By Phil Hecken, featuring the memorabilia collection of Dan Martell
A few weeks ago I got an E-mail from frequent Uni Watch “tweaker” Dan Martell, who you may remember from various uni tweaks (scroll down) over the past several months during my “uni tweaks” sections, and who showed me a set of pictures from his personal memorabilia collection. Intrigued, I asked him to tell me more.
Dan, who it turns out is not only an artist (if you didn’t look at his uni tweaks, go back and do so now), AND a memorabilia nut, he’s also a black belt in karate (more on that below). Now, that in and of itself is pretty amazing, but he attained his belt at the age of 10! He agreed to pen the following, which is just a taste of his collection. Dan happens to collect a lot of things Yankee- and Blue Shirt-related, but I promised not to hold that against him.
Having not had much time to devote to UW this past week, I haven’t had the ability to really follow up with Dan about his pursuits, but I’m sure he has some incredible stories. Perhaps next time. But for now, here’s a wonderful look at Dan’s “stuff”:
Ever since I could remember I was a collector, from model cars, to golf balls from various courses, to hats and more notably sport memorabilia. For me the collection of memorabilia really picked up when I was 7 years old. My father took me to my first convention where many retired Yankee players were signing autographs from that day I have a baseball and a hat signed by numerous players. To this day I still don’t know who signed the ball and hats but yet I still keep it. I even remember going into a store to buy the team photos of the 1927 Murders Row and the 1977 World Series Championship pictures and the shop owner saying “I’ve never seen a kid who wanted these.”
Since then I have amassed a good deal of memorabilia from my favorite teams and players. But when it came down to it my collection is largely Yankee and Ranger items. As my parents have decided to sell my childhood home it became apparent that I needed to move most of my items out of the house and into my apartment. I decided to share some of my more uni-centric items with Phil and my fellow Uniwatch readers.
First up is a sign I believe my grandparents gave me. What I like about this piece is it gives an old time Yankees feel to it. I mean when was the last time you went to the stadium and saw Root Beer for 5 cents or even Meloroll or Egg Cream even for sale. As a person that loves the fact that history is so prevalent in baseball this sign just reminds me of 1920’s baseball.
Next is a sign I received one year for Christmas. This sign goes through the history of the Yankees uniform and the changes that have occurred over the years (right up the Uni-Watch alley if you ask me). Again this has the feel of old baseball history that makes me think to the days of Babe Ruth.
[Phil here. Here’s the breakdown on nine of those images:]
(1) Beginning with the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, and up through the early Highlander Days of 1904 & 1910.
(2) The uniform of today looks very similar to this one introduced in 1912.
(3) Perhaps the greatest team ever assembled, this “Murderer’s Row” uniform was worn by the 1927 Yanks.
(4) By 1938, the classic uniform of today was firmly entrenched; note the trylon and perisphere patch on the left shoulder, which was worn for the 1939 World’s Fair.
(5) In 1943, the uniform featured the wartime support patch (“Stars & Stripes”) on the left sleeve (this was worn from 1942-1945).
(6) Next up, the World Series unis of 1978 & 1981 (both against the Dodgers); note the memorial arm band in ’81 for Elston Howard.
(7) The 1996 and 1998 World Series winning teams both sported the now ubiquitous World Series patches on the right sleeve.
(8) The 2000 uniform would also be worn in a victorious World Series, taking the first “subway series” since 1956 from the crosstown Mets 4 games to 1. Note the memorial arm band for Bob Lemon.
(9) The final close up, the 2003 uniform, which would mark the Yankees last World Series appearance until 2009, when they again returned to the summit, capturing their 27th World Championship.
As the Yankees began winning in 1996 my collection of Yankee hats went into full swing. The first hat I bought was the Yankees vs Braves 1996 World Series hat followed by the victory hat. This of course was before I knew what a New Era Authentic Hat was or that patches on the side of the hats. That didn’t occur until the 1997 All-Star Game. I bought that hat and wore it for over a year until the Yankees got to the 1998 World Series. From 1999 to 2003 each year I bought a New Era cap and the subsequent victory cap (when they won). I would wear the New Era cap as long as the series lasted and then would hang the hat up in my collection. This past year was actually the first year where I did not get a New Era hat or a victory cap. Also in my collection I have an old Yankee hat my father used to wear in the 70’s and 80’s. More recently I purchased a replica 1928 Yankees hat I wear this hat occasionally. In total I have about 15 different Yankee Caps.
Even though Mark McGwire has had his issues over the last few years, as a kid I absolutely loved him and I still have continued respect for the man. Among my memorabilia items I began collecting McGwire and subsequently Sosa items. Of course at that time the whole steroids issue wasn’t as well known and as a naïve 12 year old I began following the race and collecting whatever I could get my hands on. I bought framed posters, plaques, a limited edition ceramic paintings, and various drawings.
Now one of my favorite items is from the Mark Messier retirement game. At that game I was able to buy a banner in memory of his retirement which happens to be a replica of the banner currently hanging at Madison Square Garden. The stick you see on top of the jersey is actually a signed stick by Mark Messier in commemoration for the winning goal in the 1994 Stanley Cup. When my dad came home with that stick I almost died.
And finally, although much of collecting life has been geared towards other people’s accomplishments I do have a little item dedicated to my own accomplishments. It has become my favorite piece of my collection just because I earned it on my own. I’m talking about my karate belt rack (the top of the rack has a sword my brother picked up for me while in Japan). From the ages of 7 to 15 I did karate and loved it. By the time I was 10 I had earned my black belt. Unfortunately, I ended up giving it up to center fully on golf tournaments right as I was about to take my second degree black belt test. Giving it up was one of my few regrets.
Thanks to everyone for reading. I had a lot of fun remembering all of these items. I will continue to collect and if anyone is interested in seeing some more of items just give me a shout.
So there you have it, fellow Uni Watchers. Pretty nice collection (and from the pictures, you can see Dan has a lot more we’ve yet to get into). But any questions you may have, fire away. I know many of you are also collectors (I happen to merely collect junk and bills, along with dozens of crappy replica jerseys, t-shirts and caps), and I’m intrigued by those who are serious about it.
Great stuff, Dan. Thanks for sharing. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from you (in the uni tweaking department AND the memorabilia department) in the future.
From The Squiddie Files: Ahhhhhh…the Sweet Sixteen® — or what remains of it — will be completed this weekend, as we get ready to see what survivors advance to the Final Four® (and then, the beginning of the REAL season — baseball season — starts). But before any of that, Lance Smith is here to turn back the pages of Life, and this wonderful look at college basketball before the shot clock and the SOD. Here’s Squiddie:
When it comes to sports, Life archives contain a lot of baseball, some football and everything else is hit or miss. Search for basketball and you’re just as likely to find a photo of poet Carl Sandberg (holding the ball) and his Lombard College basketball team as a photo of the practice of the 1938 Indiana basketball team. So this week in honor of March Madness I’ve just grabbed some, I hope, interesting random basketball pics.
Let’s look at some photos.
Pete Maravich and his loose socks at LSU.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor at the time) playing for UCLA.
Oscar Robertson in Cincinnati.
Wilt Chamberlain at Kansas and Overbrook.
Jerry Lucas wearing Ohio State warm-ups with a sweet Buckeyes patch circa 1960.
That’s Dick Groat playing against Temple. Groat and his Duke teammates in the locker room at the half. Groat would be drafted by the Fort Wayne Pistons but decided to play baseball with the Pirates.
US women crush Soviets in the important socks and uni competition.
Freethrows were different in 1946 (Kentucky vs. Wabash)
Everyone loves Donkey Basketball! (Except maybe the donkeys)
Bradley coeds pretend not to be ogling the Bradley unis in 1951.
Long Island University players draw up a play in practice. LIU won the NIT in 1939 and 1941. Do you think the shiny unis helped?
The best NYU could do in the NIT was two second place finishes. This team lost to St Louis in 1948.
I’m not sure what the high school Hatchets (Washington City, Indiana) did to deserve to be in Life in 1944, but they had nice unis, warm-ups, letter sweaters and a great gym.
Oklahoma State was once Oklahoma A&M and in 1951 they made the Final Four. Their unis and jackets featured an O in the middle of Aggies.
The Harlem Globetrotters in 1953. Can you believe Toledo fell for that old trick? Is this even legal?
Great stuff, as usual Squiddie. Where but UW can you find Bradley coeds, donkeyball and large Soviet women in one place? (Perhaps that’s a question to which we don’t want an answer.)
Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: OK, I’ll be honest with you — I KNOW the answer and I still can’t figure it out. Why? That’s because the pseudonymous Coachie Ballgames has a devil of a guest scoreboard today. Partial credit for even knowing the sport. Ready? Guess The Game From The Scoreboard. Date, location and final score, please, and be sure to link to your answer. And, as always, if you enjoy the game, please send me some new scoreboards! Drop me a line. Thanks!
Back again with more Uniform Tweaks, Concepts and Revisions today. Lots to get to, and if you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.
Kicking off today is Andrew Hall, who brings us his new vision for the Seahawks of Seattle:
The Seahawks rank highest on the “Redesign-Needed” poll. The 3 concepts (Home Uniform, Road Uniform and Alternate Uniform) are remodeled variations of the current look. The helmet is would have the same paint as the Jaguars, with a Silver shine on a Seahawk-Blue base. The logo would stay on the helmet, minus the white outlines. This look keeps the seperated sleeves, white bringing back the stripes in a new fashion. The head of the logo would be staring at the DBs as the Seahawks WR blow past them. The stripes on the pants represent folded wings, laying to the side of the hypothetical Seahawk body.
There is a silver pant as well as blue to offer variations and combinations. Just something I did last night. Thoughts?
Up second today is Skott Schoonover who has a few NFL tweaks for us:
Here’s a couple uni tweaks for you. I know two are the same, but I couldn’t decide which I liked the design better for, the Browns or the Dolphins. I also made a design for the Bills (with a tweaked logo), and one for the Lions (also with a tweaked shield logo). Hope you like them.
Moving along, we have Justin Wang who has a remake for the Golden State Warriors:
Phil,
Here’s a very traditionalist redesign for the Golden State Warriors, done in MS Paint.
— Justin Wang
Closing down the show today is Matt Stewart, who has a few different concepts for the Broncos of Denver:
The Broncos need only to look to their past to find the future. The “D” with the modern horse is a marriage of old and new. As far as the throwback, I wasn’t trying to recreate the old AFL uniforms, but I felt like I achieved a throwback feel with the checkered pattern on the helmet and pants.
Thus ends the tweak show for today. Check back for more next time.
That’s it for this post, folks. The Elite Eight® remain, baseball is but a week away, Tiger tees it up at Augusta in less than two weeks, the NFL Draft is around the corner, puck & hoop playoffs beckon, and the countdown to the World Cup™ has begun. Life is good.
The hurricane flooded me out of a lot of memorabilia, but it can’t flood out the memories. — Tom Dempsey
I am always amazed at how dark it looks in the gyms in those old photographs. I know recently there was discussion about filters and “what-not,” but sometimes dark is dark.

Oh, they WERE dark. Lighting in arenas wasn’t CLOSE to as good as it is today. Ever notice in older hockey photos sometimes the ink looks to be a mottled dark gray? That’s because there was not enough light hitting it to bounce back and track as white in photos.
Arenas were lit only for those in attendance. Not for TV or even photographers. And, of course, film speeds weren’t as fast, and the strobe hadn’t been invented, much less the digital capabilities of today.
I remember as a kid going to Laker games at the old Minneapolis Auditorium. So gloomy in there, even watching in person. Not to mention the cloud of cigarette smoke. The Arena where the minor league Millers/Rangers hockey teams played was even worse. Like watching a game in a frickin’ barn.
The average suburban high school gym today probably is lighted four or five times better than a typical NBA arena in the ’40s, ’50s and even, in some cases, the ’60s.
Things haven’t always been as they are today.

Gophers playing Louisiana Tech in first game ever at Target Field today. Tickets $2.50, available only at the door. Gates opened an hour ago for 1:05 game. Limit 25,000 tickets. Local news broacasting live, and crowd of people already there and buying tickets.
Last year the Twins sold 2.9 million tickets. Already this year—before the season has even started—they have sold 2.5 million. Yeah, folks ’round here are excited.

Nice job applause to Dan Martell ( a well known surname name in NYC sports radio ;-)
BTW why is are the team names creeping higher up on the jerseys? looks a bit well, creepy. I’d thought it was happening but until I saw that NYY history pic, I wasn’t doing a study to confirm my observation. Don’t like it much either.

That Seahawk tweak is actually very nice. I hope somebody from the Organization gets a look and then gets a clue. Their current uniforms are borderline grotesque

Indeed ya gotta love it Ricko. I stopped by there today and stayed for two hours. First time in. Unbelievable that it only took the Twins 50 years to finally get a ballpark they – and their fans – can be proud. The attention to detail is unbelievable.
I have a handful of games as part of a season ticket group and also bought a couple more games today while there. A Twins official told me they have already sold out 43 homes games and have sold most of the rest of the games as well. Might not mean much to fans in other cities but that kind of turnout has not happened here other than ’88 and ’92 after Series wins. And fans here have not attended an outdoor game for nearly 30 years so don’t know what an April or late September night game will be like. Put on an extra layer, grab some gloves and take a deep breath. Your outdoors where the game was meant to be played.
One more nice touch (many, many others too – link does a tremendous job of sharing images) – the club for season ticket holders is called the Metropolitan Club, in a nod to the old Met Stadium. Dump that it was it was the ballpark many of us grew up with and there are some good memories. Nice touches too in that they used the colored panel motif from the old Met at the entrance to the new Club (sort of like the old Shea panels but multicolored).
OK. Enough puffing. It IS good to be a Twins fan this year…and for years to come now.

Looks like black on my 65 inch plasma too. If so, WHY WHY WHY???
They are black according to this article:

UGLY. Moreso, STUPID. Why not pull out the red unis? I know it’s not a school color, but neither is black.
only 30% of those (granted, a very small sample size) polled didn’t like the black…40% liked it and the other 29% (i love how no one can round up properly, so percentages equal 100, but i digress) don’t care “as long as they win”
so at least 69% of those polled don’t dislike them…which explains, at least to a certain degree, why black is so prevalent in sports — if obamacare had those poll numbers, health reform would have passed 14 months ago
my bracket’s already shot to shit (so even though i picked WVA to reach the final), imo root for ‘tucky … at least the non-white color in their uniform is a school color
one thing i DO like, and im sure im in the minority, is the same color number with the gold outline (similar to the style worn by the braves or purdue wore last night)
but the black? reefuckindickulus
OK, WVU is wearing black.
Well, the kids love the dark, intimidating unis. So you gotta go with a dark color, right? Even though it isn’t a school color. I mean, after all, link just isn’t dark enough.
C’mon, link, wake up and realize the NFL is laughing at you for wearing that pansy color.

That’s funny. I HATE Kentucky (goes back to a run in I had with Tubby Smith’s wife at the Sweet 16 in Minneapolis in 2003, but I digress), but I just had told my wife I was cheering for Kentucky, even though I ALSO had West Virginia in the Final Four, and the whole hate thing.
I don’t mind the same color numbers either, but I think Purdues could use a bit more Old Gold in other parts of the unis (maybe the side panels, I don’t know). Don’t know why they didn’t do a gold alt either, was my favorite Purdue uni.

Love the NFL re-design guys. Each one looks amazing. Thank God somebody else wants the Seahawks back in their old grey helmets.I definitely like the updated Broncos.

Yep West Virginia truly sucks for pulling off this stunt – they have great colours normally……but noooooooo! they have to f%&k around with it.
I know it all about the $$$ – but why do they play so much of the final four in football stadiums – empty seats in the upper deck – is never impressive.

Hey, but the NUMBERS on those WVA black unis are navy, though (see photo)…

Because I don’t follow basketball much anymore, I have to ask: When was last time the Final Four team was played in the home town of one of the teams? (Butler’s in Indy, of course)

This from a website called “Word Correspondents.”
Gonna go out on a limb here and say English isn’t the writer’s first language (either that or it’s gone back and forth through translation software)…
One of the basketball teams who qualified for the Final Four in the 2010 NCAA Men’s Division Basketball Tournament has been revealed and it was Butler University.
Butler University celebrates its win upon defeating Kansas State with a score of 63-56 to qualify for the much thrilling Final Four of the 2010 NCAA Basketball Tournament.
After the basketball game match, Butler University’s coach Brad Stevens celebrated their victory and said: “We were going back to Indiana regardless, but we’re going to wear these hats all the way home.” Stevens cheerfully delivered a flying chest bump to one of his players signaling a job well done in winning against Kansas State.
Congratulations to Butler University for advancing to the Final Four. They will be facing the winner between Michigan State and Tennessee in the Final Four basketball game match scheduled on Saturday, April 3, 2010.

although…if the light hits it just right…
hmmm…look at mazzulla…his looks midnight blue…while butler and jones’ look black
When they showed the Butler cheerleaders – they were in blue sweaters – I wonder if Butler colours have always been black and silver?
If Duke wins, it could be three out of four adopted black uni’s teams in the final four. For those of us who hate the banality of the proliferation of black unis , this is a not good.

Nope, I’m still thinking navy. Zoom in on the espn photo about 150%, or even 400%. Check #35 which is being hit by the overhead lights. Shot you found shows number on player hunkered over, sort of, so number in his shadow.
Mentioned it only because it suprised me. But then again it shouldn’t. Makes sense they’d have kept the navy. Y’know, out of a sense of being true to their school colors (eyeroll).

Butler color’s just blue and white, as far as I know. Remember thinking about that when Colts moved to Indianapolis. Spent some time on Butler campus when I was stationed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, and I recall blue and white being the deal…cuz, y’know, I notice stuff like that (as most here would).

I agree – on closer inspection on TV – they’re navy
On a separate note, now if only the Vikings could play outdoors – preferably in Bloomington (as a kid I always liked the sound of that word) – and wear a duller , darker shade of purple – and have less than a fully enclosed stadium , so we can see the Minnesota snow covered land-scape …….. dreaming I know.
In other news, I figure you’ll all like to know that I got an A on my research paper. Woo!

Hmmm…just the other day found my VHS of last Viking game at The Met. Boring game (lost to Chiefs, 10-6), but might have to watch a bit of it one of these days.
No kidding now, just watching the highlights of Gophers-La. Tech I honestly choked up a little. Kinda like when I walked into Wrigley with my then nine-year-old son after eight seasons of dome ball. Heard in my own head, my own voice form a complete sentence thought, as if I’d said it out loud. “Oh, my God…I forgot how much I love this game.”

They used this for Shea.
Used it on that final NFL telecast from Met Stadium in ’81, too.

Let’s just say some of having been looking foward to things being back outdoors here for a long, long time.
West Virginia in black? What the hell? This looks disgusting.
They do look wrong in black but the numbers made it even worse. Just like Purdue on Friday. When Purdue was lined up for a free throw, the numbers completely disappeared. From a distance, it looked like blank jerseys out there next to Duke’s white and blue. Terrible decision, especially if you were sitting in row 2 or beyond (or on the couch).
I enjoyed those Twins commercials though. Very creative.
Imagine sitting in the upper deck of the Carrier Dome trying to read the West Virginia numbers. (The Sac Kings were just as bad from the top of the FleetCenter.)
Congratulations, Kenny.

I was looking at those. Some nice ones.
Love Justin’s work on the Golden State Warriors uniform, minus the short’s side design. Great job!
The best part of the Bradley photo is the guy in the upper right making a face for the camera while his friend cracks up. Check it out.
Anyone know wht program was used to create the
Broncos redesin? That looked mpretty cool.
