Well, That Didn’t Take Long

Yanks just issued the following press release:

To commemorate the lives and recognize the passings of former Principal Owner / Chairperson George M. Steinbrenner III and longtime Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard, the Yankees will don uniform patches for the remainder of the season, beginning with Friday’s game vs. Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium.

The Steinbrenner commemorative patch will be worn above the interlocking NY on the left breast of the Yankees’ home jerseys and above the letters “YORK” on the left breast of the Yankees’ road uniforms. Both locations are over the heart.

The Sheppard commemorative patch will be worn on the left sleeve of the Yankees’ home and road jerseys.

At tonight’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Anaheim, Calif., Manager Joe Girardi, Yankees players and Yankees coaches will wear black armbands on their left sleeves in honor of Mr. Steinbrenner’s passing.

That is all.

I’d like to think they will be small and classy, but knowing the Yanks, they will be huge and gaudy.

I would’ve preferred just THE BOSS as the patch, but maybe they didn’t think that was respectful enough?

The patch for Sheppard is nicer than the Boss’s. That is one hot typographic mess. Yell at them from your office in the sky, George.

Well, I’m a bit surprised. A bit more than what I’d expect the Yankees to do, considering their memorials are usually quite understated. The Sheppard one’s a bit busy for a memorial patch… maybe the microphone + the frieze would have sufficed.

First Yankee memorial patch on the front, tho, right?

Agreed. This is how you do a memorial patch with a microphone:

    link

Mic plus the frieze would have been perfect – no name even needed. One of those “everyone would know” kind of deals. All that text is just bad – on both patches – and the beveled bases are hideous. Busy, busy, busy, when simple and dignified are called for.

Hate to say it, but neither of these patches would have been approved if George were still running the team.

When they introduced Jimenez, he came out of the dugout wearing his fielding glove. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before.

It’s possible he was warming up and didn’t realize where they were in the introductions, and just kind of ran out there without putting it down somewhere. I thought it was weird he wasn’t in the Bullpen.

When they introduced him, they said, “In the dugout…” Maybe they didn’t think he’d come out..? In any event, it was funny seeing him walk down the length of the nine starters, shaking hands with them, etc., all while wearing his glove.

the “all stars among us” jerseys look funny with names but no numbers on the back. couldnt they have asked them if they had a preference, or just realized it was a bad look to have a name only?

I hadn’t thought about that, but that’s a really good point. Imagine it without the quote marks — much, much better.

Also significant that they’re putting the Steinbrenner patch above the NY. But I wonder if they considered putting it OVER the NY.

Stein one is awful. A simple BOSS would’ve worked. This looks like a bumper sticker you buy at a store in Tahoe.

Hanley Ramirez got introduced and was high cuffed, and now leading off the game is back to normal.

    LAME.

hanley ramirez was also wearing a red t-shirt under a marlins jersey – terrible!!!

That was the lame allstar undershirts that everyone probably received. Black would’ve blended in nicely.

OK, they’re ALL wearing S100s. This is like 2005, when they used the All-Star Game to introduce the Cool-Flow helmet. Then, as now, there was no warning or fanfare that this was coming.

    God, I hope not.

That is just tacky and really takes away from the beautiful simplicity that is the pinstripes.

It seems to look more like an older helmet than the Great Gazoo model that was the first incarnation.

Buck mentioned it’s a smaller version of the previous design.

Guess that makes it the “MiniGazoo”.

Came to comment on the helmets … Yins stole my thunder. Jeter is wearing a normal one. As for the yanks, too much. Would think each on thier own would have gotten the black band (GS maybe with his initials above the band).

I dig the ‘rups, Jimenez, but it looks like you’re wearing my running shoes.

“there will be two more monuments added to monument park next year” — tim mccarver

    uh…no

    two more plaques, for sure

    monuments…no

Steinbrenner could end up with a monument. Sheppard does have a plaque, and it was put up in 2000.

    lets see…

    huggins, gehrig, ruth, mantle, dimaggio…steinbrenner?

    yeah, um…no

I could see the Yankees giving Steinbrenner a plaque like the one link (former owner) and Ed Barrow (former GM) have.

I think at the old stadium they were wall-mounted, but Ruppert’s at least is on a free-standing base at the new stadium.

Jeter NOT wearing the S100. This is consistent with the Yankees not going in for such shenanigans. I believe they stuck with their usual helmets at the ASG in which the Cool-Flow was introduced, too.

I thought it was interesting that all the NL hitters (so far) are wearing the new S100, but none of the AL hitters (so far) have done so.

    Paul,

Do you know if the minors have mandated the S100 yet? If so, will they make the guys called up continue to wear it when they get to the big leagues and grandfather it in that way?

It’s been mandated in the minors this season (and it’s double-flapped down there, natch), but it’s optional when you make the bigs.

Given the choice between all-orange and black-trim, I do believe I would select the former.

Crap, didn’t see this comment, so I posted below that apparently the Orioles experimented with orange cleats in camp in ’71…but I’ve never seen any photos.

    —Ricko

How many times do you supposed Jimenez has actually worn that gray jersey this year, as opposed to the ridiculous black vest? Sure there’s someone tracking that…

So far, the only ALers that I see wearing the S100 Mach II (that’s what I call it) are Mauer and Cano.

George Brett (peeking over the back row) looks like someone who has sneaked into the picture.

I’m glad the ASG is white against gray… I think Ken Caminiti in the 1997 game is the last player to wear a softball top, and that was by mistake.

i wish the yanks had just stuck with the usual black armband they do. simple, understated, and classy. these look way too quickly put together. or maybe the armband and the word boss in the yankees font on the left sleeve and the bob shepard patch on the right side.

In a total non sequitur, do you suppose that the forced mingling between the players and the “real life all-stars” was as awkward in reality as it appeared on TV?

I thought it was a nice gesture. The “allstars among us” probably wanted to meet the players, and this was their chance. I think each person got the meet the player from their team, and I know I saw Joe Mauer talking to the Minnesota representative for the entire time. I don’t have any problems with that few minutes.

The patch designs, I’m sure someone will say, are very much like the Yankees, excessive and not particularly classy, meaning lacking a sense of what’s “too much”.

Sort of like the guy who thinks the way to make any joke funnier is to tell it really, really loud, and then laugh harder than anyone.

    —Ricko

looks like Wright is wearing an old S100. The padding on the ear flap looks much thicker than what everyone else has. He was one of the guys that actually wore the helmets for a while last year wasn’t he?

I disagree. Both the old S100 and the ones being worn in this game have black ear padding (regular helmets have off-white). I’m fairly certain Wright is wearing the new version, esp. since he disliked the old version when he tried it last year.

Well, Wright’s cleats certainly are the first orange ones I’ve seen in MLB.

Reportedly, the Orioles gave orange cleats (most likely adidas) a try in Spring Training of ’71, or so SI said at the time, but I’ve never seen any photos.

    —Ricko

Absolutely. Both the Phillies and White Sox were entirely outfitted in red adidas in ’71.

    —Ricko

Yup, and in the article that accompanied it, it said, “The Orioles experimented with orange cleats…”

    —Ricko

    Here’s the specific line…
“The Orioles wore traditional black shoes with renewed appreciation after trying orange shoes and hating them.”

SI, April 19, 1971 “Curtain Up on a Mod New Act”
    subhead:
“The Thoroughly Modern Phillies, the red-hosed White Sox, orange Astros and lower-cased Angels were just some of the changes as baseball splashed into 1971 on a wave of color and innovation.”

    —Ricko

I think Bob Sheppard’s patch looks fine, but George Steinbrenner’s looks kind of rushed. I wonder if the Yankees will continue to use the arm band as well? Either way, R.I.P. Bob and George.

Also, I wonder if MLB has ever thought of having each team wear the logo of their respective leagues in place of the MLB logo on the back. I think it would look good and differentiate the leagues more.

Seems to me just “BOSS” and a microphone would have had more class. Plus, would have said, “You know who these are for, we shouldn’t have to explain every detail.”

    —Ricko

So what the hell was that little “Guess whose house Cliff Lee rented in Seattle” exchange between McCarver and Girardi all about?

Other than the fact that both Girardi and Jamie Moyer came up with the Cubs, is there any connection between the two? I don’t think they’ve ever been teammates at any level.

I’m so glad I’m watching the international feed on the Canadian broadcast – Thorne and Sutcliffe aren’t nearly as annoying as Buck and McCarver

“I’m so glad I’m watching the international feed on the Canadian broadcast — Thorne and Sutcliffe nails on a chalkboard and vuvuzelas aren’t nearly as annoying as Buck and McCarver”

    (fixed)

If Joe Buck says a pitcher “pours in” a pitch one more time, I’m gonna pour a fucking sledgehammer on his skull….

It could be worse, it could be your Mets guy on there.

Nice orange cleats of Wright- reminds me of when Concepcion and Morgan would wear white in the ASG, since they were all-black no trim during the season.

And before some smartass jumps in and corrects me, I’ll do it myself. He went to the regular helmet for his second PLATE APPEARANCE.

Does anyone else think that the brims on the S100s look smaller than usual?

They should have gone with a simple mike for Sheppard and link for the Boss. I think the assertion that the Yankees don’t normally have a sense of class about their uniforms and the patches they put on them is ridiculous, but what they came up with here is not good, particularly if the GMS patch is sized at all competitively with the “interlocking NY.”

If you’re referring to my earlier post, I was saying these patch designs sort of represent the image a lot of people have of the Yankees in general, not specifically their uni or patch choices.

    —Ricko

And Wilsons’, we can see, are hightops, too.

    Maybe he’ll be breakdancing later.

    –Ricko

    Hee-hee-hee.

Joe Buck, who was so horrified by Randy Moss’ pantomime mooning of Green Bay fans, just had to say “Dinner With Schmucks” on national TV.

His disgust and sanctimony at such a movie title, though, were almost palpable.

    —Ricko

i wonder if either buck or mccarver even know the literal translation of “schmuck” or from whence it is derived

I imagine Joe just assumes it’s a “bad word.”
Because it rhymes with, y’know, “duck”.

Yet, his HBO show was a “blue fest” of the highest order.
    Go figure.

Probably has to do with how much money’s on the table.

    —Ricko

Was right before a break. When he said the coverage was brought to you by “Dinner With Schmucks”.

(I’m assuming you’re looking for it on Tivo or something, and that you know it’s a movie title).

    –Ricko

ok, those S100 helmets looks bad. McCann’s “A” looks painted on…and it is ust too clean…

So this is a random ticker question maybe… The cover for NCAA Football 11 for Xbox 360 has Tebow in the New Nike Jerseys made last year. But I thought they wore the white helmets with the two tone “F” on it with those jerseys? Did they ever actually wear the combo Tebow has on? The New Nike Jersey with the Orange helmet?

My question is why a guy who is no longer in college on the cover of an NCAA-licensed game?

EA Sports can’t use players still playing college football. It’s an NCAA violation.

because if he was in college they couldn’t use his likeness without compensating him; BUT if they compensated him that would be improper benefits and college athletics would be corrupted.
    or something like that…

great spot. They didn’t wear the pro-combat uni with that regular orange helmet. It was white with a big blue F on the side.

Additionally, the PS3 cover shows the SEC 75th anniversary patch, but that was worn back in the 2007 season. I hate the all-white uniform, so wish they had chosen a better picture.

The Dodgers helmets looked weird with the decals on the S100’s, usually, the L.A. logo on their helmet has an “A” with a wider angle than the L.A. logo on the hats.

Prado (red bill), McCann (blue bill) mismatched braves helmets. What did Infante have (did he get in?)? I saw Prado with the red bill and it made me sad. Those red bills belong with BOTH home and away unis. They just fit right to me.

Here’s what I’m talking about with the difference in helmet logos with the Dodgers wearing the S100’s:

Andre Ethier with regular helmet logo:
    link

Andre Ethier with ASG S100 logo:
    link

The S100’s logo during the ASG was definitely based on the hat (and print) logo and not the thinner batting helmet logo.

after the ncaa football 11 cover was brought up I looked for it and got what was mentioned, but while looking I came across something I’ve been meaning to ask but haven’t because I’d forgotten or just thought it didn’t fit, with it not being football season and all, but now’s as good a time as any I guess.
It has to do with the chin strap covers a lot of guys wear now a days, and something I’ve noticed Texas does. It might have been answered here before but I’m not sure, and wasn’t able to find anything about it by searching the archives. Anyway, does anybody know why a lot of the Texas players wear the covers inside out? I’ve never understood this, and you can clearly see in the photo linked to that Colt McCoy has it inside out in one pic (home uni) and outside out another time (away, background pic). Any reason for this that anyone knows about?
Also, another burning question, what’s with the screw in large plastic clips a lot of guys are now wearing, including McCoy? I’ve noticed it in college, but not so much in the NFL. Any answers/insight is much appreciated.

How soon before we see lousy fake versions of the Yankees memorial patches on eBay? It wasn’t long last year for the two Angels memorial patches.

Now, I’m not suggesting that The Boss be buried in Monument Park, but I’m wondering if there are any MLB rules against that…

    The Sheppard Patch is ok….
The Boss I’m not feeling it at all and a patch on the front of a Jersey….That’s like changing uniforms every other season like the cross town Mets….

Using Both Sleeves would have been a better look….
They need to keep the arm band…
The Armband with The Boss in it would have been a difft look.
