighting Illini.

I had actually been planning this post for some time, even coercing requesting a bit of assistance and perspective from James Huening, who has attended more than his fair share of events at the Friendly Confines, although never a football game. It was just going to be a “secondary piece,” following my lede — which will now be bumped until tomorrow. Why the sudden change of heart? Because now the game will be played under “Wrigley Rules.”

Painting the sign purple

While this is pretty much of a gimmick, it’s a pretty cool one. Much like the Winter Classic Hockey Game played at Wrigley a couple New Years’ ago, it will probably be much more about the “experience” than the actual viewing pleasure. Sure, there will be some good seats, but it’s pretty clear from the configuration that there will be as many bad seats as there will be good ones. No matter, it’s sure to be a memorable game for all in attendance.

Before we get into the “Wrigley Rules,” JTH had origianlly penned this for today’s post:

For the first time since I was just one week old, football will be played in Wrigley Field. Perhaps fittingly, that game pitted the Chicago Bears vs. their long-time nemeses, the Green Bay Packers.

The Bears moved out of Wrigley Field after that season because the NFL mandated that every team’s home stadium hold at least 50,000 spectators.

Today’s contest features in-state rivals Illinois and Northwestern looking to take home the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk. Check that. It’s 2010. That means it’s the coveted Land of Lincoln trophy that will be up for grabs.

Interestingly enough, early in the 1970 season, the Bears played one home game at Northwestern’s Dyche Stadium, as it was known then, before deciding to make Soldier Field their full-time home

The fact that today’s game is between two NCAA teams rather than NFL isn’t the only difference. There won’t be any temporary grandstands and actually the field will be oriented east-west rather than north-south. This means that there will be two full 10-yard endzones — no need to stuff padding in the visitors’ dugout.

What else can we expect to see? Green “Ivy” in November? Check. Purple Marquee? Check. Now will the concession stands have a special beverage on the menu for the occasion?

~~~
Bears 3
Now, when this game was first proposed, more than a year ago, it brought back memories to some of when the Bears played at Wrigley. However, the field was oriented in a north-south direction. This of course allowed for temporary bleachers, but also made for a very snug fit in the south endzone. You can see the difference graphically here and here. I’m not sure that second graphic actually shows just how tight a fit the eastern end zone will be against the outfield wall.
~~~

When I began this post (earlier this week), I originally wrote, “I’m not sure whether the goalposts attached to the wall is really cool — or potentially really dangerous (not the goalposts themselves, but the fact that there is no room outside of the endzone to maneuver. Everytime I see tight end zones I always am reminded of stuff like this — granted, that’s not going to happen at Wrigley, but when irresistable forces meet immovable objects, we know who the winner is going to be.”

Whether or not this was prescient or common sense, we found out yesterday that today’s game will be played under new ground rules, or “The Wrigley Rules.” The geniuses who planned this game obviously hadn’t taken the safety factor into play when they changed the orientation of the field. Well, now (perhaps a little late, dontcha think?), they have. Here’s how today’s game will differ:

1) All offensive plays will head toward the West end zone, including all extra points and all overtime possessions.

2) All kickoffs will be kicked toward the East end zone.

3) After every change of possession, the ball will be repositioned for the offense to head toward the West end zone.

4) As a result of a coin toss held by the conference office Friday morning, Illinois will occupy the West team bench in the first half and Northwestern will occupy the West team bench in the second half and for all overtime periods.

I asked James for his reaction to the rules change. “So now it appears that another wrench has been thrown into the works,” he says. “I understand that the game has changed over the last 40 years, but the outfield wall is padded, isn’t it? I have no idea how soft the padding is, but I’ve definitely felt the boards and glass of a hockey rink and I’d imagine that the padding is considerably softer. Somehow they managed to play a hockey game at Wrigley Field a little less than two years ago.”

~~~
According to the Big 10, both Illinois and Northwestern expressed concern (the same concerns most of us had been voicing here for at least a week) and adopted the above “rule or field adjustments to provide the safest environment for the student-athletes.” The Big 10 had to request these waivers (although it’s hard to fathom anyone with a functioning cranium wouldn’t have immediately approved them).
bronko nagurski 4
For a bit of perspective on the hazards of playing football at Wrigley, Jim offers this, “Legend has it that there was no padding (in left field back then) until after the time that leather-helmet era Bears fullback Bronko Nagurski ran head-down for a touchdown and didn’t stop running until he was stopped by the brick wall. Nagurski is said to have gone back to the sideline in a daze and told coach George Halas ‘That last guy gave me quite a lick.’”
~~~

Today’s rule changes were determined to be the best of all options and will be in effect for this game only based on the unique layout of the field. According to Big 10 Commish James Delaney, “Both Illinois and Northwestern did significant due diligence over the past 18 months, but after seeing the actual layout of the field, all parties felt that it was appropriate to adjust the rules to further enhance the safety of our student-athletes.” Well, yeah.

While I commend the Big Ten for their concern for player safety, wasn’t this something they might have considered before they set this whole thing up? I realize one cannot tell from conceptual diagrams exactly how the field would look, but when you’re planning on attaching goalposts to a solid brick wall, with just a modicum of padding, which means your endzone ends where the wall begins you probably know long before the day before the game it’s not a good idea.

Even Jimbo agrees, “Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to play the meatball fan card here. I understand that it is a safety issue,” he says. I myself use a seatbelt when I drive. “I wear a helmet when I ride my bike. When I play hockey, I wear more than just the required gear (I use a neck guard, mouth guard and full cage) so I’m not questioning anyone’s toughness or anything like that. I simply believe that this eleventh hour rule change might be a bit of an overreaction.”

How big an overreaction, Jim? “Really, how often is there a play at the back of the end zone? And again, there is padding on the wall,” he notes. “It’s not as though there’s barbed wire or a pit of crocodiles. And I kind of feel bad for the folks who have seats in the right field bleachers. Unless a punt or turnover returned for a touchdown, all the scoring will be at the opposite end of the field. Although, I guess it is possible that a missed field goal could be returned for a TD.”

“Of course,” he does add, “There is always the possibility that they’ll see two points for the defense on their end of the field.”

Northwestern vs Illinois 1

So what does this mean for the viewers and the fans? Well, for those watching on TV (and now you know you will), probably not a lot — except there will now likely be more ample time for commercial breaks, as teams will be required to change direction with every possession change. However, the fans who bought seats by the east end zone will probably feel a bit gipped. The only way they’ll see any points scored is when you have a punt returned for a TD, a safety, or an INT taken to the house. And all PAT’s will all be kicked into the western end zone, and that really sucks — I mean, who amongst us wasn’t hoping to see an extra point sail across Waveland Sheffield Avenue? I know I was.

Remember when you used to play touch football in the street with an odd number of kids, and you had a “designated quarterback”? Or when you played baseball/softball with only six or seven players and you used a “half field”? Kinda feels like that now. But at least no one will involuntarily pull a Gus Frerotte

If nothing else, the Wrigley Rules will probably fuel more interest in this game even more than it would normally have. This morning, you can watch the ESPN Game Day crew live from Wrigley, but the game will be on ESPNU (so I’m not sure how many of us will be able to actually see it). Official kickoff is 3:30 Eastern/2:30 Central time.

colorize this

Colorize This!

Occasionally, I will be featuring wonderful, high-quality black and white photographs that are just begging to be colorized.

Last weekend I challenged some of the more adventurous to colorize a few photographs, which Paul had featured in columns earlier that week: This full panoramic shot of the 1918 Chicago Cubs, as well as a smaller section of that photo. Also, I thought this photo of Doc Crandall of the Federal League St. Louis Terriers would make for a good colorization.

At first, I didn’t think anyone would take me up on the challenge, but as the week progressed, three of you stepped up to the plate.

George Chilvers took on the challenge of the cropped 1917 Chicago Cubs.

Ian Carr not only colorized the 1917 Cubs, but he also did four(!) versions of Doc Crandall, each slightly different patch: bluish-purple, red, a red field with blue letters and what is probably the most likely, a blue field with red letters.

Finally, Dylan Buell not only colorized Doc Crandall, but he also colorized the entire 1917 Cubs panoramic portrait.

Great work gentlemen.

For the coming week, I’m hoping a few more of you will participate. And with the big football game in Wrigley today, this week’s challenge will be Bronko Nagurski, pro football’s “60 minute man.” Two photos to choose from: this classic, which should look something like this. The second photo isn’t quite as awesome, uni-wise, but it’s still pretty sweet. I believe the colors for that would be an orange jersey with navy blue numbers outlined in white, blue stripes, and navy blue undersocks with white stripes. I am not sure about the pants, but they’re likely khaki.

Give it your best shot! You can send all your submissions directly to me, and I’ll post everyone’s efforts next weekend. OK? OK!

all sport uni tweaks

Uni Tweaks

Catching up with the tweaks, but they keep coming in (which is good), so lots to get to today. If you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.

You guys have been pretty great keeping to the ~50 word limit per team tweak, and it’s greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Now, on to today’s tweaks:

~~~
Starting off the show is Larry Grace who has an Atlanta Braves tweak for us:
I was inspired by the look of the old BP jerseys, so I added red and some piping to their current road alt to separate them from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Larry Grace
~~~

Next up is UW favorite Bowen Hobbs, who has several tweaks across three sports: MiLB, NCAA Football & the NBA:

Hi Phil,
I’ve been working on a little college football and Minor League Baseball lately, plus I tweaked a Bucks concept I did a while back.

Starting with the Bucks:

I showed the previous version in my blog (44th & Goal), but I updated the buck’s neck since I last showed it. The design plays off of the old “Irish Rainbow” jerseys.

Logos / Home & Away / Alternate

Iowa Hawkeyes:

I’ve always thought the current logo looked like a chicken, so I decided to make it a hawk. The uniforms are pretty conservative, using a two-stripe scheme that is consistently displayed throughout.

Logos / Home / Away / Alternate

Erie SeaWolves:

I did this one over the summer. The current logo looks like an old sailor tattoo, and the type is awful. I went with the parent club’s (Tigers) color scheme and custom typography. My favorite uniform in the set is Alternate 3, as it uses a wraparound cap and jersey design.

Logos / Caps / Uniforms 1 / Uniforms 2 / Uniforms 3

Thanks,

Bowen Hobbs

~~~
And closing down the tweak show today is Ian Carr with a “North Stars” concept:
Hi Phil,
got one for ya; North Stars.
This is my first one. I loved the old North Stars logo and color scheme. Loved the Stars “Star Jersey”. Combine the two and Voila! I tweaked the jersey star JUST a bit to go with the shoulder yoke.
~~~

Thanks mucho to all the concepters. Back tomorrow with more.

Boise St Idaho Football

Orange Crush

Last evening, the fourth-ranked Boise State Broncos did something they’ve never done before. They were visible on their home field broke out an all-orange uniform and promptly went out and annihilated Fresno State.

Seeking to make a statement both sartorially and with the BCS committee, the Broncos were no longer camouflaged on the smurf turf, but were much more so when they were putting up sixes, which they seemed to do quite often. I needed to get to bed early last night, but the game was already 44-0 in the early fourth quarter ended 51-0. I ended up watching it till the end.

This was the first time Boise has worn orange jerseys since they installed the blue turf. I wasn’t paying close attention, but apparently Boise played in a Bowl game in their own stadium a few years back, and they were actually the visiting team — so they wore white then. They still looked awful, but much less awful than when they go mono blue. The new orange unis were basically the same as their usual blue ones, only they swapped out the blue for orange. Their gray/silver numbers and file folder accoutrements remained in place. *Sigh*

I’m really pulling for either Boise or Texas Christian to make it to the BCS Championship Game this year. Of course, if Oregon and Auburn remain undefeated, there’s little chance of that happening. However, I’m increasingly hearing rumblings that even if Auburn loses the Iron Bowl or the SEC Championship Game, even then they might play in the BCS game. That will really prove how much of a bias those who rate these teams have towards BCS conferences (or against non-BCS teams). Of course, we still have a long way to go before we face that scenario, but I would hope that if Auburn or Oregon were to lose, TCU and/or Boise would get a title shot if either remains undefeated. The BCS is already broken (we won’t get into a playoff today), but Boise is certainly making a case that they deserve a title shot — whether it’s with an invitation to the “big game” or via a “+1.”

~~~~~~~~~~
That’s just about all for today.
Oh yes, there is another college football game today that is being played in a baseball stadium. Army vs. Notre Dame in New Yankee Stadium. But nobody cares about that one.
And for those of you into orange monochrome, Miama will be wearing theirs today againt Va Tech. As far as uniforms go, I really will need to see this one in action, but you know how I feel about the whole Pro Combat ethos. That helmet sure looks purdy tho, doesn’t it?
OK, y’all. Have a great Saturday.
    I hope TCU makes it to the Championship Game before Boise State. I want some team to show how broken the BCS is, but as a Raiders fan it causes physical pain for me to say Go Bronc…OUCH!…dammit… even if it is a different team.
    …and let us hope for a lot of long drawn out scoring drives and no punts or turnovers in the Wrigley game so they can’t throw in too many more commercials.
    I’m still hoping for the miracle that would put both boise/TCU as 1/2. Get the top teams to lose, then the national championship is those two. We may get a playoff by next season then.
    If either Oregon or Auburn lose, but still face each other in the big one, while Boise and TCU go undefeated, I will not watch the title game.
    A sick part of me wants to see Oregon vs. Boise in a battle of the two worst unis. But the normal part of me wants TCU/Auburn.
    That monochrome stuff is killing me. And I thought Miami could not possibly look any worse than they usually do.
    A little birdy told another little birdy that the Northwestern Wildcats will be wearing Pat Fitzgerald-era throwbacks today.
    aren’t NU’s current uniforms more or less the same as the mid 90s? I think the pants stripes are different, but I they look about the same.
    I take that back- they wore black over purple then, they look to be wearing purple over black this year.
    The old Northwestern uniforms looked like this. They never should have changed.
    link
    The uniform combination today is purple helmet, black jersey, purple pants, which is the same as the 90s. However, the striping patterns are contemporary–the Northwestern stripes on the jersey are reversed, for example, and the old pants did not have stripes on them.
    Still, this is how they should look.
    Any clue as to how much each set of uniforms cost? Or do the manufacturers give a considerable price break? Amazing how many colleges feel that extra uniform sets are a good investment. I know the athletic programs are making money, but many colleges are feeling the financial pinch elsewhere, especially state-funded schools.
    I like the Braves alternate tweak because it makes sense unlike the current one, and I’d like the Bucks tweak more if the logo wasn’t so sleek. Tho I find the tramp stamps unnecessary.
    Whoops! Won’t be able to see the Illini / Cats game. I have a feeling it’s going to be a very repetitive game. And to think All State wasted all that money on advertisement pads that won’t get seen much on TV. An unfortunate stand.
    The statement about this being the first time the Boise Broncos wore orange on the blue field is incorrect. BSU installed the blue turf in the late eighties and had orange home jerseys in the early to mid-nineties. I don’t think they’ve ever gone monochrome orange though.
    yeah…mea culpa — i should have clarified that statement…they definitely have worn orange tops on the smurf turf — although i don’t know that they ever wore them since they installed the current generation of blue field — but definitely on the old carpet
    i think i was just repeating something i heard the announcers say rather than actually researching it (and i knew they wore orange, because ESPN, every once in a while, runs a history of the broncos, and they show a couple games where they’re wearing orange tops on the blue turf)
    as far as mono-orange? i do believe this is the first time for that however
    Not a problem. You also forgot to mention that 90% of Boise State fans are frontrunning dorks who never went to college and who dedicate their very existence to something they wouldn’t even care about if it didn’t constantly render positive results.
    Signed,
    Curmudgeony Universty of Idaho fan ;)
    Anyone remember a commercial back in the mid-90s, for a college football game on the Sega Genesis, that had some “sportswriter” throwing darts to determine a champion, and it landed on Boise State?
    I know we’re an overly litigious society, but if I had east end zone tickets for the game at Wrigley, I’d have filed suit yesterday.
    I spent how much for tickets on a unique, perhaps once in a lifetime experience, and it’s now been irreparably damaged for me!? I understand the possibility that the game flow could mean no action down in that end, but to do it on purpose is inexcusable. And, since this change is now public knowledge, I have incurred economic harm because I can’t dump the tickets for anywhere near what I paid for them.
    Jim Delaney should be fired. Now.
    Up to $150 for those right field bleacher tickets. Apparently 6 feet of space behind the endzone is required. Somebody didn’t do their job.
    All you would have paid for was tickets to a football game, not good tickets. There’s no such thing as “negligent infliction of emotional distress,” just intentional. Otherwise, fans could sue a team for fielding a bad team or sue the league or officials for a controversial call that ruined the game.
    With all of the outcry about how college football exploits athletes for profit (much of the outcry is excessive, in my opinion) you’d think that people would applaud the Big Ten and the school for swallowing their pride and making a decision they knew would be embarrassing, rather than exposing their players to danger.
    Virginia Tech’s breaking out different white helmets today against Miami. Kind of interesting that they mock Miami’s normal helmets, except the 2 maroon stripes instead of green.
    link
    link
    Normally I’d say those truncated stripes look stupid, but with the ACC sticker and that damn flag, it kinda works.
    Hokies are sporting a good look today. But seriously, Virginia Tech changes looks more than Oregon.
    Terrific designs from Mr. Hobbs.
    Bucks: Freakin’ sweet. I was going to say, “Freakin’ sweet, except I think it’s a mistake to switch from red to orange,” and then I thought about what hunters actually wear. So not only is this an aesthetically pleasing redesign, but from a marketing/merchandising perspective it’s genius. Real potential to extend the brand into a wider national fan base. A niche fan base, sure, but one that spend a lot of money on branded clothing with the color orange.
    Hawkeyes: Acceptable. Which is about as good as I’ve ever been able to say about a Hawkeyes tweak.
    Seawolves: Inspired. Well, the alternates anyway. I’d quibble with a lot of specific choices made throughout this concept, but the basic thinking that went into it is spot on. Unique but internally consistent, and again some very smart choices from a potential merchandising perspective. Very few real MiLB unis are this well thought out or executed.
    re: bucks
    not a huge fan of that font or the tramp stamp, but the antler pants are freakin genius
    Lose the tramp stamp and I can live with the font. Love the double green and the orange. Great stuff.
    I would agree with the Bucks’ tweaks. Those are actually an improvement on the current product (usually not the case, IMO, with the tweaks unless someone tweaks the Buffalo Bills’ unis).
    As for changing the Iowa Hawkeyes’ logo, I should not that they tried that a few years ago, adding more ruffled feathers to make the Hawkeye look meaner. People raised holy hell about it here in Iowa and they were forced to go back to the current logo. You still see the revised logo on some T-shirts, though.
    And on today’s football game at Wrigley, any bets that this will be the last one ever played there?
    Thanks RS. I debated using red with the two greens for the Bucks, but I thought with the whole deer hunter concept, blaze orange could easily fill the Bradley Center and possibly distract the away team. I mean, who’s used to playing in a sea of blaze orange?
    With the Hawkeyes, my main goal was to make them “not the Steelers”. The uniforms aren’t particularly special, but there’s only so much one can do with a team like Iowa. I wouldn’t dressed them up like Oregon.
    As for the SeaWolves, if you look at the current logo, there really wasn’t anywhere to go but up. I’ve actually been working on a Jupiter Hammerheads concept with a similar wraparoud alternate.
    Thanks to everyone who took the time to look at them, and/or comment. And thanks to Phil and Paul for giving me a place to show my designs.
    Very inaccurate information about Boise State and their orange uniforms. You said it was the first time they wore orange uniforms since the blue turf was installed, very untrue. Boise State wore orange as their primary uniform when the turf first went in in 86 (very first game against Humbolt State they wore orange). They also wore orange in the early 90’s for a couple of years. They brought back the orange in 97 and wore them for every game that season and wore them for the first 2 home games in 98 before switching to blue. They had worn blue every home game since 98 until last night. That was the first time that they had ever gone all orange, but not the first time in orange on the blue.
    Sorry, didnt realize that someone had already brought it to your attention, but it was from a bastard vandal fan though so screw him.
    It has been fun listening to the pundits second guess the Wrigley Rules – “Why don’t play north-south like the Bears used to? Its a farce!!!”
    Well, as Phil has shown, one corner of the south endzone had to be trimmed because of the visitor’s dugout.
    These shots from Gayle Sayers’ 6 touchdown game show that the north endzone wasn’t much better.
    link
    link
    In one corner literally ends one inch from the brick wall- no padding!!!
    link
    In addition to that, I read somewhere that modifications to the stadium since 1970 have shortened that dimension – addition of box seats along the first base side?
    Pretty nice looking tickets for the Notre Dame-Army game at Yankee Stadium.
    The anti-counterfeiting device does ruin the look a bit.
    link
    And no, they are not my tickets. I procured the image from someone’s twitter posting.
    In reference to last night’s game, Fresno State also changed up their away uniforms. Instead of wearing all white like they normally do, they wore White Jersey, Red Pants, and White Trim.
    Missed opportunity at the ND-Army game. Both teams could have gone with 1946 throwbacks (Army in black with the gold/gray/gold sleeve stripes, ND with bright emerald green) and we’d have had a color on color game.
    Typo on the last link… “Miama” instead of Miami… Sorry to point it out. Love the info today, nothing on those faked NFL uni’s though? I know they were mentioned before but I never saw much of anything about them…
    that’s not a typo…i like to write miami as “miama”…thanks for pointing it out tho
    as far as the faked unis — paul & i were both tipped to those like a week ago and neither of us thought they deserved play on here — although i actually thought about doing a post on it…for about 2 seconds
    That link is why I brought it up to begin with =bg=. I just didn’t know if UW had done a more in depth (good) story on them…
    Great tweaks, one and all, but Bowen is blowin’ me away with those Seawolves alts:
    link
    Thanks, Mr. Hobbs, and thanks to the others as well.
    Not sure if any of y’all have seen this before but, logo creep on the announcer’s gloves??? Mark Jones had the allstate logo on the back of his hands….
    I didn’t notice, I was too busy looking at their cool throwback microphones.
    I’m not supposed to say this, but I kind of like Miami’s alternate unis. That is a sweet shade of green on the helmets.
    Does Boise State ever play a road game? Ever?
    They sure got a favorable call right before the half on a phantom pass interference. Not that it mattered. But it might’ve helped with momentum. And I tuned in a few weeks ago, and Boise got the benefit of a call in that game, too. As they did with numerous calls toward the end of that Va Tech game.
    I get the sense that there’s some force that WANTS them to win out. Vegas oddsmakers, maybe?
    Oddsmakers don’t care who wins if they’re good. Only that their books are balanced so that an equal amount is bet on both sides. That’s why point spreads exist, to equalize the amount bet on both sides. The bookie makes money no matter who wins in that instance.
    And since 2000, Boise State has played 50 road games and 67 home games (going 66-1, mind you).
    “Both Illinois and Northwestern did significant due diligence over the past 18 months..”
    Disagree, Mr. Delaney.
    “Army vs. Notre Dame in New Yankee Stadium. But nobody cares about that one.”
    Disagree, Mr. Hecken. Even without any teams, this looks awesome: link
    Not a big fan of either team, but they should make it look even more awesome.
    “As far as uniforms go, I really will need to see this one in action”
    Agree, Mr. Hecken. I think Miami will look better than they normally do. I know, that’s not saying much…
    Judging by the pictures from last night’s win over North Texas, Kansas has acquired some basketball shorts with piping the same width as on the jerseys. Our long national nightmare is over!
    From yesterday, which I missed:
    “Several readers have submitted link. Now, Rafael Santo Domingo did play for the Reds in ’79, but I have a hard time believing this was really his jersey – look at that cover-up nameplate underneath the letter. I don’t think the Reds ever sent anyone out onto the field with anything like that.”
    Oh, how they forget. I sent link to Paul ages ago, and he actually ran it in a ticker. That’s from 1988, if memory serves.
    link from John Harkes of DC United in MLS’ very first game in 1996.
    just got back in after a long day…haven’t seen a single play of football, but i do have the miama game on…
    my god…those may be the most bew-tee-ful helmets i’ve ever seen
    from the neck down…not so much
    if that gets anywhere the “5” i’ll be asking for resume submissions for a new 5 & 1 guy
    just sayin
    Jimvilk, I’m driving back from the colorado/k state game, good unimatchup. Bad game result tho.
    JTH, wrigley doesn’t look the same as when we were there. Dumb. Anybody could have plopped that field down in autocad and known what happens months ago. The late decision, just dumb.
    Phil, “Miama” is in Oklahoma.
    You posted that while DRIVING? Aren’t there laws against this sort of thing?
    They should have just set it up as a 98-yard field. Woulda been kinda cool to see a big number 49 at midfield.
    Iowa State’s not a bad look, but it’s strange seeing the Cyclones in gold, but Mizzou is in all white.
    Checking in north of the border, where both Montreal and Toronto are wearing black “PB” helmet stickers for the late Pat Burns. Haven’t seen it yet, but heard about them in the pre-game.
    at the very least that’s a special uniform.
    What does orange have to do with them?
    I do kind of like the bear paw print on the back of the helmet.
    Occasionally, those pro combat uniforms have a decent idea, I like the big paw print as well on those Montana uniforms.
    The color orange used to be on the Grizzlies uniforms along with yellow back in the day. Montana, like Idaho, used to have a yellow helmet.
    Anyone seeing the disaster in College Park, MD right now? Maryland is sporting quite possibly the ugliest football uniform in history, and I try to say this without hyperbole. All black, with digital camouflage side stripes up the pant leg leading to a “bra strap” of the same camo. Numbers and helmet decals are also camo. If this was discussed earlier this week, I apologize, but this HAS to end. The University of Maryland should be embarrassed that these uniforms are representing their institution. Just awful.
    Oh man, holy …..those Terps unis indeed have to be the worst uniform EVER worn in NCAA history. Like they took the BFBS and raped some link
    As a Terp fan, I personally don’t care what the uniforms look like. All that matters is that they beat FSU. Sure, the uniforms aren’t the greatest, but it’s for a good cause and just a one time deal, not a regular thing.
    I do believe in this instance that the uniforms intentions were good, yet left most of those Terps players feeling uninspired. Simply, because the design execution was turrible.
    Then again, maybe they were trying too hard, thinking we better not lose in these fuckin’ ridiculous looking unis?
    These are the same unis worn by Utah and Texas Tech a couple of weeks ago. Their only redeeming feature is that they are to auctioned off after the game and 100% of the money to be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
    I know we’re more interested in what the players wear, and not what fans could buy, BUT:
    IceJerseys.com, a fantastic Montreal-based operation, has the Caps’ and Pens’ Winter Classic jerseys for sale. Pictures of the respective replicas show a price of $140 CAD (ball park, but a bit high), a Reebok vector on the left wrist (very normal for replicas), some printing on the inside collar (so it’s not just the new Rangers’ third anymore), and [drum roll] NO MORE STUPID EXTERNAL SIZE TAGS ON THE BOTTOM! Anybody know if this is a sign of things to come? Boy, it would be great if Reebok finally got a clue in that respect.
    At the very least, it’d be nice if more people would realize that it’s incredibly easy to remove those jock tags.
    Paul’s new ESPN column is up right now. But here’s the catch, at the top it says “Originally Published: November 23, 2010”, some three days hence. Here’s the link:
    [Link Removed By Request from Paul]
    Sorry — I just spoke to Paul and he asked me to remove the link — there may have been a mistake by the fellas in Bristol; the column still needs to be updated
    Per Paul, “It’s not for public consumption yet”
    pay no attention to the man behind the curtain and all that…
    I had a feeling Paul would say that. To respect his date of release, I promise not to reveal any spoilers. But good article, as usual ;-) .
    Ugh, this game is a snoozer. Notre Dame, new Yankee Stadium & Regis Philbin: all part of the problem; not the solution.
    i can’t keep giving you “quote of the day” despite the obvious qualifications ;)
    I’m going out on a limb here and saying that for the first time in the history of the NHL, two goalies named Cor(e)y are playing in the same game.
    Corey Crawford started for the Blackhawks and Cory Schneider has just come in for the Canucks to relieve Roberto Luongo.
    Also, is there an “elite” goalie who gets pulled more often than Luongo?
