Got a note the other day from Robert Harvell, the auction director at GUU Auctions. “Over the years I’ve collected vintage football photos, circa 1950-1970, from every corner of the net (and from mags, DVDs, newspaper clippings, etc.),” he wrote. “All told, these photos currently total around 80,000-100,000 and reside on my hard drive. I’ve decided to start sharing them with my fellow enthusiasts.” Today will be the first of several installments examining some of Robert’s images.
So:
• I’ve never seen a football player wear a belt like this one.
• How great would it be to have a copy of this Rams publication?
• You’ll never find a better view of the gold stripe that used to be on the Falcons’ helmets.
• And here’s a similarly fine view of the Cowboys’ bicentennial stripe.
• Always fun to see the NFL’s 50th-anniversary patch.
• Some very primitive facemask repair appears to have been done here. Is that duct tape or what?
• Has anyone ever chronicled (or noticed) how often a first initial is followed by a period vs. how often the initial just sits all by its lonesome?
• Painting the Little Brown Jug! Awesome photo.
• This shot is from a Giants/Bears game at the Polo Grounds, 12/6/25. That’s Red Grange with the ball. Naturally, I’m more interested in the bowtie-clad ref.
• Look closely at this sideline shot of the Giants and you’ll see that their jacket clearly featured a baseball-style interlocking NY logo.
• Whoa — Jim Brown was some physical specimen. That’s from his rookie season of 1957.
• White football! That’s Otto Graham playing in an AAFC night game, circa 1955.
• What’s going on here? The caption tells the interesting tale: “10/19/56 — Members of the Cleveland Browns football team demonstrate the use of the high frequency radio and the electronic helmet. Yesterday National Football League Commissioner Bert Bell pulled the fuse and banned all wireless communication devices for the rest of the season. Head coach Paul Brown gives a play to OB Ratterman via the high frequency radio. Ratterman has a receiver built into his helmet.”
• It is imperative that we find out what happened to this drum. Wouldn’t hurt to find this tuba, too.
• Three Steelers, three different outerwear styles.
• Here’s something I’d never seen before: wooden folding chairs on the sideline!
• Remember when coin tosses didn’t look like crowded conventions?
• Finally, what’s that decal on Mark Herrman’s helmet? I asked Robert, but he didn’t know. So I showed the photo to Helmet Hut honcho Curtis Worrell and he didn’t know. So he showed it to former Purdue player Bart Burrell, who said: “It’s for the Hammer Club. A motivational sticker that was awarded by the coaches. I forget what the criteria were but we all wanted one.”
That’s enough for this round. More of Robert’s stuff will be coming soon.
Punkin’s Collector’s Corner: Remember Punkin, Brinke Guthrie’s cat? Well she’s out of a job, just like everyone else in America. Blame it on cat allergies and a rambunctious nature. So Punkin’s Corner, which debuted earlier this week, is now Collector’s Corner, and the photo you see at left is of the young Brinkester himself, back when he was a wee lad. Not quite as cute as Punkin, but he’ll do.
Before we get to Brinke’s latest round of eBay auctions, one follow-up from last time: He had mentioned that he didn’t know how these NFL mini-records were played. That prompted several readers to refer to this mini-record player, which was designed to play Matell’s mini-records. Jeff Katz still has his, in its original box — with the receipt!
Now then, here’s Brinke with his latest round of eBay picks.

Remember the time before the Internet? You couldn’t just get NFL news with a click. You had to buy your info at a newsstand, where you could find things like Prolog, an NFL-published annual. Look at the price on that thing!
In other finds:
• I think they were off on the scale of the Jets logo. Just a bit.
*Love the Carolina Cougars logo. Me, I was a Colonels guy, and then the Chaps once we moved to Dallas.
• Love the facemask on this book cover. The Flower Power stickers just top it off.
• This card is great if for no other reason than the jersey stripes. And it’s marked down by $1.12!
• I love this lunchbox version of the NFL helmets.
• Always loved the NFL Big Signs, even if they did repeat the player graphics, just changing the team.
• Had one of these MLB bicentennial stickers on my bedroom window in Terrace Park, Ohio. It would NOT come off the window, and I suspect a few remnants still remain.
• Whoa, Nellie — a complete MLB Slurpee cup helmet collection!
• Here’s something you don’t often see: unused gumball helmet decals.
• Or, even better, a complete make-your-own-gumball kit! Check out the “CB” Browns logo and the odd diagonal Chargers logo.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The Phillies are memorializing Robin Roberts by hanging his jersey in the dugout. They’ll also be adding a jersey patch with Roberts’s uni number, although they didn’t have that in time for yesterday afternoon’s game. ”¦ Really interesting article about the design team hired to rebrand Fox Sports. Additional images here (with thanks to Marc Swanson). ”¦ Lots of chatter about the Redskins possibly moving toward gold pants, which would be a-ok with me. ”¦ Interesting story about high-tech F1 pit crew vests here (with thanks to BJ Lanier). ”¦ Anyone know why Mikael Samuelsson wears clear tape on his gloves, and/or if any other NHLers do likewise? (As spotted by Kent Foster.) ”¦ New field surface for the Ravens. “The video on that page shows how they cut out the numbers and sew them into the field and how they put the sand/rubber in,” writes William Yurasko. “While it is interesting, we’re still talking about artificial turf. Now this is a football field.” ”¦ Lebron James is apparently already wearing No. 6 in practices (as reported by Parker Ferguson). ”¦ Latest military tribute: Georgia Tech will be wearing camo caps tonight (with thanks to Mike Rich). ”¦ Nicole Haase notes that the LSU softball team’s catcher has a very odd wristband. Looks like a football play-calling sleeve, no? Anyone know more about it? ”¦ The stirrup-to-sani ratio on these UNC-Pembroke players is perfect — perfect — except that No. 12 is wearing his backwards, grrrrr (with thanks to Nick Phillips). ”¦ Here’s a great shot of Ken Harrelson’s nickNOB and the beak that inspired it. That “W” looks more like an upside-down “M,” no? (Big thanks to Warren Humphrey..) … Someone on the Chris Creamer board posted two old newspaper items about the Cowboys’ blue jersey hex. Look here and here. The jersey redesign mentioned in the second article resulted in their blue uni changing from this to this. ”¦ Also from the Creamer board: I don’t think I’d ever seen a photo (as opposed to an illo) of the A’s 1999 TATC uniform until now. They also posted two Angels TATC shots (here’s the other one) that I hadn’t seen before. I’ve added these to my 1999 TATC set.

Not quite. If it’s from 1955, that’s NFL night game. The AAFC died and the Browns joined the NFL in 1950.

Are those A’s turn-ahead-the-clock jerseys black? Did the team get the idea to start wearing black jerseys because of this one-time promotion?
Regarding the “Roberts jersey”, it’s nice that they remembered the raglan sleeves, but it would have been nicer had someone used the correct font for the numbers.
Regarding the LSU softball picture, I remember seeing a story a few years ago about a company that has come up with basically a random number generator that allows a coach to call plays on a game-to-game basis using charts that I believe would look like that. For example, instead of having to go through a myriad of signs in the third-base coaching box, the coach can just yell “128!” For that game, on the chart 128 could mean “bunt,” so everyone is automatically on the same page. I’ve never actually seen one of those things, but I’d be willing to be it’s something along those lines.
About the LSU player with the armband – I’ve noticed several other collegiate teams wearing them. When I was shooting our Ball State team this spring they used them quite frequently, and almost every player had them. After talking with some of the players, I discovered they use them to convey pitch types (for catchers), first and third situations, and baserunning signals. Here’s our catcher with hers:
link
couple things:
1. redskins in gold pants? hmmm…anything’s better than the maroon, but i wonder how they’d do the striping…this would be ok, and this would be better
but i have a feeling they’ll look like this…
2) the ticker item about the lsu catcher’s wristband — we’ve seen that before, on here
not sure what article it was in or i’d backref it, but it was definitely discussed back in 09

I remember seeing the game cap at the ’99 All-Star FanFest in Boston. It was definitely green.
RE: WHITE FOOTBALL! I think the bigger point here is that this is only the second photo I’ve ever found of the Browns in their original orange jerseys (and socks). I would love to see this as a throwback.
Also, the Eagles tuba is more specifically a Sousaphone, which is usually distinguished as such from a standard tuba.
Mikael Samuelsson is probably wearing the tape on his wrists to help hold the gloves over his elbow pads. I don’t know if any other NHL’ers do it, but two guys on my team do it for that reason.
Great to see another Kentucky Colonels fan- my Dad and I were big fans, and we attended many a game back in the 70’s.

Mainly Panther Racing ( link )Hendrick Motorsports ( link ) and Stewart-Haas Racing (link )
Since those 3 teams are sponsored by either The National Guard or The Army, it makes sense for them to use the “camo” design.

I’m not sure how to feel about the shirts at the bottom of the page. On one hand, it’s nice that they’re raising money for Nashville. On the other hand the “Reebuild” thing kind of annoys me.
link
Mikael Samuelsson is wearing a really small pair of Bauer gloves, maybe size 12″. There isn’t a lot of padding above the wrists and the tape is probably keeping the padding more together helping to protect the wrists. My guess is he has small hands and/or likes a very, very tight fitting glove. FYI, clear hockey tape is “stretchy” compared to the colored tape which would be similar to masking tape.

UNC baseball catchers have been wearing the wrist bands with a ‘cheat sheet’ on how to pitch certain batters for a few years. Looks weird when they wear them at bat too, but current catcher Jacob Stallings sometimes does [sorry–no photo].

The Bengals should be wearing orange. The Browns should wear… wait for it…. BROWN.
Maybe I haven’t been paying attention all these years, but I don’t seem to recall ever seeing players seated on a wooden platform on an NFL sideline before I saw link. Is it a link thing or was it pretty common around the league back then?
One other weird thing about that program… it’s from Kezar, but the title lists the Niners first as if they were the away team.
Regarding the LSU catcher wristband…
I caught for a DII/DI team for four years and the last two seasons I played the other catcher and I would wear those during games. The wristband is a QB wristband that has a card in it. The card is split into 6 sections of 16 or 25 blocks each. Each section is numbered 0-5. Each section has a different pitch, location, or pickoff play in it. The coach will give a series of 4 or 5 numbers, three of which will be live. The first number will tell you which block to go to, and then the other two will tell you what location in that block to use. The goal is that the system is supposedly unbreakable. Some schools will even have a pitcher write down the opposing schools numbers to see if they ever repeat.

Agreed. I pray the Browns never again wear those orange things. I’m not a fan of lighter color helmets matched with the same color jersey unless both are white. Dark colors work much better (Redskins, Bears, Vikings, etc.) when matching helmet to jersey. Imagine the Chargers with a powder blue helmet/jersey combo or if the Bucs (in the Creamsicle days) went orange on orange. Yeesh.

If the Browns were named after a color, I’d tend to agree with you, but since their namesake is a person, I don’t think they need to be shoehorned into wearing brown.
Once a year, it would rock, as long as they did it correctly, with the brown numbers and orange socks with the brown and white stripes. They just screwed it up big time when they first introduced the orange jersey earlier this decade. Those white numbers with the brown drop shadow were pretty offensive.
Another Browns’ throwback I’d like to see is the original 1946 duds which featured a white helmet and brown numerals with an orange shadow.
It’s not really that I like any of these looks better than what the Browns currently wear, but I would like to see them on the field once a year.

The other tipoff that the picture’s not from the AAFC is that link in the AAFC (no rules for “eligible receiver” numbers in that league) and had to link when the Browns joined the NFL, to conform to the older league’s numbering rules. link link for the same reason.

And you’re right about the pariah aspect. I’ve smoked, quit for eight years, started again five years ago. And no matter which I was, smoker or non-smoker, I hated the people who regarded it as a moral decision. Baloney. It’s a health decision. Smokers are not immoral people.
Which led me to one of my better observations. The previous generation had to deal with the arrogance of its “holier than thou” people. The following generations deal with the snooty “healthier than thou” crowd.

I remember a network telecast using a long lens to show Hank Aaron sitting in the dugout in the mid-70’s, a season or so after he’d passed Ruth. Announcers were talking about what a credit to game he was, when up comes his right hand and he takes a huge drag. Strangely, announcers never mentioned it, and the director quickly cut away from the shot.
Wonder why that was. ;)

If I recall correctly, American Needle was trying to prove that the NFL is 32 separate entities that should each be allowed to sign contracts with their own suppliers, so I think you do have it backwards. The NFL wants to be seen as one entity so it can sign those big time exclusive deals that cover all the teams under its corporate umbrella.
Thanks for all the amazing football pictures – I could look at that stuff all day. (I used to own that ’76 NFL lunchbox!)
I had that one too! Was my fave until it fell apart… literally. LOVED that it had the two new teams, the Bucs and Seahawks… Bucs in AFC and Seahawks in NFC (v.1).
When you said “I could look at that stuff all day,” it made me think that things like those photos, NFL Films and the halftime hilites on MNF back in the ’70s were very inspirational to me as a young athlete. Those images of guys like Chuck Foreman, Larry Csonka, and yes, even The Juice made me want to go out and smash through defensive tackles. Who’d have thunk that when I was finally able to play organized tackle football, they’d make me a defensive tackle?
Damn, I had that NFL Lunchbox in 2nd grade! 70 bucks……….wow!
So NFL benefits from the ruling yesterday, possibly.
That’s what I was wondering.

Jim Leyland smoked in the dugout until right about last week, when a Detroit (or maybe Michigan) law made smoking in the workplace illegal.
Smokey Jim has agreed that he will comply with the law.
(sorry, no linky – I’m lousy at the tags – didn’t we used to have idiot buttons for stuff like that?)
And in the Minnesota case, they also want to be seen as the parent (of which the Vikings are a subsidiary of sorts) because if the Williamses work for the Vikings, they are bound by Minnesota law, which would most likely void their suspensions. If they work for the NFL, I would think they would be more likely to be bound by New York law, which might allow the suspensions to hold up.

Yeah, that’s what I was saying. I was pointing out their hypocrisy. To the best of my knowledge, the NFL argued that they were X amount of separate entities in order to dodge the antitrust suits, but now they’re arguing the opposite. The legal system’s giving them cake then letting them eat it too.

That the NFL did, in fact, violate Minnesota law but the players were in no way harmed by that fact.
In other words, they’re probably gonna get suspended…

That’s American Needle’s position but not for that reason.
American Needle is saying the NFL is 32 separate entities because (under antitrust law) 32 entities may not be allowed to collude to sign an exclusive agreement.
If the NFL is a single entity (which is their position) they can sign an exclusive agreement because its not collusion (you can’t collude with yourself).

The relevant finding is that “Defendant NFL is Plaintiffs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams‟s employer for purposes of DATWA.” – page 15-22.
My only comment (I’m a lawyer but not a US lawyer) is that the test the judge employed to consider whether the NFL or the Vikings is an employment law test.
The same test they would use to see if you’re an employee or an independent contractor.
I don’t think the same test would apply in American Needle. The court here was looking at employment conditions and the fact that the NFL and not the teams mandates employment conditions for players.
This is probably not relevant to whether it acts as a single enterprise for antitrust purposes. Antitrust law has its own set of tests, not the same as employment law.

Here’s link that created great brand identity for the NFL. This book was the most popular thing in my room for a loooong time. They had helmets splashed all over the place, logo, fun facts, activities, games, puzzles… a lot of fun for a couple of bucks from the bookmobile!
It had these pages that were perforated into four sections with each showing a particular teams’ helmet and a generic player dressed in the uniform (I think some were featured here on UW a while back). There were also illustrations of a player in a uniform from the ’20s and a modern player in his uniform to show the advances in uni-tech. VERY cool stuff for a 12-year old and went a long way toward establishing my aesthetic connection with the NFL.

Thinking about it again, the USFL case might be a better analogy than Starcaps. Speaking of the O’s, on the 26th of June they’re “celebrating” the 40th anniversary of one of their championships. They’re playing the Nats (“Battle of the Beltways”)and both teams will be wearing throwbacks. Nats will be dressed as Senators. Interesting, because I thought the Rangers owned the rights to the Senators logos, etc.

I have photo that is my favorite shot of that uni. Tim Brown carrying the ball against (I believe) the Browns at Franklin Field. I’ll dig it out, scan it and post it this afternoon when I get home. Maybe 3:30 CDT.
It’s a really good look at the uni…a stripe fest, if you will.

Eight minutes late, but here’s the photo…

Just always liked it. Classic pose, interesting combination of colors…

Wow, you really see the enormity of those shoulder loops in that shot. They almost extend right down to the pants. Great pic indeed.
Just for fun, the flip side of that SI clipping.
–Charley Taylor when he still was a running back.
–Steelers’ gold insert sleeve jerseys (although the sleeves don’t show).
–A lesson in how a gloomy day can skew colors in older photos. We might think the ‘Skins wore maroon jerseys. We would, of course, be wrong.

Isn’t Cookie Gilchrist in this group of MVPs?

Anyone want to do some research?
A while back a friend and I got to wondering about the most common jersey number for MVP’s in MLB, NFL, AFL (before merger) and NBA.
I thought maybe #32 (Sandy Koufax, Elston Howard, Jim Brown, Magic Johnson).
Also #6 seems like it might be good choice, too (Stan Musial, Bill Russell…)
Got any other ideas?
I don’t know the answer. Just wondering.
—Ricko
seems like #23 in hoop might be up there
Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Stu Grimson, Ryne Sandberg, Kirk Gibson…
I know I said this last night, but everyone was most likely sound asleep. I’ve started a site dedicated to uniforms tweaks, simply titled link. If you could head over there and leave a comment or two so I don’t appear to be talking to myself, I’d be very grateful. Hopefully you’ll find something you like or can submit a tweak of your own!

In the “2 games in 1 day” sense, yes. But it’s still the separate-admission sort.

On the smoking topic, our own Mr. Lukas did an excellent piece a couple of years ago on this very subject:
link
One of the things that always intrigued me when I was younger was watching ballgames and seeing the attractive young ladies in the stands shown in the background of low-angle shots, many of whom would be smoking seductively. Crazy, I know. It would be great to watch them in the better detail of HD with a big screen. Once again, I was born a generation or two too late.
For those who wonder about the origins and use of “Fearsome Foursome”:

And, no, the buffalo the helmet isn’t blue, or two-tone. The color on that photo appears to have been “hand augmented” a bit in places, and I think the artist just screwed up. I cropped another Bill out of the photo and his helmet buffalo is clearly red.

I think I had about 15 copies of that card in my collection back in the day. I kept them all. (Sadly, no longer around). There were several guys, in all sports, in those old collections, who would show up in every other pack it seems. I had about 12 Bob Rule’s from the ’71 Topps NBA tallboy collection. Usually journeymen type guys.
Good grief, I hate it when Lukas gloats on the Mets. They’ve hit 3 HRs off Sanchez. It’s like BP out there. Do we get to at least throw Timmeh at you? Yeah, I think Sunday. So at least the Mets will only take 2 of 3.

Is it me, or are the NHL Play-offs top draw this year, both in terms of calibre of play and aestethetically (sp?). All four second round match ups are eye pleasers – if I had to rank from top to bottom . in terms of uniform appeal – I would go
1. Chicago /Vancouver
2. Detroit/San Jose
3. Boston/Philadelphia
4. Montreal/Pittsbugh
and yet even the series I rated last – is still great.

Be glad you’re not facing Zito. Can’t believe I said that given his career to date with SF. But, 5-0 and a 1.49 ERA! He’s just untouchable this year, so is Timmeh. Now Cain has found his groove. No doubt, the best rotation in the game. If we can just hit…

Because he took $36 million and sat on his ass.
Andy MacPhail once said there are two kinds of players who sign big contracts. One starts figuring out how to spend the money; the other starts figuring out how to earn it.

Yep, best uni match up has to be Boston and Philly. The yellow and orange is simply awesome. The Bruins edge out Philly for best uniform overall though.
I simply can’t get over how sweet those red Falcons helmets look with the gold center strips. They actually look like two copper strips, or, brass gaskets.
Can’t think of it now, yet what other NFL teams honored their state college teams, team rivalries in this way on the helmet, if any? Just such an original cool idea.
Nothing against Lebron wanting to honor MJ, but if a number is going to be retired league-wise, shouldn’t No. 6 be retired before No. 23? I mean, he did win seven more championships and have a profound impact on the way basketball is played and how athletes are viewed (I’ve been rooting for the Knicks for the last half-century. You have no idea how it galls me to speak highly of someone who plays for Boston’s basketball team, the real evil empire).

The games in Philly look fantastic. The ones in Boston? Big downgrade. It’s too bad both teams don’t wear their Winter Classic unis for those games.
I’d have to agree with Endive’s assessment. Even though Philly/Boston is more visually pleasing tonight, I’d say that overall, Chicago/Vancouver is the top match-up. I’d maybe flip-flop the #2 and #3 choices, but that’s a close one. I think San Jose’s unis are highly underrated. Black & teal’s easy to hate.
Montreal/Pittsburgh really at #4? Yeah. Habs, of course, look great. But the Pens really need to lose the vegas gold.

NFL coaches used to smoke on the sidelines all the time. Quite common. Norm Van Brocklin, both in Minnesota and Atlanta, probably was the heaviest smoker among them. Van Brocklin once said he hated artifical turf because there was nowhere to put out his cigaratte.

The LSU catcher’s wristband is probably a pick proof system wristband.

It generates 3 number combinations for both a coaches sheet and a player card. It can be refreshed to generate a whole set of combinations so you could theoretically have a new set of signals every inning. It can also be used for middle infielder position or regular batting signals as well.
