I noticed on all of the leaked Nike World Cup shirts that there’s no swoosh. Is that becuase these are trademark drafts or will there actually not be a swoosh on the jersey? Could Nike be using those sleeve stripes instead (I wouldn’t think so)?
Is that the same FL H.S. as last week (two weeks ago?) or is it another one?

The Olympique Lyonnais shirt sponsor issue is more complicated. They are a French team after all and it is French law that prohibits gambling sponsors on uniforms (affected cycling team Unibet when they were around).
So why would a French team even have a gambling site sponsor? That answer would be money and attention–in the fall Oly Lyon fought to overturn the ban AFTER they got BetClic to be their sponsor. They tried to get the French League to overturn the ruling but they held firm. They got some short term publicity out of it but basically played without a sponsor for the first half of the season (unless they had a game outside of France in the Champions League).
Ultimately, Oly Lyon realized that they could make more money adhering to the rules and now have Sony’s Playstation as their shirt sponsor. So why would they play sponsorless last night then? Because the Oly Lyon management used the big game in the Champions League as a bully pulpit to shill for their sponsor BetClic. They already have Playstation uniforms but BetClic probably still had a deal in place for Champions League games.
So why doesn’t Paul Wiederecht’s Mets jacket have the pizza patch on it?
Nice DIY Mets jacket. At least it is pure in that it doesn’t [yet] have the Dominos Pizza-like 1st year at Debits Field patch.
And its basic colors are blue and orange.

yup, same thing I was watching. I only got to watch the first few ends, but how awesome was the 3rd end with 8 stones in the house? And how atrocious was NBC’s coverage? ugh.
I need to correct my own misinformation, Olympique Lyonnais has not been playing with Playstation as a sponsor (damn you Wikipedia for making stuff up!!!). They have been playing sponsorless in the French League.

I’m sure Budweiser had something to do with it.
Loved the blue USA shirts for the World Cup, the white ones are alright as well but the blue ones I loved.
Paul,
Slow ticker content day? Didn’t the Chrysler-Lake Mary High squabble get enough play a couple weeks ago?
I played some amateur baseball tournaments in Canada in college, and some teams had 6 or 7 left handed hitters in their linup as opposed to your usual 2 or 3 that you would normally have. We all figured it had something to do with hockey. I guess there might be something to that.
Oh, my goodness. I’ve got a Catfish Hunter flannel lying around somewhere. It’s probably at my parents’ house.
Was pumped to see Georgia Tech sweep the Tarheels last night, but more pumped to see the 1960 (My birth year!) Yellow Jacket Throwback jerseys. Figured I’d alert you, but should have known you would have it in the ticker already!! Way to keep on top of all that is UNI!!!! Love your blog – keep up the stellar work!!!!
Is that the same FL H.S. as last week (two weeks ago?) or is it another one?
Yes, it’s the same one from two weeks ago. I thought it was pretty much understood that the school gave in willingly to stop using the logo, Chrysler gave them til the end of the year to change it, etc. I think most of us here understand the logo infringment there and although we may not want to side with the big automaker, its pretty clear the logo was a copy of Dodges Ram.
I think the writer of that article was looking to spin the story and make Chrysler look like the big bad wolf, etc. Honestly, this story maybe made the paper one day as well as the online blog. It was a big story in the uniwatch community, but nowhere close to a story around Orlando, never even heard it on the local TV news or radio. I doubt Chryslers sales will suffer much.
I think one of the reasons that so many Americans are right handed stems from picking up a baseball glove and a bat at an early age. When your tee ball coach sees you holding a ball in your right hand and throwing that way, he’s probably going to set you up in the batters box as a righty. Then, when the children pick up a hockey stick, they are already used to batting right handed, so they hold their stick that way.
In Canada where baseball is not as prevalent, the younger kids will put their stronger hand on top (if they are righty, they shoot left) and therefore become more left handed hockey players.

“Everybody is into these uniforms and whatever changes there might be,” Larry Michael told Allen on a recent episode of Redskins Nation. “What can you tell us?”
“Well, first of all, I’m a traditionalist,” Allen said, which should end the black uniform talk. “I’m very proud of the Redskins uniform, and I’m very proud of our helmet. I’m talking to Coach Shanahan about some ideas that we have of utilizing our colors that we’re very proud of. But other than that, we’re gonna stick to our historic base. I had heard about this as well, because of the technical degree of difficulty so to speak of pulling off the Van Halen shows, they wanted to make sure the directions had been gon through with a fine tooth comb.
Much as I hate to say it, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that a Redskins change of outfits is inevitable. It won’t be up to Bruce Allen, Shanahan or Chief Z: it’ll be up to Snyder. I only hope that if Shanahan is still around, he won’t influence them into wearing something as god-awful as the Broncos. Allen likes the helmet because his father helped design it. As for the “throwbacks”, they contain so many historical anomalies it’s not funny.

You had to know when George Allen’s son took over the team that traditionalism would probably take over in Washington’s office. If a throwback/jersey sales booster must be done, they should do the one that the ‘Skins haven’t done yet: the link. Maybe a deep burgundy with metal flake and with a crisp white and red feather (or white and gold to hold with the current color scheme) would look really nice in HD.
Speaking of Bobby MItchell, not a lot of photos of him at Illinois floating around. Always loved those “four-stripe” Illlini road jerseys.

I don’t recall them “admitting” any thing. Please reference the photo in the link below. Admittedly, this is an ESPN article and not an official pronouncemnt from the Redskins, but this is called the “style they wore form 1965-1969”. The two players modeling are wearing socks that didn’t appear until 1979-80. At no time have they worn a shoulder stripe like that and they had never, ever had a spear on the shoulder. As a matter of fact, they had a big change in 1969, adopting the Lombardi Packer-style uni (although this could be ESPN getting the years wrong). This was phony, made up anniversary (70th, WTF?) with a phony made up commemorative outfit to sell jerseys.

Sometimes when musicians put crazy demands for food into their contract, it is for a reason. Van Halen back in the 80’s specified only brown M&M’s in a bowl. The reason they did that was so they knew that the contract was actually read. Their stage was big and complicated back then. They wanted to make sure that things were put together like the contract said. When they saw the bowl full of brown M&Ms, then they felt reasonably sure that things were done the right way.

Number one on that list? The notion that, unbeknownst to NFL history, the Redskins had actually worn maroon at some during the TV era or the 20+ years prior to it.
Don’t get me (or leon) started on all the things that weren’t even CLOSE to historically accurate on that alleged “throwback” (not the 1994 one; that one was damn fine).

There was no attempt to replicate what would have been leather helmets: just make them plain. Adding the feather to the helmet, while perhaps a cool look, would be historically innaccurate as they didn’t appear until 1958. This was to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NFL by having teams “throwback” to what they wore at the league’s inception. Obviously, teams that entered the league later would have helmet adornments not availbale to teams in 1938 and their anniversary helmets reflected as much.

For at least one season, what the Redskins’ road jersey was, was a white jersey with a white-burgundy-white shoulder loop.
Pretty much the accepted explanation among hockey equipment freaks. And despite some of the comments about how ‘right’ dominant hand on top is, there are benefits to both ways. Dominant hand on bottom will put your dominant eye over the puck and help your aim, and the stronger arm lower will help your shot. Dominant hand on top forces your dominant higher, so you have a tendency for better passing and vision, along with the strength of the hand on top allowing for better stickhandling.
Best thing you can do for a kid is to give ’em a straight blade when they’re starting and let them figure it out on their own. Even without prior experience in another sport, different kids will have different ideas of what feels right to them.

On days Paul doesn’t do an entry, why is the site completely closed? Why can’t there be just open comments? There may be uni related news that readers want to discuss or share. Is the need for comment moderation that great?
Because sometimes there are days when I don’t even want to think about Uni Watch. I don’t want to have to read the comments, I don’t want to deal with dozens of Ticker contributions, etc. I want to put Uni Watch out of my mind and focus on other things. On those days I shut the site down. I think you can all find something else to do on those days, which only come up once every six weeks or so.
I think as a whole, the feather helmet uniforms with the single shoulder loops were the Redskins’ best ‘modern day’ uniforms and could be worn today without modification. The way the Texans insert their shoulder wedge would work great for that loop.
The 1994 throwback was exceptional, except for the helmet. A darker helmet that matches the jersey color and a grey mask would perfect that look. I suppose the TV numbers would have to be added if it was a full-time uniform as well.
Great ESPN piece today about figure skating costumes. I’ve often wondered during the Olympics why the figure skaters don’t simply wear something like speed skaters. The costumes make it an absolute joke. Theater with medals, indeed.

Congrats, your Brewers are the new Mets. Everybody loves the old uniforms, the management is trying to shove the barley M down your throats, you have a beautiful pinstriped home uniform that never gets worn anymore, and now you have two alternate navy tops, just like how the Mets used to have two black jerseys. Brace yourself for a navy Milwaukee top at home or a navy Brewers top on the road: mistakes do happen and one will happen here.
Though to be fair, the Brewers stick to the official whites for Opening Day and other special holidays, and they don’t wear road caps at home.
And sure, congrats on getting a city-on-front road top. And sorry for ruining your parade. When the Yankees come out with an oatmeal alternate home uniform or something, feel free to return the favor.

It took 10 years for the Brewers to finally realize that having the name of the city on the away jersey is important. Although it would be great to have had “Milwaukee” on the gray uniform, I will take it anyways. Nothing has been announced on Brewers.com yet, I just happen to see it on the Brewers online shop. I would hope they don’t wear that top at home. As far as the retro uniforms are concerned, the Brewers organization has said while the fans and the organization love the old look, they only want to wear them every once in a while (It used to be every home Sunday game, then every home Friday game, last season was every first Friday home game of the month, and this season has many throwback games because of the 40th anniversary celebration.) As a huge Brewer fan I am fine with the once in a while thing. It makes it more special when it does happen.
As soon as the Crew come out with black uniforms, then I will consider them the Mets. This is a big win for me personally, and a bunch of other Brewer’s fans.

I guess it isn’t a big deal to many. But, I have been contacting the Brewers for the past few years to get “Milwaukee” back on the road uniform. They were one of a few teams (four maybe?) that didn’t have their city or state on their away uniforms. It has been 10 years since the city name has been on the Brewer’s road uniform, and I am glad to see it back.

To a point. Aren’t the web patterns some sort of branding thing, though?? In any case, the webs are just printed ornamentation on an otherwise form-follows-function garment (i.e., a bodysuit) — you can print a web, a stripe, a block of color, whatever, it’s all just printed ornamentation. That’s different from a costume whose form has nothing to do with function. Unless the function is artistic expression. Which, again, means you’re not talking about sports.

Are, then, spider web patterns and such on alpine skiers a kind of “costume”, too?
Uniforms are ALL about artistic expression, otherwise it’ll all be black vs. white games. However, the spiderweb design (to my knowledge) does not effect the final outcome, and plays no part in which athletes receive medals and which don’t.
Also, it’s uniform, in the sense that all members of a country’s ski team wear the same thing.
Although I don’t know that deciding to make the athlete look like Spider-Man is necessarily about “form following function”. There’s just a tad of theatrical embellishment in there.
(Wasn’t disagreeing with you—because was thinking the same thing last watching Johnny Weir is what appeared to be a “Playmate of the Month Going Clubbing” outfit—just pointing out a potential, “Oh, yeah, well what about…?” counter argument we might hear).

How come you didn’t make the comparison to Gymnastics floor routine. It seems like the natural olympic comparison. Artistic expression to music which being judged by a panel. They wear uniforms.

Because if there’s one thing that we can all agree on, Rhythmic gymnastics is not a sport.
Honestly, I think I side with the compromise position on that debate. Wear a costume, but with a national emblem since it is the olympics.
It’s an individual sport that relies at it’s core on individual expression. The skater is playing for themselves, they should wear whatever they feel enhances their performance the most. If they’re trying to emphasize the technical and athletic aspect of their routine, simpler is better. If they’re trying to emphasis the artistic side, the costume should reflect that.
Figure skating is a really weird hybrid that can be interpreted in different ways, and that should be reflected in the costume.
Re: the costume vs uniform debate
1) Anyone else have the US snowboaders Olympic uniforms pop into their heads while reading Page 2? With the demim and flannel look, they’re getting onto the slippery slope towards costumes.
2) I’m with Paul all the way on his arguments. Paul & Caple danced around the is figure skating a sport or not question and that’s a debate I’d really like to see. Personally anything that is judged is hard to call a sport. (Athletic yes, sport no). Beyond figure skating there are a few ‘sports’ I am not 100% comfortable with. For example, why are there style points in ski jumping? The longest should win, period. They don’t take deductions if you splash too much sand in the long jump do they? And what about moguls, and the other X Games type sports. Sure they are physically impressive, but still rely on judges.

I wasn’t talking about rhythmic gymnastics. I was talking about the floor routine of the summer olympic team all around, or individual floor routines.
“That’s mostly because they aren’t absolutely necessary, just as stirrup socks — which I know you love, Paul (and so do I) — are not necessary for baseball players. Whatever their roots, stirrup socks are nothing more than fashion. And there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Gotta say, Caple does have a point there.

That and the fact that you know when to use “criterion” instead of “criteria.” That was good enough for me to declare you the winner.
Most fun side event of watching a Team Canada game – counting the jerseys in the crowd. I caught just about every Men’s team variant since the 80s at one point or another, save goofy stuff like the green World Juniors jersey. I think the only one I couldn’t confirm was the 96-98 World Cup / Nagano version, which is a shame because I like that a lot even if it’s associated with two failures.

But where was he going with it? The overwhelming majority of baseball players DON’T wear stirrups. And for the players that do, it’s just one piece of the uniform (two pieces, actually).
Also, as far as I can tell, Paul’s not saying there’s no room at all for individuality in figure skating.

It is a great day for me. Arena football will be on TV again this spring
The AFL has already reached a one-year deal with the NFL Network to broadcast a Friday night game of the week, beginning with Chicago at Iowa on April 2. Kurz said 14 of the 15 teams will be featured during the regular season.
The eight-team playoffs and Arena Bowl, which will be played at the home of the higher seed, will also be televised.

You know, I can’t help but like this. Well, at least I know I don’t hate it.
We all know mini logos over NOB’s look cluttered and stupid (yes, you too, Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings). The least stupid NNOB solution is just that, no names on back. This then leads to a question of rear number placement, which can really screw up a good thing.
To my 21-year old eyes, the back logo keeps everything in the right place. The numbers aren’t too high up, and there isn’t a huge gap at the top, as if the NOB got ripped away. So it’s like there’s nothing up top, yet there is, both at once.

According to the story I read, the front (seen inside the park) isn’t being touched. The back (seen from that view) was falling apart. Its supposed to come back visually and functionally identical to how how its always appeared.

So I must be the complete odd ball of the world. I play hockey left-handed, baseball right handed, and have played golf both ways for most of my life (I’ve settled on right handedness for the most part but it really helps sometimes having a left handed wedge and being able to use it).
Earlier someone (Jeff P maybe? Too lazy to find it) pointed out a few things from a hockey standpoint and I want to add a couple things to it. Right-dominate right shots should have harder slap shots while Right-dominate left shots should have stronger wrist and snap shots. The wrist and snap shot tend to use the bottom hand as more of a fulcrum than a power generator whereas the slapshot derives more from the bottom hand to generate the force and then act as a fulcrum prior to it’s release.
(I could be wrong in this, I’ve never seen a scientific study about this or baseball handedness, if someone has seen one of those studies please pass it along).
apparently i am part of only 19.6% of the sports “world” in the caple~lukas debate. that’s right, i said it, i like figure skating, and i like the costumes, they do add to the enjoyment, aesthetics matter. no, i am not rooting for weir, but i am rooting for the big american with feathers on his hands and the swiss spinner.

First hockey stick I was given was left handed, first golf club I swung was left handed. I played baseball before either and swung right handed. I can hit for more power left handed in baseball and golf but I have far more accuracy lefty. I tend to not be able to hit anything other than a straight fastball lefty.
Everything else in life I do right handed. I’m pretty uncoordinated with my left arm when it comes to doing anything with finesse.
Another upside to being right hand dominate and a left handed hockey player…when I only have one hand on the stick it’s my strongest hand so I have more control over poke checks!

funny you say that — yesterday, paul showed me that article which he tickerized for today, and i said something similar…except for the fact that i do everything righty, back in my pre-salad days of little league, sporting a .700 average (pats self on back), i actually thought i could switch hit … turns out i COULD hit lefty (albeit not nearly as well)…but holy crap — the POWER i had…really, night and day — whereas i was a gap/doubles hitter righty, i could actually jack a ball or two in BP over the fence (symmetrical) lefty; something i could NEVER do righty, even “self-hitting” or off a tee, or in BP…but lefty, i could really explode
i attribute this (in part) to the fact that, at the time, i had a two handed backhand in tennis, so the stroke came somewhat naturally…
never gave too much thought to it until paul showed me that NYT article, but definitely had more power (in baseball) lefty, but could really almost control where i was hitting the ball righty, and with much better results…quit the switch-hitting experiment after one season, as the average was way down batting lefty…shows how much a hitter relies on shoulder strengh, aside from wrists and upper body rotation (as well as lower body drive)…either that or i was just doing it wrong

I would prefer they end in a draw as opposed to being scored or judged to decide a winner.
Boxing/wrestling are in a sort of grey area. They are judged/scored, but at any time, either competitor can end the match cut and dry by knocking out/pinning his opponent, thereby removing all subjectivity from the hands of the judges.
A figure skater, or rather, his performance, is competing against a set of predetermined criteria. A panel of judges interprets how well the performance met those criteria.
That’s why I wouldn’t consider boxing a performance art, and the scoring is subjective, so it’s not really a game, either. Closest to a sport, but of both competitors emerge at the end, the scoring/judging comes into play and breaks my definition.
