As I think most of you realize, I frequently hunt for old jerseys on eBay — baseball, mostly, plus some football, basketball, and hockey. Last week, though, I stumbled across this listing (scroll down a bit to see what it is).
Nice, right? So simple, so elemental. Sporty but not stupid. I own one retro cycling jersey, but it’s a throwback reproduction, not a vintage original. After coming across that one eBay listing, however, I started poking around.
It’s an appealing category. Cycling jerseys are basically short-sleeve sweaters, so they’re practical. The vintage ones tend to be made of wool, with chain-stitched detailing. Most of us, myself included, don’t know jackshit about cycling, so there are no issues about supporting the “wrong” team or whatever — you can just find something that looks cool and wear it, the end. If you end up learning something along the way (about cycling, about the sponsor, etc.), so much the better.
I haven’t bought any of these vintage jerseys yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Look how cool some of them are (in some cases you’ll have to scroll down to see the photos):
• I immediately fell in love with the front design on this one — but check out the back design! Definitely would have bid on it if I hadn’t been busy with the ’pox.
• Love the stripe treatment here.
• Too bad this one‘s listed as a kids’ size. Love the circular logos and the diagonal script.
• If you click on the “Enlarge Photo” tab for this one, you can see how thick and textured the chain-stitching is. Damn, it looks like you could use that “C” as a pillow!
• Why do the blue-and-yellow jerseys seem to have the best embroidery?
• Simple, basic, classic.
• Very unusual mod-type logo on the front of this one.
• Did you own a Schwinn bike when you were a kid? Then maybe you’d like this.
• Like the basic cycling jersey template but don’t like all the typography? Try this one.

I know the player with the ball is Rick Barry, and I figure that his “The City” jersey is a current thing, not a throwback. But the rather bizarre and certainly unusual auditorium setting doesn’t explain itself… But here’s a guess: 1976 Bicentennial event, honoring America’s own game (invented by a Canadian)? But I have no confidence in so saying. Shit, when did Barry play? Help, Paul!

Not sure of the story behind the numbers on Rahway HS’ helmets. If you look at the other side of the same kids helmet, he has another number, and its not his uniform number either. link
The school they are playing, Arthur L. Johnson Regional, has a kind of uniform related quirk I remember from playing them back in my HS days. When they would come out for the coin toss, they would wear red berets instead of their helmets. Story was it was because they had a large jewish population, so they needed to cover their heads, so they wore the beret in lieu of a yarmulke. Not sure if that is/was true, but we usually ended up playing them the Friday of Rosh Hashanah, so our school had a half day and we played them at 2:30 in the afternoon so they could obey the “no work after sundown” rule. So it all kind of fit.

I’ve seen the Hockey News special in at least two newsstands on the Amtrak level of Penn Station – it’s superb. And being under MSG, appropriate.
Sadly, Philadelphia Convention Hall (Civic Center) met the wrecking ball a few years ago in the name of “progress”. Halfway through the demolition when the interior was exposed, it was quite painful to drive by.

I picked up one of those acrylic throwback sweaters in Montreal in 2007. A real thing of beauty — mine is a home Habs sweater, looks to be modeled after the mid-1940s.
However, it’s the most static-causing sweater I’ve ever had. You know those electrified metal balls, where if you put your hand on a pair of them, your hair stands up and your physics teacher can touch you with the prongs of a plug and make a light bulb shine? My acrylic Habs sweater is like wearing that. The thing is an electrocution hazard.

I’ve been involved in the design of a number of gymnasium floors an because of that I do take interest in court design, but that Kerrville Tivy High is by far the most beautiful I’ve ever seen!
Lots of franchise bizarreness in the Rick Barry pic:
1) The San Fransico Warriors were originally the Philadelphia Warriors (1946-62) before relocating.
2) Wilt Chamberlain was draft by the (Phila)Warriors in 1959. In 1964 the (SF) Warriors traded him to the Sixers. Barry was drafed with the first pick in ’65.
3) The two teams played in the NBA Finals in ’66-’67. So, in a way, Philadelphia played itself in the finals.
The back design on this one does nothing for me (shrugs).

Those hockey sweaters are great. I have two, and both are different.
My Penguins one is a “Roger Edwards Vintage Sweater,” and has a subtle RBK job on the Vintage washtag on the bottom.
The Maple Leafs one I have is different, because it only has a CCM badge on the lower back of the sweater, like CCM jerseys not too long ago.
Those Seattle Metropolitans sweaters, damn.

As an actual resident of Richmond, I’m conflicted…I hated, hated, HATED the way the Braves (our former team) treated Richmond completely as an afterthought, fielding a team that wore uniforms almost identical to the ones the MLB team wore. That being said, “Flying Squirrels” is exactly the kind of hacky, lowest-common-denominator team name that I’ve come to expect from minor-league ball, a name with all the dignity and staying power of the Macarena. I can’t imagine we’ll be celebrating 20 years of Flying Squirrels baseball in 2030.
On the logos: the cartoony, full-body squirrel is every bit as bad as I feared it would be, and the wordmarks are uninspired but inoffensive. I gotta admit, though, I actually kinda dig the acorn with the “R” on it…I might even wear a cap with that on it!
My guess is the 2010 on the Rahway helmet it just a shout out to the seniors that will be graduating in this June in 2010. Not sure but just my guess.
If you look closely at the Blackhawks’ breezers from last night you’ll notice that they’ve got a shell pulled over their regular breezers. You can see it in this photo by looking at the cuff, where you can see the tip of the normal white/red/white stripes sticking out from underneath the shell. link
Probably they do it so that players can keep their normal breezers for comfort and still have a new look.

Speaking of DIY Snuggies, my GF was once a member of the Texas Longhorn band. I’ve been hoping that a burnt orange Snuggie would come out so that I could sew on the bric-a-brac to make it look like her old link. They make a Texas Longhorn Snuggie, but it has logos all over it.
Naturally, she hates it when I tell people that she was once in the Fightin’ Porter Waggoner Marching Band…

Regarding the Rahway High School helmet mystery:
According to MaxPreps, #3 is Giovanni Smith, a senior captain, slated to graduate in the Spring of 2010.

All of the other players who have visible numbers,are both without helmet decals and are from differing classes.
On November 7th, Mr. Smith did not have decals on the either side of his helmet.

The Blackhawks debuted their throwback alts (which are basically the same as last season’s Winter Classic jersey except that they’re now going with a retro tomahawk on the shoulders) last night.
Technically they’re not throwback tomahawks. Before the unveiled the new jersey, I did a little investigating into the history of the tomahawk patch which I posted in a Blackhawks forum link. Long story short, the Blackhawks tomahawk patch didn’t debut until long after the jerseys on which the new alt is modeled. The tomahawks have had a few changes in color but have always worked within the red/white/green/yellow color scheme. The new ones use the retro color palette, but that palette is completely new to the tomahawk patch. Personally, I think it looks great and particularly love how the beige X’s of the tomahawks stand out from a distance.

I think I had a pair of those wristbands as well, back in the day.
The orange numbers made it tough to tell who was who in ’76….not that many names were worth remembering.

I feel as if I could cut my hand on those Richmond logos. This actually could have been a good idea, but it just seems over-designed.

The Red C, White Shaft, Red blade tomahawk was the first design. Having seen the current alt patches in person the design is identical to the current tomahawk, its just been recolored to look like the 1955 one. Effectively the Hawks are taking serveral elements from their history to create something new. I suppose its similar to what the Bruins did when they switched to the edge system.

Third (sometimes referred to as Sister Lovers, which was supposed to be its original title and was later used for several different reissues of the record) is a doozy of an album. Very dark, very cryptic. Chilton was basically descending into alcoholism while making it, so it’s very different than the first two Big Star LPs. Contains some of his very best work, though. Different sound, but spectacular songs. I have it on CD, so I’ve decided to it’s finally time to part with the vinyl version.

It’s odd how jagged they all are, isn’t it…makes ’em all kinda blend in and look the same. Thing is, I like how the line in the “R” kinda forms a squirrel’s tail, and I think they were going for the same thing with the wordmarks, but it ended up just looking like a band-saw!

Not too tight, not too baggy…just right. And I like the contrast in styles. One’s a classic, the other is snazzy but not over-the-top.

reminds me of my first Penguins game there. I bought some fries, and usually people ask if you want ketchup. When the vendor said, “You want gravy with those?” I thought, oh yeah, I KNOW I’m in Pittsburgh. Now when I get fries and gravy at Eat’NPark, the smell still reminds me of the Civic Arena.

I saw Dejuan Blair win the City Championship with Schenley over Allderidice in his senior year. I think that’s the only basketball I ever saw in the arena. My brother was a pitt student during the days when big games (Georgetown, for one) were held at the arena. I don’t think he really had a feeling about the place for hoops one way or the other. But he didn’t feel entrenched with the Fieldhouse either.

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but when ESPN.com initally used the former 76ers logo (last years gold script) in their feature box of the website.
Before I was able to get a screencap they changed to the current logo.
Looks like the Blackhawks aren’t the only ones wearing those jerseys…

Student equipment manager at YSU cool. I had asked Carmen Cascese (sp) for some Ys to make myself a replica full sized Youngstown State helmet. I used a Chiefs replica helmet and put the Ys on for my own YSU helmet. I am a Youngstown State graduate.

Betcha a nickel the whole thing was an artwork and not a font. Based on a font, maybe, but not a font.
From that era (and before) as often as not, that was the case.
Yes, you can tell your students people actually drew words once upon a time. One my dad’s former partners was phenomenal. A few of the high-profile corporate wordmarks he lettered brush-in-hand maybe 50 years ago are still in use hereabouts.

okay ryco, i typed this once before and lost it, so let’s try again…
please ignore the cats, the in process bobbles, the general studio mess, but here is my schwinn varsity next to my varsity jacket(didn’t realize until after i took the shot, ha). i love the classic schwinn font, and forks. gota love that gearshift that would be lost in a monogear nightmare, and check out the original grip tape ryco. speaking of original, yup the 73 tires are on there too, so is the seat. no sack-saving hole in the later either, it’s a hard core nut-buster. speaking of hard core, my favourite feature certifies that it is a chicago union made 800 pound steel tank capable of rolling over chicago streets, vaaaroooom. too bad my license expired in ’76.

2 problems…
1. the chargers receiver “PRINCE” is wearing 16… no chargers player has worn/has been allowed to wear 16 since Ryan Leaf, and im surprised they managed to get a 16 chargers jersey made.
2. the patriots are wearing silver pants with the white jerseys, which i dont remember happening with the current uniforms.

Going back to the Blackhawks tomahawk discussion, when I was in college I use to go watch the Saginaw Hawks of the IHL and they had the tomahawks over the letter S. I could not find a picture on the internet but I think I have a picture from back then in my archives, I will look and see if I can find it.

A few days back I e-mailed the Bills’ uni head office and explained why this would be a great time to start looking for a more traditional yet modern look to those horrible looking uni’s they currently sport, they responded “we are looking in a new direction in all cases of the Bills’ franchise including uniforms” They went on to say they are open for public creativity regarding their uni’s.
