Guess What Chips I Won’t Be Eating Today?

Screen shot 2010-01-05 at 12.59.37 AM.png

Have there ever been a worse helmet design match-up than last night’s Fiesta Bowl? Woof. Fortunately, the game featured a few uni-notable aspects:

• Boise State wore orange pants for the first time since the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Although the pants had way too many gewgaws, I thought the basic white-over-orange look was really nice.

• Boise State also became the latest team to don riflery gloves.

• Speaking of gloves, I didn’t watch the halftime show, but Geoff Poole did: “The TCU band’s drum major was wearing what looked like the TCU riflery gloves. Holy crap. That’s going one step too far, if you ask me.” No photo, alas.

• A few Boise players pulled the old Nike stunt of wearing mismatched undersleeve colors. Most of them, however, went the more conventional route.

• At one point both of TCU’s No. 47s were on the screen at the same time — and Fox put up the graphic for the wrong one

• Speaking of Fox miscues, Jeron Johnson’s academic major was the subject of a rather unfortunate typo.

• It’s tough to see in this screen shot, but the folks at Nike couldn’t have been happy to see a TCU player sporting some Under Armour logo creep.

• No photos, but Zack Hickman sent me this footwear note during the game: “Both teams are wearing new cleats. Most skill position players appear to be wearing the new Nike Vapors that I was actually able to see during a focus group I was a part of. The way to tell the difference between the current 4.2 Vapors and the new Vapors is the large swoosh on the toe. Another thing: I may be mistaken, but the BSU offensive line appears to be wearing Nike Hyperdunk cleats. Basketball shoes as cleats?!” If someone more footwear-obsessed than I would like to provide some visual documentation of all this, I’ll be happy to run it tomorrow.

But the biggest surprise of the night for me was that I got quite a few e-mails that basically said, “What the hell is TCU wearing?” I guess a lot of casual fans had remained blissfully unaware of the riflery program until now. Lucky them.

(Big thanks to Chris Salove, Sam Forster, and Clark Ruhland for their screen shots.)

Uni Watch News Ticker: Georgia Tech has decided that the Orange Bowl is a great time to unveil a new jersey. Brilliant! He also sent along these gorgeous cycling illustrations. ”¦ Remember the old Cincy Royals logo? When Chris Chaussee got married seven years ago, he and his true love used this logo, which they put on guitar picks as party favors. ”¦ Yesterday afternoon I was at Foley’s on West 33rd, where they had an odd photo showing Seaver and Gentry in various states of undress. ”¦ Wichita State wore MTXE-era throwbacks on Sunday (with thanks to Ryan Atkinson). ”¦ Ray Emery has a new homage-driven mask design (with thanks to Matt Pesotski). ”¦ Check out this shot, sent me way by J. Sebastian Smelko. The jersey was worn by Thornton Fractional North (that’s an Illinois high school) for their rivalry game against Thornton Fractional South around 1967. Love the “Beat South” yoke. Makes me wonder how many other teams have worn special messages for their rivalry games over the years (and I don’t mean special messages concocted by Nike’s marketing team). One that comes immediately to mind is the Jolly Roger that Navy wore for the 1962 Army/Navy game. Got any others? … An item toward the end of this page indicates that Kent State football is switching to Nike (with thanks to Jody Michael). ”¦ Bizarre contribution of the day: Dave Sizer was driving through our nation’s midsection last week and spotted the Majestic logo being used by an oil-change shop. Hey, all you Majestic people reading this, give me some good inside dirt and I’ll tell you where the shop is located.

The “odd” Mets photo was widely distributed back then.

It shows the two pitchers after the pandemonium at Shea Stadium following the Mets’ 1969 World Series victory.

On USA Today’s website today(wow that is redundant) they had an article up about what the next decade will bring and here was one of the quotes for what might happen in sports

    “-The four-quarter commercial.
The search for more revenue streams could lead to the Hewlett-Packard Packers facing the Toyota Titans in the Microsoft Super Bowl.”

I know it wont happen but it would still blow donkeys if it did!

Worst element between those two helmets?

The gray facemask on Boise State. Lame.

I kinda like the lizard skin pattern for TCU. It’s a great look for a team called the Horned Frogs.

That Cincinnati Royals logo wasn’t their logo only when they were in Cincinnati. They kept the logo when they went to KC:
    link
and used it still when they Sacramento:

I spotted those new Tech jerseys during the promo for the Orange Bowl during the Fiesta Bowl. The Tech players were taking team photos in the background, and you could tell right away it was a different jersey.

If Boise would have just got rid of those horrid thick blue horizontal stripes on the shoulders and back of the pants they would look decent, it is just to much clutter and unneccsary stuff.

Nothing like butt stripes to give a uni some real class.

Good to see Quick Step back in blue this season. Sky should have run the Adidas stripes all the way up to the collar, but the NORC (Name on Rib Cage) is just awesome. Of course by July they’re going to be begging the UCI to let them invert the colors, like BMC did last year.

A lot of the Boise players still wear the Tri-Bolt undershirts beneath their uniforms.

    Speaking of the Cincinnati Royals…
One of my favorite all time hoops jerseys.
The stripes was pretty avant garde at the time…

Later, they went vertical on us…

And, if you go back to the Rochester Royals, you get this look (bet the NBA would have tough time getting players to wear them as throwback, huh)…

Anyone know the name of the gloves Boise and TCU were wearing last night? I understand the riflery, but these had gray index and pinkie fingers, while the two middle fingers were black. I haven’t been able to find any information about them, so I thought Uni-Watch might have an “in”. Thanks.

Re: the two 47s for TCU

I would argue that the super-imposed graphic isn’t “wrong”. They give the information for the player facing the camera. If anything, it’s a correction. Someone watching it might say, “Hirt? I thought 47 was Kelton?” Then the graphic pops up and they realize “oh, there are TWO 47s”

Just realized the NBA Royals franchise probably has called more cities home than any other team since I’ve been following sports (one that’s still around, anyway)…
    Rochester
    Cincinnati
Kansas City (became Kings, for obvious reasons)
    Omaha

    Can’t imagine who’d beat that.

-all from my mom in the span of about 5 minutes last night. lol. i’m so proud…

Last night’s bowl match-up was so uni-unfriendly that I received texts from a couple of friends, complaining about the visual disaster on the field. And these are guys who normally do not give a flip how the teams dress.

Wasn’t Ricko who last year said Boise State needed to wear a contrasting color against TCU in the Pointsetia Bowl, which Boise lost? Well, last night Boise did, and won. It was a good luck, butt stripes and horns and gray facemasks excepted.

    douche bag design

If TCU got rid of all the trim, its uniforms last night would not have been bad: plain purple jerseys over plain gray pants. Too much clutter otherwise.

I do like the black-over-purple look TCU wore last year. Didn’t at first when Northwestern used it back in the 1990s, but it’s growing on me. For some reason, though, I don’t like the purple-over-black combination, the other home uniform they used a lot this year. link

Thanks for posting. At least the scoreboard looks good on the plain green wall at Wayne State.

For all the pesky faults with the newest Nike designs, they do have the redeeming quality demonstrating in several cases (Ohio State, LSU, even Virginia Tech)exactly how “sleeve” stripes should be done on today’s jersey cuts. As opposed to, say, the entire NFL.

    always check the FAQ

Why do you hate purple so much?
I actually think purple in nature is quite nice – eggplants, violets, plums, etc. But purple in man-made design applications has always struck me as really tacky. Like, seriously, have you ever seen a purple car? A total nightmare. Same goes for purple clothing, especially uniforms.

Don’t you realize purple is the color of royalty?
Sure, but so what? I live in America, a country whose very conception was predicated on anti-royalty sentiment. Maybe that’s why, as I like to point out, not a single U.S. state uses purple as one of its official state colors. If that doesn’t fill your heart with patriotic pride, nothing will.”

Granted, TCU always looks like crap, but it’s hard to believe they would break out their riflery uniforms a second time considering how terrible they are.

The only redeeming thing about their alternates is the representation of the blood shooting out of horned lizard eyes which is at least somewhat educational.

I thought it was James Cash.

From TCU Magazine, spring 2003, a letter to the editor (trying to assess culpability, not beat a dead horse):

I read with interest and dismay your comments in the Winter 2002 issue about the new band uniforms. Horrible is the only way to describe them. I have not spoken to any TCU alumni who are pleased with the turn that the school has taken over uniforms. When Dennis Franchione came to TCU, the first thing we all saw was the new purple-and-black color scheme. Never mind the fact that TCU colors are purple and white. Then, with much fanfare, the new purple and black band uniforms were introduced. Then we observed the coach wearing black rather than PURPLE and WHITE.

Ga. Tech has a long tradition of navy blue (previously black) being an unofficial school color. They wore blue in the Chicken (ne Peach) Bowl last year, in the ACC championship game in 2006, and in the Citrus Bowl for their national championship in 1990 (when blue was the home jersey). The basketball team for years wore blue on the road.

Yeah, I know. I agree with you on this one, I’m just feeling rather grouchy today and “people would whine” felt like a good thing to say.

I remember a special message in a rivalry game back in 1974; Lee Corso (go figure!) had Indiana’s road jerseys stenciled with “BEAT PURDUE” in red on the front, right above the numbers for their final game in the annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket, which was at Purdue that year.

It didn’t work out too well; Purdue won that day 38-17.

Lee Corso was somewhat of a huckster, but he was consisitent and he did generate interest for Indiana football, which isn’t an easy thing to do. I do like and respect Lee Corso, he’s quite a colorful person and he’s still good for the game of college football.

I like TCU’s riflery uniforms, a whole helluva lot more than their normal unis. I like the pants, I LOVE the helmet (especially the blood stripes). I think they could (and should) pull that look off full-time.

Checked out MetsBlog and noticed that Jason Bay has been introduced in the snow white Mets jersey. Mets management can’t even figure out that the best thing to do would probably use the new “retro” pinstripe for the press conference. I love this team.

So after months of reading about these rivalry uniforms on this site, I must ask…why does Paul and everyone else refer to them as “riflery?” Other than the “Nike are d-bags, so we call them that instead of ‘rivalry’ just because we don’t want to use a Nike word” excuse, is there any other reason?

The TCU guide quoted above says purple and white are school colors and that white symbolizes “a clean game.” What do black and grey symbolize then other than the absence of white? Yikes, no wonder TCU lost.

Yeah, because it’s the entire fabric and not just accents, not identifying trim. Bengals don’t wear Zubaz. For better or worse, it’s still a football a uniform.

TCU last night was wearing horned lizard suits (great for hoping to be told to “Come on down” on THE PRICE IS RIGHT; for a major college football program, not so much).

If Richmond Spiders wore pants like the downhill skiers wore a few years back, what would be the reaction to that? Maybe just a bit too cirque du soleil?

As a kid, if someone offered me a full ride to school in return for playing hoops, my first questions would involve “What courses do you offer?” “Which type of offense do you run?” “What kind of career can I have after basketball?” Even, “So where are the cheerleaders?” Shoes wouldn’t even be a blip on my radar.

If the shoe fits and I’m comfortable in it, I don’t care what brand. The fact that recruiting can depend on what shoe contract you have is a little bit sad.
Or, look at it THIS way, if someone’s gonna judge you by how you dress, then dress that way to get YOUR way. Use his narrowness of thought to your advantage. Which of you truly would be the one in control in that situation?

Banking from the back of a van is just a little bit different and you know it.

There’s some jobs/professions that should require strict uniform and dress code policies, and some that shouldn’t.

Example: Someone works in a cubicle, never deals with customers face to face, ever – yet they’re still required to wear a tie – why?

Yeah, I follow the dress code where I work, but that doesn’t mean they’re a good idea.
Ah, well, at least you admit there are situations where it does matter. Thought you were saying there weren’t. Presentation (including how you present yourself) IS important.

My Dad always said, “You’ll act the way you’re dressed.”
    Thought he was nuts.

    Now I know he wasn’t.

Even as a creative director at an ad agency, I found my staff responded differently to me on days I’d wear a suit and tie. Was much easier to command respect in situations when it wasn’t best to be “one of the gang.” Sometimes, when you’re supposed to be the one in control, you need to look like you are.

    Oregon – L (new-ish whites)
    Cincy – L (new whites)
    USF – W (new-ish whites)
    S. Carolina – L
    Okla. State – L

All whites: 9 wins, 10 losses.
As someone who attends 2 or 3 TCU games per season, I can attest that their normal uniforms are just as horrendous in person as they are in pictures. Not as bad as the riflery uni’s, but still very, very bad. The basic problem – purple and black do not in any way look good together. You really need to choose one or the other, and it seems that some time ago TCU chose purple. At some point maybe they’ll wake up and realize black is a silly fad that has more to do with their former douchebag coach than the university. Until then, they will continue to look like a mid major directional school.

A couple of years ago I did a sloppy mock up of what I thought they should look more like

    link

A couple of years back I read a pretty lengthy article about former TCU great Bob Lilly and TCU’s past football teams. Alot of the article focused on the class of the program years back and commented that the Bob Lilly-era teams wore Dark helmets, Purple Jerseys and a Khaki color pants, and went on to express a desire to return the TCU uniforms to that color scheme and template in order to connect to TCU’s past.

Uniforms are not everything when it comes to establishing tradition and class, but there is a lot of good to be said about the timelessness of the College Football experience and knowing that he team you are watching now has more of a connection to the college and the teams gone before it than the color of the football and the grass on the field.

If so, that’s absolutely ridiculous. There’s no reason why a football uniform should in any way evoke, or be inspired by, the team’s mascot. Football uniforms should feature Northwestern (or UCLA) stripes and block numbers. The end.

My intent was logos that weren’t just city name initials. So no NY, LA, KC, NJ, etc. ATL is an abbreviation for Atlanta, not three words that start with A, T, and L. Same with PHX and FLA for the Suns and Panthers, respectively.

OKC for the Thunder probably counts since OK abbreviates Oklahoma and the C stands for City.

The NYR Statue of Liberty logo for the Rangers is in the gray area because it represents three separate words, but involves both the city name and nickname. Same with the NYK logo for the Knicks.

I wonder if that link jersey is just faded or if the school colors have changed over the years. They wear link now. Or maybe it is purple and it just looks blue on my monitor.

Kinda shows why the ACC struggles as much as it does. You have 6 teams recruiting in 2 states. There might be talent in the Norfolk/Hampden Roads area in Virginia, but to have 6 teams all trying to get those players for the same conference, you’re going to severely dilute the product.

Most other conferences are rather spread out and allow for one school to dominate a given region and allows for the conference to grow as a whole. Look at the SEC, where its basically one dominant school per state. Get the best in your own state and you’ll do well. In the ACC, the best in North Carolina alone has 4 ACC schools to choose from… in their own state alone!

I just don’t get it. Who cares?

As a kid, if someone offered me a full ride to school in return for playing hoops, my first questions would involve “What courses do you offer?” “Which type of offense do you run?” “What kind of career can I have after basketball?” Even, “So where are the cheerleaders?” Shoes wouldn’t even be a blip on my radar.

If the shoe fits and I’m comfortable in it, I don’t care what brand. The fact that recruiting can depend on what shoe contract you have is a little bit sad.
Hey, two years ago we did a video for a chain of 24 car dealerships regarding their dress code policies, because so many of the young people their hired were saying things like, “Whaddya mean, why do I have to tuck in my shirt?”

It’s like kids go from 4th grade to age 18 with no broadening of their horizons whatsoever (except for having a couple kids, that is).

    —Ricko
Explain why one should need a tucked in shirt to be able to sell something, cars or otherwise.

Society places far too much emphasis on appearances and not enough on knowledge. An idiot in a suit is still an idiot.
Right.
    What are you, 13?
Would you trust your money to a banker wearing parachute pants and a “BITE ME’ t-shirt whose office was in the back of his van? No matter HOW educated he seemed to be?

I understand your role as our Resident Contrarian and Upholder of How the World Ought to Be, but it truly is okay to accept the reality of things once in a while. Won’t mean you’ve surrendered your youthful independent thought, just that a bit of wisdom and understanding of how things really do work is beginning to creep in.

Or, look at it THIS way, if someone’s gonna judge you by how you dress, then dress that way to get YOUR way. Use his narrowness of thought to your advantage. Which of you truly would be the one in control in that situation?

    —Ricko

    —Ricko
I think there’s a lot of should and does confusion here. Are there a bunch of conformist d-bags out there who would hire a turd in a suit over a brilliant person dressed less traditionally? Sure. There are a lot of jerks in the world. But would you rather buy a computer from someone who knows how to turn it on than someone who is wearing a tie? My guess is the former. This is why careers with a big shortage of qualified candidates are more accepting of alternative senses of style. It’s easy to say that wearing a shirt and tie never hurt anybody but that is just not true. What about the kid who is unsure about his/her gender and experimenting with different personas? What about the adult who decides the social biases that are reflected in the suit are just wrong? Sure the people who make these choices will be looked down upon but if you are the person turning up your nose you’re the douche not them.

Thirdly, your sexual orientation makes no difference to me. Can you can turn the computer on? If you can, you have a chance at the job. Wanna experiment with your clothes, look, and sexual being? Do it on your own time. When you’re on my time, you’ll do as I say or you’ll have a lovely pink slip to go with the pants hanging below your ass and the pink hair you brought to work.

Agreed phil. Huizenga (sp) was the man who brought expansion to Florida in ’93. I read in a book about that expansion that their main reason was to gain fans from more than just the Miami/Dade region. It was more about saying they had enough fans and therefore warranted a team, not so much claiming the whole state as their own.
A side note, Tampa/St. Pete was the expected expansion site, but the money put up by Huizenga and his business ventures really won the expansion committee over.

And the book is titled Playing Hardball by David Whitford.

alright, i have seen them on. the jersey is better then i thought, while similar to the falcons, it isn’t a straight copy, and it is kind of representative of a stinger coming down from the shoulder. but if you remove the blue chest line i still like the olde ones more. the pants are a serious downgrade, i freaking hate the thin line that goes into the triangle above the knee. why change? is it really any better? it’s subjective, but i think not, i like it when they keep the blue to a minimum. i give it a c-
d+ at best looks like it is missing something on the “sleeve” with that cut to it that missing this being a falcon or old style nc state badge it is nice to see they kept the offset shoulder numbers however

Another random observation on GT uniforms, (while Kool and the Gang perform – wtf???)

One thing I really don’t care for in the new wave of designs is either the side panels encroaching on the front or back number like GT, or the random swirlies and slashies encroaching on the numbers ala Arkansas. It’s a crowded look – too many bumper stickers.

mike, i can understand your dislike for adopting the ‘new’ moniker, but their original premise for adopting florida in the first place was pretty weak, no? (i seem to remember they gave a reason for not using miami originally, but it seemed specious)

i mean, isn’t like the entire northern third of the state pretty much brave country, the midsection are rays/yanks and the lower third are marlins/yanks?

didn’t they try to ‘adopt’ the entire state as their own in 93? much like “minnesota” (although i realize why the couldn’t be the minneapolis or st. paul senators), the TEXAS rangers and the COLORADO rockies? (and later the ARIZONA d-bags)?

the whole ‘name your team for the state instead of city’ is, in baseball anyway, bullshit, at least to me

not saying they should change it NOW, but they really should have been the miami marlins in the first place, no? (and im pretty sure there was a reason they weren’t originally the miami marlins aside from wanting to adopt the state too, but that seemed to be a logical reason at the time)…but really, misnamed from the start

    /done now
Agreed phil.

You two do raise good points about the names. Keep in mind that the Devil Rays didn’t exist when FL was first chosen, so there weren’t those fans claiming the middle of the state yet. I think Huizenga and Co wanted to claim the whole state for themselves, so went with Florida. Plus, I think the other key part of that is they didn’t actually play in Miami. The Dolphins play in the same spot, but did start at the Orange Bowl in downtown Miami, so they didn’t change names when they moved. Now that the Marlins are going into Miami, there is actually some reason to that change.

However, the only real reason they are doing it now is because the City of Miami is the one town contributing hundreds of millions to the new stadium. Had the stadium been in Lauderdale or some other burb, they wouldn’t be changing the name. Miami forced that change in the deal, and the team couldn’t say no to that money. That is the biggest reason why I’m not liking it. 19 seasons as “Florida”, and ditching it to appease the politicos.

I’m sure I’ll get over it and end up with some M gear, but not before I stock up on F’s! And I hope the Miamians (and Cubans, etc.) will go to the games at the new place since it’ll be closer for them. It’ll be farther for me (2 hours), so I know I’ll go less.

As a GT alum, I think the two different jerseys are close to being great. But I like the one worn all season better than this new one. (Both are better than that yellow gold last yr though.) The numbers on the back look too low though. Too much white space below the NOB.

Re: Miami Marlins, I used to think that they went with “Florida” because there had already been a single-A minor league team in the ’80s called the Miami Marlins (Florida State League). They were the Miami Orioles in the ’70s but originated as the Miami Marlins in the ’60s when they were a “Class D” team. This is the same team now known as the Miami Miracle which is part-owned by actor Bill Murray and Jimmy Buffett. I have no evidence whatsoever to back up this explanation, but you have to admit it would’ve been a good excuse for Wayne Huizenga & Co. to use.

as for the “stinger” stripe, i was referring to the gold stripe that comes from the pit stain. i was looking at the link uni design in the abstract, i will say it again…you may not see it but i see the gold/blue that comes up the shoulders as a yellow acket head(abstracted) the pit stain as a y.j. body(again abstracted), and the line that comes out the bees butt as a sting(again abstracted). it is the same way the the pants the U wear look like the state of link to me, again abstract. it always amazed me that nobody ever pointed that out, or if they did i never read it. i love those pantaloons.

My only uni-related comment – I like those US white uniforms. I’ve never seen a shoulder design like that, with the blue insert and then white TV numbers on the insert. The Thunder had nice unis. When I have time I’ll try and share some screen shots.

By the way, the Cougars only had black unis, so there were a lot of color vs. color games. There was almost a black vs. black game once…luckily the other team had alternates and brought them.
Jim, I never saw them play before I moved away. It would be cool to see some pics. The sweatshirt is a little eerie eh?
Here you go:
Cougars in black, Thunder in light blue – link

Hard to tell from the grainy photo, but the Tacoma name and number are black with orange trim. The tiled side stripes are black and gray – link Oh yeah, I’d wear that uni.

Closeup of the Cougars jersey – link On the left shoulder is the IBL logo.

AND1 designed the Cougars’ unis. Don’t know who did Tacoma’s.

Those definitely aren’t Hyperize cleats. Look at the lines and most importantly the flywire “anchor” in the back. The Hyperize doesn’t have that.

Many newly designed football uni pants always seem to be poorly done, whether Boise, The U, etc. That is probably why you see so many who like the stale old stripe on the side. Boise’s pants with the words “Boise State” I like in principle, but they don’t execute it correctly. So many cycling shorts do it so well, so should football

TCU’s rifelry are the best of the Nike kits, other than the TCU font on the helmet I like everything about them, especially the pant stripes and jersey blocking, and I am at a rival school that you guys laud, SMU. We (SMU) have too many stripes for my liking, especially on the helmet and pants. Everyone should look to Michigan as the ideal model, large color blocks with a unified, abstract helmet design, vs the Ohio State model, bland colors and too many stripes.

I love the TCU rivalry uniforms .. they are 200% better than the old version. And the helmets are great looking …. are u kidding me that people think these are not great helmets???? Why do some hate change so much?
