Most of you reading this have seen this image at some point over the past few years. It’s the definitive view of the Blues’ infamous 1996 prototype jersey.
That image is a scan from this slipcased book, a copy of which was recently sent to me by the guy who wrote it, former Blues marketing VP Jim Woodcock. There’s a ton of uni-notable stuff here, so let’s take a look:
• Here’s a newspaper clipping from when the team’s logo was unveiled. And look how the uniforms were originally conceived!
• I’d forgotten that the Blues briefly wore blue skates in the early 1970s.
• Speaking of colored skates, there’s a nice shot of the Seals’ old white skates.
• The trumpet design isn’t the only proposed Blues design that never made it onto the ice over the years. You can see a bunch of other jerseys that were in the pipeline here.
• Here’s the press release from when the Blues’ mid-1990s uni was unveiled. Ten years earlier, the team’s mid-’80s design had been unveiled with what appears to be very little fanfare. Looks more like a wake than an unveiling, no?
• Jacques Plante made sure nobody would ever steal his cup.
• Speaking of Plante, the book says this is him and this is Glenn Hall. Same mask!
• One of my favorite discoveries in the book was the revelation that the Blues put local kids’ illustrations on their ticket stubs in the late 1990s.
• The book shows two really nice pocket schedules. I love the illustration on this one, and I’m intrigued by the NHL/NFL crossover on this one.
• Always interesting to see an NOB with small caps.
• I was fascinated by this shot. Never mind the Chicken — is the other guy (who’s Joe Micheletti) wearing a set of Blues Cooperalls? Never seen that before.
• I think we may have shown this on the site before, but it’s worth repeating: The Blues had a particularly loud crowd in the team’s early years, which led the Penguins to wear earmuffs on at least one occasion.
• Love the little butterfly logos on Cujo’s pads.
• Here’s a really nice view of the 1970 West All-Stars. The game was played in St. Looie that year.
• Jack Egers was a right wing, but at a holiday party he tried his hand at goaltending (while smoking). Classic photo.
• Check out this awesome shot of Jacques Caron’s pretzel mask.
• Man, they don’t make All-Star Game MVP awards like they used to.
• Last but not least: I’m kinda in love with the illustrations on this placemat. Could someone please get me one of those for my birthday? Thanks.

ESPN Reminder: In case you missed it yesterday, I engaged in a lengthy e-mail debate with my Page 2 colleague Jim Caple over the merits of figure skating costumes. Check it out here (and even if you already read it, a “Who won the debate?” poll was added to the page later in the afternoon, so go ahead and vote if you haven’t already done so).
I also had a Page 2 blog item that I think all of you will be interested in, about an absolutely amazing set of baseball-themed quilts that are being auctioned off this weekend in St. Louis. Check that out here.
Membership Update: Scott is getting settled in Seattle and is beginning to make his way through the backlogged membership orders. About a dozen new designs were added to the membership card gallery yesterday (including Alan Beam’s Memphis River Kings card, shown at right, based on a jersey that he designed for the team), and we expect to add more in the next several days. As for the cards themselves, a new batch of those should go out next week. Thanks for your patience.
Meanwhile, all of the footballs from last week’s giveaway have shipped out, so the ten winners out there should watch their mailboxes.
Uni Watch News Ticker: New uni numbers for the new Yankees (with thanks to Patrick Runge). ”¦ Brother Rice High School in Illinois played an outdoor “winter classic” hockey game a few weeks ago and wore very cool throwbacks for the occasion. Lots of additional pics here (with thanks to proud Brother Rice alum Joe Drennan). ”¦ “As you know, the NHL doesn’t allow ‘side of helmet’ brand logos,” writes Eric Romain. “The IOC slaps the Olympics sticker on the front of helmets but allows the manufacturers to keep their logos on the side. Apparently Reebok saw this as an opportunity — compare Reebok wordmark on the side of a store-bought helmet with the side logo on this team USA player. It’s easily twice the size as the side logo on any Bauer or CCM helmet over the last 20 years.” ”¦ Slight tweaks upcoming for Kansas football. Click on the thumbnail for a much larger photo. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Funny article about the Mets’ spring training parking-space pecking order. ”¦ Ladies and gentlemen, your new Milwaukee Brewers alternate road uniform. That sound you just heard was John Okray head exploding from joy. ”¦ TNOB alert. That’s the nationally ranked St. Patrick’s hoops team, from New Jersey (good spot by Dan Cichalski). ”¦ Weird move the Huntsville Havoc, who are wearing 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey throwbacks this weekend — with current and former NOBs. Not a good look, methinks (props to Stuart Greenlee). ”¦ Here’s some great news to keep in mind the next time you go to Yankee Stadium. ”¦ Alan Borock notes that the Winnipeg Jets used to have little jets as part of their red line design. ”¦ You want a good baseball photo? This is a good baseball photo. Supposedly taken the other day at the U. of Maryland (big, big thanks to Marc Walls). ”¦ New logos for the Delmarva Shorebirds. ”¦ Lots of great photos in this Orioles spring training slideshow, but the most intriguing shot is this one. The caption dates it as March of ’68, but the O’s had stopped wearing that cap after 1965. In fact, they never wore it during Frank Robinson’s time with the team. Must have been using old caps for spring training (excellent catch by Greg Ruby). ”¦ Excellent catch by Casey Lombardo, who found these shots of Bill Singer and Bobby Valentine wearing the Dodgers 1971 road uni, which had shoulder/sleeve piping — a one-year oddity. ”¦ Complete freakin’ awesomeness from yesterday’s comments: Michael Emody has diagrammed the evolution of the Wrigley Field scoreboard. ”¦ Some Giants uni number news toward the lower section of this page — search on the word “number” (with thanks to Tremaine Eto). ”¦ Sharks goalie Thomas Greiss is wearing his usual Sharks mask for the German Olympic team but he has the Sharks logo covered up (screen shot courtesy of AJ Chalifour). ”¦ Article about LA Kings uni history here (with thanks to Alex Kinkopf). … Some interesting thoughts about baseball managers and uni numbers here.
Those Huntsville ’80 Miracle On Ice jerseys look horrible. I would be ashamed to wear something that looked like that. The nameplates are incorrect to begin with.

The ‘regular’ helmet in the photo is a retail one, it’s not an example of what other brands are using. Bauer’s logo is about the same size, but they don’t have as much room on that spot of the helmet, as with CCM.
Reebok is just playing by the IIHF’s rules. And at least team USA isn’t slapping ads on there. Yes, the women’s teams seem to be using the retail logo setup with a sticker on the front, but the men have theirs made up.

Awesome Blues book – how the heck have I never heard of it until now?!?!?!?
I still have a Hockey Pictorial magazine cover with Garry Unger in the blue/yellow skates. The Seals actually had four different colored skate combos during their Charles O. Finley tenure, one of these days I will post pics of all of them.
In that “earmuffs” pic from the book, that’s Glen Sather on the left wearing #16 for Pittsburgh.
Phil, I think you’re right, those pants are too snug to be Cooperalls.

Marist definitly looked nice. Gotta love a good barber pole hockey jersey.
Bad decision to go color vs. color in that game, though. When I was looking at the thumbnails, in most of them, I couldn’t even tell if there was one or two teams in the photo.
Yeah, like I’m looking at the red line in that Winnipeg Jets photo.
This is bugging me. Why did Julia Mancuso have a uniform that was a lighter shade of blue than Lindsey Vonn’s? Mancuso also had a helmet and ski boots to match her uniform so it must have been planned out.

JTH pretty much answered the Bobby Mitchell/Illinois/Mich St question, but to augment his evidence:
Mitchell was drafted in ’58, so presumably fall of ’57 was his Senior season. Mich St hosted Illinois in both ’55 and ’57 and judging by that ginourmous “S” being spelled out in the stands I think it’s safe to say that’s where that photo was taken.
Not a big fan of Plan B Branding’s redesign of the Delmarva Shorebirds. In fact, Plan B ought to take a break from helping minor league teams with new logos, as the company’s work seems to be getting stale and unoriginal. The classic logo the team has used since 1996 is much superior to the “fierce” shorebird in the overhaul.

Yes, Pittsburgh also briefly flirted with colored skates.
The Seals variations were:
-green with yellow trim
-yellow with green trim
-white with green trim
-all white with green laces
and near the end of the 73/74 season, they abandoned the colored skates, the only time they had traditional skates while wearing the Finley-era green-and-gold unis…

…is almost certainly dated wrong. Is ’66, not ’68, and Orioles were, as many teams did back then, wearing the previous year’s gear for spring training. Robinson came to O’s in ’66.
In ’66 they returned to the Red Sox style stirrups, but had worn solid black ’63-’65.
I have other photos of FRobby dressed like that, and they all are obvious spring training photos (including, I’m pretty sure, a color shot showing that nylon windbreaker he’s wearing is olive green). Spring training was still pretty loosey-goosey, even through the ’60s. Wasn’t til the ’70s that the whole “marketing thing” really kicked in.

Back then every team employed some sort of striping at the waist. Getting away from that look is what contributes to the “practice jersey” look of modern jerseys.
The first team in the modern era to drop the waist stripe was Vancouver when they went to the “Halloween” V-design. After that, Philly and Quebec went to a single thin stripe at the bottom of the jersey that was so negligible that they could just as well have left it off. Even back then I was thinking they looked like practice jerseys, like something was missing.
That was early 80’s but it was still quite some time before the no-waist-stripe trend took hold, in fact Vancouver even redesigned their Halloween colors to reintroduce bold waist striping.
Even the two expansion teams in 92-93 (Sharks, Senators) had traditional-looking waist striping.
It was the Ducks that started the trend of goofy asymmetrical striping the following season, and St.Louis, Calgary, Islanders, Colorado and Washington quickly followed suit.
Then teams began adding whacked-out alternates with no waist striping, which eventually affected the look of their standard threads, and the world has gone to hell in a handbasket ever since…

An interesting article here, detailing the Blues’ almost-move to Saskatoon in the 1980s
link
Interesting story that not many people have heard. The team was sold, the NHL rejected the move, the old owners filed an antitrust suit, and (this is unprecedented) the Blues didn’t take part in the 1983 NHL draft because of the conflict. The team came within a few days of being disbanded by the league.
didn’t know that about the Pens and blue skates either, anyone have any pics or the years they did this in?
It was early 70’s, like St.Louis and of course the Seals. Had a picture once, don’t know what happened to it.

“Alan Borock notes that the Winnipeg Jets used to have little jets as part of their red line design.”
My recollection is that the line with the “jets” was only in place for the last half or so of the last season before the move to Phoenix. I specifically remember a local columnist speculating there was some relationship between the appearance of jets in the redline and the team’s new arena, America West Arena.
It’s just me, I like Anja wrecking better than the American’s finishing 1-2, I’m just sick…

Yeah, one of my favorite bands of the 70’s wearing a cool sweater, what a combo! I saw Rush on the Hemispheres tour and they came out wearing Islander jerseys for the encore (at the Nassau Coliseum). Also on Youtube is another vid, I think of Steve Marriott during his 80’s pub days, where the bass player has a green Northstars jersey…

Given Paul’s obsession with unique measuring devices and the recent fascination with the sport of curling, shouldn’t we all chip in any buy him one of the devices they use to see whose rock is closer to the button?
Of course it’s kinda big and a little unwieldy, so I don’t know if it’s the kinda thing you’d keep in a Brooklyn apartment . . .

Yeah, I wasn’t too impressed, especially after the obligatory “result of a two-year overhaul” statement and the “fierce” look.
We’ve all heard about how much time and effort is put into rebranding by now. Although, if you’re falling back on the same current themes – fierce mascots and lettering with pointy serifs – should that really take two years?
I’m assuming Plan B didn’t design the Montgomery Biscuits logo. link Now THAT is a hat I would wear. In fact, I’d even buy it.

Okay, as a point of reference, and based on the jersey I saw on the wall in Vince Promuto’s office, THIS (scroll down to Sam Horner) is the color of the Redskins’ jerseys of that era.
Most definitely nothing even CLOSE to maroon (even though it photographs that way sometimes).

only if the contract was in writing and disclosed to the new owners. It does come off as really bad pub to tell 10 fans to go away though. 10 seats isn’t that much money, and I doubt they are within 10 of capacity every game where they would be taking out paying customers. plus if they don’t show up that’s 10 less people buying concessions
Far more than the cost of letting ten people in for the rest of their lives, or until they grow up and move away from Sioux Falls is the cost of the negative publicity.
Now, you can sue for anything you like in this country, as we all know. It could very well be that you could create a minor firestorm if all ten people got together and hired a lawyer and they held a press conference and got some run out of it and the new owners, sensing they were at the very least losing in the court of public opinion, caved.
That’s without getting into the “what kind of jagov gets a tattoo of an independent minor league baseball team in exchange for lifetime season tickets?” question at all.
Also, it’s a reminder to the kids out there: tattoos are (largely) permanent. Don’t get a freaking canary.

Just got word from a Moose staffer that the major press conference scheduled for March 4 is on. Some of you may have heard rumours that the Atlanta Thrashers were being sold and moved to Winnipeg, but we’re hearing a different name now.
The Florida Panthers have been on the block for a while now, and their owners recently posted a link about their commitment to hockey in Florida without going into details past the end of this season.
One other name that keeps popping up is the NHL-owned Phoenix Coyotes.
I’ll keep digging, but there will be a major hockey announcement from the MTS Centre on March 4.

In the main article, Paul Lukas mentions the little ac in MacINNIS, but I’d like to also note Wayne Gretzky’s special rear hem, with the logos on his left. This is against convention, but we all know he used to tuck in his right side, so to have your logos obscured by the GoAT would be silly. I think the Oilers used to have everybody’s on that side so that Gretzky wouldn’t have a special jersey in that respect.
didn’t know that about the Pens and blue skates either, anyone have any pics or the years they did this in?
Very early ’70s, and I think only for a year. (Maybe 1970-71.)
Those were the days when the Penguins and Blues had a tremendous rivalry. The Plagers were villains in Pittsburgh, and I’m not surprised that it got loud enough in the St. Louis Arena for the Pens to wear earmuffs.
And Doug, condolences on the Chiefs.

Way late as usual these days. I just gotta say that the Blues hit it out of the park with the music-note. Hockey uni’s to me are all about having an iconic crest or logo, usually not requiring any wordmark or team name. Red Wings, Blackhawks, etc are obvious examples of this tradition, but it was good that expansion franchises came out and made their own marks: Blues, Sabres, North Stars, Flyers et al. Shame that each of these franchises F-ed with their iconic looks from time to time.

But “Pheasants” is a fine name. Every bit the equal of “Canaries”, especially since it has link in the state.
So long as they use “Fighting Pheasants” the way the Portland Beavers use “Lucky Beavers”, I don’t mind it.
I’m not sure they got the “fierce icon” they were looking for. Looks more like “pissed off” to me link
And maybe a little like Dick Cheney
Another word on Sioux Falls:
Sad to see the Canaries go. Fierce Pheasants, yeah, that’s the trick.
one more word on the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants … that’s not even a well drawn or accurate pheasant! I’m a pheasant hunter and know what they look like – and that ain’t a real pheasant.
I don’t know, I see some similarities
Fighting Pheasant link
Just a pheasant link
but then, I’m not a mighty hunter with this fierce beast as my prey
So let me get this straight – if, for example, the Orioles were to “re-brand”, they’d spend about a million bucks and 2 years for a company to come up with something like this, right?

too many comments to see if someone else addressed this but the reason Glenn Hall is wearing the same mask as Jacques Plante is that Plante designed/made Hall’s mask. Plante had a good business in the late 60’s/early 70’s with his mask company. made sense, if you were an NHL goalie wouldn’t you want one designed by the man who pioneered it?

what little jets?
This is so played out.
