Bowled Over and Over

pin.jpg

On Saturday I hopped in the car with my buddies Shane Arbogast and Friederike Paetzold (yes, they win the award for the couple with the most syllables). We were heading upstate to meet up with our friend Robert Vickers, who has a house up in Barryville. I’d been told that some bowling would be on the agenda, which is always a good thing, but I had no idea it would end up being one of the best bowling experiences of my life.

Things started getting good as we drove through Port Jervis, where we happened upon the PJ Bowl and decided to stop in for a look. The lanes were being conditioned, so we couldn’t do any pin-bashing, but we ordered a round of beers and enjoyed looking at the groovy signage, the gorgeous floor tiling in the ladies’ room, the checkerboard lockers, and the photo of how the place used to look.

I loved the beautiful masking units but was surprised that they didn’t include lane numbers. “Yeah, that’s just the style of these masking units,” explained Fred, the manager. “We tried adding little number signs to them, but they looked like crap, so we said the hell with it. We’ve only got a dozen lanes, so I figure if we say, ‘Okay, you’re on lane 7,’ you should be able to figure it out.” Fair enough.

But the PJ Bowl was just a warm-up. Soon we arrived in Barryville and met up with Robert who took us across the Delaware River to Shohola, Pennsylvania. That’s where I had my first of what I hope will be many, many encounters with Rohman’s.

As you can probably tell from that photo, Rohman’s used to be a hotel. The ground floor is an incredible bar — one of the best I’ve ever had the privilege of drinking in, complete with a coal stove (burning good Pennsylvania anthracite, natch), lots of beautiful pressed tin (much of it peeling just so), countless old cloth patches in various states of nicotine stainage, a pool table over in the corner, and — most notably — the oddest bar stools I’ve ever come across. As you can see, they sort of fold up against the bar, but each one is on a hinge, so it can swing out when you’re ready to park your keister. The whole thing reminded me of a tractor seat, sorta-kinda, and I couldn’t stop looking at the curved stems — so cool!

The bar would’ve been enough to keep me happy for the rest of the weekend, but something much better awaited us upstairs: a room with four very old bowling lanes. How fantastic was this room? Let me count the ways:

• No automatic ball-return or pinsetter here, kids — we had to do all of that manually. While two of us were bowling, the other two were down at the far end of the lanes to act as pin monkeys. I’ve bowled in places with live pinboys before, but this was the first time I’d set the pins myself, and it was quite an experience. After each shot, the first task is to hoist the ball onto the ball-return track. Then you have to step on this little foot pedal that’s set into the end of the lane. The pedal activates a series of mini-spikes that raise up out of the floor — you use these to set the pins (each of which has a little recessed hole at its base for just this purpose). Of course, being down at that end also provides a bird’s eye view of the pin-bashing. Then, after a frame or two, we’d trade places — the bowlers would walk down to the lane pit and the pin monkeys would walk back to the front of the house.

• Each ball-return track was equipped with a Safe-T cuff — basically a speed bump to slow the ball down at the end of the track. Never seen this particular version of it before. Very cool.

• Each pair of lanes had its own deco-ish ashtray column, featuring this magnificent logo.

• The scorers’ tables had these really nice Brunswick bases.

• Each lane had its own numbered lamp hovering just in front of the pins, and each lamp fixture was connected to its wiring by something called a tubelet — never seen that particular piece of hardware before.

• The back wall of the room had recently been repainted — except for one spot.

• Gotta love the seating area, including the spectator chairs. Also, note the Xmas tree in the far-left corner — a nice touch in April.

• Behind the chairs: your own private jukebox.

• Brunswick’s original blueprints for the room are hanging on the wall! I was particularly intrigued by the note at the bottom, which says the lanes were “Pennsylvania Style.” Scott Little, do you know what that means?

Old-school scoresheets, natch.

• I don’t know if it was the time of day or the room’s orientation or what, but there were these incredible shafts of sunlight coming through the windows at odd angles, bathing everything in this really nice glow (which was occasionally augmented by amber beer shadows). Just made everything seem that much more magical.

It all made for a very happy group, although I think one of us was a teeny bit happier than the others.

Afterward, we went back down to the bar and shared prime rib, lamb chops, and a burger — a perfect capper to a perfect day.

One odd footnote to all of this: The following day — i.e., yesterday — we went out for a country drive and saw a group clustered around a fire. At first we thought it was a bonfire, or maybe a pig roast, but it turned out to be something much more bizarre: A local Boy Scout troop was disposing of old American flags by burning them. Yes, I realize that’s the proper protocol, and maybe lots of you participated in similar rituals with your own Boy Scout troops, but it still seemed completely surreal to me. I shot a few mintues’ worth of video so you can see for yourself (I embedded it below because embedding is fun, but you can see a larger, higher-def version of the clip here):

Not a bad weekend, right? Hope yours was as enjoyable as mine.

Win Some Free Stuff (but not from me for a change): With the NHL playoffs upon us, longtime Uni Watch pal Teebz is once again running a playoff pool on his excellent site, Hockey Blog in Canada. “There are a ton of excellent prizes that I’ve accumulated over the year that I’m putting up for grabs, and Uni Watch readers have always made a strong showing in the pool,” he says. “You don’t need to know a ton about hockey, either.” Full details here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Zdeno Chara, who has a broken nose, wore a facemask cage the other night (with thanks to Matt Beaudin). ”¦ Interested in the latest trends in stadium design and management? Then you may want to attend this conference (with thanks to David Raglin). ”¦ Bronson Arroyo engaged in a bit of cap-based gamesmanship the other day. ”¦ Absolutely stupendous old Converse sneakers with swastika-ish tread pattern here (amazing find by Lance Smith). ”¦ Good story about UVA’s colors here (with thanks to Kevin Zdancewicz). ”¦ Interesting shot of the Islanders preparing for their team portrait (with thanks to John Muir). ”¦ Last year the Nats wore blue caps and sleeves on the road. Blue socks and catching gear, too. Now they’ve switched to red accessories except for the blue cap, which doesn’t make much sense. ”¦ Mike Pelfrey continues to wear that “Sweat It Out” undershirt, which practically looks like plastic. ”¦ Here’s a faaaascinating video clip of an antique sock knitting machine. Related item here (awesome stuff from Amy Fritch). ”¦ If the Giants are gonna shelve their helmets upside-down, shouldn’t the little name labels be oriented the other way? He had green socks on underneath.” ”¦ Society for Sports Uniform Research founder and all-around swell guy Donovan Moore has officially pulled the plug on the SSUR and rebooted it as ColorWerx, a name that better reflects his encyclopedic knowledge of team colors. The rebranding includes a ColorWerx blog and ColorWerx Twitter feed. ”¦ Good DIY story from Daniel Carroll, who thought it would be good for his senior baseball league to have a scoreboard: “And then last year I remembered that my dad had built a scoreboard when I played baseball in the front yard as a little kid. I went downstairs to chase after it, and sure enough, it was there, so I took it along to our next game. I bought some cardstock and printed up some numbers and boom — scoreboard. But I wasn’t satisfied with it, so I made some adjustments. Now this year I’ve decided to rebuild the scoreboard completely and improve some things. I just painted it green (no pictures yet) and I’m starting to prepare painting on the inning numbers. Also, I have a lot of room at the top of this board, and I can’t decide what to do with it. I could cut it off completely, but I was thinking about painting our league logo on it, or painting an Ebbets Field-like Shaefer ad on it (or perhaps something more local, like Rainier or one of the Seattle-area microbrews).” ”¦ Remember how CC Sabathia changed his cleats in the middle of the first Yanks/Sox game? Turns out he also makes bobbleheads. Here’s a video about him (with thanks to Nicholas Kowalski). ”¦ Brett Crane notes that Angels pitcher Matt Palmer has “Amen” on one side of his glove and “In His Name” on the other. ”¦ After all the build-up, UVA’s new football uniforms turned out to be pretty basic. Jeff Barak says it’s CCM’s Mike Modano jersey treatment. Details here. ”¦ No photos, but several readers noted that Cards catcher Nick Stavinohva was wearing a red catching helmet on the road, instead of navy, and also appeared to be wearing Yadier Molina’s gear — his chest protector collar had “Yadi” on it. … New uni components making their on-field debut yesterday: the Rays’ baby blues and the Giants’ orange-brimmed caps. ”¦ Someone over on the Chris Creamer board found a leak of the Nats’ stars/stripes cap, which is consistent with what I’d been told last month — white crown, colored brim.

The Nationals sort of look like the Cardinals on the road. I don’t have a problem with the sleeves and socks not matching the color of the hat. Any idea why they changed the color scheme this year?

The look is a bit odd, but it really looks weird when Pudge visits the mound, and is wearing his red gear including red helmet:

According to the last paragraph in this post, the Nationals considered three different hats before settling on the original Navy road hat when they introduced the script road uniform last year…

Sorry, you’re right. One team had light blue tops and the other had dark blue pants. Both wore white in some fashion.

hey guys and gals, went to my local sporting goods store in Philadelphia (not modells or dicks) after my 4 year old daughter had her first t-ball game on saturday morning. I had gone to look and see if they had some youth stirrups. i looked around in the store front, and nothing. her jersey (read: t-shirt) is gold. I then proceeded to ask one of the workers if they had any, after seeing a while shit-ton of twin-city knits products on the wall. she went upstairs to look and to my surprise, she came down with a pair or gold youth stirrups…JUST RIGHT! now for her game this saturday, she will be the sharpest dressed on the field. I will post pix when i upload them from my camera.
God Bless Lloyd Sixsmith’s, and stay away from Modells and Dicks!

    boy scout footage was cool

fyi – it’s called a ‘flag retirement’ ceremony; and while im sure the boy scouts know what they’re doing, i had always heard that the star field (blue part) should be removed and after the red and white stripes have been consumed, then the blue field is placed onto the fire last

looked like they were dunking the flags in kerosene or gasoline and setting them ablaze

I really that shot of the bowling pins basking in the soft glow of sunlight. Great picture!

No photos, but several readers noted that Cards catcher Nick Stavinohva… appeared to be wearing Yadier Molina’s gear – his chest protector collar had “Yadi” on it.

The ESPN commentators actually mentioned it, having a good chuckle over the name “Yadi Stavinoha.”

Ah, just as I suspected/feared on Friday, UVA’s new pants feature ass stripes AND a “Virginia” wordmark tramp stamp. Silly.

I didn’t see the ass stamp on the UVa unis. It also doesn’t make sense that their truck has the Nike swoosh on it. Yeah, I know Virginia is fitted by Nike, but the truck isn’t. I doubt the apolstry is done by Nike, so why the douchbag-ary? Probably a stupid question, we all know why.

I’ve been a Scout leader for several years, and I’ve seen a lot of flag retirements. And you are describing the most popular way of retiring a flag – cut the stripes apart, burn them, then burn the field of stars. But the Flag Code just says something about doing it quickly and with dignity, so I guess this method would meet those requirements. But it’s definitely something I’ve never seen before.

I was once at the retirement for a giant flag – 40×60 feet or something close. Let’s just say that that much polyester doesn’t burn quickly or cleanly (cough, choke, gasp).

Ouch, I’m sorry. never did one that big in my time in the scouts.

But you’re absolutely right, there’s no set rule. Some groups do long drawn out things, but the one my troop did when we had a pile of flags we needed to retire for people was to just lay them gently on the fire, still folded. When you got 5 or 10 to do, a long drawn out process for each flag is not what you want.

    Road trip heaven.

Soo much beauty and history and goodness.

The picture of your friend Friederike sitting near the checkerboard lockers looks like a composition of an Old Master painting…only, you know, in a 1960’s bowling alley.

Oh, I won these stirrups last week:

    link

Does anyone know what team they might have been from? I was a bit dishartened when I got them and found out how short they are. They are 100% cotton and only come up to mid-calf which stretches them out greatly.

Good for the U. of Wisconsin, which has cut ties with Nike due to the latter’s labor practices.

Call me crazy, but I thought Wisconsin was primarily an Adidas school. I tried to do some quick web-browsing, but everything I’m finding indicates the Badgers’ most recent football, men’s basketball, and even their men’s hockey uniforms were Adidas, as I thought.

Did the contract with Adidas expire? Did Wisconsin sign a contract with Nike and terminate it before they took the field/court/rink in Nike uniforms?

Or does this anti-Nike stance only apply to Wisconsin fan apparel made by Nike? I did notice if you go to the team shop linked from the official Wisconsin Athletic Dept website, you can search by brand…the Nike page is blank.

That’s it – Wisconsin’s deal with Nike wasn’t to equip the teams but for merchandise. So not as bold a step as if they had faced down Adidas, but no less a positive one.

Ewww…I hate the new star and stripes caps. And this is from someone who loved 2008s and 2009s.

but how are you a stro fan in st. looie? and on the second holiest of holy days (home opener day)…isn’t that (wearing houston gear) askin for a beatin?

No doubt its been mentioned that Joe Girardi switched from 27 to 28 this year (keeping the team goal on his back), but I just saw that for the first time this morning.

I know that’s why LaRussa chose 10 when he came to St. Louis. Are there other managers out there that have numbers connected to their team’s number of world championships, or other team goals? (and yes, I know Zim uses his years of MLB experience)

That Nats stars & stripes hat is from the Promotions Schedule portion of their site. Not sure if that’s a fan fashion version or a replica of what we’ll be seeing on-field.

Look like generic ones, probably for some little leaguer or something.

I’m not a fan of contrasting-color brims in general, but there are some that I think look good (A’s, Indians, Braves, Orioles, to name a few).

Those new Giants caps really don’t work. Not so much in this pic, but I thought they looked terrible as I was watching the game last night. Maybe if Zito was pitching and showing off the stripèd socks it would have been a different story.

At least Giants actually have WORN that cap regularly at one time.

As opposed to the Twins, who pulled a fan cap off the shelf and christened it their “nifty new, really well thought-out road cap”.

Don’t get me wrong. Not saying new Twins roads aren’t a good looking uniform. There simply is absolutely positively nothing original, unique or distinctive about them.

I was born in Louisiana, been an Astros fan since I was able to understand what baseball was thanks to my dad growing up listening to the Colt .45s/Astros. Even lived in Houston for 3 years before moving up here because my girlfriend (Long Island Girl/Yankees fan) lived here.

As for being a ‘Stros fan here in Birdland…yeah, I have been told that I had to be a Cards fan now that I live here, and I have also been told to “go back to your home country!” by the so-called “Greatest Fans in Baseball”.

Wicked cool retro 4-lane bowling alley. I bowled the best game of my life on an old 4-lane alley at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Must be the old lanes or something. Way more fun than any modern “cosmic bowling”.

The best part of waking up…is bowling in your cuuuup (or on uniwatchblog).

Pennsylvania style, not sure what that means off the top of my head. But, I would venture that it is in reference to the settee layout. Since all sanctioned lanes are uniform, I wouldn’t think there are “styles” of lanes. So the only changeable parts are of the settee. Brunswick made those benches you were sitting on, (think I can see the Brunswick label on them). Brunswick also probably brought in the theater seating, and obviously the scorers tables. You could changeup the ball racks too with different features.

I’m skeptical of that supposed Stars/Stripes cap leak. It doesn’t look like the same style cap that have been used the last couple years. It’s definitely possible that that will be the color scheme or that they changed the cap stype completely but I doubt the latter.

It’s funny you mention “Late ’40s” because as soon as I had the stirrups in hand, i thought they were from the 40s more than the 50s-60s as the auction stated. The construction and material is close to other items I have from the 40s back when I was collecting WWII items.

    fyi – it’s called a ‘flag retirement’ ceremony;
A few years ago, I was an advisor to our local Scout troop. The Scoutmaster was a real gung-ho, Great Sanitini, Scouts is a paramilitary organization. He really pushed us to let the boys do a flag retirement ceremony. We agreed, and he scheduled it as part of a church picnic. The Fourth of July picnic. There we were, in the full regalia, a dozen kids and a handful of adults, burning flags on the Fourth of July, in a church parking lot on a heavily traveled street in Sugar Land, Texas.

    Now THAT was surreal.

It had already been touched before in an earlier comment but it is called a flag-retirement ceremony. There is a big difference in the two. And it had been touched that there are multiple ways to retire a flag. As long as it is in a dignified manner, it doesn’t matter the method. You can find a lot of different ways online. I used to work in a boy scout camp and we have had to retire flags many a time, and it is a very sobering moment and you have a good video of it.

I know that’s why LaRussa chose 10 when he came to St. Louis. Are there other managers out there that have numbers connected to their team’s number of world championships, or other team goals?

In LaRussa’s case, it is coincidence. He wore number 10 as manager of the White Sox and Athletics before coming to St. Louis.

I doubt it. They’ve gone to using the original logo on all of their playoff merchandise- I wouldn’t be surprised if the slug is only worn on the road in the playoffs.

The slow moving away from navy blue to red is probably in preparation for getting rid of the navy caps and helmets next season. Which would be a shame. The red at home and navy on the road distinction was great. Now the Nats look like the Cards and Sox on the road.

Speaking of the Red Sox: As a Sox fan, I would like to see them drop the red alternate jerseys (relegating them only to BP use) but keep the navy alternate jerseys; return to the navy blue sleeves; and make all the players show some red sock (with or without the stripes they used to have). Is burial a suitable alternative to burning? I’m kind of surprised that burning is still the preferred method because

    B) the negative view most people have of flag-burning

Of course, how big a hole do you have to dig to bury link?

Just thought I would throw in my two cents regarding logo creep, though not on uniforms. I am a cameraman at my church, which was holding a conference this weekend. Several times they would go to a guy leading songs while playing our piano, which is a Steinway and Sons Grand (it was donated). I was scolded numerous times by our video producer for zooming in too far on the singer and cutting off the Steinway and Sons logo on the side of the piano. I was told it was “very important that people know we have such high quality musical instruments.” My mind immediately morphed that logo into a swoosh and I “unintentionally” zoomed in only on the logo at one point since I realized that was the most important part of the conference.

What a story. Great to see you in print again, Cort.

Damn. What about those Twins uniforms today. And outdoors. And a win. Sweet.

Those new Giants caps really don’t work. Not so much in this pic, but I thought they looked terrible as I was watching the game last night. Maybe if Zito was pitching and showing off the stripèd socks it would have been a different story.
Nah- the GMen hats look -great.- And Z pitches tonight; assuming he gets out of the first inning, some great hosiery shots for sure.

I said it to Paul, I’ll say it here- sure looks like Adidas influence in the socks. (Just like the Patriots, whose three-stripe socks appeared when Adidas had their logo on the unis. Hmmm.)
49ers had three stripes in the ’50s.
    Colts, too.
So did Bears (before adding white edge).
Giants in ’47, when they returned to black and orange (as has been mentioned here many times).
Cubs from at least 40s thru ’56.
    Original Padres in ’69.
    I could go on.

Seeing some kind of adidas creep is a serious reach.

I dunno, Rick. Looks like a link to me.

    Curse you, Adolf Dassler!
That’s how the Bears white jerseys were striped when they schneidered the Redskins 73-0 in the 1940 NFL Championship Game. Pretty sure that was long before adidas was around.

And the 49ers wore three white sleeve and sock stripes when Harry Truman was president.

Adidas took a very common uni stripe and made it their own. Not the other way around.

Today’s Twins game was a thing of beauty. Red Sox gray road jerseys versus the Twins cream throwbacks, all played outdoors. Does it get any better?

The Twins home cream 1961 unis were gorgeous today. They should wear those for every game at home. They have nice current unis – steady since 1987 – but this would be such a wonderful upgrade! The Twins have great fans and this ballpark could really enhance watching baseball in the Twin Cities.

Yeah, the Dassler brothers parted ways after WWII so adidas didn’t exist before then.

But you do know that I wasn’t serious, right?

It’s nice to see the Phillies stay consistent in their attire: the creams get worn in home day games, the pinstripes get worn in home night games. Have they varied at all from that protocol since the “fauxbacks” were introduced?

Yeah. So how ’bout that link?

Really digging those link. Cuz, y’know, jerseys where you actually have the ability to read the players’ numbers has been done to death.

    Pretty sure, yeah. ;)

But, y’know, every once in awhile that tired old theory about a second set of three stipes on grassy knoll DOES re-surface…and I’d hate to see it get started again. All that stuff about the Cubans, and The Mob, and the rumors that JFK was about to sign a shoe deal with Puma…

so…that’s FOUR teams today in cream (mets, thankfully, were idle)…g-men (sans orange brim), native americans, fightin’s and the twinkies

that’s gotta be like some sort of record in the doubleknit era, yes?

Dude, that was the BOSTON Patriots, not the NEW ENGLAND Patriots. Sheesh.

New Mexico state is rocking the ‘rups with style; team colors in the red sox pattern, too bad they went BFSB on their tops.

I work at a bowling alley and we have those same masking units, but with a lane number treatment. Also, a couple years back we changed the panel in the triangle to make it more unique. I’m going in tomorrow; I’ll take some photos.

Speaking of 101 (was going to post this anyway, but nice segue, Ricko), DirecTV channel 101 is offering some consolation for those of us who are missing that free MLB Extra Innings preview. April 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 10:30am Eastern, there is free Indian Premier League cricket. Enjoy.
