Monday Morning Uni Watch

photo.jpg

Have the Vikings switched to real 3-D horns on their helmets? Kinda looked that way yesterday, but it was actually a loose decal on Chad Greenway’s lid. (Screen shots courtesy of Phil, Jeff Czuba, John Beckwith, and Jason Mattina.)

That was the most notable moment in a relatively uni-uneventful NFL weekend. Among the other tidbits:

• Doug Keklak noticed that Neil Rackers was wearing his wedding band while kicking. No screen shot, but you can clearly see he was wearing it a week earlier in the game against Green Bay, and also in the regular season finale.

• I want to make it clear that I am not suggesting that the Cardinals switch to a black helmet, but there’s no denying that their logo looks really good outlined in white on a black background.

• Spike Lee was wearing Jets gear, but not at the Jets/Chargers game. He was in New Orleans, attending the Saints/Cards game. Kinda weird to show up in another team’s attire, no?

• Ray Rice began Saturday night’s game wearing some serious war paint (thanks to Brett Talley for the screen shot), but it was mostly gone by the fourth quarter.

• Speaking of Rice, a while back I mentioned that the Ravens had come up with a new practice jersey patch, but I hadn’t seen a photo of it until I stumbled across this shot.

• I know we’ve covered this before, but what’s the deal with the initial on the ball? I think it’s the ref’s initial after he checks and approves the ball prior to the game — right?

• Gretchen Wilson sang the national anthem before the Colts/Ravens game while wearing a T-shirt with the old NFL logo.

• Here’s something I’m fairly certain I’ve never seen before: Andrew Bartsch notes that each of the Metrodome end zones yesterday had a separate, distinct end line. Is that standard Metrodome procedure? Has anyone ever seen this on any other gridiron?

• Matt Shervin attended the Jets/Chargers game and noted that the team logo banners at Qualcomm still show the old Lions logo. (Either way, those are some gorgeous banners, no? Never seen those before.)

And now we can look forward to both conference championship games being played in domes. Sigh…..

Candela Update: Last summer, when the Candela Structures exhibit at the City Reliquary came down, I promised everyone that a virtual/digital version of the exhibit would soon be available. Okay, so “soon” turned out to be a little inaccurate, but the deed is finally done: All the content from the exhibit is now available on the Candela Structures site.

There’s also a small line of Candela merch and a Candela Structures Facebook page, whoop-whoop.

Now let’s just hope the structures survive the winter.

Uni Watch News Ticker: For those of you who enjoyed last week’s ESPN column about Todd Asselin’s helmet design, here’s the entire 40-second video clip from which those screen shots were taken. Can’t use NFL video in ESPN articles, but no problem linking to it here. ”¦ The NBA All-Star Game jerseys are now circulating, which means I can show you these photos I took in the NBA offices last fall. ”¦ Entertaining breakdown of very odd stadiums here (with thanks to Jason Goede). ”¦ Illinois high schools with slightly illegal uniforms (wrong color trim, numbers too small, etc.) can now apply for a waiver (with thanks to Seth Engelbrecht). ”¦ Several readers have pointed me toward these carved baseball bats — amazing stuff. ”¦ Here’s something you don’t often see: an Arnold Palmer Masters caddy uniform up for auction. ”¦ If you’ve been looking for 16 Angels logo patches, here’s just the thing for you. ”¦ In case you missed it in Phil’s post on Saturday, the new MLB BP caps are out, and holy shit are they atrocious. Larger photos, if you dare, here. And as Phil correctly noted, the back view is the icing on the turd cake. ”¦ Meanwhile, several readers have been asking me if this is what the new BP jerseys are gonna look like. My understanding is that the BP jerseys are not changing this season, so I’m not sure what that Reds design is. Anyway, all the BP stuff is crap anyway, so who really cares? ”¦ New World Cup kits for Uruguay and Switzerland (with thanks to Michael Orr. ”¦ New logo for the Euroleague (basketball) Final Four (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Also from Jeremy: New soccer uniforms for the J-League teams Omiya Ardija, Tochigi SC, Fagiano Okayama, Yokohama F-Marinos, Consadole Sapporo, United Chiba, and Roasso Kumamoto. ”¦ Hey, all you weekend “Guess the Scoreboard” warriors, check out this note from Chris Flinn: “Funny episode of King of Queens was on TBS the other day. Kevin James runs onto the field after trying to get a foul ball for his father-in-law. Interesting scoreboard shot — it’s a day game, but the clock shows 9:19, and several of the other games are already final. Any idea if this is a real scoreboard shot, or is everything a mockup? The Mets lineup looks real — Henderson, Alfonso, Olerud, Piazza, etc.” Okay, scoreboard savants, get crackin’. ”¦ Brutal shot of the Kings’ old two-tone purple/black uniforms here (blame Mike Engle). ”¦ Ticker item of the day, as far as I’m concerned: Spirts of St. Louis blank checks! (Awesome find by Ben Traxel.) ”¦ Robert Marshall was in St. Looey a few months back. While he was there, he hooked up with reader Marty Hick, who invited Robert to join him for a round of croquet. That’s Robert in the center and Marty at far-right. Lots more photos here. ”¦ Andrew Peters suffered a doozy of a jersey tear during a fight with David Koci the other night. ”¦ Pens goalie Alexander Pechurski made his NHL debut on Saturday night, wearing a very plain, generic-looking mask. Additional info from Doug Keklak: “Although he wore No. 40, his usual number is 70 and they mentioned how equipment manager Dana Heinze tried to get him a 70 jersey but it got caught up in customs.Heinze tried to peel back the 4 and put on a 7, but it just wouldn’t work. Also, ice-level reporter Dan Potash also brought up something interesting: Pechurski’s name was spelled wrong. It really ends in y but the Pens saw it listed with an i.” ”¦ Lots of info about Rick DiPietro’s new mask here (with thanks to John Muir). ”¦ Johnny Griswold‘s PuckDrawn blog is running an Anaheim Ducks rebranding contest. ”¦ Bit of a typo on the NHL Network the other night (as noted by Matthew Hiett). ”¦ Interesting feature on Manhattan doorman uniforms here. ”¦ Pitt unveiled a gold alternate uni on Saturday. ”¦ Whoa, serious color-on-color alert. That’s Pepperdine vs. University of San Francisco from Saturday night (with thanks to Jim McCue). ”¦ Saw Sweetgrass last night. Has nothing to do with uniforms, sports, design, or anything else we usually discuss here, but holy shit is it beautiful. Highly recommended. ”¦ “I attended the Kings/Bruins game on Saturday and saw that Daniel Paille had one of his skate tongues flopped down, while the other skate had the tongue tucked under the shin-pad,” writes Alex Kinkopf. “Going tongues-out is awesome, but I’ve NEVER seen this style.” ”¦ “I was watching the Red Wings play the Blackhawks on Suday when this commercial came on,” says Joe Lubinski. “The long pants are reminiscent of Cooperalls, no?” Indeed. ”¦ RIP, Mr. Country.

Not directly uni-related, but since many readers of this blog are also interested in football history, wanted to give a heads-up that Showtime is currently airing a great documentary “Harvard Beats Yale 29-29”, which looks back at the 1968 game (and a lot more).

    link

    Well worth watching.

IIRC those logo banners at Jack Murphy originated at Super Bowl XXXII in ’98 (they may have since added ones for the new Browns and the Texans).

I’m sure you like the King of Queens bit in the ticker, but for most of us once is enough.

So I dunno how to link to fridays comments, but I said something like, I kinda like the dbacks bp hat but they will probably have a some stupid crap on the back. Guess I was correct.

Re: the Vikings helmet horn issue. I noted it during the game, considered notifying UniWatch, but then said to myself, “I bet that a dozen guys are rushing to their computers to do this very thing.” I bet that I was not alone in that thinking.

    Oops — thanks. Now fixed.

The game in the mystery scoreboard was played on September 8th, 1999 — the Mets had #29 as their pitcher and the only guy wearing that number that year for the Mets was Octavio Dotel. He pitched against San Fran on 9/8/99. It was a day game, too. I don’t know why the 9 a.m., though. I think the games that were Final were completed the night before.

I didn’t catch any screen grabs, and I can’t find pics of it today, but Bernard Berrian started the game with gold shoes, but the 2nd half he switched to black.

That old NFL-logo shirt Wilson was wearing is currently on clearance at Old Navy, complete with the “vintage” screen-print look… somebody’s intern must’ve been scrambling at the last minute.

Didn’t Qualcomm also have banners for all the MLB teams?

    Paul,

The initial on the ball is one of the referees’ marks. When I was in college I was a ball boy and before every game the officials have to check each ball and approve them. I saw a variety of marks from a cross to letters to hearts to three dots.

Notre Dame broke out the green on Saturday night in the women’s game, and, yup, they lost, as they have in men’s basketball and football the last few times they’ve worn green.

yup, that’d be the one :-)

Ovie wearing the “A” in this commercial, now wears the “C”. Just sayin..

Great feature about the weird stadia.

“Spike Lee was wearing Jets gear, but not at the Jets/Chargers game. He was in New Orleans, attending the Saints/Cards game. Kinda weird to show up in another team’s attire, no?”

No, he was just doing what Spike Lee always does — showing up as a bandwagon rider at some place that suddenly seems like it’s the in place to be. Where was he in 2003 when the Saints were 8-8 and weren’t even a blip on anyone’s radar screen? I didn’t see him (or Brad Pitt, for that matter) in New Orleans. I can assure you of that because I was there in ’03.

Ok, I’m obviously WAY late on this, cuz I’ve seen many examples of NFL players now wearing the war paint. Yet, I thought this was banned by the NFL; i.e. the Vikings John Randle war paint scenario? Are they skating around this by applying it differently, at the beginning of the game, then letting it re-shape to war paint face throughout the game?

    link

I’ve never watched King of Queens, but is it possible the episode was taped the morning after the actual game Wes deteremined from #7 above? So the players numbers etc. were just kept from the night before but no one thought to “correct” the clock and it is showing the actual time…

I’m sure the Pens’ goalie will have his mask painted in short order.

Usually when you see the plain white mask it’s either a rookie or a goalie traded from another team and his old mask design has been painted over in white or had white tape placed over it like Flyers goalie Michael Leighton.

Oh, and thanks UniWatch for the Ducks Rebranding contest shout-out.

Three River Stadium used to have banners similiar to the ones at Qualcomm

    link

Sorry only picture I could find. As you can see they used team helmets on the banners. They had similar banners during baseball season. There were more banners on the other sides of the Stadium

Uniwatchers, I was wondering if you guys could help out Zack Hample on a few questions he has regarding Forbes Field, as well as the uniforms from the movie Roommates. See the link below:

I think the initial on the ball since it’s an “L” may stand for which side the laces should go on when the refs spot the ball. Since thats how the ball would be situated for a left handed center.

LOL. However, in his defense, Brad Pitt wasn’t living in New Orleans in 2003 because at that point he hadn’t gone insane and left Jennifer Aniston.

Nice to see the Saints in the title game.

I think that is more likely: it might be a way to keep track of the multiple balls used during a game. As far as “left” for a lefthanded center (if you were serious) a football is symmetrical, so that wouldn’t make any difference. It also gets manipulated quite a bit before the snap, so I don’t think it is placed down with any orientation in mind (except facing the end zones, of course).

As a former goalie who painted his own Jacques Plante model mask back in the 70’s, I’m tired of these ultra-detailed, professionally-airbrushed goalie masks. I wouldn’t mind seeing the occasional all-white mask or a mask with a simpler graphic design.

I’ve seen the extra line a couple of times at the Metrodome this year, and maybe earlier in the past. If you take a close look at the photos, you can tell the two different versions of the white. The one is on the warning track for baseball, and then the other is on the turf. I don’t know why they left the line of green, but I speculate it has something to do with the turf maintenance.

Centers (more often long snappers) can request that the umpire place the ball down a certain way to ensure that the player does not illegally manipulate the ball pre-snap. Centers can slightly roll the ball (turn it) for comfort and grip, but the ball can never be lifted completely off the ground (which can be tough for a long snapper if the laces are up) or moved an inordinate distance, or forward or back.

(Note: these are the rules from the NCAA that I’m familiar with, the NFL rules may vary, but in this case I don’t think there would be a large change)

Shoot, now I gotta find a pic of my old mask I painted back in the day – pacific blue (a/k/a teal) with SEALS in white with yellow trim, as per the California Golden Seals 74-76 colors. I’ll post it tomorrow.

    RE: The Reebok hockey jerseys

Forgot to mention that I got to talk to a couple players from one of the schools in our conference that have the new Reebok jerseys this year. Talked to three players (obviously not a big sample) they all said they loved the new material, it was noticeably lighter and cooler, but that the “cuffs” on the sleeves blew. As far as the new socks go, one loved them, two were indifferent. The two that disliked them said they just “felt different” while the one that liked them said he could tell they were lighter and liked the feel.

Except he won’t have a painted mask in the NHL anytime soon. Pechurskiy is back with the Tri-City Americans. He was on a one-day amateur tryout contract because the Penguins had no backup goalie on their roadtrip after both Fleury and Johnson were hurt.

In NCAA, the back judge is usually in charge of inspecting the balls prior to the game. I’ve seen guys do all sorts of things but usually it’s their initials or some letter on the stripe in black sharpie.

Whenever I ask them what prevents someone from taking their own sharpie and marking up an “unapproved” ball the same way, I’m usually met with blank stares.

    Two possibilities:

(1)The episode was shot at 9:00am or so but whoever set-up the scoreboard neglected to re-set the clock.

(2)The clock could not be re-set and they figured no one in the future would analyze that segment like the Zapruder film. (Such is the fervor of the Uniwatch Universe.)

Which leads to two more scenarios:

    1. Scoreboards in 1999 had a snapshot function, and the info was simply “copy and pasted” from the previous night.

    2. If the scores/details had to be set up manually, why take the time to do it right?

    3. (bonus scenario) This scene was actually filmed on 9/7/98, one year before. The scoreboard guy who just put random numbers on the board just happened to put info that would match stats for exactly one year later. The next week, he bought a lotto ticket – and didn’t even get one stinkin’ number right.

Actually the scores and lineups on the “TV” scoreboard line up for the NIGHT before, Sept. 7, 1999. The Mets used eight pitchers that night – Reed (#39), Maholm (#23), Taylor (#26), Cook (#27), Wendell (#99), Tam (#38) and McElroy (#34).

At Northwood University it was pretty much a trust system. We would drop off the game balls to the officials around 9am. They would chose the 7 they wanted to use and mark them. They would then carry the balls out to the field with them where we would meet up again to discuss how those officials wanted us (the ball boys) to interact with them during the game (Some will ask if they missed a call, some want us to retrieve bean bags, some want us as out of site as possible). Nearly every time when they handed us the game balls they would say something like “ok, we’ve marked them, you’re game officials they are now your responsibility.

Then we would divvy up the balls 2 on the visitors side and 3 on the home side with one in play and one in the bag.

Speaking of cheating. When I was at SVSU, we were in the NAIA (as were Northwood and Hillsdale at the time). The rest of the conference was NCAA II. In softball the GLIAC used Wilson softball and the NAIA used Dudley’s. In the fourth or fifth inning of a game when the ball was all scuffed up and a foul ball would go out of play we would toss a scuffed up Dudley into play.

Not trying to get political here- but one of the criticisms down here in New Orleans about Spike’s recent work is that he’s a New Yorker with no understanding of New Orleans making documentaries about what (he thinks) went down and is going down in New Orleans.

While I understand its just a uniform, he subtly re-enforced that notion this weekend.

Look up “Trouble the Water” for starters.

Hopefully this isn’t going way off topic now, but I think it is uni-related because of the “what it means to wear a team’s uniform” discussion- which is valid (I hope) to this thread.

Not everything Spike does is bad, and he’s not 100% uninformed. However, wearing the Jets uni just re-enforced a characteristic many see in him. Sort of a dumb PR move.

Hmmm, just realized we have the NFL’s only one-color-and-white teams in the AFC game.

And the Jets’ unis originally were designed as largely a green-and-white version of the Colts’…because Weeb Ewbank had been hired to coach them. Including, in that first year as the “Jets”, a single green stripe on the helmet (with the green aircraft logo).

If Spike Lee had worn a Saints jersey you’d be calling him a bandwagon-jumper, so I don’t see how he can win, unless he did the unprecedented & wore normal clothes.

It’s the same way that we ask our MLB uniform designs to be clean, plain, and consistent, yet get our panties all ruffled when other leagues set up a (audible gasp) template to ensure consistency amongst their teams.

    We’re consistent(ly inconsistent).

    ‘sota gathering:

i don’t know if anybody clicked on the “box cover” shot that paul posted today, but one thing i enjoy doing when it comes to playing a game or whatnot is take the olde school box cover shot. you know, the one where they have the kids playing with whatever toy, and they are having waaaaay more fun, or at least it appears more exciting, then when you played with the toy. that is what i did with the croquet set. wouldn’t you buy that set if you had the choice betwixt sets? the participants are having sooo much fun, look at the drama as he sets up his winning shot.

link is another example of a box cover i did for an my first ever table hockey game i made from the ground up(10ish years ago). i cut the players out of steel for the o6 teams, and then applied the illos i made of actual 50’s mid 60’s players. yada yada. anyway, to commemorate the finish of the game i had some friends and co~workers over, and we had a tourney. my brother has his hand in the air, and the painter who turned me on to uniwatch int he first place a few years ago is at the far left. yada yada. it was good times even though i(toronto) came in third.

okay, now to my point. on top of other shots that i would love to have the opportunity to set up this weekend, i really want to make a “box cover” for uniwatch:the home game. what would that entail? i have some ideas, but a good box cover shot also needs right proper participation/ad~libbing by the people in the shot. so if you are going to be in the sota, and want to be a part of the shot, start practicing your exaggerated excited/horrified looks that someone might use in a home version of the watch in the mirror.

here is something to think about…never break the 4th wall! the clown at right in the shot i posted above refused to do that, think of how much better it would have been had he played along right proper. i also ruined that one because i couldn’t stop laughing at people screaming, but it was the best one of everyone else, so i used it anyway. but stay in character, you have to have commitment to a bit. there is a person not actively participating in link tool. again, there was no commitment to the bit, no good.

that’s it, just something for you to ponder ahead of time if you are going to the gathering, and want to participate.

Because if you’re brave/dumb enough to stand in front a 22-calibre bullet, you can do pretty much whatever you want.

it is the character of the man, not his look that makes him who he is.

Not only will both championship games be played indoors, but the entire NFC tilt this playoff season has been as well. For that matter, each of the NFC division champions played in an enclosed/enclosable stadium, with only the wild card winners playing outdoors.

As for Spike Lee, his real role in uni history is that he’s responsible for New Era making fashion team caps in non-team colors. Spike asked for a red Yankees cap years ago, wore it to a game and was shown on teevee, and the rest is very bad baseball cap history. So the next time you see someone in a lime green Tigers cap or a yellow Twins cap, blame Spike.

However it’s done, whether I win or not, this is pretty darn cool and I thank Mr. Skiba and Mr. Lukas. Pretty nifty if I do say so.
Eddie Haskel mode: ON

I’d like to echo T Clark’s fine words and add that Misters Lukas and Hecken run a fine, fine blog, in fact one that I visit countless times daily.

    Eddie Haskel mode: OFF. ;)

That NFL shirt Gretchen is filling out has been on sale at Old Navy since last summer and also available at Junk Food Clothing. Its retro/vintage so they’re using the old shield logo.

…speaking of link, this is from Nov. 2008 vs. the Bears. Then here’s a shot from nearly a month earlier in 2008 at a link – hard to tell, but the extra stripe is there too. However, in September 2008 here’s a shot from the link of the regular season against the Lions (the same seats at the Bears game). Is that normal to change the turf during the regular season? Hmm…

… Bit of a typo on the NHL Network the other night (as noted by Matthew Hiett). …

… Ticker item of the day, as far as I’m concerned: Spirts of St. Louis blank checks! (Awesome find by Ben Traxel.) …

So that’s where the missing “i” from Spirts went!

Holy plastic grass batman! It just hit me – the Twins were still playing for the Lions game, hence the two different sets of end zone stripes.

Ask Connelly and Bernard about me being on Facebook. LOL!

The czabecast was always on czabe.com and they are committed to doing them each day. I also download the 980 stuff from the sports reporters with him and Andy Poulin but it\’s just not the same.

You can also subscribe through their youtube channel link and get the daily czabecast that way too.

The subliminal commercial for the pre-Intel processors for Macs?

True story: My parents refused to buy me Battleship cuz they thought it was a waste of money. “It’s just a grid,” my father said. “You can draw it up on graph paper.” The next day, sure enough, he came home with some graph paper and showed me how to draw the Battleship grid. That’s what happens when your parents are Jews who were raised during the Depression — a double-whammy of thrift.

Naturally, I thought the graph paper was a poor substitute for bright-colored plastic. My friends felt similarly, only more so, when I tried to convince them to play the graph paper version with me.

To this day, Battleship is sort of a charged topic for me. On the one hand, I admire my parents for seeing thru the plastic trappings and finding the essence of a game that’s nothing more than an X axis and a Y axis; on the other hand, this story perfectly encapsulates how they managed to take all the bright-colored plastic fun out of almost every situation, literally and figuratively.

C’mon Secretery Gates. One of the reasons it’s cool to be in the military is being able to wear sweats to work. Now you’re telling these guys that they have to get shot at AND wear ties?
