Which Got Lower Ratings Yesterday, the Pro Bowl or the Pro Bowlers Tour?

Screen shot 2010-02-01 at 12.58.35 AM.png

While you were doing something comparatively productive with your life (like, say, taking a nap, or scratching your ass), readers Joshua Brisco and Aaron McHargue were actually paying attention to the Pro Bowl. When you’ve stopped laughing, take a look at some of the things they noticed:

• Tony Romo’s sleeves were flaring outward a bit. Why? Because he slit them at the armpits.

• Vince Young’s skullcap featured the old NFL logo.

• DeSean Jackson was doing the one eye black thing (which he apparently used to do back in college.

So there you have it: proof positive that wasting three-plus hours of your life can result in some marginally interesting material. But that’s nothing compared to what Jared Pike did: He attended the Pro Bowl! I didn’t have the heart to ask if he actually paid for the tickets, especially since he sent some interesting photos:

• “I had a blast uni-watching at the NFL Experience before the game,” says Jared. “This kid was at the ‘Kick a field goal’ booth. The tape was covering a Chad Pennington NOB.” That has to be one of the best fan modifications ever.

• “There were plenty of loyal (and accurate) Miami Dolphins fans in attendance, but a FNOB Dan Marino? Seriously? To distinguish him from the other Marinos?”

• “The Bethune Cookman College marching band, otherwise very good, spoiled their halftime show by forming a Michael Jackson figure grabbing his crotch.”

• “I know this will be your favorite: The gentleman in front of us had a Miami Dolphins yarmulke.”

Major thanks to Joshua, Aaron, and Jared for their valuable public service. I look forward to their extensive Olympic biathlon coverage.

Coming tomorrow: Some major uni-historical breakthroughs. Seriously.

ESPN reminder: In case you missed it, my ESPN column about my recent trip to the Twin Cities is available here, and I don’t mind saying I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. Enjoy.

Uni Watch News Ticker: As you may have heard by now, CBS has nixed a Super Bowl ad that showed a guy in a Packers jersey and a guy in a Vikings jersey making out. ”¦ What’s with the super-high uni number? It’s a guy from a radio station WSAI, which is 1360 on the AM dial (with thanks to Paul Wiederecht). ”¦ Mako Mameli sent along a bunch of screen shots from the 1991 AFC Championship Game, including Mark Kelso wearing the ProCap, a McNOB, the Bills’ kickoff specialist wearing two different brands of white shoes, Torin Dorn with two pairs of gloves, and some inconsistent NOB action. Coupla other things regarding that last link: First, for the image on the left, note that there’s no space between the period and “Davis.” And for the image on the left, note the large-ish American flag decal for Desert Storm — bigger than the ones used nowadays. Frankly, I thought the Desert Storm flags had been added for Super Bowl XXV and didn’t realize they were already in place during the playoffs. Anyone know if they had been added prior to the conference championship weekend? ”¦ New uniforms and logos for the single-A Wilmington Blue Rocks — including some totally bitchin’ striped stirrups (with thanks to Chris Ray). ”¦ Speaking of striped socks, how long has the Michigan State hoops team been wearing these vertically striped hose? (As noted by Nicklas Lane.) ”¦ Nice throwback for Xavier last Thursday (with thanks to Kevin Hastings). ”¦ Rob Perkey has found another catcher who wears his helmet brim facing forward: Robinzon Diaz. ”¦ New uniform set for the Chiba Lotte Marines (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Also from Jeremy: Here’s the logo for spring training games that the Dodgers will be playing in Taiwan. ”¦ If you go to the Life photo archives and search on the term “football dummies,” you get some pretty bizarre images. “Many of the dummies are listed as having been made by Marty Gilman of Gilman, Connecticut,” notes Lance Smith. “A quick Google search shows there’s still a firm called Gilman Gear that makes athletic equipment.” They’ll be getting a call from me shortly. ”¦ One of the best things about the NFC Championship Game was the big Sir Saint backdrops behind the goalposts at the Superdome. And now they’ve put Sir Saint on a cap. But jeez, ya think that NFL logo on the back is big enough? (With thanks to Terence Kearns.) ”¦ Love the little mascot uniform in this 1896 baseball team portrait (great find by Craig McGlone). ”¦ Good article about English Premier League sleeve badges here (with thanks to Timothy O’Malley). ”¦ Love the Sears sign in this 1953 photo. But what’s that Coke sign at left say? “Home of Atlanta Crackers” — that’s Ponce de Leon Park in Atlanta, where the Crackers and Black Crackers both played. Those photos are from the excellent Atlanta Time Machine site, which was pointed out to me by Blair Thompson. ”¦ Latest league to rip off Jerry Dior’s MLB logo concept: the Women’s National Volleyball Association (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Washington Huskies wore some BFBS alternates on Saturday. ”¦ Paul Brandt sang the national anthem at Saturday’s Flames/Oilers game while wearing a Flames jersey with a note instead of a uni number (thanks, Kek). ”¦ There are two notable aspects to this Sonny Jurgensen photo. The first one is obvious but don’t overlook the fact that the TV numbers are on the shoulders — unusual, because the mid-’60s Eagles wore northwestern-striped jerseys with TV numbers on the sleeves. Ricko says the Sonny shot is from an early-’60s preseason game, circa ’61 (here’s another photo from the same game, pre-jersey tear), but Tim Brulia says the Iggles wore this style for a few late-’50s regular season games, and that this design marked the first time a team put TV numbers on the shoulders. ”¦ Really interesting story about purple Lego pieces (great find by Matthew Edwards). ”¦ Unfortunately, I didn’t win this catalog, but I’m intrigued by a few of the photos in the auction listing, including these horrific softball uniforms and the very interesting basketball shorts shown at the top-left of this page. Never seen that circular bullseye insert before. Hey, Terry Proctor, what can you tell us about that style? ”¦ Terence Kearns found a site with some very cool soccer-themed T-shirts. ”¦ Alex Ozenberger reports that Miramar High in Florida has one of the weirdest hodgepodge uni designs ever — Flying Elvis on the chest, bizarre-o number font, Oregon-style diamondplate (which is reflective, natch), and vertically striped socks. ”¦ Typo alert: BYU’s Charles Abouo’s NOB was misspelled on Saturday. And yes, they were wearing pink for cancer awareness (with thanks to Christopher Jones). ”¦ Daniel Caceres recently purchased a Cowboys jersey with an odd mix of old and new NFL logos. ”¦ Tremendous video clip featuring a 1970 Browns/Bengals game here. Among many other details, check out the jacket being worn by the guy holding the down marker (awesome find by Brinke Guthrie). ”¦ More standout video goodness: highlights from the 1962 NBA All-star Game. That’s the introductory segment — see the right sidebar for links to the first half, third quarter, and fourth quarter. Note that No. 4 on the East squad appears to have been wearing a mask. Not positive who that was, but I think it was Dolph Schayes (big thanks to Charlie Panian). ”¦ While looking for something else, I came across this shot of Reggie McKenzie wearing glasses on the sidelines. ”¦ Also stumbled upon this shot of Johnny Unitas in his first Chargers practice, circa 1973. Love how Johnny U is still wearing his old black high-tops. Also, kinda funny that the Chargers’ practice shirt was a tee with the team’s helmet. ”¦ Small item on this page indicates that Nate Schierholtz, who has mostly batted bare-handed up until now, will go with batting gloves this season (as noted by Tremaine Eto). ”¦ John Sobotka was watching some old World Cup footage and noticed that the German goalkeeper in 1966 was wearing a newsboy’s cap. ”¦ Nice find by Philip Garza, who found this New England Pats bike on eBay. ”¦ One sport I neglected to check out while I was in Minnesota: iceball (with thanks to Eric Baukol). ”¦ Nick Hanson attended Saturday’s Florida Everblades game and noticed that goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu’s pants didn’t match those of his teammates. ”¦ The mighty Fleer Sticker Project scores again, this time with a gorgeous set of NFL helmet-themed Hormel trays. Amazing stuff. ”¦ Brinke Guthrie says he remembers seeing a late-’60s white rain poncho covered with all the then-current NFL team logos. “Key point: It had reflective aluminum-y material on the inside, so it reflected your body heat,” he says. Anyone know more? … Interesting story about how Joe Robbie is being prepped for the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl here.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember seeing the WVU football team wearing those same vertical socks as the Michigan State basketball team, but with a blue stripe, of course.

Damn Harry Potter ruining the integrity of Lego. When I was a kid, purple Legos did not exist, and we liked it that way.

Yes, the Pro Bowl is stupid.

    Yes, the uniforms sucked. Again.

But I almost want to convert to Judaism just for sports-themed yamulkes. Is that wrong? As an Angels fan, the whole halo thing is rife with possibility…

Kelso was also the last player on the Bills to keep the second stripe on his sleeve – everyone else had cut them after the first stripe.

In regards to the pic in the ticker about the goalie for the Florida Everglades, I saw the Everglades play the South Carolina Stingrays on New Year’s Eve in Charleston, SC, and I’m fairly certain the Everglades goalie had on those same pants then, but I can’t find a picture as of yet. In talking to a friend that works for the Stingrays, I found out that both goalies in that game had just been called up and been with their teams for less than 24 hours, so I guess he was still wearing the pants from his old team. But it seems weird that they don’t have the guy some new pants by now…..

The Bills and Dolphins both had American flags the week prior; a game that was played in the snow.

The vertical stripe socks are Nike socks. Every Nike teams wears them. The were debuted during last year’s NCAA Tournament. There’s only one vertical stripe in the back.

Re: Paul Brandt’s ENOB (Eighth Note on Back)

Heather Liscano is the Flames usual anthem singer, and her Jersey displays a similar note.

The purple Lego story immediately reminded me of Betty not being included in bottles of Flintstones vitamins for over 20 years. After what was apparently a huge grassroots campaign, and a Bayer telephone poll (not to mention a mildly successful Florida band called Betty’s Not a Vitamin), Barney’s main squeeze was added to the vitamin lineup in 1995, according to Wikipedia.

I own a Cleveland Browns blanket/most uncomfortable piece of crap ever with the aluminum-y material. I bought it on eBay and I remember it having information about NASA in it description. I will send a picture of it tonight. The best part is instead of using the Cleveland helmet they NFL went with the Cleveland Pixie…errrr… Elf.

Uh, that’s not a flag. It’s a white sticker with the NFL logo in the corner and black lettering on a white background. Or am I missing something? I guess it vaguely resembles a flag.

Anyone have a Super Bowl XLIV game program yet? I only ask because they will unveil next years logo in this issue. Any help would be awesome.

In other news, I will be in bed all day recovering from the major disappointment that was the Brewers Winter Warm Up yesterday. The only thing that was even remotely cool was having some of the old timers returning in their era-centric uniforms (love the pullovers):

Is the Cowboys Jersey legit…because it says on-field authenitic, but the sizing says XL, and authentics only come in numeric sizing, so if it’s a ripoff that might explain the mixing of NFL logos

The “on field” doesn’t really mean anything. I’ve got a Raiders AFL replica jersey purchased from NFLshop.com and it’s got the “on field” on the tags, and it’s sized in letters. It could easily be a replica made from an older stock of jerseys.

As one of the 4 of 5 people in the U.S. who actually watch the Pro Bowl (if one defines “watch” as “have on the TV in the background whilst doing something else”), I have concluded that the week before the Super Bowl is the best time to play it, if it must be played at all. I like this idea and hope the NFL will keep it this way.

    Gotta agree.
But no need to compel Colts and Saints players (this year) to attend. Let them stay focussed and, c’mon, does the NFL think the Super Bowl won’t get enough attention anyway?

As to best players not being in the game, so what. The game’s never been all too real, anyway. The Great Hawaiian Afterthought. Baseball’s ASG is only one with any on-field reality. Reggie’s mammoth HR in Detroit wasn’t hit off a pitch lobbed in there for him. And Torii Hunter didn’t loaf on his catch, either. Can bear down in baseball, because it’s a series of one-on-one confrontations (sometimes just between the player and the ball; pitched, hit or thrown), but not involving collisions.

What the NFL could do (and to my mind, SHOULD do) is use Pro Bowl Week to generate a football version of MLB’s Hot Stove League (or its Winter Meetings). And they sort of did. Lots of talk about who might retire, possible player movement, who needs what in the draft, how players looked in the Senior Bowl, etc., etc. That’s good, pot-stirring fun. And, frankly, saves us from reading and seeing endless fillers and sidebars about the Saints and Colts players’ wives, kids and dogs…or whatever.

You know, it’s funny… we look back at that logo and call it horrible, but had they decided to actually use it, we’d probably be calling it a classic right now. It wasn’t exactly radical at the time, and not all that different from the Bears, Giants, 49ers and Packers. I don’t think the tradition of a blank helmet in Cleveland had really been established yet. The CB logo appeared in the preseason in 1965 – the Browns blankness had only been unique for 2 seasons.

I asked this very same question for possibly another uni research project, and recieved a quick response that the team unanimously took of the decals before playing any games with the CB logo. Helmet Hut confirms this.

A lot of Nike teams wear those socks. I’ve been to several UConn games this year. They wear those Nike socks.

Ponce de Leon park has a football field on it but it runs down 1st base, wouldn’t it make more sense to be on the 3rd base line?

    re: Browns logo-ed helmets.

This post is from Feb, 2009 at ChrisCreamer’s site…

“According to the Browns, the ‘CB’ logo was developed before the ’65 Season. It was placed on the helmets but the players, coaches, etc. removed them before the first Preseason Game. It was rumored that they did see one game: A 1965 Preseason Game vs Green Bay in Cleveland, but photographic evidence shows that this is not true ”

Even if that stuff about “player opposition” is retro-fiction (and it may be) it also seems entirely possible that someone with the Browns looked around and said, ‘Y’know, we’re now the only team in EITHER league without a logo or graphic of some kind. Maybe that’s more unique than the ‘CB’…and since no one seems to really LOVE it…”

THAT I could believe. Much more than “the player’s hated it.” In 1965, the reaction to that would have been, “Who gives a shit; wear the goddamn logo.”

    So in short:

    NFL: Use this logo.
    Browns: No.
NFL: Please? It’s gonna be on all the stuff we sell
    Browns: No.
    NFL: …dammit

I wonder if there’s ever been any talk about a rejected logo curse. NFL Champions in 1964. Rejected logo pre-1965. Championship game loss in 1965…and then never making it to another championship game to this day.

There’s an error in your basic assumption. Wouldn’t have been an NFL decision back then, would have been the Browns’ call (things haven’t always been structured the way they are today). I meant the Browns would have told the players to wear the helmets they were issued.

If it were the NFL’s call, it would have showed up to match the trinkets n’ trash and those illustrations done for the 1965 “how to” books we’ve all seen.

However (slaps self across cheek), was going to AMEND MY PREVIOUS POST to say…

Wait a sec. Browns didn’t HAVE plain-sided helmets in seasons prior to ’65. They had those rounded black Charger-style TV numbers. So was more likely…

“Y’know, that brown ‘CB’ doesn’t look a whole helluva lot different from the numbers. And no one seems to love it. So maybe we should just go blank. We’d be the only team doing that. That’s probably more unique, a better trademark than slapping some nondescript ‘CB’ on there.”

That, to me, is still far more likely than some kind of “player revolt”, however informal.

The NFL Network may have outdrawn their own Pro Bowl telecast last night. Thats what they get for showing “Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders” for an hour and a half.

I know they had my household tuned in.

So playing the Pro Bowl a week before the Super Bowl didn’t help and playing it a week after doesn’t help…why not try playing the game on Super Bowl Sunday with an earlier start time maybe noon eastern. NFL fans watch hours upon hours of pre-game coverage Super Sunday anyway so it seems playing any kind of football during that time frame is a can’t miss.

Play the game at a separate site then the Super Bowl (perhaps a smaller college stadium in the same area as the Super Bowl so players in the Pro Bowl could attend the Super Bowl if they wanted). Make the crowd smaller to increase the intensity and even throw in some gimmcks, make it more about fun than a “football game”, bands and performances between quarters, let the players even participate the ultimate “look at me moment”, more of an experience than a game. The problem of players playing in the Super Bowl and thus not the Pro Bowl will still exist but again with every TV in America watching pre-game “analysis” for 8 hours prior to the game, it could only help ratings.

Obviously it wasn’t the NFL’s decision or it would have happened… but it still could have been their idea. If it was purely a team thing, why would there be so many things made in that era that used that logo? Especially items featuring all of the NFL teams.

…and assuming that The Helmet Project website is accurate, the numbers were gone in 1961, so they were blank for 4 seasons prior to the CB concept, and only unique in that aspect for 2 seasons, as 1963 was the first full season for the Steelers (and Raiders if we count the AFL and just refer to “pro football”) using a logo.

Dammit man, you’re the one who was alive back then, you’re supposed to know this stuff so we aren’t making guesses.

Well let’s throw in Generic ex-coach 2 and generic outspoken/marginal player 2!

“Dammit man, you’re the one who was alive back then, you’re supposed to know this stuff so we aren’t making guesses.”

That’s kind of my point. There never was a big deal about it. Never showed up in photos or stories in the weekly pubs (and I subscribed to the two biggest)…just on fan itemd and in a book with illustrations only, all prepared prior to the season. So it looked like they designed the logo—them, not the NFL, which would have been the case—filed the change with the league, but then just changed their minds…obviously fairly early-on because that other stuff had to have been produced well in advance.

And you’re right. I just checked. I was thinking they’d kept the helmet TVs once they started them, but they were gone for the ’64 title game, for sure

So I’ll stick to something akin to my last thought. The logo simply wasn’t striking enough. “That ‘CB’ kinda looks like we just went back to numbers…and the numbers look crooked, to boot. If it isn’t really working, let’s just lose the damn thing and make the simple orange helmet our trademark. Has been for years, anyway.”

We don’t know for sure that the NFL was driving the move towards a Cleveland Browns helmet logo, but we do know that it was designed by the League’s “Creative Services” division.

So it doesn’t seem terribly unlikely that the NFL was by this point starting to insert itself into the branding of teams.

They do the black helmet for the Saints a few years later, too?

Just saying, despite what it might seem, the league’s Properties and image mavens weren’t quite the driving force in 1965 that they are today. “Creative Services” may have designed the “CB”, but who initiated it, the league or the Browns? We may never know. But considering it never saw the light of day on a helmet, we can assume the Browns has some clout in the deal.

Just different back then. Teams had more…if not automony, then certainly more say-so.

Yeah, the Pro Bowl did pretty well on ESPN last night.

Safe Bet: Look For NFL Pro Bowl To Air Before Super Bowl Again In 2011

Based on early metered market numbers, last night’s Pro Bowl in Miami on ESPN the week before the Super Bowl averaged a 7.9 household rating. That’s up 39% versus last year’s 5.7 household rating on NBC when the game aired the week after the Super Bowl.

the mittens were tempting, but i wear the hat for the bowling league i “run” on thursday nights on the north side.

and it wasn’t turkey bowling on a frozen minnesota surface, like everything else you maniacs do up there. good golly you are a crazy bunch. actually i did turkey bowl once on the other side of the river from prairie du chien at some civic festival where there must have been a requirement that you had to finish a bottle of jack by noon. good times.

    I Can’t Confirm
I would have to say that this isn’t a real logo for a few reasons. Specifically, it doesn’t match up with the logos over the past years since the “in house” design process started. Specifically since Super Bowl XLI in 2007 and on. Look at the logos for those past games:
    link, link, <a href="link, link.

All 4 have a red and blue star with the red star representing the AFC and the blue, the NFC. This logo uses a white and red star.

The logo also uses the date “2.4.2011” – which is inconsistent with the format used since 2007. If they keep with the same format, the logo should read “02.04.11”.

Finally, the game IS being played in Arlington, however the games are now being referred to by the region they’re in rather than the city.

Super Bowl XLI – South Florida
    Super Bowl XLII – Arizona
Super Bowl XLIII – Tampa Bay
Super Bowl XLIV – South Florida

Super Bowl XLV is being hosted by North Texas, so the logo would reflect that.

There’s my argument that this is just a logo created by a fan or designer. I don’t think this is the real logo.

The 1st base orientation makes more use of covered stands (wild-ass somewhat logical guess).
That philosophy only works if you’re more interested in caring for your fans than in having a larger % of sellable seats available.

There may be more hiding, but what’s with the two light standards? Surely they wouldn’t provide enough light for the entire field! (it’s deja vu all over again)
I thought perhaps they put in some “temporary” bleachers directly across from the 1st base line. I know this was done in some major league baseball parks for football back in the day (griffith stadium comes to mind). Or maybe it’s the orientation of the sun or field drainage or proximity to bathrooms or who the hell knows?
    :)
that would work but even in that case it would make more sense to go down the other baseline, the field would just fit better. no running into the end walls (a la Wrigley for football).
Not sure if it’s a Home Depot, but it is definitely a shopping center now. Interestingly, the Magnolia tree that was once in play in center field (Eddie Matthews, Hank Aaron, and I believe the Mick all lodged HRs in its branches) remains unharmed. But please, don’t pronounce it like the explorer; it’s Ponce duh-lee-on when talking about the park or the road that is its namesame.

It’s gonna be tough to get Phil BACK in Minny, dontcha think?!

In regards to the different brand white cleats.

Kickers tend to use their own preferred soccer cleat to kick in. The cleat this kicker is wearing looks like a white version of the most popular kicking cleat, the Adidas Copa Mundial. Its a kangaroo-leather soccer cleat (no spike on the very front) that is very common still today.

What is interesting is that the adidas stripes were not whited out. I know this is the norm nowadays with paranoid sponsors (i.e. the Under Armour colleges of Maryland and South Carolina, whose kickers have worn Copa Mundials in the past, have made the kickers black out the stripes since its not Under Armour)

Sorry to endlessly prattle on about Ponce de Leon park and the football field layout but the question piqued my curiousity and so, after some googling:

It seems the only football played there was of the high school variety, albeit popular games, sometimes drawing 20,000 and apparently usually on friday nights.

I also came across this from the New Georgia Encyclopedia:
“The grandstand’s entire capacity was 9,800. The bleachers for the white fans, located in right field, accommodated 2,500, and the seats in left field, for African Americans, held the same number. With standing room for more than 6,000, the stadium could hold 20,000 fans.”

Is that because you’re a Cowboys fan (acceptable reason to disagree) or because you like the idea of the Superbowl logo being so close to the logo of the NFL team in the host city (I’d have to call you insane)?

/does anyone else think they’ll stop using roman numerals for Super Bowl 50? Superbowl L looks more like a typo than a legitimate name.
Great question! Let me be first to speculate the design (without having graphic arts programs at my disposal):

    Top Line (in small letters):
    Superbowl L
    Second line (in smaller letters):
    Celebrating
    Third line (huge numbers):
    50
fourth line (back to the small #s):
    Years of Championships

or they could just hold the game at Wrigley Field …

Sadly enough as soon as I posted it, I had a thought for a logo:

    S
    U
    P
    E
    R
    B O W L

Outline the whole thing in white, one word blue letters, one word red.
I would have to say that this isn’t a real logo for a few reasons. Specifically, it doesn’t match up with the logos over the past years since the “in house” design process started. Specifically since Super Bowl XLI in 2007 and on. Look at the logos for those past games:

But that doesn’t look like a “proposed” logo from the Indianapolic host committee, that looks like the committee’s logo. link

I would assume that, as long as they maintain the current naming patterns, the game in Indianapolis would use the word “Indiana” like Super Bowl XLII used “Arizona” instead of the city name. I would suspect the game in New Orleans in 2013 would be either “Louisiana” or “Gulf Coast”. That’s what I’ve heard, and what the local sports anchor (CBS affiliate) who broke the Favre signing in saying. He’s by far the most senior of the local sports anchors, extremely well-connected, and rarely goes for the “I got it first” story…which means he’s virtually never wrong when he does.

There’s a first time for everything, of course, and the other stations are falling all over themselves to say it isn’t true.

    —Ricko
The “Pro Bowl” has been a joke for wayyyyyyy too long. The post 1993 unis only enhance the unwatchability of the game.

I say, name a Probowl or Allstar team, pay them their bonuses, and and make the game (The “Future Stars” Bowl?) a Rookie & 2nd year Allstar game played the week and site of the Superbowl, or just do away with it altogether. Only allow players that have started 8 games or less to play in the game. I bet you more peple would watch for the chance to see the new guys than would watch to see this current insider fest, half-hearted joka of a “football game”.

It is now a different time and a different league. Wecan not expect the best players to play all out in a nothing Pro Bowl game now that the money involved for the player is soo great, and a team losing a great player to injury would kill their season(s) and salary structure.

At least with the Rookie/2nd year player game, you may get a real ballgame and also get to see some stars of the future.

    Just a thought.

    —Ricko
Also, it is amongst the crappiest helmet logos ever. The letter font used for the “CB” matches nothing else the team had ever done, and using the initials of the city and team in combination is usually a prescription for crappy.

Can you imagine NOS, or IC or MV on a hat. I’m sure it has been done by some ill-advised manufacterer, and I am even more certain that it loks crappy.

That’d work for me. Hell I’d rather watch a high school scrimmage over the 8 hours of pointless analysis. Hello, we’ve been watching all season, we know what each team is capable of, shut up and show something worth watching before the game.
WHAT!?? Generic Host, Generic Ex-Coach 1, Generic Ex-player/analyst, Generic Outspoken ex-player, Generic Longtime broadcaster/ex-coach/player no one remembers playing, and generic borderline comedian just don’t cut it for you? Well let’s throw in Generic ex-coach 2 and generic outspoken/marginal player 2!
I try not to even turn the game on until the player introductions. i at least try to leave the sound off. It is simply too, too much of a celebration of mediocrity of hype thing for me to even watch.

35 years ago, pre cable, you wanted to see the highlights and snippets of games that you really did not have access to. These days, by 11 pm in a given regular season game day, you will have seen all of the highlights 10 times each that in 1975 would have taken you until January 15 to see.

In the Pro Bowl, Aaron Rodgers made a touchdown pass to Steve Smith of the Giants, both wearing number 12. Does anyone have a screengrab of that? I think I saw them soon after the pass on TV doing a chest bump.

On the Patriot’s bicycle…a kid at my school had the same bike back in 1980 or so and was teased mercilessly. Keep in mind we were in Nebraska and he must have been the sole Pats fan within 1000 miles.
