Got a DVD in the mail the other day from reader Kevin Gallo. It contained several uni-related baseball video clips from 1983, including one that by all rights should be legendary throughout the uni-verse, although I’d never seen it before.
“I have a decent amount of old tapes I am currently going through and burning to DVD,” he wrote. “I wish I knew how to upload them to YouTube, but I haven’t had much time to figure it out.”
Fortunately, I know how to upload things to YouTube, so that’s what I did with Kevin’s material. Let’s start with this short Giants commercial:
I always hated that design, and I’d have to think an old-schooler like Robbie would’ve hated it too. Does anyone know if he truly had anything to do with the insignia, or was that just not-very-artistic license?
Next up is an A’s commercial:
Not bad, although it would’ve been better if they’d said “green stirrups and yellow sannies” instead of just “green socks.” The decline of stirrups can surely be traced back to small indignities such as this one.
But the real prize is a truly astonishing sequence starring Tom Paciorek, who was then with the White Sox. It’s hard to express how awful — and, hence, how awesome — this clip is, but it’s definitely one for the ages. Dig:
Whoa. You could write an entire Master’s thesis on all the unintentional brilliance in that segment. It’s like a 1970s porn movie without the sex (although sex was definitely in the air, at least judging by the way the interviewer kept gazing longingly at Paciorek).
I asked Kevin where this clip came from. Here’s his response:
I believe this was from an OnTV series called “Inside Baseball” from 1983. I was 10 years old and our family had just gotten our first VCR, so I taped just about everything sports-related. I think there were six episodes from this series. I still have all of them, but I haven’t viewed them in at least 20 years. They just kind of go through the season and touch on some baseball-realted topics. I remember that episode in particular because I’m a White Sox fan and Paciorek was my favorite player. So I always remembered that clip, and I finally pulled it out. I have no idea why Paciorek was targeted for that piece, except he was always a likable ballplayer, so maybe that’s why they chose him for the segment.
Kevin says he may have other uni-related material on his old tapes — hope so. But he’ll be hard-pressed to top that Paciorek clip.
FlapJackie Update: Yesterday I showed a photo of Jackie Hayes wearing a primitive helmet/earflap device. That led Phil to do a bit of digging. He came up with this article, in which Hayes says, “I was the first to wear a batting helmet. They let me wear it because of my eye.”
More intriguing, though, is this letters column from the July 1999 issue of Baseball Digest. One of the magazine’s readers asks, “When were batting helmets first used in the major leagues and when did they become mandatory? Also, when did ear flaps come into use, and are all players required to use them?” The response begins as follows: “Some sources credit Jackie Hayes, a White Sox second baseman who was blind in one eye, with wearing the first batting helmet in 1940. He fashioned a homemade helmet that also covered his ears.”
Good stuff there, but check out the rest of the response:
The New York Giants used a form of plastic helmets in a game against the Pirate on June 6, 1941.
Phil Rizzuto of the Yankees wore a full batting helmet in a major league game in 1951.
On September 15, 1952, the Pirates introduced full temple plastic helmets, with the entire team wearing them in the field and at bat.
Brooks Robinson is credited as the first major leaguer to wear an ear flap for protection.
In 1957, the National League required all players to wear protective headgear (cap liners rather than full helmets were sufficient). Current players who objected were not required to comply with the ruling.
In 1958, the American League followed suit. Ted Williams initially said he would not comply, but later relented by wearing a liner inside his cap.
In 1962, the A.L. ruled that inner linings were not enough and that helmets had to be worn. However, this rule was not enforced until the 1970s.
In 1971, Organized Baseball introduced a rule which required players at all levels to wear helmets, and minor league players to wear ear flaps. The ear flap rule was gradually extended to the major leagues.
Lots of interesting info there, but I’d say it raises more questions than it answers. For example:
• What is the “form of plastic helmets” that the Giants wore on 6/6/41?
• What is the date of 1951 game in which Rizzuto wore a helmet?
• Regarding the Pirates on 9/15/52, what exactly are “full temple plastic helmets”? For how many games (or months, or seasons) did they wear helmets in the field?
• I have never heard Brooks Robinson cited as the first earflapped player before. When did he wear a flap? Did it predate either Earl Battey’s improvised flap or Tony Gonzalez’s premolded flap?
And so on. We’ve touched on many of these issues before, but it’s interesting to see so many of them addressed in one place. Unfortunately, I suspect there’s a mix of fact and misinformation in the Baseball Digest account.
Meanwhile, remember this Tony Gonzalez photo from yesterday? Morris Levin found a newspaper account of Gonzalez being beaned on 4/16/64 and then, two months later, there’s our wire service photo. Cool!

Is it just me or is that one of the ugliest Super Bowl logos in a while? I mean, there’s just nothing that pops out at me or make me think, “Yeah, that Super Bowl is in Miami!” The last big game held there also wasn’t a very exciting logo either.

The socks that Rahaeem Brock is wearing are standard Reebok athletic socks. I’ve seen them for sale in a three-pack at Dick’s with two other pairs of striped blue socks. Also comes in a Red pack and a Green pack, maybe others as well.

While other sites are reporting Kentucky will have new uniforms for the Tennessee game, I would not have much faith at anything that comes off the site that was linked. I for one remember those Grizzlies uniforms, man they were ugly.

I don’t have the time right now to do any more searching for details, but will later.
My recollection of the Pirates’ helmets was that they were worn by all during the seasons Branch Rickey ran them.
They were cheaper (and safer) than caps, and supposedly he had an interest in the manufacturing concern.

I appreciate the kudos, but that’s some bad tv. The main host was an NBC sports guy named Byron Day. Sort of the Bill Patrick of his day. Jim Scott was just one of the “guys” working there producing and editing like the rest of us. He had aspirations of becoming on air talent. So did Sean Mooney, his co-host on some of those shows, who actually went on to have a career at the WWF and WOR-TV here in NYC. Seeing that brings back a flood of great memories.

I hope I am not coming off like a complete jerk, but shouldn’t we have expected a huge Super Bowl patch? It seems to get bigger year after year…to the point where I wouldn’t be completely surprised if they ultimately have “Super Bowl” jerseys with a team patch instead of the other way around.

Anyway, in BASEBALL IS A FUNNY GAME Joe Garagiola tells a story about them, relating to bullpen players often doing play-by-play to pass the time. The helmets that he and the other Pirates were wearing all the time come up.
“Tell me, do you think these helmets would be better if they had chlorophyll in them?”
“No, I think they’d be better if they had ballplayers in them.”
(The Pirates sucked—really sucked—at the time).

I remember when he played for the Sox in the mid-80s. He did virtually all of the commercials that advertised the upcoming promotional give-aways. It was usually him hamming it up in the clubhouse while shilling whatever was going to be passed out to attendees. One that stands out in my mind is him and another player (Steve Kemp? LaMarr Hoyt?) wearing windbreakers or rain jackets and acting like fashion models on a runway.
I also remember seeing some of his stuff from when he played for the Mariners.

Some background…
* Indians never wore a three-stripe red. Had only two navy stripes edged in white (vests, Sam McDowell era). Although, perhaps, there was one year early in double knit era when socks had three stripes, but players pulled them up so far was hard to tell.
* Never wore the red NW striped.
* Did wear navy with three stripes in late ’40s (Larry Doby/Satchel Paige teams). When striped navy returned from ’58 through about ’62 was only two stripes. Then in the “block hat C” era (Toby Harrah) the three stripes retuned. But, again, most players wore their socks so the stripes didn’t show.
Some cool stuff to have, that’s for sure.

I liked the Giants’ 1983 redesign, especially considering what that had been wearing. Bigass Helvetica-like numbers on the back, the black and orange piping. Loved it. But I enjoyed the move back to the more traditional uniform, too.
That Frank Robinson commercial, though, was pretty funny.
Regarding those wearing helmets in the field. I remember the Strane brothers always did it with the Alaska Goldpanners back in ’67. link

The premise of the Giant commercial is actually close to the story behind the A’s uniform change of 1982. If I recall correctly, Billy Martin hated the A’s uniforms. Specifically, the white shoes. He influenced the design to be exactly like the Tigers (Martin’s old team.) Including a change to black shoes.

And they did adopt that look for the home unis…but stuck with the white shoes.
Martin did, however, convince management to issue forest shoes–and gray unis—on the road. For a while anyway.

Robinson wasn’t the first. But because he played on the East Coast everyone thinks he was. The first was Earl Battey.

It’s about time the Emeralds got a new logo. It looks nice. And it’s nice to see that they went back to Green and Blue (getting rid of the gold), while also using the old script ‘E’. Hopefully the new uni’s are the same.

During batting practice, from under the bleachers, comes McDowell with the groundcrew’s hose, and starts drenching every fan he can reach. I think he received the grandest ovation of any New York Met to ever play in Chicago.
If memory serves me correctly BTW, I think that game was eventually postponed by rain!!!

I figured the E was going on the caps…just like the good old days. I understand why they are leaving Civic Stadium, but man, I really wish they weren’t. I love that place.
Favorite Civic memory: I was probably 8 or so, went to the stands above the Ems bullpen and asked a pitcher for a ball. He told me to go get him a hot dog, and he’d give me the ball. To not be noticed, I had to set the hot dog on an empty bleacher then walk away. He then came over, took the dog, and left a ball for me to come get. I have the ball in my display case now. :-)
2nd favorite Civic memory: I snuck under the chain link fence behind RF to look for balls in the bushes. Wandered too close to the playing field, an ump noticed, and the game was stopped until we got the F out of there. Talk about running while thinking you’re going to jail…

My Dad went to Colorado A&M in the 40s and I remember him once saying that Aggie teams wore green and orange. I thought it was just him being colorblind. I’ve got some of his old yearbooks, which I’ll check later. I kind of doubt there are color hoops pics inside, but it’s worth a look.

Some background…
* Indians never wore a three-stripe red. Had only two navy stripes edged in white (vests, Sam McDowell era). Although, perhaps, there was one year early in double knit era when socks had three stripes, but players pulled them up so far was hard to tell.
* Never wore the red NW striped.
* Did wear navy with three stripes in late ’40s (Larry Doby/Satchel Paige teams). When striped navy returned from ’58 through about ’62 was only two stripes. Then in the “block hat C” era (Toby Harrah) the three stripes retuned. But, again, most players wore their socks so the stripes didn’t show.
Some cool stuff to have, that’s for sure.

I loved going to Ems games in the early 1990s, but I think tying it into the University isn’t a bad idea. I never got the sense that anyone in Eugene found Autzen inconvenient, and it certainly seemed to us as students that Civic Stadium required a car to get to.

Arrrrgggh! I’d certainly check that but our STOOPID cable company decided they wouldn’t pay a new NHL tax this year so they are not showing the Fox Sports Midwest Blues games this year in my town. Adam Richman from “MAN VS FOOD” is doing a live show from the Super Bowl. He is currently eating a 48 oz SHULA steak wearing a “I’M STILL CALLING IT JOE ROBBIE” shirt.
Just turned on man vs food live and the host, Adam Richman, opened his coat to reveal a “I still call it Joe Robbie” shirt. No screen shot but it brought a smile to my face.

Only yearbook that was readily accessible was 1949. White uni with only numbers on the front, snug, no stripes. If I get this camerography straight, I’ll post some pix. Some here will like the BYU unis. I find them to be singularly nasty.

I think the Colts are going to win it (though I am rooting for the ‘Aints), and my choice of color vs color for the game would put the Saints in gold jerseys, and possibly an alternate black helmet.

If I remember correctly, the 1983-93 Giants uniforms was designed by the same people who later designed the 1985-90 Padres uniforms. I don’t recall that F Robby was involved. Remember that ad from 1983 with Chili Davis and Kupier well. Didn’t cover up the fact the team stunk like dead fish.
