When Indoor Soccer Was King

misl header

By Phil Hecken and Jim Vilk

Today, I’m joined by Jim Vilk, who is here to tell us about one of the more obscure sports, but one where they still wear uniforms. Indoor soccer. Yup. I remember that, a couple of decades ago, and it was pretty popular. I’m pretty sure there was a team that played in the Nassau Coliseum back then, think they were the New York Arrows. Might have even gone to a game — one of those deals where you clip enough coupons from a milk carton, you get free tickets — something like that. Anyway, the idea of watching soccer, played on a hockey rink with miniature golf grass laid on top was, shall we say, novel. Not my particular cup of tea, but who am I to say anything?

So, here we are, decades later, about to discuss a sport that apparently still exists. Actually, when it first started, it seemed pretty popular. I think even the Cosmos, of NASL fame, fielded an indoor team. But Jim enjoyed it then, and still does it now. He’s here with a look back at the halcyon days of the MISL (or “Major Indoor Soccer League”) and his choices of the top eight uniforms of the day.

In a bit of scheduling serendipity, Paul just yesterday ran a column featuring some of Jim’s DIYs (great stuff, Jim). So, before we hear about the MISL uni’s, let’s take a moment to meet Jim.

Phil Hecken: What got you into unis?

Jim Vilk: I’ve always liked the aesthetics of sports, sometimes as much as the actual game. I’ve always loved helmets, too. Growing up I wanted to be an astronaut or a football player, almost anything with a cool helmet. I like numbers, too – not math, just numbers.

PH: How did you find UW?

JV: I was checking scores on ESPN.com and noticed one of Paul’s Page 2 articles. I then discovered the UW blog and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s daily required reading for me.

PH: Do you have a unique or special uni?

JV: I don’t have many jerseys. I’m cheap and I like the feel of cotton better. I do have lots of NFL, CFL, USFL, MLB, MLS and NCAA t-shirts. I especially like the ones that look like a jersey. I do have a replica jersey of my favorite Pirate, Willie Stargell. I wish I still had my old softball uniform — we had jerseys that looked like the ’70s Tequila Sunrise Astros, only in blue. You could call them Tequila Moonrise jerseys.

PH: Obviously you have a passion for DIY projects. Do you do a lot of DIYs?

JV: I do a lot of DIY. I paint electric football teams in USFL colors, I made a replica of the Cavaliers’ Miracle of Richfield at the Coliseum using Lego basketball players, an indoor soccer game and a miniature curling game. I’m working on a little ski jump using electric football players and popsicle sticks. I used to have a DIY wiffle ball field in my back yard. You can still play there, but only the bases remain.

PH: Do you have a favorite uni?

JV: My tastes go from traditional to a little out there. You found out my favorite uni in this piece (which we’ll see below). I also love the ’50s New York Football Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, the ’80s Denver Nuggets, the early ’70s Houston Oilers with the blue helmets and the entire late ’70s to early ’80s Canadian Football League. I can’t forget the Killibrew-era Washington Senators, the ’71 Pirates with the mustard gold, the old St. Louis Football Cardinals, Penn State football and Villanova basketball.

PH: Wow. Thanks Jim. You’ve been a great contributor to the site, and I love your DIY stuff, which I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of in the future. OK, then, lets get on with the MISL:

——

With Paul and the ESPN gang looking back at the 1980s, it seems appropriate to include a very ’80s sport that became oh so tantalizingly close to being our fifth major sport.

The Major Indoor Soccer League was born in 1978 and ended in 1992. There was another MISL … which used to be the National Professional Soccer League … which used to be the American Indoor Soccer Association … which was hatched in 1984 as a rival to the original MISL. The 2nd MISL turned into the National Indoor Soccer League in 2008. As if that’s not enough soccer madness, the original MISL competed with the indoor arm of the North American Soccer League for its first few seasons.

Yes, there is indoor soccer to be found in America to this day, but it is a shell of what it was in the glorious 1980s. I hope the NISL grows and flourishes so I can do a piece on it in the future. Today, my focus is on the mid-1980s, when the MISL provided some of the best soccer, and in my opinion some of the best uniforms the sporting world has ever seen.

For a complete history of the MISL, go to this very excellent website. Now, please join me as we take a look at the Top 8 MISL uniforms of the 1980s. If it were a Top 10 list, then my beloved Pittsburgh Spirit would be included. Sadly, they must sit out this one.

Anyway, on with the countdown:

8. St. Louis Steamers: I’m a sucker for light blue – and for teams that use green and blue – so the color scheme and these cool uniforms assure the Steamers of a place on this list. The colors and stripes make me think of the Mississippi River and its layers of water and silt. I’m not sure why the sleeve stripes are green on blue, as opposed to the shoulders being blue on green. Here’s a look at the road uniform.

7. Chicago Sting: One of two former NASL teams who brought uni greatness to the MISL. Black and gold like my good old Spirit, but the Sting kicked their unis up a notch. Here’s a great look at the away uni, and another look at it next to the home kit. I like the sleeve numbers on the home whites and the subtle diagonal lines. The ’90s could learn a lesson from this design — a little goes a long way. I wasn’t a fan of the team, but I loved these unis. Great alternates as well.

6. Cleveland Force: Yeah, they had Darth Vader come out to begin one of the coolest player introductions you’ve ever seen. George Lucas eventually got wind of this and made them stop, but later he reached an agreement with them. Man, I couldn’t stand this team at the time, but I loved working their games. I was a souvenir and food vendor at the Richfield Coliseum. I used to wear a Spirit button and a Baltimore Blast button on my uniform — how I didn’t get canned is beyond me. Here is the road uni and here are front and back looks at the home uni. I liked the player names under the number. The Force folded in 1988. A year later the Cleveland Crunch formed, and they won three NPSL titles. Don’t let Cleveland fans whine to you about a championship curse! Thankfully they changed their name to the Force for a few years before they too folded. By that time I had become a fan. Don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone, so I’m glad I had a second chance to enjoy them, albeit briefly.

5. Baltimore Blast: My second-favorite team of all time, and my favorite current team. Yep, the Blast are still alive and … wait for it … kicking. The current Blast began as the NPSL’s Baltimore Spirit. When one of the original Blast owners bought into the new franchise he brought back the name. They won the inaugural NISL title this year, a year which marks the 25th anniversary of the Blast’s first title. In between they won four of the last six championships in the second MISL. The new Blast look nice but nowhere near as nice as this or this. That’s the late Stan “The Pizza Man” Stamenkovic in both pictures (not to be confused with Mike Stankovic in the home whites with him). Loved that nickname and loved that player! He loved scoring goals as much as he loved eating pizza and it showed in the stat sheets and in his physique. My hero. Towards the late ’80s the Blast tried a different slant on their unis, but those mid-80s ones were the best for me.

4. Kansas City Comets: Cosmic, man. Here are side and front views of the home whites, and here is a look at the visiting blues. A hint of purple in those diagonal stripes, but we won’t hold that against them, will we, Paul? Paul?? I didn’t see them play a lot, but they made an impression on me.

3. Minnesota Strikers: This was the other NASL team who jumped leagues and did it stylishly. The San Diego Sockers may have dominated both leagues, but they have to be content with their championships on this list. Actually, the Strikers had a 3-games-to-1 lead in the ’85-’86 championship, but lost to the Sockers anyway. Oh well, what did Billy Crystal say…”It’s better to look good than to feel good.” The Strikers were absolutely mahvelous, dahling, both at home and on the road (that’s against the Sockers, by the way, in one of their better home looks). Look carefully on the previous picture. There are parrots on goalkeeper Tino Lettieri’s jersey. Fun guy — he used to keep a stuffed parrot in the nets when he tended goal.

2. Los Angeles Lazers: You sort of see their road unis on the team page — that was the best I could find. The home whites show up better here. Another predominantly black and gold team, but owner Jerry Buss added a purple Laker trim to make them stand out from the others. Sorry, Paul, but I think these unis are so hot it takes Smokey the Bear to put out their fire. The logo and the abdominal stripes are just so ’80s. That means they’re timeless to me, but then again I still listen to Duran Duran.

Drumroll, please………

1. Tacoma Stars: Completely ignore the uniform you just saw on the team page. It doesn’t exist in my world. The Stars made it to the top of the list for these brilliant creations here and here. I know, I know, it looks as if Charlie Brown collided with Dan Issel or Alex English and fused into one being, but that is what makes it so endearing to me. Here’s a rear look at the home whites and the away blues. That’s right, I love these babies so much I had one made for my membership card. The Stars not only looked good, however, they were good. They were the only team to beat San Diego in a playoff series, and they were one game away from winning the ’86-’87 title. The Stars lost a thrilling game 7 to the Dallas Sidekicks before more than 20,000 fans packed into the Tacoma Dome. ESPN covered the series…unfortunately, I didn’t see it. Hear that, ESPN Classic?? If you showed USFL games for me you could show some of your old MISL coverage. Please?

Well, some of you may want to have my membership card revoked after this, but hopefully more of you enjoyed this look back at a fun league from a fun decade. Can’t wait to see your opinions.

——

Thanks Jim! Opinions of unis are totally subjective, so I can’t take any umbrage with your “top 8” or your views. I gotta say, tho — “became oh so tantalizingly close to being our fifth major sport”? Seriously? I know you were undertaking a certain amount of hyperbole there, but c’mon. Everyone knows there are only three major sports, anyway.

But great, great job. It’s probably safe to say there has never before been such a thorough look back at the uniforms of the MISL of the 80s on Uni Watch.

scoreboard

Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: You guys are proving too adept at this game, so the following scoreboard will probably prove to be a piece of cake. A couple of readers have asked that while you keep to the practice of posting the retrosheet or other link to the answer, in order to assist some of the readers who may not be so skilled at guessing the scoreboard, if possible and without revealing too much of the answer, in addition to posting it, could you sort of “talk us through” how you went about solving the scoreboard mystery? (How’s that for a run-on sentence?) In other words, what about the picture were clues and how did they assist you in solving it? Plus, how you solved it might be different (but equally effective) than how someone else solved it. OK? OK. So with that, Guess The Game. And tell us how you did so.

squiddie files

From the Squiddie Files: Another wonderful batch of Life archive photos from Lance “Squiddie” Smith comes to us today. Lance explains, “These aren’t really uni related and I don’t have much to say about them. I still think they’re interesting.”

The photos come from a set, one of which Lance had posted in the comments section some time ago. “A while back I posted a link to a Life photo of someone looking out from the scoreboard at Griffith Stadium,” Lance elaborates. “I’ve found that that photo was from a 1956 photo essay about how teenagers were spending their summer. They had one boy fixing TVs and a girl working as a life guard and so on. (The one boy who was fighting wargames with miniatures was obviously way ahead of his time.)”

With that, let’s take a look at what Lance has gathered for us. He’s broken them down into a couple subjects, but “Other than that I have no details. The photos are still pretty cool.” Thanks, Lance.

“Outside photos of the scoreboard from the field:” here and here. Beautiful shots, Lance.

“Outside shot of teen watching the game from a slot in the scoreboard:” here, here, here, and here. These are magnificent shots — how fun would it be to be that kid?

“Inside the scoreboard looking out:” More great pics here, here, here, as well as here, here, and here. I love the ‘classic’ undershirt and jeans look (I’m thinking “Fonzie” from Happy Days) of the kid inside the scoreboard.

“Working the pitch count display (WWDC must have sponsored Senator games in the 50s.):” More great shots here, here, and here.

“Lucky Strike cigarettes on hand:” Great find, Lance, such attention to detail have you!

Finally, Squiddie says, “This may be the best photo but it needs to be rotated 90 degrees.” Here it is all upright and proper-lookin’.

Great stuff, as usual. Lance concludes, “While my first thought was, ‘What a great summer job!’ I’m now thinking it would be pretty hot running that thing in July. Obviously there wasn’t any air conditioning and probably little ventilation.”

~~~~~~~~~~~
OK. That’s all for today folks. Everyone have a great Saturday.
    what about the Sockers!?
    link
    Pretty sure that they got started in the NASL before moving to the MISL.
    As a kid growing up in San Diego, Julie Veee was huge… double deuce, triple e, the one the only, Julie Veee!
    Good stuff on the MISL unis. I watched it every chance I got as a kid. My favorite part was always seeing the “goal” lights go off when the home team scored (living in south GA, we saw very little hockey on TV). Most were the same as the local hockey team that shared the building, but I distinctly remember one that was 2 plumes of flame going off above the goal. Any ideas as to which team it was? I certainly doubt you’d see it today with all the liability issues.
    Chicago Sting . Is it possible not to love link? As if the fat, angry bumblebee isn’t already great enough, he’s also wearing a skimmer hat to complete the look. (I guess it’s actually a “she” since male bees don’t have stingers.)
    Anyway, the Sting’s unis, colors and logo blew away those of their short-lived brothers, the link (named after the arena they played in, the Rosemont Horizon — how often does that happen?).
    Guess the scoreboard game link.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    How I got it:
    Based on the location and a certain link last season, I had my date range.

    From there I worked backwards and looked at the Reds’ rosters. I found the only season link played on the same Reds team as link.

    From there, I just looked at that season’s games where the Giants played in Cincinnati until I found one with a linescore that matched what’s on that scoreboard.

    I once saw the Detroit Express of the indoor NASL play at the Pontiac Silverdome. Never saw a MISL game live. Great article.

    link

    I liked the second logo better than the first. I think I still have a pennant with the second logo on it around here somewhere.

    The Tacoma Dome’s roof is laid out in panels that look like it was possibly inspiration for the pattern on the jersey. The outer shell of the dome is painted in a similar style, check this:

    link

    And I’ll post a pic of a beauty I have in my collection in a few minutes. I have an old Kansas City jersey, and I think this is the moment to show it off…

    Speaking of the 80’s-Great ESPN article, Paul…After watching many of the “America’s Game” episodes about teams from the 80’s on the NFL Network, I have a much deeper appreciation for unis during that time period. Made me realize how crappy modern uniforms are (See Bengals, Buccanners, 49ers, Vikings, Bills,Dolphins, on and on). How about the Chargers in yellow pants?

    I started going to Minnesota Strikers indoor games with my old girlfriend. It was the only sport she would attend in person. Early in the season it was sparsely attended, but as they made their run to the finals it really caught on and the building started to sell out. It was great fun and real madness seeing the (relatively new at the time) wave being done in the arena that small.

    Damn those Sockers! We had ’em down 3-1 and should have taken the title!

    Thanks for bringing back the memories of that playoff run.

    Everyone knows that Colorado Rockies baseball stole the name from Colorado Rockies hockey. Few remember that prior to Colorado Avalanche hockey there lived Denver Avalanche! indoor soccer, please don’t omit the exclaimation point!

    These unis need to make this list. Combine your green and blue, with the oversized logo and collars…a classic!

    Sheesh. Beaten by four minutes on the Tacoma Dome revelation.

    Anyhow, I think the inside view of the roof is much more illustrative of what I was trying to talk about…

    link

    Excellent work! I have fond memories of attending Force (and Crunch) games as a kid.

    Here’s the youtube of Cleveland’s first Championship since 1964.

    You’re right about the Sockers. They dominated everything…except when it came to their uniforms. I think that picture was one of their NASL jerseys, or from their first year in the MISL. They were solid, but to me the 80s were about solid with just a bit of flash.

    Don’t know if this has been posted yet, but here’s a nice Pro Football HOF gallery of AFL memorabilia, with some nice helmet/jersey photos:

    I’m guessing that was the Phoenix Inferno link

    I don’t know, you might see it today. I still can’t believe they have fireworks at NBA games these days…

    Thanks for the look back at the MISL. It was HUGE here in St. Louis, bigger than the NHL Blues for a number of years. I tried to follow the NPSL for a while, the St. Louis Ambush won a title in the 90’s, but it just wasn’t the same.

    MLS in St. Louis, please!!!!

    We also forgot that the NASL decided to have an indoor soccer season for a few years, before the league collapsed in both outdoor and indoor versions.

    It was indeed Phoenix. Those flames had to have been 30 feet high — cool stuff.

    (And what does that tell you about the popularity of the sport, that it was on TV so often?)

    Not sure if anyone saw the late Yankees game last night, but there was a pretty humorous uni-related play. Jorge Posada got tangled up with Chone Figgins on a pop-up in foul ground behind the plate, Posada knocked off his glove, but still made the catch barehanded.

    link

    Odd thing about that Griffith scoreboard – it had the strikes listed before the balls. Traditionally, in the US, it’s been the other way around (3-and-2). Japan, on the other hand, lists the strikes first (2-and-3).

    That’s right! Not only did ESPN cover it, USA Network had a game of the week (with the smooth Al Trautwig calling the games) and CBS even showed a few playoff games.

    Here you go, San Diego Sockers fans:

    Al Trautwig, and I believe Kyle Rote Jr. providing the commentary.

    Phil, this is what you missed not going to those Arrows games:

    If I could get a better shot of those NY unis, they might have had a shot at making the list…

    By the way, if anyone has some old pictures lying around, let me know. Obviously I found some stuff on the web, but there is a lot more stuff I can’t find. I’d especially love photos from the 83-84 season.

    flipping through the channels i saw school for scoundrels on, and one of the guys was wearing a detroit pistons FNOB Isiah Thomas jersey, where Isiah was on top and in smaller text no photo, but is this a real jersey?
My Umbro Kansas City Comets jersey:

    link

    Wow! A better shot than what I could find on the net. Thanks.

    By the way, just found a gold Spirit jersey like this on eBay: link

    Christmas is coming early this year…

    Have to plug my local team, the G-Men. Watched every pitch on TV. The Giants pitcher was totally unhittable- SD didn’t even come close. Been watching baseball for about 40 years- never seen a no-hitter, it was a privilege to do so. Amazing. And from the #5 starter, no less. Cain and Lincecum are each 10-2. If we get to the postseason, no one will want to us in a short series. Go Giants.

    The Force jerseys were the best in my opinion. My dad played for them in the 80s and it’s the only jersey that he doesn’t still have. He donated it to some charity auction or something.
    Tino Lettieri was awesome. I still have a stuffed parrot in that I got when I was four because of him.

    “The Avalanche! roars . . . indoors!” – great slogan remembered by those few.

    You missed the best thing about the MISL…the psychedelic orange ball!

    I loved that the Sting wordmark was taken from the movie.

    link

    And this is always the iconic Chicago Sting jersey, even if they wore different ones indoors.

    link

    Question for anyone, but if Squiddie visits, it’s about one of the Life pics It’s the final picture, inside the scoreboard, with the boy at the “Ball Strikes” control. The picture that’s Landscape shows a small hatch or something like that at his feet: what is it?

    In this particular case I decided to start with the trivia question – Googled “Woody Woodward sack of flour”. The player’s wiki page describes the incident and gives the date – September 4, 1971. From there it was a piece of, uh, cake.

    Yeah, if you didn’t get the idea from the straw hat (and JTH, I hadn’t heard the term “skimmer” since the last time I saw “Pride of the Yankees”) the typeface was supposed to make sure of it.

    the Thomas Jersey was real. i think he only wore that for one year. looking for evidence

    Yes. Isiah had one season where he wore his FNOB. I think it was 1985-86.

    I never imagined I’d be reading about the San Diego Sockers here on UniWatch. Crazy timing too, because I just learned yesterday that they are coming back to San Diego in the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL). You are absolutely right. They called it Rocket Red, but it was always orange to me.

    One Stars fan, when the league first started, thought the MISL was a “bastardization of the beautiful game.” In a way she was right. She changed her tune shortly after that. Yes, it was an illegitimate child of outdoor soccer, but it was my illegitimate child and I loved it anyway, especially the orange ball (and of course, the unis).

    Otherwise known as The Lost Years.

    Its great to see all those “classic” kits. I actually own a game used Pittsburgh Spirit uni.

    Off the subject, I was watching the Bucs and the Phillies last night and noticed that the vendors in Philly have the teams uniform number font on their gold vendor shirts…if this has been mentioned before, I apologize, but I thought it was quite slick.

    Scoreboard answer: link

    I got it by figureing out the date in 1971 when the Woody Woodward event occured. Then I could narrow it down by looking at Griffey’s number. He only wore that number twice on the same date as the Woody Woodward event.

    Holy cow! Thanks for the look back at the old MISL. I was at the Tacoma Stars game where they lost to the Dallas Sidekicks. That was a great game, went to overtime. I collected MISL trading cards when I was little. I remember the air of excitement in the T-Dome when we acquired Steve Zungul from San Diego. The beauty of the uniforms never occurred to me at that age, but it is clear now that they were pioneers!

    indeed…who knew?

    perhaps i shoulda clipped a few more milk cartons ;)

    I’m watching the Cardinals/Cubs game and have a question of perspective I’ve wanted to post for a long time. When you see the stripes on the Cardinals’ stirrups, do you see two blue-on-white stripes or a white field with blue-red-blue stripes? I’ve always seen the white field but have been seeing them as two blue-on-white stripes and I wonder if that’s just my eyesight changing as I get older or if the way the stirrups are worn changes my perspective on them.

When you see the stripes on the Cardinals’ stirrups, do you see two blue-on-white stripes or a white field with blue-red-blue stripes? I’ve always seen the white field but have been seeing them as two blue-on-white stripes and I wonder if that’s just my eyesight changing as I get older or if the way the stirrups are worn changes my perspective on them.

    its blue on a white field

    I play for a Congressional league softball team from Tennessee. The team is called Jack Softball, for Jack Daniels, of course. All players wear #7, of course, for Old No. 7 Whiskey. The name on the back of my jersey: Francoeur. Why? Because I had to wear #7, so what the heck. I will now physically remove the letters from the back of my jersey. That is all.

    If you look at the Matt Garza picture, you can see the Rays throwback hat has a grey under-bill. Did they just pull out some old authentic stuff out of the closet for this rather than make new ones?
Thanks for the look back at the MISL. It was HUGE here in St. Louis, bigger than the NHL Blues for a number of years. I tried to follow the NPSL for a while, the St. Louis Ambush won a title in the 90’s, but it just wasn’t the same.

    MLS in St. Louis, please!!!!
The Steamers drew as well as the Blues did for a while in the ’80’s. Players like Daryl Doran, Ricky Davis and Slobo Ilijevski were as well known in St. Louis as Brian Sutter Neil Lomax and Willie McGee in the Early 80’s.

    Also the Steamers logo was similar to a local bank called Boatmens bank.

    As far as I know, New Era isn’t selling the Rays throwbacks, at least not yet, (Ive been looking around for them since I saw they were going retro the other day) but I don’t know if that has anything to do with them producing anything new for the team.

    But true to the theme of throwback games, it’s fun to look back, but boy are those unis ugly. And this coming from a kid who wore those colors religiously when the Devil Rays came to town.

    Delta Air Lines catches some flak for their flight attendants’ uniforms:

    “In navy blue, the Delta Air Lines female flight attendants’ uniform dresses go up to size 28.

    But in the attention-getting signature red, the uniform dresses by designer Richard Tyler are available only up to a size 18.”

    Good thing the Brewers don’t have this policy, or Prince Fielder would always be dressed differently from his teammates.

    I played soccer as a kid and loved the Tacoma Stars. We lived just 5 miles form the Dome and tickets were nothing or free because they would give them to youth soccer leagues. I still have a couple programs somewhere and a pennant. This article makes me proud!

    Cool! Are you offering a package deal to buy the whole set?

    In Kansas City, the Comets’ attendance was neck-and-neck with the Kings in the seasons before they headed for Sacramento. That says something about the state of the NBA in those pre-Jordan days…..

    Did you know you can supposedly credit (or blame) the Comets and the MISL for smoke/lasers/mirrorball/techno music player introductions? The Comets were run by a couple of young guys, new to the sports world, and they decided to amp up the intros to pump up the crowd. It was quickly copied around the MISL, and the rest is history. Supposedly.

    One of those guys grew up to be Tim Leiweke, Phil Anschutz’ point man at AEG.

    There has been some great articles this week. Paul on the 80’s on ESPN. The DYI yesterday and today’s MISL info. With the soon to be demise of the Arena Football League (Article I read last night doesn’t look good for us AFL fans). If some one could do a best and worst of the Arena league might be cool.

    I started by using my baseball knowledge to look for players in the lineups who weren’t on those teams very long. I chose Todd Greene who happened to be on the Giants for only one season. So I went to 2006 and looked for the games the Giants played in Cincinnati. I looked through those 3 games and chose that one.

    I just noticed that they wore the black-billed Devil Ray hat which was actually a road hat. In that era, they wore black Devil Ray hats with purple bills at home or the much more common “TB” logo seen on the batting helmets.

    So it’s only a few years removed, the same people are probably there and they’re already screwing it up?

    That’s gotta be a record.

    Oh, man…MISL uniforms are right in my wheelhouse. My aunt had season tickets for the Force back in the Richfield days and I got to go whenever it wasn’t a school night. Best day of my young soccer career was when Joe Raduka was coaching me at a summer soccer camp and told me I blocked shots like Bernie James – Cleveland’s first King James, in my opinion.

    The Force’s home/away kits didn’t vary much in overall look over the years but there seemed to be slight variations between every season – the yellow would get more or less gold, the blue would go from a solid dark royal blue to subtle royal vertical stripes as they bounced from Shez to Patrick to Umbro to Erima (and maybe others) as their manufacturers.

    My uni collector prides are a vintage yellow Shez jersey with blue collar, and a blue road jersey featuring the famous “rocket red” balls in the logos around the arms (many replica jerseys just have white/uncolored balls). They’re conversation starters, even after all these years. At a bar in Columbus not too long ago, I was greeted by a half-drunk guy who just yelled “Benny Dargle!” at me. Kellen, your dad is still a hero to a bunch of 30-something dudes in Ohio.

    I don’t have the answer, but I’m gonna guess the answer is no.

    Anyway, I love a good throwback game as much as the next guy, but when you’re throwing back to a uniform that was worn 11 years ago, I think it’s time to put the brakes on. We can’t even bitch that they’re not wearing their pants correctly, because in this case, most of them are.

    Also, I actually own one of those purple-billed eyesores. I bought it in ′97 before the “TB” logo cap existed. I remember talking to the guy in the store trying to get his opinion as to whether I should buy the home or the road cap. He recommended the road version because “everyone’s gonna be wearing the home hat” after the team finally took the field.

    Despite his sage advice, I opted for the home one because if you’re buying something that ridiculous looking, you can’t do it half-assed and the home cap just had that extra cheese factor with the purple brim.

    I also own one of the original Diamondbacks caps. Black crown/teal brim — road cap, maybe? Whatever it was, it’s just as bad.

    Hey Ricko, since I like helmets so much, your Benchies was quite timely! When was the last time you ran one of these? I hadn’t seen it before today.

    Any MISL fans who can make it to Northeast Ohio – we should have a Uni Watch party at Whitey’s in Richfield. Either that place or Barney Google’s was the place to be after Force games. Let’s put on our best MISL gear and relive some good times!

    Guessed the score by going to Retrosheet to see the last time Junior had 425 ABs then went to through the 2006 splits to find the game against SF. Then it was simply checking the box score to the scoreboard.

    Both my parents and I worked for many, many years for the Milwaukee Wave, who played in the AISA, NPSL and MISL. My father started as a ticket salesmen, my mom was head statistician for many years and I did stats as well as worked summer camps with them.

    I have pictures of myself with Wave players as far back as 1985 and I have a number of jerseys from throughout the years. I literally grew up with that team.

    They are actually the longest continuously running professional soccer team in the US.

    Today’s post was one heck of a blast from the past.

    The Steamers’ ‘kits’, or jerseys at least, are the same design used by England in 1982, made by Admiral. I’ve never seen that design used by anyone else other than England until now, intriguing. Admiral were the pioneers of selling replica jerseys, which previously had only been available in kids sizes and were only loosely based on the real things. My first jersey ever was a 1984 Hull City home shirt made by Admiral, and Hull City are wearing a throwback of sorts in 2009-10, minus the red which was dropped from the palette in 1990.

In retrospect, I should have hated those ads, but as a kid, I loved it when the goalie got beat an the ball hit the banner instead of the net itself!

    Julie Veee. That’s a name I haven’t heard of in a long time. As a Portland Timbers fan growing up, we saw a lot of him and his great ball skills. One thing I remember about his uniform: he wore Nike running shoes instead of cleats, you know, the ones with the waffle soles. This was back in the day of hard turf he was the only one I recall who did this. If NASL had a Hall of Fame, he would definitely be a first ballot.
