When it comes to invasive species, things like kudzu and the Asian carp have nothing on the baseball cap, which has expanded far, far beyond its natural habitat. I could riff on all the ways in which the baseball cap has been culturally ubiquitous around the globe, but I already did that in a live presentation two summers ago, so I’ll just point you toward the text of that speech, which is available in this PDF.
Still, there are certain people, and certain places, that you’d figure would be impervious to the baseball cap’s advance. It is hard to imagine, for example, Queen Elizabeth wearing a baseball cap. Similarly, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that nobody at a Tibetan monastery is wearing a baseball cap.
Or at least that’s what I’ve always thought. Now, however, I’d say all bets are off.
Yikes. As it turns out, this isn’t the first time Benedict has taken us out to the ballgame, although that photo looks like it was just a promotional photo-op — very different than choosing to wear a ballcap for your daily stroll. The crazy thing about this is that the Pope already has special Papal headwear, ranging from simple to elaborate. When you have that stuff in your wardrobe, why would you ever wear a Good Humor cap? Then again, this particular Pope appears to have a fondness for going off the headwear reservation.
In all seriousness: It seems to me that the informal cap (a) clashes with the formality of the Pontiff’s vestments, and (b) is undignified for a man of his stature. But I’m not Catholic, so who am I to say? How about it, all you Catholics out there — what do you think of Benedict eschewing the zucchetto and tiara for the ballcap?
And before you answer that, here’s the worst part: If you scroll down to the second photo in that article you’ll see that the Pope’s cap was an adjusta-strap model! Jeez, what’s a Pope gotta do around here to get his own custom-sized chapeau?
Meanwhile, what do you think the over/under is on New Era calling the Vatican and offering to let the Pope design his own cap? I give it three days.
National interest: Yesterday afternoon I interviewed Rawlings marketing exec Kurt Hunzeker for an ESPN column that will run later this week. He told me something really interesting that probably won’t make it into the column but is worth sharing here. He said, “In talking with a lot of our old-timers here at Rawlings, it seems we did a lot more unusual stuff with National League teams, because the National League was more progressive and more willing to take chances and try something new.”
We all know the leagues had separate administrative offices, separate umpiring crews, and so on, and we all know the N.L. was way ahead of the curve when it came to integrating minority players into the game (esp. Hispanics, where the A.L. lagged behind for years). But I’d never considered how these separate league cultures might play out in terms of uni design. So it makes sense that the Pirates were the first team to go to stretch-knits, pullover jerseys, and beltless pants. This may also explain why most of the more outré designs of the 1970s (Houston’s tequila sunrise, San Diego’s pee-‘n’-poo, Atlanta’s feather sleeve, etc.) were worn by N.L. teams.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Giants closer Brian Wilson wore his orange all-star cleats last night, much to the displeasure of Marlins skipper Edwin Rodriguez. The umps apparently said, “Don’t look at us, we don’t enforce shoe-color rules, but didn’t the umps make CC Sabathia change cleats for precisely that reason back in the first game of the season? ”¦ Brad Wray spotted a guy wearing this very homemade Heat shirt at last night’s Astros game. ”¦ Here’s how the new Pac 10 logo will look as a patch. … Some EPL fans have finally figured out that teams changing their kits every single year is a bit of a scam (with thanks to Amanda Allen). ”¦ Lance Armstrong and his RadioShack team may face disciplinary sanctions because of that black jersey stunt the other day (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ New court design for the Cavs, and for some reason it doesn’t include Lebron’s face with a circle-slash, although I’m sure that was considered. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Good video tour of the Redskins’ equipment room. ”¦ Striped socks are great, but what if you can’t wear socks? That shot is from the Sitting Volleyball World Championships, which recently took place in Edmond, Oklahoma. To learn more about sitting volleyball, check out this Wikipedia entry and this short video clip (another public service from Jeremy Brahm).
“Lance Johnson and his RadioShack team may face disciplinary sanctions because of that black jersey stunt the other day (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm).”
Should read Lance Armstrong.

Oh, the Dali Lama doesn’t count — he’s a pop star.
And the Pope isn’t? :)
John Paul II certainly was. Benedict XVI, though?
If the Dalai Lama doesn’t count, then neither should the Pope. But you ask for monks with baseball caps, and so monks with baseball caps you shall have:

Lance Johnson?
A note on the Holy Father’s Headware:
He is wearing his house cassock, not formal vestments in those pictures. (And for a priest, he’s wearing it without the sash, too!) Going for an informal stroll while praying through the gardens, I have no issue with his earing a white ballcap. Hack, I’m often seen around downtown Cinci rocking a Reds ballcap while wearing my blacks.
All those other shots of his headware are in more formal settings than these shots.
(but yes, he should have a fitted one!)
Funny story about the Pope. If he is going to wear a cap, the only guidance I would issue is 1)go fitted, 2)white looks good, but some people might object b/c of the whole “ice cream man” look, and 3) get a gold halo embroidered, like the old Angels caps. P.S. and NO stupid New Era flag on the cap. Amen.
It’d look really cool with the Vatican City Coat of Arms embroidered on it.

Hmmm…wonder if we can get His Holiness into a cheesehead?
Kudos to the cavs for finally ditching the comic sans cavs.com on the court…it must have been hard for dan gilber, because we all know that he loves him some comic sans.
My 2 cents for the morning:
– The Miami Heat 2006 WorldChampions shirt is awesome.
– Fans complaining that EPL teams have too many kits is funny. I guess I missed the memo stating you had to buy your team’s authentic top each and every year.
I may be back later, but for now I need to go yell at the kids out on my lawn.
link could not be reached for comment….
I’m Catholic and I don’t have a problem with it. It’s not as though these photos were snapped during Easter Mass or anything like that. He’s just kicking it in his backyard, so to speak.
As for the adjusta-strap vs. fitted: there are times when I prefer the adjustables. For instance, when I’m riding my bike and wearing my helmet but I want to bring a hat with me for when I reach my destination. It’s much easier to just undo the snaps and secure it to my handlebars or something than it is to try and jam a fitted cap somewhere reasonably secure.
Maybe he was going out for a round of golf later in the day and he just wanted to be able to hang the cap from a handle on his golf bag.
I think you mean Lance Armstrong instead of Lance Johnson.
I dunno, link while looking for a pic of the link.
Serendipity.
No big deal. Looks like a sunny day – he’s probably either a) trying to protect his skin or b) about to hop into his Alfa Romeo.
The good Padre above nailed it. It’s vacation wear. The mitre or the saturno would be too formal and the link too hot.
This is only partly related to the lead topic, but why does every guy wearing a backwards baseball cap order a Bud Light at the bar? I think these facts are related, and you lose points when you do either.
Why does every scruffy bearded beatnik order a fashion beer? You really want to open up this can of worms?
I’ve never had a beard and I’m not a beatnik. I just want to know why guys with backwards baseball caps drink bad beer that tastes like water. A Bud, I could live with. Yuengling, even better.
Not accusing you of anything but stereotyping.
Yeah, but ya gotta admit, at least 95% of the time, backward-hat guy is ordering the Bud Light. The upside is at least it’s beer and not Zima (do they even make that swill anymore?).
It all depends on what your intentions are in drinking beer. The backwards hat guy is a big dummy and wants to get drunk. The beatnik is wimpy and wants to be trendy and fashionable. Those are stereotypes true or not. Who the hell cares. I’ll hang with either one of them and have a blast. And if they have Natural Light, that’s what I’m getting. No matter what direction my hat is pointed.
mmmm – Yuengling. you east coast dwellers don’t know how lucky you are. Not available in TX.
The last time I was in Florida (back in December) I was really surprised to see Yuengling was available pretty much everywhere. Apparently they’ve operated a brewery in Tampa since 1999. But I don’t remember seeing the beer at all on previous trips there.
Yuengling’s good stuff, and I also dig the Guinness or the MGD… but I’ll take an “Elliot Ness” or a “Christmas Ale” from Great Lakes Brewing over anything.
link
What about those of us who have a beard just because we are too lazy to shave and are not beatniks? I mean, my hat is always on properly with (what I deem to be) the right amount of bend in the bill and I drink Guinness. Is Yuengling really that good? I’ve never had it because my friends and I here in Cincinnati associate it with Pittsburgh.
Yeungling is from Pottsville PA, much closer to Philly than to Pittsburgh. However, I’m from Pgh and I think your chili is terrible, so I can see where you’re coming from.
If you have ever seen “Gumby Crosses the Delaware”, you have seen the best usage of the term “beatnik”.
are there still beatniks? I thought thought that they had all died out.
They are now called link
Hey, I’ve been described as a “frattastic bro” as an insult many times, and I only drink Miller Lite. And Guinness. And Oberon. And Fat Tire. And Pabst. And…

I myself enjoy Living the High Lifeâ„¢ whenever I feel like ‘slumming it’ so to speak. Definitely tastes better than most other BrewCorp USA swill.
People, the ONE beer to drink when you’re in PA is Straub. Yuengling is awesome, but Straub is awesome + 1.
Miller High Life, Bud, Guiness, et. al. — all good. It’s the Bud Lights and Miller Lights that make me think: Why bother?
maybe the cap was airbrushed? like those old nfl trading cards…was he really sporting one of these?
“here’s the worst part: If you scroll down to the second photo in that article you’ll see that the Pope’s cap was an adjusta-strap model!”
– disagree, the worst part is that the white hat does not match the cream garb. you’d think the vatican could at least get a matching uni for the pope yeah? kind of like the barry bonds pic w/ the white pants and cream top.
LOL. I was thinking the same thing. Cream vestments and Arctic White cap don’t mix so well.
None of the Pope’s formal headwear offers much shade from the sun. I think the reason you see more men of a certain age defying their natural dignity with ballcaps (see also link) is that doctors are increasingly warning men to protect their heads from the sun. Specifically from UV-A radiation that’s thought to cause melanoma and that most sunscreen does little to block. If your physician gives you a choice between a particularly stupid form of cancer and wearing a hat with a brim, you’re gonna wear the hat with the brim. Especially if you’ve already had a melanoma.
What I don’t understand is why the Pope of all people would opt for the tiny brim of a ballcap, which shields the eyes but not really much of the skin, rather than a hat with a full brim. Getting to wear silly or archaic hats is supposed to be one of the perks of being Pope; see the photo Paul linked of the little red holy sombrero. Unless the ability to tuck his hat into his back pocket is a consideration, why isn’t the Pope wearing that to protect his skin from the sun’s deadly rays?
And as a side note, the National Cancer Institute has lately been trying to persuade men to wear hats with a full 4-inch brim instead of ballcaps to protect against UV-A radiation and reduce the risk of melanoma. Basically, we should all wear cowboy hats, not ballcaps, at least between 10 am and 4 pm, according to the NCI.
Maybe Il Papa just needs one of these:

That may be the funniest thing I’ve seen all week.
As a dermatologist, I agree with this post. +1
This Pope regularly wore a baseball uniform:

Hey, there’s a bonus Where’s Waldo item in the link:
one of those tequila sunrise cups that have been mentioned a couple times in the past week or so.

There’s a cup in that picture? All I see is the cute blonde…
SWEET! I want one!
I think we’re ALL missing the important question here. It’s not whether it’s proper for the Pope to wear a ballcap, whether he’s playing home or away, though the fitted vs. not fitted is a valid point.
If the Pope wears cream, his cap should be cream. If he’s in crisp white, so, too, shall the cappeth be. But white cap with cream robes? The Big Uniwatcher up above can’t be happy with that.
What caps does he wear with his alternate robes?

oh, if only the chasids in my neighborhood celebrated Jimmy Buffet night…
any debate on the whether the chasidic uniform is BFBS? I mean, really, I don’t think that black is specified in the old testament or talmud…
link rocks it right… and the pattern on the robe would make some awesome ‘rups.
I saw the same guy wearing that horrendous Miami Heat shirt at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on July 22. I wish I would have snapped a pic. Maybe he is making his way to more ballparks this summer. Keep your eyes peeled.
It looks like he fell ass-backward onto a pile of stickers that just happened to arrange themselves like that.
The National League also was first to require teams put the player’s names on the back of the road jerseys in 1979.
JTH’s post re: the Tequila Sunrise cup in Miami-Heat-shirt-guy photo got me thinkin’…
I assume the Astros have never done this, but have any of their farm clubs sported tequila sunrise STIRRUPS? Do ya think they’d be the greatest ‘rups ever or would they be an unbelievable eyesore?
link.
Well I’ll be… shows how much I’ve paid attention to Astroc-centric footwear. Thank ya, sir!
Interesting… ’cause they don’t show up in Dressed to the Nines: link
Is it just a batboy wearing them or are they official team garb?
the entire team was outfitted with them, but most players wore them pulled so high, all that was visible was the blue bottom —
i believe they may not have worn them for the entire season (in fact, it may have only been for spring training)
ricko probably has more info, as it was he who first mentioned they were worn during the inaugural season of the tequila sunrise top
It’s a shame DttN didn’t include this detail since, at the time, it was such a departure from the rest of MLB. Okkonen was great, but not perfect.
Sidebar: It’s probably been mentioned before, but I gotta say it… I absolutely HATE the “model” DttN uses post-Okkonen.
Yup, those socks were first year of Tequila Sunrise only. Also the only year the Astros wore black cleats with that uni.
Recently a few B&W photos were posted here, showing some Astros players showing the stripes (at Wrigley, maybe?) but as near a I can recall vritually no players were showing them by midseason and they just went away, to be replaced by solid navy stirrups the following season.
Perhaps rightly so. From a design standpoint the socks were “too much of a good thing.” Seemed better to leave the unique stripe pattern to the jersey. Let it be the signature element, the focal point…not try to sprinkle it all over the uni.
If you’re in a wedding, a carnation on the left lapel of your tux is great. Pinning one more to each knee wouldn’t improve the look.

My computer really liked your mock-up. It wouldn’t let me back to the UW page until I typed in the address myself.
Is that really the Oregon uniform in the Pac 10 patch link? Why do they have purple numbers?
They decided they were playing it too safe with their bland uniforms from years past, so they’ve decided to try something a little outside the box this year.
… and they got tired of Paul’s railing on them, and wanted to REALLY tick him off …
Sweatshop reject.
I’m pretty sure if Oregon was actually using those jerseys, we’d have heard about it by now.
The new Pac 10 logo patch doesn’t look nearly as nice as the official logo design, missing the mountain. Hard to believe the league under the old regime never thought to have teams wear a conference patch to extend the brand like so many other conferences do, until new commissioner Larry Scott came on board.
the Pope needs to blouse the bottom of his garments so we can see his stirrups
LOL
The cap clashes with his vestments.
Brings up a bigger and age old conversation … Should the church make bigger strides with changing times at the expense of our traditions? It can be answered with a question … What would Jesus do?
Jesus was a carpenter and a fisherman. I think that answers the second question. He would wear the cap.
Oh no… please tell me the Lord doesn’t “Git ‘R Done.”

Seeing the Pope in a ballcap was startling. Not for the informal look, but for how closely he resembles a really big jerk known for asinine pontificating …

I’m wondering if Pope Ben has a Hail Mary or the Lord’s Prayer inscribed on his underbrim…
no, but he has special eye black for stadium masses
Did the Pope buy that red hat at Disneyland I think I had one of those when I was a kid, only in black…
I like the gold Angels halo idea!
No way there were that many people at an Astro game. Must be photo shopped!! :)
I’m Catholic, and I wear adjustable strap hats.
I feel so at one with His Holiness today…
Both Benedict XVI (or B16, as the cool kids call him) and JP2 have been known to sport some interesting headgear:

It’s a way to show a connection to the rest of the world. As long as he wears the standard issue during Mass and other solemn occasions, I don’t have a problem with the ballcap. He is on vacation, after all.
“I’m Catholic, and I wear adjustable strap hats.”
is this the real jim vilk?
figured surely you’d say “I’d wear that”

What’s that saying about the definition of insanity that’s attributed to Einstein?
precisely why i was wondering if it was the “real” jim vilk
Yeah, yeah…
Was gonna do it on the next try, but I think I made my point without having to take that little extra step.
The Pope in a ballcap is a bit strange, but I can’t fault him on the particular model he chose. It’s your basic running cap, made for comfort, breathability, and light weight. If I were in Rome in the middle of summer I’d probably choose the same thing.
“In all seriousness: It seems to me that the informal cap clashes with the formality of the Pontiff’s vestments”
I’m more put off by the clash in color. It’s like an MLB team wearing cream unis with this year’s Stars and Stripes cap. They could have at least got him a matching hat.
Nobody’s gonna mention the monochrome white?
Cuz, y’know, during football season some people would be all over that.
“New court design for the Cavs, and for some reason it doesn’t include Lebron’s face with a circle-slash, although I’m sure that was considered.”
I like the new lettering, but Vince is right – the swords are too much.
link
I’m also not found of the lighter shade of hardwood. I don’t mind when the area inside the 3-point line is colored differently, but center court just doesn’t look right to me in anything other than standard wood color.
Anything beats this court design, though:
link
Clevleand?
Good catch. I was so distracted by the gaudiness of the court I didn’t see that.
That was when Cleveland was (possibly still is) the fattest city in the nation and they were subliminally suggesting we all get off our collective arse and get lean.
I believe Wisconsin is the fattest STATE.
Has held the, um, title for some time now.
Wisconsin is not the fattest state. It is actually in the middle. You might try facts instead “belief”. The Feds keep average BMI stats you know.
Oh, and this court has one mistake:
link
The Cavs logo on the top faced the opposite way, not towards the side where the TV cameras were.
I miss that one. Brings to mind great memories of Daugherty, Price, Nance, Ehlo, Hot Rod, etc.
…Jordan
ouch.
Good assessment, Jim. I like the font too, but I don’t mind the swords. Seems like they’re connecting them with the “All for one. One for all” 3 Musketeers-themed tagline. It flies in the face of MeBron’s post-season antics. At least the Cavs-oriented font is the same all around rather than link which featured “cavs.com” in italicized, all-caps Comic Sans (harbinger of owner-penned, rage-fueled rant?)
“I like the new lettering, but Vince is right — the swords are too much.”
right…with the two wordmarks, the two ‘cavs.com’, the nba logo, the 2 quicken loans areana ads, the ‘all for one’ slogan…
it’s the swords that push this one over the top
Yes, because they drew my eyes away from the stuff you mentioned. I do agree, though, that there is more superfluisity afoot than just at center court.
Gonna have to include a court redesign to my upcoming tweaks.
Which is precisely why the swords are great. They focus the attention at center court and draw your eyes away from all the crap that shouldn’t be there, but because of whatever rules, has to be there.
“rules,” AKA $$$
“Some EPL fans have finally figured out that teams changing their kits every single year is a bit of a scam (with thanks to Amanda Allen). ”
Fans of the sport have had that one sussed for decades. It’s only really the full-on diehards (and parents) who bother with updates all the time
On Brian Wilson’s shoes: Aren’t those orange shoes against the proper uniform attire for the team? He can get fined for that, right?
he did. 1K. You’d think the Marlins would be used to the color orange, from all the empty seats they see every night in Miami. But then, what can you expect from an INTERIM manager who sits at .500? He’s more concerned with shoe color of the closer who nailed his team last night- then winning the actual game. It’s already Giants 4-0 in the second, so probably no Wilson shoes tonight. If I’m the Giants marketing dept, and I wish I was…this is perfect for the weekly Orange Friday promo’s we have out here. I’d love to see the whole team come out in orange, just to shove it in this guy’s face. We’ve got the pitching, now we have the offense, and let’s have a little ATTITUDE.
Go Giants.
Re: American League vs. National League differences. Yesterday on one of the ESPN shows they were talking about Jim Leland’s spittle, and one of the participants suggested – nay, demanded – umpires be able to return to the outside chest protector so they could ward off errant moisture. Sounds progressive to me.
I miss the old balloon protectors. If I ever get into umpiring for my kids, I’m buying one of those.
I don’t know about the National League v American League “more progressive and willing to experiment” contrast.
What period of time are we talking about? The 1980s White Sox were the equal of any NL club for playing with “contemporary” uniform designs. The Oakland A’s revolutionized baseball’s color palette. The Indians, White Sox and Orioles experimented with red, navy and orange monochrome, respectively.
The Seattle Pilots were among the more innovating teams in baseball, when it came to uniform design.
And of course, for really trying something new, there’s that whole designated hitter thing.
Ugh. I shouldn’t try to post while doing other things, or if I do I should proofread before hitting “Submit”.
The Seattle Pilots were one of the innovative teams in baseball.
UFL unveiled new unis today in Las Vegas:

Honestly not the worst things ever. I’d even say the average quality of those five unis is better than the average uni quality of the NBA. I even kind of like the Colonials.
But when “not the worst ever” counts as exceeding expectations …
What, did they just have passersby model them? In the middle of the store?
Holy cow, this league can’t get out of its own way.
And Betty Boop? Betty Boop first appeared AUGUST 9, 1930.
Way to skew young there, Grandpa.
I tried to post links to the UFL unis but it disappeared. Weird.
If the pope is wearing a baseball cap, does that mean the Vatican is fielding a team? Would they be the Saints? Cardinals? Angels? Holy Seers? The Celi-Bats?
Padres. Duh.
Here is the link to the unveiling of the UFL Uniforms.
link
Overall, an improvement from last season, when all the unis appeared to put cut from the same cloth, design-wise. I think Hartford is the best of the bunch, but still was hoping for more originality. For example, Florida’s jersey looks too much like the Carolina Panthers.
For my money, the WFL, USFL, and WLAF had better uniforms, generally speaking.
Oops, should have said “be” and not “put” cut from the same cloth. My bad.
I agree with everything except your choice for best uni. That goes to Sacramento.

The number font reminds me of KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh:

good (although i was pulling for the giants to win)…but i digress
the “51%” shoe color is almost as stupid as the “can’t wear orange shoes” rule
can’t the team just pick a shoe color and everyone gets a shoe that’s oh…99% THAT color? why everyone gotta be stylin? im not saying everyone has to wear the same brand or the same size or the same style…but they don’t need to all have a signature shoe and model…unless it’s in the team color
seriously…is that really too much to ask? everyone’s gotta be all LOOK AT ME all the damn time
well, it’s 7-1 Giants in the 4th, so I guess Erwin won’t get to see those Nike Air Sharpies tonight.
yes…we’ll be lucky to see him at all…or does he pitch in games where the giants are tied or behind?
One thing I dislike about baseball caps is when the police wear them. The proper police hat says something about the person underneath it, it conveys a sense of authority and respect. It completes the uniform. A ballcap, on the other hand, says “I don’t take my job seriously”. This screams laziness and looks like it was bought off cafepress:
