Back on April 27th, I ran a Ticker item about this page from a 1958 MacGregor catalog. “Dig item G914,” I wrote. “Who’s Ted Sowle?” A reader helped fill in some of the blanks with this comment, but that didn’t address the question of the headgear shown in the old catalog. Had Sowle designed it, or had it been named after him for some other reason?
I got an answer a few days later, when I received an e-mail from one Ted Sowle. But no, not that Ted Sowle. Here’s what the note said:
Ted Sowle was my grandfather. He passed away in 1971, just before I was born. I was researching his past when I came across your question about him. ”¦ He holds many patents regarding the safety of, primarily, football athletes. A very creative guy and a hell of a football coach (was asked to coach for Notre Dame but turned it down, or so I’m told).
Ted offered to send me some of his grandfather’s patents — an offer I readily accepted. And sure enough, he designed the eyewear protector shown in the old catalog page (you can see the rest of that patent’s paperwork here). That design was apparently a refinement of a similar contraption he’d patented nine years earlier (full paperwork here).
Ted sent me nine patents in all, and they fell into three broad categories. The two designs I just showed you related to eyewear protection. There were also two harnesses, patented less than a year apart, that were designed to provide hip and body protection for football players, although the gear kinda looks more like S&M fetishwear (full paperwork here and here).
The other five patents were all faceguard-related, and that’s where things got interesting. Remember these photos from the Life archive? That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw this (paperwork), this (paperwork), and this (paperwork). But the Life photo sequence is from 1951, while Sowle’s patents are from several years later (and, as I eventually discovered when I read the fine print, are not based on a plexiglass concept).
Sowle’s other two facemask patents, which he received in the 1960s, featured pivoting action — one for a single pivot-mounted bar (paperwork) and the other for a slightly more elaborate assembly (paperwork).
Looks like ol’ Ted was quite the inventer. Had he been a trained engineer or designer, or did he just link to tinker? “Not an engineer — just a coach who cared, I guess,” said the younger Ted.
Amazing stuff, right? Very DIY, when you think about it. Meanwhile, I had lots of additional questions: Did Sowle patent other inventions? Did any of his designs gain widespread acceptance? Were there any designs that he felt were unjustly ignored or underrated? Did he design any non-sports items?
At this point Ted referred me to his father (the elder Ted’s son), who he said would be better equipped to answer these queries. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard back from him yet, but I’ll post some follow-up material if and when he responds. This jersey was probably the one that the Red Bulls wear during pre-game warmups (when the Red Bulls don’t wear their all-white uniforms, they wear all-navy blue).
Unfortunately, Hochevar got rocked. Betcha he’s wearing long pants next time out.

Like other readers, I created leagues, teams and uniforms when I was a kid. After reading last Thursday’s contribution from David Versel (especially his light green road uniforms), it made me think of one of my leagues. Unfortunately, I do not have any original drawings from the North American Baseball League from the mid 1970s. I have redrawn some of the logo and jersey designs from memory.
TORONTO COUGARS — This was the team with the light green road uniforms. Actually, the team colors were light and dark green. The road ones were closer to a green-grey flannel color than a pastel polyester one. The cap logo had only the sides of a “T” — neither top nor bottom.

INDIANAPOLIS DEVILS — Looking at a cap logo, there’s not much you can do with a capital I. So I took a lower case “i” and italicized it to add motion. Then, since the dot above looked like it was also in motion, I made it into a baseball and added flames for the cap. Then I came up with a nickname to go with the fire. The logo definitely came first.

NEW ORLEANS DELTA — This was one of the nickname finalists for the NBA team (they chose Jazz). Of course, I had NO IDEA what the team concept or mascot could be. Just like the “I” above, there’s not much you can do with an “O.” I mean, it’s just a circle and even if you italicize it, it just looks like an oval. So I interlocked the “N” to look like baseball stitching inside the “O.”
Originally, Seattle was green and gold and New Orleans was purple and gold. I decided to switch the colors (since they were originally chosen because of their NBA teams). The uniforms were very similar to the A’s uniforms, but the color was less yellow and more of a darker gold. On white, the logo had a gold shadow. On the gold jerseys there was no shadow.

WASHINGTON AMBASSADORS — This was the name of a WFL team that relocated to Orlando before the first season. I scooped up the nickname for my team and put the “W” and “A” together with a star in red, white and royal blue (I think the Birmingham Americans of the WFL influenced the design). The logo was used in the home and road jersey script.

After one season, they relocated to Tennessee. Why? Two reasons. First, Washington couldn’t support two real baseball teams. How could they support a fake one? And secondly, teams are supposed to relocate in the first few years of a rival league’s existence (like in the AFL, ABA, WHA, etc.)
Team colors were powder blue and red (like the Houston Oilers) but they did not wear powder blue pants (even at that age I couldn’t do that). The logo was still incorporated in both jersey scripts.

HAWAII VOLCANOES — A few decades after the St Louis Browns and a decade before the Padres, there was another team wearing brown and orange. The volcano was brown and the orange lava was shooting out (in hindsight, like the apocalypse) in the shape of a “V.” The cool thing was, the negative space created a white “H” — about five or six years before the Hartford Whalers did it.

It’s not just new uniforms for South Alabama; it’s a brand new football program. The link could use a little more color, though.
I lean toward Rangers in the Old Firm Celtic-Rangers feud (I’m Protestant after all), but damn, those Celtic tartan shorts are the bomb-diggity.

The overall design is the same, but it is not identical. The flag, placement of stars, fading of colors are all slightly different, but made to mimic the original mask.
A few days ago it was in the ticker that Lakeland Flying Tigers player Kyle Peters was wearing a recycled jersey. He’s not the only one. I noticed last night that their pitcher Brett Jacobson also had a previous name on the back of his jersey- his own last name. I can understand why they would recycle a leftover jersey by changing the name on the back but why would you have your name be completely restitched? Unfortunately, I don’t carry a camera for this one.

I loved the photos of the first game at jarry park. I have fond memories of traveling 100 miles north and seeing big league baseball. The p.a. announcements in both french and english, and the enthusiasm in which the likes of Coco Laboy, John Boccabella, and le grande orange, Rusty Staub were announced as they ame to the plate. I sometimes wonder if the Expos had expanded Jarry park, rather than moving to olympic stadium, if there would still be big leagie baseball in Montreal. I only went to “the big O” for baseball once, and it had the feel of a parking deck.
I had the great misfortune of watching a Blue Jays highlight on SportsCenter this morning. Man, what a terrible uni. BFBS, teal-ish blue, awful wordmark, embarrassing number and nameplate font. Just a mess. The maple leaf, while a nice touch on its own, only shines a spotlight on how terrible the rest of the uniform really is. Yuck.

Park is so small. By todays’ standards seems amazing to realize that’s the home park of a major league team. Granted, it was never to be anything more than temporary….but the setting in those photos sure does look different.
A little like Met Stadium, I suppose. When it first hosted MLB in ’61, from the second deck or higher you could see cows grazing in a farmer’s field 400 or so hundred yards beyond the left field stands. Now, of course, a couple times a week I eat lunch at Mall of America, which sits on the Met Stadium site, and light rail transit runs through what was that farmer’s field.
Everything changes over time. In my case, that was pretty much a whole lifetime ago.

If anyone has access to the television feed from FS Wisconsin last night, Bob Uecker made an appearance in the TV booth with the normal announcers Brian and Bill. If you have time, I highly recommend listening to the bottom of the 4th inning of this game. Nothing special on uniform chatter, but Uecker was at his finest. He talks about Major League 4, and how he hates the Little League World Series because of the pressure the coaches and parents put on the kids. He, of course, also talks about how he stunk it up playing pro baseball. The reason he was in the TV booth, is he was talking about being indicted onto the Milwaukee Braves Wall of Honor that same day.

I was thinking the same thing watching SC. I was mentally trying to visualize ways it could be salvaged by subbing royal blue for the black, but the colors are a disaster. The logo looks like it belongs in the minor league. The number font just doesn’t work, even if you go NNOB.
That said, I’d take Roy Halladay in any uniform.
Loved the pictures from Parc Jarry, but two of the captions were wrong, saying Bob Gibson when they actually pictured Curt Flood. Also, Stan Musial appeared uncredited in two photos, one with Bowie Kuhn and one other.
I actually have one of the mistaken identity baseball cards, the “Dick Ellsworth.” Part of my childhood collection. I always knew it wasn’t Ellsworth, since he was a lefty, but never knew it was actually Ken Hubbs.

As do I, although for awhile I had lost much of that.
Relearning the nuances of the game thoughout my certification courses and getting back onto the field have really rejuvenated that affection.
I have to admit that UW has had a great affect as well. Between the usual uni-talk, the excitement stiirred up on this site concerning baseball has really brought me back to watching and listening to parts of every Mets, Yankees and nationally broadcasting game that I can get.
I consider Paul’s article on Shea to be the #1 inspiration for that.
Over the years, I couldn’t have cared less for the Mets, except of course for the great color and uni combos.
I had forgotten that there were TWO MLB teams near me.
Reading and participatin in discussions here has not only persuaded me to listen to the excellent Howie Rose call the games on WFAN, but last week I actually attended a game and yesterday even picked up a Mets tee.

I’m getting married in August and I’ve already threatened my fiancee that I’m going to wear vertically striped socks under my schmuxedo to honor the team I was in love with 25 years before I met her. Please help me follow up on this.
I loathe the one color football unis that look like a shrink-wrapped jumpsuit. However, regardless of the sport, New Zealand players and the All Black tradition is just awesome. The helmets, just featuring the silver fern, are gorgeous.

Out of all of those uniforms the NZ team easily has the best. The rest make me want to vomit, but, and maybe it is the rugby player in me, I think NZ does it right.

Park is so small. By todays’ standards seems amazing to realize that’s the home park of a major league team. Granted, it was never to be anything more than temporary….but the setting in those photos sure does look different.

Yeah it’s funny you make the comparison with the Met, I grew up in Montreal, and the first time I saw the Met on TV, I was thinking there was a stadium almost as bad as Jarry Park.
I think the only chance – and it was a slim one -of the franchising ever having made it in Montreal – was the downtown – scenic, atmospheric 35,000 stadium.
I now live in Toronto – and fully concur that the Blue Jays uniform is terrible – in watching some of the telecasts this year, I’m noticing some branding that appears to be harking back to their earlier days. With Paul Beaston back – at least temporarily – I would not be at all surprised if they go back to a look similar to their glory days. It would be welcomed with open arms.
There was a NY Met game on locally – which is rare on Monday – NY was wearing a solid white look (i.e. no pinstripes)- is that their primary look – or do they mix and match so often they don’t really have a primary look

I came across that Socks Rock link last week and linked it in the comments here. Outstanding products, but one complaint….minimum order of 12 on the really good stuff? Cut those Red Sox style socks and stirrups down to six and I’d snatch them up in a heartbeat. I go through a lot of adidas socks between rugby, soccer, and softball, but I wouldn’t go through a dozen of them. I love the products, but that’s a steep price to have to pay. And while I could split it with teammates, my softball teammates don’t do socks or stirrups.

Agree completely. I expect to see an update of their classic 1989-1996 uniforms before too long.
Although I also get the impression that they sell a LOT of hats with the new “J” design. It seems like every second gangster wannabe walking around the suburbs is wearing either the official hat or some goofy New Era version.

As I watched the colossal embarrassment that was the Braves 10th inning collapse (due to an earlier blown call at 3rd), all the announcers could say about Cora was that he’d only played first one other time professionally. That’s why he didn’t have a 1bman’s glove.
Also, in the Frank Thomas baseball card (link) linked in the ticker, check the opponent’s uniform. It’s one of those Tequila Sunrise spinoffs. Thomas played at Auburn, I can’t think of who the other team may be in the SEC.

And I didn’t see Bobby Hull at the Night of Legends you mentioned, but I did see him signing autographs at the UC before last Thursday’s game. We were going up the escalator. He was sitting at a table with his back to us and there was a big crowd of people around him. We could only see him from the back at first and my friend recognized him based on the hairpiece.
Sure enough, when we got to the second floor, we looked down and saw his face for the positive ID.

HA! You read me wrong friend. I’ve grown up in Chicago. I well remember the “God made the Irish #1” bumper stickers during the 1970’s. Interviewing out of college, the people conducting the interviews rarely felt it necessary to mention where THEY went to college: one person mentioned Annapolis (and his Navy career), and two mentioned that they went to Dome. That’s it. Later I found that people I had talked to had MBA’s out of Chicago and NU, but they didn’t bring that up within 15 minutes of meeting me.
I’ve seen the “ND is the next best thing to heaven” attitude for quite a while. It’s not my favorite thing in the world by a long shot.
I always laugh when the Domers think that they’re being unfairly persecuted in the polls (see the Boston College loss).
In short, IMHO the ND BS extends ad infintum in the minds of Domers and Domer wannabes.

Reminds me of a story my HS basketball coach told about a bench-warming teammate of his in college who tried to win a few bucks on a bet by wearing only a jock under his warm-up pants during a game. Turned out the game was a blow-out win and the coach told him to sub in.

Maybe I’m wrong, but judging by the pictures it looks like the mask with MSG on the side is the more recent one (meaning MSG was added to the mask, not subtracted). While that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, look at the jerseys: The one on the left is the Edge design, while the other is pre-Edge. Maybe it’s not even MSG? Who knows – it might just be a base for the graphic pictured on the side or something.
Anyway, I think he was wearing an entirely new mask during the season (with a bronze colored cage), so we might never see the mask in the photo again.

Juan Pierre does routinely wear stirrups. He wears his field cap under his batting helmet because he has an epically small noggin, so it helps the helmet fit better. I’m unable to think of any other cap-under-helmet-wearing batters.

Jim Jackman is the Associate Producer of “Degrassi: The Next Generation” for which Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes appeared in a few episodes.
Jon Gordon is a producer of “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”, “Dogma” and “Jersey Girl”… and many other films.
On DiPietro’s mask: Those are 2 different masks in the photo. The vent holes in one are round and the other’s are triangular.
About the fans dressed as umpires during tonight’s Blue Jays game, one of them actually put on a mask, further completing the umpire look.
I wonder if these guys will be featured in a news story eventually…
