Unless you’re a fairly serious student of 1930s and ’40s baseball, you probably haven’t heard of George Case. A banjo-hitting outfielder who spent most of his 11-year career with the Senators, he led the American League in stolen bases six times and was a four-time All-Star who retired with a lifetime batting average of .282.
I had only the vaguest notion of Case myself until last week, when I got a note from his son, George Case III, who was touting a DVD featuring When It Was a Game-esque home movie footage that his dad shot during his career:
The DVD has color footage of some of the legendary old American League ballparks — Griffith Stadium, Sportsman’s Park, Briggs Stadium, Comiskey Park, and Municipal Stadium. It also shows the old flannels and various sleeve patches, and also has color footage of FDR throwing out the first ball at Griifith Stadium, approximately 15 future Hall of Famers “in their prime,” spring training in Florida, train travel, pre-game promotions, clubhouse scenes, etc., all accompanied by my dad’s narration.
The original 8mm color footage was silent — my dad added the narration to the footage before he passed away in 1989. I then produced a VHS tape, and two years ago I converted the VHS tape to a DVD format.
George was nice enough to send me a review copy of the DVD, which is called Around the League: 1939-1946, and I’m happy to report that it makes for very nice viewing. It’s rare to see color footage of this period in baseball history, and Case’s avuncular narration is unpolished but charming, making this a worthy addition to any serious baseball video library.
The DVD also features several junctures of particular uni-related interest:
• I’ve run several of Jackie Hayes’s primitive headgear in recent months, but Case’s video footage features our first color view of the contraption.
• Case was a speedster, so in 1946 someone arranged for him to run a spring race against Jesse Owens — with Owens wearing a baseball uniform! I’m not familiar with the uniform Owens is wearing there, although I assume it’s a Negro Leagues uni. Anyone..? (This means there were at least two occasions in which Owens donned a baseball uni. In case you’ve forgotten, here’s the other one.)
• The DVD features footage of several pregame promotions designed to increase attendance and boost fan interest during the WWII era. One of these promotions involved a bunch of players and their cleats. Check it out (if you don’t see the video embedded below, refresh your browser screen; if it still doesn’t show up, click here):
I love all those stirrup-clad stocking feet running toward the camera in the first few seconds.
Anyway, even without these uni-related highlights, Around the League is great stuff. It’s a little short (37 minutes) and a little pricey ($36, including shipping), but still worth it. To order a copy, send $36 to George Case III, 350 Ramsey Rd., Yardley, PA 19067. And if you’d like to order a copy in time for Father’s Day, e-mail George directly, pronto, and he’ll make make arrangements with you to ensure that your copy arrives by this weekend.

Here’s our latest batch of eBay goodies:
• I absolutely had one of these MLB magnetic standings boards.
• Do you what baseball had in 1956? It had facts and figures, that’s what.
• And do you know what the NFL had in 1978? It had fun!
• How about this set of 1974 MLB helmet stickers. Quite cool.
• Just another tequila Sunrise…..
• I love this great Astros/Cubbies game program cover. [I’m confused. Is the Astro helping the Cub out of the the cellar? If so, that would mean that the Astro is letting the Cub win — which makes no sense for a Houston program. Maybe the Cub is trying to drag the Astro down into the cellar with him..? Odd. Gotta love the star on the stirrup, though. — PL]
• Okay, so these seller either got the years wrong or else doesn’t know when the NFL/AFL merger was, but the patches he’s selling are still pretty cool.
• And here’s a similar set of MLB patches.
• If you don’t already have a set of NFL curtains from Sears, you really ought to snap these up.
• And our weekly Mets items for Lukas: an old Mr. Met decal from the 1960s and some swell coffee mugs. [That decal is fantastic — never seen that depiction of Mr. Met before. Note that his cap brim is orange, as was always the case in 1960s and ’70s drawings of him. — PL]
And now back to Paul for the rest of today’s content.

“…A banjo-hitting outfielder who spent most of his 11-year career with the Senators…”
What’s the origin (or logic) of the phrase “banjo-hitting” to denote a batter with little power? I suppose if you were to hit a baseball with a banjo, it wouldn’t go as far as if you had hit a baseball with an wooden club. Great mental image, though. Do banjo-hitters put the ball in play more?

Vince Young got into a brawl in a strip joint because someone said something that “disrespected his college team”?

I don’t know what’s worse… the fact that he got in a fight or the fact that it’s major news that a guy got in a fistfight in a nightclub. From what I’ve seen, it seems there’s a fight in every single nightclub every single night… usually caused by someone showing disrespect to someone else about either his car or his girl or his girl’s car etc. and so on.
LOL.
no jersey numbers for the US? We still get no respect in international soccer… link
Another day, another Holy Grail at UniWatch blog. God bless you, George Case.
And those Maple Leafs jerseys – about time they came to their senses and returned to waist stripes. I guarantee you that years from now, NO ONE is going to be nostalgic for the “practice jersey” look they’ve sported the past few years…
-Jet
I used to faithfully sit through all those NBA one-on-one half-time contests on ABC telecasts. Even as a basketball junkie, I found them sorta disappointing. But…I was always riveted by the uniforms that I had never seen in action before (like Buffalo, Atlanta, Portland, Kansas City-Omaha, et al.).
Agree completely.
I’d love it if they ditched the main logo in favour of the third jersey logo, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.
Slowly, I think teams are undoing the Reebok templates, and I don’t think that in 20 years we’re going to be talking with great anticipation about “Throwing back to 2008” night.
Just hem off the diapers and we’ll be back on track…
Currently watching Ivory Coast v. Portugal. An entertaining game and outstanding uniforms. Ivory Coast is really something to behold in all orange.
That there is why I’m not a big fan of the “National” and “American” gear for the home run hitting contest. One of the joys of childhood (which lingers into adulthold despite ESPN and copious highlight packages) was seeing all the MLB unis in one place at one time and getting a good look at them.
—Ricko
watched new zealand/slovakia this am…both with sound on and off — did they tweak the on field boom mikes even more? the din seems much less, but so does every other sound…and that’s still all one hears…
it seems “better” (being a relative term) but it’s almost like the announcers are in a booth by themselves with just a slight buzzing sound pumped in…there’s no other ‘noise’ (like, i didn’t hear a ref whistle, or if i did, it was very muted)
they seriously have to ban those kazoo’s from being bought/brought into the stadium
Boy, amen to that. I always got a big kick out of the fact there were Indians’ players on national TV since, back in the 70s, the Indians never made much of a splash so it was a real treat to see their (usually) lone representative (who might appear around the 8th inning) in Tribe colors on the national stage.
Let’s take a little poll.
The UFL season doesn’t begin until Sept. 17.
Does anyone agree with me that they’d do better if that were June 17?
I mean, I could use a hit of football in the next few weeks, and seeing as U.S. television seems determined to ignore the CFL…
—Ricko
yes, Yes, and YES!
Definitely a good “kit” match-up. Puma’s Africa designs sure do accentuate the bright colors and fantastic mascots of the national teams on the continent. Nice Portugal away kits too – but I still think the best WC uni match-up has been link
Here’s one that came in late last night:
I’m not sure it was necessarily the only way to the Cubs’ clubhouse, but I think it was the only way to get there without having to go through the main concourse. So during games, sometimes players could be seen walking down the foul line and through the door into the clubhouse.
There’s no little door down the right field line, but rather large link (which used to be link). I suppose it’s possible that the (indirect) way to the visitors’ clubhouse was through those doors.
For television viewing, I’d agree. But they’re trying to set themselves up as some sort of reserves league, ready to supply stand-in players to NFL clubs.
So from that perspective, playing in the early part of the NFL season makes sense. The players are in game shape and ready when NFL players start to get injuries.
But you’re right – I might actually watch them if they weren’t playing when every other football team was.
Probably old news but there’s a new logo for the Pac-10 Conference painted on the University of Washington’s court…

Random soccer question: Why did Nike only make one color of their Mercurial Vapor boot for the World Cup and why is it light purple and orange? Why not have each team have their national colors?

And Paul, thanks for the shout-out. Wonder what happened to the Brewers’ Tuscan-lettering prototype? For all we know, the flight attendant got to keep it.
And now that I know it once existed, I’m going to track down a photo of that pinstriped prototype. I needed a new White Whale….
link doesn’t do it for ya?
No, neither did American Gladiators. ;o)
Probably the same reason why the MLB Vets’ caps have to stick out like a sore thumb, instead of blending in.
I hear you – it seems like soccer is often that way with the boots never matching the rest of the kit. I sometimes wish FIFA had a NBA like rule that boots must be in team colors. It does seem like everyone’s wearing either the purple-orange Vapors of these black-yellow Adidas Predators.
link
You know, shouldn’t they think about getting rid of the PAC now that it looks like Oklahoma and Texas are going to be a part of the expansion?

yes, because they do that from the start of the game, till the end, no stop
if you want to take a shot at the mets, that’s fine, and i agree with you (i hate that as well), but at least compare apples to apples
seriously, this incessant droning of those kazoos is ruining the whole world cup experience for me, and i don’t think i’m alone in this
Oh cool! They integrated a basketball in their logo! How refreshing. ;-)
The vuvzelas are great at a real football game when there’s maybe 6 of ’em in the whole stadium and some drunk blows one every now and again, but the constant drone is irritating as hell.
The picture of Garrigus is not from a practice round for the US Open. It was last Sunday in the final round of the tournament he blew by triple bogeying the 18th hole.
It certainly did when it was on NBC or ESPN, etc.
Always enjoyed watching it.
But I don’t get NFL Network. Not sure I would even I could. Although AF might change my mind.

The basketball was always there. It has remained magical though!

I’ve just quit watching. Brit’s mix their audio with the voice tracks not as far out front as U.S. For someone whose hearing is deficient in the high end (like me) the voices often seem to be pressed into background. Anything British (Monty Python or anything else made for TV) I have to watch with subtitles. Without them, trying to understand all the dialogue is hopeless.
Now add those “horns” to the background and the whole thing becomes a morass of sound with play-by-play in it somewhere.
So, as I said, I’ve quit watching. It is, literally (and I mean literally), exhausting to watch.
—Ricko
Amen to that. That’s one of the cool things about the All-Star game is the collection of the teams’ jerseys. I wish the other pro sports did the same and just let the players wear their regular jerseys.
But there’s a buck to be made, right?
All that was mentioned about the spiffy new Leafs sweaters was the striping and the shoulder patches? Come on, there is so much more to like!
Blue sweaters get a white collar (a nod back to pre 1970 sweaters).
Outlines removed from the numbers making it much cleaner/
They ditched the cartoony nameplate font.
I’m neutral on the tie collar, always looks so templatey with the nhl badge there.
All original six teams have officially made a return to uni perfection.
Has anyone noticed that South Korea went solely with GNOB (Given Name on Back)? Since three surnames cover half the population this makes sense. No sign of the surname exists.
Also, a friend suggested FIFA allow federations to use the area beneath the back number for the names in local alphabets, scripts, etc.
LOL. For me, it made an unwatchable sport that much more unwatchable (no offense, JimV).
As for watching soccer, I thought being a seasoned, enthusiastic baseball watcher would have prepped me for the boredom of USA v. England on Saturday. No dice. IMHO, soccer is the visual vuvuzela — it just drones on ad infinitum.
I have to admit that the vuvzelas at the World Cup don’t actually bother me. I almost kind of like the buzzing as it comes across on t.v. – has an electrifying quality.
We did notice that- my son was trying to figure out why Park Ji-Sung’s shirt didn’t have “J.S. Park” on it like his Man U shirt does. There was also no space or dash in the GNOB
Love the link! Funny how the Steelers are the only team to get the multi-color treatment.
black: color or shade? debatable. IMHO, black is not a color.
Conclusion of the Cote d’Ivoire y Portugal game. Didn’t notice any “match embroidery” on the jerseys of Les Elephants. However, I believe it was there for A Seleccao.
If we’re talking about light, no, it isn’t a color. It’s the absence of light.
If we’re talking about pigments as they relate to paint, fabric dye, printing, etc., then, yes, it is a color.
Two distinctly different discussions.
The three basic colors involved in creating other colors on a surface are red, yellow and blue.
The three basic colors of light, as in our TVs, are red, green and blue.
You could look it up.
—Ricko
What I’ve never understood about the three colors of light, though – how do you get yellow light?
I wonder if any advertisers are bitching about the viewers lost, or those watching with the sound muted, during the World Cup.
THAT would worth some writer looking into. If anyone’s checking on the negatives of those horns and their effect on viewers—looking for hard numbers—it would be those spending millions to advertise.
—Ricko
link
where do cyan and magenta fall in?
Let’s ask link. Oh my.
Viewers who mute may not be as big a deal, since so much soccer advertising is done on signboards and screen graphics. Plus, there’s only been about 3 different commercials during the breaks- Nike, Adidas, and Budweiser.
cyan and magenta, in printer’s terms, are the blue and red used for process color printing…along with yellow and black.
Cyan and “Process Blue” are essentially the same color.
Often “Warm Red” is substituted for magenta. In comic books, for example.
Superman’s costume is Process Blue, Warm Red and Yellow.
—Ricko
Not quite perfection, but close — the Habs need to ditch the double-outlined link.
Bruins need to do the same on both link and link.
Incidentally, NHLuniforms.com already has the link.
Ricko- I’m picturing myself sitting at a bar next to you in your mailman uniform… you never cease to amaze me.
Ah, but what colors do you mix to get black? You can get a very dark black-ish color, but not true black. That’s why I consider it more a shade than a color.
It seems to me that yellow light on a monitor (CRV, LCD, plasma, etc.) is created like any other non-RGB color. They’re all a given combination of red, green and blue mixed with white, no?
Right, and if numbers show, say, only a 5% drop, that still means they overpaid by 5% because the audience was reduced by something that should have been controllable.
At that level, that’s a shitload of money.
They’d at LEAST bitch to their ad agencies, who would in turn bitch to ESPN.
Eventually, that would cost somebody a lot of money, even if just in “make good” spots.
—Ricko
Interesting AND educational. Nice! Here I thought red and green just made Astros all purpose jerseys … had no idea they combined to make yellow!!!
So you’re denying the existence of “black” pigment simply because it only reflects the least color of any pigment that can be mixed?
Okay, so then we’ll call it “As Close As We Can Get To Black”.
And the suit I wore to that funeral yesterday was “As Close As We Can Get To Black”. Cuz it sure wasn’t navy blue or dark brown.
And I’m not about to say, “I’m gonna wear my suit of no color to the next funeral, too.”
—Ricko
Damn you, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and God help all my coworkers as I spend the rest of the day singing the same show tune over and over …
Let’s put it this way.
“Black” is the color pigment, etc., we use to represent the absence of light.
We “see” black, and the intent of dyes, etc., is to replicate what we see as part of our world. Hence, labelling them “black” is entirely valid.
—Ricko
FWIW, the cartoony font for the nameplates was the same font as used on the logo. A previous version of the jersey (1990s) had the same custom font for both the lettering and numbers.
The third jersey has plain lettering on the nameplates, not the custom font.
I wonder if the change in lettering is intentional, or if whoever put together the jersey for Phaneuf just used the plain letters instead of the custom font.
BTW I didn’t cut EricRomain’s quote at all – for some reason only one word was picked out.
I have a buddy looking for US IP addresses that will allow CFL streams.
I’ll keep you posted, Rick.
I agree with you ricko. I also agree I would watch the AFL if it was on a station I got. I am needing me some football right now!
I thought Texas decided to stay put, thus preserving the Big 12 (which now has ten teams, Big ten having 12).
I smell what yer cookin’ and I agree. I was just eliminating black as a color in relation to the NFL sheets and how they gave the Steelers their steelmark complete with three-color astroids (link, not link) and the other teams got the one-color deal with black added in unnecessarily on some (Saints, Eagles and Falcons).
Thinking back on it, my point was ill-conceived and should be disregarded post-haste.
BTW, why the hell would they use gold to represent the Vikings and not purple? The gold is likely the better looking of the two in context, but the Vikings sure as hell weren’t known as the “Gold People Eaters.”
I know we have talked about this statue here….
link
New Maple Leaf jerseys are perfect. I am not sure if they will ever put a team on the ice worthy of wearing them.
Good point. The outlined Habs doesn’t bother me that much, but it would look better without it.
The Bruins on the other hand – it doesn’t work at all. First of all, outlines on names are overkill. The dark jerseys are worse – I’m in the sign business and you NEVER put white letters with a yellow outline, or vice versa, on a black background. Guaranteed unreadable. You can’t have TWO similarly-contrasting colors against the black. One has to be a strong contrast with the black, the other not.
The white sweaters are less egregious because you have a strong contrast with the white (black number) and a much lesser contrast (yellow outline), so it isn’t an eyesore. But I would still prefer the single color numbers…

I didn’t read last night’s comments to know if someone already provided, but here are some shots from the Giants-Orioles “Halloween” matchup:

New jazz logo set. I like the return of the music note logo, but the updated colors on the primary looks terrible. Here’s to hoping that logo is phased out (which seems likely given the team’s focus on the music note logo).
Not taking a shot at the Mets, just wanted to point out that there are “traditions” in our American sports that are just as annoying. Personally, I love the World Cup and I love being exposed to the traditions and cultures from all over the world. The vuvuzelas are part of that. Is it an odd, overwhelming sound? Sure, but that’s apparently what they do in S.A.
link
Oh, and not only do the Bruins need to lose the outlined names/numbers, they also need to lose the outlined BLACK “B” and return to the yellow “B” on the dark sweaters, like this:
link
-Jet
It’s an annoying sound, but it’s pretty easy to get past. Sports are riddled with idiotic sounds and images. Every time the camera pans the crowd and I see people with their faces painted and carved out watermelons on their heads, I loosely question why I choose follow sports.
Basically, I’m just trying to say, get past it. The announcers are too good, and too informative to turn down. I only watch soccer during the World Cup (like so many), so I rely on the announcers to educate me.
I was thinking about the kazoos last night as I watched 2 episodes of “Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives”. I watch the show occasionally because I’m fascinated by the food. Unfortunately, the host is big time tool. I have to tune out every word that comes out of his mouth.
Is this all a “can’t see the forest for the trees” situation?
Hmmm… anyone notice anything odd about this Bobby Orr magazine cover pic I just posted?
link
White socks? With the dark sweater? Had to be a practice or pre-season posed photo…
-Jet
Really? That’s it? No uniforms? 1990s-quality graphics? Uninformative press release? Wow, they can really do it up in Utah…
According to NHLUnis that was the last year of the one sock fits all style. The 69-70 season was when they introduced the gold socks.
I believe the unis are coming out in August. Today is a terrible day for Utah sports fans…unless the Utes get that Pac-12 invite!
Doesn’t the white script in the logo make it look like something is missing?
The difference is you see the face-painters or watermelon-head for about 3 seconds at a time. Guy Fieri’s as link, but he’s only on for a half-hour and there are alteratives. The vuvuzelas are ubiquitous in these games. You can’t get away from them. They’ve completely disrupted all the ambience of the game.
No, they actually wore link for a while.
When mixing colored light, the achromatic mixture of spectrally balanced red, green and blue is always white. When we mix colorants, such as the pigments in paint mixtures, the color is produced is always darker and lower in chroma than the parent colors. This moves the mixed color toward a neutral color–a very dark gray or near-black.
A tint is produced by mixing a color pigment with white, creating a lighter and less chromatic color. White itself is not a tint. A shade is produced by mixing a color pigment with black, creating a darker and less chromatic color. Black itself is not a shade.
In short, white light is produced by combining pure red, green and blue light. White light is not mixed with red green and blue light to create color. The color is produced by the red, green and blue light itself. Pure yellow light is produced by mixing pure red and pure green light, for example. When there is no visible light, the ‘color’ is perceived as black.
When using pigment or other colorants, a neutral black color is created by mixing primary pigments together, though a ‘darker’ black can often be achieved by varying the amounts of the pigments slightly. White pigment can not created by mixing the primary pigments together, so in a sense, white pigment is absent of color in this system much like black is the absence of color in the visible light spectrum.
Conclusion of the Cote d’Ivoire y Portugal game. Didn’t notice any “match embroidery” on the jerseys of Les Elephants.
Some teams do not add distinctive match labelling to their shirts.
No offense taken. The way I get past the slow parts is I put myself in the shoes of the guy with the ball; survey the field, “Does he have room to pass to this guy or will he have to go to that guy?”…stuff like that. If you can spot a weakness and the team actually exploits it, it becomes a little more fun. And when I’m thinking of all this, the extraneous noises aren’t so distracting.
Same here, but that’s because I miss the hissing and popping on my old records. Sometimes today’s CDs are a little too good for me.
Besides, I’m used to constant droning. I’m thinking of changing my chatty 3-year-old’s name to Vuvuzela. Nah, too much alliteration…
By the way, Ian Darke is supposed to call the US/Slovenia game. Don’t mute your TVs Friday, or you’ll miss one cracking good British announcer.
I think we all can agree on one thing, vuvuzelas

LOVE those old one-on-one games! Hook shots, real shorts and great-looking unis…THAT’s basketball.

the new “leaves” jersey looks good, but i HATE white collars on hockey jerseys! if i sink that much $$$ into a jersey to potentially wear for a long time, a white collar DEFINITELY ain’t gonna work! it gets dirty too quick.
also, with all the colors and “action” going on with a logo and jersey most NHL teams can’t pull off a single color number with no outline. toronto ceratinly can though. it will look good
Hummmmmm… a little more respect for the vuvuzela this morning.
DJ, thanks for the information regarding the embellishments.

Texas, Baylor, A&M, and Tech staying put in the Big XII. Some talk of adding Houston and TCU.
“but he’s only on for a half-hour and there are alteratives”
so if you’re a “triple-D” fan, what are the “alternatives” to watching guy? lol
anyway, he makes that show. he has personality, he connects with the cooks, and he knows what he’s talking about.
the vuvuzelas however, should really go! they’re annoying for the sake of being annoying (like bashing a TV show host simply because, “he’s a tool” lol). they bring nothing to the game. the players have trouble hearing. the coaches have trouble hearing. the announcers have trouble hearing. they’re eff’ing up the audio. you’re a soccer player, and all you could think about the past 4 years (or your whole career), was playing in this tournament for your country… and now you have to deal with these horns?!?! real thoughtful, fans! could you imagine being at the game and having one of those things pointed at or near the back of your head? it’s actually pretty inconsiderate…
Great. Thanks.
—Ricko
I’d rather push the networks to show the CFL, but yeah, starting the UFL in June would be alright. If it is a feeder system, then it’s like an extended exhibition season for the players.
If you get ESPN3 on your computer, you should be able to watch the CFL. That’s how I saw the Grey Cup last year.
Here’s the “press release.”

New unis in mid-August. I’m don’t know much about logos etc., but I assume a team is allowed to use the secondary logo as much as they want (mid-court, for example)??
Brazil and North Korea underway. Brazil in the usual unis, N.K. in all red…except for the shoes. Quite a few yellow shoes.
Can’t hear the samba drums, but since Brazil’s not playing its usual “samba soccer,” maybe the fans left the drums at home.
By the way, Phil mentioned how the New Zeland/ Slovakia game sounded quieter. Part of that could be the fact that the stadium was only 2/3 full. Man, if I knew I coulda had tickets…
Hummmmmm…

look, for the record, i don’t have a problem with the instrument, or the fan base, or the fact that they are apparently a cultural icon
i have a problem with them actually disrupting the telecasts…seriously, the noise (and lets face it, any sound those things produce is generously termed ‘noise’) they create really just is aural assault…
stupid chants, this…even ronnie woo woo…believe it or not…are all less annoying (and less constant)
but anyway, it seems like they’re muting it more (at least from the one game i was able to see this morning)…so that’s a good thing…it’s gone from excruciatingly annoying to only moderately annoying
You most certainly aren’t. I’m from a “soccer as the national sport country” and my father has switched off entirely as he just can’t put up with it. I feel a bit sad for him. I tolerate it myself even though the drone bears no relation to the on-pitch action but I find it very annoying that the vuvuzela is wrongly hailed as traditional South African culture by non-African commentators who feel that others are “whinging” about the noise.
Vuvuzelas have been popular for less than a decade and are a masterclass in clever marketing by the man responsible… but traditional South African culture? I don’t think so.
My last post about the Jazz, I promise.
According to this article, new floor will be unveiled on draft night and uniforms Aug. 16. Better news is that the mountain logo was retained based on NBA/marketing advice, and it looks like the secondary note logo will be the main logo. Also, road unis could be navy blue with white music note logo.

That makes the big red Snoopy Bat a more-entrenched element of American culture than those horns are in South Africa.

So glad that wasn’t serious.
Golf + Rain gear = Darwinism
Over the weekend someone mentioned Navy having worn monochrome gold.

They’ve also worn a version with three equal stripes on the sleeeves.

The Bruins still need some work. I’d like to see something closer to the Orr-era throwbacks they wore a few years back.
And it looks like the new Leafs sweater has a squarer hem. One more step in abloshing the Reebok “system” look!

PS “abloshing” is a cross between “abolishing” and “quashing”. Okay, it was a typo, but that sounds better…
When I was kid I said, “rubbage.”
Then one day my mom explained there was “rubbish” and there was “garbage” and that I should pick one or the other.
In later years, however, I decided that “rubbage” is all the crap you have to get rid of after a lot of erasing.
Who’s with me?
–Ricko
Bahahaha. There was a definite hesitation when the Jazz introduced the new mountain logo. A LONG awkward silence before some woman shouts out “That’s great!” followed by reserved applause from the audience.
…..and Utah possibly to the PAC 12. Which is something I would love to see. Utah and Colorado are nice additions to the PAC.
I would be very much interested in that as well Teebz.
I’ll take the counterpoint and go with “garbish.” :-)
Oh cool! They integrated a basketball in their logo! How refreshing. ;-)
Now THAT’S an explanation!!
Heh. link the audience’s reaction to the unveiling of the updated music note logo with its reaction to the unveiling of the updated mountain logo. (You can skip ahead to about the 2:30 mark.)
Vintage link Just imagine if the Hawks started at the same time the Vikings did, and the Vikings came out with their purple satin pants, and on the other side the Hawks with this green satin. What dreams are made of.
That a ski resort in Switzerland, isn’t it?
so, they show the secondary on a big basketball floor background & then the primary logo on a little plain white background?
Re: “Shoe contest”
That was always a part of Color War at summer camp.
I have to admit, when I saw that flight attendant my uni-OCD forced me to stare at her hat insignia & wonder which airline she was working for.
I would SOOOOO wear that jacket, Michael!
“Garbish” is all the loose thread that are leftover after you complete a DIY Uni-project
I’ll agree it can be inconsiderate if someone next to you objects and you blow it anyway. If they have their own section, or if no one around them objects, however, let ’em blow.
I’ll also agree that the other stuff can be less annoying…except for Ronnie. Hands down he tops the list.
Coincidentally, available on ebay as we speak. However, pretty hefty price for this rare piece of Seahawks memorabilia. Don’t see too many of these nice green ones around.
Perfect.
A use for “rubbage” AND a use for “garbish.”
(I assume “garbish” also would include bits of fabric, etc.?)
We are, if nothing else, a clever bunch of coconuts, aren’t we.
—Ricko
Isn’t rubbage the stuff that doesn’t sell at a rummage sale?
At Christmastime with your red and white striped pants and that Santa hat (at left).
Tres festive.
link
—Ricko
Huzzah!
I think that’s what I thought as a kid: The sale at church was where people rummage through the rubbage.
Although I also was aware that “crumbs” or “shavings” didn’t exactly describe all the stuff all over my drawing board when I erased.
Hence my “pre-Sniglet” declaration that it be known as “rubbage.”
—Ricko
LOL… Sniglets! One that’s always stuck with me is Fenderburgs: link in your car’s wheel wells.
While we’re at it…
That gel all over a ham?
Should be called “hamoglobin”.
aint that what kenny ocker boots up after a late night at the u of zero?
LO-freaking-L.
My brother (an airline expert) and I have been working on that, trying to figure it out.
I looked over some photo galleries to find similar uniforms, and he’s been comparing route schedules to figure out what airline the Brewers would have taken from Phoenix to Milwaukee in 1970.
You want to compare OCD?
Geeman, from yesterday:
Love the Buc Tracker – but why not go through 1984? I swear you’ll find that pinstripes-against-pinstripes game at Shea from ‘77 or ‘78.
I remembered, incorrectly, that they started wearing gray in ’84. So 1984 will be added.
There were a couple of doubleheaders in 1977 (July 15 and 17) where I show the Pirates wearing white jerseys in the first game. (White pants, too, on the 17th.) I have nothing on either second game.
Sorry to be so slow, but time that would have been spent reading the blog is being devoted to research.
Now if we can only do trackers for the A’s, Giants, Indians, and Orioles, the other teams that mixed it up in that era.
There’s nothing stopping anyone.
It’s a logo with wings attached.
North Central, maybe?

Ah, the good ol’ days when they were “stewardessess” (Pacific Southwest Airlines)…

“he’s been comparing route schedules to figure out what airline the Brewers would have taken from Phoenix to Milwaukee in 1970.”
I thought of North Central because quite likely it was a charter.

My daughter’s Sniglet:
When she was two and would use crayons to make pictures, we’d ask what she was doing:
Droloring
(rhymes with coloring)
My wife and both I think it’s a pretty darn good made-up word!
I think on that campus, and that campus alone, it’s called “DuckUp”.
The verb form would be as in, “I really DuckedUp this morning.”
Also, North Central was founded in Wisconsin and, though its offices were in Minneapolis by 1970, it would have seemed appropriate to send a Blue Goose aircraft and crew to Arizona to fetch MLB back to Milwaukee.
—Ricko
That video is hilarious. Why wouldn’t the NBA just let them go with the music note as their primary?
I prefer “I lead a DuckedUp life.”
Or, “I DuckedUp and don’t know whether or not I passed Reporting 1.”
I’ve seen this jersey before. Did it ever get worn in a game?
Re: the flight attendant in the Brewers jersey. There’s a Barbara Heimann on Facebook – she came up third on my search – pictured with a man on the beach. Looks like the woman to me.
That’s how my dog says it. ;o)
Great Gazoo Watch
Getting the rare Phillies/Yankees selection up here in Montreal. Francisco Cervelli was halfway through a swinging strike three and he was already removing his ten-gallon helmet. Almost like Brett Favre unbuckling his chinstrap.
I’ve heard he even swaps it out on the bases in favor of a “popular” helmet. Guarantee you he’s still on doctor’s orders to wear that S100.
I think I’ve got the flight attendant pegged. Her hat looks like this design by Jean Louis for United Airlines, 1968:
link
Here’s another look at the flight attendant design:
link
Think you got it. I was just guessing on North Central, because of the Wisconsin connection. And the hat logo had enough dark area around 7 o’clock that it could have the been the goose.
—Ricko
Yes, those were the good old days. I remember the late Eastern Airlines use to give wings and small toys to children on their flights. This was in the late 60s to early 70s.
Not by the Dodgers, but was used for several years in the celebrity softball games, so it shows up from time to time, and year to year.
Oh, and my bad. Don’t know WHERE my mind was. On campus in Eugene it’s “upduck”. THAT’s what I was thinking of. Most commonly used as a verb, I believe.
—Ricko
Wow that is GREEN. Used to seeing the blue ones everywhere. Thank goodness they don’t make those is the neon green today.
At Christmas time, yes.
The rest of the year, the Seahawks jacket would go with Pete Maravich’s pants:

Vuvuzelas. They have been the only thing that has made this World Cup thing worth watching! I love that noise. Something new for us statesiders. Actually all the songs, chants, horns, all that stuff is what I like about soccer outside the US. The game? Way too few scoring chances. And the uniforms? A tee shirt and pair of shorts? Not enough to get me rolling either. Phil, you and I sure have found some great sources of future spirited conversation lately.
Excellent detective work. My brother had thought it might be United – he’ll be thrilled to see what you’ve found.
The leafs will look incredible, hopefully they will play as good as they look.
It may come down to the fact that there simply are differences in the way we all hear things. That’s just true. Those horns apparently are right in a frequency range that, for me and others, is tough to deal with. No, for me, let’s make that flat-out annoying. But I don’t disagree with those who don’t mind them. I can’t. I just hope they realize there may be actual physical differences in the way we each receive them.
I wish my hearing were such that (or the frequency they’re droning at were such that) I could tune them out. But, neither is the case, and the plain truth is that I can take it for about 90 seconds and then absolutely MUST change the channel or hit MUTE.
For example, I can sit all day in room where someone is scratching his fingernails on a blackboard. Now, if someone else can’t, I’m not about to debate their opinion of fingernails on a blackboard. Why? Because neither of us has a choice in our reaction to them.
—Ricko
I remember when they used to give us FOOD.
—Ricko
That, of course, is not to be confused with “updach”.
—Ricko
That is really strange. I’m not disagreeing, I just hear the horns as part of the whole festival. One that looks to be a blast. Now if one guy had one and was the only one blowing it, over and over, when I’m sitting right in front of him, then I’d probably smash his face in. But it is such a constant whrrrr, I like it.
joey, do you like movies about gladiators?
That’s a great look for Kareem. That, or this, can’t decide link
We have to pass a braveyard to get to my daughter’s school.
Ask her and she’ll tell you that some braveyards have paunted houses in them.
Uh, OK, so athletics aesthetics…
Oh, yeah! She only recently figured out how to say “helmet” correctly. It used to be “pubbit.”
Just curious: how do you feel about the samba drums during a Brazil game (I did finally hear them in the 2nd half today)? I love those. Closest thing I got to that in person was when I went to a San Jose Earthquakes game. Guys were drumming behind one of the goals for the entire game. Great stuff.
Now for me, human voices are more apt to be annoying. Especially screamers or woo-woo-ers. I’ve been to one of those weekday-morning minor-league ballgames where it’s mostly school kids in attendance. Talk about unlistenable, with all those screaming kids.
Okay, so wanna sit in a classroom with me while someone endlessly scratches the blackboard with his fingernails, and the first one who can’t take it anymore loses? ;)
I just gave ESPN another chance, btw. The audio mix is noticeably different–and better–than it was last week and into the weekend. I don’t know the technical terms but, in the way audio engineers and I would talk about such things while producing radio commmercials…
They’ve squashed the background noise signficantly. Perhaps more importantly, they’ve EQ’d the voices, setting them out front more and made them “wetter.”
Just a guess, but they may have taken both the high and low ends out of the droning, pushing it more into the mid-range of everyone’s hearing. They “took the hair off it”, so to speak.
There’s a thing called the Fletcher-Munson Curve that’s probably (maybe?) involved, but I’ll leave that for someone who really understands it to explain.
—Ricko
I love Brazilian music, but when it comes to annoying the Brazilians have the berimbau:

“Now for me, human voices are more apt to be annoying.”
Sometimes the bark of different dogs.
One woman I dated had two dogs, and when the Cavalier King Charles would bark unexpectedly I practically had to peel myself off the ceiling.
Never been around another dog with a bark that I reacted to that way.
—Ricko
good thing i don’t care about the nba
but it looks like there’ll be a game 7
Y’know, I finally took another look at those Leafs sweaters. I really don’t think the hem is any different from a typical Edge jersey. I think the back hems are just folded under so they’re not visible. The “scoop” in the front is a lot less pronounced than it is in the back.
Does anyone know where ABC shot the One-on-One match-ups? It has to be an old ABA arena because there’s a 3-point line on the court.
My first guesses would be either the L.A. Sports Arena (Los Angeles Stars) or Anaheim Convention Center (Anaheim Amigos) if it was shot in Southern California.
Not high-pitched enough to bother me. I could dig that groove. Not quite as delightful as my favorite instrument, an electric bass, but it’s in the same ballpark.
Certain little dogs can get to me. Well, any dog can over time, but the high-pitched ones drive me nuts.
All this talk about droning noises reminds me of a joke: A missionary is visiting Africa for the first time. He gets to one remote village and hears the constant din of jungle drums. Two hours later the drums are even louder. He asks one of the locals, “Do the drums ever stop?” Local guy says, “Drums stop, very very bad.” At dinner the drums are still going. He asks the server, “Do the drums EVER stop?” Server says, “Drums stop, very very bad.” All through the night the drums continue. By morning he can’t take it. He asks the server at breakfast, and gets the same answer. Suddenly the drums stop and the server’s jaw drops. The missionary asks, “Why have the drums stopped?” He gets the same answer and says, “But WHY is it very very bad?” Server says, “When drums stop, time for bass solo.”
good ’cause I gotta miss the end of tonight’s game. Not superstitious, but I hope the Lakers wear these unis again on Thursday.
So I guess I’m not the only one who’d like to see the Lakers wear their home unis on the road, too. I’d love to see them just use the purple ones as road Sunday/holiday alts like they do at home with whites.
Watching SF Giants game tonight instead of NBA blow-out. Tommy Lasorda, the much despised by Giants fans ex-Dodgers manager, was on the field before the game in a Dodger warm-up jacket. It read “Lasodra” on the back of the jacket. Worth a boo.
Lakers should be in yellow this Thursday. It’s not a Sunday, or, to my knowledge, a civic holiday. If the Lakers wear white for Game 7, I’ll eat my hat.
Whoops, I guess they were showing a highlight when Lasorda came out at the ‘Stick one time with the spelling error on his jacket. Kruk and Kipper were making fun of it because he was at the game tonight.
Fletcher Munson Curves, etc.

Sadly, its not new for the statesiders who have been watching qualifying games against Mexico because they have been using those for years. And the biggest problem to me is the fact that they drown out the songs and music that other fans make, the real music that is usually heard at soccer games. I KNOW that there was a time when fans of the Bafana Bafana had more than just monotonous horn blowing to cheer on their players.
Yeah, duh, I forgot the NBA does the 2-3-2 format. I was thinking game 7’s going to be in Boston.
Move along, nothing to see here.
But I would like to see the yellow unis full-time with the whites and purples as alts.
Ah, good, you caught that 2-3-2 thing on your own.
But yeah, I would like to see the Lakers try yellow on the road. Not all the time, but occasionally.
I really don’t like the 2-3-2. It makes sense for baseball, but not so much for basketball. Or Maybe if all the series were set up that way I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but it bugs me that they go 2-2-1-1-1 until they get to the final round and then it’s 2-3-2. I think it kind of nullifies the home-court advantage.
And no, not all the time for the yellow on the road — purple on Sundays and holidays, or if the home team wants to wear yellow.
I might have to bid on those Sears NFL curtains since I have the matching bedspread.
