Today is the 35th anniversary of a seminal sports event: the Rumble in the Jungle, which pitted George Foreman against Muhummad Ali in Kinshasa, Zaire. And No Mas honcho Chris Isenberg is marking the occasion with some seriously gorgeous video animation.
Some quick background: Most of you probably think of No Mas as a T-shirt brand, but it’s actually a multi-faceted media project — a project that was born out of Isenberg’s fascination with Ali. That fascination eventually blossomed into Isenberg becoming an official Ali licensee (you can read more about the unusual route he took to that destination here), and he’s used that connection to commission three short animations to commemorate the Rumble anniversary.
The first one, called Zaire, is by watercolorist David Rathman and is sort of a gray-wash time capsule that juxtaposes iconic Rumble sound bites with Rathman’s spectacular brushwork. You can see additional stills here, or just watch the video below.
Next up: Round Zero by oil painter Jerome Lagarrigue. No Mas describe this one thusly: “Lagarrigue draws inspiration from Ali’s own zoological poetry (‘I done wrassled with an alligator/Tussled with a whale’) in exploring Ali’s mental and spiritual transformation in the moments before the bell sounds round one.” OK, so that sounds a tad pretentious, but the imagery is magnificent, all the more so when you see it in motion. Check it out:
The third video is by pen-and-ink illustrator James Blagden, is a hoot. As you may know, James Brown was headlining an all-star soul concert in Zaire that was organized in conjunction with the Rumble (and was also the subject of a recent documentary). So with the Godfather of Soul and the Greatest of All Time having been in the same place at the same time, Blagden has imagined a fictitious showdown between the two of them, set to JB’s “Cold Blooded.” Dig:
Great stuff, three great takes on a seminal event, and three potent reminders that boxing is still the most aesthetically potent sport of them all. Chris is going to be making some of the original animation artwork available for sale, and there may be an exhibit at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville. You can keep track of all that news on the No Mas site.
I love these short films, and I certainly don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade here, but I do feel a reality check is in order regarding the Rumble. To wit: It was a bad fight, and a boring one. Forget all the When We Were Kings mythologizing and just watch the fight. If you do, one thing quickly becomes apparent: Foreman looks like an amateur. No balance, no leverage, no nothing. Watch how he often he has his palms awkwardly extended and open in front of him, like a two-bit street pug. He doesn’t even look like a credible slugger — more like a third-rate Tough Man contestant. Seriously, there are multiple points in the fight where it’s embarrassing to watch him. Meanwhile, Ali’s rope-a-dope tactics, while canny, make for a snooze of a bout. Even the eventual knockout is unsatisfying — more of a cumulative meltdown than major punch-and-drop.
And yet the legend of the Rumble has endured. Why? (1) Foreman had built up an aura of invincibility in his previous fights, so the result was seen as a huge upset. (2) This was the fight in which Ali reclaimed the heavyweight title, something that had only been done once before (by Floyd Patterson, don’tcha know). (3) Ali, as was his habit, used the buildup to the fight as a backdrop for addressing powerful themes of race and culture — particularly powerful in this case, since the fight was in Africa. (4) Fight fans love epic themes, even if they’re more rooted in myth than in fact, and this fight had lots of powerful thematic elements. (5) “Rumble in the Jungle” is a catchy slogan.
None of which makes the No Mas videos any less compelling. Like I said, I’m just trying to provide a nugget of reality amidst the mythmaking.
Finally, one interesting uni-related note from the Rumble: Referee Zack Clayton wore zebra stripes — not something you often see in the boxing ring.
Bonus Column: I’ll have a short piece on World Series rings up on ESPN today. I won’t be around to add the link when it goes live, but it should be at this URL (that link will give an error message until the piece goes live, probably around 12:30pm eastern).
College Hoops Home Stretch: I’m currently working on my annual college basketball season-preview column for ESPN. Compiling one of these columns for college sports is different than doing it for one of the pro leagues, because there’s no central database of all the new uniforms, no league PR office or single manufacturer to go over things with. Basically, it’s a free-for-all, so I just try to stay alert and keep track of all the new designs and patches as I become aware of them.
Here’s what I have so far: Alabama, Auburn, Cal, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Creighton, Georgia Tech, Grand Canyon, Iowa State, Kentucky (rumors of something Lebron-ish, but no confirmation yet), Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Missouri State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio U., Oregon (I think — not yet confirmed), Pacific (alternate uni for the Dec. 9 game against Cal), Pitt, San Diego State, South Carolina, UNC (1957 throwback), UNLV, Utah, Vanderbilt, Washington (new black alt), Washington State, and WVU (black alt).
I’m sure there are others I’ve missed — not just new uniforms, but also patches, court designs, etc. — and that’s where you come in. If you know of any college hoops unveilings not listed above, or if you become aware of any over the next week or so, please speak up. Thanks.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The single-bar facemask lives! That’s our old friend Scott Player, now plying his trade in the UFL (with thanks to Doug Keklak and Mike Rigby). … The 49ers are changing who gets to wear the green dot on defense (with thanks to Mark Snider). ”¦ Some great uniform shots in this video tribute to the late NHL ref Bill Chadwick (with thanks to Alan Kreit). ”¦ England’s new rugby kit is my favorite color, with a poppy thrown in for Armistice Day (with thanks to Michael Orr). ”¦ Striped stirrups sighting in yesterday’s “Family Circus” (big thanks to Vernona Elms). ”¦ Insert joke about one white hockey glove here (with thanks to Mark Snider). ”¦ Not uni-related, but if you wanna see something really beautiful — I mean really beautiful — click on the embedded video here (thanks, Kirsten). ”¦ You’ve heard of FNOB, but how about FNOF? That’s the Raja, of course, wearing a Chicago youth organization uni (great find by Paul Wiederecht). ”¦ Good article about early Red Wings mask history here (with thanks to Tim Shay). ”¦ New uniforms for the Jacksonville Suns. ”¦ For next year’s April Fool, maybe I’ll start a rumor that the Seahawks are gonna be wearing this (bizarre find by Matthew Weber). ”¦ New World Cup kit for Ivory Coast. I don’t like that diagonal shoulder treatment, but I love their new crest (with thanks to Coachie Ballgames). ”¦ Tremendous batch of old 1940s Washington Huskies photos here (big thanks to John Doodigian). ”¦ According to the fourth graf of this story, Avs goalie Craig Anderson once “lived in Sweden and inserted a double-s in the middle of his surname to to fit in. When he played for the Blackhawks, he had an incorrect [double-s] spelling on the name bar of his jersey until the NHL, as he says, ‘questioned the legality of it.'” I don’t like to post watermarked Getty photos (and I ask that none of you do so either), but you can see the single-s and double-s versions of Anders(s)on’s Blackhawks NOB if you go to Getty’s main page and search on “Craig Anderson 2003 Chicago” (with thanks to Paul Richard Cook). ”¦ I like socks as much as the next guy — probably more — but this is going overboard. … I’m heading to Cooperstown later today and will be there throughout the weekend (good place to be during the Series, right?). See you on Monday.
That’s not a poppy on the England Rugby kit, that’s a rose (Rose of Lancashire?) and a permanent part of their kit.
There will be a lot of poppies seen in the next couple of weeks in English and Canadian sports, however.
LockBull beat me to the punch. I’ve also heard that called a “Twickenham Rose” before, and a few of my old rugby squad friends called it the “Scarlet Carson”… they also REALLY loved the V for Vendetta comic.
So I just saw those Va. Tech jerseys from last night and they are certainly special. Thankfully, after how that game ended last night, we might never have to see them again. Woof!

Any one else notice last night in the World Series that PETE Martinez’s jersey Spelled out “PHILLLIES” from certain angles? Looked kinda stupid
That is England’s “change kit.” Their primary kit was, and remains, white.

Or when the phillies manager with his phillies jacket on looked like “PHILLLLLLIES.”
Foreman quite frankly did something more amazing by winning the title in his forties. And he’s retained most of his faculties to boot. Ali may have won the “Rumble”, but he’s been punchdrunk for a couple of decades, now. And don’t give me anything about Parkinson’s Disease, it’s more like “Frazier’s Disease”, caused from taking too many of Joe’s punches.
I thought a special mention would be made to the Pedro Porthole from last night.

The new Jacksonville Suns logo and uniforms are a downgrade, in my opinion. The team had a nice blue-red-yellow color scheme with a modern-looking, but not over the top, “JS” on the main cap, as well as a terrific old-style cap:

That’s not the porthole. All the buttons are buttoned. It’s just a gap that’s common in the pro-button style.
Yeah, the fight was boring. Ali’s rope-a-dope strategy worked–I remember emulating it in fights (real or pretend) with my brothers– but it made for a dull fight. But it sure was an event. Heavywieght title bouts back then–boxing in general–commanded such attention.
The Yi Peng lanterns are dreamy.
Paul, great commentary on the fight vs. the event. I’ve long held this opinion, but I’m killed whenever I bring it up. It was a bad fight, but the cultural impact was the story. You did a really nice job capturing that with your writing today.
Have a great time this weekend.
Oregon will debut the Carbon helmets tomorrow against USC. Accompanied by their black jerseys and gray pants.

Oregon will be wearing an Oakland Raider-esk uniform this week. The debut of the carbon fiber helmet, black jersey and “steel” pants. against the classic USC look.
My 2-year-old daughter thinks the Mets’ logo is a princess castle (and judging by their modern-day performance, she might be correct).

Ali had so many sycophants around him at the end of his career it was sad. None of them wanted Ali to stop fighting and end the gravy train. Had they known then what they know now they would have 1) had him retire after Frazier III and not let Ali get anywhere near a ring again and 2) put him on the lecture circuit where he could still make money for him and those on his money train.
Pacheco did the right thing by quitting in ’77, Dundee should’ve done the same. The telling scene at the end of the fight (and the doc) was Dundee not letting Ali get up for round 11 and Bundini challenging him on it. Fighting’s a brutal sport, but you can’t let a person who was a slurring, slow shadow of himself like Ali was into the ring.

That Ivory Coast jersey is actually their away kit for the upcoming World Cup. Their Home top will be the same template with the triangle in the shoulder, but it will be much more subtle, because the jersey is solid orange, no stripes.
Puma sponsors most African teams, including the five current group leaders (Algeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Tunisia and Ghana), and I know the last four will be wearing this template. Have not yet seen Algeria’s, but would expect the same.
Host South Africa are sponsored by Adidas, so they’ll have something different. I think the only other Puma-sponsored teams that have qualified are Italy and Switzerland, so they may have this template as well, although last time Italy’s kit was more unique than the other Puma-sponsored teams, and that may continue, since they’re the cup holders this time around.
Yesterday, at my college(University of Wisconsin Parkside), the Milwaukee Brewers Senior Director of Marketing Kathy Schwab gave a presentation on various things in upper management. I asked after the presentation about a journalism student internship program, it’s what I do, but I also asked if they have thought about switching to new uniforms. I had asked if they’ve focused on current colors and 1982’s look. She said it is something they’ve heavily discussed and think would be a great thing, but they’re currently keeping with the 2 current logos and looks.
I’m doubting we’ll get anything soon, but it’s cool to know that concept has been in the woodworks. I want current colors and any old look badly:

I hope Oregon does end up wearing the carbon helmets, just to see what it’s all about. Still, nothing can top what they wore week 3 against Utah.

Yeah, it’s a part of Adidas’ lazy template system. It looks horrible on the long-sleeve jerseys and only slightly better on the short-sleeve. It would have been better if they had made both sleeves blue (contrasting sleeves is a pretty traditional soccer uniform look). The powder blue is a nice counterpoint to the orange, though.

Yup. Was my point. Does it matter? Do they HAVE to use real colors? Do we really need to keep saying, “Who ever saw a green Bear”? Kinda old news by now, huh? And certainly a less-than-original observation.
Everyone hates brown so much. Well, brown and tan would cover a helluva lot of the uni landscape if Animal Kingdom Accuracy were a factor in uniforms being widely accepted.
Besides, anyone ever pulled up in a new Mustang convertible and had someone point and say, “Man, who ever saw a BLUE Mustang (snort, snort).”

due to the difference between their on-field sartorial wearage and their official media guide colorological listography.
In other words, do they look like a duck, walk like a duck, dress like a duck…or are their school colors decided non-ducky?
Answer? Both. Hence, the categorizational divergification and mutually dichoctomous classification thereunto.

Oh, MikeP…?
Could put a yellow facemask on one of those DuckTracker templates, for fun? Preferably with the yellow cleats?
That would just, um…ducky.

Well, of course, in terms of Zoological Correctness.
But, they themselves have already seen fit to interpret feet as yellow by dint of their cleated feet. I am merely suggesting they follow that feat by following their feet and it putting on their bill…er, facemask.

I believe that’s the Oregon helmets you’re referring to?
In going through those Husky pictures it struck me as to how many different helmets they wore in that period of the 1940’s

Maybe Oregon should add that look to the current set they now have. I wonder if they were green and yellow?

It would be cool if they did a modern interpretation of this old school Oregon helmet. ala Michigan style. I could see the Nike design team have some fun with this.

Colorological? Diverigification? I done learned me some new words today…
I hope Oregon doesn’t debut the carbon helmets this weekend. Last time they debuted a radical helmet, the yellow with ghost flames and the ‘O’ on the back of the helmet they got destroyed 38-6 to BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl. Hopefully they don’t debut the carbon and lose by 50!
Within the whole zoological correctness argument, how does Georgia not fit? Uga is solid white, nose, paw pads black. After the Cocktail Party his eyes may be red as well.

Does anyone know a good place to get some SF Giants apparel? I love the designs and styles in all of the Uni Watch sponsors, but there just is not enough Giants themed items.
Thanks!
Just watching NHL Network, and we have hockey’s answer to the fake umpires in Toronto.
At Columbus, behind the left goal, there’s two guys dressed in the new NHL referee jerseys – numbers, stripes and all…

Tuning in as we speak…Fox Sports Ohio rules!
So Florida Tuskers’ RBs Micheal Pittman (a former Buc) and Tatum Bell are among the Tuskers who say their UFL team could beat the Tampa Bay Bucs?
Hell, William & Mary probably could say with the Bucs for three quarters.
So whether the Tuskers would win or not almost isn’t the point. It’s really not a comment on how good the UFL is, but rather more about how incredibly awful too many NFL teams are this year.
If part of the Tuskers’ intent is to comment on the woefully inept job these stumbling NFL organizations are doing of putting a quality product on the field, they are spot-on.
Been thinking about this for awhile, and each week it gets worse. The Rams, Bucs, Raiders, Redskins, Browns, Lions all should be ashamed of themselves for a bringing an unneeded “L.A. Clippers element” to the NFL. You could put those teams in one division and highest anyone would finish is third.
There are down years. And there are down mentalities. Definitely not the same thing.
Almost looks like those organizations are belt-tightening now in anticipation of a work stoppage in 2011, doesn’t it. Don’t kid yourselves, there ALWAYS are owners who think like that.
We had one here who loved his Twins with all his heart…unless, of course, if someone wanted to pay him $75 million. Then he’d have been more than happy to walk away and let them be “contracted.”
—Ricko
Speaking of such things, we also had Big Red, who sold his team to the Wilfs, then promptly moved arguably the team’s greatest on-field asset (Randy Moss) to avoid making a $7 million payment due him, thereaby adding another $7 million to the sale price.
Yeah, owners are a noble lot. They sure are.

The owners, the players…at this point they deserve each other.
For every owner who does a salary dump, there seems to be a player who demands to be the highest-paid guy in the league, or another one who wants to restructure his contract with 3 or 4 years left in his original deal. Both sides are so out of touch with reality it’s sad.
At least Big Red had better taste in unis the Ziggy. I used to like those Vikings jerseys with the Viking head on the sleeves.

The flower on England’s jersey is an English rose, and it’s pretty much always on their jersey.
First time I’ve paid attention to rugby jerseys in a long time. Looks like a soccer shirt.
WVa-USF is much of a game, but it’s been a heckuva game.
Would have preferred one of the teams wore their gold pants, though. For more light-dark differentiation.
(What the hell, is everyone at a costume party tonight? Oh, lord, I just flashed on an image of UW costume party. Don’t put The Jeff in charge, though; no one would be allowed to wear a white jersey)
