Been a while since anyone has submitted any childhood uni drawings, so I was happy to get a communiqué from Aaron Staenberg, as follows:
My parents were going through some of my old stuff and found the notebook where my friend Joe Lynch and I kept our primitive uniform drawings. We had gotten into team names and uniforms and such when we were growing up. While we were in high school, we decided to create the RFL (Royal Football League). There was nothing very royal about it, other than a fancy name for our fancy made-up league. We made divisions and the whole deal, and then we went and made some logos and uniforms and helmets for the teams.
Some of designs were not very original or creative, but some were somewhat prophetic. We made a team called the Louisiana Voodoo, which was later an arena league team. We made a team called the Utah Rattlers, which had a color scheme and logo resembling the first Arizona Diamondbacks logo that would come a few years later. We made a team called the California Condors, with a helmet that resembled the Eagles throwback helmets that came out years later. And we had a team called the Seattle Lumberjacks and tried to create our own plaid pattern — very ugly, but somewhat catchy and definitely original.
I love some of Aaron’s details, like the little jock tags on every jersey illustration, and the fact that some of the helmets had little uni number decals while others had the helmet number spread out around the center stripe. And a few of his jersey concepts were plenty innovative. Want to see more of his childhood designs? Look here.
Good news, bad news: The good news is that 13 membership kits mailed out two days ago (including Mike Kelly’s Hartford Whalers treatment, shown at right), and we have another dozen or so in the pipeline that should mail out by the middle of next week.
The bad news is that I can no longer use PayPal. Extraordinarily frustrating, but what’s done is done — let’s move on. Those of you who signed up via PayPal yesterday, don’t worry, your orders have been received and processed.
In a perfect world, there would be PayPaul. Until then, I’ll have to choose a new e-payment system. I’m leaning toward Amazon Payments, which works pretty much like PayPal and should be very easy for everyone because most of you already have Amazon accounts (if you already have a credit card registered with them, you’re good to go; if you don’t, it’s easy to set one up). I hope to announce the new system on Monday. Meanwhile, if any of you have feedback to offer about this or other PayPal alternatives, I’m all ears.

What’s that patch on his jersey? As Chris Bruggeman notes, it’s the 1990-91 All-Star patch — a nice touch.

Why would the minor league Mudcats get their shorts bunched-up because a community college team has the same nickname? Stupid. If you use their ‘logic’, then the Carolina Panthers should have sued the Florida Panthers, and the Chicago Bears should have gone after the Baylor Bears, and on and on. Spoon River should not have backed down and just let the courts throw the case out.

100% agree. I think its sad the reason they had to back down was because they couldn’t afford the legal battle. And I’ll tell ya this, that team from Carolina just did more damage to their image than some community college from Spoon River ever could.

I’ve heard Pat Foley (Blackhawks TV play-by-play guy) refer to them as “the Oil” as well.

As someone who works in the community college venue, I can tell you money is tight and that it is probably cheaper for them to just change their name and buy new uniforms that to try to fight a prolonged court battle over it.
I am FULLY on board with all of changes that the above-referenced blog recommended for the Indians uniforms. I love the block “C” and block “Cleveland” on the road unis. Looks great!I think the whole PC debate over Chief Wahoo has always obscured any rational discussion about the uniforms. Per the blog’s recommendation, put him on the sleeve (or don’t, for that matter).

OK, glad to hear it from somewhere else because no one i’ve talked to today heard of it.
Also, are there any other arenas set up like Northlands…er, Rexall, that have the player benches at the bottom of the screen and the penalty box at the top (as you’re watching left to right on your radio dial, well, not really!).
I don’t see too many games from Edmonton and that just stuck out as being different. Normally, when I’m watching a game, I notice the line changes happening at the top of the screen.

There are thousands of collegiate, amateur and professional sports teams out there. I don’t think even the most creative of people could come up with an original, intelligent, cool-sounding nickname for each one. A little overlap is inevitable.
As long as it’s not in the same league (and even then, I didn’t mind the CFL’s Roughriders/Rough Riders situation years ago), who cares if you have the same nickname?
If I didn’t have projects already lined up, I’d be tempted to DIY a Spoon River Mudcats shirt.

OK, I really don’t care one way or the other about the band, but since Kiss is in the ticker, I’ve got a “uni-related” observation about them.
The two “hired guns” they have playing drums and guitar do not have their own characters. link dresses as the Catman and link is the Spaceman. They even wear the same damn “masks” that link and link did, respectively. I think this is incredibly lame.

I agree. It’s stupid that a minor league team is going after a community college for copyright infringment(?) or the like and sadly the cc has to back down without a fight. Obviously yes it will be cheaper to buy new uniforms/rebrand than fighting a legal battle and the cc is doing whats most sensible. But still like Hank said, a minor league team (not known outside the market) going after a commnunity college halfway across the country?

I’m trying to recall if there were any Herman’s stores in the Chicago area. I’m thinking that there were because I definitely remember them, but I don’t know if that was just because I saw their commercials during Mets games on WOR or something.
I used to work with the guy who came up with that hermans logo. I never really liked the capital H and lowercase letters all the same height, although I decided it was best that I not voice my opinion to him.

HERMAN’S! I remember going to Westmoreland Mall, eating at chickfila (which was more of a novelty back then), get an orange julius and then go down to the corner of the mall that store was in and just get lost. I bought one of those ceramic bats easton made for awhile there.
That mall also had a Koenigs (where I got my first CCM Pens jersey) and another sports store, can’t think of the name of it, but I think it had someone’s name in the title. Mostly sold hats, but had other stuff too.

It’s not the first time the Carolina Mudcats have fought for their identity. In 2000, there was a team known as the Feather River Mudcats playing in Marysville, Calif. in the independent Western Baseball League. I’m not sure how this would work with the throwbacks this year, but alts can be worn once in the preseason, twice during the regular season and once in the postseason.

Ritcher and Buoniconti’s were fastened with what seemed to be belted shoulder pad straps as opposed to chinstrap.

I still think the over the ear piping/color was dumber than this new version, although these are pretty close. Thankfully, the Marlins were link so it wasn’t as noticeable as link.
As for these new ones, I like the ones that are a bit different than the usual game hats (Cleveland, Astros).

It is actually pretty cool. They are having a couple of alumni games a JV and a varsity game. The story on the local news said it is the 75th year they have met and they are donating the proceeds back to the park and the players donated time cleaning up the park last fall.

Curt Gowdy is more low key than any regular season game that happens today. the refs have big ROSE BOWL banners plastered on their backs (and are trowing red flags). the field isn’t even in that good a shape – and no one seems to care. no sideline reporter either. the game is simple, the unis are simple. this is heaven.

Mets BP cap = Bad? Affirmative. Not sure what to make of the Yankees, Detroit and Tampa having two different ones though. Yankees = Evil empire sales volume.
