Uni Watch DIY Project: Bill Veeck Would Be Proud

103.JPG

[Editor’s Note: Paul here. Got home from Baltimore very late last night — more on that tomorrow. Today’s post is from Ben Traxel (shown at right), who was inspired by a random post in the comments section. Phil compiled today’s Ticker. I’ll have a few words at the end. Enjoy. — PL]

By Ben Traxel

A while back I sent Paul pictures of the quilt my Mom and I made back in the ’80s. I’ve been wanting to take on another DIY project after seeing all the cool ones on the site in the past year, but I didn’t have any ideas that really materialized until Memorial Day weekend.

It started back on May 21st, when there was some talk in the comments about this super-cool St. Louis Browns logo. One person commented that the logo, or a portion of it, would look great on a hat as a DIY project. I responded that I thought it would look quite dapper on a hockey sweater. Something about how hockey puts the logo front and center has always led me to like that jersey style the best.

Anyway, I used AutoCAD to make a mock-up of what the Browns logo might look like on an old-time hockey jersey. It turned out really well, so I sent it to Paul, who put it in the Ticker [along with a Cubs concept that Ben also sent along — PL]. Then I remembered I had an old brown sweater in my closet that was a little too big. I dug it out and decided that this was the project I’d been waiting for.

First I went to Wal-Mart and stood like a real manly stud in the sewing aisle trying to figure out what I needed. Ended up with three sheets each of brown, orange, and white felt for 32 cents apiece. I also bought a bottle of fabric glue for $4.99, a beginner sewing kit for about $8, and a spool of brown thread.

Chris Creamer’s site had several additional Browns logos that I simply had to include — they were too good to leave off. Once I settled on which logo should should go where, I needed a uniform number. I didn’t know much about the Browns other than Eddie Gaedel so I did some research. I needed a number that was pretty blocky, not slender — something that would fill some space on the back. Then I came across Bobo Hollowman, whose entire career consisted of a two-month span in 1953 (the last year before the team moved). Might not sound like much, but he pitched a no-hitter in his MLB debut! Since his uniform number was a nice, wide 24 (and I have a son named Beau, close enough to Bobo), I thought it was perfect.

Next was printing the logos at the right size to use as templates, cutting out the felt, gluing the pieces together, and then gluing all the logos and numerals onto the sweater. The only thing that wasn’t felt and glue is the stitching on the baseball. That part could have been better, as it was my first time with a needle and thread, but overall, not bad. I haven’t sewn all the elements down yet, but I’ll get around to that when I have more time. (There are some additional photos here.)

I know some of the elements don’t match the Browns uniforms of the day (the number font, for example, is a slightly taller version of what the Red Sox use), but I made it look like I wanted and I like it! My wife said, “I think it’s really neat, hon, but please don’t wear it out in public.” Just for that, I think I’ll wear it to work tomorrow!

So that’s how I spent my Memorial Day holiday. And I did it without wearing a red hat.

Uni Watch News Ticker, courtesy of Phil: “This is not going to go over well on Uni Watch,” writes David McGee, as described in this article on the pants stylings of Southern Miss … More National disgrace? Steven Olsen found this picture of Ryan Zimmerman, (found on SI.com — scroll down). Steven asks, “It totally looks like the ‘s’ in Washington is missing. How ironic is it that one of the teams with the most uniform troubles had a uniform screw-up in front of one of the greatest uniforms in sports history? Anyway, just thought I’d send it your way in case you haven’t seen it yet.” … A followup: in Wednesday’s ticker, Doug Keklak noticed this Apostrophe Catastrophe. Tyler Maun writes: “I stumbled across a picture that nearly made me spit my beverage out slapstick comedy-style all over my computer screen. Today’s “apostrophe catastraphe [sic]” comes from the ballpark of my employer, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. I’m one of the radio broadcasters for the club, and I handle the bulk of our media notes/game recaps/press releases, etc. (Don’t worry, I was never in charge of signage.) While in my baffled stupor that our humble abode would have ended up on Uni Watch, I took the elevator ride down from the press box to check out our concession stands which, indeed, do have a bizarrely and incorrectly shaped and placed apostrophe in front of “Dogs.” On all four of them. As a member of the grammar gestapo, I’m a little mortified that this has happened on my watch, but I’ve only worked here for a few months. I’ve mentioned it to the (hopefully) proper authorities, and it will (possibly) be corrected at some point. Apparently the logic was because there’s no “hot” in front of “dogs,” the apostrophe was warranted. Seeing as how “hot dogs” isn’t one word, I’m not buying it. This blemish is made all the more embarrassing when you consider that we hosted this a couple of weeks ago (three entries down). Whoops. That was to make fun of the Winston-Salem Dash. All night, we referred to them as the “Winston Hyphen Salem Dash” or the “Winston-Salem Hyphens” and tried our best to educate the masses in the ways of proper punctuation. Somebody here must be busting open a nice batch of crow to eat this morning. We’re actually a very Uni Watch-friendly franchise, with our team required to rock “Pelican blue” (read: powder blue) stirrups for every game. In fact, we were the featured team in the Wall Street Journal story about stirrups a month or two ago in which Paul was quoted. I’m proud that my first job as a Minor League Baseball broadcaster has come with a team that “Gets It (TM).” … Christopher Falvey was watching a few days ago and noticed some guy had “NOLA” (my first thought is the abbreviation for New Orleans, LA) on the back of his jersey. He thought for a second that somehow they were doing a tribute to the city of New Orleans, which would have been strange. Turns out there’s a guy on the team with the last name of Nola. … With details now emerging on the upcoming Civil Rights Game, Joe Owen found this from the Cincinnati Enquirer: “On Saturday, the Reds and White Sox will wear uniform jerseys circa 1964, the year the Civil Rights Act was passed to outlaw racial segregation in schools, public places and employment.” He’s not sure what exactly they mean by “circa”, but he’s guessing we’ll see “fauxbacks” of these for the White Sox (Powder blues!) and these for the Reds (Ice Cream man) … John English has never seen this logo before (the description reads: “This celebrates the New York Islanders winning the Stanley Cup. Says Islanders in the middle. Stanley cup on top and 2 hockey sticks. It is very high quality”). He asks, “Have you?” … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Brinke Guthrie noticed that the New York Giants & Timex have inked a sponsorship deal, with the watch logos to go on the jerseys … Rob McGill found a beauty, and would be remiss in his duties as a Uni Watcher if he didn’t direct a spotlight on the esteemed Alex Trebek, rocking a Habs jersey as a guest panelist on this 1980 episode of Card Sharks (If you’re impatient, you can simply scroll to the 1:20 mark) … Dan Auricchio notes that JC Romero has been kicking it old-school on the road so far this year (assuming 2007 is old school). He noticed this during the Mets/Phils game on June 9th, with Romero rocking the pre-2008 100% wool New-Era caps with the grey underbrim. This picture is from his first game back from suspension, but the same hat (writing and all) was worn for the Met game. Second picture is the now-official New Era cap, with the black underbrim. … The Hungry Hungry Hipster has some information of interest on the Stillers “Batman” jerseys: “I found some really interesting info on the 1967 Steelers jerseys, which were unique because of their yellow shoulders. Before reading the story of these jerseys, here’s what they looked like: Front, Back, and in a Team photo. And here’s the story behind these jerseys. … Finally, Teebz received an email from a friend who suggested he check out The Phoenix Pub blog. The author, under the pseudonym First Derivative, is proposing a Sabremetric system in which NHL defencemen can be ranked. It’s a pretty cool idea, but it’s sitting in the “theory” stage right now as he works through the finer points. If you have a suggestion, make sure you throw your idea in his comment section!

And a quick word from Paul: Good to be home. Big thanks to everyone who showed up last night in Baltimore — great people, great time. I’ll have a full report either tomorrow or early next week, depending on how quickly I sort through all the photos and such.

Super-duper thanks to Phil for steering the ship so expertly in my absence, and to everyone who helped things run smoothly when I was dealing with, well, you know. What with my travels and the nasty case of Real Life that I’ve had to deal with lately, my presence on the site has been diminished, but I look forward to getting back to full Uni Watch throttle next week. Thanks again for your patience, understanding, and support — like I’ve said before, a writer couldn’t hope for a better group of readers than you folks.

    Nice job on that Browns sweater. It’s only a matter of time before I sit down and do a DIY project.

    Thank heavens Southern Miss is gone. While watching their games, I couldn’t help but root against them.

    The pants flapping in the wind on their pitchers and the atrocious font used for “Southern Miss” … somebody needs to get thee to a tailor.

    Trax, you did a great job on the Browns DIY. I’m a big fan of the Brownies (lovable long-time sad sacks with Veeck at the helm = old-tyme phun) and you are a whiz with patterns. I’m pretty envious of the DIY stuff that I don’t have the patience to do myself.

    Great little item on the patches for the FIFA Confederations Cup posted over at the US Soccer Blog:

    link

    Is it me or does the Southern Miss article read like Ralphie’s theme from “A Christmas Story”?

    Very simplistic.

    I have to agree with every word of that. Sad story, great baseball town and I’m a sucker for Brown and Orange. Incredible DIY project! I’d wear that jersey/sweater everywhere.

    Where did you get that “Evil Empire” T-Shirt? I have a “Jesus Hates The Yankees” T-Shirt that I love. And Evil Empire T would become my second favorite.

    Ben Traxel!!! BEAUTIFUL DIY PROJECT!!! love the detail and the imagination with the different logos and the number font. really great work!!! good to see another autocad guy too! keep up the great work, it’s gets addicting!!!

    That’s probably not a screw-up on Zimmerman’s Nationals road jersey. It’s one thing to leave out a letter when they’re sewn down individually, but the “Washington” logo is two pieces of script (broken up with “hington” going on the top of the placket). The placket is probably just covering up the “s” in that shot since his jersey is bunched up.
great job, ben

    just conceptualizing link, much less bringing it to fruition…awesome
Traxel for President! Or maybe just Traxel for Official United States Imagery Czar. Or maybe Traxel for more medication. Whatever. This dude is bonkers in the finest way possible. [I love that his response to his wife’s plea to not wear the sweater in public is to head for the door.]

    An astonishing, loopy contribution to the field. And all for a team with the best colors and iconography in the history of organized baseball. I think. Maybe.

    This is random thought I wanted to put out there. When I was playing fast pitch softball as a kid my teams were normally sponsored by the usual sort of companies, like pizza places and grocery stores. One season, however, I played on a team with “ABP Recycling” on the chest. This seemed innocent enough until, while talking to the son of the sponsor I found out that I was representing, “Animal By-Product Recycling.” At that point I didn’t want to know anything else about the source of my jersey. Anyone else have a similarly disturbing uniform experience?

    I find it interesting that the 1967 Steelers jersey is only now being made by Mitchell & Ness — but with the proviso \”Current Players Only.\” So, no Ron Mexico, Theo Bell, Paul Lukas, or Lynn Swann, huh?

    awesome job ben. i am planning to make some hockey sweaters for my family this christmas with my brother’s high school and ac/dc for my sister.

    also, thanks paul for visiting baltimore. i had an awesome time and met some great uniwatch readers. i felt like i knew all of you for a long time. i look forward to having another baltimore meeting in the future.

    Thanks for the props on the project from everyone! I really get off on that stuff for some freaky reason, another OCD guy. I was surprised when I clicked on the site this morning and saw it. Got the Evil Empire shirt across the street from Yankee Stadium last summer. Made a NYC trip, never had been there before, just to see the Stadium before it was destroyed. Sorry Mets guys, Shea wasn’t such a draw, especially as a Missouri guy and a Cards fan. Anyway, my life is spent on AutoCAD as an architect so that is really all I know. It definitely won’t be my last DIY, just have to keep checking the comments for more inspiration from you guys!

    ABP Recycling. That’s nice.

    Not exactly disturbing, but strange…

    In my first year of LL, the sponsor on the back of our shirts was simply “CIA” and nobody had any clue if it was actually the Central Intelligence Agency or some random person’s initials or something else entirely.

    It wasn’t until we got our little yearbooks at the end of the season with all the team photos and whatnot that we found out it stood for something like “Credit Industries Associates.”

    Similar story for the sponsor of my brother’s first team. It was “The Prime Interest” (or “The Prime Intrest” as it said on some of the shirts, including my brother’s). Again, no clue as to what it meant. (Was the Fed sponsoring the team?) until late in the season, we found out that a local bank was the sponsor.

    And by the way, kick-ass sweater, Ben.

    Come to think of it, I’ve got an orange and brown hoodie that might just look really nice with that crest on it…

    Interesting. I played on a little league team that was sponsored by three initials as well: FBI.

    We also were curious if the FBI was the government agency. Turns out, it was just Farm Bureau Insurance.

    My son’s Babe Ruth team, for which I was an assistant coach, was sponsored by Edina Realty. No objection to that, but the navy hats with a yellow-gold visor had white felt letters “ER” side by side.

    Was the height of that TV show’s popularity and I was always afraid I’d be wearing my “ER” hat, walk into the aftermath of a convenience store holdup or something, and be expected to treat a sucking chest wound.

    —Ricko

    growing up, there was a team (not the one for whom i played) called the “knights” who were sponsored by the first union corporation

    I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning while driving to work and Greeny did a teaser before a commercial break that was something along the lines of “Does baseball need a uniform rule for one of its major problems? Find out next.” or something.

    I got all excited thinking, YES finally they’re going to get those ugly baggy pants pulled over the shoes taken care of!

    Turns out the uniform rule (read: standard rule) was about how writers would handle voting for juiced up hall of famers. Booooo.

    I don’t remember any of my Little League sponsors…there was one team sponsored by a funeral home, one by the local Lord & Taylor (swank department store), a couple car dealerships…

    The unis in my town’s Little League were pretty weak. The caps were all the same, with a block “M” (first letter of the name of my town); caps were in team colors. The teams were named after major league teams except for one, which was my team (the Blue Stars). Town name and team name in pseudo-script across the front of polyester pullover tops. Regular gray pants for all, plus team-color stirrups. White sannies. On the back were sponsor names over white numbers. (The yellow team, the Pirates, had black numbers).

    Interesting: the uni tops were numbered by size, e.g. the smallest was #1, largest was #55. I was a small kid for my age, so most years I got single-digit unis which was perfect for infield, where I played. One year, though, my family was on vacation when they were handing out unis at the start of the season, so I missed it and had to take the only one left, which was the XXL #55. I looked kinda like the St. Louis Browns’ own Max Patkin.

    I play in a softball league that has a “real” FBI team. They have shirts but no hats (actually my team got demoted to the “B” League this year so we will not be playing them).

    A few years ago they got permission from the league to cancel a game on the morning of (against league rules). I was joking about the FBI having to make big raids that day–turns out there were two FBI raids locally on the news that night.

    Very nice felt logos on that sweater. Good job.

    On a different note, my computer crashed and I’ll have to recreate my Marlins uni-tracker. Grrr!

    hey mike, check your email

    Overheard in the tunnel at Giants Stadium just before kickoff next fall…

    What time is it?

    TimexValuePricedPreciseTimingInstrumentsGametime, WHOOOOO!

    If I must say, this quote:

    “There was a variety of reasons we wanted to do this deal. First and foremost, getting two great icons together. The Giants franchise and the Timex brand have a lot in common. And we’re all about performance…So the fact that we can name the training facility and corporate headquarters the Timex Performance Center is very, very good for us.”

    …makes me want to puke. Fingers down the throat, projectile style. God damn what are these idiots drinking?!?
Forgot to mention. Those ’67 Steeler jerseys are fantastic.
I never thought so before, but after reading the story about them, I kind of like them. Plus, the season they wore them was the year I was born, so I may have to DIY that one at some point.

    re: Sponsors
    Mentioned it before, but my Monday night slowpitch team is sponsored by Absolute Bail Bonds.
    No, our jerseys don’t look like the Bad News Bears.
    But were it up to me, they would.

    Great job indeed, Ben!

    Paul, are you coming to Cleveland or Pittsburgh? You should have a gathering at PNC Park. There will be seats aplenty I’m sure, and I’d make the 2-hour drive to attend.

    Sounds a bit like my league (the aforementioned CIA-sponsored team). Uniforms were colored t-shirts and matching caps with a block P (this was the first and only team I was on where we didn’t have adjustable/mesh-back caps — they were solid fabric with elastic at the back). We could keep those, but we had to return the white pants and matching stirrups at the end of the season.

    The team names on the fronts of the shirts were just radially-arched block letters with NFL team nicknames. There was one exception. The red team was the Pirates for some reason. I was on the burgundy team. Redskins? Nah, the Bears of course. None of the other team colors made sense except the black team, which was the Falcons.

    Ben, great DIY! Turned out sweet!

    As for the Baltimore visit last night, it was very fun. I had a good time meeting some of my fellow UW’ers. Lot of great unis on display, too. And Wieters hit his first HR! Good times!

    And when your team walks into the bar after the game with “BAIL BONDS” on your shirt, does the entire bar empty out the back door? :-)

    As with most places the local businesses sponsored all the little league teams in my hometown growing up. The best name (and the one I played for) was sponsored by the local pharmacy and the team name was “Pee Wee Pills”
…NFL team nicknames. There was one exception. The red team was the Pirates for some reason.
Growing up we had the MLB team names and (usually) colors. So it was always cool if you were on the Sox or Cubs, even if your team stunk.

    Modern practice seems to lean towards generic names, especially with girls teams IMHO. Red Thunder, Flowerific…

    One thing hasn’t changed. Boys or girls, then or now; there always seems to be one coach in every league who was a Marine Corps Drill Instructor and he/she comes with that same attitude, same haircut and same voice. :-)

    A blogger on the link asks the obvious question as to which Oriole logo is the best. Everyone knows it’s the cartoon bird from the hat in the 60’s/70’s.

    Most of the comments only mention hats but there are plenty of other link to choose from.

    Just to nit-pick, but the 1967 Steelers jerseys that have been referenced here were also worn in 1966 as well.

    And they are my favorite Steeler jerseys of all time.

    As a kid, we played for actual sponsors (I played for Hut A/C [air conditioning] and eventually LYC [Latonia Youth Club]). Nowadays, my nephew plays for the Erlanger Orioles. It was always much better when your team had its own identity. I guess they use pro team names to “make the kids feel like they’re stars!” Bleh…

    Interesting you mentioned that. The girls’ softball Little League in my town named all the teams after Native American tribes. I believe there were Mohawks, Iroquois, Algonquins and one other. Senecas, maybe. Oddly enough there was no “Lenni Lenape” which was the predominant tribe in this part of New Jersey.

    I have to say, the Orioles have about the best set of historical logos from which to choose. Especially if you’re willing to consider link.

    Too bad I didn’t have a camera lat night, but there were some stylin’ members of Congress last night at the 48th Annual Congressional Baseball Game at Natinals Park. Few stirrups and a couple instances of elastic waistbands on the old men, but each of the members choose uniforms (most of which are personalized) of some significance to their district.

    some uniforms on display:
    * Altoona Curve
    * old school grey flannel Detroit
    * D-Backs softball ensemble
    * William & Mary
    * Mets pinstripes
    * Padres camo
    * LSU
    * Anderson University
    * a couple of Legion and high school teams
    * UDub
    * Georgia Military College
    * New Britain Rock Cats
    * and two different members in matching Cards home unis

    Linda Sanchez just had a baby and so was on the “pregnancy reserve.” In years she plays, she wears a Long Beach State University uni No. IX for Title IX.

    Due to unanticipated revelations, Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., did not (gasp!) show up in his UNLV uniform to play.

    I often wondered why they stayed with the black helmets in the late 60s (aside from the obvious “Real men wear black” excuse). Until the Chuck Noll era, their best season was 1963. If I read correctly, they wore gold helmets all year until the last game of the season. If they would have beaten the Giants they would have gone on to the Championship game, so they come out in intimidating black helmets…and promptly get beat 33-17. I’m not superstitious but I’d have ditched the helmets the next day.

I noticed that jacket when I watched it the other night. That movie is full of great outfits. There was some kid wearing a rad KFC t-shirt. I also really liked one of the suits that Toby Whitewood’s dad was wearing. Toby Whitewood was kind of the straw that stirred the drink on that team.

    We’ve got a slowpitch league where a local Irish tavern sponsored us. To my amusement the shirts they graciously provided (after seeing our old, rather embarassing outfits but with good high-socks) had the fraternally popular Celtic phrase “pog mo thoin” across the back. After a few games I broke the news to my well mannered teamates that they’re proudly displaying “kiss my arse” across their backs. Thankfully it’s vertically arched lettering.

    Paul, are you coming to Cleveland or Pittsburgh? You should have a gathering at PNC Park. There will be seats aplenty I’m sure, and I’d make the 2-hour drive to attend.

    Jim, you missed this.

    Had the Steelers gone from the pits to the penthouse only a few seasons earlier, they might still be wearing them.

    I like that one. But my favorite is my orange “Duck the Fodgers” tee. Haven’t gotten to wear it since I started taking my 3 year old daughter to games.

    My wife and I are gluttons for punishment. In addition to our two girls, we took our 8 year old niece, 7 year old nephew and a 7 year old friend to the diner for dinner.

    No, I did not drink.

    If I had I might have missed the uni-gold that I noticed on NFL Live on ESPN.

    They were reporting on the Bengals when I noticed Senor 85 wearing a Schutt with a white chinstrap.
    They then interviewed him in front of his locker where a Revolution with an orange chinstrap was visible behind him…more helmet hijinks…I think so.

    Then I returned to the world of Shirley Temples and Chicken fingers.

    Oh, and I just HAD to get the original Bad News Bears from the library for research purposes…Season One of Mad Men will have to wait.

    In the transition between bench coaches from Vince to Bryan, somebody interviewed the Bengals’ equipment manager. He mentioned how 85 liked to dress things up to show off. White chinstraps are standard issue and the only accepted color, but according to the manager, 85 is an adult, so it’s his prerogative to wear something other than what is given to him.

    Bad American? America has nothing to do with it. Nor are you a bad person. I don’t care to see the new version, but I highly recommend you see the original. It is so funny, and so poignant. I figured you guys would be the best ones to ask about this…

    I have an adjustable hat, and the plastic strap is about to split. I think I remember seeing a little scrunchie type product to put over the strap to keep it together, but I can’t for the life of me find any such product online. So I guess my question is (other than wrapping the thing in duct tape) how would you guys address this type of situation?

    The only part of Eight Men Out I saw was towards the end. I believe Bill Irwin had a small part, and a rare speaking role. For those of you with kids, Bill Irwin is the original Mr. Noodle on Sesame Street. He also played the “flying man” in the traveling circus on Northern Exposure.

    Are you SURE that isn’t Juan Pierre? The Franklin batting gloves lead me to believe it is Pierre. That, and the hat, and the fact I don’t think Lofton is in the bigs anymore, let alone on the Dodgers.

    Not to mention Kenny Lofton hasn’t played since 2007 and hasn’t played for the Dodgers since 2006.

    I love it when sports news sites use photos that are clearly outdated while referencing a game that’s going on. MLB.com does this quite often, and here’s an example from tonight:

    link

    The caption is “Right fielder Andre Ethier leads the Dodgers with 11 homers this season.” But that photo is from 2006, because (1) that’s the last time Ethier wore TPX batting gloves, (2) that’s when the brutal Nike polkadotted sleeves ran rampant in the big leagues, (3) Cool-Flo helmet, which Ethier no longer wears, and (4) the grey outline on the LA sleeve patch has since been removed.

    Is it that hard to find a recent photo?
