“The Rose Goes In The Front, Big Guy”

the rose goes in the front

By Phil Hecken & Rick Pearson

Classic line, classic movie. Said by Crash Davis to Nuke Laloosh in “Bull Durham.” Great baseball movie, nice unis. Some sports movies just strike a chord in us, and we can recite them perhaps better than we can the Pledge of Allegiance. But just how well do we know these movies? Let’s find out.

As we close my 2009 posting out, it’s time for the annual end of year Uni Watch uni quiz. I’ll be joined by the man who’s seen every one of these movies, sometimes twice, sometimes more, and the man who brings you Benchies every weekend, Rick Pearson, aka, “Ricko”. We collaborated on this set of 21 sports movie quotes and the uniforms from those movies — some you will know, some you may not — but can you reconcile the UNIFORMS from those movies with those classic (and not so classic) quotes? Here’s Rick:

~~~
Movies, movies, movies. So much a part of the Holidays. Traditional films to watch every year. Some to watch over and over and over. And many of us give, and get, DVD’s as gifts (I, for example, got all 66 Hopalong Cassidy films in a nifty Hoppy lunchbox from my daughter).
Many times, though, those gifts are classic sports films or histories such as When It Was A Game or Ken Burns’s Baseball.
So, we figured we’d play “Match The Movie Line To The Movie Uniform” — but with a twist — on the last day before most everyone heads back to work.
Simple enough, right? But, instead of just a google-able “movie quote”, you need to know the unis worn in the films in question. And that’s all the clue you’re gonna get.
~~~

Thanks Rick. So there you go. We’ll give you the quote, and you get to guess the movie — by matching it to the “uni clue” listed separately. So, if Quote 1 matches up with Uni Clue F, then you’d say “1-F”.

So get a pencil and a piece of paper — first ID the movie by quote. Then, in the second section, find the still from that movie — and match them up. At the end of this section, we’ll give you one answer, just to get you started. Probably somewhere around mid-day, depending on how things are going, we’ll even give you a list of the movies we’re looking for. And then, we’ll post the answers at 8:00 pm Eastern, so be sure to check back at that time.

Ready? GO!

QUOTES:

1. I am choosing to win this fucking game.

2. All the way up with a red hot poker. I can play anywhere now.

3. Say, boy – does you do this constantly?
“No, suh. I does it all the time.”

4. Man, this is baseball, you gotta stop thinking! Just have fun.

5. Hey, that’s weird. No college given, no high school. It just says he’s been a resident of the state of Maryland for the last two years and two months, and that he likes to embroider.

6. I play hockey and I fornicate, ’cause those are the two most fun things to do in cold weather.

7. I know everything there is to know about the greatest game ever invented.

8. Just so you know, we really suck.
“Hey, I’ll decide who sucks around here.”

9. Every night, every morning”¦and sometimes during arithmetic.

10. See! I told you I broke his fuckin’ neck!

11. Holy shit. Talk about your all time backfires.

12. We don’t have a cow. We have a bull.

13. Kiss my Armani ass!

14. Those Yankees are real turds.

15. You trying to say Jesus Christ can’t hit a curveball?

16. You do speak Canadian, don’t you?

17. You’re not God, Nickerson. You’re just a typing teacher.

18. This young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country’s refusal to accept him.

19. I’m playing for Rio Grande Short-Haul Trucking, Briggs and Brown Sanitation, First State Bank of Salome, Woody’s Smokehouse…

20. Charlie, here comes the deuce.

21. I guess some mistakes you never stop paying for.

Well there you have it. Not so easy is it now. But you uniform geniuses should be able to narrow it down, via the process of elimination, until you get a perfect score. We’ll even give you one toughie to help narrow it down.

Here’s your first answer: 3-E [The quote “Say, boy – does you do this constantly?” … “No, suh. I does it all the time.” — is spoken by Leon Carter (James Earl Jones) and Esquire Joe Callaway (Stan Shaw) after the latter bowled over the former at home plate, and comes from the movie, “BINGO LONG’S TRAVELING ALL-STARS & MOTOR KINGS”]. Technically, you don’t need to know the name of the movie [but bonus points if you do, plus the character(s) and actor(s) who spoke the quote(s)].

Play along, see how you do. We’ll have some hints in the afternoon hour and the full rundown for you later tonight.

Exclamation Point

In case you missed it, Paul has a project for us. Here’s Mr. Lukas to explain:

Research Project: I’m compiling a list of the most unusual uni-related moments of the past decade. This can include typos, players wearing the wrong uni, teams being forced to improvise when their uniforms are lost or stolen, torn uniforms, broken equipment, etc. — anything out of the ordinary. I already have a pretty good list, but I’d welcome your nominations (esp. from earlier in the decade), so feel free to chime in. Thanks.

nfl uni tweaks

Our next round of NFL uniform tweaks/revisions
and concepts is upon us.

~~~
Our first submission comes from Santonio Williams,
who has a modern update for the Colts:
Hello,
I chose to change the Colts uni design. My main reason for doing this is not because I’m a Colts fan (or hater)…just because I’ve always found their uniform to be kind of boring, I know alot of people consider this design to be a classic, and to a certain extent, I agree, I love the simplicity (I’m also a fan of white on white uni combinations), but at the same time, the fact that there’s only two colors makes it kind of boring, so I made a few minor adjustments.
First, I noticed that alot of the official sideline merchandise for the Colts this year has included black elements, I personally like this addition, so I’ve added black to the color palette.
I also tried to make the overall uni feel a bit more contemporary by adding the horseshoe logo to the front (similar to the Giants), I also changed the typeface for the numbers, it’s a pretty similar style, but I rounded the numerals out a bit and added the black and white borders to make the numbers appear less “flat”. I also did the same thing to the team wordmark. I then changed the collar of the jersey to blue (I just feel it makes it a little more interesting without ruining the overall “classic feel”) I also made the stripes on the helmet doubled to match the stripes on the jersey and pants (it has always bothered me that the Colts have one stripe on their helmet, and two on everything else).
Finally I changed the stripes from blue to black on the jersey, pants, and helmet, I also made the face mask black aswell.
I think overall this update retains the classic feel, but gives the team a more modern (or perhaps just less boring) look.
I also redesigned the Colts Home uniforms, I think this one more closesly follows the elements of the current home Colts unis…although one touch I am particularly fond of is the slight black outlines on the shoulder stripes.
Thanks for taking the time to check out my design,
Santino Williams
~~~

Our next submission comes from Mark Meeks, and this is a new one for me. It’s for the Panthers. I’ll let Mark explain:

I saw Brad Keppler’s suggestion for the Tweaked Panthers uniform in the 12/12 blog and it reminded me of these. I’ve got some Kenner Starting Lineup figures from the late 90’s of Panthers players. All the ones in white jerseys are wearing black pants like Brad suggested. I guess Kenner was working off a uniform prototype or something as the Panthers have never worn black pants. No excuse for Kenner though, Kevin Greene didn’t join the team until their second year (’96) and he’s shown in black pants too. Sorry for the low-res pic. My iphone was all I had handy.

Thanks for the great work.

Mark Meeks

~~~
Up next is Andrew Greenwood, who you may famously remember for his Bills tweak, is back and is tackling the Jaguars:
Hey Phil,
Took a me a while to finish this one, but I think it’s decent for what it is. Redesign of the Jaguars. They need to dump the teal. Went with orange, a tan/sand and deep chocolate. Sorta based on the new Anaheim Ducks colors, but at least much more realistic for a Jaguar. That blue tongue always weirded me out. Helps to balance out some colors in the AFC South, I think. Colts, Titans, and Texans all use blue, so getting away from that is good for the Jags as well.
Andrew W. Greenwood
~~~

Our last submission today comes from Caleb Borchers, who would love to tweak the Lions:

Phil,

I’m not great with graphics, but I have been playing around a bit with the Detroit Lions. I was born in Detroit, and thus blessed/cursed to be a fan of that sad franchise. The current set seems a little stuck in between tradition and a revamp. I would like to see them go backwards, or forwards. I’ve attached a couple of tweaks I’ve tried. Mostly I’ve played with the color scheme to integrate black more thoroughly. I don’t so much like the black, but if they are going to use it they shouldn’t just toss it on randomly. I wouldn’t mind a new logo, but that’s beyond my capabilities.

~~~
That will do it for this next round of uni tweaks. If you have a team or teams who you think can use a change, whether it be a tweak or a wholescale reworking, I’d love to hear from you.
What happens when Ricko forgets his color markers and instead of giving us a full color Benchies, he helps me with a post? Here’s Ricko:
Six frames, no color? Ummm…let’s just say it snowed. A lot. No…wait…even better, the Benchies are having a white out. Yeah, that’s it, they’re having a white out.
And with, enjoy your Sunday Benchies.
Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: It may be football season, but there’s always action in the hot stove league, so today, we’re jumping back to the diamond. I’m sure some of you will know this game from sight — hell, some of you may have even been there. Say what you will, and blame a certain Notre Dame High School For Boys grad for making this game necessary, but the real goat will always be Alex Gonzalez. Nuff hint? Guess The Game. Please link to you answer. And, as always, if you enjoy the game, please send me some new scoreboards! Drop me a line. Thanks!
rose bowl rose inline
In the final few days before the Rose Bowl, I’m again joined by tOSU’s biggest fan Larry Bodnovich and the man who’s been bringing you the Ducktracker all season long, Michael Princip, in a weekly look at some fun Ohio State University and University of Oregon factoids, uni histories and other fun stuff. Larry, of course, will be tackling the Buckeyes, and Michael will handle the Ducks.
Per custom, Larry will be starting off the show, so here’s Mr. Bodnovich:
In the 1960’s Ohio State had more helmet changes than any decade ever. Starting with the gray padded helmets in 1960. The padding did not go all the way to the back in 1961. The silver and red padding in 1962-63. Slight changes the following years. 1966-67 went with red helmets. 1967 first Buckeyes used. 1968 silver helmet used with a couple of gray ones.
Ohio State played Duke September 26, 1959. Duke had the padded helmets. 3 weeks later vs Purdue at least 1 Buckeye helmet had padding. See the 1st b&w pic. Woody Hayes later adopted those in 1960.
The helmets changed a little each year. Helmet Hut describes the manufacturers for the next few years.
1961 Helmet. 1960 and 61 helmets were mostly all gray with red padding. 1962 on were mostly silver with red padding.
1964 or 65 helmet.
1966 went to the red helmet.
1967 Buckeyes first used as award decal on red helmet.
1968 went to the silver helmet. Jim Otis still used a padded one
A handful of Buckeyes wore gray helmets in 1968.
Here is the 1960’s Buckeye helmet album.
Thank you Larry. Once again, great stuff.
We next move on to Michael. As always, Michael’s contribution to this portion of the column isn’t so much his words, but his expertise and creativity in updating his “Oregon Rose Bowl” history page. He’s updated that page even further with some wonderful vintage Ducks/Webfoots uniform history.
1920s Last Worn Blue & Yellow Jersey: Former UO archivist, Keith Richard, speculates that this jersey in the archives is from the 1920s. It would have been from one of the last years before the Ducks switched to green and yellow by vote of the student body, which wanted the team to abide by the official school colors.
1899 Oregon Ducks/Webfoots: The Ducks went 3-2-1, including a 38-0 win over the Beavers. Eugene fans will recognize this photo as the one used for the Billboard near Ferry Street bridge (2003).
1915 Ducks – Orville Monteith: Orville played from 1914 to 1916, when the Ducks still wore blue and yellow uniforms. In 1916 the Ducks went 7-0-1, beating Pennsylvania 14-0 in the Rose Bowl.
1945 Ducks – Yellow Eared ‘8 Strap’ Style Helmet: In 1939, it was mandatory that all NCAA football players be required to wear helmets. Thus, the creative color schemes of yellow and green upon the Duck heads began. Here, Bob Reynolds (left) and Robert Koch (right) wear the ones that started it all, the eight strap style leather helmet with green primarily throughout and yellow ears.
1948: Ducks Green Leather/White & Yellow(@ times)Hard Cap
I’ve updated the Duck’s Rose Bowl page.
And thank you Michael! Be sure to spend a good amount of time checking out that Rose Bowl Uniform history. Mr. Princip has added a lot of updates and factoids.
Truly outstanding work again, gentlemen. Be sure to join us on New Year’s Day, when Larry and Michael will be joining me for a full-blown Bucks vs. Ducks Rose Bowl Feature.
~~~~~~~~~~

And on that note, I conclude my 2009 postings. Thanks to Paul and all of those with whom I have collaborated over the past 52 weekends, and to all you fine readers for your support. It’s been a fun ride so far. I’ll be back with you all as we ring in the New Year of 2010.

Everybody have a great Sunday and a fantastic remainder of 2009. Cheers!

    Also, I loved the Pitt-UNC matchup, but Marshall’s light green pants stole the day yesterday

    I don’t know why Corvette has had the same basic lines for years and years and years. So boring. Why don’t they do something updated and cool? Y’know, go to a silhouette more like a Mini Cooper, maybe. Just cuz something been done for long time doesn’t mean it couldn’t stand an upgrade.

    On the other hand, when the underlying technology changes, the same old design doesn’t always work very well.

    1. Nice touch having a Tim Robbins theme after he & Susan Sarandon just split.

    2. Gee – I think the Vette looks different from the first ones in the Fifties thru now, they got longer for awhile – you want them to look like what?

    3. I guess it is a mistake being born a Bronx Yankee fan – do people think we’re supposed to turn our back on our home town team? do they do that?

    Said this yesterday, and it bears repeating.
    In all the big four (NBA, NHL, MLB and NFL) only the Red Wings, Maple Leafs, Jets and Colts wear one-color-and-white. While some may find that “boring” that’s a unique distinction that probably deserves preserving.

    Unless, of course, we think riding the current bandwagon is the only way to a great uniform.

    Change is fine, if it’s for the better. With uniforms, it typically isn’t. It has mostly lead to bad designs. Really bad.
there really never is a good reason to change, is there?
when it’s change for the sake of change, no

    when ‘technology’ (in the case of a sports car) changes, then yes, and form should follow function

    when ‘technology’ (in the case of a shirt) changes…really…aren’t we just reinventing the wheel? are the jags and g-men really playing soooo much better in their fancy new jerseys? or the teams outfitted in the pro combat gear? no…it’s not new and improved, it’s just new…and they’re feeding everyone a line about how much better the technology is…which people are buying hook, line and sinker

    that’s change for the sake of change

    fixed in the main article (sorry mike)

    And you keep making YOUR same point, The Jeff: NFL teams should dress like high school teams from West Virginia coal mining towns because that’s what happens to be “in” right now.

    Change isn’t always bad. If a team is going through a long period of sucking, and has a history of changing its unis, yeah, change things up. Might breathe some new life and energy into things…and stimulate fan interest, too.

    But, last time I checked the Colts were one of the NFL’s truly storied franchises with few uni changes (some farting around with silver and royal pants, but that’s about it), had won arguably THE benchmark game in NFL history in the unis they still wear today and currently are, lemme see, oh yeah, unbeaten…

    So, thinking they’re due for a change is right up there with musing about “What if the Romulans and Klingons switched styles?”

    And before you go “You’re a stodgy old fart” on me, remember I have repeatedly said I LIKE the Broncos unis, and the Rams, and the Seahawks, and the original Ravens, and the Patriots, and the Eagles black-over-green, and West Virginia’s monochromes, and the Gophers all-athletic gold…etc., etc., etc.

    That all depends on perspective doesn’t it? The Bengals switch to tiger stripes in 1981 was good. Their switch to the current uniform, not so much. I thought the Bucs switch to pewter was a huge improvement over the orange uniforms. The Bills current uniforms suck, we all seem to agree on that – but if they wear them for another 25 years do they suddenly become “classic”?. The idea that a team shouldn’t change just because they’ve worn the same thing for 30 years is just… ugh.

    ok…got it

    Santino, nice job on the Colts tweak, only part I didn’t care for was the small horseshoe on the shirt, kinda disturbs the negative space between collar and numbers and almost looks like a necklace or something hanging off the collar…

    No coincidence that these are four of my favorite unis. I’m a big hockey fan and Detroit has always been my favorite jersey with Toronto not far behind. The Wings still manage to look good despite the hideous Reebok template, while the Leafs Reebok version took a big nosedive when they removed any kind of waist striping, looks too much like a practice jersey now…

    The Jeff said…

    “The idea that a team shouldn’t change just because they’ve worn the same thing for 30 years is just… ugh.”

    You saying I said that? Never said that, never would. Not if the team has sustained a certain excellence (Colts, Red Wings, ‘Bama, Michigan, Penn State and others).

    A uni that says “consistent winner” is a good thing. Now the Indians, for example, would have been stupid to stay the same for the las 20 or 30 years. That would have been a uni that says “perenially struggling”.

    The Raiders, on the oher hand, are sort of on the cusp these days. They either need to get better fast, or they probably could stand a change…but I think their fans would revolt (having been to a Raider game, I’m almost sure of it, lol).

    I’ll admit the Colts don’t need a change now since they are at the top of the league. But that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about tweaking them. Manning isn’t going to play forever, and we must admit that the shoulder “loops” aren’t exactly working very well on the new stretchy jerseys.

    As for the Raiders, as long as the colors remained silver & black, I don’t think there’d be any more revolting than usual. The fans already use variants of the logo involving skulls instead of the clean cut pirate guy.

    The Hockey News’ “Greatest Jerseys of All Time” special issue was mentioned here recently.

    Great publication, but man did they drop the ball on one item. Page 93 has “defunct jerseys” and they show the Colorado Rockies, Minnesota North Stars, Quebec Nordiques and Atlanta Flames – all of whom merely moved the franchise elsewhere. How could they not include a true defunct team like the Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals/Cleveland Barons franchise and any of their great jerseys? Or the forerunner to the Rockies/Devils, the Kansas City Scouts?

    “we must admit that the shoulder ‘loops’ aren’t exactly working very well on the new stretchy jerseys.”

    You’re buying the company line there.
    Computers devise the patterns, they could design a pattern to accomodate the loops, if they were told to do so.

    We know it’s possible; Nike did it for Cornell in ’08. Granted, not the same wonder fabric, but Reebok ought to be able to figure out such complex “problem”. If, indeed, they really wanted to. But then we couldn’t tell it was their new, modern jersey, now could we. So it’s marketing, pure and simple…not a technological impossibility.

    The Seals/Barons merged with the North Stars who became the Dallas Stars, and the Scouts/Rockies became the Devils.

    Technically, neither team is defunct either.

    Lotta knotty problems in that discussion, yes. Technically, I supppose, the teams ARE defunct, but the franchises remain. I think it’s fair to call the St. Louis Browns “defunct”. Likewise the North Stars or Buffalo Braves, or, yes, two different Washington Senators.

    The franchise is the business. The teams are what take the field, ice, court, et al.

    But, then again, the “Dodgers” and “Giants” have remained. And “Whalers” repped two different cities.

    So what is defunct? Changing nickname without moving. Moving but keeping nickname? Moving AND changing nickhame? Is conFOOSing, no?

    But it does seem like the Hockey News was a tad inconsistent with their definition.
”we must admit that the shoulder ‘loops’ aren’t exactly working very well on the new stretchy jerseys.”

    —Ricko
I’m not buying that logic just yet. Mostly because Reebok is being very quiet about it. That probably means that all the kinks aren’t worked out and this isn’t a “look our different jerseys” type ploy. It could end up that way, but at this point I’d say it’s not. Also, because there isn’t a lot of information about the new cuts maybe they haven’t been able to figure out the seam patterns yet, maybe there’s wear patterns on the fabric that are different than other fabrics, or maybe the stretch causes stress in different places. There are a plethora of things that could be the reason for the craptacular seam patterns. Don’t damn them because it doesn’t fall in line with previous types…wait until the information is out then damn them all to hades!

    Ricko is right – the manufacturers can make the Colts loops work if they wanted too.

The concepts and tweaks are the sweet candy of this blog, along with classic color photos of the sports I love. A nice break from discussing the minutiae of green dots, chin strap brands and discussions of logo creep and the evil corporations.
    Hell, Phil devoted a whole blog to messing with the classics. For Ricko, the effect is to reiterate that the classics don’t need messing with – for The Jeff and others its a glimpse of what could be.

    Yeah, I mentioned the Scouts/Rockies became the Devils, weren’t saying that they were defunct. But I’d hardly call the Barons/N.Stars scenario a “merger” as it didn’t create a new entity for either team; the Barons essentially folded and Minnesota claimed a handful of their players, from taking a quick look at the roster: Macadam, Fidler, Jean Potvin, Greg Smith and goalies Meloche and Edwards.

    And frankly, the “ridiculous jersey cuts” and what-not that we dissect ad nauseum aren’t necessarily something the average fan would even notice. He would probably see a picture of Peyton next to one of Johnny U and say “yep… same uniforms”. WE notice the differences but we’ve already established the fact that we are NOT average fans.

    Redskins? Now there’s a team that, given their decade-long Daniel-driven debacle, needs to (uni-wise) either go back to their Super Bowl era look…meaning white shoes and no, repeat no, monochrome and no leotard looks…or start over altogether.

    But, please, don’t crap out and go BFBS. Too easy, and WAY too trite. Although, coming to the table 10 years late would be just about their speed these days.

    And I LIKE Redskins…going back to Eddie LeBaron, for pete’s sake.

    Yeah, speaking of, our old Scout board has vanished! I’m actually in the process of making a White Sox uniform post-1994 Okkonen-style project thanks to a lot of old images being added to the ‘net. I’m seeing stuff I totally forgot about. Kinda hard to judge unis if you stick to the radio broadcasts, though, init? ;)

    —Ricko
Depends on the announcer. Actually, in Cleveland (don’t know if they still do it, ’cause I can’t listen to those guys too much) they would describe the colors and details of the teams’ unis. It was even sponsored by Cintas Uniforms.

    That reminds me – on Christmas Eve I was driving to my parents’ house when I saw a van with UNIFORM as the license plate. Turned out to be for a uniform supply store in Cuyahoga Falls. Wish I could’ve gotten a picture, but there wasn’t a chance to stop and I don’t think my phone camera was good enough to take the shot.

    I failed today’s quiz big time. Only saw five of the movies and only knew one quote.

    Anyway, Santino, I’m glad I got to see your Colts tweak, but I’d stick with what they have.

    Andrew, I think the Jags idea is better without the orange, but I’d wear your uni (liked your Bills tweak, too).

    Caleb, the idea of the blue helmet with silver lion intrigues me, but save the black for the Panthers.

    Speaking of the Panthers, I remember those Starting Lineup figures. Rae Carruth, Kevin Greene and Kerry Collins – what wildly diverging paths y’all have taken.

    Panthers could carve out something of a unique place in NFL unis simply by either…

    1. Going to black helmets and losing the blue jerseys, or…
    2. Going to blue helmets and losing the black jerseys.

    That way the silver pants at home and white on the road would still work just fine.

    —Ricko

    With regard to Ohio State tinkering with unis there for a while in ’60s…

    Football technology changed far more between about 1950 and 1965 than any other period in the game’s history, most specifically with helmets, faceguards and padding. That meant a lot of messing about with headgear by a lot of teams during that era.

    Why? One word.

    Plastic.

    I think you got that mixed up.

    Black helmet, black jersey, silver pants = 90’s Falcons.

    Blue helmet, blue jersey, silver pants = Giants in pastels

    Unique would be a black helmet with a blue jersey, or a blue helmet & black jersey, both with the silver pants of course.

    Thanks JimV19. When I thought about it,I was suprised at how many changes Ohio State did make in the late 1950’s-60’s.

    Ricko got it right in there was a lot of tinkering overall in the 50’s and 60’s

    One of my all time favorite football movies is “The Freshman” with Harold Lloyd. A silent movie with obviously more sight gags than memorable lines.

    “Horsefeathers” is a favorite too.When I was a kid and watching the old Marx Brothers or Threes Stooges and Lil Rascals and even Popeye football scenes all planted that seed of interest I have in old football uniforms,pictures,film clips.

    Panthers’ blue isn’t Giants’ blue at all, any more than Bears’ blue is Giants’ blue. And I’d say having red or not having it is a prominent visual difference.

    Falcons also have a red jersey (see today’s highlights); I was suggesting Panthers stick to only black…and I’m also pretty sure the ’90s Falcons aren’t playing anymore. And again, red is huge visual difference.

    Was thinking that the Panther’s style shoulder loops and pants “V” are hugely distinctive, and with their own brand of blue would give them something of a unique look.

    Black helmet, odd-blue jersey, light pants is pretty much the Jags, isn’t it? Because those two teams came into the league one after another didn’t think would be good for them to look too much alike.

    The blue helmet is probably the better idea. With blue jerseys would be sort of like the Lions, but with blue helmets, and those prominent shoulder loops making the difference noticeable almost instantly. Not to mention Carolina’s whole affection for blue thing.

    Blue helmet with black jersey? Yeah, that one would work, definitely.

    Realistically, most anything will look vaguely like something someone else wears, or has worn somewhere along the line. The difference will be in the details.

    I suppose some could say Broncos’ and Bears’ homes are alike, too. Until you look at the details.

    Splitting hairs could say black dominates the Panthers version, but what you’re really touching on is my overall thoughts on the Panthers.

    At the beginning, looked some kind of blue-added version of the Raiders. Then added the blue jersey and looked like some goofy version of the Lions.

    So, given that teams are slow to make huge changes…especially to the only uni they’ve ever worn…I figured changing the helmet color might at least separate them from the Raiders and Lions.

    Know what I mean?

    We went around on that this week, the Yankees team colors being listed as “navy and white”. I tend to include them, gray roads being a rule-mandated generic (pretty much), but didn’t want to get the discussion started again.

    Then the subject of Yankee logo (with features a helluva lot of red) came up and how it’s on the jackets they DO wear on the field…and we never came to any kind of accord.

    But, yeah, again, I say they’re in, was just avoiding the worm can, lol.

    Figured you were thining about that red in the logo. Maybe those red Yankee caps aren’t so odd after all, if red is a team color by viture of the logo.

    My dad was a longtime Steeler fan so I liked them as young kid. The early 1960’s. But as I got older my Ohio pride led me to root for the Browns.

    So I too was not happy the Steelers pulled out the win. Sure were a lot of flags on Ravens especially during big plays. That dropped TD did not help.

    I liked the Steelers when they came out of nowhere in 1972, and Irsay started the Colts down a bad road. By 1975 the Colts were good again in the Bert Jones era, and Pittsburgh provided the roadblock.
    In 1996- the 8 gazillion former PA residents in MD tried to take over our stadium. The Ravens’ organization and their fans have done a great job making the rivalry not one-sided, although Pitt has an upper hand in the big picture.
    It’s the best rivalry in football, one of the best in all of sports. Steelers ownership is classy, Tomlin is a great coach, Roethlesberger is a beast – you need to wrap up his body and BOTH arms to stop him. The MD Steeler fan contingent is still huge, still annoying.
    So I’ll kepp on hatin’

    Um, she was right. Disco emphasized beat, rhythm, the dancefloor, and black cultural values over songwriting, melody, musicianship (at least as traditionally defined at the time), and white cultural values. Today’s pop music scene is rooted almost completely in the blueprint disco set down. Rock and roll (i.e., white people playing guitars) is largely a wan afterthought.

    1. The BCS System and the spreading out of the bowl games has pretty much neutered college football’s longstanding hold on New Year’s Day, leaving it wide open for someone else to claim.

    I guess I didn’t make this quite clear, she was talking about the Village People/KC & the Sunshine Band/Donna Summer sound…and the whole “disco scene” (the “Saturday Night Fever” model) staying around forever, being the dominant music and fashion style until, apparently, the end of time.

    But I gotta say, having been to “clubs” long before even the Beach Boys and The Beatles were around, the underlying foundation of the music was there long before even those guys (“emphasized beat, rhythm, the dancefloor, and black cultural values”–why you think my parents’ generation, the WWII crowd, was so aghast about this horrific new “rock n’ roll” stuff?).

    Now, when you say disco led to less real craftsmanship in songwriting and performing, and turned popular music away from its true rock n’roll roots…I’ll definitely agree.

    five years from now? when we’re up to winter classic 8 (if it makes it that far)?

    wasn’t the WC supposed to be the big event after five years (or 2 years hence)?

    despite the fact that 300,000 bostonians need an excuse to keep drinking all new years day, you’re never gonna replace the rose bowl as THE event of new years day…especially this year, when for once USC isn’t in the damn thing

    and about that five year thing — you may be right, because that’s when espn’s contract runs out and maybe they’ll finally institute a playoff system — in which case, even MORE interest will be on the bowls, and they’d likely use NYD for the semi finals, with the final to be played approximately one week later (or more, if too close to a weekend)…the NFL will have sat/sun, and the BCS championship can be a huge, weeknight (maybe a thursday???) in primetime

    no…i bet this year’s numbers for the WC are down from last, and the novelty will wear off faster than usain bolt’s workday

    WTF??

    Songwriting,melody and musicianship live on. I know lots of kids, including my daughters who are into classic pop, classic rock, standards and showtunes both from a listening and performing standpoint. Listening to lazy music on the radio or because itunes tells them to is for lazy kids who won’t shape music.

    “the rose is, and will always, be king of NYD”

    And I said that.

    Ratings? All depends on how much of a “habit” it becomes for people. Get up, watch some outdoor hockey (especially if bowls opposite it are relatively meaningless), then pick up the higher profile games, including the Rose Bowl, later.

    Your authoritative “no” reminded me a bit of all those people who said this new American Football League would fall flat on its ass.

    That’s why I said “wait.” This probably is a pivotal year for the WC, yes. But it doesn’t need to do Rose Bowl numbers to be successful. It just has to be more profitable for NBC (including any measurable change in subsequent NHL ratings) than whatever other programming it might stick in that time slot.

    It may become nothing more than what people traditionally watch when they get up, before they get together with others to watch football. That alone could generate enough numbers to make it worth continuing. And be called “successful” and a “traditon” of New Year’s Day. I’m just saying I think it’s too early to write it off as a gimmick.

    Or, it also may be onlyo NBC’s way of trying to boost it’s NHL ratings. At the end of that contract, and absent a replacement deal with CBS, ABC, Fox or ESPN, the WC could die real fast.

    Right now, though, as a new event, it’s off to a helluva good start. And it seems to be headed in the right direction. The bell curve is still heading up. Have to see if it continues. I think it will, and least enough to keep it going to see how entrenched it does, or doesn’t, become.

    Ricko…

    As much as I like your effort with ‘fixing’ the Panthers, your suggestion of a blue helmet will NEVER happen. One of the main reasons they chose the blue shade they did was that it was a mix of the UNC and Duke blues, so they wouldn’t create a rift in the collegiate fanbases in the state and alienate either one of them or the NC State crowd (or S. Carolina or Clemson for that fact). If they did that, they’d look way too much like UNC and that is something they’d never OK.

    Bright Royal vs Bright Orange would pop in high def, but would be a spot of bother for those watching on their 5″ b&w campsite/power outage tv’s – the ones you crank for power if the 12 D cells are dead.

    I don’t think those TVs even work anymore, thanks to the switchover to digital broadcasts.

    But I love the sound of The Jeff Bowl. (sponsored by Pepsi and Cheetos, of course)

How about the blue helmet with a Duke blue jersey? Just change the black to Duke blue.

    Meanwhile – nothing new with the Skins and Cowpokes… but you know what this is a near-perfect uni game. One team in white jerseys with dark pants – in warm shades of burgundy and gold. Opposed by the ice-cool Dallas unis in a dark blue(I only call it Navy if it’s as dark as the Yankees’ caps or the pants I wear to the office.)and trimmed out with sweet silver helmets and silver pants.
    Nothing about Washington’s gear looks anything like the Dallas gear. No white helmets, no white over white for those that don’t care for that stuff.

    I think that this rivalry approaches Uni-perfection, much like TOSU and Michigan.

    Raiders in black vs Chiefs in red pants is another great one.

    Sorry, Ricko, if I wasn’t out partying with the family I would have played the quiz. Only knew one quote, and it would have taken all day to luck into a few others. Now if you would have included Caddyshack I would have gotten that one…

    Sonofabitch – gotta upgrade the emergency TV. Nice to watch the local news when blizzards or hurricanes knock the power out… Live, local and latebreaking.

    I know the background. Moment I finished it I thought, “Nope, too much like the Tarheels.” Was just looking for simplest way to separate Panthers from Lions and Raiders. Wasn’t saying was practical, just was one way with the least amount of change.

    I never think any of my “edits” can happen. Most of the time, they’re couched (at least in my head)in the notion that “too bad this simple change can’t be implemented,” because there’s usually some reason I know very well it’s impossible.

    The Redskins lost to Dallas twice this year, 7-6 and 17-0.

    They have never gone without a TD in 2 straight games against Dallas, ever. Since 1960.

    See you in the postseason, Danny, you little twerp.

    PS

    After 4 1/2 hrs of watching NBC, I can flatly guarantee that the NHL Winter Classic is sponsored by Bridgestone.

    When the season started, who would have thought that the Bengals/Jets would be the final Sunday night game?

    And why are the Jets closing out Giants Stadium? Shouldn’t the Giants have been home next week instead?

    I certainly hope she knew the guy, and it wasn’t some sort of “we made the playoffs” romance.

    Although I’ll wager a fair amount of Wisconsin kids likely have been conceived under such circumstances.

    —Ricko

    Let me rephrase that.
    A fair amount of Wisconson families have one more kid than they planned, due to such circumstances. That’s what I should have said.

    Wonder how many of those kids are named Brett, and how many of them want to change their names now…

    Let’s see, the Steelers have won three Super Bowls in the white on yellow unis, three in the black on yellow, and lost one in the black on yellow. How about they go for the next one in the throwbacks?
    link

    I’m liking that uni (and the way it contrasts with the Ravens) more and more each day.

    Don’t think they’ll get a playoff spot this year, though. Oh well.
Don’t think they’ll get a playoff spot this year, though. Oh well.
that’s about all that is making me feel any less pain right now…

    in order for pittsburgh to get in: they need a win AND need help to make the playoffs — their best way of getting in would be if the following three things happen: (1) they win, (2) houston loses to new england, and (3) either baltimore or the jets lose their games

    there is an alternate scenario where pittsburgh and houston can both make it, but denver, baltimore, and the jets would all have to lose

    looks like the last two super bowl champs will be watching the playoffs from home

    And the three hags in that picture mugged them and stole their tickets? So sad…

    I keed! I keed! The girl in front of me for the season opener at Lambeau was absolutely gorgeous. Although, she was probably an import.
