I’d be the first to agree that I’m in no position to criticize anyone for having a tattoo of a brand, although I think the Brannock Device tat on my right arm is a lot cooler than Marcin Gortat’s Nike/Jordan calf tat, shown above. And as a bonus, I’ll never have to worry about a rival foot-measuring company telling me to cover up my tat, which is what Reebok has told Gortat to do. Much like the Nike/Adidas tennis spat a few years back, the tattoo situation highlights the real problem when you mix sports and sponsorships: Everyone ends up behaving like children.
You can expect to see a lot more of these conflicts as advertising encroaches on uniforms. If Player X has an endorsement deal with American Express and then his team starts wearing a MasterCard sleeve patch, how do you think that’s gonna play out? Just one more reason to keep ads off of uniforms.
And hey, speaking of ads on unis, Scoop Jackson and I debated the merits of that very topic yesterday on ESPN. Most of my arguments will be familiar to those of you who read the blog regularly, but it’s still an interesting dialogue.
And speaking of ESPN, I’ll have a new column up today — look here. — Paul
A few other items of note: Want to catch you up on a few things:
• Kirsten and I will be appearing on the radio this morning at 10:40am (not at 11:40am, which is what I had written in a previous update). We’ll be talking Candela, Uni Watch, and “I’m Calling It Shea.” You can stream the live audio here, and the segment should be archived on that page later in the day.
• As you may have noticed, we have a new sponsor in the right-hand rail: Cooperstown Collection caps from Dugout Memories. Glenn Gough, the president of Dugout Memories, is one of the nicest, most gracious people I’ve ever dealt with — please take a look at his site, and continue to support all our advertisers.
• Speaking of our sponsors, Sports Propaganda artist Chris Speakman has come up with some great new screen prints, featuring Jimmy Rollins, Chipper Jones, Ichiro, and the Cubbies. Full details here.
• Although this could change, for now I’ve decided that the Uni Watch party in Baltimore next week is still on. So we’re still good to go for next Wednesday, June 17th, 7pm, at the Hillendale Bowling Center.
• And my continued thanks to all of you who’ve said such nice things about Monday’s entry and who’ve expressed support during a very stressful period. You’re all aces.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Sharp eye by Cameron Norris, who noticed that the 1995 “World Champions” sign at Turner Field has an upside-down N. “One of those things where it really sticks out once you notice it,” he says. ”¦ Jim Mellett has provided 10 more scans from The Professionals, which I’ve added to this gallery. I’ll keep adding more images as he sends them to me. ”¦ Stirrup Nation Update: Yancy Yeater, who works for the minor league Washington Wild Things, reports that three of the team’s players have been looking my-t-fine lately. ”¦ Have you seen this year’s All-Star Game BP jerseys? I can live with the A.L. design, but check out the N.L. version — woof! Who had the bright idea of putting that powder blue trim on the collar? Gonna be one ugly home run derby this year (with thanks to Christopher Leopardi). ”¦ This is so weird, on several different levels (good find by Adam Brodsky). ”¦ I’ve previously reported that Robbie Cano’s cap hasn’t had the Yankee Stadium logo on the back, and now Erik Montgelas reports that Derek Jeter’s cap was logo-free last night as well. Sorry, no photo. ”¦ Think Salty has a long surname (14 letters)? The Bosox chose this guy (15 letters) in the MLB draft, and the Braves picked this guy (18 letters, plus the hyphen). ”¦ Check out the dotted i on Adam Everett’s road jersey. Jay Winkler says it’s been missing the top navy layer of fabric for several weeks now.
Paul once taunted me with Tinker Hatfield’s e-mail address.

Now he has a debate with Scoop Jackson, the author of my BIBLE!

Seriously, the conversations we could have would be endless!
Paul,
During one of your next trips to Wisconsin, you should throw a Uni Watch party around here. :)
My God, that NL All-Star jersey brought tears to my eyes, that’s how bad it is.
I like the All Star jerseys. Best looking ones they’ve ever had. Which isn’t saying a lot, since they are usually uglier than home-made sin. I may have to get me one of the NL ones. I wear red and powder blue together frequently. As in right now, with my UNC and StL allegiances.
Wow. I think Paul might have penned the most intelligent and well thought out discussion about uniforms that I have ever seen in his discussion with Scoop Jackson. Simply amazing how he tied everything together so well and made a very good point. Very good article and worth the read.
Paul, thanks for the insight on the uni ads… I’m certainly not a fan of Scoop Jackson, but I enjoyed that debate a lot.
.:FREE WHITLOCK:.
The trim on that NL BP Jersey gives me pause… are the Cards thinking about bringing their Powder Blues back?
Everyone keep a young man named Taylor Kinzer in your thoughts… this poor young student of ours was drafted by the Natinals yesterday. Just a shame.
Did anyone notice that Pedro Feliciano of the Mets did not have a CitiField patch on his cap last night? It\’s the first time I\’ve noticed it. Is this new or has it been that way all season?
Also, in the same game, JC Romero of the Phillies had writing under the bill of his cap. Keith Hernandez of SNY mentioned it on air.
I’ll go against what I’m sure will be the popular opinion and say I love the NL’s jerseys. I’ve always liked powder blue combined with Red and I think its a nice nod to the 70s/80s light blue road jerseys from the Cardinals. Although they weren’t the best team to wear them (Royals were the only team that made sense…), seeing those always makes me thing of Ozzie, Whitey Ball, and Willie McGee…
Looks like the Jumpman logo gained some weight. Geez.

It’s my Very Favorite Object. It’s a universal cultural touchstone (i.e., every single person reading this has had his or her foot in one of them) but almost nobody knows what it’s called. So it’s classically inconspicuous, hiding in plain sight. And it’s a great piece of design. A metaphor for the point of view I use when writing about many things, including uniforms.
I actaully don’t think the NL batting practice jerseys are that bad. The Cards had the light blue unis and the fans still like them still. I will admit it seems a little out of place on the jersey though but I think the logo is top notch.

I occassionally find myself in shoe stores. Although I know my shoe size by now and how that size differs with different brands, I always chuckle when I see the Brannock device underneath the seats.
Did anyone else notice that the two “i”s are different in the Tigers pic. The one with the missing navy dot is appliqued to be attached to the word-mark, while the one behind him is completely separate from the word-mark.

Amen brotha! Like has been said here, sometimes it’s what you remember that makes it great. LOVED the Birdos in blue, and don’t forget, Darrell Porter, Tommy Herr…
That link design is pretty spiffy, but I would have loved to the 1948 throwbacks from last year, which, like all proper Cubs jerseys, have only numbers on the backs.

Still admiring my, ahem, $12 can of link;o) Love how the banner flows out from the Kiwi logo. How about a tat of this fine tin.
I don’t think they look that bad but powder blue with red trim would be WAY better.
I know it’s cricket, but Aaron Redmond of New Zealand has one of the worst uni tape jobs in history going on right now. Due to their injury problems, he got called up from League cricket in England, and is wearing a Brendan McCullum shirt with black duct tape over the NOB and a strip across the “2” of McCullum’s “42” to try and make it look like 48.
NZ are playing Ireland in the world T20 as i write this, can’t find a picture though.
BOTH all-star game jerseys are terrible. I can’t imagine they bring in THAT much revenue.
If the WNBA is going to do the jersey ad thing, I want to see KISS sponsor a team. Surely Gene Simmons is looking into this since there is KISS on everything else, from condoms to coffins. I’d buy one of those jerseys.

Sure is, chum. The early-80s powder blues were predominantly powder-blue with Cardinal red as the accent color, placed in “normal” spots like the collar, at the ends of the sleeves, the name and number. This current monstrosity obviously follows a template of some sort, where the interplay of red and powder blue isn’t nearly as effective as a more traditional design.
If MLB had, you know, wanted to get it right, they would have abandoned this template with its cacophony of polygons and gone to simple pullover one-button tops, no side panels or armpit stains. The AL could be predominantly grey with accents of Cardinal red; the NL could be predominantly red with accents of blue.
My issue isn’t with the color, really, I liked the powder-blues…but the execution in this case sucks.
Paul, any idea when we get to see the AL/NL game jerseys?
“I’ve been wearing it 4-5 years now, and it helped me get to the NBA,” said Gortat.
Can I attribute the silliness of this quote to an understandable language communication error?
Those images from “The Professionals” bring back some great memories. I must have checked that book out of the library 10 times when I was a kid.

Um, you see them every day. The players wear their own team jerseys, but with the All-Star logo patch added.
Doesn’t the Nike tat violate the NBA players’ agreement as well? If I recall, the NBA has tried to get Stephon Marbury to cover up the “Starbury” tattoo he has on his head because players are not allowed to promote a brand on court(other than the ones that are on the unis, shoes, socks, etc.).

Maybe the biggest issue with the NL BP jerseys is the use of the powder blue, not on the side panel, but the sleeve and semi-placket piping
Has there EVER been a cap patch on the sides of an NCAA or MLB cap THAT DID NOT SUCK?
I believe that cap patches take away from the simplicity and traditions of a baseball cap. Nike swooshes/other manufacturers included.
The team ID is all that is needed. I know that I am watching the World Series when I am watching it. I know which stadium I am in when I am there. There are shirt/jersey sleeves and entire stadiums with surfaces to put whatever crap there is to honor/advertize/sell.
Leave the caps alone – STARTING NOW !!!
When a MLB player cures cancer for all time in uniform, or throws a ball to the moon, then you can create a patch for that achievement and use it to deface a MLB cap. Same for NCAA and even bantam leagues.
That’s my opinion.
I’d buy the NL all star jersey because I actually do like the powder blue siding. It’s ingenious, and honestly, the AL jersey sucks major(word omitted). I like the color jersey better than the black stuff, especially since people notice it better.
What kind of font will be on the back of those All Star jerseys? Basic block, like the Cardinals use?

Scoop Jackson is a clown. Straight up.
Good for Marcin Gortat by refusing to cover his tattoo. Reebok should have done its due diligence by, at the very least, YouTube-ing him and spotting the Jordan logo (heaven forbid actually watch him play). If they would have noticed (read: had one eye open among all their employees) the Jordan tat, they could have given him a conditional contract contingent upon covering Jordan, or they could have passed on him. But the contract is signed, and it must stand as it is unless both sides agree to modify it. Shame on Reebok, you lose, now deal with it. (Plus, I’m not-so-secretly laughing. You CAN’T be the brightest bulbs after this total airball.)

MLBmajestic learn that those side panels are freakin horrid
Well done, and I agree on all counts. What is the percentage of people who like those side panels? Five percent? Ten?
Some day, the powers-that-be will realize just how bad the side panels look. After all, it took a while, but the Expos/Mets/others superthick stripes down the sleeves/jerseys/pants finally disappeared.
Although I don’t think stirrups are required…

It’s a dumb look, but somewhere there’s some level of demand.
I personally don’t get it: I’d rather go with a better looking t-shirt or sweatshirt of my teams than an “authentic” jersey that I’d feel silly wearing. Luckily most of my teams are pretty good about their look.

Ricko, I agree that it should be navy: and I’ll defer to your judgement on exactly what color it actually is. :-)
The powder blue on the All-Star jerseys is an obvious homage to the Cardinals roadies from the late ’70s. I have a Mitchell & Ness of Lou Brock in that flavor and it’s my favorite. Probably ’cause they were wearing them when I saw the game.
Does it need to go? Ehh, maybe. But the side panels, yessir! LI Phil, make this your mission in life.
My two cents, if they are not needed in game jerseys, why on BP jerseys? ‘Cause they need the stretchiness or whatever? Uh, no.

My 2c on the Brannock device.
The original patent is here, filed in 1927:
link
What I like about it is that they got it perfect the very first time. The Brannock device you’d see in a store today is the same one you’d see from 1927. Same materials, same design, same functionality.
How many other devices have survived unchanged for 80+ years? No enhancements, no batteries, no need to make it digital or add racing stripes or speed holes.
Its a paragon of perfect design.

That’s not the fault of the machine, that’s all on the shoe manufacturers. My feet will fit into anywhere from an 11 to a 12.5 (usually a 12), depending on the manufacturer. If anything in the NFL gets mistaken for Auburn, it’s a Bears jersey. I get that all the time when I wear my #48 Stephen Davis Auburn jersey – “Is that a Bears jersey? Are you a Bears fan?” It’s pretty obvious that it’s not a Bears jersey, but it happens more than you’d think.

(P.S. If the Dolphins ever did switch to navy jerseys without changing much else, they’d be WAY to mindful of Auburn. Nothing wrong with Auburn, just that the Dolphins ought to look like the Dolphins)
Why would the Dolphins switch to navy unis?
If anything in the NFL gets mistaken for Auburn, it’s a Bears jersey. I get that all the time when I wear my #48 Stephen Davis Auburn jersey – “Is that a Bears jersey? Are you a Bears fan?” It’s pretty obvious that it’s not a Bears jersey, but it happens more than you’d think.
There seems to be a never ending rumor that something’s up with the Dolphins unis, probably sooner than later. Nothing changes, but the rumor hangs around. My reference to Auburn was, of course, to the entire look (white helmets and pants and all). But Imagine you knew that.
—Ricko
No. I got what you said Ricko. I pictured Ron Brown (sounds a lot tougher). The helmet stripes do match. I was just expressing my thoughts on a possible navy color invasion.
The white/navy/white would be similar, but there’s still some differences. Ron may sound tougher, but it will always be “Ronnie.”

I just read the Paul vs. Scoop discussion about uni-advertising. It was interesting to read a dissenting opinion than what is commonly written about here by Paul and everyone in the comments. I am completely against ads on uniforms for all the reasons Paul mentioned. The discussion highlighted the difference between the cash-strapped WNBA doing it versus the extremely profitable NFL, for example. I would see ad patches on NFL uniforms as a greedy cash-grab.
What if your favorite NFL (or MLB) team came out and said, “to make the games accessible to more fans and more affordable in this tough economy, we’re putting a small ad patch on the jerseys, but we’re cutting all ticket and concession prices by 10%”? Would that change anyone’s opinion?

Loved the column/video, Paul; though I was distracted by what looked like a faux 49ers numberless jersey on you…
Reminded me of when they tore down the Richfield Coliseum. My brother and I were vendors there for years. We knew someone who was clearing out the place before the demolition crew arrived, and he let us in to take whatever we could fit in our vehicles. We got seats, a piece of hardwood from the practice court, a partial scale model of the new arena, some Coliseum patches, a parking attendant’s coat (that was my winter coat for a few years before it got worn out) and the banner that draped in front of the scorers’ table during the Miracle of Richfield years.
Whatever we didn’t get was buried on site. I shudder to think what’s still down there.
By the way, the site is sort of a bird sanctuary now. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park owns the land. They were going to let trees grow there, but when birds migrating from Canada started resting there, they decided to keep trimming the field. You can even walk around there, as long as you avoid the spot where the building was (the ground has settled there and they don’t want anyone falling in). It’s quite a hike from the road (especially since I did it in the snow so I wouldn’t have to worry about poison ivy) but it was a neat experience.

I’d say keep cutting. If it were a more significant cut I’d begrudgingly welcome it. We had a similar discussion about the ads leading to a cut in the amount of commercials. A possible compromise, but would the leagues and networks agree? I’m starting to think the possibility of that happening is the same as Congress saying, “We’re going to wear a sponsor patch on our suits, but we’re cutting your taxes.”

The AFC South works because it consists of four teams that didn’t exist until the 1980s. Indy and Tennessee are relocates, Jacksonville and Houston are expansions, they deserve each other in a way. I suppose you could make the argument that Baltimore should be in the East with the Jets, Bills, and Pats, move the Colts to the North with Cincy, Cleveland and Pittsburgh and move Miami to the South.

The way I heard it, all the cities in the NFL Century Division where stops on the route famous Century Limited passenger train that ran out of NY City. And, of course it gave them the Coastal, Capital, Central.
Ah yes, Nike shoes. One of my absolute favorite of all aesthetic choices. Call me a sell out, but I love the swoosh. I’ve always loved how their sizes differentiate so much though. I wear a size 15 in most Nikes, but a size 14 in the running shoes (Motos, Pegasuses, Vomeros, etc.), and a 13 in the classics (AF1’s, Vandals, Blazers, etc.)
* On the topic of shoes, anyone actually ever get some personalized? That’s always an interesting discussion.
* And about RJ51… I thought I once read that he wore a size 13 (still trying to find an internet source). The only reason I remember that, is because I thought it weird that he would wear a smaller size than a little guy like myself.

I was wondering how the Century and Coastal references we’re seeing today got started! I guess some lamebrain said “NFC Central”.
You know, I don’t know of anyone around here who calls it the NFC North.
I should have said, “all or most”. Original Century Division was New York, PIttsburgh, Cleveland and St. Louis. Division make up changed, as did the stops for the train, I’ll wager.
For what it’s worth, the 20th Century Limited is the train Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint take west in NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

The Colts and Oilers were around long before the 60’s despite relocation and/or name changes. The problem is this: the Jets, Dolphins, Pats and Bills have a blood oath to stick together. The Chiefs, Raiders, Chargers and Broncos have a blood oath to stick together. The Browns and Steelers have a blood oath to stick together. Same for the Browns and Bengals. Cleveland also has this with the Ravens (for obvious reasons). What does that leave you with? 4 teams, 2 who changed cities, and 2 expansion teams, who got stuck together as the AFC Leftover Division.
What is freakin’ “south” about Indianapolis? What is “east” about Miami, or “north” about Baltimore?
The divisions were about keeping rivalries; 3 divisions have them, and 1 division has none.
If you wanted a true geographical alignment, it would look like this:
South (Jax, Mia, Ten, Hou)
North (Cin, Cle, Ind, Pit)
East (NE, Buf, Bal, NYJ)
West (SD, Oak, Den, KC)

Personally, I think that’s giving Rozelle just a little too much credit, but maybe they did go that deep when they were looking for the name.
Rozelle was a former journalist and PR guy (for the Rams). I can imagine he or someone on his staff seizing on “Century” because of the train…and to get a fourth “C”. It was one of the first “named” trains (ala the Orient Express) in the U.S. and extremely famous in the 40 or so years prior to 1967.

Just watched the Page 2 video. Like a previous poster, I never imagined Paul with a somewhat deep voice. haha. Interesting video. Other than the flag, I didn’t see anything that I would want to buy. It’s just weird that Jax and Miami are 2 teams in the same state, and in the same conference, but not in the same division, and therefore have no real history or rivalry. Cleveland and Cincinnati, the Jets and Bills, the Raiders and Chargers.
Sure, there are other teams that share a state, but when it’s an NFC and AFC team, the rivalry isn’t necessarily there on an annual basis (Phi/Pit) (Bal/Was) (StL/KC) (Hou/Dal) (Jax/TB) (Mia/TB) (SD/SF) (Oak/SF) (NYJ/NYG).
The Jags and Dolphins have played one meaningful game, ever, and most people probably don’t remember it. The Jags crushed Dan Marino in his final game, 2000 divisional round, 62-7. That’s it, one game.

What new Shea stadium?
I may have missed it, but I didn’t notice any comment on the Atlanta Braves’ Barbaro Canizares making his big league debut today, and coming to the plate without the “A” sticker on his batting helmet during his first at-bat. The “A” appeared for his second AB, though.

Couldn’t find a pic of him without the “A”, but this video shows his first hit (in 3rd at-bat) and Braves’ color commentator Joe Simpson remarking, “He just needed an ‘A'”.

God I hope they NEVER do that. Navy Blue is becoming like black. In fact, we (the Dolphins) need to get rid of that navy blue from the color palette and go with our original colors. The circa 1991/1992 uniform is the perfect example.
What’s the issue with screen printing anyway?
EXACTLY !
By the way, Didn’t the Dolphins originally wear a more “green” shade of aqua?
Or is it just my series of bad TV sets and/or NBC’s poor color that made it look more and more like the Oilers’ color blue?

AGREED
I think Old Gold and Yellow/gold are both underused where they often should be used as jersey colors.
Probably NOT for the Chiefs, as that would look like Iowa State at a weak moment of judgment.
But I certainly could see a Steelers alternate. Particularly where you could avoid wearing Black jerseys in 99 degrees at noon in Florida. Perhaps it would look better with White pants, rather that all Yellow/Gold.
Give it to Mr. Rooney, he wasn’t looking to sell yet another jersey, he was considering Yellow/Gold alternates as a way to help his players – the best of any possib;le intentions.
by the way, the University of Tenn.-Chattanooga has the best Old Gold jersey going right now. Dark Old Gold, the way ALL of them should be.
Vegas Gold is simply one of the signs of the Sports/manufacterer-dictating-colors-and- tradition-alterations/Nike-style Apocalypse
Cal and WVA both look great.
I hate to knock a new sponsor, but I wish to express my distress at a seller of “Cooperstown Collection” baseball caps.
Many are pure fabrications. Most reflect laziness. As an example, the New York Giants had the same cap insignia from the early twentieth century until 1949, when they adopted the formulation that the Mets eventually distorted.
The mistakes of American Needle are equalled by those of your friends at Mitchell and Ness. Numerous photographs of old uniforms and caps are readily available, and I feel that these manufacturers ought put in some effort to evaluate them more accurately.
just looked at the professionals album, fell in love with this jersey:

Yes, they were around way before the 80s, but neither franchise does much of anything to acknowledge their former city. In the RCA Dome, only Indianapolis players and achievements were displayed, nothing about the Baltimore days. I believe the same applies for Tennessee. So they might as well be expansion teams.
Of course the NFC East has Dallas, when Carolina should probably be in the East and Dallas in the South (or the West with St. Louis moving to the South). Yeah it’s about rivalries, but if they got the geography right back then, the rivalries wouldn’t have turned out the way they did.
