The Robert Harvell Files, Vol. 2

Screen shot 2010-05-14 at 12.40.19 PM.png

Back with another great set of football photos from Robert Harvell’s collection (if you missed the first installment, look here). Most of the ones in this batch are facemask- and helmet-related, including some killer stuff I’ve never seen before. Dig:

• We’ve all seen those U-shaped nose guard, like the one Larry Csonka used to wear. But I’ve never seen one positioned up high like this. Seems like it could do more harm than good, no?

• But that’s not the weirdest configuration of a U-guard that I’ve ever seen — this is. Never seen anything like that before. The player is Niners lineman Ron Singleton, from 1979. Looks like he was using two U-guards to protect his eyes from getting poked. Visors hadn’t yet made their on-field debut.

• This is, hands down, the thinnest, flimsiest-looking Lucite facebar I’ve ever seen.

• Speaking of Lucite, check this out: a full-Lucite backfield!

• Great shot of an executioner-style leather helmet/mask combo being worn way back in 1925. The player is Doug Wyckhoff of Georgia Tech.

• Awesome shot of Joe Perry wearing one of those plexiglass masks. That’s from a preseason game, though (8/15/54) — not sure if he ever wore that in a regular season game.

• Here’s a doozy of a view of Otis Taylor’s double single-bar.

• And wait, it gets better: a two-bar plus a single-bar.

• I’m not familiar with this odd accessory, so I asked Helmet Hut guru Curtis Worrell. “Oh my, very standard in those days,” he wrote back. “The reason for the brackets was to keep the sides of the softer helmet shells from caving in and damaging most likely an already broken jaw.”

• Speaking of broken jaws, after Dan Dierdorf broke his, he needed a special facemask. “That’s actualy the Cardinals helmet and facemask he wore during the regular season that was refitted with all-star stripes and decals for his trip to the Pro Bowl,” says Robert.

• These facemasks don’t quite reach Dierdorfian proportions, but they’re still plenty interesting.

• There is some seriously weird shit going on in this 1979 photo. The guy in the foreground is Rams lineman John Williams. I knew he wore two facemasks at once, but I’d never seen it all taped up like that. Meanwhile, check out the dude behind him — a different two-mask job, with its own tape job! Amazing.

• I knew Eddie LeBaron had worn this duck-like mask. I also knew it was actually two masks — a single-bar and an upturned bar (the latter of which had been worn on its own by Joe Perry). But I’d never seen a good photo that showed the separate components of of LeBaron’s mask until now.

• Most people have only seen the NFL 50th-anniversary patch being worn by the Vikings in Super Bowl IV, so here’s a bunch of shots of it being worn by other teams from that season.

• Here’s something I didn’t know: For that year’s Pro Bowl, the players wore the 50th-anniversary logo as a patch and as a helmet decal (instead of wearing an NFL logo helmet decal, which was the Pro Bowl protocol at the time).

• I believe this is from that same year’s AFL All-Star Game, with the AFL 10th-annivesary logo on the sleeves and helmets.

• Not sure I’ve ever seen a close-up of an AFL football before. Love that “Cushion-Control” logo!

That’s enough for today. More of Robert’s photos coming soon.

Prince of Vests? There was some interesting uni-related chatter by the Angels’ broadcast team during yesterday’s game. Here’s the relevant back-and-forth, as transcribed by reader Seth Moorman:

Victor Rojas: Halos bustin’ out the vest jerseys today. The sleeveless. I got to think this is the first time we’ve seen ’em this year, right?

Mark Gubicza: Not too often. It’s a good look, really. Very comfortable if you are either a batter or pitcher to have sleeves like that. Reminds me of the old Pittsburgh Pirates back in the ’50s and ’60s. Mazeroski time. Back when you used to watch games, Victor.

Rojas: I go back even further — Ted Kluszewski. He used to just rip the sleeves off.

Gubicza: He was big enough to do so.

Rojas: He was a large man. Think Major League Baseball would allow that now? Some dude just, come out, just, “I’m Hot” — rrrriiipp — just go sleeveless?

Gubicza: Uhhh, don’t think so. No sports teams allow that anymore.

Rojas: Might get a phone call from Bob Watson.

Gubicza: No doubt. I think Prince Fielder tried to do that at one point, I thought he tried to rip the sleeves, and they end up making sure he didn’t do that any more. Too many games on TV now. Can’t get away with it.

Hmmmm, can’t say I recall hearing anything about Prince Fielder trying to perform a sleeve-ectomy on his jersey. Hell, he actually wears extra-long sleeves. Anyone know more about this, or was Gubicza just having an old-timer’s moment?

And I made a C-note, not bad: Big thanks to all the readers who came by my stoop sale on Saturday (and double-thanks to Ross for the six-pack). One guy — alas, I’ve forgotten his name — was actually in town from Boston for the weekend and decided to swing by. Others traveled much shorter distances, but I was glad to meet all of you. As I never get tired of saying, Uni Watch readers are the best. Thanks, gang.

Uni Watch News Ticker: As you know, I love old catalogs. And as I’ve mentioned several times in recent months, lately I’ve been collecting old pencil sharpeners. Those two passions recently merged when I came across this old brochure on eBay. It’s really, really wonderful, so I’ve scanned the whole thing for you to see here. ”¦ Interesting memorial gesture, as reported by Jack Krabbe: “Notre Dame Prep in Towson, Maryland, recently paid tribute to a Virginia lacrosse player who was killed by wearing orange ribbons in their hair and painting her #1 on their legs.” ”¦ Not that anyone cares, but the UFL recently posted an interesting Facebook update (big thanks to Parick Runge). ”¦ Larry Brunt reports that he was in Seattle for a recent Mariners/Angels game and encountered an Angels fan who was going around handing out these DIY memorial pins for pitcher Nick Adenhart and announcer Rory Markas. ”¦ Also from Larry: “I’m reading Opening Day: The Story of Jackie Robinson’s First Season by Jonathan Eig. There’s an account of a Dodgers/Cards game in which ‘a ground ball by Carl Furillo somehow rolled up the sleeve of shortstop Marty Marion and got lost in his shirt.'” ”¦ That Maryland baseball team sure knows how to wear stirrups (with thanks to Kevin Hastings). ”¦ New logo for the Pac 10 (with thanks to Jerry Gardner Jr.). ”¦ Gumball helmet king Bill Jones has added two very special designs to his collection. First, remember Todd Asselin, the Chiefs fan whose helmet prototype was briefly shown on the air over 20 years ago (as I detailed in this ESPN column)? His helmet has now been gumball-ized. And remember when Packers lineman Ken Ruettgers added some jack-o-lantern decals to his helmet back on 10/31/94? That has now been immortalized as well. “The artwork for both of these was done by a fellow collector, David Jingo,” says Bill. “He is really good at creating these odd helmet designs.” ”¦ I don’t usually buy used footwear, but I made an exception the other day when I saw this totally rulin’ pair of Pro Keds at a local vintage shop. Are those magnificent or what? ”¦ An ad at the Angels’ stadium is apparently causing problems for some of the hitters, but hey, it’s just business, right? ”¦ Awesome contribution from Greg Zagorski, who writes: “Here are some mid-’80s NFL figurines that I got growing up. The cool part is that they’re also rubber stamps.” I’ve never seen these before, and I love them, in part because it’s so endearingly incongruous to have a bear wearing ram horns or eagle wings. ”¦ Chad Todd figures this kid‘s father must be a Uni Watch reader. ”¦ Anyone know why the Astros were wearing red ribbons on Saturday? And no, that’s not a leftover Mother’s Day ribbon — those were pink. ”¦ Brad Penny’s been wearing striped stirrups lately, but yesterday he went with striped socks. ”¦ Loads of Steelers “Batman” football cards here (big thanks to Michael Thomas). ”¦ Fox Sports misspelled Ivan Nova’s name when he made his MLB debut the other day (good catch by Grant Goldman). ”¦ More and more base coaches are wearing those flapless Wilson helmets (screen shot courtesy of Alex Higley). ”¦ Also from Alex: Never seen the “Slugger” logo that appears on these helmets. Note the manufacturer’s name on the box, too. ”¦ One more from Alex: Slugger Bird on a white helmet! ”¦ According to a reader who prefers to remain anonymous, the Giants’ pregame radio show is reporting that “there’s a contingent of Giants players who are petitioning management to get orange sannies to wear under the black stirrups. Possibly paired with the orange jerseys only.” ”¦ There was a see-thru effect on Dontrelle Willis’s jersey the other day (Alex Higley again). ”¦ “The organizers for the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) have released their logo and mascot,” writes Jeremy Brahm. “The logo looks cool, but the mascot is just dorky. Turtles don’t need goggles!” ”¦ Also from Jeremy: “On ESPN’s SportsNation on Friday, they had video of Michael Jordan breaking a backboard in 1986 while playing in an exhibition in Italy for Stephanel Trieste. I have found other shots of the uniform, including one of James Worthy.” ”¦ My very favorite contribution from last year was a highlight video of a Texas Tech throwback baseball game, complete with old-timey newsreel-style commentary. Here’s this year’s version — I heartily recommend listening closely to the whole thing (blue-plate special from Kirk Heard). ”¦ “I was just watching the season premiere of Friday Night Lights and noticed that one of the East Dillon players was wearing a jersey that clearly had a swoosh covered up by a white patch,” writes Mike Rich. “At first I thought this was odd for a show that seems to allow quite a bit of corporate branding on the air, but then I remembered that Under Armour makes the West Dillon uniforms.” ”¦ Carlos Gonzalez has something written on his cap, but it’s hard to see exactly what it is. “Might have something to do with his uncle who recently died,” says the very Ticker-active Alex Higley. ”¦ Saturday’s junior welterweight showdown between Paulie Malignaggi and Amir Khan featured something you don’t often see: Reebok gloves. ”¦ Back in November I mentioned that Dock Ellis wore a very odd batting helmet in the 1971 All-Star Game. Turns out he wore it in the ’71 World Series, too. That shot is from an outstanding Fleer Sticker Project entry about the ’71 Series. It’s chock-full of great screen shots and observations — dig. ”¦ The Brewers are once again doing some All-Star Game campaigning on the field. It would be bad enough having this on the grass in foul territory, but there’s something really unseemly about having it on the dirt right behind home. Total bush league move. … I normally wouldn’t bother to show NBA draft caps, but it’s worth noting that they show the new logos for the Warriors, Jazz, and Cavs (with thanks to Mike Rowinski). ”¦ A Texas high school is in trouble for poaching the U. of Hawaii’s “H” logo.

Four-titude: Four years ago today, I posted the inaugural entry on this site. Wasn’t sure I’d be able to provide fresh content on a daily basis, or if there was an audience for it even if I could, but I hoped for the best. Four years later, the site has proven to be more durable and rewarding than I ever could have imagined, and that’s largely due to all the fantastic contributions and support from you folks. From the daily commenters to the lurkers, I’m grateful to all of you, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved here. Hope you are, too.

Four years of great informative postings. This is one of the best blogs around because of the civility of the posts. I’ve learned a lot from this blog. Not too many internet communities thrive like this has.

Good work by all-and thanks PL for taking the plunge,

    JD

Happy anniversary, Paul. I’ll be wearing my Fantastic Four t-shirt and Uni Watch stirrups today in your honor (even though they don’t match).

Anyone else annoyed by Rondo’s choice of footwear yesterday? I thought a law was passed in the mid-80s that required the Celtics to wear black shoes in the playoffs. I was young at the time so I may be mistaken.

“The Yankees-owned Yes Network misspelled Ivan Nova’s name when he made his MLB debut the other day (good catch by Grant Goldman).”

Those graphics don’t look like YES to me (Red Sox fan here, so I don’t watch it much) – looks more like Fox. Can anyone else more familiar with their graphics package confirm?

    4…it’s a magic number…yes it is…

    Congrats and thanks Paul.

Is it my Monday morning eyes, or do most of the stirrups featured in the Maryland photos vary in thickness?

    Frosty

    RE: Astros red ribbons

Saturday was the Annual AIDS Day in San Fransisco. link of the home team’s ribbon.

    congrats on 4 years!
Tom McCarthy and Gary Matthews were having a little uni-centric talk on Friday night’s Phillies games- Sarge even used the term “double-knit”.

“That Maryland baseball team sure knows how to wear stirrups (with thanks to Kevin Hastings).”

Too bad the Under Armour shirts and pants ruin the rest of the uniform.

Interesting find on ebay, the Shea Stadium light. Any idea what it was used for?

    Re.:AFL ball with “cushion control”

That ball was the J6V model that the league used from 1960 to 1964 when Spalding, apparently,
discontinued that ball model. From 1965 until the merger, the league switched to the Spalding J5V which
did not have the “cushion control” feature.
Interesting find on ebay, the Shea Stadium light. Any idea what it was used for?
Actually, several people have now checked in to tell me that it’s probably a bogus/faux reproduction that was never used on-site. Too bad. I’m gonna take it out of the Ticker.

Rondo has been wearing the opposite color shoes for a couple months now. He is wearing dark shoes at home and white on the road.

There may be a reason (and a fine?) for why he is doing it, but I have not seen or heard one given.

    Congratulations on four years, Paul.

    Lotta work. Lotta dedication.

    Tough job well done.

    Congrats on 4 years!

More important, thank you for helping me realize I’m not the only person on the planet who thinks a uni is important.

Like my high school baseball team said when we got new unis our Senior year – the uni may not make you win or lose, but “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good.”

Happy 4th Anniversary. This site is great, I don’t know how we lived without it!

Those are not the YES Network graphics. Blame Fox Sports Detroit; Nova debuted against the Tigers.

Sort of defeats the purpose by wearing their red brick road jerseys – you can’t even really see the ribbon.

Interesting that the Astros wore their grays Friday night with the Giants in orange. It seems there would have been enough contrast between the colors…

Congrats on 4 great years, Paul!

I’ve been reading since the beginning, and I also had doubts about whether there was enough uni-based content to fill up a full-time blog.

    You’ve far exceeded my expectations.

    Great job!!!

This is one of the great things about the internet — it provides Uni Idiots like myself with their own village.

(Wow — that sounded much better in my head…)

Thank you for 4 great years, Paul.

It takes a village to raise an idiot.

Or, in our case, many, many idiots
(myself included, so don’t anybody go all, “Who u callin’ a idiot?” on us).

Four years? Wow. It’s like 1/25th of a Cubs drought!

To celebrate – and to stop being a freeloader – I’ll be signing up for my membership tonight. I also encourage others like me (regular readers/commenters who haven’t become a member) to do the same on this important date!

Happy 4th! In honor of this special day, I’m going to dry clean my Ottawa 67’s Barber Pole Jersey at my favorite dry cleaners in Skokie.

Aren’t we supposed to wear the special caps on the 4th? (Or, since this is Uni Watch, stirrups?)

Agreed – I’ll wear this instead.

Congrats on 4 very informative years! We are officially obsessed.

Regarding those “Nike” uniforms on “Friday Night Lights”, after a terrible first loss, the East Dillon Lions team burned those old jerseys, and in the next episode will be getting new ones, from Under Armour, of course.

    link

These are a much simpler design than the cross-town Dillon Panthers, and they have (lame) helmet numbers.

If you’ve never watched the show, you are missing a great slice-of-life drama, that happens to revolve around football. Highly recommended.

Paul, I believe the best compliment I could pay you is this: I’m here every day. I might not post a comment every day, but I’m here every day.

    Happy anniversary. Thank you.

Happy 4th anniversary from (left to right) link!

The link brought back memories; Mrs. Goaler and I were once foster parents — when our since-adopted son first came into our lives, he was just over two, but only had a 20-word vocabulary (very limited and unusual at that age)… it was amazing how many words he gained in a short period of time; apparently nobody had talked to him before!

***Spoiler alert: if you didn’t see the episodes when they aired on DirecTV and you want to be surprised when the unis make their debut on the show, don’t click these links ***

I like the link, regardless of the link.

It’s a a back-to-basics look that’s a huge upgrade over the crap the link and further proof that Under Armour is capable of producing decent stuff.

Ummm… I guess my spoiler alert was useless if the first link mtjaws posted showed the Lions’ new unis.

I don’t know what the pic was, because the web filter blocked it.

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, has Terry Francona ever been seen on the field or in the dugout – during a game – wearing an actual Red Sox jersey? I don’t recall him ever wearing a Phillies jersey when he managed the Phils, just a warm-up jacket or that pullover with the sleeves pushed up (he even had short-sleeved versions) and a red t-shirt showing through. Likewise, I just scanned through 12 pages of Google images and didn’t see a single in-game shot of Francona simply wearing a Red Sox jersey.

They use virtually the same font as Detroit for their logo and recently discontinued their baseball program. I just don’t know of a connection to Willis. Anyone?

Happy anniversary, Paul, Phil, Vinny, Redemske, and everyone else who has been a major factor in making this a daily stop on my Interwebs tour.

To everyone else, keep being all-stars! This community is great!

A green/gold/burgundy/gold/green stripe pattern (like the runner at the top) on a white stirrup, OR three stripes–burgundy, gold, and green, from top to bottom, on white. Perhaps?

That new Warriors logo is seriously annoying me.

I presume the bridge is supposed to be the Bay Bridge. I can see the logic in that choice as it harks back to the old Golden Gate Bridge logo but shows that the team has a stronger East Bay fan base than in the city or Marin.

However, the image appears to be clip-art or simply a different bridge. It has diagonal cables whereas the Bay Bridge has vertical cables.

    link

Does anyone recognize the bridge in the logo?

Don’t even get me started on the standard windows font the wording is done in.

It’s always good to see the bullpen carts, too. MLB Network the other day was showing a 1985 Cardinals at Mets game, and one of the Mets’ relievers got into the cart and was transported to the mound. When did teams stop using the bullpen buggies?

That’s the best part of the logo – in a few years, the Eastern Span with its diagonal cables will be an icon of the area, connecting Oakland and SF.

And the Warriors will already be associated with it.

okay, here is warning that most of you won’t need, but on the outside shot that one of you might have a budget computer with the top cracked off so you can have a fan cooling it, AND you are making beer for the first time, heed this sage advice. if your cool dark place is right next to your cracked open hard drive, find another place, because sometimes wort shoots out of the fermentation lock like a geyser. and you do not want to be lying in bed hearing pffft pfffft pfffffffft, only to realize after you find your spectacles that your wort is filling your hard drive. you don’t want that, that’s bad.

Congrats on 4 entertaining years Paul & company. I’m a daily reader but not a member because I can’t do a Rockies membership card without purple. The 4th anniversary seems like the perfect occasion to grant amnesty to all the Rockies, Vikings, LSU, Northwestern, etc. fans out there. In fact is it just me or is that “4” logo at the end of today’s post a shade of lavender?

Allow me to joint the chorus thanking you for four years of posts. Great milestone. Also, thank you for the interesting and eclectic assortment of weekend contributors, Vince, Bryan and Phil. Most of all thank you for acknowledging that I was not the only one out there who appreciated athletic aesthetics as much as the athletic pursuits themselves. This blog always introduces me to something new. Today, though, that YouTube video put an extra smile on my face.

Four more years! Four more years!

Uni Watch is a a true community — we’re all here because of a common interest, and there’s a real camaraderie and respect among everyone. That this site is so troll-free borders on the miraculous.

It all starts with Paul, of course. His hard work on the site provides us with interesting content every day, and his personality sets the tone for all of our discussion.

One last thing — in case people hadn’t noticed, Paul is a freakin’ great writer. This site would be worthwhile even if he weren’t, but he writes so well that it elevates everything to a higher level. As a writing teacher, I really appreciate it.

Congrats and continued success to you, Paul!

I almost went to Hightower High School (it is a magnet school in Fort Bend ISD). I ended up playing for their hockey team at one point, and when we got new sweaters, we came very close to using the U of Hawaii logo.

The uniform company said we couldn’t do it without a licensing fee, so instead we stuck with our old jersey design. The logo was ironically the Carolina Hurricane’s circle on the old Hartford Whaler’s template, with same navy, green, and silver colors. Prior to picking up the Hawaii “H”, the football team used that logo as well.

I’m probably the only person in town who sees it and thinks it’s weird to see that Hurricane logo with the Whaler’s colors.

As a side note to my already lengthy post: thanks for the four years Paul. I graduate high school this weekend, and it seems like this blog has been as much a part of my life as anything else in high school. Hopefully I’ll say the same thing when I finish college too.

I really wish I had more time to lurk in the comments section (I freaking miss it), but I still read every day and comment a couple of times a week. Didn’t work for Trent Green…

Poor guy. Given all the concussions he had, his wardrobe should be nothing but red shirts now.
Wasn’t that why he went to the Chiefs?

Nah, he was traded to the Chiefs. He had a knee injury with the Rams, which led to the rise of Kurt Warner. His first big concussion was the one in the video in KC. His 2nd came as a Dolphin.

Mr. Vilk, Green went to the Chiefs after blowing out his knee courtesy of Rodney Harrison, so his initial transaction there was injury-related. Also, Kansas City wears red jerseys, which is why I was making a joke about that!

    Happy 4th anniversary.

A lot of hard work to keep this site going with as much great and fun stuff.
Hey Paul, the link to the Jazz hat is broken, and there isn’t any Jazz draft gear in the NBA store. Did you let the cat out of the bag too early, or what?
SUMMER, 1974

New Orleans was awarded the NBA Jazz franchise, and they set up a ticket office in a downtown hotel. Not alot of talk about it outside of the sports pages, but then one day EVERY public transit bus had giant signs on the side of the busses with the original/new Jazz logo (the one we believe is now coming back). The advertizing campaign went on for months, and while t-shirts, jackets and jerseys were rare for that time, you did see the logo EVERYWHERE due to that campaign.

the first thing I did, at 14, was call the ticket office and ask for the person in charge of the uniforms. Eventually, I got someone on the phone and went on and on about how the home unis should be White, with color trim, and not Yellow/Gold, as that would too much resemble the Lakers. The guy assured me that it had already been decided, and that the Jazz would wear White unis at home. I of course did not trust them, and had to wait until the day after the first ghame to see the news to be sure that they did wear White. And they did. And I was a happy 14 year old
I gotta tell you that was a really impressive Jazz logo for the time, and even more impressive now that we have had 35 years of crappy bad logos designed by cookie-cutter PR firms and the slow neices and nephews of university presidents that bill colleges such as Tulane $75,000.00 for “new logo concepts” that look like crap and displace wonderful, traditional, unique and classy logos, colors and nicknames (I’m sorry if I sound a bit bitter, BUT I AM!).

Nonetheless, I welcome the Jazz original logo to return. Just don’t muck it up by putting the city/state name in small print on top of it. It is a clean , unique logo as is – and if you don’t already know where they currently play then you really don’t need to buy any attire because you’re probably too dense or out-of-it to care anyway!

And you did well. Didn’t realize we were on the same page.

Yet another reason I turn down the sound when Rodney Harrison is on Football Night in America. He shoulda been a Raider.

randy wells of the cubs was sporing some stirrups tonight, hopefully he stays with it but goes for better cut rups soon!
