Been nearly seven months since we featured some material from screen-grab kingpin Larry Bodnovich (if you missed the previous entries devoted to his work, look here, here, and here. Today we’re going to look at some shots he culled from a DVD with two 1939 college football games: Notre Dame at Iowa and South Dakota at Iowa. Lots of interesting stuff here:
• In the Irish/Hawkeyes game, the two schools began by wearing nearly identical uniforms — navy jerseys over gold pants. But in the second half, Notre Dame came out wearing green jerseys with white shoulder yokes (you can see the green tone more clearly in the sunlight). Did the Irish change jerseys specifically to avoid visual confusion caused by the similar unis?
• Here’s a good shot of Iowa running back Nile Kinnick, who scored the only touchdown of the game and won the Heisman that year.
• Never seen this before: The Irish’s reserve players laid down on the sidelines! “They’d get up when the play came their way,” says Larry.
• So much cooler than a jumbotron.
Lots of additional screen shots from this game are available here. And if you want to see moving pictures, the same highlight footage from Larry’s DVD is available for viewing here.
• Moving on the Iowa/S.Dakota game, look at this shot. There’s a dog on the field, right near the official. “Looks like a terrier,” says Larry.
• “See the big ‘1 10’ on the sidelines,” says Larry. “It seems they marked the 1st-and-ten scrimmage that way.”
Lots of additional shots from this game are showcased in this gallery.
Culinary Corner: Yesterday I mentioned that the folks at Heritage Foods USA were offering a really good deal — 15 pork chops for ninety bucks, with free shipping. This led several of you to get in get in touch with the horrifying revelation that you don’t know how to cook pork chops, at least not without drying them out. If ever there was a metaphor for — and a barometer of — modern civilization’s decline, this must surely be it.
Here, look, it’s easy: Get yourself some nice rib chops or pork porterhouses. They should be medium-thick — an inch and a quarter, say, or an inch and a half. Take them out of the fridge at least half an hour before you’re ready to cook, and sprinkle them with salt and pepper (and, I suppose, a spice rub if you’re so inclined, although good heritage pork like Berkshire or Red Wattle doesn’t need more than s&p).
Put a tablespoon or two of good olive oil in a heavy skillet — preferably cast iron — and heat it over not-quite-high heat so that it shimmers but doesn’t smoke. Add the chops and sear for two minutes. Turn them over and sear for a minute more. Reduce the heat to medium-low, turn the chops again, cover the skillet, and cook for four minutes more. Turn the chops one more time, cook for another three minutes (still covered), and you’re done.
The chops should come out of the skillet with an internal temperature of 140 to 145. Let them sit for a few minutes (you can make a quick pan sauce while you wait) and the temp should rise about five more degrees — that’s the dinner bell.
If they’re pink in the center, that’s good — they’re supposed to look that way. Contrary to what your Mom was taught by the overcautious food authorities of past generations, pork is not supposed to turn out white (or, worse, gray). Trust me. Then invite me over for dinner.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Did you know CCM used to make baseball gear? And some football, too (with thanks to Mike Hersh). ”¦ New retro kit for Arsenal (with thanks to Peter Kurilecz). ”¦ Uni number changes in Braves camp (with thanks to Jonathon Binet). ”¦ Good observation by Jeff Rich, who notes that Arizona State uses a gold resin bag. We are about to launch a baseball promotion, and I arrived at work on Monday greeted by a Yankee-clad mannequin at the front of the store. After much arguing, the manager allowed me to dress another manniquin in Mets garb. In addition, I was able to convince management to let me NOT use any black clothing.” That, people, is truly heroic work. … Coupla awesome bedsheets available on eBay, one with an NBA theme and one NASL (nice finds by Brian Mazmanian). ”¦ Faaaaascinating contribution by Christopher Petersen, who writes: “I recently bought a reusable Cubs lunch bag to take to work, and of course it has the little MLB logo on it to remind you that you just gave Bud Selig a little more of your money. But if you look closer, you’ll see it’s a bit different.” Definitely haven’t seen that before. ”¦ New shorts, vaguely based on Apollo Creed’s trunks from Rocky IV, for the LaCrosse All-Stars (with thanks to Jeff Brunelle). ”¦ It’s the law: Every few months someone in the media has to do a story about the uniform laundry scene (with thanks to William Yurasko). … Next-to-last item on this page indicates that the Blue Jackets will have a third jesey this fall.
Iowa wearing navy? Never. Black. Too close to navy, which is why ND switched to green.
WOW! As an Iowa alum, those pics were a real treat!

The gold rosin bag is probably a gold ASU sock filled with pine rosin.
1. That Iowa-Notre Dame piece is great. Love the unis.
2. No pics, but Providence wore black and Syracuse wore orange in a game at Providence last night. And there was a citrusy tilt in Ann Arbor, with Michigan in maize and Illinois in orange.

I concur, I’m surprised more clubs don’t try to incorporate those horizontal stripes across the midsection into their jersey design.
Those Apollo Creed shorts are pretty great! I am participating in a Beer Olympics in May and those shorts might become my team’s uniform bottoms, which will go great with our pre-selected team song of “Hearts on Fire”. It shall be a good year for winning the draw to be Team USA(everyone wants to be Team USA like everyone wants to be Mr. Black.)
Great news on the new Arsenal kits, I just hope Nike does a fitting tribute to the double winning side responsible for my Gunners obsession since 1971.

Thanks for the Iowa pics today, Larry and Paul.
For those of you who may not know anything about Nile Kinnick, take some time to look him up on the internet if you get a chance. He was truly a warrior-poet from a different era.
I though I remembered seeing that “recycle” MLB logo during its Earth Day promotions in the last few seasons.
Paul- since the chops come frozen do you thaw them in the refrigerator and for how long?
I can’t get over the simple athletic elegance of those uniforms. Beautiful, just beautiful. Imagine the texture. Puts today’s android unis to shame. Nice work this morning, Paul.

Thanks for the tips on the proper way to cook pork. I remember all-too well as a kid in the 1960s having pork chops for dinner and they were cooked to within an inch of their former lives. And in all fairness, meat processing has come a long way since then.
Nice job on the screen shots, Larry! South Dakota’s unis really stand out, don’t they?

I’m gonna say the Iowa pants in the ND game were actually white, and showed up goldish-looking due to being dirty and/or the age of the photos. Definitely black jerseys for Iowa, not navy.

There a many people, both then and now, both in Iowa and outside it, who maintain that, had his life continued on its path, Kinnick may have ended up a Senator from Iowa, perhaps even a Presidential candidate.

Though navy blue and black are close, so close that John Madden has said the Bears wear black even though their home jersey is navy blue.
If you compare a Bears jersey from, say, 1985 to the present (especially up close), you’ll notice the color shift. The ’85 jersey has a blue that’s so dark and “cloudy”, you could easily mistake it for black. The orange has a distinct reddish tinge. The present-day jerseys are definitely navy blue and orange.

Always thought the Yankees were closer to black than navy too.
FYI, the Navy’s “service-dress blue” uniforms (SDBs) and “winter blues” are actually black.
Don’t know why Notre Dame switched to green for the second half of the 1939 Iowa game, but according to the irishlegends.com web site: On October 8, 1921 – Although Gold and Blue have always been and still are the Notre Dame school colors, green football jerseys were first used in a game against Iowa in 1921 when Knute Rockne, realizing that Iowa’s dark jerseys would make it difficult to distinguish between the players, ordered the green worn. The switch wasn’t lucky for the Irish, as they were upset by the Iowan’s 10-7.

And I’d say nearly perfect. It’ll be perfect when they can use the old wordmark. But the socks were key. The shoulder stripes on the white were a bonus, I didn’t expect them to deliver on that.
Oh, and there’s apparently a yellow “thing” a href=”http://twitpic.com/1534pc”>on the back of the home jersey that is completely unnecessary (it’s visible on the placard next to that player). That also keeps it from being perfect. There’s absolutely no need for that thing on the back.

KT,
As a lotto observer, have you noticed that i’d call a double standard in Lotto’s templates?
If you are an observer of the Italian Seria A you’ll note that Lotto outfits sides like Chievo, udinese and a few others that escape my memory. Then compare those to the templates that Lotto ‘pushes’ on the unwasted masses in Argentina, Chile, et al. Those jerseys are not cut to the body and feature inferior materials and unflattering baggy cuts to make the players look like a bunch of JV’ers wearing the shirts w/ the numbers 40 thru 99.
That’s just the kits, owning a San Lorenzo track suit, practice jerseys and other Lotto wear I can tell you all of it is made from inferior materials…… crap, in fact.
Odd that clubs like Quilmes, San Lorenzo and others would allow a kit manufacturer to push them around like this.

I’m a big-time OKC Thunder fan. When they first introduced their new uniforms, I was with Paul that they were underwhelming and basically lame.
However, throughout the past two seasons, their away unis have begun to grow on me to the point where I actually like them alot.
But I’ve still got problems with the home uni, and I think the biggest issue I have, is that the name “Thunder” across the chest is outlined in white, and is one a white background.

It’s certainly an acceptable cap, but I don’t think any alt cap can really be considered the most beautiful cap ever. If it were, the Royals should be wearing it all the time.
Also, are the Royals changing their powder blue uniforms next year? The powder blue cap is using white letters on it, while the uniform has used royal blue script. Seems the two should be the same color for consistency.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a place to get pants that are appropriately hemmed, etc.?[/quote]
Unless the world has gone totally sideways, Dick’s or Sports Authority. Failing that, search “boys baseball pants white” on ebay and you’ll find more than you can handle.

Ricko – I am truly honored by the response. I have tried all of the traditional sources – Dick’s, SA, Eastbay. I am looking for a more of a specialized product with a higher hem, etc. Any leads? HELP! My son shouldn’t have to look like he is wearing pajamas to play ball.
Thanks.

When the quality is good it makes it even more fun to look at.

I had a rotary phone up until a few years ago. A friend was going to toss her seafoam green model until I offered to take it. Only reason I don’t have it now is because it messed up my dial-up internet. Hmm, now that I have DSL it’s time to hit the flea markets and look for another one.
Oh, and my kids are very fluent in VHS-speak. We have too many tapes to switch everything over to DVD.

Wow, is the apocalypse really that close?
Shoot, back in my days of Little League (I’m 21, so about ten years ago), pants landed well short of the ankles, and had plenty of elastic at the cuffs. I would just bring the elastic bottoms up high. Not because I was a conscious uni watcher back in the day, but because I found it easier to run the bases that way.

You could find the smallest pair available, take them to a tailor & get them altered to your son’s specification. That might fix the length problem & the bagginess problem in one fell swoop. Elasticizing the cuff might be tricky but I bet a good tailor could do it.

maybe a pair of football pants (i only kid slightly)…seems like they’re a tight enough fit, no one wears padding anymore, and well…they’re knee-length (or less)…

CCM made baseball equipment, so did KOHO. The only reason I know that is because Bryan Trottier did a ridiculous commercial where he takes a baseball to the head.

Always loved pork chops, no matter how tough. Gravy covers a multitude of sins. So does…what was that stuff they sold in the supermarket back in the 70s for coating pork or chicken? Can’t remember the name right now.

now i work a lot of leagues, and many consist of 24~35 professionals. most of my leagues are fairly smooth with the occasional jerk person, or occasional jerk team, but on wednesdays i run at jose diego gym in wicker park, and it is overstocked with ass~clown babies. i know times are tough, but i am sick of breaking up fights, and them projecting their own failures. here are the 7 t\’s in 4 games i called, i don\’t remember my partner\’s t\’s. in no particular order, just trying for recall, this is how you get a T from rpm…
1) untouched, a guy loses control of his dribble in the paint, ball pops up, some contact, but it\’s a loose ball, fo sho no foul…\”are you f++king kidding me a++hole\” tweeeeeeeet! he later admitted he was wrong for his reaction, and that it was the right call, he was just mad at himself. i fainted.
2) blatant over the back, what should have been a flagrant foul, and an obvious rach that knock the dribbler backwards. all 3, easy calls… \”are you f++king serious?! how can you give me 3 fouls in 30 f++king seconds, that\’s f++king horse s++t! you f++king s++k! as he runs at me as if he is going to hit me after the third whistle. um, tweeeeeet! (it was prolly over the course of a couple minutes, but in his mind 30 seconds)
3) to my partner, don\’t remember the call…\”how in the f++k can you call that from back there? BULLS++T! tweeeeet.(got\’a be looking out)
4) bench warned at least 6 times about entering the court before they are checked in, and the buzzer signals, this isn\’t hockey. less then ten seconds after i told them \”i will have to give you a penalty for the next infraction, someone runs on the court. \”hey! i just warned you abou…\” \”f++k you hippie\”. link?! this jerk clearly does not know me, does this guy want a hornet taco?! hippie?!!!!! but i need to keep my job, tweeeeeeeet.
5) after the above happens, a++~bag grabs a chair, and bobby knights it. hm, yeah, tweeeeet. and don\’t come back next week, that\’s a suspension. he was lucky i didn\’t do a hippie music tweet jam to send him off.
6) after a fierce elbow throw to someone\’s jaw, somehow the player didn\’t like the call. he should have been kicked out for that, and is lucky the opponent didn\’t punch him. but speaking to a teammate about my partner, and not under his breath…\”who is that fat f++k to tell me what to do\”. um, he\’s the ref, tweetle tweet.
7)down by thirty, someone takes 4 steps, then lowers his shoulder and knocks down a player partner tweets(has a choice of two fouls really). \”you suck c++k. lick it. lick it. s++k it a++hole\” that\’s a tweet, and a don\’t come back next week.
