Rank Has Its Privileges

Sarge Wings 2.jpg

Notice anything unusual about this Gary Matthews gamer from 1983? That smudge on the right sleeve is a little sergeant’s pin — a reference to Matthews’s nickname, Sarge.

But was the pin actually worn on the field or just added to the jersey after the fact? “The jersey’s current owner said he received it from Matthews with confirmation that the pin was worn during the 1983 season,” says Jared Wheeler, who displayed the jersey in the Philly baseball history exhibit he recently curated. “He also had a photo that confirmed this, but I was unable to get a shot of that to send to you.” I did a bit of very quick photo research but wasn’t able to find a shot with a clear view of Matthews’s right sleeve. Maybe someone with a bit of time on their hands would like to do a more in-depth photo search? (Update: Mike Hersh just came up with this. Nice job!)

September Raffle: Our friends at Helmet Hut are kicking off the football season by offering a free helmet from their huge product line of NCAA designs (click on any school for the full range of selections for that team). We’re going to call this the Jim Parker Memorial Raffle, in honor of the Helmet Hut co-founder and helmet historian who recently passed away — a great loss for the uni community.

To enter, send a blank e-mail with your name in the subject line to the raffle address (not to the usual Uni Watch e-mail address, please) by 10pm next Tuesday, September 8th. One entry per person, but anyone enrolled in the Uni Watch membership program at the time of the drawing can send four entries. The winner will be announced next Wednesday.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Graphic designer Sean Engelhardt has created a chart that tracks the Mets’ 2009 injuries. “I’m not trying to make any excuses or explain away anything,” he writes. “I just wanted to see the data in action since it seemed so absurd. I also think it’s a fascinating look at how a full season of baseball plays out. You can see how the starting rotation lined up then got mixed around, days when multiple relievers pitched, see who started (and against what team), consecutive-games streaks (and games-missed streaks), etc.” Really good stuff. ”¦ Jeremy Brahm was going through his closet recently and came across these Leaf mini-helmets. “I even had the whole set of 26 teams, which believe me was difficult when I was a kid,” he says. “I sent this over to [gumball helmet king] Bill Jones and he told me that he had a set too, but not the box. You can barely find any information for these online.” ”¦ And speaking of gumball helmets, look what Brinke Guthrie found on eBay. ”¦ Robbie Biederman has launched a new Detroit-centric T-shirt line. ”¦ New logos for Georgia State. Further details here (with thanks to Jameson Adams). ”¦ Germany’s home kit for the 2010 World Cup has been leaked. ”¦ Throwback-ish jersey and a 30th-anniversary patch for the Flames (with thanks to Stan Capp). … Very interesting article about Colt Brennan’s visor — recommended reading. ”¦ More headwear adjustments for David Wright, who went with a double-flap S100 last night.

Oregon Ducks playing on the blue turf tonight! I can barely contain my excitement…this could be a visual train wreck.

Can one of you with technical expertice please explain why some of the MLB teams who wear black jerseys with white NOB (White Sox, Rockies, Marlins) have such clunky looking NOBs with filled in letters (white letters with white negative space)? Every time I see it, such as last night’s Marlin/Braves game, I cringe. Who thinks that it is an acceptable look to wear something that looks so unfinished?

It’s because some of those teams have 3 or 4 colors of twill per letter. Leaving the bottom color (usually white) as simple and basic as possible makes them easier and faster to be sewn on. When the O’s had the 3 color NOBs

link (I made that jersey and patch btw!)

it used to drive me crazy, but we had to follow the way the first set was done by the manufacturer.

That Georgia State work is atrocious. Who’s churning out this garbage?

The fact that the type treatment in GSU is “sort of” serif/sans serif is a dead giveaway for poor quality work. It’s like they couldn’t decide. Both squared off and rounded edges? Come on!

Saying nothing about that panther thing …

I think the double-flap S100 looks a lot less awkward/Great Gazoo-ish than the single flap. Just more balanced and doesn’t make Wright look like as much of a bobblehead (that’s about the helmet, not a shot a David Wright, Mets fans)

First uni matchup in new Twins’ ballpark? St. Louis Cardinals April 2 & 3 (I think it is) for exhibition games.

Pete Rose got first hit in Metrodome, so I imagine will be only proper if Albert Pujols does in the same outdoors.

The Germany World Cup kit is sorely pushing my resolve to buy one in support. Not a fan. The stripe looks stupid, and the shield for the federation patch looked stupid in the late 90s. Why bring it back?

…or the greatest uni match up ever! Think about it, this is just a gold mine for uni watching. Good, or bad, it’s gonna be awesome.

With the double earflap choice by Wright that now adds him to the Mark Bellhorn Earflaps and Motor Kings team. However, the incumbent at 3rd was a childhood favorite of mine, Terry Pendleton. Does Wright replace him? I’d have to go with yes, I suppose. I hate to do that to the 1991 NL MVP, but Wright’s talent is just undeniable (although a move from the cavernous Citi Field to, say, Fenway, would be a great career move for him in my fantasy trade world).

Less Gazoo-ish but more Death Star Trooper-ish. link

In reading about the big helmet on david, i am reminded that once upon a time catchers didn’t wear shinguards, goalies didn’t wear masks, and bb players didn’t wear diabetes stockings on their arms. If the big helmet lets a player return sooner from an injury (i am assuming that’s the reason), what’s the difference. Presumably, he will abandon it in the future, just like athletes who have to wear protective face plastic do. (What, rip hamilton?) after all, kareem wore goggles and namath wore half a facemask. is the fact it looks ridiculous reason to not try it?

Probably not. I think the idiocy of adding black or “carbon” or “steel” to a color scheme is the supposed intimidation factor. Technically, I guess black and grey are “neutral” in the color world, but it still looks dumb when thrown in for the hell of it.

Basically, I don’t think players are going to feel any more bad ass wearing kelly green and royal blue.

So david wright kept his helmet on while running the bases? Hmm. If more and more guys start wearing them, I bet that everyone ends up switching to the old model once they get on base. Nothing would be a dead giveaway like Carl Crawford switching helmets right before stealing a base.

In addition, this new third jersey, seems to be borrowing heavily from the All Star game jerseys used when the game was played in St. Paul, which also seems rather odd, considering how meaningless All Star games are.

In addition, there is a website (icethetics) that shows the Anaheim Ducks centre ice, the logo that now graces centre ice – is strictly the webbed “D”, which this site, and I would agree, represents an improvement.

You mean, they did what the Dallas (nee: Minnesota North) Stars did when they recycled the All-Star jersey design for their jerseys? The NHL stopped using the star jersey in 1997, and the Stars introduced their alternate jersey in the same design in the same year.

Agreed. Loved the original greens. Admittedly the reds make for better TV and in-person viewing (and that’s a legitimate consideration, to be sure), but the look is just too “Christmassy.” Maybe make the sleeve/shoulder panel on the originals red? Always wondered why that wasn’t an option.

I love the Oregon “choose the uniform” feature.

“Steel” and black are considered neutral colors, that’s why they’re added to a lot of team palettes. I’m sorry to see the yellow pants go, but the green jersey, grey pants look is the best. It’s kind of retro Philly Eagles.

Black is not, by uniform evolution, neutral. White is neutral because it’s incorporation evolved from everyone being required to wear white jerseys roughly half the time. Prior to the mandate for white jerseys, many teams wore no white at all. Black is not suddenly neutral just because some study revealed that (surprise!) teams are perceived as “tougher” when wearing black…and scores of teams went scrambling for a black alt, or a new black uni altogether (easier than finding better players, I guess).

Silver/gray admittedly can be put in the “sorta neutral” category when used an alternative to white, largely owing to gray being so prevalent, by edict, in baseball for so many years that it had become commonplace as a substitute/alternative for white.

Not against black per se, just saying it was DECLARED “neutral” by designers, marketers and coaches; didn’t develop from the history of he game. It’s the current affectation, not the next result of a fundamental change in gamewear resulting from a rule change, or some such.

(And don’t somebody start with, “Well…cleats were black forever”. That’s just a lame argument. Black cleats weren’t neutral, they were universal because they were standard, the only thing available until the early 70’s. Nobody ever said, “Well, black is one of our colors cuz we wear black cleats”).

It’s an old timey script logo! They’re all based on a similar premise, ie, text. To that extent, yeah they’re similar. But the Wild’s is much better done, and when the Ducks did it it was not a revolutionary idea, it just hadn’t been used in hockey for a while.

    —Ricko
Black is nuetral in that it works well with most other colors. I’ve read studies that stated teams in red perceived as “tougher”. But red is hard to incorporate into existing color schemes.

(yeah, i know that’s from yesterday, but it’s fun to play with)
When did “steel” become one of Oregon’s colors?

Aw, hell, I’m still wondering when BLACK did.
(and don’t someone say it’s “neutral”; it isn’t, there’s no evolution behind that, someone just DECLARED it neutral…so now I suppose “steel” will soon be neutral, too. Hell, let’s just decide purple is neutral, seems that would be okay, based on the new rules of uni design, apparently.

    —Ricko
When were there ever rules?
For a long time, there were, kinda, design parameters, yes.

Teams wore their colors, often adding white cuz they wore it half the time anyway, and silver as an alt to white (owing to the baseball model).

Now days it looks like designers can’t handle that.

“It’s TOO HARD!!! Green, yellow and white only??? NOBODY can design a a good-looking uniform under unrealistic, unreasonable constraints like that!!!!! I simply MUST have BLACK! Work with me, people, WORK with me!”

I’m saying there’s a TREND to use black, yes. But, in the context of the game, there is absolutely no basis for it being “neutral” and certainly not “universal”.

    —Ricko

Again, didn’tsay don’t use it. Just bugs me when

Yes, I get that black is neutral as a color. Spent way too many years at a drawing board NOT to understand that.

But it’s not even REMOTELY what I’m talking about.

they (owners) should bite the bullet and allow some movement now (or in 2 years or whenever) than force things to stay the same hoping that someday the league will expand again

    /just my $.02
I don’t disagree, but expand to 36 teams over a few years (LA, Toronto, San Antonio and say Mexico City) – $6.0 Billion in total expansion fees – that close to $200M per existing clubs – and it could be 6 divisions of six, playing 18 games. – Money talks
There ya go. NFL owners may not get what they want, but something like that is what they almost certainly are dreaming of.

100% agree – and why does light or bright orange take such a beating, and yet light blue is so well thought of – i.e. San Diego Chargers classic retro uni. I actually think the Bucs uni is better than the Vols – as the red is a nice offset.

UCLA announced it WILL play in the Rose Bowl this weekend. Quite possibly could be by firelight.

Not making fun of the situation, not at all. Just pointing out a more than unusual circumstance. Some strange and disquieting visuals possible, that’s for sure.

A couple of additional comments on the worst uni list (which really probably isn’t worth our time)

    1. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers uni, what has to also be considered with that shade of orange, is that Florida does produces a few oranges, and if anyone seen an orange or a orange grove know the shade Tampa Bay used, was a lot closer to the shade of an orange than the Halloween shade that most teams that have orange as a colour, use.

    2. How can anyone say that the Tampa Bay uni is uglier than the current Cincinnati Bengals – there is simply no comparison – one is a complete mess, the other while you can question the jaundice pirate helmet logo, is quite a neat and vibrant uni.

It’s not so much the colors as the colors combined with Bucco Bruce. As Sam Wyche once said “Who the hell’s going to be scared of a guy with a feather in his hat winking at you?” It *might* have worked if they had brought in the current Jolly Roger & cutlass design and kept the same colors, but I doubt it. so either they’ve changed the font on the game jersey only, or they used a practice-style nameplate on the media-days jersey. also, Tebow’s red practice jersey doesn’t have a name on it…

I disagree with a lot of that list. I always liked the old Bucs unis. Same for the Pirates. My dad took me to a Giants game and when he offered to get me a cap I picked the visiting Pirates.

My opinion: the original Bucs colors should have been reversed, make red the primary color (and the color of the numerals on the white jerseys) and while you could have kept the Bucco Bruce, lose him on the helmet.

The Vikes and Rams (for two examples) don’t use their “official” symbols on their helmets. Neither do the Bears for that matter. So keep Bucco on the letterhead or in the corporate office, and if you want to put the skull-and-crossbones on the helmet, fine.

It would have been interesting to see, but I suspect other than the white helmet, it would have looked a lot like the KC Chiefs. Similar to the Houston Oilers, I think the Bucs uniform would have looked better if the red was a darker shade than scarlet.

One of the problems/issues with any NFL logo that features a human, inevitably that person is depicted as white. In this era of football, where 85% are African American – it does not seem quite right, which is why I suspect new logos stay away from any human depictions. Jax, Carolina, Houston, TBay’s redo. Titans etc

It sort of represents the last racial barrier in North American sports, while there are still a lot of white and native Americans featured on logos, has there ever been an African American? Here is a list of logos that feature an individual I can think of

    NFL:
    1. Minnesota
    2. Oakland Raiders
    3.New England
    4. Washington (native American)

    NBA:
    1. Boston
    2.Washington
    3. Golden State – ambiguous

    MLB:
    Pittsburgh
    Cleveland – native American
