As you may recall, an old Packers dickey — just like the one Donny Anderson was wearing in the aftermath of the Ice Bowl — was recently auctioned off on eBay. I meant to bid on it, but the auction closed while I was curling in Duluth and I flat-out forgot to bid. I’ve spent the last two weeks kicking myself over it, especially since the sale price was plenty reasonable.
Turns out I needn’t have worried.
Rather amazingly, the guy who won the auction was Uni Watch reader Jeff Fedenko (who you may remember from this entry nearly two years ago). Once he received the item from the seller, he decided to give it to me as a late-breaking birthday present. Good thing I neglected to bid on it — I would’ve been bidding against Jeff.
Jeff lives in Brooklyn, so yesterday afternoon I biked over to his place and tried on my gift. It’s a beauty, especially the magnificent tagging. A unique item, and in Uni Watch colors to boot!
Thanks again, Jeff. Uni Watch readers’ generosity of spirit never ceases to amaze.
And that wasn’t the only vintage Wisconsin-related item I was given yesterday. On the way to Jeff’s house, I stopped in to visit my friend (and co-Foreword) Liz Clayton. She’d been out of town during my birthday, so until yesterday she hadn’t had a chance to give me this super-cool container of salve. I love that the brand name is “Consin.” And look — still salve-y!
Meanwhile: New ESPN column today — the annual MLB season preview. And the curling column should be running tomorrow.
Plus I’ll miss the Mets getting swept by the Phils, so it’s a win-win: Some friends and I will be rattling around Scotland during the last week of May (arriving in Edinburgh on the 22nd, leaving on the 30th, all over the place in between). Sorry, no Uni Watch party on this trip, but we’re looking for some sporty things to check out: rugby, soccer, cricket, curling, whatever (except golf — not our scene). If anyone on that side of the pond has suggestions, please give me a shout. Thanks.

Those lacrosse pictures are great. One of the teams in the series of pics are the old Scarborough Saints…brown and yellow unis!!! Looked great! And I spent many hours of my life in that arena (Mid-Scarborough Arena)…thanks for the memories!

As long as we’re bringing up the O’s jersey … hard to tell if it’s just angle, but the “s” looks different as well – less cartoony. To be more specific, look at the shapes formed within the letter – old s had a small white triangle on top, and large o below; the new jersey – in that side-by-side comparison – appears to be the opposite.
On a slightly different note … I’m guess the change of swoosh direction on Tiger was an attempt to avoid court orders by the “artist”? (it still looks like the right side of my shoe, though)

I believe small changes have been made throughout. I only highlighted the “o” to “l” transition because it was the most visually apparent change.
Only a matter of time before the O’s bring back their orange jerseys as the Giants did this year. The O’s have much more tradition with them (generally 1971-1991 with a few years without them) and they’ve been wearing orange BP jerseys for a while.
Add Dayton to the list of teams wearing black when it’s not a school color. School colors are red and blue. What a waste. Would you make the American flag black with red and blue trim too?

I tend to wear a cap for most of the cold-weather months. Yesterday, though, I was engaging in a bit of vanity: I had bad bike helmet-hair after biking over to Jeff’s house. I had anticipated this, so I brought a green cap, which I figured would match the green dickey.
I sort of stumbled upon that green cap by accident. My friend Carrie were running around Manhattan and she wanted to buy something at Urban Outfitters (not the type of place I’d usually shop), so I went in with her. Saw the cap and really liked it — except it had a stupid brass button on the side. Bought the cap anyway and removed the button when I got home.
It’s a wool/nylon blend but looks and feels like wool. Quilted on the inside, so it’s really warm. Cost $43ish, which was totally worth it considering what a workhorse it’s become for me.
When you go to Scotland, make sure you visit a whisky distillery. You’ll love a lot of the retro-looking equipment they have there.
Got some early spring football jersey news out of Blacksburg…
Strong rumors have VT completely scrapping their entire uniform set this offseason, and will be unveiling brand new ones later this summer. They will look like the “throwback” unis that have been worn the past few years (the white ones for 2 years, notably in the 2009 Orange Bowl, the maroon ones for the game at GT last year) but will be made using the Nike Pro Combat template. Not sure how this will go together (namely, referring to the stitching pattern on the shoulders and how that would go with the triple stripe), but it will be interesting to see. There will be one minor teak to the design, where the old-school VT logo that was on the neck of the jersey will be replaced by the current VT. Maroon will be the home, and white will be the road. No word on if they will have an orange version for the annual “Orange Effect” Game, but if the past 2 seasons are any indication, they will.

To me, the Orioles uniform script is just way too damn big! It’s also incredibly generic; the 1966-88 version had an almost consistent script width & was more subtle & IMO, better looking.

Yesterday at the SF Giants media day, they unveiled the new orange alts with the new cap. I don’t know about them mixing and matching caps, but yesterday they did confirm that alternate combo.

Really? I did not know that. Interesting. They had basically the same set from ’72 to ’80, though in one year each they had all-gold and all-green once or twice.
Guess we could check the World Series games from ’72 to ’74 and see what days they fell on.
I am more hazy on what they wore after 1980, and I am not sure Dressed to the Nines is accurate.
I think in one year they dropped the green and gold for traditional white and grey (1982), then came back with the white, green, and gold, only with OAKLAND on the jerseys and mixing the green jerseys with grey pants (a trend that I think started with the 1983 Indians).

Yup, wore forest green cleats with that road gray set in ’82. Pretty much only time since they went to white shoes in ’67 that they didn’t (had some green Riddells with the vested unis for muddy days, but they weren’t seen very often outside of spring training).
Wore white sanis in ’82, also, both home and road. And you’re right, that whole period of A’s unis seems to be mishmashed and murky (as to what they wore when).

For 2009 they had “Baltimore” on the roadies for the first time since 1972, but the letter “t” was caught in the split of the placket which was unfortunate since Majestic apparently doesn’t believe in velcro:

The good part of the new Orioles home script is happening on the left with the cleaned up transition from the o to the l. The bad, bad, bad part is happening on the right with the return of the “high r-i” which–while it is the official script–looks like crap on a stick. If only they could have combined last year’s “Ori” with this year’s “oles”…hell, by mid season, they probably will!
Also, I’ve heard that the “ore” in “Baltimore” is a little taller this year, too.

The 1966-1970 set (sans the sleeveless jersey) were the best the Orioles ever looked. It just has everything of a classic uni: unique almost-consistent width script, sharp color scheme, flannel-wool, unique appealing cap logo & nice stirrups. It just LOOKED good. Comparing it to what came after it, they just haven’t matched that greatness. That road Baltimore script is a gem.
