By Phil Hecken, with James Huening
We’re just about done beating the Black For Black’s Sake horse, but not without one last column. If by some slim chance you missed the first part or the follow-up, you can check those out now. Two weekends ago, James and I took your original thoughts and suggestions for “BFBS” and asked you for your opinion. We’re here today to go over those results.
With that, I’ll turn this portion of the post over to James:
First, I’ll explain the scoring. Each “no business wearing this” vote was worth a point. “Acceptable – barely” was worth two; three for “take it or leave it”; four for “suits them” and five points were allotted for each “completely in favor” vote.
So with that in mind, your favorite “BFBS” unis belonged to the Miami Heat (I guess black fabric makes sense considering that it absorbs light, making the wearer hotter) with an average score of 3.93 and the Baltimore Ravens (Ravens are black, after all) with 3.82.
The clear “losers” of this survey were the Oakland Athletics in 13th place with an average score of 1.41.
Full results can be found here, here and here.
We also asked you to nominate teams you felt we missed. A dozen teams were mentioned at least ten times. Duke University got the most nominations with 47 and their average score was 1.49, so the general consensus among those who nominated them was that the Blue Devils have no business wearing their black uniforms.
In terms of rankings, our lowest-scorers of this bunch were the Boston Celtics. They were nominated 23 times and everyone who nominated them said that they have no business wearing black (1.00). On the other end of the spectrum, our high scorers, the Chicago White Sox, were mentioned 15 times and averaged 3.33, putting them just above the “I could take it or leave it” rating.
The others (in descending order by number of votes) were the Detroit Lions (41 votes/average of 1.17), Tennessee Volunteers (41/1.31), Oregon Ducks (20/2.45), Florida Marlins (17/1.65), West Virginia Mountaineers (14/1.57), Florida State Seminoles (13/1.08), Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Flyers (11/2.09 for both) and the Colorado Rockies (10/2.3).
Interestingly enough, the Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners both got mentioned several times, with one respondent specifically pointing out the “Seattle Mariners Teal uniforms circa 1994.” Uh, OK…
Thank you Jimbo. Well, there you have it. The Uni Watch readership has spoken, and once again, you guys were fantastic in your responses. Quite frankly, I’m surprised that the A’s were such clear “winners,” as I figured for sure the Mets would give them a run for their money. Sadly, the Mets can’t even win such an ignominious honor of “most egregious users of BFBS.” Although, the A’s really have no business wearing black, and their transgressions are even more magnified when you consider they’ve been green and gold for more than 40 years. Something about this doesn’t seem right.
I am also a little surprised that the Celtics scored so “high,” but when you’ve achieved uniform perfection for decades, anything else falls short. The Celts didn’t even go “full on” black, merely using black as an accent, but that’s plenty bad according to those who “went off the board” and nominated them.
Thanks to the more than 2,000 (2,837 to be precise) of you who voted.
Now…about those red MLB alternates…
In case you missed it in yesterday’s comments…this could be the greatest home movie ever. Just sayin.
Nibbling on bacon…chewing on cheese…That’s all you need to know. Here’s Rick:
Perfect. You actually found a woman who wants to come watch you play softball. It’s a nice night, and you’re pretty sure you’ve got enough game to impress her and keep her interested. So what’s to worry about, what could possibly go wrong? Touch ’em all, right?
Here’s your Saturday Benchies.
Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: This one should be pretty easy, although you may want to give it some thought. With interleague play starting up last evening, what could be better than a look at some traditional cross-town rivalries. Ready? Guess The Game From The Scoreboard Date, location and final score, please, and be sure to link to your answer. And, as always, if you enjoy the game, please send me some new scoreboards! Drop me a line. Thanks!
Another case for pullovers? In case you missed it earlier in the week, Paul had a fantastic post lamenting the lack of ability of today’s major leaguers to remain properly buttoned, even going so far as to suggest that pullovers, or faux-button jerseys, be considered in MLB. A great discussion ensued, and there were good points made on all sides. With all the recent ‘mishaps’ involving buttons in baseball, you’d think we’d seen the worst of it.
Not so. Last evening, in the comments, a video was posted of Anibel Sanchez. I’m not quite certain what happened, but as he proceeded off the mound following the end of an inning, another button catastrophe ensued. That shot is pretty bad, but wait: it got worse…much worse. Like I said, I’m not quite sure what happened, but that’s like…all but ONE of his buttons undone.
I’m not a fan of pullovers, but that there is a good on field case for them.
Back again with more Uniform Tweaks, Concepts and Revisions today. Lots to get to, and if you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.
Leading off today is Matt Sajna, who addresses mess up in Canada:
Phil,
Here are my Uniform and Logo updates for the Toronto Blue Jays, including Home, Away, Home ALT, and Road ALT. Hope you like them.
Thanks,
Matt Sajna
In the two hole is Frank Monzo, who, um, likes the sports bra look…or something. And they say people don’t put idle time to good use:
Hey Phil,
Here are some tweaks i made for the Eagles and New Orleans Saints I did these waiting for my friends one night and thought you MIGHT enjoy them.
Hey, I made this yesterday while sitting around the house i think the Angels do need something new for their alternates and i loved what i did for their hats.
Sincerely,
Frank Monzo
OK then. In the third spot is someone who didn’t give me a real name, but goes by jnes12eaglesfan, who, shockingly, has an Eagles concept:
Phil:
Modern Eagles uniforms with a retro theme…plus white helmets.
And closing out the show today is James Hayden, who, purely coincidentally, also has some Eagles tweaks — I post these in the order they come in, and I guess the Eagles 1960 throwbacks got people thinking of Eagle concepts. James actually sent two separate sets in one day:
Phil:
A fairly simple tweek for the Eagles — basically their current style unis substituting Kelly for Midnight Green with Silver pants and trim and a BFBS alt jersey. I considered shoulder and sleeve stripes ala’ the mid-1960’s Eagles, but modern “stripes” (we should really call them “strips”) look silly.
Sorry for the second e-mail in one day, but I got bored at work and went ahead and tried a “strip(e)d” version for the Eagles too (and a bonus attempt at a “textured wing” white helmet) – enjoy!
James Hayden
And that’s gonna do it for this fine Saturday. Everyone have a great day and Paul — have a safe trip across the pond.
Edward VIII replaced his fly buttons with a zip, a revolutionary move; and his Fair Isle pullovers, shorts and Windsor knots were considered by some to foreshadow the end of Empire. — Angus McGill
The Mets should have “won”. Their white pinstripes with the blue and orange hat is a really nice look.
Glad to see the Seminoles also were high/low on the list (depending on how you look at). Their uniforms are the best in college football IMHO.

IMO, the BFBS “World Series” SHOULD be the 1973 rematch, as both the Mets’ and Athletics’ BFBS are completely inexcusable. I’d actually argue the A’s are a bit worse: the blacks are a SECOND alternate, and they do extra harm because they eliminated the all-green road helmets, creating a mismatch.
I have no problem with the Mets using black as an accent color. It’s the use of the black alt jerseys that bothers me. The Athletics, though, disturb me more because they didn’t even start using black as an accent color before breaking out a black jersey.
That White Sox is home movie is fantastic, but really bums me out that I missed going to old Comiskey Park by 1 season and had to see it half demolished in May of ’91.
I have to disagree with the Flyers getting BFBS votes.. When your logo is around 90-95% black, I think it’s okay to use black. I know I am more accepting of a BFBS jersey/uniform when it is a decent jersey overall. (Like both the Eagles and the Flyers black jerseys, which are basically their primary color jerseys reversed)
But, now that the Eagles have gone with a Throwback Alt, I hope it ends up as the primary jersey, much like the Flyers Throwback has.
I missed yesterday’s UW and just reading it now – can someone tell me what I’m supposed to be looking for in those two screen grab pics of Cy Lincecum of the Giants? I don’t get it…

Well, you’re not looking for a creeping swoosh, because somebody took a bite out of his undershirt collar.

Understand your point, but from a uniform perspective, why follow the followers? Orange has been the unique look of the Flyers from the beginning, and it just looks wrong for the club to jump on the black bandwagon with the black jersey-just like the recent switch of the Arizona Cardinals. If the Flyers want to go the alternate jersey route, keep orange, and go with a more retro look. Don’t know anything about the history of hockey in Philadelphia, but there could be inspiration in the past. The other option would be a second logo, keeping the original logo on the shoulders for example, like Vancouver.
what the heck was going on at the end of that White Sox home movie, with the stacking boxes?!?!

Hmmm…to say “No thank you” to the unnecessary third jersey, what a concept! I like it.
Fantastic White Sox shorts video, but what struck me was how beat up and raggedy the field looked compared to today’s manicured lawns. Did they have a team of trained chimps for a grounds crew?

Heh. It’s kinda ironic because link is considered by many to be the best in the business. When that home movie was shot, he was actually working as assistant to his father, who was the Sox’ head groundskeeper at the time.
I guess turf maintenance wasn’t a high budgetary priority in 1976.
Most current ball players have button issues because they never wore any shirts w/buttons. Much less owned any. The ones who did, just buttoned the top one. Take that to the bank.
That last set of Eagles tweaks is what they should do; keep the redesign of which Lurie seems to be so fond, but changing them to the classic kelly green. I always loved that old uniform, and never could get used to the midnight green. Well done.

Huh? Don’t most teams have some sort of protocol in which players have to wear dress shirts when they are traveling? Or maybe it’s just polo shirts. While we’re at it, why don’t we also get rid of shoelaces, since obviously these players have never learned how to tie their shoes. We’ll go to Velcro and make it easy for them.

The Sodfather would salt your lawn if he heard you talking like that. Roger Bossard didn’t become the head groundskeeper over his father’s job until 1983. A lot of ballparks looked raggedy, especially in those days. Hell Memorial Stadium was neglected greatly in the early 1990s.

Budgetary was the key word. That being they didn’t spend nearly as much money on anything back then. Maintenance, salaries, tickets…. I went to a Reds game in 1982 and I specifically remember a policy Riverfront Stadium had. If you catch a foul ball the usher will bring you a little certificate and you had to return the ball to him. My how things have changed.

Wow, I wish Akron’s Canal Park had that policy.

Once again, players inability to properly button a shirt should not be blamed on the shirt. Where is the manager? Where is the commish? This lack of regulation is what led to the disappearance of stirrups, now your letting it, or attempting to, let it lead us back the the dark ages of the 70s and the baseball ‘leisure suits’. Please stop encouraging the deregulation of the idiotic millionaires who will soon be wearing their hats sideways if something isn’t done from above.
Since nobody else seems to be guessing the scoreboard,

In my last days in New Orleans, U. of New Orleans’s Privateer Park had the best policy. Bring a foul ball to the concession stand, and earn a free cheeseburger.
The A’s are a worthy loser. The only team in the majors with green and yellow, and they go and add that black? Inconceivable.
Philly teams should get a pass with BFBS. The Flyers and Eagles are Raider-wannabes, so they may as well overcompensate by wearing black. ;)

So would you wear the black A’s jersey, Mr. Vilk? (Even if you would, on a purely aesthetic level, I would hope you’d refuse it on moral anti-BFBS principles.)
The Blue Jays tweaks and this Eagles tweak link are my picks for tweaks of the day.
Ricko, you think Mick would have kept the girl if he had Olivia Newton John tapes instead of the Captain and Tenille?

I never knew that. Its unbelievable that MLB would deny a fan the once in a lifetime treasured souvenir in order to save a dollar while paying multi millions to a .250 hitter.

I wouldn’t buy it, for sure. If someone gave it to me, and all my other clothes were in the wash, maybe.
Perhaps if/when they move to San Jose and they say they’re changing colors…but only if some other team adds green to its color scheme.
Hmm, as much as the Mariners’ teal jersey appealed to me, I’d like to see someone tweak them in the Seahawks’ original blue and green.

Those Blue Jay suggestions are spot on. Good job, Mr. Sajna.

Meh, it’s a foul ball. If you sit along the baselines regularly you’ll get many chances throughout your childhood.
As luck would have it, I was rewarded for teaching my son to stay in his seat during the game. During one of his first games, he wanted to get up with the other kids who were screaming for a ball, but I told him to respect the other fans around him and if he was meant to get a ball he would get one. Next inning the left fielder tossed a ball up to the throng of kids. He overshot the ones along the railing, and it came right to me without even having to stand. I casually reached up and grabbed it, then handed it to my son. I’ve gotten a few others since then, again without much effort.
I’d still rather catch a home run ball, though.

Completely agree. The A’s debacle is one of the worst out there, and the worst of the selections. link, however, may be the worst ever. It actually made me dislike the school for a while as a result. Now that’s UniWatching.

Speaking of Tennessee, I just had an epiphany. Tennessee Football has the checkerboard end zones. Kentucky Basketball had a subdued checkerboard pattern in the uniforms. Shouldn’t one school or the other have cried absolutely foul? One would think that would be akin to serving Lynchburg, TN’s Jack Daniel’s at a KY Derby party.
How about this for a “mash-up”?
South Africa officially opened the new Jo-Burg stadium that’ll be hosting the World Cup. “A giant shirt was unveiled, made up of the colors of all 32 participating nations at the World Cup.”
Does link qualify as a shirt?
Not a big follower of the Uni Tweaks but I did check out Matt Sagna’s Blue Jays tweaks and I thought they were great. No Black! Because, you know, they are the BLUE Jays after all.

Do you go to minor league games as well? Your chances go up exponentially, even if you’re like me and don’t really try for one.
Let’s see, if you go to Cardinal games, how far are you from Hannibal? Mr. Traxel was sharing some info about the park there last night:

Champions League Final between Bayern Munich and Inter at 2:45 eastern.
Uni update soon for the two of you who will care.
By the way, spent part of my morning learning about the early years of our own Comrade Marshall. According to the very nice lady who runs Doug’s Dinner Bucket in Boston Heights, Ohio, the leader of the revolution led a rather prim and proper bourgeois childhood. I told her she wouldn’t recognize him now. She even produced a recent picture of Robert’s parents, who send Christmas cards even though they’ve moved south. I need to go back there a few more times.
Bayern Munich in red shorts, red and white vertical stripes on the front of the jersey, all red with white numbers on the back. Black socks.
Inter wearing vertical black and blue striped jerseys, black shorts and white socks.
Looks pretty decent, and sounds good too. Martin Tyler and Andy Gray calling the game.

I have to give credit to Fox here. Putting the final on OTA television will hopefully convince casual fans to tune in to the WWL for the World Cup Finals in about 2-3 weeks.
And double props to Fox for getting the two best announcers in English football to call the match. I can’t wait to hear Martin Tyler call the World Cup; it just seems right to me.

And yes, I cringed every time I heard “Torino, Italy” during the winter olympics.

The BFBS survey was rigged. I and my friends oted strongly in favor of the Mets black tops… 200 times each. Yet only only 181 were counted. Hummmm. Sound like voter fraud to me.
If it had been a little closer I would maybe beleived it, but I certainly don’t now
The Mets did the same survey one year ago and they KEPT the block tops.
Nomatter how hard you try, you will never erase the history of the black tops. Deal with it.

Why the hell would you vote 200 times on a uniwatch survey? Seems like you’re committing voter fraud. How about everybody votes once and we get legitimate results?
a while back there was a story about those new clear ankle guards – kind of a piece of clear plastic that fits over the skate to protect your foot and ankle.
in today’s Montreal-Philly game a Montreal player had the strap on the guard come loose and nearly trip him. he couldn’t skate as he bent down to try and get his strap untangled. as he did so the puck didn’t get cleared and a Philly player went right by him and scored the game’s first goal.
that’s a painful way to give one up – an equipment malfunction.

It was Josh Gorges, and Montreal are using counterfeit skate guards. Skate Fenders, and the owner, have deals with a number of NHL team, but Montreal is not one of them.
I know the entire ordeal regarding who counterfeited them and why, but I’ve been told to keep it quiet because there are still legal proceedings regarding teams using non-authorized skate guards.

If this indeed was the case, I bet the voting results had an I.P. address attached to each vote, to catch & discount multiple voter fraud. Unfortunately the Mets due to a technicality of their team color borrowing history, the A’s black is worse than the Mets, it never being a team color and they already have a dark shade of green, and the A’s were one of the last ones to add the black alternate.

im not too crazy about the eagles, but this made me almost J.I.M.P.
Fantastic White Sox shorts video, but what struck me was how beat up and raggedy the field looked compared to today’s manicured lawns. Did they have a team of trained chimps for a grounds crew?
If you look at all the empty seats, just past each dugout, on the lower decks, then realize that this is a doubleheader (one gate!), you can see how the groundskeeping budget might be a bit small by today’s standards.
Hey, at least there’s not candy wrappers, newspapers, and all kinds of trash rolling around the outfield. Up until the 1950’s, if the players didn’t pick that shit up, it just stayed there.

I’m not sure what part of this makes me laugh more: the fact that he tried to cheat and was unsuccessful or that he actually thinks I care enough about the results of the survey to bother rigging it.

This actually happened twice in the game – the first malfunction involved P.K. Subban, but luckily it didn’t result in a goal. Here’s a pic of Subban – you can see the guard on his skate.

seriously lets go over the “black thing”… I think the black is ridiculous on teams like the Volunteers, Eagles, Mets and A’s, but as long as their are people out there willing to buy those stupid jerseys our hands our tied… Here’s the thing though, I am from philly and the Eagles colors are GREEN and SILVER… they flyers are ORANGE and BLACK so you cannot compare the eagles to the flyers under any circumstances… the eagles have no business in a black jersey… sad really

To me, thinking about the fact that a few guys took the time to do a survey about black uniforms 200 times each is pretty fantastic.

I think J rhymes with fizz…
As far as the Flyers go, it isn’t like they have no history of wearing black garments. They’ve worn either black breezers or black Copperalls in every game the franchise has ever played.
Pretty much same for Chicago. Black breezers as long as I’ve been watching, which is about 55 years.
And I don’t know that the Mets adopting one color from each the Dodgers and Giants in 1962 gives them license to “borrow” another from one of them 35 or so years later and call it okey-dokey.

Is her name Penny? She’s the one who, I believe, was married to Doug. She’s also the one who is the big Jim Thome fan. Maybe she saw pictures of young you, ’cause when I said your name she said how nice and neat you used to look.
I had the Warrior breakfast platter. I assume that’s named after Walsh High School. Or did I just become Kellen Winslow Jr.?

Said this before. Cable pentration in the early ’80s changed a lot of things. It almost expotentially expanded the viewing audience, which generated more money…including dollars from a resulting monstrous increase in fan gear sales. Some of all that new revenue went into keeping the fields looking better. MLB, rightly so, became very conscious of the “show” it was sending out to all expanding viewing audience.

So the other day, Ricko pointed out that when the Rangers were playing the Angels, they could have worn blue to provide some contrast. Instead, they opted for red.
So the Cubs have been in Arlington the last couple days. Any guesses as to what color they’ve opted to for?

The Blue Jays tweaks are great! The best uni tweaks you’ve featured in awhile

Not to be a wet blanket, but I disagree. The next Blue Jays redesign needs to go back to the electric stove top font. Like it or hate it, it’s an identity just like the Chicago Bears’ number font. It also needs to sever ALL ties to the current crap. (Thanks for eliminating all the black, but the current bird can go away from the hat too.)

Agree completely.
When you once had the ‘right’ look, you screwed things up and changed things, then changed things again, then changed things again, you should stop trying to tweak, admit you were wrong and just go back to the right uniforms.

There’s nothing wrong with that look. Nothing.
we will talk jim.
Mets black alts (and especially hats) are sweet – tired of old-timers constantly complaining about them. Mets have been wearing them for years and years and they are popular enough that a tons of fans sport black tees, jerseys and hats at games ect. ect.
Plus the Mets were pretty early to the party when it comes to rockin balck – been doing it since the 90s, uni-watchers. As others have pointed out, there is even historical justification with the giants-NY thing.
Simply put, the Mets black jerseys are cool, have been around a long while, are popular with MOST normal fans and it’s time to stop doggin on them.
