Design-An-NFL-Uni – Part II

NFL Uni Design Contest Header 2

By Phil Hecken

It’s time for the second, and final, round of tweaks/concepts/revisions for the latest “Design a Uniform” contest, which was begun a little over a month ago. This contest was held in conjunction with Alain Nana-Sinkam, Prexy of Classic Old School Gear, (here’s a link back to that Design An NFL Jersey article) , with the winner receiving a custom-made jersey from Classic Old School Gear. More entries than ever poured in, 69 of them in total.

Last weekend, we looked at the first of those entries and today we’re going to look at the rest. The rules were somewhat simple: design a jersey for one team, and describe, in 50 words or less, that jersey.

As explained last week, the contest will work this way: All the jerseys will be presented to the readers, at which time comments on those submissions will be requested. Alain, myself, and a crack staff of UW judges will then narrow the field down to the top 11 (since a football squad is eleven men) jerseys. Once we have those 11, we’ll put them to a vote by the UW readership. The winner, as determined by you, the readers, will receive a custom made jersey. OK? OK!

And now, the final batch of your “Design-An-NFL-Uniform” contest submissions:

~~~
Patrick Lange: Minnesota Vikings
Out with the purple and gold and in with the black and yellow. I know it will be strange to see the Vikings in anything other than purple but what has the purple done for the Vikings. They have never held the Lombardi in purple, so to hell with it.
~~~

Braden Leibovitch: Miami Dolphins

I tried to experiment in trying to make a jersey sleeve design that capitalizes on sleeve stripes being cut off from a tighter jersey cut. The end result has underarm “fins” that break up the striping while adding to the Dolphins theme.

~~~
Damon Liddiard: Cincinnati Bengals
First, tigers are orange, not black, also no other teams are using an orange primary right now. Tiger print is always tacky, so we put some stylized stripes on the side. I think the sleeves would hold up okay to the de-sleeving trend.
~~~

Neil Lommel: Buffalo Bills

This predominantly modern set is inspired by the uniforms worn by the Bills in the early 1960’s including the year of their first AFL Championship in 1964. I brought back the unique, rich royal blue color for these. The shoulder stripes represent the red swoosh from the Bills primary logo.

~~~
Chris Markham: Indianapolis Colts (also home action and road)
Since the title is uniform tweaks, not complete uniform overhauls, I’ve decided to just tweak one of the league’s best unis, the Colts, and make it perfect. It has always bugged me that the Colts have two stripes on their jersey, two on their pants, but only one on the helmet. So my simple tweak was to add a second stripe to the helmet, and two stripes to the socks. I believe this simple, yet important tweak, makes the Colts’ uniforms the downright best in the league.
~~~

Kyle Martirez-McIntosh: Denver Broncos (also home, road, & alt)

I’m a longtime Broncos fan and while I appreciate that we won both our titles in the current uni, Denver needs a new look. The current set is starting to look a bit dated, a more traditional and timeless set would hold up better I think. I wanted to try to incorporate the modern logo and the navy centered color scheme of the current uniforms, but add more orange and hearken back to the 80’s and early 90’s gear. I love the look of UCLA and Syracuse with the shoulder loops (Syracuse’s color scheme works perfect for Denver) but the looped look in the pros is Indy’s thing so I didn’t want to touch it. I decided to go with a Northwestern stripe on the sleeves to echo the shoulder loops, on the helmet I got rid of the pointy stripe in favor of a single stripe, and the pants have a triple stripe running down the sides. I kept most existing uniform colors (including two variations of white pants) but I ditched the navy pants to prevent the team from even thinking about going dark on dark.

~~~
Virgilio Mathus: Chicago Bears (also alt)
I decided to go old-school, so I went with a bi-color navy-orange approach. The sleeve and collar piping consist of a thick stripe in the middle flanked by to thinner stripes. Block numbers and letters. The “C” and “Bears” logos are placed at the collar tip and chest. I changed the pants to a “sandish” color and the facemask to grey to complete the old-school transformation. I’m also adding the away and alt home unis.
~~~

Anthony McGuire: New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints uniform tweak. There are 3 jerseys; white, black and gold; with 3 pants; white, black and gold. I converted their jersey set to a traditional look with the strips but updated the jersey numbers and the player name with the same font that is used in their team name scrip. My idea was to change their primary helmet to black but have an alternate gold helmet that they already use. I think this is a good modern version with a classic touch. I hope this wins it all.

~~~
Brad McPelican: Seattle Seahawks
I tried to combine their old and current uniforms but also add some new elements. I used their current logo with their old colours but added a green stripe in the middle so that it wraps around to forms three stripes on the sleeves. I also used the old script.
~~~

Chance Michaels: Green Bay Packers (also fonts)

Green Bay’s design is beautiful, but the jerseys, with their bold sleeve striping, are relics of a day when jerseys had sleeves (which is why the Packers truncated them in 1997). My solution – drop the striping altogether. The distinctive element is now a stencil font befitting the team’s name.

~~~
Randolph Miller: “Los Angeles” Jaguars
This is my concept should the Jaguars move to Los Angeles:
First, I switched the base color of teal to a dark red that is similar to USC’s. Then I made the “swiping jaguar” logo the primary because it lends itself to the curvature of the new helmet, as well as my jersey design’s sleeve sides. Thin color piping lies along the front seems and we drop the unitard look, for a clean, classic white pant for both home and away. Simple, clean, good looking and better than what the current “Jacksonville” team wears. ENOUGH BLACK HELMETS!!!!
~~~

David Montgomery: Indianapolis Colts

Jersey: Solves the Colts current shoulder stripe length issue (too short). In fact, it lengthens them down the sides. Also,

Pants: switched to blue, to give the stripes continuity.

Number: Font changed. Color changed to grey with white outlining. This ties in the current grey facemask.

~~~
Ryan Muraro: Miami Dolphins
I decided to clean-up the Miami Dolphins uniforms a bit, and change the teal to a more gray-blue hue. I also wanted to change the helmet so it matched the helmet worn by the Dolphin in the team’s primary logo.
~~~

Scott Nebel: Minnesota Vikings

I am a huge fan of their 70s era uniforms, specifically the horizontal home sleeve stripes and the contrasting vertical away shoulder stripes. However, those old uniforms suffered from a extremely dark purple helmet with a lighter jersey, which still occurs on the Vikings current throwbacks. I’ve taken the new, updated helmet, the lighter/brighter purple color, and combined them with the 70s era uniforms. I also added the Vikings wordmark under the NFL logo and the Vikings norseman above the nameplate. I also kept the current uniform colored collars (which looks great on the aways… Not so sure on the homes), but to be honest, I could go either way with those. I was hoping the Vikings would switch to something like these when they changed uniforms in the 2006 season (instead of the Falcons/Cardinals route), but I guess we can always dream.

~~~
T.J. Nicolaides: Philadelphia Eagles
Tweaked the ’90’s midnight green into an accent color that wouldn’t clash with the ’80s kelly green. Kept the white but also brought back a healthy dose of silver. Altered sleeves that taper to form the side piping are meant to suggest flight. Kept the modern font – it’s unique.
~~~

Joseph Obermaier: Detroit Lions

Based on the discussion of the mythical golden helmets of the Lions ”“ here’s what a ”˜throwback’ jersey might look like.

~~~
Masao Okazaki: Buffalo Bills
I’m resubmitting my Bills home uniform design for the contest.
~~~

Brett Paci: Dallas Cowboys

I decided to tweak the Cowboys because they are the one team (outside of the Bengals maybe) that embraces some razzle dazzle. Its an ecclectic, but more consistent mix of old and new.

P.S. – Just to be clear, the black lines are just for the drawing. They would not actually appear on uni. Also, for some reason Illustrator saves jpegs with less saturated color, so the blue may look a little lighter than I intended.

~~~
Dan Patterson: Denver Broncos
My redesign is for the Denver Broncos. I based my jersey on their 1966 uniform. I used the blue sleeves, but I changed the shoulder stripe. I kept the current logo and number style. For colors, I chose the royal blue and bright orange from the “orange crush” jerseys.
~~~

Jeff Provo: Carolina Panthers

Trying to make the Panthers look more unique and less like the Lions and/or Raiders without actually changing their colors.

I know I’m not gonna win, but what the heck.

~~~
Wes Rickards: Buffalo Bills
(for away jersey) The main draw to Buffalo is Niagara. This jersey represents that: The blue shoulders signify the river, the white chest / abs signify Horseshoe falls, and the white stripes signify the falling water.
Maybe I’m trying too hard.
~~~

Jason Rypkema: Arizona Cardinals

“Less is more” when it comes to uniforms.

Removed ridiculous piping.
Current symbol.
Current Red.
Current font (w/black outline).
Old White Jersey (with beautiful sleeves).
Added yellow.
Kept “Cardinals” script on the front.
Kept Cardinal symbol on the home.

~~~
George Scordo: Denver Broncos
I am going for something within reason, here so I’m not recreating the wheel.
Got rid of the newer bells & whistles (odd/angular helmet stripes/ jersey and pant swooshes) and put a few of the old bells and whistles back where they were (jersey and pants stripes) and make the helmet a look little simpler with a one-color blocked helmet stripe. I also went with grey pants for the roadies. Going Blue would look too Chicago Bears and going orange (Denver’s done it in the past) just looks silly and sticking with the white is boring and makes the Broncos look like they’re playing in long underwear.
~~~

Jeff Shirley: Dallas Cowboys

Here’s my submission for your uniform contest. I felt the Cowboys needed a few adjustments, although I kept a lot of their inconsistencies that they’ve had in their uniforms for years.

Hope you enjoy.

~~~
Sonny Smith: Cincinnati Bengals
It’s nothing much, in fact it’s a hand drawn piece of crap, but here is my Bengals Concept. It’s only the away jersey, The home has been lost somewhere but basically it’s the same thing only the jersey is orange.
~~~

William Smith: Buffalo Bills

My design concepts for my beloved Buffalo Bills. A tweaked version of the old logo. A touch of gold gives a brief nod to the Sabres, and adds a unique element with the 3 color combo. Also, a return to home whites (used briefly in the 70’s and 80’s).

~~~
David Sonny: Cincinnati Bengals
This is just a mix of the 80’s and late 90’s uniforms with a little modern twist. The pants have a tapered stripe, shoulders stripes are simplified and so on. The white uniforms would just be an inverted version as would an alternate orange.
~~~

Mike Sullivan: St. Louis Rams

After a 1-15 season, the Rams could use some excitement and new unis. I brought back the old blue and yellow jersey idea of having the ram horns on the sleeves, except moved them into the front and back views. I also did away with the logo on the sleeves and made the uniform two-tone for a modern look.

~~~
Christopher Tatak: Cleveland Browns
I tweaked the Cleveland Browns’ jerseys by mixing classic with future. Changed the number and lettering font and added orange outlines. Orange stripe on the front of both jerseys added. Collar made orange and NFL shield moved to new colored area above the collar. Stripes on the sleeves were enlarged.
~~~

Ben Traxel: Denver Broncos

Still can’t find the time to do any new NFL stuff but wanted in the contest anyway. So, here is one from yesteryear that was posted months ago. One stipulation. If I win (doubtful) please let me pick a new number and NOB other than “PLAYER”. I’d much prefer it say “ALZADO” or “MORTON” or even “YOUR NAME HERE”.

~~~
Adam Walter: San Diego Chargers
Simple concept here…I took a jersey (Powder Blue Chargers) that is generally loved and made a simple tweak. I combined this classic jersey with an even more classic look. Finally, the chargers shield was added both as the neck bumber and sock logo.
~~~

Geoffrey Waterman: Seattle Seahawks

I borrowed the color brown from the true seahawk (an osprey) and the stripe pattern on the arm from the old green/blue uniform, removing the Seahawk logo. It’s an attempt to give a little flavor to the blue (Hawks, Rams) & red (49ers, Cards) NFC West.

~~~
Adam Wood: New York Giants
I chose to redesign the Giants. I was trying to decide on something to spice up the home jersey. While looking I came across one my favorite unis. The 1933 Giants uniform. Pretty self explanatory. This is an updated version of that classic.
~~~

There’s a look at the second set of contestants. Last weekend, you guys were great in guiding the “crack” staff of UW experts, plus myself and Alain, in nominating your choices for our “final 11” (because, 11 men make up a football side, don’t ya know). So, today, we’re going to ask that you again to the same.

In the comments below, let’s hear what you think of the second batch of jerseys. Remember — we’ll be putting the finalists to a vote of the full Uni Watch readership — so your thoughts will definitely help select those finalists. While the entire uniform and helmet can be used to “see the full concept,” it’s the actual jersey design on which the contest is based, so please take that into account.

These designers, like the first set last weekend, all did an outstanding job and deserve your praise as well as your critiques. So, let’s hear what you think. We’ll be back next weekend when we’ve narrowed the field down to the final 11 — and we’ll let the voting begin.

benchies header

One can only assume Mike is referring to the Gopher Head Coach, right? Here’s Ricko with the setup:

Learn something every day, right? Some of it useful, some of it not so useful, but hopefully at least it’s interesting. Better yet if it’s something you can have fun with. Even if you’re the only one who laughs.

And with that, enjoy your Saturday Benchies.

curling final header

It’s GOTTA be the pants: For those keeping score at home, or are just plain fans of the Olympic Curling Bonspiel, you know that today’s Men’s Gold Medal game features heavyweight home-nation favorites Canada, headed by awesome skip Kevin Martin, versus UW sentimental favorites and underdog Norway. Maybe you didn’t know the finalists. But unless you’ve been living in a cave, you know about the sartorial splendor that is Team Norway.

Yep. Seeking to give themselves a big lift (and perhaps a bit of attention to Uni Watch’s new most favorite sport), the Norwegians are perhaps now better known for their pants than their skills. The King of Norway got himself a pair. Even the New York Times has shown the viking warriors some love. It’s quite a phenomenon — I don’t “do” Facebook, but apparently there are some 488,000+ “fans” of the pants on there.

You know the pants — they’ve been featured on Uni Watch before — and they’re made by Loudmouth Golf. One can be fairly certain Jim Vilk would wear those. In fact, if they didn’t retail for ninty bucks a pop, I’d get a pair. Our prexy, Paul Lukas, has even offered a free membership (see second graf) to anyone who provides proof of buying (and wearing) a pair.

This year’s Bonspeil has been disappointing for many teams, but especially the American Men and Women, but overall it has had quite an amazing surge in the popularity of curling throughout the States, which can only be a good thing. For anyone in the snowed-in New York Metropolitan area who’s interested, there is an Open House at the Plainfield Curling Club tomorrow (February 28th), where earlier this week, Paul and I received a private lesson from Dean Gemmell.

But today, at 6:00 ET on CNBC, the Men’s Gold Medal game between Canada and Norway takes place, and it should be a great final. If you’ve been watching the curling all along, I know you’ll be watching — but if you haven’t — do yourselves a favor and tune in this evening. Even if curling isn’t your “thing,” at least you can root on the Norwegians in their most excellent pantaloons.

On another note, if you missed it last night, the Canadian ladies, led by Uni Watch favorite, Cheryl Bernard (and apparently not just Uni Watch) fell to defending Gold Medalists Sweden, in a thrilling match, decided on an 11th end steal by the Swedes.

uni tweaks header

Back again with more Uniform Tweaks, Concepts and Revisions today. Taking a look at all sports from here on out, so, if you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way. Today, because of the NFL jersey contest, we’ll be featuring MLB tweaks.

~~~
Starting off today is Daniel Chanelli, who has some concepts for 10 major league baseball teams:
Hi,
This is the first set of MLB tweaks I’ve sent into Uniwatch. I like to consider myself a baseball purist, so I don’t have any groundbreaking changes. Rather, I would like to consider these as idealized uniforms-combining classic elements with any redeeming current elements in order to create a really classic look.
Enjoy,
Dan
Yankees:
First, I gave the top hat logo the retrofitting it deserves. For the home set, I changed the pattern of the pinstripes (around the shoulders and sleeves), number font, and cap logo to match the glory days of the 1950’s. For the away jersey, I got rid of the 70’s white highlights. I know a Yankees alternate would be shunned (I don’t really want one either), but if they did wear one occasionally, I think a design based on the 1930’s set would look great.
Red Sox:
For the Sox, I added trim on the sleeves of the home jersey to match the uniform of the 60’s, stirrups included of course. I also changed the cap logo to match the one used in 1941. For the away uniform, I think the Red Sox took a great step forward by reintroducing the blue ”˜ Boston ’ font, but there’s something about the plain, block-lettering that I just love. I also kept the sock sleeve patch because I think it looks sharp.
Orioles:
One of my favorite sets; I kept the Maryland patch on both the home and away jerseys, but removed the orioles script on the sleeve of the current away jersey because I thought it made it too busy. The home jersey is in the style of the Ripken era uniform (I like the black primary better.) The current away jersey is great for bringing the ”˜ Baltimore ’ script back, but I added the original 60’s script instead. To top both sets off are the classic Orioles stirrups and the late 60’s cap, which seriously needs to make a comeback.
Indians:
In my opinion, the mid-90’s Indians uniform was perfect (I still can’t warm up to all the navy piping on the current set.) For the away uniform, I took the 2007 away jersey and removed the ”˜ Cleveland ’ script, opting instead for block lettering-mimicking the 1970 away jersey. I also brought back the ”˜C’ cap logo. The Indians currently use a navy, sleeveless alternate jersey; I changed it to a more appropriate red, and added the matching ”˜C’ cap and stirrups ”“ they just scream mid 60’s.
White Sox:
I love black and silver, but the allure of the Go-Go-Sox is too powerful. I brought back the red, the numbers on the sleeves, and classic stirrups. The away jersey is also retro, but I did wrestle with the idea of using something closer to the current away set.
Twins:
I was thrilled that the Twins were bringing back their original home uniforms as an alternate; I would make it the primary home set though. I know a lot of people are really happy about the new away jerseys, but I can’t get the similarity to the Nationals out of my mind. I liked the new ”˜Minnesota’ script, so I changed the colors to match the ”˜Twins’ script better and placed it on a plain grey jersey to mimic the original 60’s away jersey.
Braves:
In my ideal world the Braves would have stayed in Milwaukee , so I’ve brought back their original uniforms. I like both versions of the Chief Noc-A-Homa patch, so I put the pre 1957 version on the sleeve of the home jersey, and the post 1957 version on the away jersey. I also added my all-time favorite stirrups. I really think Atlanta should bring these uniforms back (at least the far-superior black tomahawk.)
Cubs:
For the Cubs, I really tried to replicate the Ernie Banks era uniform. I kept the current logo but replaced the walking cub sleeve patch with the patch from the 60’s. For the away jersey I got rid of all the white outlines and the cub patch on the pants, to give what I think is a much more classic look for the Cubs.
Reds:
The Reds had caught a lot of flak for using too much black in their uniforms, particularly their sleeveless set. I think the Reds were one of the few teams that can pull off the sleeveless look, so I brought them back and the red. The away uniform uses the original ”˜ Cincinnati ’ script. As alternates, I tried to replicate the Big Red Machine minus the pullovers. I also changed Cincinnati ’s primary logo back to the Machine era.
Pirates:
For the Pirates, I made their primary logo a colorized version of the early 70’s logo. The pirates are the other team that can pull off a sleeveless set, and I don’t know why they got rid of them. I changed the ”˜Pirates’ script back to the thinner 1960’s style and brought back the original stirrups. I contemplated changing the number font, but they are unique as they are. For alternates, I created non-pullover versions of the ’71 championship uniforms.
~~~

Next up is just Tony, who is tweaking his Brew Crew:

Well, these are probably a little late, but I recently came across your “New Crew” feature and had to weigh in on my favorite team

For the home uni I went back to the Brewers’ rightful look””basically the “Retro Fridays” jersey with some minor differences. I do like shirt script on the Crew’s current unis, if nothing else, so I integrated it into the old look. I also added the sleeve and collar piping to make the shirt stand out a little more. For the away uni I just took a standard away gray with the same blue piping and the “Milwaukee” script that should adorn the Brewers away shirts. The yellow-fronted cap may come off as a little too “retro” but I think it does a good job of helping the away uni look a little more distinct from the home one.

Thanks, and keep it up!

~~~
Closing it out today is Mendy Friedman, who has a special set of uni tweaks for your World Champion New York Yankees:
Hey Every one!
With my new tweak I’ll try to help spice up my beloved Yankees Uniform. So I was up watching a Yankee Classic game and realized something, the Yankees Uniform hasn’t changed since god knows when, so I decided to try to change it up a little. I left the home Uniform Mostly the same beside for the black belt and socks with the Navy Shoes. The away uniform i decided to change because the gray seems so dull. I gave a black jersey with a white collar and buttons with white pants, a black belt with black socks and navy shoes. I love the yankees classic uniforms but its time for a change and hey if the Hated Red Sox have an alternate shouldn’t the greatest team in sports history have one?
Looking forward to a 28th next season.
Mendy
Alrighty then. That’s all for today. Check back tomorrow when we return with all new tweaks, revisions and concepts.
vilk 5 & 1 b
Everyone’s favorite fashion uniform critic, Jim “Do I wear a kilt? You’ll never know” Vilk, has returned again to bring us THE fashion event of the Winter Olympics: Ice Dancing. Yep, the ones we’ve all been waiting for. Not one, not two…but THREE separate ‘disciplines’ make up Ice Dance. So, here’s the Vilkman with a triple-shot of his “5 & 1.”
~~~

COMPULSORY DANCE:

5. Cathy Reed/Chris Reed, Japan: Yo, baseball fans — who says stripes only look good on the home white unis?

4. Emily Samuelson/Evan Bates, USA: Ditto. Nice sparkly dress, too.

Bronze: Jana Khokhlova/Sergei Novitski, Russia: I can appreciate the all-black look when it’s done this well.

Silver: Nathalie Pechalat/Fabian Bourzat, France: Got a funky 70s vibe from this look…and yes, I’d wear that necktie.

Gold: Ekaterina Bobrova/Dmitri Soloviev, Russia: Fantastic. The Vilks should go out on the town dressed like that (minus the skates, of course).

“Don’t come near my podium with that”: Xintong Huang/Xun Zheng, China: Never been a fan of the “Let’s pretend we’re only covering the naughties and very little else” dresses…then there’s that way-too neon ruffled shirt.

ORIGINAL DANCE:

5. Meryl Davis/Charlie White, USA: With folk/country costumes the theme of the night, these two went Indian Indian instead of American Indian.

4. Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir, Canada: Here’s a case of an outfit adding to a performance.

Bronze: Nora Hoffmann/Maxim Zavozin, Hungary: Mrs. V is Hungarian, but I would have picked this couple even if she wasn’t.

Silver: Isabelle Delobel/Olivier Schoenfelder, France: Can you dig it? Yes I can-can!

Gold: Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte, Italy: – If I had a bottle of red wine, I would have popped the cork…I mean unscrewed the cap…and toasted this festive look.

“Don’t come near my podium with that”: Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin, Russia: I think only Johnny Weir would say “I’d wear that.” I sure wouldn’t.

FREE DANCE:

5. Irina Shtork/Taavi Rand, Estonia: Last-place couple gets more than the Olympic experience — they get a Top 5 ranking from me. I know, that and 7 Estonian kroons will get them a cup of coffee…

4. Meryl Davis/Charlie White, USA: A little too much ruffle left the silver medalists off my podium.

Bronze: Frederica Faiella/Massimo Scali, Italy: They almost made the original dance list as well — no almost this time.

Silver: Kamila Hajkova/David Vincour, Czech Republic: Much MUCH better than those opening ceremonies outfits.

Gold: Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir, Canada: Olympic gold, AND Uni Watch gold…what more could you want?

“Don’t come near my podium with that”: Jana Khokhlova/Sergei Novitski, Russia: Might work in Vegas, but this is the Olympics.

The ladies’ list wraps it up tomorrow.

~~~
Thanks, Jim. I think I speak for the entire UW readership when I say…I can’t wait.
~~~~~~~~~~

Yowsa. That’s some post. But hey, we had lots of things to cover, so it’s all good. Everyone be sure to give your uniform design contestants your thoughts, good or bad, so that we can narrow the field down to 11 for next weekend.

Everyone have a fantastic Saturday.

    Nice job on the tweaks, really like the font treatments on the Saints and Packers. Also, very nice job on the Red Sox uni.

    I’m kinda wishing I’d have submitted something different. I’m working on concepts for all 32 teams and I think I’ve come up with better…

    …anyway, I like the Panthers concept because it’s mine. Other than that, I kinda like the Eagles with the 2 shades of green, and the triple-striped Seahawks is pretty good.

    I’m also strangely attracted to the black & yellow Vikings – it’s a nice looking jersey. Of course, it’d work much better as a Steelers alternate than it does as a Vikings concept.

    Wes Rickards’ Buffalo Bills is my favorite of this group. I also like the LA Jags… WOW! talk about a tweak….he tweaked out the entire state of Florida.

    Don’t know if my earlier comment was eaten by my phone or by the comment monster….

    Great entries this week!

    If anybody’s interested, I have a slightly longer explanation (and a lousy Photoshop of my entry) on my blog:

    link
Loved the last entry for the New York Giants. Brilliant!!!
Another vote for this one. Very cool.

    This week’s standouts are as follows:

    1. Chance Michael’s Packers- LOVE the numbers
    2. Neil Lommel’s Bills- Very clean and classy
    3. Brad McPelican’s Seahawks (had to swallow hard to list this since I had the Seahawks submission last week)
    4. T.J. Nicolaides’ Eagles- Good simple design- though it probably can use the eagle head logo somewhere.
    5.Damon Liddiard’s Bengals shows that you don’t have to plaster yourself with stripes to communicate tiger.

    Uni Tweaks –

    I really like Adam Woods’ Giants concept. At first I thought it was too much like an old hockey jersey but once I saw the ’33 jersey I understood and really like. Very unique.

    I also really liked the simplicity of Sonny Smith’s Bengals concept (and it is not a “piece of crap”…you too the time and effort to do it. Don’t downplay your ideas.). I might be in the minority but I think the current Bengals striped helmet is great as is, very unique and very representative of who they are (could go for the reverse orange stripes on black base that some have suggested however). But Sonny’s concept does a great job of simplifying what is currently a train wreck of a uni set (as well documented on UW) yet continues the stripe motif from the helmet.

    While I am not in love with some of the others I still very much appreciate the effort and creativity it takes to put your ideas out there for scrutiny. While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions I am somewhat amazed (and disappointed) when others ruthlessly rip into some of the ideas people submit. Have they tried it themselves? But I guess that is the chance you take by opening up to public scrutiny.

    Good job all.

    A couple more comments on tweaks…

    – REALLY like the Packers font (and I HATE the Packers…well more so the Cheesehead fans)

    – Like the LA Jags logo but sorry not so much on the pink. Really don’t see that selling well to at least half the population.

    Also is it assumed that when a team moves it will always keep the nickname? Jags is generic enough I suppose they could keep it anywhere they might go. It would be much better if team’s didn’t try to “protect” their legacy by keeping names that just don’t work in new locales – Utah Jazz being the most ridiculous example. I guess I didn’t realize that the New Orleans jazz had a rich enough history that it was worth preserving.

    Mark,

    The only thing I don’t like about those Bengals helmets is that they’re worn with terrible jerseys (and pants).

    We may be in the minority of those who like them, but we’re definitely not alone.

    In fact, I’d be willing to bet that there are more of us here who at least “kinda like them” than there are who hate them.

    Someone really needs to do a Browns uni tweak that at least incorporates the orange pants with the brown jersey.

    And way too much red on those Indians tweaks. I’m much more fond of the navy they currently use. Too much red is gaudy…

    I personally hate the Philadelphia Eagles. Can’t stand them. When they switched to the God Awful color combo in the 90’s I loved it because I thought that crappy uniform fitted the team I despised so much. But what T.J. Nicolaides did with his uniform tweek is astounding. First of all, it’s far and away the best of the bunch! Secondly, it made an Eagles hater like myself take notice, and, who knows, want to own something like that (which is the NFL’s goal anyway right?). Way to go T.J. Excellent uni-tweek! I still hate the Eagles, but I love what you did.

    I love what Chance Michaels has done with the Packer uniform. While keeping the traditional colors he has cleaned up the uniform, by elminating the busy flourishes of yellow and white… while adding some very cool and historically significant fonts.
    This one gets my vote.

    Love the Orioles unit tweak. Best use of old uni concepts with a new patch. Although I know it is a controversial subject in Birdland I wish they would go back to the Cartoon Bird.

    This card was posted on the Fleer Sticker Project recently and shows the Patriots wearing navy jerseys with navy pants. I don’t recall them ever having done that. Did they used to? Maybe in the first year or two with the newest uniform set?

    link

    Patrick- I loved the Black and Gold Vikings look. Not too sure how it would work in the NFL with the steelers and saints going with similar looks, but it is def better than the purple they have now.
    Brendan- Dolphins design was very unique and creative. I would be interested to see how they would look in action, but I think its a great combination of old school and new school.
    Tony- Your Brewers concept was fantastic! I loved how you mixed the classic jerseys with the modern fonts of the Brewers. That’s a change they should make!

    I think they only wore the dark pants with the dark uniforms one time.

    Lots of really outstanding work, but the top prize today goes to Chance Michaels’ Packers beauty. Special recognition to Patrick Lange’s Vikings design–the jersey looks cool (though the color change would never fly)…but mostly, kudos for getting rid of that stupid shadow effect on the logo.

    Daniel Chanelli’s baseball concepts are terrific. Every one of them.

    i believe you’re correct — maybe timmy b can confirm…

    to their credit, the pats have avoided the tendency to “mix and match;” the mono-blue was (thankfully) a one-shot (i believe — maybe it was worn twice…maybe) deal, and they never wore the alt silver with the silver pants, which could truly have been the worst look ever

    I gong about 90 percent of the NFL submissions, but I like the Saints one, can’t stand the current NOB’s and leotard black pants, not that they’re no longer a laughingstock they can get better matching duds…

    Kevin Martin’s great!! They keep replaying the final draw he missed in the 2002 final and his take (classic Canadian accent) that it’s a game of fractions.

    I wound up gravitating towards Susan O’Connor myself, I liked seeing someone my age (Bernard) who doesn’t look bad but it got to be overkill in the end. And I wound up enjoying seeing her Favre her last two draws.

    But the black uni’s of the Canadian women were sweet!!!

    That Packers/Patriots game was from 2002, you could barely see the yard markers because the MLS team played the day before, and they wanted their game to be held w/o football markings overly-visible.

    The Pats lost pretty bad that day if I recall, and that’s when experimental uni-combos usually go by the wayside…

    Sorry to mix metaphors, but Chance Michaels has hit one out of the park with his work on the Packers jersey. A slam dunk. Nice work, sir.

    So as not to slight others …

    1. Packers, Chance Michaels
    2. LA Jaguars, Randy Miller
    3, Eagles, T.J. Nicolaides

    Nice work, gents.

    Joseph Obermaier’s Lion’s re-do is the clear winner. It is truly scrumtrulescent.

    Kudos to Brad McPelican(Seahawks) & Chance Michaels(Packers). Totally love takin’ the old school Hawk stripes and fusing it with the new logo. One of the most original takes I’ve seen. Oh and taking that old school Packers font they used on the back of their helmets for the jersey is brilliant.

    I have to admit, I usually wince, cover my eyes & find something else to do when these uni tweaks are posted, but today’s batch is really good.

    I particularly like:

    Mathus’s Bears
    McGuire’s Saints
    McPelican’s Seahawks
    Michaels’ Packers
    Nicolaides’ Eagles
    Obermaier’s Lions
    Okazaki’s Bills
    Patterson’s Broncos
    Rickards’ Bills
    Scordo’s Broncos
    Smith’s Bengals
    Smith’s Bills
    Wood’s Giants

    Also like the idea of putting the Chargers’ shield logo on the uniform and the Broncos’ old D logo likewise.

    Not crazy about totally redoing a team’s color scheme. Guess that’s one of the Ricko-type parameters I would impose on tweaks.

    By the way, people are worried about the LA Jaguars? LA is all about stealing other cities’ nicknames nonsensically… Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers…

    Not to rain on the parade, but I’m surprised at all the interest in Chance’s Packers and TJ’s Eagles. I don’t see what the stenciled uniform number adds to the jersey (other than the fact that it’s used in the Packer logotype), and all the cool stripes were removed. As for the Eagles, it’s nice except for the pit stain accents.

    I’d vote for these instead:

    Lommel’s Bills – simple but striking
    McPelican’s Seahawks – a terrific update of the 90’s jersey
    Smith’s Bengals – his self described “piece of crap” design is actually quite good, though I’d lose the extra black stroke around the triangles.

    Also, did someone really submit a Colts tweak that didn’t include a change to the jersey???

    Thanks for the love, “piece of crap” was referring to the execution, not the idea. My comp skills are limited at best, so a hand drawn uni is what I came up with.

    That being said, the talent of UWs readers is impressive. Kudos to all!

    if anyone cares…on USA right now is the bronze medal game between sweden and switzerland — curling that is…

    tied 3-3 after 6 ends, so now’s a good time to check it out

I love those Bengal helmets. The original uni that went with it was flawless. I didn’t mind all of the tiger print because it was contained in stripe shapes. Probably would not have looked too good truncated.
These are so bad…Ive really gotta stop coming when these Uni tweaks are all thats posted…
So what if they are bad. Bad is usually interesting. I probably like five percent of the submissions each week, but I like looking anyway.
    I do find the amount of mix-matched stripe patterns a little disturbing. I’m a sucker for consistency.

    Daniel Chanelli is a man after my own heart. I love every one of those baseball tweaks. Perfect!

    And for the NFL contest, I really like the Kyle Martinez-McIntosh Broncos idea. The old school collegiate look would be refreshing.

    Was going to comment on the contest entries first…until I saw something that just couldn’t wait.

    I liked all of today’s baseball tweaks, but Mr. Chanelli, you have read my mind. Just this week I was thinking that I’d love to see a buttoned-jersey version of the ’71 Pirates. You nailed it! That is now my all-time favorite baseball uni.

    Please, someone in Pirate management, look into making this your new uni. Thanks.

    Going to go with this order
    1.Wood’s Giants design simply for how unique it would be in the NFL

    2.David Sonny’s Bengals Design. The team needs a change, that is simply and clean and would look good in the modern cuts.

    3. Miller’s LA Jags. I don’t like the helmet logo, but the uniform itself looks really polished. I love the simple, yet modern design.

    Thanks to everyone single contestant today. Lots of fun stuff.

    Some random thoughts:

    Lange – Love to see those jerseys…on the Steelers. Very nice touch adding the Puma shoes, though.

    Liddiard – Good job. Only thing that worries me is how the side piping would look on the stretchy jerseys.

    Lommel – A little Texans-ish but still good. Nice way of incorporating the Bills swoosh.

    McPelican – Always liked the big hawk on the sleeves.

    Michaels – Love the font! Simple yet distinctive. Steelers link could do that, too…in yellow numbers.

    Miller – Innovative, yet not over the top. I’d wear that.

    Montgomery – That’s one way to un-truncate shoulder stripes…

    Nicolaides – Nice to know someone out there is thinking of using two shades of green. Everyone does it with blue – why not green?

    Obermaier – Nice and simple. I like.

    Okazaki – Very Alouette-ish.

    Paci – So it’s not presented as neatly as the others – it’s still a good job.

    Patterson – Not a fan of the Broncos font, but your uni makes up for it.

    Provo – With bigger logos, I’d wear that.

    Rickards – Home jersey? Yes. Away? You’re right – maybe you thought a little too much.

    Sonny Smith – I’d like to see your orange jersey too. I hope you kept the striped helmet. Very good.

    Wood – I’d wear that! Especially if you moved the TV numbers to the sleeves.

    On the MLB tweaks, it seems like an affinity for the retro/old school look creates a good number of mismatches (ie: the different C’s used by the Indians). That being, Tony’s Brewers concept may be the best set I’ve seen on UniWatch in recent memory, regardless of sport.

    Giancarlo said…

    “By the way, people are worried about the LA Jaguars? LA is all about stealing other cities’ nicknames nonsensically… Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers…”

    No disagreement here (and “LA Vikings” also certainly would fall right in line, wouldn’t it), but the Dodgers do get something of a pass on the “doesn’t make sense in Los Angeles” thing.

    At the time of the move, it was pointed out that Dodgers was truncated from “Trolley Dodgers” and that—updated for the times and transportation modes—the notion that “Freeway Dodgers” also could apply did make something of a decent platform for retaining the nickname.

    —Ricko

    Chance Michaels – could I add one tiny suggestion to your great tweak? How about just a single yellow stripe at the end of the sleeve. I think with that you might have a near-perfect Packers jersey.

    anyone watching the regular NBC olympics now?

    WTF is this? team speed skating?

    is this a “demonstration” sport now?

    I really like Patterson’s Broncos. Very clean and mixes classic with modern.

    Sonny Smith’s Bengals are very ambitious. I think the orange jersey would look great with those shoulder stripes and the striped helmet.

    McPelican’s Seahawks design is very well done. Very clean and I would love to see a complete home uniform with it.

    I also really like McGuire’s number and name font for the Saints, though don’t NFL regulations make that name font impossible? I can’t remember if they have a rule on that or not.

    Lange’s Vikings shield design is also very inspiring. I think a lot could be done with that to make a new alternate logo other than the giant Viking head, though I think the colors should stay purple and gold.

    I really like Muraro’s Dolphins unis. I have always hated that logo so using that ‘M’ is a nice touch and I like those orange numbers too.

    How can you hate a dolphin wearing a football helmet. I just wish that the dolphin’s helmet had the same logo, instead of the M. I don’t know what the effect is called.

    Pretty much the story of yours and JTH’s lives, init?

    —Ricko

    David Sonnys Bengals. Im a Bengals fan and I dont want anything close to their current design, ever.

    Wes Rickards Bills. Like my Bengals the Bills need to have a complete overhaul. Tweaking the design they have now would be idiotic.

    Ryan Muraros Dolphins design is a bit collegic, but I like the color scheme. I would like the Helmet to pop a little more.

    Anthony McGuire: New Orleans Saints. Tone down the font and we have a nice uniform set.

    This is my only vote out of both rounds. The best concept and in my opinion, the one jersey that is the most ‘finished,’needing the fewest tweaks before production is Brad McPelican’s Seahawks jersey. excellent blend of old and new. The logo is perfect, and everything about the jersey works well together, even though those elements are not my personal taste.

    David Montgomery’s Colts’ tweak looks like something the University of Kentucky would wear. Not Colts material. Haven’t we learned from the previous blue pants fiasco (and that was with the white unis… imagine the Colts in all blue)?

    Brad McPelican’s Seahawks’ jersey is hands-down the best. Not only is it the best of the contest, I thinks it’s one of the best white jerseys, period. I am not, nor have I ever been, a Seahawks fan, yet I would wear that jersey. It’s simple, yet the stripe says so much. I also like the matching stripe down the side of the jersey. The old color scheme with the meaner logo looks great. Good job, Brad.

    Neil Lommel’s Bills uni, hands down. When the page loaded, all I could say was WOW! I could actually see Buffalo wearing that uni. I have no artistic skills whatsoever so I applaud all the entrants. Good work all around.

    My votes go to:

    Neil Lommel’s Buffalo Bills – Great colors. I wonder how the ends of the shoulder stripes would work in the real world.

    Anthony McGuire’s New Orleans Saints – The stripes all match. Cool font. If the Saints don’t want it, maybe the Buccaneers could use it.

    Adam Wood’s New York Giants – Way-out-there and retro at the same time. I agree with Jim Vilk: put those TV numbers on the sleeves.

    Honorable Mention

    Chance Michaels’ Green Bay Packers – The stencil is a cool idea, but no secondary color on the jersey makes it too simple for me. It feels collegiate and military.

    Just for the record, the logo size on my Panthers jersey is due to the restrictions of TeamBuilder. The contest called for front, back & side views, and I only have a good template for the front – so…
Chance Michaels – could I add one tiny suggestion to your great tweak? How about just a single yellow stripe at the end of the sleeve. I think with that you might have a near-perfect Packers jersey.
Interesting idea, but one of the constraints I put on my design was that it had to be something that the Packers could/would actually adopt (and if I win, I’m going to take the jersey and submit it to the team). That means that the design has to fit the 2010 uniform template, which doesn’t have sleeves. So no stripes at all.

    When designing for the modern NFL jersey, you almost have to think in terms of a tank top. Sad state of affairs, but that’s reality.

    Syracuse is apparently the home team in that Syracuse/Villanova matchup on ESPN. I know this because Syracuse is wearing white and that is what the home team generally wears in basketball.

    I’m glad it’s not a color-on-color game, then I would have to look for subtle clues like the mid-court logo to know who was at home.

    You could say that…
    link

    Sorry that I am late on commenting on the uniform tweeks but I had to go across the state for a championship basketball game today.

    I like the following

    Detroit Lions
    Chris Markham’s Colts
    Christopher’s Browns
    T.J.’s Eagles
    Scott’s Vikings

    Eagles two shades of green? Was that so hard? Thank you. I dig the wing idea. T.J. Nicolaides -Winner.

    Virgilio Mathus, hell yeah. I like the dark contrast of the blue and orange. It looks really mean. The alt jersey could use some work though. Not sure if the orange works in that quantity.
    It would be a good look for the Bears regardless.

    I like Neil Lommel’s Bills and Anthony McGuire’s Saints. Wes Rickard’s home Bills is good but I don’t like the road one at all.

    For the record and to defend myself, my LA Jags design is NOT pink. If you are seeing that, perhaps you should adjust your monitor’s color setting. And maybe, by me laying the design over black, lightened up the color (to the eye) that I was going for, but I assure you, PINK was not the intention… As for my vote, I don’t remember who’s it was, but it was a SEAHAWKS one from last week that I thought was best. The Rams one this week with the dual horns on both sleeves is great too.

    Really overwhelmed with all the love my Eagles tweak is getting. – thanks all. This was my first tweak, and I’m looking forward to doing more, win or lose here. It’s fun to daydream about submitting the design to the Birds, like Chance said he’d do with his Packers design (which I love, by the way). But I believe the rumor going around is that Jeffrey Lurie’s wife hated the Kelly Green, and was a driving force in the switch to Midnight Green. I don’t think there’s a chance in hell they ever end up wearing this.

    Crossing my fingers that I can make it to the final round of voting. All of the submissions are pretty great, especially Chance’s Packers and Randolph’s LA Jags.

    After taking a second look at the designs, I should add that I think Braden Leibovitch’s Dolphins design is pretty darn good for going modern while keeping the integrity of the Dolphins trademark intact.

    Can’t warm up to the Packers plain white road jersey. Great thinking on Chance’s part, but I just have a strong personal dislike for plain solid white jerseys.

    I don’t really like solid, untrimmed white jerseys in any sport, unless of course it would include red birds on a yellow baseball bat.

    Finnish? Strong.

    Slovaks? Not finish strong.

    Oh well, Slovakia will just have to win the World Cup now. Hopefully they’ll look as good as the hockey team did.

    does anyone know what those logos/symbols are on Nike olympic uniforms? Each uniform, take the speedskating uniforms for example, that Nike makes has a different symbol for each country on the arm. It’s some crazy design, not like a flag or something obvious. It’s consistent for each country, the same star like design that is on the US speedskaters is on the hockey uni.

    As for last week’s batch of contest tweaks that I didn’t get to comment on, I really liked Gaffney’s Ravens, especially the purple jersey.

    I’m also in love with Garcia’s Rams. I love how the shoulder stripe looks to be inspired by the Arch.

    Todd’s Giants is very well polished. The jersey looks great, although I’m not sure about the borderized helmet logo and the pant stripes. It just screams “over the top” and 90’s to me.

    Oh, and as the designer of the Zach Crites Bills uni, I didn’t realize til I submitted that I left out the TV numbers, which would go on top of the shoulders, with possibly the “Bills Classic” red logo on the shoulder about the stripes.

    Great work by Chance Michaels on the Packers design. I love the stencil font – bonus points for the connection to Packer history. He has my vote.

    I don’t think Sullivan’s Rams are getting enough love. It’s a fairly simple design, but it’s unique to the team and actually very cool.

    Thanks for all the love on my jersey. I think Smith’s Bengals is awesome. Also, I agree that the rams jersey is not getting enough love either.

    I like what Mr. Mathus’s Bears redesign did with the pants, but not the stripes. The stripes look too much like the Steelers, and are an original design for the Bears.

    Mr. Micheals’ design does look nice with the stencils but no yellow kind of makes it look boring and plain.

    Props to Ryan Muraro for the first Dolphins tweak I’ve seen that appeared to have an air of dignity to it. It may not be as sunny as the current set, but it’s much easier on the eyes.
    I guess I’m a sucker for gold because I really liked the Lions jersey with the gold added, as well as a few from last week’s group.
    The NO tweak works for the number font, but it might be a little intricate for NOB use. Also, gold over gold? Horrible idea. Especially if NO continues to mismatch their golds.
    I liked the “LA” Jags design overall, and the helmets a lot, but I don’t know if California needs another team in red and gold.
    Most Broncos tweaks have started looking the same to me, but the grey pants kinda blew my mind. Freaking awesome, too bad we’re just focusing on the jersey.
    The other two that really caught my eye [besides my own gorgeous orange Bengals job (shameless)] were the Chargers tweak and the last Giants job.

    Absolutely love the Packers tweak by Chance Michaels. Retains the old-school elements that evoke Lomdardi and the Frozen Tundra while adding a classy update. I hope somebody shows this to Ted Thompson…

    My two favorites for the redesigns are will smith’s bills and christopher tatak’s browns.

    I really like the new design with some of the classic features of Cleveland Browns by Christopher Tatak.

    I love Chris Tatak’s design the best. His use of color and design has provided an updated, fresh look. I love the organe outlines. It really brings out the jersey numbers. His design makes the players a lot more visual and that is very important on tv.

    Uni Tweaks:

    I really like Brad McPelican’s Seattle tweak, as well as Jeff Provo’s Carolina tweak. These two stand way out next to the other entries. Good job, boys!

    I agree with Chris Markham that the Colts should have two blue stripes on their helmet.

    In my opinion, the best jersey is from Neil Lommel.

    I liked Patterson’s Broncos uniform. Good combo of old and new, and I’ve always liked that font – especially the 8s and 3s. It seems like a clean, functional design that would work well in actual play.

    The confidence that i got by using this product where it is available from link cured my obesity problem

    Brad McPelican’s Seahawks is great. My vote goes to that for sure. So refreshing and I’d actually be able to stand going to see the ‘Hawks…

    I don’t understand the love for the (Chance Michaels) Packers tweak?? It just doesn’t do it for me.

    Love the Cardinals tweak;)

    I love the simplicity and the mix of greens with Tj’s Eagles Uni. Could use an eagle somewhere though.
