It all started back on Oct. 5, when Robert Marshall sent me the photo shown at right and asked, “What the heck is that on this Kentucky Wildcat?” I had no idea, so I forwarded the photo to Hemet Hut honcho Curtis Worrell. He said the jaw contraption looked familiar but he couldn’t turn up anything definitive. So I ran the photo in the next day’s Ticker and that was that.
Now, with the help of several readers, I’ve pieced together the story behind that photo, and it’s a good one. Bear with me while I explain.
The breakthrough came when Curtis Worrell figured out that the player in question did not play for Kentucky. He was looking through The Sports Illustrated College Football Book and found these photos, along with a caption that identified the player as Frank Sinkwich of the 1941 Georgia Bulldogs.
I ran those photos in Wednesday’s Ticker. That prompted Becky Taylor to do some additional research, and she came up with a wealth of information:
• Sinkwich was originally slated to wear a different kind of facial protection. That facemask was the subject of considerable curiosity (check out the last graf for a priceless example of 1940s sportswriting), but Sinkwich refused to wear it.
• If you look at that last clipping, you’ll see it says that Sinkwich wore “a chin strap of metal, covered with leather.” That is apparently what we see in these photos. Sinkwich wore that fairly simple rig on Oct. 11 against Ole Miss. With his jaw wired shut, he had to take oxygen during the game. (A side note: Two days before this game, Sinkwich apparently received headgear help from Tennessee’s equipment manager, although it isn’t clear if the “brace” referred to in that article is the facemask rig that Sinkwich ultimately refused to wear or the reinforced chinstrap he eventually did wear.)
• A week later, on Oct. 18, Sinkwich upgraded to the larger jaw sling against Columbia. Judging by the uniforms, that’s the same game shown in the Sports Illustrated photos that Curtis Worrell found.
And while Becky was digging up all that great info, reader Brent Hardman was digging into his photo archives to find these photos of Sinkwich’s actual helmet, which he took a few years ago at the Butts-Mere building on the Georgia campus.
But here’s the thing: If you look at the forehead and crown areas on that helmet, you can see it’s clearly not the same helmet Sinkwich was wearing against Columbia, or in this shot (also on display at UGA), or in the photo that started this whole ball rolling.
In fact, the helmet on display at UGA doesn’t match up with any of the old Sinkwich pics. Which means he either wore more than one sling-equipped helmet or else the one on display is bogus. I suspect someone will dig up the answer to that one shortly.
San Francisco treat: Back in Monday’s Ticker I reported that something had been slightly amiss with Edgar Renteria’s helmet decal in Game 6 of the NLCS. I was watching intently to see if it had been corrected in the first game of the World Series, but the camera never provided a clear enough shot.
Last night, however, it became clear that the decal issue persists. And given Renteria’s performance so far in the Series, I think it’s safe to say they won’t be fixing it anytime soon.
Sponsor Shout-Out: As you may have noticed at the top of the left sidebar, the cool autumn weather has brought Stewart & Strauss Varsity Jackets back into our advertising fold. As a varsity/letterman jacket collector myself (I’ll feature some of my jackets in an upcoming entry), I’m particularly happy to have S&S on board. They offer a wide variety of stock designs and a near-unlimited range of customization options, genuine felt lettering, and worldwide shipping. If you’re a fan of Glee, you’ve already seen S&S product, because they provide the jackets on that show. I hope you’ll check out their site.
One person who’s already checked it out is reader Dwayne White, who was monkeying around with the customization features and came up with this (I’ll cut him some slack for misspelling my surname and leaving out the space between “Uni” and “Watch”). As it happens, the S&S folks have mentioned about the possibility of creating a Uni Watch jacket, assuming there’s enough interest in it. If you think you’d consider purchasing such a product, give me a shout so we can gauge the degree of interest. Thanks.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Remember when a little birdie told me the Penguins’ Winter Classic uniforms would look like this? Turns out he was right. Love the fat, scarf-clad pengy, like the numerals, not so sure about those stripes. Someone has suggested this revision, which I agree would be an improvement. ”¦ KNBR, the Giants’ radio flagship, had just a few uni details wrong on its web site the other day. “FNOB for Lee, incorrect font for both teams, and oh yeah, we’ll give Nolan Ryan’s retired #34 to Cliff Lee,” says Stuart Greenlee. “Jeez.” Indeed. ”¦ Chris Wright reports that Ole Miss will wear white at home against Auburn this Saturday. “The Rebels are celebrating the 1960 team, and the rumor is that they will be wearing light blue helmets like they did in the past,” he says. ”¦ Yogi Combs notes that the Thunder’s court artwork, which I posted yesterday, includes the Ford Center wordmark, but that mark isn’t on the actual court. “The arena was originally named the Ford Center when it opened but has since put its naming rights back up for auction, so it is currently operating under the name ‘Oklahoma City Arena,'” he says. “I guess that isn’t catchy enough to put on the court.” ”¦ Similarly, Mike Delia notes that the Celtics floor artwork doesn’t include the NBA logo at the check-in line. ”¦ Peter Nash has identified another jersey in the Hall of Fame’s collection that may not be authentic. ”¦ Canton McKinley High School in Ohio has a black jersey, made by Russell, and a red jersey, made by Nike. Aside from the two different manufacturers, the lowercase “c” is styled differently on the two jerseys (good spot by Tom Pachuta). ”¦ I don’t care about sneakers, but I was still really fascinated by this post about how to spot fake Nikes (which I learned about via No Mas). ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Here’s the best Halloween costume of the year, hands down. ”¦ With all due respect to Brinke, Mike Hinkel has come up with the eBay find of the week: a WFL coaster set! ”¦ There’s a new baseball league in West Texas called the Pecos League, and Jeff Meyers found some mock-ups of their uniforms. ”¦ New court design for Florida State (with thanks to Cameron Norris). ”¦ Buncha cool hockey submissions from Jake Doyle, including Brett Hull in Cooperalls; Hull again, this time in a Blues “Alumni” jersey (do other teams do this?); a Nordiques jersey with a very unusual “1”; a good shot of the mid-1920s Pittsburgh Pirates sweater; and some spectacular Saskatoon Crescents shots (that one on the right really needs to be revived as a throwback, no?). ”¦ Third jersey schedules are now available for the Blackhawks, Avs, Bruins, Wild, and Kings. ”¦ The Dolphins are planning an “aqua-out” for Nov. 18, although it isn’t clear that the team will necessarily wear solid aqua that day (as noted by Kurtiss Dilley). ”¦ The state of Illinois is now offering Blackhawks license plates (with thanks to Jimbo Huening). ”¦ If you go to this site and click on the swoosh tab, you’ll see Iowa State’s football equipment manager giving a tour of the team’s facility (with thanks to Matt Strum). ”¦ Nike has made some pretty rad-looking new soccer shoes for Cristiano Ronaldo (with thanks to Alberto Sanchez). ”¦ Yesterday was “Wear Your Team’s Logo Day” at the school where Marty Hick teaches, so he got with the program. I ran the photo super-big so you can see the little Cards helmets on his necktie — a nice touch. ”¦ New hoops uniforms for Portland (with thanks to Leondrus Thornton). ”¦ Dan Cichalski reports that Notre Dame will be wearing a memorial decal this Saturday for a student who died earlier this week. ”¦ Neon signage and pork: two great tastes that taste great together. Baroness Karen McBurnie tipped me wise to that one, which is located in Queens. I’ll be making a visitation soon. ”¦ Mako Mameli found some awesome photos of the Illinois Athletic Club. That shot’s from 1924 — is that chest logo awesome or what? Here it is again, on the club’s 1919 basketball team. ”¦ Very odd officiating situation in last night’s Caps/Wild game, as AJ Brandt explains: “Apparently the airlines lost linesman Mike Cvik’s equipment, but another linesman, Thor Nelson, was on layover at the MSP airport, so he taxied over and joined the game in the second period. The weird thing is since Nelson was on layover, they couldn’t find his equipment either, so he used extra equipment the Wild had on hand. Cvik wasn’t able to use that equipment because he’s 6’8″, while Nelson is a more traditional build.” ”¦ Two more NBA alternates have leaked: Hornets in gold and Timberwolves BFBS. While these won’t be officially unveiled for another month or so, I can confirm that they are legit.
Were any of the uniforms Barry Halper provided to the Hall of Fame legitimate? I’d be more impressed with Hauls of Shame if he were finding fake memorabilia that WASN’T from Halper’s collection.
The Las Cruces team in the Pecos League played last year in those uniforms as part of the Continental League, so that’s not really a mock-up. It will be interested to see if this new league gets off the ground and gets those jerseys onto the field.
Have y’all already seen this??

Addressed in yesterday’s Ticker.
Readers should know that Stewart & Strauss runs a monthly link. I’ve been entering every month since 2003; gonna win one of these decades. Mainly it’s just fun to design a new jacket every month to enter into the drawing.
Paul,
I created these months ago, emailed ’em to ya AND posted them on the UW Facebook page:

I’m might be in the process of DIY’ing one in a size 40….
Terence M.K.
I am reading a very strong aura around the Illinois Athletic Club. Those young men were destined for greatness!
Fabulous.
That 1920’s Pirates sweater is AMAZING!
Love it…
Son of Fabulous. But let’s not forget those Saskatoon Crescents.
There was another NHL Pirates sweater which had the same word
mark as the 1997 baseball Pirates jersey. It had the “P” and “S” larger than the rest of the word.
I noticed two zombie logos (logos risen from the dead) for the Pecos league. The Oklahoma/Arizona Outlaws and the Montreal Expos. As with real zombies, they seem to have decomposed a little.
That Las Cruces logo is not the Oklahoma/Arizona Outlaws’ logo, but that of the Dallas Desperados of the defunct Arena Football League. (Note that the current league by that name is a different entity.)
And the logo for Leones de Juarez seems to be a one-colour version of the USFL’s Michigan Panthers’ logo.
Actually… some googling has revealed that logo to be the logo used on the Mercury Cougar, only in an oval instead of a circle, and mirrored.
Regarding the new FSU court: take a look at what look to be new Seminole uniforms.
link
Number 24 has a swoosh and the certification tag thingy on his jersey. So does the guy standing to his left (our right), but the rest of the team doesn’t, yet they appear to be wearing the same template. Odd…
That Sinkwich helmet looks like it was modeled after something Jay Leno would have worn.
Are there any pictures from the Caps/Wild game?
re: Dolphins Aqua
It wouldn’t surprise me if they wore the all aqua jersey. In 2002 they played the bears in a Monday night game and they did wear aqua on aqua. I can’t find a picture, but it is noted in this game recap: link It says it was the first time they’ve worn that combo and I can confirm they haven’t worn it since.
Well, as if I needed another excuse not to watch a Bears game, the Dolphins in aqua over aqua would certainly be enough to drive me away from my TV on November 18th.
Luckily, there are still plenty of folks outside the Chicago & Miami viewing areas who don’t get the NFL Network so they won’t be subjected to this eyesore of a game.
I like the all aqua for the Fins… and I usually don’t like all dark with a white helmet – but I think it works for them. It matches the logo quite nicely. It makes far more sense than the alt orange jersey anyway.
of course you do ;)
and james…stop making excuses
Here’s a photo:

That first football helmet looks like the Y wing pilots helmet from Star Wars

Now that’s just silly. Really, link?
Okay, found a pic of the Dolphins aqua on aqua: link
That’s a tour of Iowa STATE — Iowa STATE Cyclones. Big 12 (10)
Ditto. Go Hawks!
Mea culpa. Now fixed.
At the beginning when the equipment director introduces himself there are yellow jersey tops in the background. Could Iowa State be planning a “secret” alternet game this year?
I’ve never seen a helmet like the one on the team playing Canton McKinley – truncated stripes with the uni number underneath the stripes.
Agreed. I’d be interested to see more of that helmet.
It looks like they were playing the Hoover Vikings. This is the best pic of the rest of those stripes that i could find. link
Picture 36 of that gallery gives a really good look at the back of that helmet, plus one helmet that looks like it has a T on it?
More helmet news. This picture (link) shows a kid with a white cross on the back of his helmet. What is going on at this school?
link
That is North Canton Hoover, and judging from the McKinley picture they’re an adidas school. They used to have nice shoulder stripes, but not any more.
Actually, they’re a Russell school, and those shoulder stripes look just like everyone else’s. There’s probably more stripe on those jerseys than there are on most.

Brilliant!
it’s almost hallowe’en…it’s friday…and the giants won the pennant
yup
THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT!
Sorry, couldn’t help myself.
thank you mr. hodges
Rad, Paul?
Really? Those Nike Vapors are the most hideous cleats I’ve ever seen.
FWIW, the new collar for the Sixers looks horrendous!
So’s the team. Perfect together.
Some high school football uniform trickery:

there’s no way that can be legal…
Nor should it be.
The Illinois Athletic Club logo is a version of the Chicago municipal device. The logo pops up all around on the city on public buildings, manhole covers, city vehicles, etc.
link
I really wish the NCAA would do something about the size of center court logos instead of cracking down on jersey designs.
I think the FSU logo is great but link.
Of course, if you ask me, link, so whatever.
Sorry, I had to go finish puking. This is much better. link
must be hella confusing, what with all the potential targets and all
That eyesore is much better? How many different logos and wordmarks do you need? I’ll take the ‘Noles court over the one in Mackey arena.
The comments posted by purdue fans the last couple days have confirmed something I’ve suspected for quite some time.
Sorry, you’re both wrong. Haven’t been there yet, but hopefully this year I can make it to this much better court:
link
Better? Nah. I could do without the garish red border.
I meant more for the atmosphere. There’s better courts, but that’s the first place that popped in my head. I’ve been wanting to see a game there for years.
Always liked UNC’s court:
link
And I think the future Jim Vilk University court will look like this:
link
I’ll bet this is Phil’s favorite court:

I like Tennessee’s court with the checkerboard baselines as well. Couldn’t find a good shot of the real thing, but apparently it’s popular on the pastry circuit:

Why would you consider the Timberwolves’ new jerseys BFBS? Haven’t they been wearing black for years now?
I should probably just stop using the term “BFBS.” I didn’t coin it, and I always end up mis-using it.
just because they have had a BFBS alt in their past doesn’t mean their new alt isn’t also BFBS
just because you’re been wearing if for years doesn’t mean it’s not applicable…just look at the mets…they’ve been wearing a BFBS jersey for 10+ years…it’s still just bfbs
At some point, you have to accept the black as a valid team color and no longer “just BFBS”.
I think reaching the world series in 2000 with black included in the color scheme probably helped keep it around longer than it should have. We tend to associate franchise success or failure with a particular type of
uniform, and that plays a role in the decision making process.
Hopefully, the Mets win some day return to the natural color scheme of the Miracle Mets, and the 1986 world champs.
I think keeping it around is more about the black merchandise they sell today than a pennant won a decade ago.
Agreed, the merchandising factor is present, and the winning does help in that regard.
The thing is, the Timberwolves have included black in their uniforms for most of their existence. I can understand calling the Mets BFBS, but the Wolves have made it their own. It is a part of their color scheme.
we’ll agree to disagree
the didn’t have black in their uni at all for their first six seasons, then they added it when it became trendy (actually, they added it after it had been trendy for a while), and they’ve never dropped it
i contend the original use was BFBS; if you want to argue it’s now part and parcel of their uni scheme, fine; to my mind, their colors have always been blue & green (now silver), with black serving at best as an accent (ok, and the home wordmark is black lettering)
whatever, i believe paul used the term correctly…but even now it’s still debatable what actually constituted “BFBS”
Yeah its been a major part of their uniforms and logos since 1996, and they’ve had the black alternates from 98 until they redesigned them a few years ago. The Raptors don’t get criticized for RFRS (Red – it was only in the logos and lettering until 2008) or the Mavericks for NFNS (Navy or whatever they called their darker blue when it was the home uni color after adding it to the scheme). Or will you call the Magic’s black alternates (when or ‘if’ but most likely ‘when’ they break them out) considering black was their main color for the first 5 years of their existence.
Besides there are plenty situations of true BFBS out there (AZ Cardinals, Washington Huskies, Stanford, VT, Miami and Florida College Basketball, TCU, ASU (I’m assuming Nike replaced the white with black for a reason cause you can’t tell it from the maroon on their uniforms once they start sweating), the lion’s old alternate, Tennessee). In this case its a legitimate highlighting of one of their significant colors, and its not liek they ditched them after a few games they had them for about 10 years with somewhat regular rotation.
Georgia alum here. My first inclination would be to say the Sinkwich helmet @ Butts-Mehre, while clearly not the one in all the action photos, may not be bogus. I sort of doubt anyone back in the day would’ve taken the time to fab up a replica just for display purposes. I’ll poke around and see what I can find for Sinkwich as well as other UGa players during his era, if only to satisfy my own curiosity.
As for other bogus items: I don’t know Hauls of Shame guy nor anyone slagging on him, but I was invited by Halper to view his collection with other baseball historians (including at least one who has advertised here) back in the mid-’90s. Several pieces that he claimed to have been authentic Washington Nationals v1.0 items definitely were not, based on my comparisons to period photographs and authenticated items from ex-Nats players and staff. So nothing Hauls of Shame posts re Halper’s collection surprises me.
NHL FYI: The Penguins will be wearing Powder Blues tomorrow night against the Hurricanes (Who will be white-at-home) in Raleigh.
link
I really like that NOLA yellow alternate. Not enough to buy it (also because I don’t really like the NBA), but if that were gifted to me, I’d most certainly wear it.
It will probably sell like there’s no tomorrow. I’m actually surprised the Hornets haven’t made purple more dominant to appeal to LSU fans in New Orleans. Gold should get the job done though. And NOLA works MUCH better than NEW ORLEANS on the front. (Why do I like NOLA, but not PHX for the Suns or ATL for the Hawks? NOLA is actually in our vernacular as a nickname for our city. So much so, we have/had an Emeril restaurant called NOLA. PHX and ATL? Give me a break. NOBODY uses those except for airports and scoreboards.)
I love the yellow alt too. Color, people, color! Color is fun; black is funeral.
I think you nailed it with why some initialisms and nicknames work, and others don’t. Here in DC, a Northern Virginia team could put “NOVA” on its jersey, and everyone would understand it, because we say “NoVA” to describe Northern Virginia. And “DC” has very specific meaning, which is why it works (or anyway worked, if rumors of the new Nats unis are to be believed) for a Washington Nationals cap. Among metro area residents, “DC” means the District itself, as opposed to the Maryland or NoVA suburbs. Yet when speaking to people from outside the area, we often use “DC” to describe the whole region to avoid confusion with the other Washington. Those specific layers of meaning in spoken usage make something like NOLA or DC work in ways that things like PHX don’t.
RS Rogers, where exactly are you?…I have friends in Reston!
Any more info on the supposed Oregon silvers?
When are the Raptors’ YYZ alts debuting?
I’ve heard people say “The ATL” before. I’m not one of them, but I’d say that gets more usage than “PHX.”
I’d rather people use those than using area codes. Now folks in the Akron area say they’re from “The 330.” Is that Reggie Bush’s fault?
link
Or did someone else start that?
Blame it on Ruben Studdard…
link
the term ATL is used a lot (especially in Atlanta) Georgia State even put it in their fight-song. Next time you’re in the Atlanta area turn on a hip-hop/”new music” station and you’ll hear it, either in a commercial, from one of the DJs, or in a song.
PHX is a myestery though, as even if peiple do use that in their vernacular its longer/harder to pronounce than Phoenix (3-syllable vs. 2 syllable, plus phoenix rolls off the tongue were PHX requires you to put emphasis on each lettet). Not that the ATL is any easier to say than atlanta but it is the same length (and is commonly used)and none of the Hawks logos would look good on red (which is a similar case with the suns as their logos are all orange).
I’d rather have ATL than “hotlanta” which was a term that was used a lot back in the 90s and is only now starting to disappear, except when used /in reference to clubs/parties around the city. Of course I’d prefer “The ATL” (otherwise its just an abbreviation put a “the” above it) or even A-Town (mainly because I like saying Peace-Up, A-Town Down! – thanks Luda)

Interesting note …. @Warriors wearing road blue’s tonight at home. Chance for the home fans to see before 1st road game Sunday.

Have you seen this article on referee uniforms? I ran across it when conducting research for my proposed AFL Referee Halloween costume. Even though it is a year old, thought I would pass it along since it mentions Mr. Lukas in the opening paragraph.

Can you really consider the T-Wolves BFBS? It is a team color…
It hasn’t always been a team color.
BFBS isn’t always a bad thing, though. Some teams have pulled it off quite well over the years — but not the T-wolves.

I like the T-Wolves black alts. Much better than that stale blue color of their road uniforms. Black is also a real colorphase of a real Timberwolf.
The aqua over aqua look for the Dolphins is truly horrendous. Looks like a Zest bar with a ping pong ball on top
It would be nice if the BFBS T-Wolves uni still had the pine green to give it some contrast, but noooooo…
same thing i said, only about the new unis in general…
that “M” and “W,” nicely set off in the old unis is now lost
at least teh old bfbs, like you said…had some trees
In that first Sinkwich photo, his teammate #50 seems to be wearing some kind of strange helmet-face contraption.
Apparently it’s not just baseball players who are superstitious:

Some of it’s actually uni-related, too.

i am packing the truck and saturday, driving sunday, unpacking monday, resting tuesday. then since i can’t afford the car trailer, taking a train in the AM wednesday to work the finals of the stats league wednesday night. i will then turn around and drive back to kc that night and sleep next to the wax elvis in a coffin on 70(if memory serves, i hope it still waxes). my train gets in at 3ish wednesday, want to have a beer before i go to work that night at 7? i think i might need one, er billion, we still need to get that last beer before i am a chef.
Shit, I’ve got hockey on Wednesday. And I have enough trouble skating when I’m completely sober.
we can have a soda~pop and a frankfurter then,it’s all the same to me. seriously, you want to like fellow UW’ers, but that isn’t always possible. i can’t say enough good things about you sir, you are really a super fellow who i respect greatly. seriously james, it has been my pleasure to know you, i hope moving out of citystickergo does not end that.
Fuck it. I’m sure Coach Lew won’t miss me.
he’ll be stoked, in fact
this might get posted before the moderation is released, but we are going to have a fair catch competition saturday. we are going to hurl footballs out of the studio window, and see who can catch it from 100 feet in the air in a blind direction from a window. sundown should be the best time for it i think. should be interesting at best since anybody helping was a youppi.
stupid circle does no have grape soda anymore anyway, so it’s miller at the rabbit until you are properly numb, and i go to work, it’s brilliant, not. best picture ever, some gal trowing a “kick” out of my window as i deck you cfl-health care style with an alonzo spellman jersey(if i had one). that would be great.
Thanks, James. Those are cool shots, especially that 2nd one.
And Robert, I was going to say the fair catch competition sounds cool, but I’m a CFL fan and they don’t fair catch, eh?
so if james shows up at dusk someone can throw him a ball out the window as i get a full head of steam from down the alley and we can cfl the hell out of it. as the kids say, loves it.
Well, you gotta give him five yards ‘n all. This isn’t the XFL, don’tcha know.
no way man, canadians are tough, and have great health care, i’ll knock him into next week cfl style.
And they have stronger beer…

Re: Ole Miss v. Auburn
I’m hearing rumors now that Ole Miss will wear grey uniforms against Auburn’s blue. Ole Miss. Grey vs. Blue.
