Monday Morning Uni Watch

Screen shot 2009-09-27 at 8.14.09 PM.png

We have a lot to cover today, boys and girls, so let’s get started:

• The Giants continue to have issues with their Reebok logos, which of course amuses me no end. Alas, this is probably the last we’ll see of this particular problem. I can’t divulge all the details, but let’s just say it’s been addressed and shouldn’t happen again. Too bad.

• What are those orange tabs in Mark Sanchez’s helmet? Are those the radio speakers? If so, I’ve never seen them stand out so clearly like that.

• Speaking of helmet radios, Michael Vick didn’t have a green dot yesterday (presumably because he wasn’t always used as a QB, right?).

• And speaking of the Eagles’ radio-equipped helmets, they don’t just have a green dot — they also have an extra i.d. label.

• Braylon Edwards went double-sock-striped for the Browns, and Chris Johnson did likewise for the Titans-as-Oilers. (In a related item, Eric Taylor did the same thing on Saturday for the Edmonton Eskimos.)

• No photo, but I was really surprised to see Tennessee cornerback Ryan Mouton returning punts bare-handed — no gloves! (Not sure if he also went gloveless while playing defense.) As it happens, he fumbled twice, which makes me wonder if he’ll be wearing gloves — or returning punts — next week.

• Similarly, it’s surprising to see Rams TE Daniel Fells going gloveless — and with the old-school tape loops on his fingers to boot!

• Speaking of the Rams, they retired Deacon Jones’s number at halftime yesterday.

•  Jeff Fisher looked like he was wearing his big brother’s too-big shirt.

• I don’t know if holding was called on this play, but I hope so.

• Kinda early in the season for the Texans’ annual Halliburton Day uniforms, no?

• Oh, right — this. Frankly, I don’t have a lot to say about it, other than the obvious: It’s a very poor piece of design, and it takes the Seahawks’ inexplicable fascination with that neon-snot tone (which I have never liked — not on the pants, not on the logo eyeball, not on the gloves) to its logical conclusion. In other words, they’ve taken the worst element in a bad identity package and blown it up to its full potential. Congrats!

When Phil, Michael Princip, and I first proposed this design as an April Fool’s joke last spring, it was just a fun prank. We didn’t realize a bunch of idiots in the Seattle front office would take it as some sort of frat-boy dare. This would be flattering if it weren’t so depressing.

Anyway, now that we know the power of a Uni Watch April Fool’s rumor, next year I’ll be sure to propose something more useful, like the Mets ditching the black, or universal single-payer health care, or Guy Fieri developing laryngitis. Promise.

(Thanks to everyone who submitted tips and screen shots, including Bryan Stabbe, Mako Mameli, Max Sellman, Wayne Koehler, Steve Cadger, Chad Todd, and Mat Bernstein.)

Busy Week: On Wednesday, my annual NHL season-preview column will be running on ESPN.com. In addition, I’m going to have a companion column devoted to goalies’ new gear (not just masks, but also pads and blockers) — not sure yet if this bonus column will be running on ESPN or here on the blog. Plus I have a small NFL-related item running on the Page 2 index page right now (scroll down to the lower-left corner).

I’ll post updates here on the blog as things sort themselves out. Stay tuned, etc.

That’s all I can stand, I can’t stands no more: My Earthlink account had yet another major hiccup on Friday, the two primary results of which are as follows: (1) If you sent me anything between noon-ish on Friday and early Saturday morning, I probably didn’t receive it. And (2) I’m changing e-mail accounts.

So as of right now, Uni Watch’s new e-mail address is uniwatching [at] gmail dot com. All Ticker contributions and other uni-related correspondence should go to that address. I also have a new my personal address: plukas64 [at] gmail dot com (but please don’t use that one for uni-related stuff).

I’m keeping the Earthlink addresses active for a while and am forwarding them to my Gmail account, but please update your address books now. Thanks.

Uni Watch News Ticker: By now I’m sure you’ve all seen the very nice throwbacks that Oregon wore on Saturday. But just in case, there are plenty of photos available here. ”¦ Here’s a great shot of the thick memorial armband that the Pirates wore in 1932 in remembrance of team owner Barney Dreyfuss (with thanks to Bruce Menard). ”¦ New mask for Brett Johnson (with thanks to Zack Tanner). ”¦ Hey, is this the first time Arkansas has worn merit decals? I shed a little tear for Uniwatch when the Seahawks came out in those uniforms. Being a Chicagoan and of course a Bears fan I had to put up with them for an entire four quarters. The guy doing the game (not Dick Stockton) actually said he liked the uniforms. After he said for this I called for his immediate firing by Fox.

During the Bills/Saints game, after they showed a highlight from the Bears/Seahawks game, one of the announcers made a comment along the lines of “How about those uniforms the Seahawks are wearing?” The other announcer follows that statement up with “Yeah, old school, huh?”

    I died a little inside.

Houston always breaks out their “Battle Red” jerseys/pants/socks for the home game vs. the Jaguars. It’s nauseating, and they got what they deserved yesterday, 31-24.

    From Peter King…
Not the best look for Jeff Fisher, that sky-blue long-sleeve thing designed to approximate what the Houston Oilers once wore. I guarantee you Bum Phillips never wore that interesting piece of material someone made Fisher wear. It looked like what a girl would wear as a nightie to a high school sleepover.

If you check out the highlights of the Bears-SheHawks game on NFL.com you can clearly hear someone say “Those are nice jerseys”. The whole Seattle organization has some serious fasting to do after the atrocities they released upon the world yesterday

It is a sledgehammer. The just added it this year. Scroll to bottom of this page: link

I was down near the field for the start of the Iowa State vs. Army game and noticed that the muscular dystrophy patches were actually stickers that the coaches for ISU stuck on their sleeves. Sorry I didn’t get a picture.

ok…saw the hawks in enough replays to form an opinion…i still don’t like it (and i tried to keep as open a mind as possible)…maybe it was because the game was played in bright sunshine (making the green glare difficult to handle; once the game became played in partial shade, it was a little more tolerable, but it was made even worse when a seahawk would run from shade (where the camera apertures were open further) into bright sun, making them particularly bright…and even harder to view

perhaps if the game had been overcast or at night, my first impressions would have been better

as far as the uni design…im NOT a fan of the epaulettes seattle uses…especially on the neon green…simply removing them and making the jersey all green would have been an improvement

    like so

i also think the uni would have been improved with white pants, instead of having the bottom half look like a leotard

    voila

i think that either (or both) of those would be a big improvement and make the alternate much more palatable

    but hey, that’s just me…YMMV

Pretty much what I said in the April Fools ‘green jersey’ joke is how I feel. Not good! I mean, I love the fact that they did something quite different here, however, the end result was very poor design.

Adding insult to injury, the players jerseys matched the link green jerseys. If that wasn’t bad enough, they lost the game. If there’s any consolation, at least they looked somewhat respectable, considering they were playing with so many key players injured. However, they were at home. ;o(

Let’s hope they don’t do ‘green day’ again anytime soon, at least until they get their shit together on the playing field. Then, they can at least boast about the fact that you just got bitch slapped by a football team wearing sprightly frolicsome jerseys.

The Seahawks will only take the snot green fascination to its logical conclusion when they wear that jersey with matching pants.

The only improvement is to bury those jerseys in a landfill, post haste. I liked the neon green as an accent on the regular uni.

I don’t know much about the new Brooklynite hockeysticks, but I did poke around on their website to find out that the company is headquartered in… Staten Island.

Talk about “No Fun League”. The players wearing multiple sock stripes and pants that are cut off above the knee? That’s even uglier than the no-white-sock thing that Nnamdi Asomugha and a few other players insist on doing. If the league wants to start throwing out fines, that’s who they need to go after, not the guy wearing a mask before the game. I mean, come on now.

Peter King should be banned from commenting on unis: He hates the Jets throwbacks, the AFL refs unis, and kinda liked the snot green Seahawks alts? 0 for 3, Peter.

    —–

    d. Awful, awful, awful Jets’ throwbacks. The only thing worse on the Giants Stadium field Sunday was the officials’ garb. I believed I said the old AFL officials’ unis made the men in stripes look like creamsicles when these things debuted in the opening Monday-nighter at Foxboro. Ditto.

    e. Re the Seattle shock-green uniforms, which are to the eyes what a triple-espresso is to the heart rate: I didn’t hate them as much as I thought I would.

Can someone explain why the arkansas merit decals are sledgehammers?

Not exactly Einsteinian, but the common thread i’ve noticed between the unis that are getting slammed and the teams wearing them is that they lost. could it be that their opponents shit-eating grins intimidated them?

As an avid Bear fan I watched the game against the Seahawks in the lime green. Suprisingly, I found the lime green to be less offensive than I thought. Make no mistake, its heinous and should be relegated to the dust bin of history, but a few interesting things did come out.

    1. The use of the lime was minimalized. There were mockups that had lime pants and lime sleeves, given how much the Seahawks apparently like this color it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

    2. You can see it well in this picture, link, that Seattle used Navy for the sleeves AND the pants. Something I had not seen before. It begs the question: What if the Seahawks created a NAVY jersey with lighter sleeves and wore THAT. Either with the lighter blue or white pants. That would banish the monocrome look but enable them to wear whatever pants they wanted.

No, he’s right, the NY Titans uniforms are pretty ugly. They’re using about the worst shade of gold imaginable, and the numbers are in dire need of a white outline. Throw in the lack of white trim on the helmet and lack of logo… and they look like a low budget high school team. There’s a reason they changed colors when they changed names.

Wow.. and i thought the color I had to paint my bedroom was a lot of green. Those Seahawk jerseys are outta this world!(in a bad way)

Anyone with any photoshopping skills care to chroma-key a better color onto the snot green jerseys? I took it as a green screen challenge from the front office in Seattle.

I think the blue sleeves and pants looked good together but I think they should of gone with white tall socks to not have that leotard look. In actuality the white pants could have made the whole outfit seem brighter, If that was even possible.

I think the labeling on the Eagles’ QB helmets has to do with their rather unique situation involving Vick. Since Vick takes the field as both a QB, and a non-QB, they likely need 2 helmets per QB. If, for example, Vick went under center with Kolb split out wide, Kolb would have to wear his back-up helmet.

The green dots obviously differentiate between the helmets, but one could imagine a scenario in which, in the heat of the moment, Vick goes to switch helmets and picks up Kolb’s. So I guess the only surefire way to prevent this is to clearly label the helmets by player name.

As a life long Seahawks fan, I was dreading the lime green unis. But after looking at them, I actually like them. I can’t believe I am saying this, but they look kinda cool. However, they should have been paired with the white pants. If the ‘hawks dropped the dreaded monocrhome blue look (which i never liked) and went with the lime green tops and the white pants at home, I’d be happy with that.

That work, or you want darker?

Irony of the Seahawks glow in the dark green jerseys is that the overall design (silhouette) is sharp. The sleeves have a tie into the helmet, the number fonts are tight and the collar treatment is fine. Color is a huge factor.

They are an upstart hockey equipment manufacturer. They really have nothing to speak of at this time that would set them aside from the competition, but they used to be exclusively an inline hockey stick manufacturer. Lasse Kukkonen is their only “pro” contract right now, but it appears others are trying out their gear.

Honestly, they make lightweight sticks and a few pairs of gloves. For the price they charge for their sticks, you’ll be much lighter in the pocketbook too.

Well, this is just me – I liked them. No, they weren’t perfect, but overall I liked them. The worst part was the shiny blue pants. That’s what really made them look like a less atrractive version of the cheerleaders. If they went with matte pants and blue numbers, they would have looked better in the sunlight.

I love the epaulettes. It’s one of the reasons I accepted the unis so much when they were introduced in ’02. If you removed them, they’d look even more like the Orlando Thunder.

    Sorry…my bad

Enjoyed the Colts-Cardinals game last night. Great helmets on both teams.

Regarding the Seahawks jerseys, I look at it like this: Would I be embarrassed to put them on. No. There are plenty that fall into that camp in all leagues. But in the NFL, Cincinnati, Buffalo and Atlanta come to mind. (And all have great combos in their past.)

The Seahawks’ tried something new and guess what? It worked!

As a former graphic designer, the use of clip art as the identity for a “professional” team of any kind is particularly offensive. It always amazes me that a team will spend millions/billions on players, facilities, etc. and go cheap on the logo, the most identifiable element of their brand.

I’m a traditionalist when it comes to uniforms but I don’t think everyone has to look like Penn St. It’s OK for some teams to experiment with interesting colors and patterns and the Seahawks are one of those teams. If it were the Steelers or Bears I’d have an issue with it.

I was prepared to hate the lime green but I have to say I liked it. But I do agree it would’ve been better with white pants and solid sleeves.

I agree with Phil’s suggestions. The neon green jerseys didn’t offend me nearly as bad as I thought they would, but there was just something about them that didn’t work (besides being an outrageous color).

The entire design looked forced. Perhaps ironically, the design looked like someone from the organization had seen a uniwatch member’s photoshop version of a green jersey and simply replicated that to a tee, which, in agreement with Paul is simply bad design. I’m having a hard time explaining it, but it simply didn’t blend well with the rest of the uniform. It stood out too much, as though they quickly put a green vest on top of their current blue look.

I like the neon green as an accent to the helmet, pants, gloves, and shoes, I think its very sharp and unique. Maybe if they make use of Phil’s suggestions the green could work, but as is, nope.

Now, perhaps they should pair their fog blue with the new navy pants (and maybe use fog blue socks), if it is a noticable difference, it may break that nasty monochrome look. Any photoshoppers interested?

Never understood all the hatin’ on the Jets’ NY Titans throwbacks. Navy and old gold is a beautiful color combination, the old-school varsity serif numerals look terrific, it’s a very clean, classic, uncluttered look. Even the pants look good with the navy jersey; can’t wait to see the road white version.

When people call this uniform “ugly” I just don’t know what they mean. It’s purely a matter of taste, I suppose. Maybe some just don’t like the idea of “the green and white” wearing navy and gold. The jerseys would look better if they had real sleeves and full shoulder loops. Others may not like the lack of a helmet decal. But to me, an “ugly” uniform is one with colors that clash, elements that don’t match, irregular/asymmetrical striping or “panels,” goofy-looking numeral fonts, needlessly busy or overwrought designs, etc. The NY Titans uniforms don’t meet any of these criteria.

Oh sure, pick on the kickers again. Gee, thanks.

Actually, I’ve never been much of a ribbon-wearer, no matter what the color. I support charities, but I prefer to do it privately. Hmm, does this put to rest the whole “athletes aren’t role models” argument? “See? The NFL supports breast cancer research, so should you.” Yes, but don’t submit us to pink in the process.

just wait till I get pictures on here of the colors my wife chose for the bedroom. Accent wall… Main walls…

Next weekend i’ll be throwing the cowboys silver and navy up on the walls of my den.

To each his own, I guess.
I like them, although the number is a bit hard to see. Other than that, it’s a great look IMO.

I could see Jets fans not wanting any blue, though. In that case, throwback to the first Jets uni link and give the Titans unis to Tennessee to replace their regular ones.
ok…saw the hawks in enough replays to form an opinion…i still don’t like it (and i tried to keep as open a mind as possible)…maybe it was because the game was played in bright sunshine (making the green glare difficult to handle; once the game became played in partial shade, it was a little more tolerable, but it was made even worse when a seahawk would run from shade (where the camera apertures were open further) into bright sun, making them particularly bright…and even harder to view

perhaps if the game had been overcast or at night, my first impressions would have been better

as far as the uni design…im NOT a fan of the epaulettes seattle uses…especially on the neon green…simply removing them and making the jersey all green would have been an improvement

    link

i also think the uni would have been improved with white pants, instead of having the bottom half look like a leotard

    link

i think that either (or both) of those would be a big improvement and make the alternate much more palatable

    but hey, that’s just me…YMMV
Phil..Paul….what have we done?!?!

I liked the neon green as an accent but this was a nightmare! I do agree though that the white pants would have made it look a little more “professional”. But alas the best dressed team won the game.

Jeff Joniak & Tom Thayer, Bears radio play-by-play guys, said during yesterday’s game that it was hard to identify players. White numbers, bright jerseys & sunshine made it tricky to call the game correctly.

Let’s talk basic uni color palettes…
(there are some other colors that could be included, but kept it to three in each set to make the point)

Generally speaking, in terms of “value” from dark to light…
    Navy-Royal-Powder
    Forest-Kelly-Lime
    Maroon-Red-Orange
    Old Gold-Athletic Gold-Yellow

Why does Lime, just because it’s used so infrequently, take all the grief? Or maybe that’s it, it just isn’t used very often.

Hell, I thought the Seahawks jersey were fun, a helluva lot brighter (and better) than when they go monochrome dark. Think it’s interesting that there’s such much consternation about them. Guess maybe it’s because every color change lately sees to go from lighter to darker.

Threw people for a loop, apparently. Like seeing someone driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

Besides, as I mentioned yesterday, it’s a color that’s been part of the Seahawks scheme since they went to their current unis. In that sense, it’s absolutely no different that the Dolphins or Bears choosing orange alts. People may not have liked them, but they never got their undies all bundle-ized about the (OMG) orange.

I don’t see why the Hawks bothered with the new navy pants, though. All things considered, was a low-value change. Probably didn’t make the overall look much different than if they’d worn their regular dark pants.

Oh, and the Portland WFL teams (both the Storm and the Thunder) wore lime and royal blue.

Actually isn’t correct for the ’60 NY Titans, either. Their old gold wasn’t that green. More like GA Tech’s last year, only not quite so dark. In darker photos, it turned almost a caramel color, not green.

Heaven forbid a team actually introduce a different color that’s bright and unique to a pro sports league. It’s about the same shade and intensity as the flyers orange, just in green instead of orange, but one gets praised as an all time classic, one gets derided as the worst uniform ever.

Not in Chicago. ESPN radio is AM 1000. Woulda made sense at link.

I just want to point out that the Seahawks have been selling this jersey that they wore for the first time in their team store at QWest Field well before this uni blog came up with the idea.

I love this set, and a lot of Seahawks fans have been wearing the green jersey around the stadium for a long time.

Shows how much TV has improved. I was 15—old enough to have recognized a confederate flag in a heartbeat—but I never saw it as that. And I watched almost the entire game trying it determine what the heck it was. With stadium light refeleciton and all, and black and white TV, I guess the best I could figure was the “WIN” idea.
