Every time I think we’ve hit the bottom of the wire service barrel, a new batch of great material appears on eBay. My continued thanks to Mike Hersh and Larry Wiederecht for their assistance in compiling these images.
Now then:
• In 1922, a bunch of American baseball players went on a tour of Japan, and they got some awesome sweaters for the trip. Interestingly, the circular “US” patch is blank in this shot.
• Not sure what I like best about this 1928 women’s hoops team — the team name, the way the name is rendered on the jerseys, or the assortment of socks.
• Four Cubbies, four different undersleeve styles: none at all, three-quarters, windbreaker, full-length. That’s from spring training, 1939.
• Love this 1959 Cuban uni.
• Don Carter, one of the greatest bowlers of all time, apparently had some interesting taste in belts.
• Dressed to the Nines shows the 1922 Giants wearing two sets red/blue stirrup stripes. But it turns out they actually had three sets of stripes. That’s the team’s 1922 starting infield, by the way — Heinie Groh, Davey Bancroft, Frankie Frisch, and Long George Kelly.
• The NHL had a bit of a cocaine problem back in 1949. Actually, that’s Hal Brown and Alan Kuntz, both of the Rangers, kissing the ice.
• Most of you know that Andy Brown was the last NHL goalie to play without a mask, and here are some great action shots of him from 1972. (As an aside: When I was a kid, I inherited my big brothers’ table hockey game, which had the old metal players. The goalies were all bare-faced, because the game had been purchased in the 1950s. So I drew little paper masks for the goalies, cut them out, and pasted them onto the goalies’ faces — except for the Red Wings goalie. I left him bare-faced, because Andy Brown was playing for the Wings at the time.)
• Here’s a very interesting official’s NOB.
• Here’s a stunner: Big Klu wearing sleeves! That’s from his short stint with the Buccos, which spanned parts of the 1958 and ’59 seasons.
• Coupla interesting things about this Phillies shot: the cap logo is actually a patch, and note how the placket pinstripes don’t matchup with the pins on the rest of the jersey. Yankees jerseys of that era used the same design.
• Look closely at this cavalcade of striped stirrups and you’ll see that the ’rups have a line of horizontal stitching running slightly above the ankle. Never seen that before. Robert Marshall, ask the TCK folks what they know about that, wouldja please?
• Very nice sleeve patch being sported by the 1942 Columbus Redbirds.
• Double your pleasure: two unusual on-field happenings in one wire service photo transmission.
• Here’s a weird one: Del Crandell of the Braves wearing what appears to be a Cardinals helmet. The photo ran in Sport magazine in 1963, although it’s not clear when the photo was actually taken. Crandell was a perennial All-Star during his Braves years, so this could be from an All-Star Game.
• What’s my favorite thing about old uniforms? Texture!
My quadrennial bit of cluelessness: Nike officially unveiled the USA’s World Cup kit yesterday, which was my official wake-up call for this year’s Cup. “Hey, dumb-ass,” said the little man in my head whose job is to remind me about stuff like this. “You’re gonna need to write a World Cup column for ESPN, which should be pretty amusing, seeing as how you don’t know jack-jiggity-shit about soccer. The clock’s ticking, smart guy. Got a plan?”
Actually, yes. Four years ago I got help from a reader, Dave Dixon, who gave me his team-by-team breakdown for my World Cup column that year. He gave his knowledgeable assessments and then I gave my ignorant ones. That worked out pretty well, so let’s try it again: If you’d like to be Uni Watch’s official 2010 World Cup consultant, send me a note explaining your qualifications for the job (which should, at the very least, include a fairly thorough familiarity with all of this year’s Cup kits). I’ll choose someone within the next week or two.
As for the USA kits, they’re nice enough, but the diagonal sash is so light — wasn’t it more prominent in some of the early leaks? Disappointing. But of course that’s just my ignorant opinion.

The bar code design on the Scuderia Ferrari cars is there for Marlboro, as in the years immediately preceeding the complete ban on tobacco advertising, the Marlboro brand was displayed in the same location (and when the series traveled between countries that allowed and had banned tobacco advertising, the bar code and logo would alternate). Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro isn’t the only team to have used this approach. BAR Honda, sponsored by British American Tobacco (specifically the Lucky Strike brand) used the same method, as well as using the same logo design but with different words inside the Lucky Strike circle. The old Jordan team also used to be sponsored by tobacco (Benson & Hedges), and would replace that logo with text that said Buzzing Hornets stylized just like the B&H logo (facetiously they stated that it was because their yellow cars sounded like buzzing hornets). Correct, on both counts.
Loved those USA shirts. It is my opinion that all USA shirts should include some sort of sash across the front. Make that the signature look that identifies the US shirt. Kind of like how Argentina has the blue and white stripes and Croatia with the red and white checkerboard. You just know who you are playing.

Back when they sponsored McLaren, McLaren and Team Penske shared use of the famous Marlboro chevron livery (Penske: link McLaren:link) The McLaren pic has the barcode in the foreground, and the “Marlboro in the background. Personally,I miss all the Tobacco sponsors in racing, they were some of the best liveried cars on the grid.

Of course, nowadays Ferarri are the only team with a tobacco link – their official name is “Scuderia Ferarri Marlboro”, and they receive a *lot* of cash from Philip Morris for it. All the other teams ditched the fags association not long after the law was changed on sponsorship… On the official documentation at least, Ferarri are still advertising Marlboro
I’ve mentioned the Al Oliver – Cliff Johnson thing in the comments before.
The background – Johnson had played for the Jays before and worn 44. When he rejoined the team during the 1985 pennant drive, 44 was taken by Jeff Burroughs and 0 was taken by Al Oliver, so he took 00.
More about the “bar code” hoopla with Ferrari; other F1 teams sponsored by tobbaco took similar approaches with their “no-smokes” liveries.
Renault (when it was sponsored by Mild Seven): “Mild Seven” became “Team Spirit.” In later years, when Mild Seven had a logo that was a series of swooshes shaped like “MS,” the non-tobacco version was just an abstract pictogram of an F1 car.
Jordan (Benson & Hedges): They took different approaches. The aforementioned “Buzzing Hornets” aloong with “Bitten & Hisses” and my favorite: “BE ON EDGE” (arranged in a way that it looked like “BENSON & HEDGES” with missing letters).
McLaren (West): They changed “West” on the sides to “East” and in later years had the driver’s first name on the side.
Williams (Rothmans): I think they changed it to read “Racing”
BAR Honda: they also used a bar code and also substituted “LUCKY STRIKE” with a fancy design in the logo.
In previous years, Ferrari didn’t ue a barcode but they replaced the red chevron design of the Marlboro logo with a red rectangle and left the bottom of the logo blank, with no mention of “Marlboro.” Then they used vertical bars, but not in a bar code format.
Hmm, I kind of like the subtle sash for the USA. It’s a nice throwbacky homage to 1950, but without saying “It’ll be a miracle if we beat England this year, too.”

Never understood that, either.
Oh, I know that all those first half of the 20th century dark socks with white stirrups (even such as the Browns’ WWII era models recently available from the stirrup club) were two-piece construction. The stirrup was a separate piece that was attached to the legging, hence the large number of teams with a white stirrup at the base of a dark socks.
They didn’t have white stirrups necessarily as a design element, rather was still the “health deaI,” worrying about dyes. Or, it was that some manufacturers may simply have offered the stirrup only in white to keep costs down.
Don’t believe it was until, oh, the late 1940s or early ’50s that one-piece stirrup socks were pretty much standard. However, that band of stitching still appeared for some years afterward, and I never could figure out why. Perhaps something to do with the point where the knitting machine switches from tube mode to stirrup mode? Is it tacking the end of the tube together during the switch? I really don’t know enough about the machine, etc., to answer. But I do have a couple pair of low solid-color stirrups with that band of stitching around them. There must a technical reason of some sort.

I really like the interlocking “US” on the touring team’s hats. Very similar to Southern Cal’s baseball hat. I wish they’d use something similar to that for the WBC team. Never been a huge fan of the US+star hat.

I would love to see someone do a ‘Uni Tweak’ in regards to the crest that the US Soccer team uses. That crest is gaudy and seriously outdated. Way too 1988 for me.

I remember that too; I love seeing number 0, not least because the inclusion opens up another “regular” number and prevents some poor schnook from being saddled with something like 57 or 60.
Incidentally, most if not all Japanese teams assign both 0 and 00 as regular numbers. Traditionally they weren’t used, but in the 1980s an American (Ruppert Jones) was the first to request 00, and he got it, and then anothe rplayer from Hiroshima whose name I’m forgetting asked for 0 to symbolize his desire to restart his career “from zero”. Today, with numbers in short supply, both are assigned just like any positive integer. When players are listed in order of jersey number, 00 is considered to be “less than” regular zero, so the guy with 00 comes first.

The metal hockey players you show are from the Munro Bobby Hull Hockey game. I got mine in 1970 (still have it) and did the same thing – not only did I draw little paper masks and tape them onto the goalies, but I also drew little logos in colored pencil and cut them out and taped them onto the jerseys to cover up the generic city name that appeared on every jersey instead of the actual logo!

Hey guys, long-time reader here making his first post, with a request for help: I have an authentic 1992 Blue Jays jersey that I took into the Jays Shop at the ‘dome to get crested. I wanted Dave Winfield’s #32 on the back, and they said no problem. They called today to tell me that it couldn’t be done as he is not an active player. I told them my girlfriend’s name is Winfield and her favourite number is 32 to no avail. Are there any loopholes? Does anyone have suggestions?
I realize I could just get the number and find somewhere else to put the name on, but I’d rather get the whole thing done at once, with the Jays’ official fonts and so on. Last year I bought a jersey, had #22 applied to it, and found an outside sports store to sew Jimmy Key’s last name on it. The problem was that the lettering was too small and the cost, to sew three letters on, was $18.
I’m going to the game tonight, preparing to duke it out with the staff over this. If you have any suggestions, let ’em fly!

I think it will be noticeable if the shirt is right in front of you, but maybe not so much on TV or at a distance. I think it’s a neat idea – subtle to keep it mainly a white shirt (which Nike and US Soccer are looking to keep consistent) but with the little shout out to the historic sash design.
And the away shirt is much more clear cut about the sash look…

I think I’ll just get a refund from the Jays shop. It was something like $68 anyway, and I’m sure with that money I could just get it done myself. I’ve emailed Phil asking for contact information for anyone who could help, so we’ll see what happens.

Verizon was sponsoring someone’s team, so to get around it they formed “Verizon Racing”… not a phone company, of course… so “Verizon Racing” sponsors cars in the Sprint Cup.

Update on the Winfield situation: I sent the Jays an email this morning explaining my frustration, and just received a call. They’re going to do it. The woman on the phone said that there were some loopholes that she wasn’t about to tell me, but was willing to exploit on a one-time basis. She said that they’d been trying to get an agreement going with Winfield and Joe Carter for some time, so far unsuccessfully. They have agreements with Kelly Gruber and Roberto Alomar already (I wish I’d known that. I would have just taken a Kelly Gruber jersey to avoid this mess).

Yes, existing deals with cell phone companies were grandfathered in, but could not be extended, or changed. The two that were grandfathered in were Alltel(bought out buy Verizon) and Cingular(bought out by AT&T).
AT&T lost their fight, claiming that Cingular bought out AT&T and took on the AT&T name, so they are out of the sport now.
Verizon bought out Alltel, and changed the livery of the 12 car. But, the car is Officially sponsored by “Penske Racing” not Verizon, or Verizon Racing.
