Throwbacks and Moustaches

By John Ekdahl

There’s something particularly authentic about Carl Pavano’s throwback look during the Indians-Twins game yesterday. The two teams were honoring the Negro Leagues, with the Indians sporting the 1946 Cleveland Buckeyes unis and the Twins wearing the 1909 St. Paul Gophers uniform. Ron Gardenhire was a little worried that the pullover-style tops might effect Pavano’s ritual of changing undershirts between every inning, but joked that he might end up wearing his to the airport because of the franchise’s collared shirt rule.

Something caught my eye during the Red Sox-Yankees game yesterday (Alex B. noted it in the comments as well). Robinson Cano’s jersey had the pink MLB logo on the back. This is the best shot I could find, but it definitely was pink. He wasn’t wearing it the day before. After poking around, I was able to find this shot of Marcus Thames in the dugout from Wednesday afternoon’s game. Just to confuse things even further, the Yankees were on the road this year during Mother’s Day. So, I’m a little perplexed.

For a good laugh, check out Tim Tebow’s new haircut.

Tebow’s haircut makes him look like a link! Somewhat appropriate, even though evangelicals don’t have monks…

If things don’t work out in football, Tebow could step right in to serve as the Padres’ mascot:

My brother went to that game (it was Kenny Lofton bobblehead night as well). If I knew they were wearing those, I would have joined him! Very nice.

Vilk wasn’t kidding last night when he this was about as good-looking a game, uniwise, as has been seen in a long time…

When the desire to be “modern” translates as “stupid”:
Why would a team with such a classic look worn by so many memorable players as the Saskatchewan Roughriders ever CHANGE that look.

What, Ron Lancaster, George Reed, Hughie Campbell and SO many others aren’t a tradition worth hanging onto?

Especially when the Green Riders have a fan base that’s every bit as loyal and committed as, say, Packer fans.

    Just don’t get it.

Agreed, Montreal looks much better as well. I remember their QB started his career with the Las Vegas Posse back during the mid 1990s U.S. expansion. Has Uniwatch ever examined those American teams, uniform-wise? Always felt Sacramento and Baltimore had the sharpest unis.

Riders fans are even more committed. Packers fans wear fake cheese on their heads. Riders fans wear real watermelons on theirs.

Both teams should keep those unis and make them permanent. That game belongs in the “I’d wear that” Hall of Fame.

Real cheese large enough to wear on your head is kinda expensive. Watermelons are cheap.

Based on the 2 pics, Cleveland may not be doing much winning, but they are eating well.

@The Ol Goaler – Evangelicals do not have monks because they don’t we believe we are descended from them ;-)

    Meh @ Madden.

I’ve already got it pre-ordered, but I think I’m probably going to end up playing Backbreaker more. I kinda like my hybrid USFL/WLAF/XFL league, and tackles involving more than one player at a time.

From a Uniwatch perspective, the best football game ever released is still ESPN NFL 2k5. It had nearly every uniform ever worn from 1955-2005. Madden’s selection of throwback uniforms on the PS3/360 is pathetic.

You could say their selection is maddening…

And it’s worse on the Wii system, which is what my friend has. He gets Madden every year – only reason I still play is I have an excuse to go over there and drink beer more often.

You used to be able to tweak the unis on PS2, but not so much now.

I could have said that, but I really didn’t want to stoop that low. Puns are bad, mmmkay.

On the 360/PS3 you can do some mix-n-matching across uniforms, which does lead to a few interesting looks… Broncos with blue pants & orange jerseys, Tampa Bay wearing their throwback helmets & pants with their regular red jersey…last year had some never-before-existed white pants for the 49ers… But in general there just aren’t enough options. Most of the throwbacks don’t have the white jerseys, and there’s too many notable uniforms missing. No silver pants for the Eagles, no orange pants for the Browns, no 80’s Bengals, no early 70’s pure blue & white Rams…

As much as I don’t care for the overuse of throwbacks in reality, I really love having them in the video game world. I don’t know why.

Interesting website that shows the uni selection from NFL 2k5 link.

Hopefully the selection of throwbacks in Madden 11 will be better than Madden 10. I hope it has the Falcons gorgeous throwback from last season among others.

My hometown hosts the Colt World Series each year (15-16 yr olds). Check out the socks on the North Carolina team (catcher in the picture):

I’ll try to find a better shot as the series goes on this week.

Actually it’s the 5th picture of that series…and you can about see it in the 4th.

That “pink” MLB logo is just one that has been bleached out by the sun. It’s happened a lot over the last couple of seasons. Lots of the Yankees players wear the same jersey every day (superstition probably) and since they are out in the sun every day unlike every other sport, this fading happens.

This is Melky last year after a walk of homer by A-Rod.

It looks a little less pink, only because there is red next to it rather than silver. You can see it very easily on the Yankee Stadium patches from August and September as well, but in October they wore all new gear to look their best in the playoffs, just like every other team does.

I would have brought this up years ago, just thought it was common sense. Guess I was wrong.

There were some really good comments during the Twins game about their jerseys. One of my favorites was by Dick Bremer. They showed the Twins and explained they were wearing a 1909 throwback. They then had a closeup of the Indians, which included the players Nike Dri-Fit undershirt, and detailed that their jerseys were based on ones from 1946. Dick responded with “I didn’t know they had the NIke swoosh in 1946.”

Today’s version of the Twins and Indians is nice, but not as nice as last night. Twins in the red-brimmed hats (which I like) and the blue softball tops. Shoulda wore last night’s pants with them. Indians in the cream unis with the C hat.

I know it reflects on a less-than-stellar time in Twins history, but I really liked the red hat with blue brim.

I like those red brimmed Twins hats too, along with the Giants orange bills San Fran is wearing today. Instead of the current Pirates alternate hat , wish they’d return to the yellow brimmed hat of several years ago.

If I’m not mistaken, the Astros had a gold bill alternate hat when they were using the blue/gold color scheme in the 1990s. Usually, Houston had the solid blue hat, but I think they trotted out the gold bill occasionally.

Mr. Marshall, if you’re lurking on the boards, your mom’s old breakfast companion Jim Thome just crushed a homer. Smattering of boos from the crowd. Some people still can’t get over him taking his talents elsewhere, I guess.

One more post before I fire up the grill:

The Riders and Als weren’t the only ones throwbacking in the CFL this weekend. The Ti-Cats, link Eskimos link and the Lions link did as well.

But Saskatchewan and Montreal REALLY got it right:

Thanks for posting these! I’m a VTer living in TX and I always like to see how bad NH beats VT every year…
Saw the score but found very few pics online, until these.
VT usually wears yellow pants and NH grey-makes for a more colorful day!

    nono alert

brandon morrow of the jays…trying to no hit the…wait for it…rays

I really hate how the ****ers on ESPN have made terms like “no no” and “walk off” part of the baseball vernacular.

It’s called a “no hitter” to anybody with a brain.

I was in the car all day and listened to the game on the radio. It was an absolutely dominating performance. Only one ball hit hard all day (in the 6th), and Longoria’s hit was just a weak nubber off the second basemen’s glove.

Regarding the Riders, it looked as if they had different shades of green throughout the uniforms (socks v shoulder loops v numbers v helmets v pants). Was this the case or was I just seeing things incorrectly?

I think it’s the same shade, but the helmet and pants were shiny while the socks were not.

Same with Montreal’s helmet. It wasn’t that glossy back in the 70s and 80s. Still looked fantabulous, though.

I’ve sent a couple emails with multiple pictures of players with the pink MLB logo. Can’t simply be the sun, because even Colin Curtis had it despite only being in the majors about a month and not playing much. Same goes for Marcus Thames, and Joba Chamberlain, who both have the pink logo. They don’t spend nearly as much time in the sun as others, yet their logos look exactly the same.

True, but for guys who don’t wear warm ups and hang out on the top step of the dugout they would see the same amount of sun on their backs. I would still have to stand by with old jerseys. Even for Curtis who was caught with the navy-white-red logo rather than the updated one earlier in the season, it seems even more likely that they might just be wearing old gear. Since that’s how the navy threads would look after bleaching out their color, I would have to stand by my theory.

Thames and (while he was in the majors) Curtis most often sat in the back of the dugout, not in the sun. I watch nearly every Yankee game, you rarely see those guys on the top of the dugout, which is where the pitchers tend to hang out. On the same note, Joba Chamberlain spends hardly any time in the sun at all, the bullpen pitchers are inside. Sure it could be bleached by the sun, but the players not seeing as much time as others have the exact same look, at the very least those who are everyday players (Posada, Granderson) would have logos that are a lighter color than those who are on the bench the majority of the time.

looks like reebok didnt fix the alternate cut unis for this season. spotted a few bengals players, johnson, #93 specifically, with a terrible looking jersey.

    Probably are.

Awaiting till the 1st regular season game for the new ones.

Last years pants are OK for pre-season.
