Back Home In Omaha

[Editor’s Note: With the College World Series upon us, Omaha resident Bryan Redemske checks in with his annual CWS survey. I’ll see you down in the Ticker. — PL]

By Bryan Redemske

We often make a big deal about tradition here at Uni Watch. Changes to our favorite teams’ uniforms, colors, or ballpark tend to ignite passionate pleas for the status quo.

In terms of college baseball tradition, Omaha has the market cornered. Since 1950, Rosenblatt Stadium has been the home of the men’s College World Series. Next year will be the final CWS at the stadium on the hill. In 2011 it’s moving to a downtown stadium called TD Ameritrade Park.

Rosenblatt Stadium will be demolished, and the land will be handed over to Henry Doorly Zoo, which will probably use it for monkeys. Or maybe, just maybe, those pandas will finally come to Omaha. Pretty sweet, huh?

As long as we’re talking about tearing things down and destroying tradition, it’s a good time to welcome Arkansas to the College World Series. Nobody kills baseball fashion tradition like the Razorbacks. Here’s a look at their crimes against the sport, along with the rest of the bracket. If you need me, I’ll be out back parking cars on my lawn ($20/game).

Arkansas
Oh, Arkansas. What the hell? Adidas was to blame for the whole football uniform thing last fall, so we may as well keep it up. Here’s the jersey seen most of the time, in white and red. As you can see, it’s equally offensive on the front and back. If there’s a matching gray set out there, I couldn’t find pictures. And I’m not going to go looking for it, either.

Last year’s pinstriped whites are also in play, as is a throwback-style cream-colored set.

LSU
The Tigers are back in Omaha for the second straight year, which makes bar owners happy. LSU fans take over bars for a week at a time, especially now that RV parking has been limited at Rosenblatt.

The good thing about LSU being in Omaha is the familiarity. The yellow and purple jerseys have been largely unchanged for years. Seems like having two sets of white uniforms (pinstriped and plain) is a bit much, no? There’s also a white-crowned hat that sometimes appears with the purple jersey.

Cal State Fullerton
For the past few years, I’ve crowned Fullerton the winner of the uni bracket at the CWS, mostly because all of their looks are consistent. Many teams use several different seasons’ worth of uniforms all at once, which saves on laundry but annoys people (me).

The Titans win again this year, even though there are a few new bits hanging in the closet. The traditional white and gray pinstripes are standard, as is the blue alternate jersey. There’s a second blue alternate that’s completely unnecessary but still looks OK. Same for the white-crowned lid.

North Carolina
Nike teams are a bit of a pain in my ass, at least for this annual roundup. Elite teams like UNC are often oversupplied, with about nine different jerseys on hand. Refreshingly, the Tar Heels seemed to have exercised a bit of moderation this season.

The standard sleeveless whites are around, but a new Carolina blue jersey has been added, along with a similar navy jersey. Too bad they still have the Nike pit-stains on the white and gray sets.

Virginia
Perhaps it’s because I like Charlottesville, or maybe it’s because it’s similar to Fullerton, but damn if Virginia doesn’t look good.

Two sets of whites ”” old and new ”” along with navy and orange. Pretty awesome, until you see this. What the … you were so close, Virginia. So close.

Southern Mississippi
The Eagles make me neither excited nor angry. I guess that’s like a win compared to the stylings of some of our less civilized CWS attendees.

White, gold, gray. That is all.

Arizona State
I’ve determined that Arizona State officials don’t want us to see their uniforms. Because seriously, ASU media people, I’m not downloading anything to get to the multimedia viewer. No way.

Here’s what I did find: Home whites and a maroon alternate. The Sun Devils have traditionally been well-dressed, so this media (me) blackout is puzzling.

Texas
Finally, we get to Texas. Another Nike school. Here’s the good thing about Texas, though: They haven’t changed much over the past few years. Consistency is king here, once you get past the overkill thing.

White vests, white sleeves, white pinstriped vests, burnt orange, gray. That’s actually not horrible, considering Florida State had nine jerseys last year, followed closely by North Carolina’s eight. [Also worth noting: All of the Texas jerseys are pullovers with one-button collars, much like MLB’s batting practice jerseys. — PL]

And yes, that’s the landscape of college baseball today: five jerseys doesn’t seem so bad. Help us, Johnny Rosenblatt’s ghost ”” you’re our only hope.

Ah, crap. There’s a lady trying to double-park her Dodge Caravan out back. If she gets in there sideways, no way that black Corsica is going to fit. Back to work!

Some other news of note: Paul here, with a few tidbits that may interest you:

• As you may know, the very wonderful rock band Wilco will be releasing a new album later this month and is already on tour to support the new record. You may also know that four of the band’s shows next month will be held at minor league ballparks. But what you can’t possibly know, because I haven’t told anyone until now, is that I’ll be raffling off two pairs of tickets for each of those shows.

I’ll have more details on this during the week of June 22nd. Just wanted to get you excited about it now.

• True story: When Kirsten and I arrived at the WNYC studios yesterday for our radio interview, they sat us down in front of two microphones — one green, one purple. You can guess which one I took. As for the interview itself, our time slot got cut in half because the guy who was on before us (who happens to be the Governor of New York State) ran long, so we didn’t really get to discuss anything in any kind of depth. But if you want to hear very cursory chatter about Candela, Uni Watch, and “I’m Calling It Shea,” you can listen to the segment here.

• One problem with the Candela exhibit has been that the City Reliquary is only open on weekends. But they’ll be open next Thursday, June 18th, from 6pm-10pm, and their very nice back yard will be available for lounging, drinking, etc. You know what to do.

Uni Watch News Ticker: My favorite item of the day comes from Nolan Brett, who writes: “Toronto brought in reliever Jason Frasor in the 7th vs Texas last night, and catcher Raul Chavez realized his signals weren’t getting through. So he just reached over and stuck the back of his hand in the chalk, turning his hand and fingers white.” ”¦ Major news at NHLuniforms.com, where the site has gotten a serious upgrade. ”¦ Here’s a good view of Derek Jeter not wearing the Yankees’ cap patch (with thanks to Steve King). ”¦ Ten more illustration scans have been added to our gallery from The Professionals (with continued thanks to Jim Mellett). ”¦ In a related item, here’s an interesting note from Noel Basnight: “A few of the images from The Professionals seemed familiar, so I checked my library. My search uncovered a ‘playbill’ from an NFL-sponsored show called The 100 Yard Canvas. Several of the images were identical to the ones from The Professionals. I’m including scans of some of the full-page color images (trying to avoid overlap in the process), as well as the cover sheet and foreword.” Never heard of this show before — anyone know more about it? ”¦ Jason Smith commissioned Rob Ullman to do this illo of his girlfriend, Jennifer. “The resemblance is incredible — Rob is a great guy to work with,” he reports. ”¦ Sad news from helmet collector Jeff Fedenko, who reports that Helmet Hut historian Jim Parker passed away this week. Jim had weighed in here several times on helmet-related issues, most recently regarding the Lions silver/gold debate. My sympathies to all who knew him and to the Helmet Hut community. ”¦ I haven’t seen the new Eastbay catalog, but Chris Edwards has, and reports the following: “In the football equipment section they had a picture of a line of football players in full uni. They were Nike schools — Penn State, Florida, Ohio State, etc. — and they all had either the team name or school initials in embossed or raised lettering on the thigh pads.” Not positive, but this appears to be part of the undergirdle, or maybe part of the pad itself. Not sure if this will be showing up on the field or if it’s just for the ad. ”¦ Here’s a new baseball glove brand I hadn’t heard of before. Bizarre designs here and here (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ DIY project of all time: Two Arkansas convicts escaped (and were later recaptured) by making their own Arkansas prison guard uniforms. Details and photos here (big thanks to Steve Lega). ”¦ When you lie down with dogs, expect to get fleas. ”¦ Back in 2007, Mario Fontana wrote an entry about the charity Wiffle Ball tournament he participates in. For this year’s edition, he created an awesome logo that he’s making available on shirts and patches. For details, look here. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Audio Outmania! Josh Outman discusses his stirrups, among other things, about a quarter of the way through this radio interview. ”¦ Plenty of Broncos uni discussion in this article (with thanks to Brad Shannon). ”¦ The minor league Florence Freedom will wear special police and firefighter tribute jerseys on Sunday (with thanks to Jim Ransdell). ”¦ Mark Fightmaster reports that the city of Cincinnati has a new logo. ”¦ Oh man, look at this: In happier times, GM had its own hockey team (great find by Mike Hersh). ”¦ With ads on uniforms looking more and more inevitable, locker rooms are gonna have a lot more signs like this one (with thanks to Chad Todd). ”¦ Washington State will unveil new football uniforms tonight (with thanks to Spencer Bowen). ”¦ The All Blacks have a new alternate jersey — and it’s white, paradoxically. Details here (with thanks to Haydn Green, who also came up with a bunch of photos from the 1965 Springbrook/South African tour of New Zealand). ”¦ Very odd to see pillbox caps for American League teams. Kyle Pineda found that auction, and also found this. That can’t be right, can it? ”¦ The NBA will be playing preseason games in Mexico and China this fall. Here are the logos they’ve come up with for the occasion — not bad.

Looking back, looking ahead: Thanks yet again for all the supportive words and thoughts in recent days. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Uni Watch community played a major role in helping me get through this very stressful week. I’m a lucky fella.

I had a lengthy road trip planned for today through the middle of next week. After initially thinking I’d cancel it, I’ve decided to go ahead with it. This means you’ll be in Phil’s capable hands for the next five days, and I’ll look forward to meeting the Baltimore/DC crowd on Wednesday night, 7pm, at Hillendale Lanes. Remember, it’s BYOB, and don’t worry about actually bowling — I just like the idea of hanging out at a duckpin house, even if we don’t toss any games. Of course, if people want to bowl, that’s fine too.

Okay, that’s it. See you at the end of next week.

Arizona State has a black jersey this year. It’s pretty crappy.

    link

Also, I thought Virginia Tech was ditching the modern unis with the contrasting sleeves/pits for a more throwback look. So why is the 2008 uniform in that Nike/Eastbay ad?

    link

YES this can be right…I had one as a kid, in the mid-80s…I loved that hat…and am sadder than hell I gave it away as a kid…

Any one know where you can get one now a days?

Arizona State also has this home white uniform (doesn’t the V look like a W?):

    link

    A road gray ensemble:

    link

And it looks like there IS a gray version of Arkansas’ craptastic unis:

    link

Southern Miss’ 2009 media guide cover appears to show a 4th uni for the Golden Eagles, white with a triangular black sleeve design:

    link

Kudos to them for not having a black jersey, however.

    Oops, maybe I spoke too soon . . .

    link

“We often make a big deal about tradtiion here at Uni Watch”…and part of that tradition is pointing out our typos!! :)

So sad to hear about Jim Parker passing away this week. I can’t tell you how many times Jim and the fellas over at Helmet Hut have helped and inspired me.

    Paul,

Are you sure that the GM Hockey Team pick from your link isn’t actually a picture of the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League?
That is the same uniform they used to wear, when GM was their sponsor.

It warms the heart to see the Nebraska flag (bland though it may be) in the photo at the top of today’s entry.

I can’t find a picture of it, also not sure it has been previously mentioned here, but last night Koji Uehara started for the Orioles.

He has a customer Nike glove, like many major leaguers, but his has a silhouette of himself on the outside of the web. It’s black on black, so you can only see it when there is a close up of his glove.

Anyone know if he’s the only one with this sort of silhouette pressed into the leather?

    Also, can anyone find pics?

I have alot of issues with that Eastbay ad:

USC #55 is wearing a skill position facemask and looks as if he is the punter at best.

PSU #89 is wearing a Riddell VSR4…The lions are almost exclusively Schutt now.

Texas #20 is wearing a Schutt Air Advantage…UT is almost exclusively a Riddell team.

R.I.P. Jim Parker. I did not know him, I never heard of him before today, but I am a Helmet Hut and Helmet project addict, thus I owe him many thanks for feeding my addiction!

BTW. The Toronto catcher dipping his hand in the chalk is one of the coolest stories I have ever heard.
Bryan, did you ever find another journalism job?
Nope, but I didn’t really try very hard. Just doing some freelance stuff to plug holes in the budget for now.

I don’t think that you can see it in Bryan’s linked photos, but the Texas jerseys and caps are the vented, hole-filled variety that look like something found for $5 on a bootleg table at a flea market.

And the one-button pullovers look terrible, particularly as vests. It was wasn’t for Arkansas, Texas would easily have the title of worst uniforms in the CWS.

Seeing those AL pillbox caps reminds me of that Astros pillbox cap that I found, and won, on eBay last year. Images here: link

Only differance is that mine did not have any tags on the inside so I have no information on who made it.

Checked out the revamped NHL uniform.com , they’ve done a terrific job upgrading the site. What’s particularly strong is for each team they’ve documented very subtle changes to team uniforms. One of my favourites, as I was never aware it happened, was they note the burgundy in the Avalanche uni became several shades darker – after a few years. For us uniform geeks – that’s great stuff.

“BTW. The Toronto catcher dipping his hand in the chalk is one of the coolest stories I have ever heard.”

Oh, you young snipperwhappers, catchers have been doing that as long as I can remember. Well, not so much in the past decades, I suppose because ballpark lighting is so much better. And now they also will just wrap their fingers in white training tape.

Another trick we used to do, back in pre-history, before every conceivable accessory was available to everyone: Bright sun? Send one of the freshman (or a batboy if you had one) to scrape stuff out of tailpipes in the parking lot into a cup. Dip your finger in it and smear it under your eyes. Presto! Instant eye black.

I have always liked the looks of Arizona State, in football, baseball and basketball. I love their colors, and they almost always seem to lean toward classic design. An honest question: Doesn’t that maroon get really hot out there in the desert? I imagine early-season football games would have to be particularly brutal. Or do the athletes become acclimated to it pretty quickly?

Not speaking from experience playing for ASU, but from playing HS ball here in phoenix in black unis, you get used to it. Also early season games are usually scheduled as late as possible to avoid the direct sun. But by the time Sept rolls around and you have had two-a-days in july and august, well you just learn where the nearest trash can is to puke it out, drink some more powerade and get back out there.

I always wondered about the “Shocker” mascot/nickname for Wichita State.

    Wikipedia entry–
“The name for WSU’s athletic teams is the Shockers and, collectively, students are also referred to as being “Shockers”. The name reflects the University’s heritage: Early students earned money by shocking, or harvesting, wheat in nearby fields. Early football games were played on a stubbled wheat field. Pep club members were known as Wheaties. Tradition has it that in 1904, football manager and student R.J. Kirk came up with the nickname Wheatshockers. [1] Although the Wheatshockers name was never officially adopted by the university, it caught on and survived until it was later shortened to Shockers. Until 1948, the university used a nameless shock of wheat as its symbol. WuShock came to life when junior Wilbur Elsea won the Kappa Pi honorary society’s competition to design a mascot typifying the spirit of the school. Elsea, who had been a Marine during World War II, decided that “the school needed a mascot who gave a tough impression, with a serious, no-nonsense scowl.”

Good question regarding how many out there. I just saw them as a blight on the landscape in the late 70’s (was stimulated largely by the Bicentennial).

Here’s my really tricky question cuz, y’know, sometimes the ol’ mind gets foggy. Didn’t the Pirates wear a mustard crown pillbox for at least part of one season, prior to wearing pillboxes with the bumblebee rotators? Pretty sure they did.

Having been around at the time, I can tell you that virtually all of those are fan caps, to be sure.

I’m positive my Astros cap is a fan cap (the plastic size strap I could do without), but I have never seen anything else like it for those teams who did not wear the pillbox style back in the 70s. Seeing how there are three AL team caps in this style makes me wonder how many others are out there, and when were these made?
Good question regarding how many out there. I just saw them as a blight on the landscape in the late 70’s (was stimulated largely by the Bicentennial).

Here’s my really tricky question cuz, y’know, sometimes the ol’ mind gets foggy. Didn’t the Pirates wear a mustard crown pillbox for at least part of one season, prior to wearing pillboxes with the bumblebee rotators? Pretty sure they did.

I mentioned this a while ago, but I distinctly recall my next-door neighbor buying an A’s pillbox at Comiskey Park during the 1983 All-Star Game.

I certainly did. Bumblebees had both yellow-gold and black pillboxes. What I was checking here was for sure that they had worn pillboxes with the prevous uni set (the mustard gold ones; the first doubleknits they switched to when Three Rivers opened). And they had. Wore them in ’76 for the Bicentennial.

Point being that the Pirates actually wore three different pillboxes: Mustard (old) gold in ’76, then beginning in ’77 black and yellow-gold.

Also, if you see a yellow-gold crown that isn’t a pillbox, it’s a hat that never was. The non-pillbox gold hats were old gold (mustard), not yellow-gold.

This may have been the reason for the switch to a darker burgandy with CCM in the seasons following the switch to Starter. At least CCM recognized the need for consistency. :o)
Thanks Teebz,

From what I remember – you’re from the Winninpeg-area, so I have to ask you – is Moooose fever running rampant?

In addition, would the games that were in Hershey be televised in Winnipeg? – It kind of harkens back to a simpler era of limited television.
Moose frenzy is at an all-time high. Both Games 6 & 7 were sold out minutes after the Moose won Game 5. We already set the record for most fans at a Calder Cup Final game when we sold out both Games 1 & 2 at 15,003 fans. Now, we’re shooting for most fans in the Final history. :o)

As for the Hershey games, all of them were on TV, and both Games 6 & 7 will be covered locally on TV by Shaw Cable and by ABC-27 from Hershey for Bears’ fans.

McFarlane was saying that a ltd ed Selanne(sp?) wearing 13 is going for upwards of 15,000 because he only wore it for one preseason or something. So he said, if you happen to come across the Doan one even though it’s a larger run, you should grab it. I was thinking of hooking you up if I saw one, until he mentioned the market price on the Selanne figure.

I believe the Miami Heat did the same thing 3 years ago with a white, a red and a black jersey.

I’d like to comment, too – I have a 1921 Baltimore Orioles cap and a 1915 Baltimore Terrapins cap, both from Cooperstown Ballcap Company, and I am very pleased. The Orioles cap was initially the wrong size and had an incorrect bill, but after I sent it back to the company, the “new” cap got to me within a week.

Minor league ballpark concerts are great. I saw Counting Crows and Live at the Ripken owned Ironbirds stadium in Aberdeen Maryland a couple of years ago. I remember the old arena. From the Jets offices you could see into the open end of adjacent stadium, which meant it was a place to watch Blue Bomber games. The large empty gravel lot that sits behind Polo Park Shopping Centre (where the famed Winnipeg Polo Field and horse racing track once stood) was where the Winnipeg Arena sat. It was demolished after attempts to bring in a pro lacrosse and arena football team died.

CanWest Park, where the Goldeyes play, got rave reviews in 1999 when the PanAm Games were here. It is truly one of the greatest minor-league ballparks I have been to. Never a bad seat, and the amenities are incredible and diverse.

The gold from 71-76 was decidedly Old Gold. Very brown/green mustard; very, um, Vanderbilt-Georgia Tech gold. Looks brown or even green in some photos. Yellow-Gold doesn’t photograph like that. The Bumblebees brought the change to yellow-gold (a la Steelers, et al).

So of those two side-by-side ’76 caps, yes, they should be the same color, the color of the one on the left. A yellow-gold pillbox would be from ’77 and after. The Pirates wore Old Gold pillboxes for ’76.

VERY common to have individual branded breezers, as hockey players have endorsements. Wayne Gretzky had the most massive Hespeler logo on his breezers during his final NY Ranger days.
Lidstrom’s logo is a newcomer: Warrior. They started as a lacrosse brand, but have relatively recently expanded into hockey. They actually signed Lidstrom away from link, so Lidstrom wearing Warrior gloves is a perpetual mindf*ck for me.

Well, today has been very educational for me. Either I never saw it or it never registered for me that the logos were different for the shorts and jerseys. But OTOH, up until this year we hadn’t had hockey in Chicago for a while.

Warrior needs to do a little bit better job of letting people know about their logo IMHO. It might have good exposure for insiders, but I’d never seen it before.

    (Answering my own question)

    —Ricko
hey ricko…

didn’t you once do a collage of all the possible uni combos for the bumblebee pirates? (all black, all gold, pinstripes, and ever different iteration of mix-n-match)

im pretty sure you had them wearing both color pillboxes in that one

–or is my mind pulling a scarlet o’hara

    —Ricko
I think there was a tiny bit more gold in the non-pillbox hats, though. I went to games back then and I don’t remember them looking as mustard-y as the Cooperstown hat shows. I have a Pirates yearbook from ’72 (sorry, no working scanner right now) that has lots of color pics. In the sunlight they look more golden, but in the dugout they look more like mustard. For those who have MLB Network, check out the next time they show the ’71 Series and see how they look.

Ironic – “Stadium Mustard” hats in a ballpark that only served yellow mustard. I think even at PNC Park you can’t get Stadium Mustard. I think it’s made in Cleveland, so that could be why…

Congrats to the Pens and the City of Champions, who now have the current NFL and NHL champs- now maybe they can win the World S- well, never mind; when’s camp open?

I thought that the “real” Stanley Cup has a mapel leaf on the bottom of it to distiguish itself from the display Cup at the Hall of Fame. There’s no way the NHL screwed up and awarded the display Cup instead of the real Cup tonight, right? Somebody please tell me they changed the bottom.

The authenticated version or “Presentation Cup” was created in 1963 by Montreal silversmith Carl Petersen. It is authenticated by the seal of the Hockey Hall of Fame on the bottom of the Cup, which can be seen when winning players lift the Cup over their heads, and it is the one currently awarded to the champions of the playoffs and used for promotions.[42] This version was made in secret, and its production was only revealed three years later.[47]

Here’s an Omaha question. Why have the last two teams that have been the road team against LSU in the tournament (Rice and Virgina) both worn white in that game?

The following admission and its responses were sent to various members of the N.Y. and Philadelphia sports media including the Mets organization. It was mentioned on-air on 610 WIP radio during the mid-day show on Wednesday 6/10. Could this be true?????

I work for Hunt Construction. I was a foreman at Citi Field. There are 3 Phillies Jerseys buried in the ball park. As a lifelong Phillies fan, I felt it was my duty to jinx the Mets. I’m not telling you my real name for obvious reasons. The jerseys are:

    1. Under the Fanwalk bricks.
    2. Jackie Robinson Rotunda in the vicinity of the Ticket Office window.
    3. Near the vicinity of the ’47 Shop near right field.

I’m letting this out now since I’m going to the game tonight for the first time. I will be showing my buddies where they’re buried and will be laughing our asses off.
