‘Look, Lou, I didn’t design the damn thing, okay?’

Screen shot 2010-03-15 at 6.10.39 PM.png

Yesterday afternoon I was kinda half-working, half-watching the Mets/Cards spring training game on my computer. At one point a Mets hitter checked his swing and the catcher asked the plate ump to get help from the third base ump regarding the swing. The third base ump gave the safe sign to indicate no swing, and that’s when I saw it.

Ugh. Had they really added white side piping to the umps’ polo shirts? I checked some recent spring training photos and quickly learned that this has been going on for a few weeks but I hadn’t noticed until now. Sharp-eyed readers may have noticed that they’ve also made some adjustments to the trim on the sleeve cuffs and collars.

But it’s the side piping that really rankles. Seriously, what is this obsession with adding side panels to officials? It always looks like shite. And in this case, the combination of the side stripes and the oddly incomplete sleeve cuff stripes makes it look like the ump is covered in loose white threads (or maybe wearing tzitzis). I mean really, who thought those incomplete cuff stripes were a good idea? What a joke.

This same template also appears to have been applied to the umps’ blue shirt. I haven’t had time to check all the other umpiring gear, but I know lots of people at Majestic are reading this, so maybe one of them will be kind enough to fill us in, hmmm?

Duluth Update: Later on today I’ll be flying to Duluth, where I’ll be getting personal curling lessons tomorrow from a newly crowned national champion. That’s Tyler George on the left in that photo — he’ll be my tutor on Wednesday. Congrats on winning the title, Tyler!

As for a Uni Watch meet-up during the House of Hearts Bonspiel, which I’ll be participating in later in the week, the few of you who’ve expressed a preference have indicated that the Friday session would be best. We’ll be curling from 3pm-9pm that day, so come on down to the Duluth Curling Club, and be sure to wear a jersey so you and the other Uni Watchers can find each other. Of course, anyone who wants to come for the Saturday session (11am-8pm) is welcome too. I’ll do my best to circulate and say hi.

March Madness Contest: As many of you know, I don’t actually give a fig about college basketball, but I know many of you do. And so does Uni Watch intern emeritus Vince Grzegorek, who’s here with his annual NCAA Tourney contest. Here he is with the lowdown on this year’s edition:

Paul says he has a closet full of swag to share, which means its time for the yearly Uni Watch Bracket Challenge. We’ll go with the most basic scoring system: Simply pick the winners of each game. Each round has a progressively higher point value. You know how it works.

To play, head over to this Yahoo page and enter the following information: Group ID# “103049” and password “stirrups.”

We found out last year that Yahoo caps the number of participants per group. So if the first one fills up, like it last year’s did, use Group ID# 145124 (with the same password, “stirrups”).

And speaking of winning, what exactly can these kids win this year, Paul?

Thanks, Vince. There will be 10 winners this year, who can choose from any of the following:

• A free Uni Watch membership.

• A Bruins Winter Classic tee, tagged as size XL (although it measures 21″ pit-to-pit, which means it’s really more like a Large or even a very generous Medium).

• A selection of eight brand-new MLB batting practice caps (Yankees home, Mets, Tigers road, Dodgers, Braves, Cubs, Rays home, A’s), all sized small/medium.

First-place winner gets his or her choice of prize, second-place winner gets to choose from the nine remaining prizes, etc.

pinter.png

Now that Scott’s fully settled in Seattle, the new membership designs are coming fast and furious (including Travis Pinter’s Croation soccer treatment, shown at right), and I’ve been mailing out plenty of finished cards too, so enrollees should watch their mailboxes. As always, you can see lots of new designs in the card gallery, and you can make the membership scene yourself here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Sad news out of Reds camp, where the team has announced that minor leaguers will no longer be required to go high-cuffed. But maybe it’s not so sad after all. Consider: If a player is required to cuff high in the minors, he’s apt to think of the exposed-stocking look as one of those annoying training-wheels things that only minor leaguers have to do, same as double-flapped helmets. Then, when they make the bigs, their teammates say, “You’re in the majors now, wear your pants down like a big-leaguer,” and then we end up with Pajama Pants Nation. So I think it’s possible that these teams that require their minor leaguers to go high-cuffed actually end up hurting the cause. Your thoughts on this? They wore these special jerseys just for this last home series. They’re supposed to be modern replicas of the teams original jerseys when they started playing hockey here 50+ years ago. They have large, football-style numbers on the front, special commemorative patches, and ANOB.” That’s arena name on back, natch. ”¦ New uniforms for the Tulsa Drillers (with thanks to Ryan Atkinson). ”¦ Here’s a great find: a 1979 newspaper item about the Phillies scrapping their solid-burgundy uniforms (awesome work by Morris Levin). ”¦ Latest baseball team slated to be wearing green tomorrow: LSU (with thanks to Chris Mycoskie). ”¦ Meanwhile, here’s a slideshow of the throwbacks that the Devils will be wearing tomorrow (with thanks to Kenny Jacobson). ”¦ Whoa, who knew Mizzou hoops had such cool practice jerseys? As for the rest of this week: I’ll handle tomorrow’s content, as usual, and then Phil will make a rare weekday appearance on Thursday (but you’ll be too hung over to notice, right?). I’ll have an ESPN column on Friday, so we’ll have limited content here on the site that day, but I think there’s a decent chance that we’ll have a photo of yours truly curling. Let’s hope I can come up with at least one shot where I’m not making a complete fool of myself.

I don’t have a problem with side piping on uniforms. For several years the Expos and Mets had stripes running from the shoulders down the jerseys and onto the pant legs. Maybe not the best look, but certainly nothing at which to take offense.

I think it’s kinda neat looking, but I think it’d work better on a baseball hat than on a football helmet.

They’ll have to have the logo on only one side of the helmet or have the bird face the wrong way on one side in order to keep the C and (apparent) A.

I, on the other hand, think it’s much too forced. At first look, I said, “There’s something fishy here, like it’s trying to look like an A and a C, but, it just doesn’t.” If you have to force it, you probably shouldn’t.

The new logo is the only good thing to come out of their identity update. Now they just need to go back to a classic style uniform with some modern touches.

Hey – does anyone have any thoughts on what Green Bay’s socks should look like with the new throwbacks?

    RE: Umps side panels

I would not be surprised if this is going to be used for Spring Training games only. Much like the players caps and bp jerseys. Remember they like to lighten it up for ST when it comes to Uni related stuff – agreed it usually looks stupid, but hopefully it will end by the time the season starts. I will say though that ever since Umps started wearing polo shirts, they have always looked bush league to me.

Good for Brad Penny, but why don’t the Cardinals get him some authentic socks? The two inside white stripes should be almost twice as thick as those on the outside.

Great to see the NJ Devils retro unis include wearing red helmets and that they seem to have the pant shell striping right. I can’t remember the NJ franchise ever wearing a nonstandard uniform, this may be a first? Gigantic Reebok logo aside, that brodeur mask is awesome.

I think it’s a shame that the devils got caught up in the ‘everything should be black’ era, there are way too many red and black NHL teams nowadays.

Any umpire can tell you that the mesh polo shirts are FAR more comfortable than the ‘old fashioned’ button down ELBECO type dress shirts- especially in the heat. The old shirts simply did not wick at all, and you would be carrying around a ton of sweat by the end of the game. Not mention the old shirts faded as a season went along – you watch any ‘classic’ game om ESPN/MLB that was played in September, and you will see how faded those shirts got – almost to the point of being white!

I don’t want to be “that guy” who says everything used to be better when he was a kid.

But umpires used to look great.

Blazers, dress pants, ties. They looked formal. They looked like they deserved respect.

For the record — I wasn’t the one to whom this design was sent. I was the one who said it looked like a rooster. On further reflection, I agree with those who said it looked like Woody Woodpecker.

Honig’s Whistle Stop (www.honigs.com) based in Ann Arbor, MI outfits MLB umpires. As an umpire and UniWatch fan, it’s always fun to go look around the warehouse and talk to the employees about the major leagues they outfit.

Anyway, I e-mailed them this morning about the shirts, and this is the response I got:

    Tim,
The MLB shirts have changed and will be the same throughout the season. We cannot sell these shirts.

They could. But would the umpires want to wear them? I’m not sure. I think the short-sleeve polos (and especially the sometimes-worn long-sleeve polos) look pretty good. The extraneous trimming is another matter altogether.

The Cardinals socks look great! Now if we can get the Red Sox to go back to the classic red with blue and white stripes (blue sleeves may be too much to hope for, they went a little “red happy” when the new owners took over).

You know, it’s not just a matter of “looking better.” The ump is supposed to be the most formal-looking guy on the field. That’s the source of his authority. In fact, back in baseball’s early days in the 1800s, the best-dressed guy in the crowd was often selected to be the ump, because he was assumed to be a gentleman, a man of dignity and authority, etc. I wouldn’t say umps necessarily need to go back to wearing neckties (although I’d get a kick out of that), but I would definitely say that their attire needs to stay on the right side of the civvies/sportswear divide. And once you put that stupid-ass piping on the sides, you’re definitely on the WRONG side of that line.

Is that a rule or just a tradition about the umpire being the most formal person on the field? I would say despite what you think of the shirt and the piping, that they still are wearing what appear to be pretty classic dress slacks (I’m sure they have some give/relief and are just designed to look classic, but still…)

All that’s wrong with the game of baseball, it just seems like this is much ado about nothing.

Probably for the same reason why Tony La Russa had Jason Motte intentionally walk Jeff Francoeur in the 8th yesterday to get to Henry Blanco. I think that they just cannot help themselves. At least Lou didn’t kick dirt and get tossed and Tony didn’t use four pitchers in the inning.

I’ve had jobs where I’ve worn a suit and tie everyday, including Friday and believe me, I understand the status and appearance that a nicely dressed person conveys. I was a little hesitant to even do a casual Friday with khakis let alone jeans (which I can wear five days a week now, although I don’t always). Even in a business casual environment, when a man wears what you would call dress casual (suit pants, dress shirt with no tie), there is an appearance of authority.

However, we’re talking about an umpire. By this logic, I guess Robbie Alomar wouldn’t have spit on that umpire had he been wearing a suit and tie!

Also, you think that the current umpire gear is comparable to pajamas and sweats? Come on! Like I said, the pants still have a very traditional look to them. It’s not like these guys are out there in windsuits.

i love ya douggie, ya know that

but you intimated an awful lot of what i didn’t say to what you THINK i might say, just by your perception of what i’m getting at

i don’t begrudge an umpire being comfortable…you may know that i recently read a book called as they see ’em (a bit of a tome, but very interesting)…so i know the shit an umpire has to deal with; he shouldn’t have to worry about the comfort of his clothes

that being said, i think the spring training gear (which is apparently going to carry over into the regular season) goes WELL BEYOND being merely comfortable and into the realm of WTF?

they don’t need to go back to the red blazers and hand held chest protectors (which i used to ump little league, btw, and aren’t that unwieldy)…but they should still dress more formally than what we’re seeing on the field

there’s comfort…and then there’s this shit…and i think that’s what paul was bemoaning in his article today…this stuff looks like shit

and it’s looking more and more “casual”…you can still be comfortable without being casual

did the look mike styczen show look better? of course it did; but you can look a helluva lot better than this new ump gear without sacrificing any comfort…even what they wore last year, which i am certain is every bit as comfortable…is better than this new stuff

if this “new look” is only for spring training, then im fine with it…but if it carries over (and undoubtedly they’ll have a whole line of jackets and pullovers with the piping for colder weather) to the regular season…then im not happy about it at all

    comfortable=good for blue
    casual=not good for umpires

Most players/coaches/parents have no idea how good of an official you are; all they know is what you look like and how you carry yourself. And the professional leagues of various sports unofficially set the standard for uniforms at the lower levels. For that reason, I don’t like seeing any move toward more casual dress from officials.
I work with officials who wear black pants on the football field instead of white knickers and to me they look like they could be any jackass who bought a striped shirt and is pretending to be a referee.

maybe there is an outlet for ump stirrups, and you don’t have to special order a minimum, but i plan on doing the same. let me know if you want to jump in on my order if you are just getting a few pairs. i would imagine betwixt a few of us we can hit a tck minimum 12.

I’ve been watching your stirrup orders for anything that would work for football. But I’d definitely be in for a few pairs if you want to put an order together whenever.
As far as sportsmanship goes, I make a mental note when I notice good sportsmanship and try to talk to the player and/or coach at some point and thank them. I’ve only been working a few years, so perhaps I just haven’t had enough seasons to become completely jaded…

My guess is MLB is trying to come up with an “exclusive” uniform for their umpires just as the NFL copyrighted their new Reebok ref duds a couple of years ago and the NBA has their whacked out officials uniforms.

Before the switch, anyone could order those prior shirts. They just wouldn’t have the cool MLB patch on them. I noted that Honig’s stated the new ones weren’t available for sale, which confirms my theory.

I was still wearing Elbeco mailman shirts at Little League when the polos started coming in the 90’s. They sure stayed tucked in better.

Yep. Definitely a link for the team on the other side of the Mississippi.

    isn’t that trax?

I think Wesley Willis has been mentioned 4 times now on this site. Not counting the kid who did those tweaks back in October.

Cole Hamels was shown speaking to the camera in a segment during the Phillies/Tigers game today wearing the Phils’ red game cap with a gray underbill…

I’m a football official, not an ump, but that said, I know that an official’s appearance makes a HUGE difference at lower levels.
    Rant over.

P.S. This fall, I plan on being probably the only high school football official wearing stirrups.
Oops, I meant to say probably the only football official *in Minnesota* wearing stirrups. It’s still hyperbole, but omitting that just makes it ridiculous; there must be another official *somewhere* who wears stirrups.
I am a New York football official who plans on wearing them…you can order them from Honigs Canada.

The font is beautiful, but they made the name much, much too big. The Phillies, unlike Toronto, have regular-sized NOBs that don’t overwhelm the jersey like they do in Toronto.
