I’ve picked up several cool old catalogs in recent weeks, all worthy of a closer look. Here’s a rundown:
• Universal Bleacher Company, circa early 1960s: This is the first time I’ve come across a catalog for gymnasium bleachers — an appealingly specific niche. No date on this one, but the colors and awesome logo design have an early-’60s feel. I’m especially fond of the Poweroller and the extended “P” on this little mail-in card insert. Cool side-view diagram, too. Universal Bleacher also sold motorized basketball backstops, which were operated by a key — nice. (The full set of scans from this catalog is available here.)
• Snyders, 1961: Don’t judge this book by its relatively plain cover — lots of good stuff in here, including lots of excellent examples of three-color print design (additional examples here, here, and here). And hey, did you know that the “Pony” in “Pony League” stands for “Protect Our Nation’s Youth”? I didn’t, until I saw that page. Meanwhile, why did so many catalogs from this era offer long pants for softball players? If you’re wondering where the pajama insurrection started, look no further. Much better: several pages’ worth of jackets. And of course no survey of uniform catalogs would be complete without at least one scan of a hosiery page. (Full set of scans here.)
• Swingster, 1977: Best for last. The cover promises utter hilarity, which the interior content totally delivers. If you can look past all the puzzling fashion choices, unfortunate hairstyles, odd props (a picnic basket??), there’s actually some decent sportswear lurking within these pages, including some cool racing jackets and some interesting striped raglan sleeves. Love the page of color offerings, too. And look, the back cover looks like a Robert Marshall box-cover photo! (Full set of scans here.)
Good stuff, right? Expect a full analysis from Terry Proctor in the next day or two.

Douglas). ”¦ Jim Lonetti just won himself a very, very cool T-shirt. ”¦ Villanova and Ciny went color on color last night. ”¦ I interviewed a New Era exec earlier this week for an ESPN column that will be running tomorrow. One thing he told me was that he and the other New Era folks are just as attuned to things like gray underbrims and missing cap patches as we are. In particular, he mentioned that Joba Chamberlain was wearing a standard black-underbrimmed cap during the regular season but appeared to switch to a gray underbrim during the postseason, which led the New Era folks to speculate that he might be superstitious about having a separate cap to use when he’s working out of the bullpen instead of as a starter. ”¦ Also: The New Era people never say, “squatchee”; they just say, “button.”
I may have to start bidding on some of these curling sweaters since the sweater worn by Team USA at the closing ceremonies (made by Polo RL) is $385. Thats crazy!

Those mesh coaching jerseys would be perfect for the hotter days of croquet. Unfortunately, they only come in 8 of the 12 colors.
However, it’s interesting to see the color chart representing all 12 plus 2 more. And the array looks like balls.

This is actually still the way the vast majortiy of backboards work in schools. We built our new building last year, and we have almost this exact system.
Paul, I’ve designed a number of gyms, its amazing to see bleacher design hasn’t changed much at all in the past nearly 50 years. That little motor on wheels contraption (used to pull the bleachers in/out) is pretty funny, they’re all electic today. Keyed switches on the basketball hoops is still in use today.

He is Korean, and his Major League career may already be over. He is required to serve two years of military service, starting prior to his turning 30. He turns 28 in July.

I coached in gyms with rollback bleachers for more years than I’d like to remember. We had a machine for opening and closing the bleachers, it was called the ‘freshman team’.

I graduated from high school in ’06, which would put me in elementary school in the mid to late ’90s. I definitely remember the gym teacher having to use a key to lift and drop the basketball goals.
Uni Watch got a mention on the radio today. Yesterday’s post about the new NFL trophies and logos was the basis for about 15 minutes of discussion during the sports segment this morning on 102.9 in Milwaukee.

Depends on the era. In their time, coaches shorts were no more unusual on, say, a college campus than cargo shorts are today. Especially if your particular crowd was big into intramural athletics and such.

Simple – lots of pocket room. Those shorts were longer than the ones I used to wear. I needed shorts where my keys and wallet wouldn’t fall out easily.
You look at the images in the Swingster ’77 catalogue and think, “This is funny. This is satire. Those guys had a sense of humor.” Right?
But, the sad fact is that it’s not satire. I know. I was a senior in high school at the time. Everything you see there was considered cool and hip. Cutting edge. Yeah, even the hair. (Though I honestly can’t remember the picnic basket as being an essential accoutrement.)
These images tell me a lot about myself and the adult I’ve become. :)

Well, I’m usually a few years behind the times, so I was wearing early 80s stuff in the late 80s/early 90s.
Then again, working with the football and basketball teams, and playing intramurals, I didn’t exactly stand out like a sore thumb.

2) Dunk said sweater in water
3) Insert dripping wool ball into clothes dryer
4) Turn dryer on high heat
5) Remove item from dryer
6) On size tag, following the L for large, using a fine tipped marker write “ukas”
7) Wear sweater to next UniWatch event.

no way man! i live my life for the days i get to wear flip-flops and (quiksilver) boardshorts! i usually (patiently) wait till the temp hits the high-40s/low-50s before i start running out of the house to the store or to visit mom looking like i’m going to the beach (with a hooded sweatshirt, of course). it’s all part of what makes me a genuine fool ;-)

Last time I tried that, took a sweater a bit too long (and I’m about 6’2″) and turned it into something that would fit the world’s longest-armed kindergartner. Or a chimp, I suppose.
Other times, it’s worked fine. Just a real calculated risk. Pure wool will shrink beyond all apparent reason. Cotton, not so much.

I can tell you that high school kids LOVE to try to do both…I have kids that can throw a decent knuckler in warmups and cant get it within 3 feet of the firstbasemen when making a throw to first. The submarine thing usually ends up in a kid two rows down the throwing line getting drilled.

Last time I tried that, took a sweater a bit too long (and I’m about 6’2″) and turned it into something that would fit the world’s longest-armed kindergartner. Or a chimp, I suppose.
Other times, it’s worked fine. Just a real calculated risk. Pure wool will shrink beyond all apparent reason. Cotton, not so much.

Personally, I have poached .jpgs from “Chris Creamer’s Sports Logos” link and tweaked from there (with my amateurish MS Paint skills). I convert them to 24 color bitmaps first, keeps the colors from altering. And I have used “Football Uniforms Past and Present” link for historical perspective and color matching. But, that’s just me

Frustrating thing about the knuckler: Most high school coaches fear it. My youngest son is not big, but in Babe Ruth he threw plenty fast, but also had just a nasty knuckler. Absolutely befuddled kid hitters. From the coaching box, I’d hear ’em in the dugout: “Why can’t we hit this guy? He throws really slow!” I believed then (and still believe) that he could have got three outs anytime the high school team needed it. Especially if he followed a kid who threw heat.
But they wouldn’t even look at him. Great ballplayer. Fast as hell, amazing outfielder, huge arm (kind of a sleeper that way), but they had no time for him. “5’7′, maybe 120 pounds soaking wet? Knuckleball? No, no way, can’t possibly work. Next.”

We have a kid who really has one purpose for us: Throw junk (all slow, including a knuckler.)He is only in for middle relief because we have a couple of hard throwing starters. Its all so ugly that opposing teams get so ticked after an inning or two.
One other aspect of the “Shrinking the Sweater” Concept.
Don’t try it on anything with a zipper.
On account of the zipper doesn’t, y’know, shrink. It being metal and all.
Now, if you like a lumpy, bumpy chest and stomach, then you’re in.
Otherwise…not gonna work.

I’d like to see more coaches like you.
What are the odds of a kid growing up blessed with an arm that can throw major league heat? Not as high as the odds that an average kid can learn the knuckler.
It’s perfect for the kids. There’s no strain on the arm (unlike trying to throw a curve) and hey, it’s great practice for the catchers, too.
It’s good for the flamethrowers as well. Last year on my son’s team there was a kid who could really fire the ball in there, but every now and then he’d throw a knuckleball and just make the batter look silly.

We like our uniforms. A lot. Most do not like Vick, and the Panthers don’t typically make such signings.
That said, he’s served his time and we need a QB… But I think you’ll find a lot of Carolina fans on the Matt Moore bandwagon. Vick would play into our run game rather well though, so that’s another thought.

You can go wrong with newer shelltoes. I hate the puffy tongues. I was lucky to pick up a pair of the original foam tongues that came out a few years ago.

Was because teams back then didn’t want the expensive of, or the bother with, stirrup socks for recreational softball. Also some saw going with stirrups as being just…too much. Too “We think we’re in the bigs.” The longer pants seemed to show a “proper perspective,” I guess.
And dark colors were popular because, frankly, the dirt didn’t show. And guys had to launder them themselves.

i had those too — i know steffi graf wore the same pair (she always wore men’s sneakers, for some reason)…they came with three different color pegs you literally screwed into the heel (mine were red, white and blue); they were of varying degrees of stiffness, and you were supposed to add them based either on weight (heavier were supposed to use blue, lighter were either white or red, i forget)…or comfort
me and another guy on the team had them, and we both just kept red (closer to toe) white and blue in that order, cuz, ya know…it looked cool
the three stripes were silver on the pair i owned
and they were, 25 years ago, and still…the most expensive pair of sneakers i ever owned — i think they were like $125 back then…ridiculously expensive, and i wore them down on the hardcourts of my high school, like an ass

Lendl was in a bit of a sponsor transition. He wore L’Apina Australian tenniswear and Superga shoes, with Kneissel racquets. Then he morphed over to Adidas for all three..although unknown to most people, the Adidas frame was still the Kneissel with a paint job.

The reasons the CBJ wear the green jerseys before St. Patrick’s day is that the jerseys will be auctoned off by the Blue Jackets Foundation. The BON are “Irish-ized.” They did the same thing last year, as well as gave out awesome green hats to everyone in attendance.
