Uni Watch DIY Project: Jasmine or Earl Gray?

P1010183.JPG

[Editor’s Note: Today we have a guest entry from Joe DeAngelis, who did a DIY project nearly 20 years ago — and who, I’m fairly certain, is the only DIYer whose toolkit included a cup of tea. Enjoy. — PL]

By Joe DeAngelis

It was 1991, before the dawn of the “throwback” era in sports marketing, and I wanted a vintage style New York Rangers wool jacket. None of the major apparel manufactures were offering such an item. So if I wanted one, I knew I’d had to create it myself.

I purchased two chenille patches — the Rangers’ logo and the vintage NHL shield — for $5 apiece at a card show. Then I went to my local school uniform supplier and looked to purchase a basic wool jacket. I refused to settle on stock items and asked if I could special-order my base coat in the color and stripe schemes I wanted. The reply: “Sure, but it will cost you full retail [$90] and take about a month to construct.”

In the meantime, I was preparing my patches by soaking them in tea for 20 minutes to help “vintage” them in appearance. I also searched the world over for a chenille sleeve patch of the crossed USA/Canadian flags. I couldn’t find one, so I settled for a tackle twill patch and moved forward. MAJOR BLUNDER!

With the front and sleeve patches taken care of, I turned my attention to the back of the jacket. I didn’t want a generic design, so I went back to the same uniform supplier and asked what they recommended. They hit a home run for me, as they were able to construct chenille “Rangers” lettering in the same block font found on traditional Rangers jerseys. The cost was $4 per letter ($28 total).

A week later the supplier left me a voice message asking if I wanted the letters on the back to be positioned in a diagonal arrangement, like on the Rangers’ jerseys. My reply: NO! Too common. I wanted the letters laid out in an arc, similar to the Rangers’ 1946-47 sweater. The supplier obliged, and now we were near final construction.

One final touch that I wish I could go back and change: I had my name, “Joe D.,” sewn in on the front. I hate it. I’d like to pass the jacket down to one of my two sons and possibly their children after that, so I wish it didn’t have my name.

All in all, I love my $145 jacket but I do have a few regrets. I wish I could’ve found a chenille crossed-flags patch, I would’ve colored the snap buttons red instead of blue, and I never should have had my name permanently sewn onto the coat.

Still ,I do laugh when I see what Mitchell & Ness offered fans years later — I guess I was on the right track.

========

Paul here. I was particularly intrigued by Joe’s use of tea to impart a vintage look to his patches, so I asked him how he came up with that technique. Here’s his response:

Years ago I was scouting a 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle card and stumbled upon a shady vendor who’s been accused of selling high-end counterfeits. With such a costly purchase looming I did some homework and learned that “tea soaking” was one of the many practices for making newly printed cards appear vintage off-white.

I wanted to make the new chenille patches appear vintage for my project, so I adapted the tea-soaking method in short increments until I reached the desired tint of off-white for my jacket — about 20 minutes total. I had to be careful not to stain them too much, as the jacket’s striping was a new bright white.

What color is your house?: Curling gets underway at the Vancouver Olympic Centre today, and Jeff Nephew has reported some alarming news: The familiar red and blue rings of the house have been changed to green and blue, to match the color scheme found everywhere else in Vancouver (and on the Vancouver city flag). As you all know, green is my favorite color, but this just doesn’t seem right.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of curling, the Norwegian team is going for the John Daly look. ”¦ The WVU hoops team wore an “FS” patch last Friday, in memory of former player and coach Fred Schaus. ”¦ Major find here: home movie footage of a 1947 Ole Miss football game, with Charlie Connerly at QB (No. 42). Note that the opposing team — Vanderbilt? — appears to have been wearing truncated UCLA stripes, which seems odd for that era (big thanks to Rodney Nichols). ”¦ Micahel Cesarano is working with the Queensborogh Community College baseball team to create throwback uniforms that the team will wear this spring to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary. ”¦ New soccer home kit for Ireland (with thanks to Terence Kearns). ”¦ Roger Faso pointed out something I’d never noticed before: The A’s team card in Topps’s 1968 set shows the players wearing vests with gold undershirts. Did they ever wear that ensemble on the field, or even in any other photo shoot? ”¦ Remember the rumors of UNC wearing this helmet for the Kickoff Classic? Here’s some follow-up from Jordan Woodson: “Recruits coming in have confirmed the football staff is showing off new jerseys as well as the pewter helmet. Apparently pewter is one of several options proposed to the staff, and not highest on their list. One recruit commented on a ‘pearly white’ and a ‘smoky black’ helmet.” ”¦ Yesterday I suggested that someone might want to colorize this shot, and Marc Swanson did a nice job with it. ”¦ New installment of Joe Skiba’s Equipped went up yesterday. It’s a bittersweet episode — Skeebs’s farewell to Giants Stadium. You can access it on the Giants’ home page. ”¦ This awesome ABA pillow really needs to end up in the hands of a Uni Watch reader (big thanks to Ben Traxel). ”¦ You can download the Richamond Flying Squirrels’ official style guide specs here (with thanks to Joey Surma). ”¦ “I found pics of an interesting pair of the ‘I Love NY’-edition Nike Air Max Lebron lows,” says Matt Powers. “Unlike the highs, the lows feature a small air unit with no flywire. The LBJ23 logo has been replaced by a question mark, which doesn’t bode well for Cleveland’s hopes for retaining his services.” ”¦ New baseball uniforms for Texas Tech (with thanks to Robert Snyder). ”¦ Two American Olympic hockey goalies have been told to make some adjustments to their masks (as noted by Tyler Hull). ”¦ Awesome find by Coachie Ballgames, who writes: “Came across this astounding 1943 program for a baseball exhibition by American and Canadian Armed Forces played in Wembley Stadium in London. Curious to know what made the U.S. Army v. Canadian Forces game a ‘challenge match’ whereas the U.S. Air Force v. U.S. Ground Forces” game was an ‘all professional game.’ So many details to admire here, highlighted by the air raid warning at the bottom.” ”¦ Here’s another colorization from one of yesterday’s wire photos, this time by Shaun Ploenzke). ”¦ “I am an avid Cubs collector, and recently acquired the find of a lifetime,” writes Rob Steinmetz. “It’s a 1909 Harry Steinfeldt road jersey (Steinfeldt was the fourth member of the infamous Tinker to Evers to Chance infield), acquired from a Chicago-area family that owned the jersey for 100+ years. This is a one-year style road jersey, in all original condition. The jersey was originally obtained by a family member who had a tryout with the Cubs shortly after Steinfeldt’s departure. He didn’t make the team, and kept this jersey.” There are some spectacular details here, including the curved rear yoke, the buttonholes on the sleeves (so long-sleeve attachments could be added if desired), and the little clasp on the cadet collar. ”¦ Joe Hredzak notes that the ubiquitous Vancouver Olympics logo looks an awful lot like the image on a can of Rockman malt liquor, which hit the market at least three years ago. … One last curling tidbit: How gorgeous are these stamps? (Thanks, Kirsten.)

I really like the Texas Tech throwback baseball uni. The lettering down the placket looks good, and I’m curious to see how Under Armour creates a faux-flannel material.

    Paul-

At work we use coffee, tea, different color inks and dyes to age patches, garments and paper.

I don’t think Ryan Miller should have to remove the tribute to his dead cousin from his helmet. I can understand removing “Miller Time”, but having him remove the tribute is a load of bull. The IOC has other things to worry about.

Funny, here at work I use coffee to make embarrassingly shaped splotches on my pants and tie…

I was so excited for curling today, and you’re telling me they’ve messed with the house?! What kills me the most is that, even though blue is still part of the color scheme, they’ve moved it to the outer ring instead of simply changing the red to that greenish color. (which would have just made more sense in my opinion)

you know what…disregard previous comment. instead of staining patches with coffee and tea, give some to me so I can see properly.

Just checked the rules of curling at the Federation’s website. While they describe the width of the concentric circles that make up the house, they do not specify that the rings have to be particular colors. So I guess green and blue, while not traditional, are permissible.

You\’re telling me that releasing an \’I Love NY\’ shoe in Knicks\’ colors with a cheesy question mark on the bottom amid the media rampage that LeBron James is the number one target in New York\’s free agency crosshair makes you think that it\’s more likely that he jumps ship. To me, this makes it more likely that he stays. I\’ve never seen a more blatantly and unapologetically capitalist marketing effort to keep the folks in New York hopeful that he\’ll sign there and keep them buying his product in the mean time.

A question mark? Seriously? I think he\’s staying right where he belongs, in C-Town. He\’s just maikng his money in New York while he can, because he stands to lose a lot of customers in New York when he denies them after courting them in the media and marketplace.

In small town Saskatchewan when I was curling as a high school student I once saw yellow and blue rings.

The Vancouver “Rockman” is quite common in Canada. In Ontario people build little “rockmen” everywhere. It’s usually travellers buidling them near rest stops along northern highways. Kind of a way to leave your mark. You see them everywhere, it’s been going on for years and years.

cool thanks for the heads up phil, i’m pulling up the app on my phone to set it now.

Is anyone else appalled by those Lebron shoes? Is that Nike campaigning for LJ to move to THE market so it can hyper-publicize the guy?

(As if no one knows Lebron, right? Kinda like the Super Bowl needing a universal “icon” to foster its brand identity … lol.)

    Blah.

About the ticker item about UNC’s proposed helmets: Yes, not wearing light blue has worked out so well for you in the lsat two years, UNC. You lost in all-dark blue against Florida STate at home (blowing a big lead) and you’ve lost about five in a row in the dark blue pants. Go ahead and get that “smoky black” or pewter helmet and get blown out by LSU.

NBC will be live streaming all of todays Curling and Hockey. And it looks likes they will do this throughout the Olympics.

Ok, never thought I’d do this, but I need the help of the Uni Watch faithful. My wife is a high school swim coach, here in Massachusetts and is trying to come up with a “merit decal” system, like the tOSU Buckeye leaves for her swimmers (boys and girls) that they could wear during competition. Here’s the catch can’t increase the hydrodynamic drag on the swimmers as they compete. Any ideas out there??

You could always brand the kids. If the governing body complains say it was an accidental burn and berate them for making life tougher on burn victims. As long as the students don’t get huge keloids the scaring should give them significant drag.

On another note, when did the practice of giving downhill skiers blue lines on their course begin.

Yes, Tuesday is “Nova Scotia Day” at the Olympics, and I’m sure our politicians who are out there will be thrilled that Al Roker mentioned our name on NBC. It cost us nearly $3 million to secure that privilege, so I hope we get our money’s worth.

Certainly shirt sponsors are ubiquitous in big-time club football, but that Republic of Ireland shirt is the first national team shirt I can ever recall with a sponsor’s name. What’s up with that?

The \”rockman\” is an inukshuk, a landmark built be Inuit and other natives of the Arctic as a marker for travel routes, hunting grounds, etc. It has permeated Canadian Culture since being featured in a Historica Heritage Moment, a series of shorts on Canadian history shown during commercial breaks.

    Life is odd sometimes.

Looking back on it, maybe I sensed something, and that’s why I couldn’t get myself to provide Phil any “Benchies” last weekend.

Growing up, my cousin Ron (who lived in San Diego but his family drove back here every summer) was the closest thing I had to a little brother. He later came to Minnesota to attend college and stayed here.

In 1976 we were watching the White Sox in their tails-out white jerseys and navy pants on TV and he said, “They look like a dis-spirited softball team.”

And I thought, “That would be a pretty good premise for a comic strip.” A couple years later I started messing with the idea.

The bar in “Benchies” went through several names until I remembered we called Ron “Bub” or “Bubber” when he was little. So it seemed only right that the resident local tavern be Bub’s Pub.

Always a quirky kind of guy, he graduated magna cum laude (or something) but was content to spend his working career delivering the mail. And he traveled to Europe a lot, taking excellent photos. Had one book published, “Blue Cats”.

Saw him only for a couple hours every year the afternoon of Christmas Eve at my cousin’s home. Had missed the last year two years cuz of illness and this year was extremely bloated, didn’t look well at all. Said he’d contracted mercury poisoning.

Saturday night he collapsed at home, went into cardiac arrest in the ER and died. He was 61. Still waiting on results of autopsy. He is the third child in that family of five kids to die. The youngest to die passed away at 31 a long time ago. The two remaining sisters are flying in later this week. Haven’t seen either of them in probably 40 years.

So, not that it matters to the world, or even to “Benchies” readers, but the real-life “Bub”–the guy who gave me the idea for the whole thing–is gone.

Joe DeAngelis: great jacket but you’re being way too hard on yourself over having your name on the front. If my dad handed down a jacket like that to me I would love that it had his name on it and I’m sure your children and grandchildren will feel the same way about having it.

Nice work, Joe D. Your teabag idea is genius and I may use it on a DIY project of my own. Sorry you don’t like having your name sewn in. FWIW, it was one of the things I first noticed in the photo and thought it was a nice touch. If, however, you really hate it, can’t you remove it?
About 10 years ago, my nephew brought me a rugby shirt back from a trip to Ireland. Not sure how “authentic” it was, but it was Black and tan and had 3 stitched “ensigniae” across the front. Above the left breast was a cool red white and green crest with the words “London Irish RFC” below. In the center was a tan “Guiness” logo with harp and all done in tan. Over the left breast was a dreadful “Cotton Oxford” bumpersticker. This was the manufacturer of the shirt and this ruined the whole thing for me. So I borrowed a thingie called a “seam ripper” from the girl friend and armed with that and a needle set to work. It took quite a while, usually while watching a game so as not to seem too dorky, but I eventually removed the whole thing, with only one barely discernible nick. I love the shirt, despite it’s blatant alteration. (Thought there was something seriously wrong with me until I read on UW the things people do to ballcaps). Joe, it’s hard to make the world your own, so I say get yourself a needle and seam ripper and exorcise your threaded demon.

    agree wholeheartedly!!!

The green and blue rings don’t bother me at all. I’ve curled a lot and seen a lot of different colours – blue and red are the most common, but I’ve also seen a lot of yellow and black and sometimes green.

What does bother me in that photo is that the handles on the rocks look to be yellow and red. I’d much rather see handles that match the rings. But that’s just my own thing.

I notice that the photo is from the 2009 World Juniors at the Vancouver curling venue – maybe for the Olympics they’ll have matching rocks?

    —Ricko
My condolences Rick. It matters, because he mattered to you. And in the way that Paul writes touching tributes to the people he knows, that we may or may not, your short back story of Ron was a touching moment in honor of a man who obviously meant something to you.
Rick, my condolences for your loss. Hope you find the peace & tranquility during this difficult time.

from the most recent wirephoto edition, I couldn’t help but notice the incongruity of a Cubs and Reds player both wearing caps with the SAME “C” logo!!

It’s especially bizarre that the Cubs wore a cap that year where the “C” did not match the “C” in “Cubs” on their uniforms!!

When you throw Cleveland into the mix, how bizarre is it that three teams in the same sport have employed the same typefont “C” on their caps at some time in their history??

The rock colors really don’t bother me, despite the mismatch. I thought red and yellow were the standards. And red and yellow doesn’t match with garden variety red and blue houses anyway.

The A’s team card in Topps’s 1968 set shows the players wearing vests with gold undershirts. Did they ever wear that ensemble on the field, or even in any other photo shoot?

Pure conjecture, but I’d expect the yellow unders were a spur-o’-the-moment idea of mercurial owner Charles O. Finley, who was a notorious micro-managing owner and tormented us for a decade or so in Oakland (while building and dismantling an incredible dynasty). Of course in ’68 Finley dragged the A’s out of KC, but the photo still shows KC caps so it was clearly an offseason shoot before Finley showed his hand.

My guess would be he got the yellows at a KC discount store and thought they’d look good. (He was a nut about team colors.) This was the man that promoted orange baseballs, after all. Great shot, though. Never seen that combo before or since.

It’s not a rockman. It’s a Inukshuk. These are stone landmarks built by the Inuit people because the land above the Arctic Circle has almost no natural landmarks. The are used for navigation.

An Inukshuk is often confused by non-Inuit with an Inunnguaq, a cairn representing a human figure.

Someone with more of a biting sense of a sense of sarcasm, and less fear of offending others might suggest that if Jamaica has a bobsledding team, then it’s proven that black and the winter Olympics CAN peacefully co-exist, and therefore that logo should be updated immediately!

Obviously, the A’s moved to Oakland in 1968, and from what I can tell, the decision was made right after the 67 season. So they wouldn’t have worn “KC” caps in spring training in 68. The yellow sleeved photo must be from 67 or earlier. So must my memory of seeing the A’s in grey road vests (with a bit of a green tint) in Chicago, while wearing the yellow sleeves. The striped stirrups seem to indicate 67.

10-1 isn’t nearly as bad as either of those scores, but I was watching the end of the Canada/Switzerland women’s hockey game yesterday and I thought it was a pretty classless move on Canada’s part to pull the goalie for a sixth attacker on a delayed penalty with about 40 seconds remaining in the game.

It is, and that’s why some of the players on the Canadian and American sides have asked about a mercy rule. Players will still be encouraged to score for television, but after X-number of goals, there is a maximum goals-for and goals-against.

ANY message is not needed. when the guy talks to the papers he can talk about whatever and maybe they will print it. the “field” of competition is no place for it. no personal message should be on any “uniform” in the olympics no matter how benign in your opinion. if you allow that, where does it end? religion, politics, meat advisory board? who decides what is okay, and what is not? will we let every athlete put on personal messages? potential subversive advertising(miller time)? quite simple, no messages, then there is no problem. i love personalized masks in the nhl, but it just is not needed in the olympics, all the goalies can cram them with walnuts. in other words, this is exactly one of the things the ioc should be looking at.

subversive? HA! what the hell was i thinking? subliminal was the word i was looking for, and even that isn’t the best.

While not a uni issue, does the post Canuckie goal foghorn bug anyone else? Doesn’t seem in the spirit of the Olympics, especially while skinning a minnow 8-0. Sure. But someone on the bench could have given her the “call off the dogs” signal when they saw her heading that way. Or told the skater who was ready to jump onto the ice that enough was enough and not to bother.

I’ve studied the numerous football uniform design changes at Vanderbilt through the years and I’ve always suspected that the “UCLA shoulder loop” probably originated at Vanderbilt, especially since the man credited with creating the UCLA stripes, Red Sanders, coached at Vandy before coming to UCLA.
