This 1964 Champion catalog is the latest addition to my uniform catalog library, and it’s a beauty. Let’s take a look-see, shall we?
• Coupla interesting things on this page, beginning with the unusual contrasting cap-sleeve panels on No. 36. Also love that No. 26 has “NW Sleeve Stripes,” because of course anyone reading this catalog would know that those are northwestern stripes.
• Note that the crotch extension shown on this page is referred to as a “leotard attachment.”
• As usual, my favorite page is the one with the hosiery listings. Also, I love that the belt is “specially designed to fit through tunnel loops in football pants.” Yeah, that sure looks like a special design, no question.
• Don’t think I’ve ever come across a catalog with so many white sock options. Totally digging that Ortho Sock logo, natch — no wonder it was the rave of athletic coaches across the nation!
• The white tee with the colored sleeves on this page is interesting. “Teams can be organized by colors by turning shirt inside out.” Maybe shirts vs. skins was too racy for 1964.
• The style shown on the left still works for me — such a classic look for track and field.
• Lots of interesting stuff on this page. First and foremost, “Mr. Leisure” — how great is that? I’ll take a dozen of that jacket, please. Secondly, I had no idea there was ever such a thing as “swim supporters.” How did these differ from standard jockstraps? Are they still used today? Meanwhile, how did the baseball undershirts get buried on this page? With no illustrations?!
• Can’t get enough of the lace-up soccer jersey style.
• Just most of the other catalogs I’ve acquired lately, this one has a listing for target sox. Nice of them to show them in my favorite color combo.
• As usual, the few women in the catalog are depicted as being disturbingly thin. Love the term “tumbling suit,” though, along with the bloomer insert on the far-right listing.
• There’s no photography in this catalog, except on this page. Must’ve been a carry-over from a previous year’s catalog. In any case, those jacket stripes are pretty sweet.
• And here’s the back cover.
(Special “thanks” to Mike Hersh for driving up the price on this one by bidding against me, even though he already had a copy of it. “I was going for a dupe,” he says. Sigh. Some people”¦.)
Important News: I’m happy to announce a new logo design contest — and this time there’s a monetary prize for the winner, so hopefully we won’t be devaluing design too much.
Here’s the deal: Most of you probably know about the Cape Cod Baseball League, which is a summer league for college players. There’s a similar circuit in New York State — the New York Collegiate Baseball League — and this year they’ll have a new team: the Cooperstown Hawkeyes. The team name refers to a key character in The Last of the Mohicans, which was written by Cooperstown namesake James Fenimore Cooper.
The team is owned by Cooperstown attorney Tom Hickey, who has agreed to have a Uni Watch reader design the team’s logo. There’s an interview with him here, so you can learn more about him and what he has in mind for the team.
So here’s the contest:
• Design a primary team logo. No caps, no jerseys — just a logo.
• Deadline: Friday, January 29th. That’s three weeks from tomorrow.
• Prize: $300 for the winner.
• How to enter: You can e-mail your submissions to me at the usual Uni Watch address. One entry per person.
Obviously, there’s a lot to work with here — Cooperstown/baseball history, literary history, Native American history, etc. I’m expecting big things from you people, so get crackin’.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of logo contests, NASA allowed employees to submit their patch designs for the final space shuttle mission. The 15 finalists are shown here (with thanks to Daniel Caceres). ”¦ Big news for MLS fans, as the you can see lots of new uni designs in this leaked PDF. ”¦ Just what the world needs: swooshified eye black. ”¦ No, wait, this is what the world needs: a sponsored stadium demolition. ”¦ Actually, what the world really needs is sponsored weather alerts (with thanks to Aaron McHargue. ”¦ Terry Paffenroth was looking at some footage from the 1979 NFC Championship Game and spotted someone on the Tampa Bay sideline wearing a very cool-looking T-shirt. Anyone know more about that logo? ”¦ Here’s a rare sight: Derek Jeter wearing stirrups. That’s from spring training, 1994 (nice find by Steve King). ”¦ Yesterday I asked what the Dodgers were wearing in this shot — a prototype design, or repurposed L.A. Angels uniforms? Scott Turner has confirmed that they were indeed Angels jerseys. ”¦ Mike Edgerly notes that several Aussie soccer players have been wearing three-digit numbers. What’s that all about? ”¦ Here’s something you rarely see anymore: a high school hoops jersey with nothing but a uni number on the front (with thanks to Josh Holman). ”¦ NFL cleats are supposed to be at least 51% white or black. Apparently Eric Wright and Nike never got the memo (with thanks to Brendon Yarian). ”¦ Remember the photo of the UPI teletype machine that I ran with yesterday’s blog entry? Scott Stoddard has an identical machine in his home office. “I worked at a small newspaper in the Pacific Northwest back in the ’90s and it was sitting in a storeroom,” he says. “No one objected when I asked if I could take it home. It used to make that teletype-waiting-to-print humming noise when plugged in, but it’s been moved so many times over the last 20 years that it now doesn’t do anything.” I’m officially jealous. ”¦ Actually, wait, it turns out one of those machines is up for bid! I’m all over it, so hands off. ”¦ Nice 1982 shot of the Longhorns wearing the Cotton Bowl logo on their helmets here (with thanks to John Romero). ”¦ The Boston College hockey team will wear special jerseys for tomorrow’s game against BU, which is being played at Fenway Park. Photo gallery here — note the little baseball diamond on the back. ”¦ New uniforms for the San Jose Giants. “An interesting side note on this is a discussion on how the SF Giants might be using the uniforms to put a stamp on San Jose as the war between the A’s and Giants and a possible A’s move has heated up a bit this offseason,” says Kevin Cunningham. ”¦ Here are the pads Henrik Lundqvist will be wearing when he plays for Sweden in the Olympics (with thanks to Matt Harris). ”¦ A CMU player somehow ended up going NNOB last night. “The announcers couldnt even call his name — they kept calling him #37,” says Michael Kinney. ”¦ New uniforms for the Doosan Bears — that’s a Korean team (with thanks to Dan Kurtz, who has a site devoted to the Korean Baseball Organization). ”¦ The Cavs wore their throwbacks last night. ”¦ Puma has created a special “biodiversity kit” for African soccer teams. Details here (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm).
Both the womens and mens college games at Fenway tomorrow will be carried by the NHL Network and NESN.
The guy on the back of your magazine has a green and white jacket with a University of Florida seal on the left breast. The illustrators must have been lazy schmucks.
the HS jersey with just a number….isn’t exactly so. there is Navy lettering on the navy jersey, not exactly sure why, but southeast starting wearing those last year and i’ve seen them in person..navy on navy
The CMU player was originally #22, Agnew. He ripped his jersey early in the game, so went with NNOB, #37 as replacement/blood jersey
I am confused to how any knowledgeable person, in the linked article on Cooperstown, could refer to college summer baseball as “minor league”. Minor leagues are pro and semi-pro baseball and summer amateur leagues are played by, well, amateurs. These leagues are formally represented by the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball. They may be low “minor league” quality and include many future pros but it is amateur baseball.
Mike Edgerly notes that several Aussie soccer players have been wearing three-digit numbers. What’s that all about?
In the AFC Asian Cup Qualifying, the AFC has chosen to make the tracking of players very easy. Each player has an individual number for each country. In the past players would only wear the 1-18 numbers or 1-23 numbers. However, if players would have the same name in romanization, but were actually different people it would cause problems in the implementation of yellow or red card suspensions.
In the past the qualification was usually before and after the World Cup, so you would have really high numbers after the World Cup. I can remember seeing Japanese players in the #70s in the starting lineup in the qualification for the last tournament.
I am guessing that the Australians have used this qualification tournament to get their younger players international match experience while keeping their best players on their club teams because of Australia’s superiority in the region. Hence the high numbers.
Reversable T shirts were preferable to “skins.” Which was a result from not enough space in too many gym teacher’s closets…

Henceforth the #22 on his helmet. I noticed the same thing while watching the game. (Which was a corker of a game, too.)
On the MyKBO site, they have a link for the new KIA Tigers mascot logo. Transforming tigers, anyone?

WVU went black for black’s sake vs Rutgers last night. Most Mountaineer fans I talked to just don’t Get It. They’re too in love with Huggins to realize it’s not right. Doesn’t matter that black has been a school color since exactly never.
The resulting runaway win won’t help matters.
Here is the look at all the script, logo, etc. for Doosan.

I think that it is a downgrade from the previous logo and uniform set.

WOW! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! That MLS catalogue is fantastic. My favorite is the Columbus Crew black shirt with yellow pinstripes. I will deffo have one of those before the year is out. I have already informed Mrs Gunny that this year my birthday will involve a trip to Crew Stadium for a match. I can’t wait!!! Thanks again for that link.
The Flyers must not have sold enough Winter Classic jerseys before the Jan. 1 game as they wore them at home last night against Toronto (white jerseys at home BTW). Sort of bogus if you ask me. They were special for the special outdoor game, not to be diluted by wearing it for the first home game after the Winter Classic. Come on Comcast Spectacor, pretty lame.
I love how the catalog states that the biggest jersey available is a size 46. Either the sizes are scaled differently now or everyone was puny; I was wearing a 52 in high school.
The name on the reversible shirt “Gar-Field” is an actual school in Prince William County, VA, a suburb of DC.

Some info can be found here about the hyphenation of the name:

BTW, their nickname is Indians, so the shirts/skins debate is apropos on a pun level.
Boomer Esiason was talking on his WFAN (NY) radio show this morning about wearing other player’s jerseys. He says he wouldnt wear a current players jersey, but would wear a retired player’s jersey. He also is waiting for the Rangers to give him a Rod Gilbert sweater. I guess Jason Bay gets special treatment! Interesting stuff…

Detroit wore their winter classic uniforms at home last year after the Winter Classic so the home fans could see them.
So not Alan Alda for the Hawkeyes’ logo?

I now wish to be referred to as “Mr. Leisure.”
Playoff…
I am so for the playoff system in college.
I went to Youngstown State where I was an equipment manager and our first National title we got into the playoff-not a very high seed and ended up winning the whole show. The rings are really cool-based on one of Oklahoma’s title rings. The football players at Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma etc. Are supposed to be the best of the best conditioned players. Why can what was 1AA do it every week (most of those kids are not going pro-Jeff Wilkins was only guy who went pro from our teams) so….it just makes sense to have a playoff.

Could you tell me what a “semi-pro” baseball team is? Either you’re a professional, as minor leagues are, or you’re an amateur, as colleges and collegiate summer leagues are.
Pittsburgh based link on whether Bert Blyleven should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. I voted that he should be selected oh, I laughed at the T-Shirt he shown wearing as well. I loved those 1979 Pirates.
Ah-HA! The catalog reminds you young’ns that for decades and decades SOP for football was crew socks over stirrup socks (if high socks were part of the uni). Hasn’t “always” been one-piece, pro-style socks with the crew sock “built-in”.
It also explains why, for those of us with that timeframe reference, the low white socks preferred by those such as the unfortunately thick-calved/ankled Mr. Powers* doesn’t always compute.
It looks like…
A) You or you team didn’t have the budget for new crew socks so you’re wearing old ones where the elastic is shot, and they’re flopping around your ankles, or…
B) You borrowed a pair of anklets from a cheerleader.
Just sayin’. ; )

Sanis are dust magnets. Especially once you work up a sweat. It’s one of the reasons they fell out of popularity. If you like ’em clean you get, at best, to use a pair twice.

I think those Cavs unis were more “fauxbacks” than throwbacks. Their colors were royal blue and orange back in the 80’s.

As amalgams go, last night’s Cavs was a good one.
And I was once again reminded that no team in the NBA, NHL or MLB (or even the late Arena league or the CFL) has team colors of maroon/burgundy and athletic gold.
Too bad. Someone sure could “own” a look.
Rays would have made a great candidate, but for they’d be accused of being “too Florida State”.
Or the D-Backs when they abandoned the purple. But that likely would been “too Arizona State”.

My thinking is that a “professional” team is a full-time commitment, i.e., the players play and prepare full-time for baseball and get paid accordingly. Players on “amateur” teams do not get paid at all. “Semi-pro” players are those who get paid for playing baseball, but do not play full-time, i.e., have other, non-team jobs that provide the significant part of their incomes.
The Flyers jerseys from last night had the Winter Classic patches on them still.
That Boston College jersey is actually quite attractive. At least they didn’t muck it up with modern swooshes and swashes. Could be the lighting, but it appears that the number on the back is a different shade of burgundy than the jersey striping??

Sometimes semi-pro status is put there even if not every player is paid but if you play competition against players that are being paid.
I used to do website/writing work for a team in Pittsburgh known as Allegheny Valley Baseball. They referred to themselves as semipro, yet only a select few players were paid. However, they scheduled themselves against some teams with players that were paid and were in unlimited age type leagues.
But the description of pro vs. semi-pro having to do with full vs. part time status is an excellent parallel. Even the teams that paid players that played against AVB were played per game stipends but nothing you could survive on.

Re: the Bucs t-shirt logo. In 1979, the Bucs “worst to first” team was fueled by a terrific defense. This being the era of named defenses — the Purple People Eaters, the Doomsday-D and the Orange Crush in Denver, the locals tried to desperately name the Bucs defense, without much success. But many locals came up with variations of meaner looking Buccaneers (to counteract the effeminate Bucco Bruce) and this t-shirt was one of the many that came out for the Bucs defense (probably not NFL licensed).
The photo is blurry, but I think the shirt is being worn by reserve nose guard Dave Logan — he went on be a starter and a local broadcaster who tragically died in his early 40’s a few years ago.

Unless there’s a special section for those who made it in the first time they were eligible that I’m not aware of, either a player is good enough to get in or he isn’t.

I can’t get it to load up, either. On one of the Chicago Fire message boards, a poster has noted that the catalog was sent to stores several months ago, and that modifications to these uniforms and apparel might have been made since then.
Hey, maybe there’s term?
“Throwbacks” should be as accurate historically as possible, allowing for undated technology and construction.
Then there are “fauxbacks” and “harkbacks” and “vintage-inspired”.
And there’s modern, but with elements of previous unis (last night Cavs, for ex.) which we could call an “Echo”.

they get off on the power they wield
the franchise, who holds the record for the highest percentage of “first ballot” votes…got 98.84%, second was the express with 98.79%
would ANYONE argue either of those two are MORE worthy than the sultan, whose ballot was marked by a mere 95.15% of those voting?
it’s bullshit to NOT put someone on your ballot in his first year of eligiblity…either the guy is a HOFer or not
but that’s the drama the BBWA can build and they feed off themselves…
not that i have a better solution for inducting members, but these guys with their almost century old ‘criteria’ are really anachronistic nowadays…even in the beginning, but especially now
but either a guy is a HOFer or he’s not…this “first ballot” bullshit makes no sense

I don’t agree with the first ballot stuff either, just reporting what I heard. Don’t shoot the messenger.
I was reading a book on the history of U of MN Gophers football I got for Christmas, and noticed the following note:
Minnesota would not comply with Big Ten “recommendations” for players to wear numerals in 1914. By 1921 the Big Ten “urged” that they be used. Coach Williams did not want his players to be identified and so put four-digit numbers on them to be unreadable.
I had never heard anything like this. Have any of you? Almost sounds apocryphal, but who knows?
Here’s a link to a review of the book, which includes mention of of the above factoid. Highly recommended reading for Gophers fans, by the way. Worth the price just for the illustrations.

I don’t have a UPI teletype machine, but I have something that sounds like it. When I graduated from college in ’92, my sister gave me some money which I used to buy a word processor. It has a screen like a computer, it loads paper like a typewriter and it prints like a teletype. I actually used it to write high school football articles about fifteen years ago, which I would fax to the editor. My how times have changed. The machine still works, though.
No luck for me on the MLS page. Perhaps someone in three stripes got wind of a popular uniform-based blog posting it?

How about this: If a player receives 97% or more of the vote (first, second, or tenth time around), all voters who did NOT for that player immediately lose their ability to vote for future HOF ballots.
If you are willing to declare that Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, Jr., Ty Cobb, George Brett, Hank Aaron, or Tony Gwynn don’t deserve to be in the HOF, you don’t deserve a vote next time around.

You are correct on all counts, Ken. That is the late David Logan, a rookie on the 1979 team, who had a good career on the field but was miscast as a TV sportscaster later in life.
And that – if memory serves – is one of many knockoff “unofficial” t-shirts that cropped up that year (after the infamous “Go For 0” t-shirt that showed a pirate ship sinking that was hot when the team was 0-26 or the “Throw McKay in the Bay” t-shirt from around the same time).
And “Orange Crush” would have been the perfect name for that unit, if Denver didn’t already have that moniker. The Buc defense had plenty of personalities, but no one catchy identity. Oh, well.
In other Buc news, link. If you grew up in Tampa – as I did – you saw so much of Lamar Sparkman’s work in the pages of the Tampa Tribune in addition to seeing it on the Bucs’ helmets every weekend in the fall.

Good sentiment. Unfortunately, the BBWAA is a tight-fisted, exclusionary group. There are HOF voters – and BBWAA lifetime badge holders – who haven’t covered a baseball game in years. But they’re not going to relinquish their absolute control of the process – including their right to make petty or stupid votes (two people voted for Eric Karros!) – anytime soon.

The one thing about the BBHOF, they’ve done a better job of keeping the roster to the very best than the other halls of fame. The debates around baseball are almost invariably about qualified players who are left out, not about unqualified players getting in.
You raise a good point about the way the media votes. All else being equal, a guy like Gary Carter has a way better chance of getting in because of his personality and his schmooze skills than a guy like Jack Morris. That doesn’t seem right to me.

And many, many years ago, the AFL’s first step toward acceptance began when Alabama’s Joe Namath, wearing Puma soccer shoes to keep from catching a longer football cleat and further damaging his soon-to-be-famous bad knees, lit up the Orange Bowl on national TV…against, yes, Texas.
It was, quite honestly, the night his “star power” (which Jets owner and entertainment mogul Sonny Werblin recognized and coveted) really took hold nationally. And made him the prize catch for the AFL.
For uni geeks, it marked the first national discussion of soccer shoes as viable for football…plus Joe Willie had ’em so covered with white training tape that announcers did–and still mistakenly do–sometimes speak of him wearing “white shoes” that night.
One other aspect: The top WR for Texas in the game was George Sauer, Jr., who would join Namath with the Jets and have a standout performance in SB III…and we all know what THAT game meant to pro football history.

Regarding the Springfield Southeast jerseys, the above commenter is correct. The jerseys do say “Spartans” but for reasons unknown, the lettering is navy. The overall look is decidedly old-school.

This being the era of named defenses — the Purple People Eaters, the Doomsday-D and the Orange Crush in Denver, the locals tried to desperately name the Bucs defense, without much success. But many locals came up with variations of meaner looking Buccaneers (to counteract the effeminate Bucco Bruce) and this t-shirt was one of the many that came out for the Bucs defense (probably not NFL licensed)..
The Bucs never did come up with a catchy name for their great defenses anchored by Lee Roy Selmon — ironically though, the “Tampa 2” became iconic after the Dungy-Kiffin defenses became so good from 1996-2008, but that is more to the scheme than to the team itself.
The passing of the man who gave us Bucco Bruce, our Country\’s first openly gay mascot (winking, earing, with a curious-llong sword in his mouth), probably deserves a whole column from Paul. His obit suggests that his first submission to the team was too scary/mean, so he submitted more of an Erol Flynn type, which I had never heard. Ironic, because the Bucs at one point in the 1979-1985 era had the \”Baaad Buc\” on the sidelines — he was a midget in a more traditional pirate costume, meaner looking (he was \”Baaad\” in the George Throughgood sense) who got arrested for underage molestation occurring in the WDAE Baaaad Buc van.

If you are willing to declare that Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, Jr., Ty Cobb, George Brett, Hank Aaron, or Tony Gwynn don’t deserve to be in the HOF, you don’t deserve a vote next time around.
I’m a Soccer Hall of Fame voter, and we don’t get unanimous choices much, either. It’s the nature of the beast, I guess.
No offense, but most of you who are carping about the HoF and the BBWA don’t know what you’re talking about. I know quite a few BBWA writers personally — it’s a diverse group, with many different factions and pockets of opinion, from old-school curmudgeons to new-school sabrmeticians. Painting them with a broad brush is silly.
Here in NYC, the NY Times doesn’t allow its writers to vote for the Hall of Fame (or for MVP or other awards) because they think it’s a conflict of interest. Many journalists are coming around to this same point of view. Newsday columnist Ken Davidoff fully expects the HoF vote to be taken away from the BBWA soon — not because they’re doing a bad job, but because the situation is ethically untenable (although that’s not keeping him from voting as long as they’ll let him do so).
Whether you’re voting for U.S. President or for the Hall of Fame, democracy is messy. That’s one of its charms.

Namath wore them at ‘Bama, and at first with the Jets (black, heavily taped) until his white SpotBilts showed up (they were the only manufacturer making white cleated shoes at the time). By ’68 and for SBIII he was wearing Riddells (they’d gone into the white cleat biz, largely to supply the KC A’s). After SBII he got his shoe deal with Puma, which lasted for several seasons.

Very loosely. The story model, though, is the big name college player turning pro…much more like Red Grange and the Bears.
You of course know that some claim, if you trace the geneaology back, the Eskimos are now the Washington Redskins.

Thanks for the heads up about that Gopher book. My brother has been finding the College Vault books for a few teams online for 15$ or so. I was not aware of that Minnesota book or story about the numbers.
And, of course, there were things the National League left behind back east…

Love the old time football uniforms.
And last Sunday night TCM played my favorite football movie. “The Freshmen” with Harold Lloyd.
So now I will check ut todays stuff.
I SO wish LEATHERHEADS was a better movie. Got it from the Red Box for a grand total of $1.07. Wasn’t worth it. Oh, okay, maybe to at least see it. A seriously “one-and-done” film.
—Ricko
You ever see “The Freshman” Not a lot of people into silent movies. I read about it that ESPN football encyclopedia. The section about football movies and wanted to see it.
I became a Harold Llyod fan after that movie and enjoy most of his movies when I catch them on TCM
“Leatherheads”was supposed to be loosely based on the Duluth Eskimos I think.
I did love the old uniforms worn in it. And to see it in color and HD of course.
Speaking of football movies, I was watching The Waterboy this afternoon and I notice a mistake. In the Bourbon Bowl both teams wear a 50th anniversary patch that has 1948-1998. That is 51 years. If it was the 50th the bowl would have started in 1949.

if only we could have more days of this over~hype, that would be sooooooo much better.
It’s funny when you see advertising from the 50s or 60s. People smoking in offices etc.. but it really stands out when you see something like a sportswear catalog…with only Caucasians models! You absolutely would never see that today…well except maybe for a Hockey Catalog!

Actually, rpm you would have 14 more game since there would be 15 games in a 16 team playoff.
So I was looking through the AP photo section to see if they had any early game photos, and instead they had one of the new BCS executive director.
Bill Hancock said today that a major college football playoff would lead to more injuries, conflict with final exams, kill the bowl system and diminish the importance of the regular season.
Let’s see, what else…it’s bad for the environment, it can cause E.D. and it takes the fizz out of your soda?
What utter crap. Just say you’re getting a boatload of money and you like the status quo. I wouldn’t exactly share your sentiment, but at least I’d respect you.
Oh and by the way, the game (now that the hype is over) looks nice. I like the all-whites from Texas and the Tide’s crimson jerseys. Definitely Top 5 material.

Been having his conversation for 35, almost 40, years.
Won’t happen. Can’t happen. Can’t kill off the bowls. Just too entrenched. Too lucrative for too many schools and conferences.
Devalues the snot out of the regular season, and probably makes some bowls vanish. No one sets up games for schools like Marshall or Ball State cuz TV numbers flat-out vanish. “Who wants to watch Marshall or Ball State? They ever make the Sweet 16. No. Minor league.”
or this…
“Damn, our qb woulda won the Heisman but coach held him out of a game to rest him on accounta we had the #1 seed for the conference sewed up.”
If ratings toward something like a Final Four mean nothing, such a thing is entirely possible. I mean, if winning the SEC title game gets a team a certain seed because of some arbitrary system of ranking conferences…
Or, if the final rankings of 1-16 are all that matters, can kill off the conference championship games, too. They become irrelevant.

See, if the BCS director would have said that, I’d agree to disagree and still respect him in the morning. But the crap about injuries and final exams is crap. Every other level of football has a playoff, and let’s remember some D-II or D-III schools blow away some BCS schools academically. They seem to have no problems with exams.

The 50th anniversary of anything would be celebrated fifty years after the first version of the event. Thus, 1948-98 would have been correct. If the game were celebrating its 50th occurence, it would have been wrong. For example, 2010 will be the 50th season for the Minnesota Twins, as their first season was 1961. But their 50th anniversary should celebrated 50 years after the first season, in 2011.

Some day I might have a chance to comment when the sun is still shining.
Uniforms for both teams tonight look good. Except for one thing. Get rid of the nascar patches on the front. I can handle one, but four looks like ass. Alabama: SEC patch – gone. Swoosh – even goner. Script A – superfluous. Bowl logo – okay (I guess) but make it readable on a TV screen.

No system can guarantee that. That doesn’t mean the prospect of an upstart taking on a traditional power isn’t compelling. Don’t we watch Vermont take on Duke in the NCAA b-ball tourney just to see if they can knock them off?
There have been any number of so-called championship games that have become snorefests: tonight’s could become another (yeah, McCoy got hurt, but shit happens in the game). The bowls are watered down now, too many 7-5 and 6-6 teams in them and many do not make money for the schools involved.

As I said, then let’s not use the “premier competition level” as a reason to say a 16-game playoff will be better.
Besides, I never addressed that aspect until someone did. I’m looking at logistics, finances and, frankly, reality. Anyone can find 16 teams, identify the top 8 bowls and look at a calendar. research schools like The are better for post grad work no doubt, they are not the pillar of academics for undergrads. i had a math class with 1,500 students, a grad assistant would roll a vcr/tv out on stage, turn off the auditorium lights, and the tape~prof had a thick german accent. i tell you what though, my university did teach me to stand up for myself, that nobody was going to hold my hand. i was not offended The is a shit school, i just think the small school=better school is craptacular exaggeration.
So do I – that’s why I said “some.” And big school = better school is equally exaggerating.
when i said “better” i was comparing them to themselves, as in an undergrad degree means spit from The, but a graduate or post graduate degree is a noooice degree depending.

If you are willing to declare that Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, Jr., Ty Cobb, George Brett, Hank Aaron, or Tony Gwynn don’t deserve to be in the HOF, you don’t deserve a vote next time around.

Yeah, I’m kidding. I know it’s not easy, and there are a lot of factors involved. I still think it can be done, though. Problem is, you get people so entrenched that they fall back on the injuries/grades B.S. instead of admitting the stuff you mention. If both sides stopped all the spin, then there might be a chance for a bowl-friendly playoff.
Actually, I like about half of the bowls. I just don’t believe a 7th place team in a conference or a 6-6 team deserves a bowl. FSU was a nice story, but really they should have been at home.
Just get it down to about 15 bowls. That covers all the Top 25 teams plus a few others. Get rid of the corporate-sounding names, add the possibility of an Undefeated Bowl the following week if you still have two undefeated teams and I’d be just as happy as I would with a playoff.
It is a visually appealing game tonight with 2 of college football’s more traditional uniforms. Not a big fan of so much white but for some reason I have liked Texas uniforms and helmets.

on the field performance determines everything in the old bowl system, or the bcs system except who plays for the title, which is a useless commodity anyway.
“But,” said this year’s Gator fan, a mournful tear coming to his eye, “that stupid conference playoff cost ‘us’ and Tim Tebow any shot ‘we’ had at ‘our’ rightful place in the BCS title game.”
Get ready for a lot of that kind of endless whining in a 16-team playoff format.
Or this from #14 or so in any given year…
“We deserved to go a lot a farther but the refs really jobbed us in our 47-10 first-round loss.”
I’d rather hear more teams be able to say they ended with a bowl win than listen to the fans of 15 of the Top 16 weep about how they lost—again this year—their final game.
God, that would get old in a hurry.

Mixed feelings on that one. I’d like NYD being special again (the Winter Classic may not agree), but sometimes the overlap is a problem. Like this year, when I wanted to tape Penn State and WVU, but they were playing at the same time.
In my opinion we need a playoff. What we have now is nothing more then the NCAA version of Olympic figure skating. It was probably 1981 or so and unlike your class where 90% of the kids were wearing them, I may have been the only kid in my entire school who was. Everyone else was wearing Nike, New Balance or Adidas. GASS was the brand of choice for non-athletic shoes.
When every other level of football and even high schools have working playoffs you know something is wrong with the picture.
why do anti playoff people have so many hypothetical negative scenarios about if 1A ever had a playoff?
College football would survive in 1A with a playoff. Why worry so much about what ifs
What is so terribly wrong about wanting to see a champion determined on the field just like every single other level of football does it.

all the \”hang up\” on the NC game is because this is sports. champions get crowned. thats the point. if there was no one \”best\” team, then what is the point of playing the sport at all? why keep score? this coming football season, every team in the nation is going to be looking at alabama with a big target on their back because they were the best team this year, sort of. by saying no to a playoff, you are essentially telling boise state that they will never win a national championship. why do you think kelly left cincinnati and cost that team a chance to make some noise in the BCS? because if kelly goes undefeated in three years at notre dame like he did with cincy, he WILL be in the NC game. its not fair to the smaller schools who never get a chance. i will say again, a 16 team playoff is way too much. rpm you saw the playoff idea i have, better than a \”sweet 16\”.
Ricko- re your florida fan thing- there will always, ALWAYS be fans of one school or another that bitch and moan about the officiating costing them, it happening in the early round of a playoff or in the bowl game, it doesnt matter.
jim~i’ve been to bama, no comment, i’ll let them have their night.
larry~i don’t think you understand, i don’t care who wins, and i suckle at the college football teet as much as anybody. i enjoy the other games, but i only “care” about what my school does, and i don’t care if a tourney, or voters, or whomever says they are #1 or 10 as long as they beat the scUM, win the conference, and go to the rose bowl. in that scenario they won an on the field championship, and earned the right to play in a bonus game of significance that i can get excited about. national champ…yawn, that is for the espn talking heads, and people that don’t have a dog in the fight.
Shaun~ yes your idea is good as far as playoffs go, but i still don’t need it. as far as targets on backs, every conference’s real on the field winner has a target, and the NC(real or perceived) will have the target. but who says i don’t keep score? i have stitched sweaters that would make your eyes pop with documentation about such things, i just don’t care about the ultimate national #1, it carries little weight to me.
as for the sarcastic comments that this is not uni related~ why must we always fall on that sword? nobody was stopped from making comments about uniforms, but it is “title” night, and an apt discussion for people to have that also have a like fetish. how do people who have a uni fetish feel about a playoff? well now we know. if alabama’s helmets are more scuffed we can discuss that too. besides, to everyone’s joy, i am retiring from the comments, going back to just reading, we will both be happier for it.
but on the way out…about a year and a half ago i was eating chilaquiles hungover at a mexican diner with the pineapple reading the paper when i noticed that MSU was getting 4 and the hook against NW. i said to her, if i had a house, it would be a mortal lock on sparty. she yawned, and told me about a show at a gallery, but eventually we decided that we would each take 5 games a week $100 of monopoly money on each game(with juice). sort of like when they have the chimp pick the stocks against an expert. that week last year i went 1~4, but sparty won going away, and we wound up tied after the bowls. tell you what, she is as observant as anybody when it comes to this site’s fetish too, and it turned out it was a nice way to connect on something living in different cities that was beyond the mundane day to day complaints about life/work/etc that can plague a long distance phone call relationship.[editor’s note: with regards to that initial NW-MSU game, she was a top 15 finalist of 150 candidates for NW’s MFA program the year before, 8 would be accepted. although she did not know it yet, the day after the final decision was made, but a month before she found out she was in the final cut ,she held one of the professor’s hair as this woman puked in the public toilet down the hall from my studio. apparently this nut had it for a painter down the hall, and when her drunken banging on his door didn’t yield results, pineapple helped her out. when she later found out she didn’t get in, i am sure she wished she would have plunged this woman’s head in the “drink” that night, but she also gained her 1st ncaa football enemy, the northwestern wildcats] but i digress, this year we put a gene & georgetti dinner on the proceedings, same deal, 5 games 100 ea. with juice every week, except the stakes were upped to 500 for the army navy game, and 500 for 5 bowl games, looks like i am buying…

Ricko it was a tour, but the Yomiuri newspaper who owns the Giants were expecting that the Orioles, who were the World Series champs in 1970, would be repeating and coming to Japan to face the Giants (and other teams), but the Giants were in the midst of their 9 straight Japan Series championships and corporate was going to sell this tour as a “Real World Series.” Even though the Orioles lost to the Pirates, they kept playing and dominated the games.
