I Bet This Never Happened to Peter Jennings

jennings.jpg

That’s Dan Jennings — not Jeninngs — of West Virginia, whose NOB was misspelled in yesterday’s game against Davidson. I suppose the lettering could have been done by a local stitcher, but I prefer to blame the manufacturer.

New ESPN column today. It mostly covers stuff that steady readers of the blog already know about, but there’s one new segment that I think you’ll enjoy. Link coming soon. has been bumped to next week. — Paul

Collector’s Corner, by Brinke Guthrie

We’re a little more than a month out from Christmas, but the bidding can get fierce as the holidays get closer, so don’t delay — bid today! Here’s our latest batch of eBay picks:

• Here’s a classic Big Red Machine Starter jacket.

• I love this Eagles throwback replica, especially with the small NFL shield on the shoulder.

• Ditto for this 1970s Brownies pennant. Looks like it’s been around but is still in great shape!

• Speaking of Cleveland, check out this Browns doll. [Looks better suited to being a chew toy. — Pl]

• Love this 1950s Pirates sticker all day long.

• There’s something endearingly dinky about this MacGregor Packers helmet.

• And here’s the real prize of this week’s batch: an MLB lunch Thermos!

Seen something on eBay that you think would make good Collector’s Corner fodder? Send your submissions here.

Cross-dressing, continued: Yesterday’s entry on cross-sport equipment prompted several readers to contribute additional examples, including Joey Mullen’s football neck roll, Peter Cech’s rugby headgear, Calvin Murphy’s hockey helmet (anyone know the full story behind that one?), Alex Ovechkin’s NFL undershirt, and cricket players wearing motorcycle helmets. And while this photo isn’t ideal, it appears to show an Atlanta Hawk wearing a hockey helmet (maybe with a facemask attachment, although it’s hard to tell), circa 1976.

In addition, early hockey goalies wore cricket pads, and Martin Brodeur has just started wearing NBA arm pads (scroll down to the fifth graf).

(My thanks to all contributors, including Ryan Connelly, Matthew Dowell, James Robertelli, Jim Herrmann, Matt Beahan, and James Vetter.)

Uni Watch News Ticker: The guys at the scorers’ table cannot be happy about UAB’s road uni numbers, which made their first appearance on Wednesday night. This led to so much chatter on message boards and such that UAB assistant coach Donnie Marsh issued an apology yesterday, and also revealed that he’s the one who designed the uniform. Not sure which is more surprising: that this design actually made it onto the court, or that an assistant coach created it (big thanks to Kent Reichert and Ben Teague). ”¦ When the Pens wore their powder blue throwbacks the other night, Marc-Andre Fleury unveiled blue-accented pads for the occasion (with thanks to Mike Viola). ”¦ Matt Philpott was looking through some photos he took at a Yanks/Tigers Negro Leagues throwback game back on 6/8/96 and noticed that both sides were wearing adjusta-strap caps. Additional views here and here. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: LaSalle is another team that’s wearing a maker’s mark without the NCAA authentication logo. ”¦ A taekwondo competitor was disqualified the other day for using illegal socks. Video report here (big thanks to Doug Kalemba). ”¦ I used to go crabbing in the Great South Bay all the time as a kid, and I still love eating crabs today, so I’m particularly fond of Ryan Connelly‘s latest DIY project. ”¦ The Iowa Energy — that’s a D-League team — is the latest team going with a jersey sponsorship. ”¦ The Bucks’ “Fear the Deer” slogan has led to a trademark battle (with thanks to Nicholas Honeck). ”¦ The other day I mentioned that LaRon Landry was wearing an Adams-branded chinstrap but I hadn’t been able to find a photo. You can see it in these two close-ups (big thanks to Dániel Jaczkó). ”¦ Hey, check it out — Steve Nash wore Cooperalls (with thanks to Robbie Biederman). ”¦ Tim McNulty notes that the package illustration for the autumn-colored M&M’s shows Red (that’s the main spokescharacter) wearing what appears to be an Auburn football jersey. ”¦ Cool eBay finds: a great 1985 World Series ringer tee and a dynamite basketball warm-up pullover. ”¦ Color Consistency, Vol. 1: South Carolina is working to standardize its shade of red (with thanks to Beau Franklin). ”¦ Color Consistency, Vol. 2: Marshall is looking to standardize its shade of green (with thanks to David Cline). ”¦ Dylan Buell has noticed two unusual things about Indiana State’s basketball uniforms: They use nameplates and they’ve chosen an unfortunate spot for their conference logo patch. ”¦ Bryan Blow reports that South Alabama’s road basketball design has changed from red to blue. ”¦ Not that I thought the Dolans had any dignity to begin with, but the MSG court looked pretty damn embarrassing last night (screen shot courtesy of David Greenwald). ”¦ Not often that you see an NOB with a first initial and a “Sr.” That’s Pierre Allen Sr. of Nebraska (as spotted by Brian Hansen). ”¦ Love the Stanford/Cal illustration accompanying this article (big thanks to Jean Lefebvre). ”¦ Internet petitions rarely accomplish anything, but here’s one calling for the Falcons to make a permanent switch to their throwback uniforms (with thanks to Abe Silk). ”¦ Did you know black was one of Washington‘s team colors? Right, neither did anyone else. ”¦ Very interesting to see that Madden is now showing exposed armpits. Now they just need to shorten those shoulder stripes on the Colts jersey (as noted by Jordan Tripp). ”¦ Several readers have submitted this huge NOB. Now, Rafael Santo Domingo did play for the Reds in ’79, but I have a hard time believing this was really his jersey — look at that cover-up nameplate underneath the letter. I don’t think the Reds ever sent anyone out onto the field with anything like that. ”¦ Concordia University’s baseball team will be wearing camouflage uniforms on Sundays next year (with thanks to Concordia alum William Schultz). ”¦ If you’ve been dying to design John Wall’s sneakers for the NBA All-Star Game, here’s your big chance. ”¦ I’ll be traveling for the next three days. Phil will handle the weekend, as usual, and I’ll have something for Monday, although it might not be our usual MMUW football roundup — depends on how a few things shake out. Either way, have a great weekend and I’ll see you next week.

    I’m still amazed the Tigers got the Yankees to play along with a Negro Leagues turn-back-the-clock game. Other than the patriotic themed caps the Yankees have been required to wear in recent seasons, has there been any other occasion of the Bombers wearing a different uniform or cap at home or on the road.

    I didn’t submit this photo to Paul because it didn’t really show the back of a cap, but here’s a look at what the Yanks were wearing that day…

    link

    I saw pics of this game a few months ago and I was shocked that I didn’t even have a vague recollection of it taking place……and I’m a die hard Bombers fan….

    Very well might have been, Scott. I remember a blimp circling the stadium all game long, and God knows the old PASS network out of Detroit wasn’t flying one of those back then!

    The best I’ve got is up a couple comments from this, Jonathan.

    You can get a pretty clear look at the cap they were wearing, and between the pitcher warming up in the bullpen and the coach standing next to him, get a decent idea of what the uniform looked like.

    Check out Bill Henderson’s MLB style guide in the yankees section for the best picture of the black yankees road jersey and the font style used on the # on the back and “yankees” on the front.

    great pics matt! you’ve got a great eye and photo lense or at least someone inquiring about that game ;P

    The funny thing is, the “Fear the Deer” campaign is a direct rip off of the original “Fear the Turtle” motto from my alma mater University of Maryland. It seems now that any team with a less then threatening mascot has used the Fear the… motto.

    “Fear the Deer” is ridiculous – tho except of the constant prospect of smashing into one with my car. Fear the Deer wandering into my yard & getting into my trash? This machoism in sports is getting redundant.

    Let’s not forget Zippy the Akron Zips kangaroo:
    link
    Thankfully she (yep, if there’s a pouch, then she’s a she) doesn’t look as menacing in person:
    link

    That Atlanta Hawks’ photo appears to be a hockey helmet, not a football helmet. Take a look at this photo of Lanny MacDonald: link

    Very similar (though not the exact model).

    Wait, so it extremely possible, probably even likely, that someone else is to blame for the misspelling of Dan Jennings’ surname, but you’re blaming Nike anyway?

    It is actually most likely Nike’s fault. The first set of jerseys for a given season is usually lettered by the manufacturer. Subsequent sets, if needed, are usually lettered locally.

    That’s the factual version. But it’s also just more fun to blame Nike.

    The funny part about the Fear the Deer slogan lawsuit is that the State College Spikes single-A baseball team has been using that slogan pretty
    much since their inception.

    “That Dan Jennings – not Jeninngs – of West Virginia, whose NOB was misspelled in yesterday’s game against Davidson.”

    Amusing that a sentence explaining a typo would itself have a typo in the first word.

    ahhh… paul, you’re a crabber too (still wish you would have snapped a pic or two of the softshell crab sammich you posted about within the past few months. lol)! nice! here’s the back:

    Depressing bit of news from the MLS:

    “…Garber expects to announce a couple more jersey sponsors in the next month or so and says each team in the league will have one in a year.”

    Sigh…

    welll….. the MLS has wanted to emulate the big Euro leagues from inception… i’m surprised it’s taken this long for the official line to ‘come out’.

    Not as disasterous as you say (IMO), maybe because we’ve become assimilated to football teams wearing their sponsors since the mid 1970s with the most famous example: Hamburg ’77 and their famous Hitachi jerseys.

    Now, if the GB Packers or NY Giants come out of the tunnel on a Sunday w/ sponsorship patches…… well then, all hell breaks loose! :)

    MLS tried to be an “American Style” league when it started, with shootouts to settle tie games, a countdown clock, and some seriously goofy team names. And it didn’t work, because casual American sports fans didn’t care, while the millions of soccer fans who live in this country were put off by the changes, and kept on watching their favorite teams from Mexico and Europe.

    I don’t think it’s a coincidence that MLS, after nearly dying in 2002, has become increasingly popular in this country as world soccer traditions have been accepted. And jersey sponsors are a part of that. I know the uni purists can’t stand it, but considering play runs for 45 minutes at a time without commercial breaks, you have to get those sponsorship dollars somehow.

    You bring up some great points, and I agree with all but the last one. They get sponsorship dollars with the ads that are placed next to the scoreboard graphics on TV. They ring the entire field with ads. There’s no need to splash the sponsor logo on a jersey.

    Well, unlike most here, I’ll make a small concession. If you absolutely MUST have a shirt sponsor, at least make the team logo bigger than the sponsor logo. Or make them equal size, but make the team logo prominent.

    Good example is Manchester City’s road jersey.
    link
    Without the sponsor logo, I’d buy that. With it, I’d wear that, but I’m not paying for it.

    Same reasoning as the Rose Bowl – it’s not “The Citi Rose Bowl,” it’s “The Rose Bowl, sponsored by Citi.” Just sounds classier and they have the priorities straight.

    I wasn’t aware that the NBA All-Stars had already been voted in this year. Now I’m not a big NBA fan, but perhaps Reebok could at least wait until the voting even starts to announce this shoe design competition for the game that Wall isn’t technically guaranteed to be in? I know, he’s amazing, it’s a sure thing, yeah I get it. Just sayin’…

    Oh, okay. Like I said, not a big NBA fan, so it seemed a bit arrogant to me. Thanks for the reasoning!

    Speaking of sponsorship, who else saw the ridiculousness that’s the court at Madison Square Garden for the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament (sponsored by a video game manufacturer who no longer produces a college basketball game…their logo appears five times on the floor). It looked more like a European hockey rink than anything, and I’m surprised there weren’t serious issues with players slipping on the approximately five million decals on the court.

    Clemente! Frank Robinson, too, I believe.

    Love that jersey. Been on my “want” list a long, long time.

    —Ricko

    Beautiful Pittsburgh Penguins throwbacks but the goalie should have done it up right with brown leather pads (or at least brown pads with whatever material the pads are made of nowadays – they were leather back when I played goal). And nice to see the Canucks with some traditional looking socks!

    I’ll have to see that Santo Domingo Reds jersey in an actual game pic before I believe that’s authentic…

    -Jet

    Fleury could be getting used to wearing those pads in anticipation of the upcoming Winter Classic since they are doing dark blue-light blue on their WC jerseys. It’s not like they would clash in that uniform.

    Otherwise, they look fine. Brown pads would be nice, though.

    Except that this year’s WC uniforms are using “vintage white”, and Fleury’s bright-white pads would indeed clash.

    Which would be why he’s using them in November and not debuting them on January 1. They should have puck marks and be less bright by the time January 1 rolls around.

    “Color Consistency, Vol. 1: South Carolina is working to standardize its shade of red … Color Consistency, Vol. 2: Marshall is looking to standardize its shade of green” –

    Someone please contact the University of Missouri and tell them this is possible!!!!!!

    That Reds Starter jacket isn’t actually from the BRM era. I know because I owned that exact jacket; bought it new around 1986 or 87. In fact, that may BE my jacket, since I donated it to a thrift store three or four years ago.

    ah yes I know, I had the same jacket- but the BRM did wear a variation of this style back in their heydey.

    I wonder why they squeezed the end zone so tight in right field for this weekend, yet left plenty of space down the third base line at Wrigley.

    True, to move the field back a couple feet, you’d squeeze the “third base” corner, but isn’t it better to squeeze one corner than half of the entire other end zone?

    link

    I have seen the field plenty of times and just noticed that both teams will stand on the same sideline. At least I believe they are.

    Not if you’re taking player safety into consideration and playing the percentages. It’s almost guaranteed that players will going out of bounds in that area of the field whereas there may not be any action at all in the back of the endzone.

    I think you misinterpreted what he was going for.

    Shift the field so that the endzone with NORTHWESTERN written in it is cut off on one corner, thus adding an extra couple of feet between the other endzone and the wall.

    Although, from a safety standpoint, it probably makes both sides dangerous instead of just the one.

    Third base. Duh.

    Yeah, I’d think it would be more dangerous to be closer to the barrier that’s near knee level.

    And now the latest news from Wrigley:

    BIG TEN ANNOUNCES ADJUSTED PLAYING RULES TO ENHANCE
    STUDENT-ATHLETE SAFETY FOR ILLINOIS-NORTHWESTERN GAME AT WRIGLEY FIELD

    Park Ridge, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference announced a series of adjustments to football playing rules in order to enhance student-athlete safety for the Illinois-Northwestern game to be played on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Big Ten worked with both Illinois and Northwestern to review a number of potential rule or field adjustments to provide the safest environment for the student-athletes. The conference requested and received waivers to several NCAA playing rules in the interest of student-athlete safety.

    The following rule changes were determined to be the best of all options and will be in effect for this game only based on the unique layout of the field.

    1) All offensive plays will head toward the West end zone, including all extra points and all overtime possessions.

    2) All kickoffs will be kicked toward the East end zone.

    3) After every change of possession, the ball will be repositioned for the offense to head toward the West end zone.

    4) As a result of a coin toss held by the conference office Friday morning, Illinois will occupy the West team bench in the first half and Northwestern will occupy the West team bench in the second half and for all overtime periods.

    “The health and safety of our student-athletes is of the utmost importance,” said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany. “Both Illinois and Northwestern did significant due diligence over the past 18 months, but after seeing the actual layout of the field, all parties felt that it was appropriate to adjust the rules to further enhance the safety of our student-athletes. Wrigley Field is one of the most historic venues in the country, and playing the Illinois-Northwestern game at this facility will provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans.”

    Switching the benches seems weird. A pain to do at halftime, and not much benefit. Still the same wind direction for everyone.

    It will be nice to see a fair amount of scoring on the west side of that field (for once) without a Cubs pitcher on the mound.

    Bronko Nagurski could not be reached for comment.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    So they don’t even need the goalpost that’s attached to the right field wall.
    I wonder if they’ll be taking it down.
    I wonder if, in planning, they didn’t look at multiple field configurations and decide to go tight with the wall, figuring if it was too close, at least they could have the game only go the one direction.
    In the end it will be the first time I’ve ever seen the “losers walk” playground rule applied to real football.
    P. Allen Sr.? Is there another Allen Sr. on the team? Do either one have a son also playing for the team?
    More “cross-dressing”:
    Didn’t Deion Sanders get fined by the NFL for wearing a Braves cap on the sideline during a Falcons game while he was playing for both teams?
    Lynn Swann wore a black Pirates pillbox cap on the sidelines (he was out with a hamstring injury) at Cleveland October 7, 1979.
    “There’s something endearingly dinky about this MacGregor Packers helmet.”
    My question: when did realism turn the corner relative to replica uniforms and little league uniforms for kids? Has it been driven by the rise of cheaper manufacturing or consumer expectations? Or both. Was there a pivotal moment in the industry around this?
    It’s just fascinating to me how this has evolved from rough to ultra-real over the decades.
    Sometime in the 70s, I think. My mid-70s replica Chiefs helmet was the right shape and had the sticker in the right place.
    However, there was a kid down the street who had a Broncos helmet (properly blue, with stripes and the “D with horse” emblem) shaped like that Packers helmet in the auction.
    Those daggone fan-made Nike NFL unis are all over the twitters this morning… I know that they’re confirmed fake, is there a link I can send people to stating as such?
    No joke, right!
    Even the Indy Star has been sending out pictures of these horrors… it’s just killing me.
    Maybe it’s a good thing. Let these horrible concepts leak out and scare people, and then whatever minor changes Nike might actually make don’t seem so bad.
    A tweet from NFLprguy Brian McCarthy:
    just to clarify, the artist renderings of NFL uniforms floating around ARE NOT from the league or Nike. stand down
    I’d probably get fired from La Salle if I read this and didn’t mention that La Salle is written two words and we’re very particular about it.
    Also, St. Bonaventure has new basketball uniforms with the Nike logo on the shorts and no logo (NCAA or Nike) on the jersey.
    The La Salle thing gets weirder. The team photo has the blue NCAA logo, except for Ruben Guillandeaux, in the middle front row, who is missing both logos.
    link
    But the game jersies don’t have the NCAA logo.
    Its styled on the jersey the same way it is on the University logo. The University style guide is where its very particular about it being two words.
    I’m from Alabama, live less than 45 minutes from the state, and still keep up with most happenings… and I had not seen those UAB uniforms until now. Good Lord, are those things hideous. The color combination and poor choice of black numbers notwithstanding, what about the lettering on the front? I had to pause for a moment to consider whether it really says U”A”B on the front or not. It looks like a backwards 5. They need to fire that assistant coach, stat.
    So were the UAB uniforms authenticated by the NCAA? You know, since they’re so concerned about uniforms being acceptable.
    Straight from the NCAA Basketball Rules 2010-11
    Rule 3, Art. 5-b.-6. The number shall be one single solid color that contrasts the neutral zone and may be bordered by no more than a ½-inch border of any color(s).
    Those black numbers on the UAB roadies don’t contrast the dark green of the jersey’s “neutral zone.” They should be deemed illegal.
    Just because it looks good on a mannequin doesn’t mean it’ll look good on the court (or field). Folks that design these uniforms need to consider those who need to see the numbers working the game (game officials, scorers, statisticians, media members) as well as the fans in the stands.
    I speak from experience as a one-time official, sports writer, sports information staffer and now play-by-play broadcaster.
    This is more of a problem in football (where press box locations and field lighting exacerbate the situation), but I’ve also seen this crop up in baseball (one school had yellow numbers on yellow jerseys contrasted with only a thin black outline).
    Let’s not forget infamous Maple Leafs owner Harold Ballard, who was told by the NHL that his team had to have names on the back of their jerseys. He complied – white letters on the white home unis, blue letters on the blue roadies. Suffice to say the NHL was not amused.
    This has been discussed many, many times on Uni Watch. I’ve never seen any photos in which the lettering was discernible against the background (which was, of course, the point).
    I wonder if Murphy is wearing the helmet of the late 70’s Houston Aeros, since they shared the Summit.
    i’ll betcha Calvin hurt his noodle with a baton exercise gone awry! No images to corroborate but some of my 70’s peeps might back me up on this.
    Kind of unfortunate that you should also have a typo on the first item from “Collector’s Corner, by Brinke Guthrie”
    “Hee’s a classic Big Red Machine Starter jacket.”
    Also, it’s sad to see the once dignified Washington Huskies devolve into a gimmicky joke. Their unfortunate BFBS victory last night pretty much guarantees we’ll be seeing those awful things in the future.
    “Dude, wouldn’t it be cool if, like, y’know, there was football in The Matrix?”
    Yeah, sure would. Uh-huh.
    —Ricko
    Did anyone else notice on the 1985 World Series shirt that the Royals logo is missing the crown and the Cardinals bat is not colored in. I assume because it is not officially an MLB product. Anyone?
    I hear this episode has the top brains at the NFL and NCAA huddling together to consider wider rules changes, such as some sort of system for alternating field direction so that each team spends an equal amount of time contesting each endzone.
    The Wrigley Rules actually kind of make sense: You don’t really need two endzones. In the event of an interception or fumble recovery, you don’t need endzone territory to throw into, you just need a 0-yard line to cross. And since the unidirectional gridiron promises to create new pauses in the game while the ball is moved to the mirroring side of the 50-yard-line, it would mean more commercial breaks, which surely makes this attractive to the NFL and its network masters. Plus stadiums could be retrofitted to being about 1/6 of the seats closer to the action (though closer to what would be the rear end of the field).
    “it would mean more commercial breaks, which surely makes this attractive to the NFL and its network masters.”
    And would make it even more unwatchable to me.
    I’d rather see shirt sponsors than one more commercial. And I’m no fan of shirt sponsors.
    You absolutely need two of them. The endzone isn’t only for scoring touchdowns. It’s also for safeties.
    Hey, do any of you guys know about some new rumored NFL uniforms? Peter King just tweeted about it. I’m totally confused. Haven’t been around lately, curious if you know anything. Thanks!
    Rams Uni guy has a Miami U logo on his shoes. Not sure how that one made it past the designer… Fake?
    Totally legitimate, because it’s on the internet.
    This is clearly how all 32 NFL teams will look next season.
    Duh, stop being so gullible.
    Nike’s contract doesn’t kick in until 2012, so this is clearly how all 32 NFL teams will look in the year AFTER next season.
    albert | November 19, 2010 at 9:27 am |
    Love his comment. “I went a little too “Phil Knight” this time” on the UAB jersey.
    He outdid Phil Knight. That’s just horrible.
    And that UAB font…where have I seen that before?
    link
    Yeah, those are stunningly bad. Why bother having numbers at all? I really do want to know how an assistant coach ends up designing the team’s uniform.
    That “assistant coach” has been around for a long time, and is possibly the most respected coach in the program, if not the school.
    Aside from that, who do you think comes up with the uniform design, exactly? You think Nike has a different person for each team for each sport or something?
    Regarding the Atlanta Hawks player in the helmet, that’s Joe C. Meriweather in a game played 20 November 1976. No idea why he wore the helmet – as with the Calvin Murphy picture, I’d speculate it was down to some kind of head/facial injury.
    link on Joe Engel. Supposedly in a Washington Nationals/Senators uni, most likely from his first stint in Washington from 1912-1915, though the cap and the lack of pins don’t conform to Okonen. The contrast placket is correct, though.
    Check Okkonen again. Contrast placket is correct for 1910-11. No block “W”s on the sleeves yet but a fancy block “W” on the left chest. Could very well be a spring training photo using leftover uniforms from the past season. I’m guessing the striped undershirt was not standard issue.
    Not quite the same conditions as tomorrow’s Wrigley Field game, but a Browns-Broncos game in 1989 was “highlighted” by a change of sides, thanks to the Dawg Pound.
    The Browns won, 16-13, on a last-second 48-yard field goal by Matt Bahr. The kick barely cleared the crossbar at the closed end of Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The Browns should have driven towards the open end, but referee Tom Dooley made both teams switch sides of the field with over 12 minutes to go in the fourth quarter due to the Broncos’ being hit with debris from the Dawg Pound.
    “They were throwing dog biscuits and they threw one egg,” Dooley said after the game. “They threw a double A battery that hit me in the head and after we got them calmed down, I walked behind the huddle and they continued to throw things.
    “After they were ready to play, they threw a rock about 2 1/2 inches in diameter and they threw another egg which hit (guard Keith Bishop), and they threw another egg which hit in the huddle as John (Elway) was calling the play. They threw one more double A battery and I stopped it. I went to the other end.”
    At least bring back the orange. Minute Maid Park should be filled with orange, after all, not brick red.
    The old astronaut grounds crew would be good, too.
    PTI show talking about those “new” Nike uniforms that have been circulating in the next segment
    Interesting that Kornheiser and Simmons both agreed that it was Nike planned leak to gauge how fans felt about the uniforms.
    I highly doubt that Nike would ever even get the opportunity to do an overhaul of team uniforms like that. The only reason that Nike does crap like that to colleges is because Nike has the upper hand in that relationship and can basically tell any school what to wear. In other words, “this is how it’s going to be, take it or leave it. But if you leave it, you’re leaving millions of dollars on the table and, well, we both know you’re not going to do that. So the only real option you have is to take it.”
    The NFL is already a multi-billion dollar industry without Nike. And it will continue to be a billion-dollar industry with or without Nike. Nike is not going to go into Roger Goodell’s office and dictate any terms to him. Nike is not going to go to any individual team and tell them what design to wear on their uniforms.
    This whole “OMG WHAT IS NIKE GOING TO DO TO NFL UNIFORMS” hand-wringing is a whole non-issue.
    JESUS FREAKING CHRIST…
    sorry
    for the first and LAST TIME
    the nike photoshops are fakes
    stop posting about them, please
    thank you
    The Broncos have worn an orange jersey before, don’t know about solid orange, it may be a first.
    When was the last time Florida, Syracuse, and Tennesse wore all orange?
    I swear that orange looks different with other BSU unis. I live in the Boise area, so I see it A LOT, but that shade of orange seems different to me. Maybe just because there is so much of it. But yeah, that template doesn’t help any either.
    all i know is YOU love all orange — but this better NOT find it’s way into the “5” portion of the “5 & 1”
    thank GOD they didn’t wear their pro combat helmet (although, i can’t imagine it looking any worse than the regular lid)
    and yes virginia, one benefit of these unis is that now we can actually see the team when they’re between the goal lines
    If Boise reaches the BCS title game, I’d like to see the Broncos wear the blue jersey/orange pant combo with the pro combat helmet. The pro combat jersey and pants should be discarded.
    Any other week I’d consider messing with you, but this week is stacked. I’ve never had a week with eight, count ’em, eight potential number ones. And that’s not counting any surprise alts.
    The gray jersey would be fine if it were symmetrical.
    And orange.
    The alt pants are better than the butt-striped horrors they’re wearing now.
    “If Boise reaches the BCS title game…”
    im hearing from more and more places that unless auburn loses something like 60-0 in the iron bowl, they are almost a LOCK over tcu and boise, even if both are undefeated
    better get ready for a oregon/auburn matchup in glendale
    the BCS-bias is laughable, but if they pull that crap again this year, that will be unconscionable
    how many times does boise have to go undefeated for them to get some respect?
    If Boise and TCU go undefeated and don’t make it, and if Oregon or Auburn lose one and make it, I’m not watching.
    A little more on the New York Rangers thirds that debuted the other night… I was taking a look at the photo gallery on the Rangers’ website and noticed a few things:
    link (if it doesn’t directly go to the right gallery, look for “Rangers 2, Boston Bruins 3 at The Garden November 17, 2010”)
    1. The pants shells are laid out beneath the hanging uniforms in the locker (photo 1).
    2. Henrik Lundqvist doesn’t appear to be wearing the shell (photo 4, photo 35) – oddly enough, he’s not the only goalie that’s done that this year!
    3. The nameplates are definitely radially arched (photo 5, photo 30). It’s very, very slight, though, but just noticeable enough.
    4. I think they’re starting to grow on me… like a fungus. Where’s my Tinactin?
    Following up, there’s actually a second gallery from that game, simply labeled “Rangers vs. Bruins”. (No idea why they don’t just combine the two into one large gallery…)
    Anyway, in the second gallery, there are shots of Brandon Dubinsky of the Rangers, where it looks like he’s wearing a completely different set of pants beneath his shell – it looks like either dark blue, or possibly black? Strange.
    I just caught something on the La Ron Landry chinstrap. It’s a six-point chin strap, which I believe is only made by Adams. Most chinstraps are two- or four-point.
    I don’t like these Boise State unis, but I don’t exactly hate them, either.
    Would it kill them to wear their white pants with these jerseys, though (or with the blue ones, for that matter)?
    Some gray pants might look pretty decent, too.
