I recently got a note from Anil Adyanthaya, who pointed out that Adam Foote’s name is represented twice on his jersey — first on his NOB, and then on the Avs’ shoulder patch, which is a foot.
“Okay,” I thought to myself. “Big deal.” But then Anil started rattling off some additional examples, like Sylvester Byrd, who played for the Falcons; Steve Bird, who played for the football Cardinals; and my favorite, Jose Cardenal, who spent a year and a half with the Redbirds.
And then he suggested some near misses:
• Wilf Starr played hockey for the New York Americans in 1932-33, but they didn’t have NOBs.
• Bill Bridges played for the Golden State Warriors in 1974-75, but the team no longer used the Golden Gate bridge on their uni during that period.
• Jim Storm played for the Hartford Whalers 1994 — too soon for the franchise’s rebirth as the Carolina Hurricanes.
When pondering additional examples, one that immediately came to mind was Johnny Podres. He pitched for the Padres in 1969, but they didn’t wear the Swinging Friar on their uniforms that season — a near miss. Podres also coached for the Padres, although I’m unsure of the specific years (anyone?). If he was coaching there in 1978, then he wore this patch, which would qualify him for full-fledged name/symbol duality status.
Of course, Podres already had his name represented twice on his jersey phonetically, but that’s a whole different list. For now let’s stick to the NOB/symbol convergence — there must be other examples floating around out there, right? Have the Cowboys ever had a player named Star? Have the A’s ever had a player named Pachyderm? Has A-Rod ever played for a team that wore a sleeve patch of a giant dick?
Much like Curtis Pride playing for the Nashua Pride, or Carlos May using his NOB and uni number to form his birthday (May 17), this is one of those utterly meaningless tropes that can somehow become all-consuming once you start thinking about them. So good luck getting anything else done today, and thanks in advance for any additional examples you come up with.
Culinary Corner: The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, which means people all over America will be having their annual rendezvous with the mint julep. But look, any frat boy can suck down juleps, especially the shitty ones that tend to be served at Derby parties (hint: If it’s being poured from a pitcher, it wasn’t made correctly). If you really want to make the Derby scene in style, prepare the dish that’s actually named after the race: a derby pie.
Technically speaking, you’re not supposed to use the term “derby pie,” because that’s a registered trademark of some annoying people in Kentucky who insist that they own the name and love to send their lawyers after anyone who thinks otherwise. (They even sued their own chocolate chip supplier, Nestlé, for putting a “Tollhouse Derby Pie” recipe on the chip packaging.) So you’ll often see wink-wink names like Triple Crown pie, race day pie, winner’s circle pie, and so on. But screw all of that — derby pie belongs to the people. Here’s how to make one:
If you know how to make pie crust, make some dough and position it in a 9-inch pie pan; if you don’t know how or just can’t be bothered, get yourself a frozen 9-inch pie shell.
Set your oven to 350 degrees. While it’s heating up, get a big mixing bowl and beat together four eggs, a cup of light corn syrup, 3/4 cup of light brown sugar and 1/3 cup of melted butter. Then add 3 tablespoons of decent bourbon (or maybe a smidge more than that, if you’re so inclined), a tablespoon of vanilla extract, a tablespoon of flour, 6 ounces of chocolate chips, and a cup of chopped walnuts.
Mix all of that together, pour it into the pie dough or frozen shell, and pop it into the oven for an hour. It’ll puff up high like a soufflé, but it’ll settle back down while it cools, which you should allow it to do for an hour or so.
It’s standard to serve each slice with a dollop of whipped cream, although I frankly think that’s unnecessary — the pie is rich enough on its own. Less traditional and even less necessary, but nonetheless delicious: this bourbon sauce, which is pretty much the bomb.
Trust me, there won’t be any leftovers.

Thank goodness. That’s an awful look, and I’m a fan of gold.
It’s funny how detailed teams have become with simple non-contact jerseys. Used to be you just threw a different color mesh net over the QB and let it be. Now it’s an exact replica of the game jersey, only in a different color.
And why does ND wear red non-contact jerseys? Why not green? You think anyone is going to buy a red ND jersey? But they would be green.

Yes, Maryland does not have enough different combinations (red, black, white). They need more to be the Oregon of the East. (That’s the standard now. No longer the “UCLA of the East” because UCLA set the standard for winning, but the “Oregon of the East” because Oregon sets the standard for looking absurd in so many different ways.)
At least Maryland is wearing its school colors (red, white, black, gold). The basketball team started wearing gold uniforms in 1981.

Paul,
Thanks for sharing Derby Pie with the masses. Having grown up in Louisville, it is definitely one of my favorite desserts. And you’re right, the Kern’s are jerks for trademarking the name. But, if I may, I’d like to share a mint julep recipe that a lot of Kentuckians enjoy:
First, make a simple syrup by boiling a cup of sugar in a cup of water for 5 minutes. Pour this syrup over a handful of mint leaves, and crush the leaves gently. Remove mint leaves from the syrup, and place in a container for storage.
Next, crush a few other mint leaves into the bottom of your serving glass. Fill the glass with crushed ice, and add a tablespoon of the syrup you just made and a tablespoon of water.
Last, dump this mixture down the drain, rinse the glass, and fill with about two ounces of bourbon (I prefer Woodford Reserve).
Thanks again Paul, and enjoy the Derby!

Amen to this. I’ve never understood why so many uni enthusiasts seem to think that white is a required part of a uniform (as a design element). If your colors are blueblack and orange, like the Bears, you don’t really need white numerals, or white keylines on your stripes, because orange will do just perfectly. Looks fine, because they have a very nicely designed uniform, but a jersey that includes only orange and blue looks stunning as well, and is more unique. RE: Target mismatching uniforms
I used to work at a Galyan’s Sports & Outdoors store (for those that know, they were awesome). We were all issued blue polo shirts and could pair them with whatever type of pants we wanted. Golf department could wear nice khaki pants, hunting could wear jeans, etc..
Well…Galyan;s was bought out by the wal-mart of sporting goods stores, Dick’s (and their management fit the name). They told us we had to wear a green shirt, but they wouldn;t supply it. In protest we decided to wear the craziest green shirt combinations imaginable. Some wore line, some wore midnight forest that looked black. My personal favorite was a golf pro’s decision to wear a green “Ping” polo shirt he was given by a rep. The unfortunate thing was that Dick’s didn’t sell Ping golf clubs. That kinda ticked off management.
To make an already long story shorter, we told management that if they wanted us to look uniform, they ought to supply the shirts for us. The next monday we each got two very boring looking hunter green shirts.

It’s not like they have a ton of different throwbacks to choose from, but those posted with the stripes (1936 I think) would have been MUCH better. I’m about as big a Bears fan possible (my basement is a testament to Chicago sports), but I just can get on board with doing a throwback that looks like they ran out of white outlining.
If I had one uni-wish, it would be for more teams to adopt non-white numerals and ditch extraneous white trim on their uniforms.
For example, I was one of the few who loved link The lack of white (in my eyes) wasn’t really a legibility issue, and I loved how unique and classic it looked because it had no white. Reminded me of 1930s football.
You do all realize that the widespread addition of white to unis in the 1950s was to…
A) Not only separate teams, but also to separate colors that didn’t naturally separate well on black and white TV…
B) Make certain things stand out and easier to read (Bears going to white numbers, for example). Way back when, Japanese umpires wore white gloves for the same reason, so their calls were instantly “trackable”, both on TV and in the ballpark…
C) Add a bit of brightness to telecasts that truly were largely shades of gray. Black stayed pretty true to itself, but offered only a few dark gray areas in it highlights. White, on the other hand, really stood out as mostly white; hence things like the white pants for the Steelers came to be. It gave, for lack of a better word, a kind of “sparkle” to the gray-black telecasts. The most memorable heroes of very, very early TV? Hoppy in black, the Lone Ranger in, essentially, white. And both rode white horses.
This, of course, is not as necessary now, and won’t be a real issue. However, if we’re honest and objective, I think we’ll see that–even in color, in HD and as good as the Bears’ throwbacks will look–that a bit of white defining the orange numbers really would make them easier to read. Won’t be even close to a major issue thesedays, and it won’t mean they should add them, but it will be a fact.
Why? Because that’s just the way the human eye processes things. Anyone who paid attention in junior high science knows about rods and cones and color value and such. Or should.
Not being combative, just taking about the opticals. And providing some black and white TV reference…from someone whose parents bought a TV in 1949 and didn’t turn it off for the next 50 years.

Think of it this way.
If we made 49 stars on a U.S. flag Bears’ orange and left one white, which of the 50 stars would our eye go to first?
—Ricko
Dark colors against gray doubleknit look terrible. (See Red Sox, Boston.) Until Majestic can figure out how to produce gray jerseys that are flannelesque, give me the white borders.
link, however, is an unnecessary white border.
I liked that Syracuse uni, too. Even the monochrome orange one, because was so throwback in nature.
And, while legability isn’t an issue with today’s TV technology (and I’m NOT saying they should have had white outlines), the fact remains that, optically speaking, a white outline does make the numbers stand out more (just a quick MS Paint to show the difference)…
link
And, yeah, Tigers’ road white outline is unnecessary. Isn’t ick, yuck, puke bad…but definitely unnecessary. Although TV very probably is the reason the Tigers abandoned the orange “D” hat logo in the mid”50’s. Before that, they wore it all the time, even at at home with the same jersey and pants they wear at Commerica today.
—Ricko
btw, the few times Syracuse wore navy jerseys in the orange-helmet-&-pants era when they wore white at home (Jim Brown, Jim Nance, Larry Csonka, Floyd Little, et al), the numbers were white with a narrow orange edge.

i think everyone knows why teams use the white. and my response to that would be, i don’t give a rats behind, boo hoo to people who complain about their hd this and that. adding that white to syracuse, in my opinion, kills that jersey, it doesn’t need it. are the numbers a little, and i mean a LITTLE bit harder to read, sure i guess, but it isn’t that bad. it isn’t hunter on navy, it is bright orange on dark navy, perfectly acceptable in my opinion. and that is football, all that is out the window for baseball where there are not piles of people. in my opinion, i am not saying i am right, just what i personally prefer, i hate superfluous white as much as i do black, and when someone shows the balls to ditch it, i will applaud it.

Testaverde in Italian means green head. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, Vinny Testaverde when with the Jets never got to play in any version of their green helmets.
Good news from the NHL – the Coyotes are OUT. And so is their crazy “White Out” which they ripped off from my beloved Winnipeg Jets.
It’s not so much that they try to call this their own, it’s the fact that their team is actually the one NOT wearing white! Sigh:

That’s basically what I was getting at. I REALLY like the orange numbers, but thing a slim outline would help.
I think the white distracts from the read because your eye is so immediately drawn to it. Optically, the contrast is obviously higher and makes it easier to pick out individual numerals from a distance, which helps statisticians in a press booth, I guess, if there are no TV instant replays, but aesthetically and functionally, I find the numerals to be ‘easier on the eyes’ without the white keyline.

NEVER mentioned what I preferred.
At all.
Was only talking about the optical realities of it, and both mentioned and showed examples.
Was giving the reason behind it.
Explaining something isn’t the same thing as advocating it.
Japanese fans may have thought their white-gloved umpires LOOKED stupid…but their calls WERE easier to see, instantly.

Chris Wing played for the Jets in 1997. Their 1997 helmet logo could be seen as having a wing.
Murray Wing played one game for the Detroit Red Wings in the 73-74 season.
Marino translates to ‘of the sea’, and obviously he was sporting Dolphins which are ‘of the sea’
Guy Lafleur played 2 years for the Quebec Nordiques who are decked out in Fleur-de-Lis symbols
Steve Shields pitched in 3 games for the Royals.
From Gregg Easterbrook’s TMQ column…
“TMQ calls this franchise the Nesharim, which means Eagles in Hebrew. Why Hebrew? That language reads right to left, and Philadelphia’s is the sole NFL logo that faces right to left. Many readers including Rachel Joplin of Blue Bell, Pa., noted Philadelphia drafted defensive end Daniel Te’o-Nesheim — Nesheim is the singular form: Eagle. So he’s Eagle of the Eagles”

Ahman Green used to wear green jerseys when he was a Packer. I always found that funny.
Believe it or not, the New York Rangers drafted a guy named Joe Ranger in the 10th round of the 1986 Entry Draft. Phil Esposito, the Rangers’ GM at the time, said, “I liked the kid’s name.” Interesting, in that Espo also posted a sign in the team’s dressing room that stated, “The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back.” Clearly, not in this case.
The Oregon Ducks had a linebacker named Wesley Mallard.
