What’s that little stitching mark underneath the Islanders crest on Tim Jackman’s jersey? Reader John Muir explains:
Jackman had some trouble with his jersey earlier this year. Even though his rear tie-down was fastened, his jersey came up over his head during a fight. So during the first intermission, Islanders equipment manager Scott Boggs contacted the league and asked if he could affix a front tie-down to Jackman’s jersey. The league agreed and the modification was ready in time for the second period. Jackman explains all of this in this video clip.
Fascinating. Do other players out there have front tie-downs?

Uni Watch News Ticker: Oregon and Oregon State will be wearing helmet decals tonight in support of soldiers in the Oregon National Guard’s 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Details here and here (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Are the Canucks preparing to scrap the Orca logo? Could be (with thanks to John Muir). ”¦ Here’s a shot from the 1979 Syracuse/Penn State game. Note the inconsistent pants striping on the Syracuse players (with thanks to Rick DiRubbo). ”¦ Oh man, if only I had bought this building (way to torture me, Kirsten). ”¦ Did you know Tab was briefly made with sugar? James Huening found that can at this soda web site, which also features, among other things, an RC can featuring Dave Parker wearing his cap backwards (presumably because they didn’t have permission to use the Pirates logo). ”¦ Here’s another shot of Paul Hornung wearing a plastic faceguard on a leather helmet (with thanks to Nathan Haas). ”¦ Great pics of the Heilwood Bloomer Girls, a 1919 women’s baseball team from western Pennsylvania, here (with thanks to Roscoe Speers). ”¦ New logo set for the 2014 Winter Olympics (with thanks to Chris Ashworth). ”¦ Andy Moursund has added another 21 images to his set of amazing vintage program covers. ”¦ Ballpark Digest has chosen two “logos of the year” — one of which I Iove, one of which I hate. I’m sure you can guess which is which (with thanks to Todd Vaught). ”¦ Hey look, there’s a design on the bottom of the MLB championship trophy (good spot by Ed Lafayette). ”¦ Greg Michelena notes that Marian Gaborik has his nickname and uni number on his gloves. ”¦
I have an RC can with Al Oliver, but I don’t know if the hat was turned around backward. I can tell you those cans were endorsed by MLBPA, but not MLB because I also have cans of Cesar Cedeno and J.R. Richard without Astros logos.
John Erskine of the Capitals wears a front tie down on his jersey (sweater) so it will not be pulled up during fights.
Not uni-related, but baseball-related typo in link is high-laire.
The Braves’ signing of Billy Wagner has a uni-related twist. Wagner will wear #13 next year, and so this means a number change for CF Nate McClouth.

As a Fort Wayne native … congrats to the Tin Caps for their award, it’s well-deserved.
Great core logo design (no pun intended). Carried it through really well across everything: ballpark, letterhead, signage, etc.
Actually, the worst visual interpretation are the uniforms, with their goofy type/numeral treatment (you can see everything in the link to SkyDesign’s site). Well done, just not a fan of the unis.

Man, that prohibition era bowling alley is fantastic. I’m especially fond of the poles between the lanes.
Great stuff.
Probably just me, but I think the soda web site link may warrant one of those “drop all the work you’re doing” lines.
Okay…Not to pat myself on the back, but if Tyler Kepner needs help as an investigative journalist…I’m his man.
Remember the Rahway helmet mystery from yesterday?
Giovanni Smith had 2010 on the left side of his helmet, his projected graduation date.
On the right side, all we could see were the numerals 3 and 2.
According to coach Louis Romeo, there was also a 7, thus completing the area code 732 ala Reggie Bush and his shout out to 619.

Gotcha. I was paying zero attention to the content of the article and looking only for a misspelled word. Glad I wasn’t alone in missing it. That is a pretty bad typo.
I was the Texans v. Titans Monday Night Football game a few weeks ago, and seeing all of the Oilers throwback gear made me wonder: How does Bud Adams have the right to ‘retire’ the old Houston Oilers colors? I know that he owns the name, but the colors were taken from the city flag of Houston. Is there something having to do with trademark law that I just do not understand?
I won’t miss the Canucks orca logo (if it, in fact, goes). But they would not be returning to the classic stick-in-rink logo because that logo no longer exists.
They have some modern, bastardized replica now, some cheap, tawdry imitation. That is not classic. No, that is stupid.
How did the balls come back to the bowlers in that Queens basement?
The lanes show I think 46 boards, while a tenpin lane will have 39 boards. I wonder if these lanes are a bit fatter than today’s standards, or skinnier boards were used? Might be a nightmare to fix those holes, as finding just regular sized bowling lane boards aren’t something you go pick up at the local hardware store…

Kind of like how the Sabres, who entered the league the same year, will someday hopefully soon ditch the banana slug and be left with their “modern” blurrified version of the original logo.
The Fort Wayne Tincaps logo/mascot looks like one of the “funny Face” drink mix characters from the late 60’s, early 70’s (goofy grape, choo-choo cherry, lefty lemon-lime, etc.)

I don’t think Parker’s hat is backwards. More likely the logo was airbrushed out. If you look closely, there appears to be a brim. It’s just hard to see because the picture was taken straight on.
That bowling alley is a FIND! Time to start checking out real estate while the market is low.
I have Garry Maddox and Reggie Jackson on the RC cans. No hat logos. There may be a bunch more in dear old Mom’s attic.

Typically, no. There would be a rail just for returning balls, which would return the balls to a rack. It’d be awkward to go up to the foul line each time and pick up your ball, and what if you weren’t there to catch your return ball?
There must’ve been a removal of something. I mean, there’s no ball rack…

I could be wrong, but I think that the colors are part of the trademark. Basically the whole team package – name, colors and logo all go together as a single entity.
Regardless, since the Titans still use the same shade of blue, it’d be kinda lame for the Texans to wear it too.

Sigh. Long, boring story. Interestingly, we were each asked to submit an explanation for our draft, defending our choices, etc. I did so, but it was not published or, apparently, considered. Here it is:
I kicked some serious draft ass, if I do say so myself.
1st Round — Gravy: The sleeper of the entire draft. Almost anyone else’s pick is worthless without it. Turkey? No good without gravy. Stuffing? Ditto. Mashed potatoes? Ditto-ditto. And even things that are *okay* without gravy are even *better* WITH gravy: vegetables, cornbread, ham, etc., etc. It’s like a legal steroid: total performance enhancement. Gravy for the win.
2nd Round — Carcass: The gift that keeps on giving. When it looks like everything is done, finished, gone, finito — even the leftovers — I can make turkey soup. I can make turkey stock (which I can use to make still more things). Plus I can gnaw on some bones. Not glamorous but soooooo valuable.
3rd Round — Turkey TV Dinner: When everyone else has maxed out their salary cap on their first two picks, who’s gonna be able to afford that third-rounder? Me, that’s who.
Performance, endurance, cost control. You can start engraving my name on the trophy now, thanks.

The guy standing on top was the guy who sent the balls back. See he has a rail to his left and to his right. He sends the ball down the appropriate rail, and the balls end up on a rack back near the settee.

Does not surprise me that the Canucks are going to change logos again. I visited the team store at the arena in Vancouver when my daughter had to go there for medical tests. The only item I could find there in my size (XXL) was a spring jacket with the 3rd jersey logo on it. When I asked the sale associate there if there was any merchandise with the present orca logo, she told me most Canuck fans do not like it. So a logo change would not surprise me in the least.

From yesterday:
None of the discussion of basketball at the Civic Arena mentioned pro basketball.
There were actually regular season NBA games played there; I remember seeing ads for one-offs in the mid ’60s, then the 76ers played six games there in 1966-67 and 1972-73. The first basketball game I ever saw included Wilt Chamberlain when the Knicks beat Phila in January of 1967. (I also saw the Sixers lose to Cleveland in double overtime in 1973, so I’m rooting for the Nets to win more than 9 games.) Since then, there have been several exhibitions, although the last couple were at Pitt.
I didn’t get to see Connie Hawkins and the ABA Champion Pipers in 1967-68, but when they moved back without Hawkins for 1969-70, I would go occasionally and be a part of very small crowds. In the summer of 1970, they changed their name to the Condors, and in 1971-72, link were pretty nice. The team’s dismal on-count performance matched their dismal attendance, though, and they folded in 1972.
During this decade, there was a new ABA team called the Xplosion. The crowd at the one game I attended reminded me of the original ABA, but the basketball wasn’t nearly as good.

And if he wasn’t, who was?

apologies to ricko’s head exploding in advance, but this debate might be like the hard to prove colour of the bucking helmet bronko, because i see the seam, but i also see the fro being cut off at the brim line. tough call on this one. my vote is that the hat is actually sideways, the brim was then airbrushed out causing the truncated afro, and then what appears to be a seam line is in fact a “pirate parrot pleat” caused by the cobra cutting lines with a razor blade and leaving a trail of drool and snot. thank corn one of us is of sound mind, mystery solved.
There is no way that Notre Dame and Paul Hornung wrote leather helmets in the 1950’s.
Yes they did wear leather helmets. EVERY photo of Hornung QB’ing the Irish had him wearing the Leather Tan/Beige helmet with Black “cross-strap” striping across the top of the helmet.
However, the helmet seen in the College Hall of Fame photo appears to be a cheap replica. First, I have seen dozens of the MacGregor leather helmets worn by the Irish in that era, and they are much sturdier than thoat shown in the photo. Second, the Irish wore a Tan/Beige version of that helmett with the Black cross striping, not the Old Gold color seen in that photo.
The photo appears to be an attempt at showing what Hornung wore, but I highly doubt that tt is an actual Notre Dame-worn helmet.

I’ll give him the “AD” treatment when he starts holding on to the football all day. Until then, at least with me, he’s keeping his “real” initials.
Now… one guy who I won’t call by his initials (due to a unique circumstance) is LaDanian Tomlinson. People call him LT, and it drives me nuts. There’s 1 LT… and he killed QB’s for the Giants. I use “LDT”. I know some use LT2, and I don’t like that either. He’s not the 2nd LT. Nobody is or will be.

John Brisker was the Condors’ star. Rumor has it he died as a mercenary in Uganda. (When I saw them play the Squires, Charlie Scott was Virginia’s star. If I knew then what I know now, I’d have gone to see Doc and Gervin.)
Bob,
I second your recommendation of “Loose Balls”.

This picture of a supposed Ohio State uniform is floating around on Ohio State boards
I have no idea why or what it means. Looks like home version of the one worn in Michigan game.
link…
wait, what, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! NO NO NO NO NO NO. CORN FUCKING DAMN IT, THAT’S IT, GO FUCKING BLUE!
I don’t buy it. It doesn’t have that crest at the bottom of the collar all the others had.
if they break those out i’ll root for the ducks, i swear it. and i will outright root against the buckeyes from here on out. i am going to ebay to look for scUM gear just in case. i hope you are right that it is a hoax. what was the reaction on the boards, did people like ‘em. not uw peeps, i mean the average joe fan. i don’t read that garbage, uw is 100% of my sports page.
Wait a sec, do those pants have knee pads made into them???
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I believe that this “Ohio State” uni making the rounds may have been a Nike prototype, given the shoulder stitching, and the color gray matching the White jersey ini worn last wek, as well as the store-place PRICE TAG on it, which probably comes from a Nike outlet store. That’s my best guess.
Here’s what else I think about it:
1. It is not that bad a uniform – certainly no worse than the White jersey version. I can see OSU loyalists being ruffled by the innacurracies in the “fauxback” attempt – but all i all it is less offensive than many Nike attempts at innovation.
2. Maybe the prototype was made in anticipation of a color-on-color OSU vs UM matchup that for whatever reason did not come about? That wuld have been neat to see ….
3. I do not believe it was a hoax uni made up by anyone other than Nike, as the dark gray shade would be pretty difficult to match, and the “riflery” stitching on the shoulders is simply too complex to pull off for a one-and-done hoax.

I’ll give him the “AD” treatment when he starts holding on to the football all day. Until then, at least with me, he’s keeping his “real” initials.

just so you know, it has nothing to do with his holding onto the ball…

Adrian Peterson was a hyperactive toddler, ramping up his activity while others his age napped. His dad nicknamed him “All Day,” which was later shortened to A.D.–his nickname today.
Cool. And having said that…he can get that nickname back when he holds on to the ball all day.

I was asking about ND and leather helmets before too. They went to plastic helmets early in the 1940’s and went back to leather until the late 1950’s. I was wondering if the Irish were the last team to wear leather helmets
As Nick talked about the Ohio State uniform picture floating around. It probably was just the prototype for the home version..
The new uni the Buckeyes wore for Michigan was not that bad after I saw them in action. Just could have been better with gray helmet.
And of course way better as a REAL throwback.
I am anxious to watch the Ducks and Beavers game tonight. So the rumor is the Ducks will wear a hybrid throwback.
And from as far as we could figure out 1958 was the last year ND wore leather helmets. From the pictures Ricko posted. and ones I found.

Long ago , my buddies and I went to the Civic Arena for a basketball tourney. One of those with 4 teams. One was UCLA. I think with Sidney Wicks. Or that era. We had seats right by where the players ran out. My one buddy was one of those cray kids. He was ready and willing to go in the UCLA locker room and swipe a UCLA jersey.
He never did though but he was tempted.

A young woman reporter blames the Pittsburgh Pirates’ losing streak on the obscenely abusive manager. While she attempts to learn more about him for her column, he begins hearing the voice of an angel promising him help for the team if he will mend his ways. As he does so, an orphan girl who is a Pirates fan and has been praying for the team begins noticing angels on the ballfield. Sure enough, the Pirates start winning, and McGovern tries to turn his life around. But can he keep his temper long enough for the Pirates to win the NL pennant?
Replace obsecenely abusive manager with idoit general manager who trades away all the talent and you have the modern version.

Yesterday I posted the picture below of my team in green, Notre Dame HS.
link
I didn’t get to answer some questions.
1.) We did win 31-15 as Phil pointed out. We clinched a Class L (the second largest class in the state) play-off berth with the victory. And as a matter of fact, we are playing for the CT state championship Saturday against Pomperaug (Southbury,CT).
2.) #71 is our Right Tackle Dom. He is 6’3″ 315 lbs. So naturally, my 5’8″ 140 lb. frame looks super small.
3.) Notre Dame HS is located in West Haven, CT. Were aren’t across the street from SHU, but rather the University of New Haven.
Here are the ugly ass uniforms of the opponent in red. link
Finally, I can watch Oregon without wanting to vomit dayglo.

Whoops, I meant to say Go Beavers.
And no one’s guessed right. It’s Lafayette and Lehigh.
From the Patriot League web site:
“This year’s Lafayette-Lehigh contest scheduled for Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. at Lafayette’s Fisher Stadium in Easton, Pa. will be the 142nd all-time meeting between the two programs on the gridiron. Princeton and Yale hold the next longest-running series at 128 games.
This series first kicked off on Oct. 25, 1884 in Easton, Pa. For the 17 of the first 18 years, Lafayette and Lehigh faced one another twice a season in a home-and-home series with a third contest being played in 1891 in Wilkes Barre, Pa. Only once during the 122-year run have these teams not faced one another on the gridiron – 1896.”
The throwback jerseys and gold helmets are a good combo. But the pants need to be yellow as well.
Erin Andrews wearing matching purple touque and gloves (Bills are in Candada, so that word just popped into my head). Paul won’t be happy

The whole point of the rivalry promotion was to introduce the pro combat technology for a full launch next year.

a wider spread, due to all the chatter about the first 10, launch of pro combat gear for bowl games.

Yeah, Arkansas is still under contract with Adidas until the end of this academic year. I doubt that those will be the official uniforms for the team next season, when they make the move to Nike.
Really hope they keep the white shoes, instead of going red.
