I’ve always been a fan of hard work. For that reason, the only two NHL players whose jerseys I own are Adam Graves’s and Jed Ortmeyer’s.
I don’t need to tell you anything about Graves, but you might not know too much about Ortmeyer. In five-plus seasons, he’s scored 15 goals, but he’s a hard worker who kills penalties and never gives up. He was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism in August of 2006 but returned to the Rangers lineup just four months later. The following season he was a finalist the season following his embolism for the NHL’s Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, given for dedication to the game. He’s also been honored by the Rangers by twice winning the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, for outstanding commitment and hard work on and off the ice.
For these reasons, I purchased a Jed Ortmeyer #41 Rangers home jersey. He even signed it for me, at an event for Rangers advertising sponsors that I happened to get tickets for. This has been one of my favorite jerseys to wear to Madison Square Garden.
After wearing my Ortmeyer jersey to last Thursday’s Rangers/Devils tussle, I was walking out of the Garden when I was approached by a group of Swedish tourists. They spoke in half-broken English, but I barely made out one of them saying, “I would like to trade my sweater for yours. My name is Ortmeyer.”
He was wearing an authentic Frolunda Indians sweater (the team Henrik Lundqvist played for before he was drafted by the Rangers), with sponsor patches and all. I had no second thoughts. I took my jersey off right there on Seventh Ave. and handed it to a complete stranger. We thanked each other in our own languages and draped our new sweaters over our heads.
Like Jed Ortmeyer, I too pride myself on hard work and making good decisions. I hope I have made that man named Ortmeyer as happy as the man named Jed Ortmeyer made me.
Culinary Corner: Paul here. I was down in Baton Rouge last weekend, working on an ESPN story that you’ll be hearing about shortly. Most of my “research” involved spending Saturday afternoon tailgating with a bunch of LSU fans. There was a ton of food — chicken, shrimp, pork chops, three kinds of sausage, blueberry pie, etc., etc. — so I was surprised to see that someone brought along a pack of Oreos. Seemed like overkill.
And yet, and yet. As we cooked throughout the afternoon, it occurred to me that the Oreos seemed a bit lonely in their sterile plastic package while the rest of the food was basically having a party on the grill. Why not let the Oreos join the party? Why not indeed. I took two of the cookies out of the package and placed them on one of the grills, where they fit in just fine. Then I put the lid back on the grill and went to find myself another beer.
About three minutes later, the Oreos were hot and slightly soft, and the creme feeling had developed a nicely caramelized edge. I tried one of them — deeeee-lish. Sweet with a smoky undercurrent, mmmmm. I offered the second cookie to one of the other tailgaters and rushed to put a few more Oreos on the grill.
Soon I was being hailed as a genius, and we were running low on Oreos. Which just goes to show that anything tastes better when it’s fresh off the grill.
Membership Update: Birthday boy Scott Turner just whipped up a bunch of cool new membership designs. In addition to Dan Bardin’s Blackhawks Winter Classic throwback, shown at right, this batch also includes two orange alternates — Orioles and Dolphins — our first Kansas City Scouts design, and Ed Westfield Jr.’s odd choice of infinity as a uni number.

In Baton Rouge and no Uni Watch meet-up? As a longtime reader and sometime contributor, that makes me very sad.
Re: Behind the back pass (BTBP)
Sonny Jurgensen interviewed at HOF in 2008:
I saw Derek Devine and Colt Brennan watching your video footage on the touchscreens. They seemed really impressed with your behind the back pass.
I know! (laughs) I was telling them how I actually did that in a game [with the Eagles] against college all-stars, and we were talking about it. They said, “You really did that?” and I told them why, so that was interesting.
Wait, why was that?
I was getting rushed from the right defensive end, who came in while the tackle was backing up, and he jumped up. I wanted to throw the ball to the outside left, and when the guy jumped up, I couldn’t get the ball through him, so my reaction was to go behind my back and I hit the receiver, Pete Retzlaff, in stride for 33 yards.
So it was just a reaction to something that came up. I guess the reaction came from having done it a lot in warm-ups, which is what the video in the Hall showed.
I did it in college one time and completed it, and the coach took me aside and said, “If you ever do that again, I’m taking your uniform,” and I looked him and said, “But it was complete! We got 40 yards on the play.” He said, “Don’t do it.”
And did you?
No. It was one time when I had to do it. You don’t just do it to be … flashy or something. It was something I could throw accurately, so I used it when I needed it.
Here is a follow up to the disqualified cross country runner due to a uniform violation:

Really? Tim Hardaway? He played for the Heat for like 5 seasons. I guess when you’ve also retired the numbers of Michael Jordan and Dan Marino, you really have no standards.
Go ahead, Heat, retire the owner’s favorite number and #6 for the fans and be done with it.
So Paul, were you in Baton Rouge to hang with the LSU tailgaters who plan their menu around their opponents’ school and nickname?
Not sure why South Carolina is wearing Nike uniforms. I thought the school went UnderArmour like Maryland.
Not a fan of using Miami’s font for the numbers either. That’s the second school I’ve seen this week using them for their bb unis.

I guess Thursday night is the new fright night for college football, with garish uniforms galore (Va. Tech in orange and maroon — yuk! — and Carolina in all-dark-blue last week).
Arent’ all these alternates, mix-and-matches, and throwbacks getting old? It’s a UNIFORM. Make it UNIFORM, please. Alabama, Penn State, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, et. al., don’t do this. And look at the Yankees. Two uniforms in 80 years! Coincidence? I think not.
Meanwhile, what in the world is South Carolina doing ditching its garnet uniforms? Why add a third uniform with a color you don’t have and drop the third uniform that is one of your school colors. Memo to South Carolina: Your colors are Garnet and Black.
Wow…are they the all blacks or the all Adidas? That damn logo is almost as big as the rugby logo.
Paul, those bracelets are similar to the titaniums, some woman was in my store trying to get me to sell them (we sell the phitens) and had me stand on one leg with it and all that. ill try and remember the name today, but til i do… thats what they are

There was a brief discussion a few weeks back about which team had made the most appearances on ESPN Thursday Night Football. I knew that Va Tech had played many times on that night of the week and some light research revealed the following:
The Hokies have appeared on TNF 19 times prior to tonight. (Ga.Tech 23 times, as a comparison).
Tech’s record in these games is 15-4, with 3 losses to BC, 1 to Miami(FL).
They are 9-2 at Lane Stadium, 6-2 on the road.
They will play at East Carolina next Thursday.
Perhaps something to toggle to during World Series commercial breaks. Sports journalist Erin Andrews will be prowling the sidelines, for you keyhole-watchers.

About Hinchliffe …. it was also a place where cars were raced in the glory days of sprint-car racing. Speed did a segment with Dave Despain and Chris Economaki.
Apparently, what killed sprint-car racing in the 50s was the wide availability of sprint car kits which made competing cars more and more alike.

Was gonna say, I remembered the Braves starting that season with those striped babies and their standard issue socks. As I recall, they didn’t have stirrups, though, and that made them look a little goofy. That, and the stripes were too high, like a dark version of NBA/ABA ’70s socks. Or soccer socks.
For baseball, stripes need to be a bit more toward midway between bottom of pants and end of sock (whether at rear stirrup or a shoe top). Visually just off if they crowd the pants too much. You want to see a significant amount of the sock color ABOVE the stripes, too. Aren’t supposed to look like football socks.

I wish they’d made them a permanent part of the uniform, like the Cardinals do. If you go high-cuffed, you have to wear socks with the stripes. Whether they’re too high or not, they look better than solid navy.
I hate that teams dumb-down their uniforms to the lowest common denominator b/c the manufacturers want fewer variables when producing the apparel. The vertically arched nameplates and the striped socks are two examples.

Yes, it’s also disappointing Oklahoma City choose Thunder as their nickname. Thought a name with more of a western influence would have been better. Always like the logo of the old Ft. Worth Calvary of the areana league.
According to this link, the Twins are having a moving sale on November 7th. Maybe they’ll have some powder blue unis left over from the dark days.

In those days, the NFL (and NFC) team wore dark jerseys in the odd-numbered Super Bowls and the AFL/AFC team wore dark jerseys in the even-numbered jerseys.
A bit off topic here, yet, I was just watching ESPN’s 1st and 10 show where Chad Ochocinco was the guest debater against Skip Bayless. Well, aside from Skip’s usual steadfast opinion, which I do agree with from time to time, he proceeded to really disrespect Chad by calling him “child”; i.e. “please child…..” etc. I just thought it sounded terribly wrong coming out of Skip’s mouth, and VERY disrespectful. Chad held his own and was very proffesional considering. On the other hand, Skip deserved to be bitch slapped.

Keith Foulke routinely removed his, along with a few other players. We’ve covered it here on the site pretty regularly over the years (although I’ve only recently begun using the term “squatchee”).
So I just bought some old seemingly Japanese baseball jerseys at a thrift store. The first one says “Nonbeys” and is red, white and blue. The second is a grey mesh jersey that looks like it could be an old Giants jersey and says “Creation” on the front in black and orange. Both have number six on the front and back. The fact that they feel the need to go to the media and defend it should signify to them that the rule is positively moronic.
When that particular high school tack association starts providing suitable compression shorts themselves they can regulate stitching color. Until then, runners have to use what they can buy, and that brand they can afford or prefer may have contrast stitching, and it’s not their fault. The guy may have needed a specific brand that’s built to keep a recurring injury from coming bank and can’t go without them.
If you have this kind of rule on a pro level, it’s stupid but fine. At that level, pay is involved and the athletes have enough pull where if one isn’t made, it can be ordered.
At the high school level, this rule has no place being enforced, much less existing.

Remember that cheap shot well, Mario and the Pens came back to dispose of the Rangers in that playoff series, during the back to back Stanley Cup championship run. The next season, the Pens set the regular season record for consecutive wins enroute to the best record in the NHL, but were upset by the Isles in the playoffs. It is good to see you can get some sets of NFL teams from the 50s through today. Wish the basketball game had some 80s teams.
As a recent graduate of Washington & Lee, it was fascinating to see that WVU vs W&L footage from 1952. W&L is a small private (now Division III) university in a sleepy Virginia town, and while our football team isn’t bad for a DIII school, nowadays we wouldn’t even cross the 50 yard line against WVU. Back then we were Division I and even made it to the Gator Bowl the year before (1951). W&L has a pretty strict honor code, and apparently a major cheating scandal with our football team a few years later led the university president to get rid of athletic scholarships altogether.

That was my first thought. Then I figured “well, maybe he thought his teammate fumbled and he thinks he’s tackling the guy who recovered it.”
Then I wondered why he wouldn’t just let the “fumble recoverer” continue running toward his own end zone.

Even better, switch to APBA, which aside from being a better game when played with the advanced rules, has had a Negro Leagues set for more than a decade, and in fact much of the modern statistical record of the Negro Leagues used by the Strat folks to make their cards was compiled by SABR members specifically in order to make the APBA cards.
I’ve been playing simulations of pre-1947 integrated teams with APBA for years. My results match the press reports of games with the Strat cards, though: The great white players are still great, the great black players fit right in, and the bottom quarter or so of white players just can’t compete. If anything, the likes of Ruth might have been more impressive had baseball been integrated, because even the 1927 Yankees had a few scrubs you could pitch to for easy outs. Exchange the worst white guys on the ’27 Yankees for superior black players, and Ruth sees better pitches with more runners on base.
The only problem is that the Negro Leagues generally had more interesting uniforms. So you need to find a way to bring the unis over with the players.

A better caption for that would be “dark vs. dark”, because there isn’t much color. That really emphasizes the huge difference between, say, a red team vs. a blue team and a black team against a navy blue one. Whoever decided both teams in that game would wear dark jerseys is a total idiot.
So I just bought some old seemingly Japanese baseball jerseys at a thrift store. The first one says “Nonbeys” and is red, white and blue. Amateur baseball is very big, even after people graduate from college as a participation sport and my guess is that these uniforms that we have all seen at these thrift stores are samples of these team uniforms from the past. We have never confirmed that, but that is my guess.
Because these are “club” teams, they will have odd names but maybe all of the guys are Yomiuri Giants fans, so they want the same colors and designs for the uniform, which manufacturers have created. You can even make your uniform look like major league teams as well in the catalogs.

Or maybe it’s too bad the U of Hawaii got “undies-in-a-bundle” homophopic about it.
How many of us see a rainbow after a rainstorm and think of that meaning? There still are rainbows, and they still are associated with—among plenty of other places and things—the Hawaiian Islands.
I mean, really, if they’re so macho, have some balls and keep wearing the rainbow on the unis. Guess they weren’t secure enough to do that, though.

Sorry i forgot to include some sort of symbol for sarcasm, professor.
The BYU women’s volleyball team is doing the pink thing tonight (yeah, that’s right, I’d rather switch to volleyball than see 3 minutes of commercials during the World Series). They look like simple t-shirts with name and numbers printed on them.
The coach ordered the shirts with first names only on back. When asked why, she said it was because they ordered them a while ago, and since then a few of the girls had gotten married. She didn’t want to worry about whether the girls kept their name, hyphenated or changed names.
They look better than their opponents. UNLV has red jerseys with UNLV in red and a very thin black outline. You can barely see the letters. The numbers are in black, but could use a white outline or something.
No screen grabs, but it’s on DirecTV channel 374 if anyone has better technology than I have.

I found it quite disrespectful to Andy Bathgate when the Rangers chose to retire his number as well as the hack that was Adam Graves. WAFJ!!!
I don’t think you’re going to find too many people who know anything about hockey that consider Graves a ‘hack’.
Really, I do know quite a bit about hockey. Do tell??
lol… 329 goals in the NHL including 52 in 93-94 is a ‘hack’?
You must be a blueshirt fan. I’ll give you the 52 in the year the Rangers won the cup. Beyond that year, his stats are fairly pedestrian. One year does not a career make. Oh I suppose you’ll throw the he was a “character guy” out. Frankly compare his Rangers stats to Ron Duguay’s. Does Duguay deserve to have his number retired, no I think not. Neither did Adam Graves.
Duguay deserved to have his hair retired…

Or his jeans. Oh la la…
Page 2 is tweaking logos again, this time the NBA’s. These are funny!

I can’t believe that someone is calling Graves a “hack” based off of one 2 minute minor penalty. Graves wasn’t a great player, he isn’t a hall of famer, but I would venture that any team would have loved to have had him in the 90’s. Beyond that I will guarantee that every NHL player has committed a penalty similar to the one shown in that video where you intend to go after the stick and completely miss. This includes your Gretzkys, Messiers, Lemieuxs, etc. That doesn’t condone the action but it also shouldn’t be the sole basis for laying a rather weighty label on a player.

I never said the guy was a hall of famer. I’m just disputing your notion that he was a ‘hack’. Graves was as good a teammate as there could be and is absolutely deserving of having his number retired. If you disagree that’s fine… but you’d be wrong.
Adam Graves will never be forgiven for the two hander he put on Lemieux. That’s why he’s a hack. Actually, his stupidity is what united the Penguins during the ’92 playoffs, maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on him after all. Beyond that, sorry, his numbers are not deserving for his number to be retired. When do you think the blueshirts will retire Alexi Kovalev’s number? I stand by my comment that it was an insult to Andy Bathgate, a hall of famer. You want to honor Graves for all of his community service, great teammate, blah blah blah, fine. Do it on a different night. From ’55 to ’63 Bathgate led the Rangers in scoring, by a hugh margin. He was the face of the franchise. Not only was the fact he had to share the honor with Graves an insult, that he had to wait as long as he did was an even bigger insult.

Okay, the exclamation point may have been a bit too much. These are amusing.

Jeez… career stats are the only thing that make one worthy of having his number retired? Adam Graves is one of the most beloved players in Ranger history. Sorry if that offends you (not really) but that’s the way it is. Clearly you’re NOT a Ranger fan and that’s fine. But I think Ranger fans will probably give you a big ‘suck it’ and keep honoring Graves the way we see fit. And, just for your info, Graves introduced Bathgate on his night as “The greatest Ranger to ever wear number 9”.
Did anybody catch the guy behind 1st base tonight wearing the Bad News Bears jersey? Couldn’t get a screen shot, though.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet or not but in the Sounders-Dynamo playoff game, Nate Jaqua was injured in the first half and blood was drawn. In the second half, he came out with a bandage around his head and a jersey with no name OR NUMBER!

How about that green on orange too
There’s a guy on the Seattle Sounders game right now wearing a blank-back jersey. It’s on ESPN2 right. Can someone get a screenshot?

It’s what the Bears-Seahawks game could’ve looked like.
In pic 35 of the 1950 World Series slideshow, one of the Phils appears to be wearing striped stirrups. If you run through the rest of the pictures, no one else wears them. Anybody have any ideas?
The photo is mislabeled. Based on the “Dressed to the Nines” database, I would guess that the picture is from either the ’47 or ’48 season.
“the base of the “P” decal on the Phillies’ batting helmets extends all the way down to where the brim meets the rest of the helmet.”
Nothing new – many teams are in the same boat. I’ve even seen this before on Cubs helmets, and their “C” logo is possibly the shortest helmet logo in baseball.
Next time you have are shopping for a S’mores cookout, grab a bag of Starburst. You’ll love them toasted as much as you loved the Oreos.
Thanks for the kind words regarding the article. When Paul Lukas replied to my email saying he would use it in an upcoming post, I had no idea it would be a main article. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that it was.
I did think about how far my jersey would be going, and wonder what use it will get. I also wonder what the new owner will do about all the beer stains on the bottom piping…
The reason why Adam Graves is loved so much, and correct me if I’m wrong, is not just the year he had in 1994, or his stats. Its how he embodied the character of New York City in respect to how he handled himself on and off the ice (the slash in the playoffs notwithstanding.) He was a gritty player who never took a shift off, got very little credit for all the work he did but never complained, especially with the likes of Messier, Gretzky, Leetch, and Richter surrounding him, and demonstrated undying support for charities and causes in and around NYC. He never failed to sign an autograph if he was asked, and always had a smile on his face. He was the only biological child of his parents, but had somewhere around 400 foster children come through his home at some point when he was young, and referred to each of them as his brother or sister. He is definitely a role model in times when there are few.
I probably won’t buy another Jed Ortmeyer sweater. But I have already ordered a #97 Matt Gilroy jersey, for the same reasons why I purchased the two I previously had: He does the right thing. After high school, Gilroy decided to go to junior college, even though he was talented enough to play in the Canadian Juniors or minor leagues. And after two years of junior college, stayed at Boston University for four years to graduate with a degree. Winning the Hobey Baker award for National Player of the Year and a National Championship doesn’t hurt either. But he waited until he was able, physically and mentally, to join the NHL, which is a quality we rarely, if ever, see among young athletes.
