Meet Brent Proulx, assistant equipment manager for the Minnesota Wild and all-around swell guy, who was nice enough to give me and Phil a behind-the-scenes tour after Saturday night’s Wild/Blue Jackets game. He’s proudly holding one of the jersey-themed laundry bags he designed for the team’s players — an excellent example of how he sees everything in uni-centric terms.
I didn’t take many photos during the tour, but here are a few tidbits:
• The Wild locker room has a rug that looks like a hockey rink (which frankly seems a bit too much like a 12-year-old’s bedroom to me, but whatever). The team crest at center ice is exposed on game days but covered at all other times.
• All of the Wild lockers have a little memorial decal for Sergei Zholtok, who died in 2004. There’s also a much larger tribute to him in an adjacent room, but I didn’t get a photo of that.
• I’m a total sucker for specialized measuring devices. If you can’t read all the type, here’s a much larger version.
• Here’s a small news item: If you look at this shot, you can see that the Wild have two different sets of green pants: the kelly-ish set with the stipe down the sides, which they wear with their home and road uniforms, and the slightly darker, hunter-ish set, which doesn’t have a stripe and is worn with the green alternate uni. Brent says they’ll be ditching the striped set next season and going with the hunter set full-time.
• I loved this skate blade shelving unit.
• Here’s the team’s stick room. As you can see, all the sticks are trimmed in Wild colors. But what about these sticks? Those are for players who’ll be participating in the Olympics — the sticks are rendered in their national colors.
• Here’s the thread for the sewing machine Brent uses to make jersey repairs. One spool for each team color (except for the blue spool — Brent told me what that was for, but I’ve already forgotten).
Brent, incidentally, is totally one of us. In addition to designing those laundry bags, he also designs the team’s locker nameplates, and his office was full of uniform tweaks he’d come up with and related ephemera. Uniforms aren’t just his job — they’re his passion. Meeting him was one of the highlights of my weekend.
I’ll have more to say about my Minnesota trip in today’s ESPN column — link coming soon. which has just been postponed until tomorrow.
Bosox Numerology: Bill Nowlin has just finished co-writing the forthcoming book Red Sox by the Numbers, and yesterday he posted something to the SABR listserv about some interesting anomalies he found along the way:
There was the time in 1955 when Frank Sullivan’s jersey was so drenched with perspiration that he put on several shirts in the course of one game. The third was one #9. And this during a game when [Ted] Williams was playing left field, so there were TWO players wearing #9 in the same
game. Frank and I pinned down the game as the August 28 game in Kansas City. Then there was the game in more recent times, in 2003, when Mike Cubbage simply put on one of fellow coach Ron Jackson’s shirts in error and didn’t realize it until after an inning or two.
Luis Tiant wore #23 most of the time, but there was one game in 1975 when Rogelio (Roger) Moret wore 23. Thieves had broken into the clubhouse and stolen some of the shirts, including Moret’s #29, so he wore one of Luis’s shirts.
Fascinating stuff, and a good reminder that things aren’t always so cut-and-dried as most of us would like to think.

Unfortunately, not one of the links in the Wild article is working on my computer. They’re leading to a 404 on uniwatchblog.com
Looking forward to seeing the pictures later on.
Paul, you might want to check the links on the Minnesota Wild stuff this morning, it looks like they’re trying to go to the Uni Watch Blog before going to Flickr.
Sorry, guys — now fixed.
That US snowboarding jacket looks pretty cool, I was waiting for something garish but that’s something I would buy… in fact I do need a new ski jacket.

It does look rediculous, but as far as airbrushing goes, it looks like a lot of effort was put into it. Perhaps I’m just used to baseball card airbrush jobs, but normally, they only tried to airbrush caps and collars, not whole jerseys (including folds and shadowing.)
just sayin
I have to get my son’s baseball pants high-cuffed. What is the proper length? Thanks!

brent was truly an awesome guy — AND he’s a fan of UW, so how great is that?
(thanks again to paul for including me in that tour, and to brent for the swag bag)
he’s completely committed to his job, and seemed extremely distraught at the wild fire…hard to imagine that happening, and his efforts to make sure the wild had all replacement gear and such after the fire were herculean
he’s also a huge twins fan and had in his office a bunch of twins new ballpark (and of course uni) pics and other materials
additionally, he recently became a dad, and had the obligatory pictures of his cute twins, which was a nice touch
if you’re reading brent, thanks again for the fantastic tour!

I’m confused about the Andre Dawson HOF cap story. I thought the players are allowed to select which team cap they want to be memorialized with and is thus the source of fun speculation. Is this not true?
link
The enshrinees to the HOF no longer have any say as to which cap they are wearing on their plaque; the HOF decides.

I wish I had the kind of time you guys have on this board; to be able to stare at a baseball card from 35 years ago, and tell that the helmet and jersey had been airbrushed, using CSI Tactics, and to then research that said player had been on the team for 3 years is unilaterally astonishing. NASA could use men like you! IF they were hiring… I mean my goodness…
Beating a dead horse Dept.
Ryan Zimmerman in the D.C. Sports Bog:
“…talking about the time he and Dunn wore those Natinals jerseys onto the field.
“We had no idea,” he said. “I mean, we don’t pay attention to that stuff. We just put the jersey on. I think Dunn got a hit or I scored a run or something, and they came out and asked for our jerseys, and we’re like, ‘What the heck?’ We were like, ‘Sweet, we must have done something cool.’ They told us after the game that they were spelled wrong. I guess it was just another thing for people to poke fun at us. But that’s ok, we’ll come back on ’em.” “
So…let’s all the baseball fans here ponder this:
If Gore-Tex can be made to look like distressed denim
(see last item in Ticker)…
why can’t double knit be made to look like gray flannel?
Just, y’know, asking.

My understanding is when Wade Boggs was picked to go into the HOF, he wanted to go in a Tampa Bay Devil Rays cap because he was from Tampa. Considering he spent only a couple of years there and the Devil Rays were an expansion team, the HOF committee said no and had him go in in a Red Sox cap. Since then, the committee had said what cap players go in. So thank Wade Boggs for Andre Dawson not being able to go in as a Cub.

Or like the Hall spokesman said – statistics.
I know this is completely off-topic, but after going through the blog, Page 2 & the web, doing uniform research project on the White Sox, they wore the shorts 3 times in 1976, Game 1 August 8th, against the Orioles between August 20th-22nd, and a 3rd time against? Or was it against the Royals twice? Did we ever figure out the 3rd team/time?

I thought Boggs was given a financially incentive to wear a Devil Rays cap, like $1M to $1.3 million. I remember being annoyed by that back in the day. Like Gary Carter, Dawson had his biggest fame on another team but his best totaling years came on the Expos. Dawson’s ’87 season was an artificially inflated fluke because it basically doubled his career averages because of the rabbit ball year.

No worries on that slapshot merch, if the ECHL chiefs were to move or fold, that stuff would still be available. It’s not as if the franchise owns the rights to that or makes any money off it (hell, if they did, they wouldn’t be in financial dire straits all the time!)
It’s actually my experience that aside from an occasional game in the jerseys worn in the movie and a few autograph signings from the Hansons, the team really seems like it’s gone out of its way to distance itself from the movie. I think they should embrace it. I’m not saying the on-ice product should be all “aggressive hockey is back in town” but there should be more homage to the film in the arena. I think they were putting together a lounge with photos and memorabilia from the movie but I don’t think it opened yet (it was to be in the former pro shop)
In related events, I say a guy with a Syracuse Bulldogs Ogie Oglethorp jersey at the last Pens’ game I went to, but alas, it was NOB.

They talked about it during the East-West Shrine games (there was and EWU player in the game) that they had to get a waiver from the NCAA and the conference to put the red field in. The have got both waivers in hand.

I didn’t say it — JimWa said it
Boggs allegedly did have a clause in his contract with Tampa that would pay him if he elected to wear a Rays cap in the HOF. However, the Hall got wind of this and changed the rule so that players could no longer have unilateral control over the cap on their plaque. Boggs wasn’t elected to the HOF until 2 years AFTER the rule change, so he wore a Red Sox cap based on the decision of the Hall.

A breaking news story was just heard on NPR regarding bears and their habit of defecating in large wooded areas!
Boo. I like the wild’s striped pants, especially considering their home/away sweaters don’t have any hem striping. The home sweaters are going to have the footie-pajama unitard look.
Actually the wild’s center stripe (minnesota wheat) is discolored on most of the pants so it doesn’t properly match the number/nameplate colors. The pants should still have striping.
Roger Moret was kind of a string bean. It seems like a Tiant jersey would have fit him like a tent. Of course, jerseys were quite a bit more form-fitting in 1975 . . .

Meh. All in all, I’d call it a step in the right direction. At least the link now.
Their home jerseys are red and they wear red socks with them. That’s enough of a contrast with the solid green that you don’t necessarily need pants/hem stripes. The road sweaters do have hem striping (as you can see in that pic above).

Red turf, huh?
Could be worse, I suppose. I just have two comments:
1) I hope EWU doesn’t wear all-red unis. I don’t like Boise State’s new all-blues for many reasons, including the fact that they’re hard to see on the blue field. All you green monochrome schools, same thing – break up the color scheme on your unis.
2) Is the turf fade resistant? If not, in a few years they’re going to have a pink field. Great for breast cancer awareness month – otherwise, not so much.

I’ve read about concerns over high temps in Vancouver leading up to the Olympics. If it’s too warm, is this event going to turn into a waterboarding contest???
I clicked on the link for the Reds promo, and all I got was that it was sold out and there were no pics of hats.
Interest comments about which cap Andre Dawson will have on his plaque, and which one he prefers. I saw that Catfish Hunter couldn’t decide between the Yankees and A’s, so he has a logo-free cap.
Maybe it’s because I will never be in the Hall of Fame, but it seems to me that Andre Dawson is just whining. I mean, you finally achieve your sport’s highest honor, and you spend your time moping because your preferred cap logo isn’t on your plaque? Really?
To me, Andre Dawson will always be an Expo, Carlton Fisk will always be a Red Sox, Bruce Sutter a Cardinal … Andre, just be grateful for the honor.
not sure how many Colts fans we have on here… but here is their new Anthem. Indy’s own hip hop group the Mudkids made it. They also had a song for the last super bowl. link

Besides, he does have a point. Since there is some question as to which cap is appropriate, shouldn’t his feelings at least be factored into the decision?

My understanding is when Wade Boggs was picked to go into the HOF, he wanted to go in a Tampa Bay Devil Rays cap because he was from Tampa. Considering he spent only a couple of years there and the Devil Rays were an expansion team, the HOF committee said no and had him go in in a Red Sox cap. Yep, that was it – Boggs sold his HOF plaque cap logo like so much advertising space. The Hall took exception to the sale, so they took the choice away from the players. If Dawson is unhappy about the choice, it’s Boggs he ought to talk to.
I seem to recall that there was another player about the same time who did the same thing, really pushed the Hall over the edge.

No particular fan of Wade Boggs, although I did own a “Don’t trade Wade for gettin’laid” t-shirt back in the day. In his defense though, I always thought that it was Dave Winfield that offered his HOF cap to the highest bidder among teams he had played for, prompting the Hall to take the choice away from the player. I also seem to remember that Gary Carter wanted to do the same thing and was pissed that Winfield ruined it for him.

There was a rumor that Winfield offered his cap logo to the Yankees for $1 million, but it was roundly denied at the time. Personally, I’d tend to doubt it – seems unlikely that, if Winfield put it up for auction, the Padres would end up as the highest bidder.
If it wasn’t for that link to the Reds cap promo, I would have never found the following:
The Reds are having Irish Heritage Night on June 25th vs the Indians. Sounds like the Reds might bring back their green jerseys, but doesn’t anyone else find it odd to schedule this when the indians are in town?
It is German Heritage Night on September 10th vs the Pirates. Will we see jerseys with Rottöne on them?
And finally, October 2nd is Hispanic Heritage Day vs the Brewers. I hope we have “Rojos” and not “los Reds”…

The Brewers have amended their description of the 1990s retro uniforms:
July 23 — Brewers to wear reproductions of the home 1997-99 uniforms, featuring “BREWERS” in block letters on the front, while the cap features an “M” logo.
The original press release made mention of the “MB” logo, which was worn by the team from 1994-96. Glad they’ve corrected it.

I posted links to a few photos awhile ago, but I was browsing through the Life archives and noticed they’ve expanded the set on the Great Lake Naval Station baseball team.
There are now about 74 photos available under Great Lakes Baseball and they’re dated May 1942. William C. Shrout is credited as the photographer.

Good inside look at the Wild locker room. So good of Brent to do that.
A couple years ago my brother and I took our parents to the Canadian Rockies and we stayed in Calgary and then Edmonton. We went inside the Rexall Center and luckily got a great tour by one of the guys there that was part of Oiler organization. The playoffs were going on at that time so we could not go into the Oilers lockeroom. But the guy let us sit on the Oilers bench and other cool parts of the arena.

I dvred a couple of Home Run Derby shows from ESPN Classic. Mostly because I saw Dick Stuart was in them. Stuart was against Wally Post in one and Frank Robinson in the other. I vaguely remember that show when I was a kid. I have seen some of them here in the past few years too.
What a fun show to watch these days. The amount of money they can win and hearing the small talk between innings.
And seems like the neighbor hood kids should have been out in force to get the home runs hit to the houses or yards.
Dick Stuart was one of my favorite Pirates as a kid. One funny line was how Stuart said the best part of the show was how he did not have to bring his glove. His nickname at the time was Dr Strangeglove. Since He was not baseball’s best fielder. I will never forget in one of the old Pirate yearbooks seeing how Dick Stuart hit 66 homeruns in the minor leagues.
Not sure anybody has seen The Way it Was series now on ESPN Classic. I have been dvring those too. Next week maybe Monday or Tuesday they will have the Harvard beats Yale 29-29 episode.
They recently had the 60 world series with Pirates and Yankees too

It’s probably less of a problem than I think it could be, but along the lines of monochromatic uniforms matching the turf (all blues on blue turf at BSU, all red on red turf at Eastern Washigton…) I’d think a red field and a brown football might be a bit blurry as well. Then again, they probably don’t play on tv much…

I used to care a lot about the HOF. Thinking it was the best one in sports, held to the highest standard. Then the past few years happened, yuppie sportswriters stuffing the ballot, fringe players getting in. And once Blyleven gets in, that’s it. Might as well put Bonds, Clemens, Palmeiro, A-Rod and every other Top 20 player to ever play the game because it just doesn’t matter anymore. With Dawson bitching about his cap, it’s all a popularity contest & money maker now.

a little too ironic…i really do think
More ironic than iconic, which probably is the opposite of what they had in mind.
Still say they shoulda gone with “Blizzard”.
(Although a big skating snowflake would be even dumber, I suppose).

Even found a tough-looking one, ’cause that’s what the kids like these days: link
I’m not sure where to post this, but the picture towards the bottom of this page (before the comments) shows Chris Johnson wearing an interesting Titans uniform. The numbers on the back of his jersey are Titans blue with a white outling, where, as seen in Kyle Vandenbosch’s jersey, the number i usually white with a light blue outline.

What’s wrong with the snowflake?

Research request: Can anyone supply me with any pictures of the San Jose Sharks at the Cow Palace? Specifically crowd-inclusive shots?

That Rusty Staub card is the most magnificently ugly thing.
When I collected cards as a kid, those were the cards I treasured the most. The ugly. The mistakes. The just plain wrong.

Big John Daly keeps slimming down, and still keeps puttin’ on the sweet LoudMouth pants. Today’s choice at Torrey Pines = Zebra:

I also like the Painter-style cap. Don’t know what he has going on with his bracelets though. Maybe they will provide a close up later. I am pretty sure it’s a “grip it and rib it” thing though.

I am sorry to keep going with Daly like this… but I love his collar sponsor:

It reminds me of Tin Cup.
I am glad his g/f still matches Big John:

Note the pinkness of the ball in the photo of Malcolm Armstead that I didn’t caption because I was at work until 2:30 this morning.
That Rusty Staub card reminded me of the Topps sets of that era, of which virtually all were shot at either Shea Stadium or at the West Palm Beach, FL stadium of the Braves/Expos- renowned for its “flesh-colored” seats.
