Last Wednesday I spent the day out on Long Island, where my father has been recovering from a three-week hospital stay (he’s almost back to normal, thanks). This is what’s known as Very, Very Bad, because I wasn’t home when the FedEx guy showed up. You may have gotten a hint of this, even though you know nothing about my father or my FedEx shipments, at 4:13pm, when Robert Marshall posted the following message in that day’s comments: “aaargh!! paul, you were not home to accept the package?! that tears it, i’m getting drunk.”
Marshall, as you may recall, is the OCD-DIY (his description) genius (my description) who created that amazing Big Ten bowling set, among many other sensational projects. I was pretty sure I knew what was in the package he had sent me, because he’d been hinting about it for months, and I was plenty eager to see it. But I figured one more day of waiting wouldn’t hurt.
Next day: It’s late afternoon and I’m about to go out for a social obligation that will take several hours. Dammit, where’s that FedEx guy? Just as I’m about to give up and head out, the doorbell rings. I dash downstairs, grab the package, run back upstairs, toss the package on my sofa, and head off for what turns out to be an excruciatingly bad evening. By the time I get home, it’s about 11pm and I’m exhausted. Also crabby. I figure I’ll just feed the cats and crash.
But wait, what’s that on the sofa? I’d forgotten all about Robert’s package. It’s tagged with a fun illustration, which provides a further hint as to its contents. I open the outer wrapping and find a box. I open that and am greeted with some fabric. This turns out to be some sort of tunic, with a uni number on one side and a boozing bird on the other. The bird seems like an obvious reference to Drinky Crow, the lead character in Tony Millionaire’s long-running comic strip “Maakies.” Hmmm, I think, is Robert a fellow “Maakies” enthusiast? Is he aware that I have an original signed/framed “Maakies” strip hanging in my dining room? I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this to him, so maybe the bird on the tunic is just a coincidence. Still, it’s a pretty big coincidence. Which makes me think of that Seinfeld bit where the annoying (but kinda hot [but mostly annoying]) Russian chick says, “That’s what a coincidence is! There are no small coincidences or big coincidences. There are only coincidences.”
This is the part where I say, “But I digress.”
Squirreled away inside the tunic are three bubble-wrapped treasures. By now you should have figured out what they are, but I suppose a few of you might have bet on Mine That Bird at 50-1 and spent the rest of the weekend partying so hard that your logic circuits aren’t firing at peak efficiency today, so here’s a hint:
Rhymes with “bobbleheads.”
And not just any bobbleheads, mind you. We’re talking Uni Watch bobbleheads, handmade by Marshall himself. He’d first proposed this project to me a few months ago, and he’d been giving me small, tantalizing updates on his progress along the way. I was pretty damn excited to liberate them from that bubble-wrap.
The photo at the top of this entry gives you an idea of what the bobbles look like, but that’s all I’m gonna show you for now. Because to fully appreciate the bobbles, you need to know how they were made. So I’m now going to surrender the floor to Marshall. Open this page in a new window, read it all the way through, and then meet me back here. Don’t cheat by skipping ahead on this page!
Hello again. Pretty great stuff, am I right? I am very, very humbled by the thought that Uni Watch helped inspire these amazing creations.Incredible as it may sound, however, Marshall actually short-changed his own work in that essay of his, because he didn’t go into most of the little details that make these bobbles so wonderful. Por ejemplo:• I love the little logo labels on the baseball player’s glove.
• Also love the raised button on the baseball player’s cap.
• Check out the little notations Robert painted onto the base of each figurine (and dig that red inlining on the gold lettering — can’t even imagine how painstaking that must have been to execute).
• Robert mentioned this in his step-by-step rundown, but it bears repeating: It’s so cool that the hockey player is all cherubic and fresh-faced yet he’s also dropped one glove already. Don’t fuck with him!
• Best detail of all: Marshall took this T-shirt logo and used it as the basis of the football player’s helmet logo+number.
• And of course I appreciate that Marshall used Uni Watch colors, that he used the uni number I use on my Uni Watch membership card, and that he went old-school NNOB for all three figurines.
I didn’t know anything about those particular details until I received the package. I did have a little advance notice of what was in the works, however, because at one point Marshall asked me to choose my favorite uni options from this roster of choices. He also teased me with the occasional progress-update photo.
Incidentally, Marshall ain’t no bobblehead rookie. Here, I’ll let him explain:
When i was in school at Ohio State I did whatever I could to make money, just like any college student. Having just hand-sculpted a “History of the Big Ten” set of bobbles (it had all the trophies, a beat-up U. of Chicago bobble on a stretcher, all as part of a singularly pedestaled piece, it was fantastic), it occurred to me that I could do something similar to sell at football games. So I did that. I made a set of generic scarlet and gray bobbles (I was being careful), put them on a tray, walked around the stadium with them in full bobbling glory, and sold them before the games. They went over swimmingly. “Oh Fred, we need one of those for the camper” was heard often.
I can’t recall which game it was when i finally got snuffed out. But suffice it to say, that some gassed-up sorority gal suggested in a very obnoxious fashion that I would make a lot more money, including money from a purchase she would make herself (yeah right), if I made her favorite player. I decided not to take her advice and more or less told her to go plant some flowers. Two seconds later I was in the clutches of the coppers, who promptly grabbed my individually handmade sculptures and threw them in a trash bag.
I would have been fine, except I was a couple feet too close to the stadium, on university property (I hadn’t violated any school trademarks). I was later offered my bobbles back but they were all broken, so I didn’t bother. Ass-clowns. That “Please donate money” mail I get every year right after the bowl season goes right in the trash, just to say thanks.
With your help, I’d like to get Robert back into the bobblehead biz — in part so he can make some $$$ (or at least recoup his costs from this project), and in part so other people can enjoy his amazing art. We haven’t worked out all the details yet, but the idea is that you’ll be able to order a custom-painted bobble, sort of like you can order a custom-designed Uni Watch membership card.
These plans, of course, are based on the assumption that there will be some demand for the bobbles. I’m fairly certain there will be (did we mention that the heads move?), but hey, I’ve been wrong about that kind of thing in the past. So if you think you might be in the market for this type of product, speak up in today’s comments.
Oh, and about the tunic: “It’s my my alt alt, or altar boy alternate, from the softball team,” says Robert. “I think I told you I had made one but didn’t have photos. I don’t need it anymore, so I thought it would make good packing material and maybe give you a laugh to boot.” And the bird had nothing to do with “Maakies.”
And as if you didn’t already have enough to read today, here’s a really long Ticker: Lots more NFL rookie numbers, this time for the Titans, Cowboys, Colts, Steelers (the guys at the top of the list), and Pats (but what’s with the two different guys wearing No. 91?). ”¦ Mike Green’s right glove looks a bit threadbare, no? (As spotted by Kevin Maresca.) ”¦ Here’s a Rawlings logo I’d never seen before. Comes from this item. ”¦ Friday’s DIY goalie mask entry reminded Matthew Fedorka of a guy in his town who made Dwayne Roloson’s masks. “He has a site where he talks about the inspirations for Roli’s masks and also has a ‘mask museum’ where he showcases all the DIY masks he has made over the years,” says Matthew. ”¦ Friday’s Chicago Tribune had a feature that listed the best White Sox and Cubs by uni number. Lots of great old photos (with thanks to Larry Kurtze). ”¦ Great find by Scott M.X. Turner, who writes: “If you love baseball, baseball card graphics and typefaces, smart humor, and ‘Casey at the Bat,’ this is the mother lode.” ”¦ When you get right down to it, nothing defines the words “under armour” more than an athletic cup. Which is why this story is so funny. ”¦ Check out Cal State Stanislaus, looking all fancy in their Bosox-style stirrups (big thanks to John Moist). ”¦ Gorgeous old Colts/Packers photo here (great find by Zac Neubauer). ”¦ Mike Pelfrey’s Mets logo left-sleeve patch has been missing from his road jersey all season (with thanks to Terence Kearns). ”¦ Here’s what Pirates prospects wear at the team’s new academy in the Dominican. Why do teams keep insisting on this bi-level chest logo/number treatment? Looks like shite (with thanks to Doug Keklak). ”¦ Bronson Arroyo’s been wearing a double-flapped helmet for years now, but this one looks particularly huge (with thanks to Chris Hilf). ”¦ “Was looking at some photos of the Rams minicamp this season,” writes Ricky Foley, “and it appears that the Spagnuolo administration has switched the quarterback ‘no contact’ jersey back to red. Under Linehan, they wore gold. Under Martz, QBs wore red, and Marshall Faulk and Steven Jackson wore gold.” ”¦ Kyle Pineda says this photo, apparently showing an early-’90s Tigers/Jays game, is the source of much confusion on a Tigers discussion board. What’s with the orange jersey? Could the Tigers have played a game in this BP jersey? ”¦ Japanese baseball news from Jeremy Brahm: The Hanshin Tigers are wearing 1985 throwbacks for their interleague games; the Yokohama Bay Stars wore this patch on their pantson April 7th (“part of their pink ribbon campaign that goes with their dance team, yes baseball dance team, for breast cancer awareness”); on Mother’s Day, the Tigers and Bay Stars will wear pink wristbands; and here’s Hello Kitty dressed up in some baseball uniforms, just because. ”¦ “I found these jersey pictures in one of my Flickr groups,” says Jennifer Muller. Turns out the guy is called Flagman — he has a web site, but it has really annoying sound, plus it’s a Geocities site, so mute your keyboard and be prepared for an error message. ”¦ Major eBay find here by Scott M.X. Turner. Untucked, drop-down school name on the front, drop-down team name on the back, “Crusaders” — it’s all so great, I don’t even mind the purple. ”¦ The Rays debuted their boring new navy alts on Friday. I was hoping the Bosox would stick to their stated “We wear our own boring navy alts on Friday road games” so we could have navy vs. navy, but they Sox pussied out and went with their road grays instead. This also means we still don’t know whether the Sox plan to wear red socks/sleeves with the navy alts or if they’ll still with the blue socks/sleeves. ”¦ The great thing about college football is how it inspires such intelligent, rational debate to me. ”¦ Eyewear observation from Tris Wykes, who writes: “I’ve noticed lately that when high school softball players wear sunglasses in the field, they’re going with trendy styles that make them resemble Paris Hilton. That player is from King’s Fork in Suffolk, Virginia.” ”¦ Chris LaHaye was covering the Louisiana high school softball tourney and saw this weird glove, which looks like it might have been designed for Aquaman or something. ”¦ In case you missed it in Phil’s post from Saturday, the Pats may wear their throwbacks five times this season! ”¦ The Jags’ color-shift helmet looks a lot more green and a lot less black out in the sunlight. ”¦ Darrent Williams’s number is back in circulation (with thanks to Chris Flinn). ”¦ Small rant about something that bugs the shit out of me: Why do people insist on using the term “Brand Jordan” (as in “Derek Jeter wears Brand Jordan wristbands“)? We don’t say “Brand Nike” or “Brand Puma” — why the fuck should we say “Brand Jordan”? Marketing newspeak like this is just repellant, and I refus to go along with it. Let’s just call it Brand Douchebag and get it over with. ”¦ And so it has come to this: a high school team wear caps that are clearly modeled after MLB batting practice caps. Very sad (with thanks to Dominick Carfello). ”¦ Coupla interesting things about Manny Pacquaio’s trunks on Saturday night: (1) Very unusual “Q” on his waitband. And (2) He had a swoosh on both legs, which seems like a bit much, even for Nike. And hey, speaking of a bit much, nice to see that the ring ropes were sponsored. ”¦ Lots of pics from Saturday’s great Mariners/A’s throwback game here. ”¦ Chuck Nolan Jr. was doing some research and came across a couple of interesting high school football and basketball uniforms in the Cleveland Plain Dealer archives. ”¦ Alyssa Miller reports that the Geelong Cats (that’s an Aussie-rules football team, mate) are wearing 150th-anniversary uniforms. “They normally wear a uniform (a guernsey, it’s called) with alternating blue and white stripes,” she says, “but starting July 18th they will wear these, with the solid blue stripes being replaced by stripes consisting of tiny text that lists the names of every player ever to represent the Cats.” ”¦ Latest Wilponian fiasco: players can’t see the game from Shea’s visiting bullpen. For details, scroll down to the “Mets bullpen alterations” section of Ken Davidoff’s Sunday column. ”¦ Incidentally, that portion of Ken’s column included a note that I found interesting: “MLB prefers that the bullpens have no televisions at all.” I assume this has something to do with sign-stealing, but Ken didn’t elaborate in print, so I sent him a note asking if he could explain. He said he’d check. Will advise. ”¦ John Muir says he saw this “in a section of DC where hockey players would not regularly be found. Not sure if it’s actually the Plymouth Whalers (OHL) or just an ad. Out of place, to say the least.” ”¦ Check out this shot of Jack Kemp. The TV number is 15, but his chest number is either 5 or else a really off-center 15 (good spot by Joel D. Ford). ”¦ Randy Brown is being forced to sell his NBA championship rings (with thanks to James Huening). ”¦ Beware the pig AIDS, or you could end up like this! Actually, that’s Poró, the official mascot of the FIBA under-19 basketball tourney (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Also from Jeremy: he Perth Glory of the A-League in Australia changed their logo from this to this. Details here. ”¦ Nice 1971 shot of Danny Murtaugh and his grandson Timmy. “Poor Timmy didn’t get the memo about the switch to double-knits the previous season,” notes Morris Levin. ”¦ Interesting item regarding Todd Helton’s uni number here (with thanks to Bo Baize, who also sent along scans of an article about the Mt Rushmore construction crew baseball team). ”¦ For reasons not worth getting into, I was lucky enough to spend Friday night at Per Se, where I was part of a group of food writers who’d been invited to sample a seven-course tasting menu with Armagnac pairings (yes, it was very, very good). As we all exchanged pleasantries throughout the evening, several people asked me, “So do you write exclusively about food and drink?,” which led to some very entertaining facial expressions when I replied, “Actually, I write primarily about sports uniform design. Could you pass the baguette?” ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Adam Dunn’s typo jersey was auctioned off for charity. It went for $8,500. ”¦ My Sunday newspaper’s coupon supplement included this. Looks like the kid’s actually wearing long pants with the stirrups pulled up over them. ”¦ Jeremy Brahm liked yesterday’s entry so much that he found some cool stuff in the Life archives, including this great girls’ basketball shot (is that Ricky Ricardo coaching the team?). Love the uni numbers on the warm-up togs. And look at those little shoulder pleat/panel thingies! Looks like they had an inverted pleat on the back, too (additional pics here and here; home uni with similar design here). ”¦ Jeremy also found several shots that show the old-fashioned narrow lane. ”¦ Last graf of this story mentions that Kansas State used an older uni design for their spring scrimmage. Not sure what this portends, if anything, for their fall uniforms (with thanks to Ben Traxel). ”¦ Last week’s ESPN column, in which I trashed the Jaguars’ new uniforms, has apparently been making the rounds among Jags-centric message boards, because I’ve been getting lots of e-mails like this one: “The jaguars new jerseys own, if you think otherwise go fist yourself, fucking moron.” Stay classy, dude. The funniest missives have been the ones accusing me of perpetuating ESPN’s “bias against small-market teams.” So true — that’s why ESPN never covers the Packers. ”¦ Interesting shot here of Al Rollins. What’s with all that ruffled fringe on the sleeves — is that what passed for padding back in 1954? (As forwarded by Tris Wykes.) ”¦ Hey, what’s this? Houston’s long-lost road grays, which they dusted off yesterday cuz the Braves already had dibs on wearing dumb-ass red jerseys. … No photos, but last night’s episode of King de la Hill, which was all about Bobby being in Little League, was a veritable stirrup-fest. Naturally, most of today’s Little Leaguers don’t wear stirrups, but this just accentuates the fact that when graphic artists depict baseball players, they almost always include stirrups, because they instinctively understand that that’s what baseball players are supposed to look like. … Oh wait, Doug Keklak got a screen grab from last night’s episode after all. … Not uni-related, but this video makes spectacular use of little aspects of urban design (awesome find, Kirsten). ”¦ Outmania! ”¦ Carlos Ruiz appears to have a new uni number (with thanks to Mike Meech). … Williams and Amherst marked the 150th anniversary of the first college baseball game with some not-very-convincing throwbacks. Further details here (with thanks to Colin Morton).
FYI: Lots of broken links on the alternate bobble page…(hockey bobble had only one link that worked) Great surprise that this is posted so early; a clear sign that it’s gonna be a good week!
The hockey goaltender with the “fluffy” padding on his arms is actually named Al Rollins. He won the Vezina Trophy one year as the NHL’s best but that padding, if that’s what it is, strikes me as odd. Rollins’ stats and career: link

The annoying song is “I Love It Loud” by Kiss. That’s neither here nor there.
I never understood the appeal of putting annoying midi files on your webpage and thinking that you were somehow cool or trendy in doing so……
Loved the write-up on the bobbles; what an extraordinary talent and imagination. I still talk about this story on the Cat-bowling!!
Regarding the interest in custom bobbles, I\’d be very interested in making a few orders. I\’m from Baltimore as well and would love to see what he could do with some Oriole throwbacks, Bullet throwbacks, or even some Natty Bo customizations.
Count me in Paul!
robert marshall…DIY god (and genius)…just … wow
count me in for a custom bobble order
/that is all
wow. Rob Marshall is a DIY Genius! i would definitely like to order a custom bobble! let me know if you go through with the plans
Alright, Uniwatchers. Let’s see who comes up with this photo, courtesy of today’s Peter King column on SI.com:
Did you know Hank Stram, on the hottest days of Kansas City training camp, used to wear a doubleknit, basketball-type, sleeveless, red-and-gold Chiefs tank top with matching basketball shorts, both with a snazzy Chiefs logo? The Chiefs are in the process of inventing a Hall of Fame for the grand reopening of a refurbished Arrowhead Stadium in 2010, and the incredibly bizarre Hank costume will be included in the exhibit.
I liked the townball game that Amherst and Williams played. Would have liked to have seen one of the players use an axe handle (it has a flat end, better for placement of the ball and a big freakin sweet spot!).
Tat Casey at the Bat in baseball cards is just plain awesome. The Photoshop skills; the assembly of all those fonts… and make sure to zoom in on Billy Ripken’s card, or the poem won’t scan right!
Love that new Aussie Rules football jersey — they could maybe dump the advertisement, though? At least there’s no NOB; I love those huge numbers that fill the guy’s whole back.
The Braves really look silly at home in red. The striping doesn’t match the pants at all. And considering how boring and insipid the Astros look in gray, I can’t help but wonder if the Braves intentionally chose red so that the ‘Stros would have to look dull and forgettable.
As for the Tigers’ orange:
A number of teams, such as the Phillies and Orioles, used their BP jerseys as “streakbreaker” uniforms in the midst of a long swoon. They were attempts to change the team’s luck.
Check out Cal State Stanislaus, looking all fancy in their Bosox-style stirrups
Too bad they ruined them with those awful tops with the jersey piping that clashes with the awful underarm football-style striping. Those jerseys are a train wreck.
Outmania! on a rainy Monday after a rainy weekend is uplifting. Outmania Rules!!
The screen grab of the Tigers orange BP jersey has to be from a spring training game. Note the orange home-run line on the fence in the background. None of the stadiums in Toronto or Detroit had orange home-run lines.
I’d be very interested in ordering a customized bobble. Good stuff!

Either his pants or his stirrups need to be lower, one or the other. That’s a real ’70s “geek”/Little League look. BAD NEWS BEARS is not the benchmark for how MLBers wore their unis back then. Generally speaking, kids hiked up their stirrups to be like big leaguers, but the youth pants available weren’t long enough to complete the right look. The result was a high stirrup, high pant look that actually was extremely rare at the MLB level. Sure, someone will spend time digging to find photos of a few players who wore them that way, and say I’m wrong. But the fact that they will have to dig just shows those players were the few exceptions that prove the rule.

BTW…When I checked the TV listings for last night’s SN Baseball, I was disappointed uni-wise.
However, because of my love for the game, I tuned in anyway and saw a very well dressed ballplayer.
Ian Kinsler, in addition to being a pretty good player, dresses the part:

I’d be interested in a custom bobble definately, they look awesome and the bobble motion is far superior to stadium giveaways
. . . Last week’s ESPN column, in which I trashed the Jaguars’ new uniforms, has apparently been making the rounds among Jags-centric message boards, because I’ve been getting lots of e-mails like this one: “The jaguars new jerseys own, if you think otherwise go fist yourself, fucking moron.” Stay classy, dude. The funniest missives have been the ones accusing me of perpetuating ESPN’s “bias against small-market teams.” So true – that’s why ESPN never covers the Packers. . .
And this is why I try to stay away from Jags’ fan message boards. Lots of negative energy with those folks. Paul didn’t like the new jerseys, he gave his reasons why, and I respect that. Uni design is not something worth sending hate mail over.
Loved the bobbleheads. They obviously required a tremendous amount of dedication and skill to create.
One thing I noticed about the Reading Phil’s powder blues is that the shoes don’t match the socks and piping. Red baseball cleats only come in scarlet these days. I guess they don’t make them in maroon, as they once did for the Phillies players during the 70s and 80s.
The DIY bobbleheads/nodders are awesome. I have an old baseball Cardinals nodder from the 60’s that was given to me when I was a boy. I’d be interested in one of Robert’s custom jobs.
Rob Marshall: Awesome work…I will definitely become a client!
Even without the stirrups and hose…one of my favorite baseball unis:

I don’t know if this has been brought up, but I gotta think the new 49ers stripes have more to do with Reebok not wanting to put Adidas style 3-stripes on anything they do.
If you look at any of the cheaper 49er jerseys for fans you can see the stripes are designed to angle down. It’s not a cut issue on the player jerseys.
holy geez, robert!!! you went above and FAR beyond! thats all i can really say. this post made me SO happy!
i’ll definitely support the cause! count me in for a bobble-head!

Or it could be from pregame warmups? Even now, the Tigers seem to wear their home whites and road grays most of the time in spring training action.

This picture had me thinking. What color shoes did the Phillies wear when they wore the powder blues?
Since the opposing team is also in a colored jersey, that Tigers game is probably spring training or a game in Japan or something. Not many teams, if any, went color on color back in 1993. The breakout year for colored jerseys was 1994.
On another note: Why can’t MLB get serious about requiring socks or stirrups? It seems the NFL is obsessed with sock lengths and fines players for violating the rules; why can’t MLB do the same thing? These pants are looking riddiculous.
I will buy a custom-made bobble if you can make one of me. I can send you a picture of myself.

Thereby inventing a whole new level of geekiness that is even dumber than pajama bottoms. Pretty much the way I imagine Napoleon Dynamite would wear a baseball uni.

but, thats what his borad ACTUALLY looks like, no?
The “Casey at the Bat” baseball card project was many shades of brilliant.
But (and I suppose I owe this question to Thayer, z.l.) Casey, slugger that he is, would surely have been intentionally walked with first base open and two outs. A single there scores two runs with the runners moving, and you can’t give Casey the chance to beat you outright with a three-run blast. Walk Casey, and pitch to the next guy with the force on.
Although the opposing manager might somehow have known about Casey’s very selective eye.

Custom bobbleheads? Yes.
The baseball card “Casy at the Bat” is almost equally fabulous.

Cecil Fielder?
and turner ward…very good matt
OK…Here are the facts:
1. The caption mentions that the photo is from 1993.
2. The two players pictured are
I’d be interested in one of the custom bobbleheads, in fact I already have it picked out in my mind!
a. Turner Ward, who played for the Blue Jays in 93
b. Cecil Fielder, Prince’s Dad, of the Tigers, who played in 154 of their 162 games.
link
3. During the regular season, they played each other 13 times.
link
Other than that, I’ve got nothing.
The outfiled wall and individual statistics are gonna have to come into play here.
I TOTALLY wish i have TIVO…so i can share with what i saw. i wonder if you y’all caught the 6am (PST) Sportscenter news highlights of the Detroit and Anaheim? At the highlights of 2OT, it popped up a fact about Wings out-shooting the Ducks 29-7 or whatever the number was, however the box showed: Los Angeles Dodgers with Wings logo with the statement. oh i so wish i snapped a picture of that.
That’s not a tunic, that’s a doctored up surplie, worn by servers at Catholic Mass over a Cassock. Hi-larious! Where do I get me one?

Sorry, I’m hooked;
According to Baseball-Reference.com, here are the dates that the Blue Jays and Tigers played in 1993:
5/11: Ward DNP
5/12: Ward DNP
5/13: Ward DNP
6/10: Ward PH 0-1 Fielder 1-3 double, rs, rbi
6/11: Ward DNP
6/12: Ward DNP
6/13: Ward DNP
7/29: Ward LF 0-3 scored 1 run Fielder 1-5 1 rbi
7/30: Ward PR/LF 0-1 Fielder 1-5
7/31: Ward PR/LF 0-1 Fielder 1-5
8/1: Ward LF 0-3 Fielder DNP
9/14: Ward DNP
9/15: Ward DNP
So there were only a few occasions during the regular season, when they would have both played together.
One omitted statistic bothers me…Ward might have gone 0-3 but walks are not counted as at-bats.
if he didn’t come around to score, there would have been no record of him being on base.

Don’t they run Sportscenter 13 more times today?
On the Tigers/Cecil Fielder pic…the fence line doesn’t look orange to me…looks like a normal yellow line that tops outfield walls. Should be able to figure out which park that is, at least.
Or my hypothesis could go straight to hell, because the screen was showing a replay from a former year!
If I had anything in the way of disposable income right now, I’d order a custom bobblehead in a second. I’ve always wanted one of those traditional-looking ones (with the cherub faces), and those are just so impressive that I don’t know what to do… except, one day, take a sculpting class.

They don’t have the full box scores? Arn’t BB listed down in the bottom somewhere? Honestly haven’t look at a box score in years.

The bobbles are outstanding! Depending on how custom they can be, I could be up for one.
i would like to say thank you to anyone who has liked the project because you get it. not because you like my work, but because you get the fact that it is the layers that tell the story and create the texture. this speaks to unis and life.
sales:
i don’t know exactly how we/i am going to do this, but in regards to my sports related art, i consider this site to be my gallery, so i would probably make it available here only, and perhaps only to people who officially get it, so get that membership.
one of the reasons i want to sell these here only is that i want them to go to people who get it. if you got through today’s post, and you must have, you know how long they take, and i can only produce so many at a time, so they won’t be cheap, because they are not cheaply made. but i promise you this, when you get yours in the mail, you will get a nudge.
i look forward to painting up everything from a tequilla sunrise to a mr snowman, and yes the crazier the better. but as far as how much, and how you order, i will try to work that out today. if you have any specific questions, i will be monitoring the comments section all day while i work in the studio.

if it is in the paint job 100%, if it is in the casting 2%. the form is what it is, i can carve away, but add nothing. i obviously can mix and match head and body, and will eventually have one for basketball, soccer, etc. and those heads and bodies could be interchanged too.
’93 ASG was at Camden Yards…Fielder, yes Ward, no
7.29.93:Ward walked once at Skydome
7.31.93: Ward walked once at Skydome in this game as well
That’s it for 1993. I could not find any spring training info.
From Peter King’s usual Monday tome. This would not be a pretty site
did you know Hank Stram, on the hottest days of Kansas City training camp, used to wear a doubleknit, basketball-type, sleeveless, red-and-gold Chiefs tank top with matching basketball shorts, both with a snazzy Chiefs logo? The Chiefs are in the process of inventing a Hall of Fame for the grand reopening of a refurbished Arrowhead Stadium in 2010, and the incredibly bizarre Hank costume will be included in the exhibit. I tried to figure out what it reminds me of when I saw it on my recent draft trip to Kansas City, and the only thing I could come up with is: early ABA uniform.

love the bobbles, would totally buy!!!
The Colts-Packers photo shows Paul Hornung on his way to completing a 65-yard TD pass from Bart Starr. The game was played in Baltimore on Dec. 12, 1965 in a heavy fog. It was Hornung’s fifth TD that day in a game (including an earlier 50-yd TD pass) that put the Packers a half game up on the Colts. The next week, the Colts won while the Packers were tied, setting up their famous playoff game won by the Packers (13-10) on a disputed field goal in overtime. (This was the game where halfbackTom Matte played quarterback due to injuries to Colt QBs John Unitas and Gary Cuozzo.)
By the way, if you look to the upper left in the picture, you will see a score of 20-47 — that game was to end up 20-61, as the Bears beat the 49ers in the rain, with Gale Sayers tying the NFL record of six TD’s in one game. Quite a day for individual scoring.

I totally get it. I and I believe in supporting art wherever and whenever I can — I like going to art fairs, and even if I can’t afford an original, I’ll try to buy a print that I like to keep the artist going. And I have dug a little deeper for friends of mine who are trying to make it as artists (who, luckily, happen to be extremely talented).
Whenever I fall into that big pile of cash I know is out there, it’ll be all art, all the time. In the meantime, I’ll just have to wait, and then maybe I could get that excellent hockey bobblehead of my dreams, haha.

Hmmm. Would like to see that. Would not like to see Hank Stram wearing it, though. As they say over on Deadspin, nightmare fuel.
Paul, about the issue of “Brand Jordan” being known as “Brand Jordan”: it’s what the company wants itself to be known as. I think there were some press releases/articles where they do refer to themselves as “Brand Jordan” or “Jordan Brand.” I’m not sure why they choose to refer to themselves as such but perhaps it’s an issue you can bring up with their high-ranking officials.

a custom WV Mountaineer is going to look great on my shelf.
I think the bobblehead designs are terrific. This coming from someone who is not a fan AT ALL of them as a current (and past) trend. I wish they’d go the way of the dodo bird, or beenie babies, so it would re-open the door for pennants, plastic sundae helmets, batting gloves, caps, etc., as trinkets given away to fans.
I cannot stand bobbleheads. But I absolutely support those of you who DO … therefore, I vote for the Robert Marshall project.
Paul, I emailed you my pic about a year ago when we first discussed it on motownsports, but we never really established where the game was being played (and still havent!)
1993 is written on the back of that picture, but its possible that Mrs.Dugal got it wrong and its actually from 92 or 94.
always liked the mountaineers because they traditionally follow a simple rule for football uniforms, and that is no white unless it is necessary. always like major harris, sam huff is nails, and i think you would be a great additiion to the big ten if notre dame continues to be a snob.
As a Pats fan, I’m pretty stoked that they are going to be wearing the retro unis for at least 5 games.
I would love to see them take Pat Patriot back as the primary logo for the season. It would be great to see him everywhere!

that’s the point, i agree with you. when the baseball card market topped out, bobbles became the new en vogue thing, and it took away their heart. the point of this is to do it right, give it back it’s heart. that way if you like the old school felts, and ice cream helmets and stuff, this is the one that fits in with that ethic. i am in total agreement with you.
Boo to Williams and Amhurst. All that tradition, and a great forum to show off the 150th anniversary of the rivalry and you totally cheap out on the throwback uniforms and make it look like the graduation at a clown college.

While I was reading the essay on how the bobble’s were made, I was thinking two things:
1. I really, really hope he starts selling these, and
2. if so, I hope he will do custom paint jobs
So, count me absolutely in for the purchase of a Robert Marshall bobblehead.

I think that explains your situation with this perfectly. Before I started a little DIY jersey I looked into getting a custom soccer jersey, but to get something custom made is really expensive, which is understandable considering a place producing it for you may only be making that one specific piece for you and you alone. I know if those who get it are going to be given priority for this than I’m going to stop pitter pattering and get a membership soon here.(Damn it, why can’t Paul make an LSU jersey exception this one time? Purple accents, especially for LSU’s home white jerseys, aren’t bad! No really, they aren’t! I guess I’ll just have to choose from one of the other eight or ten teams I follow obsessively.)
And Robert, you make a point to emphasize the texture and the details on these bobbles and it’s those things that make these 100% cooler than anything would ever be were it mass produced. Kudos to you!

I was working the bases last week for a 7/8th grade game, and 1B was wearing these wrap around shades, even tho it was overcast. So I finally asked her if she always wore them when it was so dark, she answered that they were prescription glasses….with the photo gray lenses that change…..

Yep. Its a shame that the city never really fixed up the park, although if I remember correctly a lot of that had to do with the taxpayers. Unless it was practice, why would two teammates be
a. playing first base
b. taking a lead off of first
According to my painstaking research, there were only 5 regular season games between 1991 and 1993, in which:
a. both Ward and Fielder appeared
b. when Ward would have been on first base while Cecil was in the field.
1992
4.9.92 @ Detroit Ward 1-3, Fielder 0-3
10.2.92 @ Toronto Ward PH 0-1, Fielder 2-5
10.4.92 @ Toronto Ward 2-3 3 Runs, Fielder DH 0-5

Personally, I like the simpler jersey with the K-State wordmark. I can’t believe how unbelievably busy the double sleeve stripes are.
Purple and gray is a nice look, and K-State does it justice (which was pointed out in a post a couple years ago when they played Oklahoma State.) link

no brainer, for sure yes.
That ls K-State jersey nearly made me hurl. I love it when uniforms make me do that.
around post 119, MEMAL makes me think of something… and MEMAL, i\’m not ripping at all, but maybe a question for uniwatch:
how many teams can you be emotionally vested in???
can you possibly spread yourself too thin?
i can think of a few teams i really like for a few different reasons. example, i\’m a teemu selanne fan, therfore i like the ducks, and love the fact that they tied the series against detroit… but i\’m a die-hard penguins fan 110%. i really couldn\’t imagine feeling that way about any other team in the NHL. another example, i like the indians a lot, and they are by far my favorite american league team… am i crushed when they lose in the playoffs? certainly not. because the pirates (and all their crap) are my favorite team! i know this is a total homer post, but you see where i\’m going with this?
p.s.
if you even think i pretend to like any other team other than the obvious, then you should go enjoy a steelers sunday…

FWIW, on the Fielder – Ward photo, I don’t remember the Jays wearing a blue alt in games in 1992 or 1993 (and those were the world series years when I watched a LOT of games). Dressed to the Nines has them wearing the blue alt starting in 1994, which I know is not definitive.

Five of the games were played at Tokyo Dome, one each at Koshien (open air & grass), Seibu (open air & turf, no orange home run line) and Heiwadai (open air & turf). At that time I don’t think that Tokyo Dome used a home run line, and even now they don’t. But maybe, they put one up for the tour?

He only played 18 games in 1992. So, I think it has to be Duane Ward and from batting practice.
Duane Ward not Wade, sorry for the basketball references.

Amazing job on the bobble-heads! I don’t know that I want to order one, but I just had an idea: with all the DIYers that have been popping up lately, why not make blanks available for purchase? I’m far from sure about this, but I think it is an exhibition game played in Vancouver prior to the start of a season (early 90’s). It’s definitely Toronto, and if I remember Vancouver stadium had the orange line on their outfield fence.

No dice. Your answer is a 60s option.
Found a rare pic of the underlined “Mets” BP jersey. I guess the Inaugural Season patch isn’t the only large square sleeve thingie in Mets history.

I guess it’s not just a 60’s option. There was that brief period in the late 90s, before they screwed it up, that the jersey was as God intended.

I don’t know that I want to order one, but I just had an idea: with all the DIYers that have been popping up lately, why not make blanks available for purchase? Plus after people have painted their own, I assume they would post links to photos of their creations and that would be even more advertising for you. Think about it, it’s genius!

That’s fair.
I can see creating a blank bobble from scratch, knowing that the whole point will be people customizing them, but not wanting anybody to do the same with these.

The Jays appear to be wearing gray pants, which they would not have worn at home during the season. Like I said, I bet it’s a Japanese game.
And you can rule out spring training since the filed is artificial turf.
I’m far from sure about this, but I think it is an exhibition game played in Vancouver prior to the start of a season (early 90’s). It’s definitely Toronto, and if I remember Vancouver stadium had the orange line on their outfield fence.
That’s definitely BC Place, the teams are wearing blue and orange, I think that’s the game in question.

It was a four game exhibition series in B.C. Place stadium in the 1993 preseason, in which the second game was Toronto vs. Detroit.

That is the Plymouth Whalers bus, but I believe after their season is over, the bus charter company rents that bus out like any of the others they have. The Whalers season ended about 3 weeks ago, so I doubt the team was in Washington.

Edgar busting up his leg in that game is one of the bigger reasons he DH’d for almost all of the next 11 years! He was a pretty serviceable third baseman before that.

My theory was that Ovechkin’s helmet got broken or something (that was right after a scrum with Kunitz in front of the net) and with only 15 seconds in the period, he just got someone’s helmet to finish out the period. But Bradley doesn’t wear a visor as far as I know ( link ), so I have no idea…

He did this in the last series when he lost his helmet. He went to the bench and retrieved Bradley’s helmet before continuing in the play.
Why? No idea.

It’s just that I imagine they’re absolutely shocked that such a thing could happen to an organization so Chosen.
Ricko, I’m going to ask for a slight retraction. At this time of your post, I was learning that the best man of my wedding WAS the one most seriously injured, and there was a chance he’d never walk again.
About a half-second before the contraption fell down, the moment wasn’t about football – it was about life.
I’m sure no harm was meant given the information at the time. But Rich Behm is a close friend first and foremost, before he’s an employee of the “Chosen”.

Was thinking about that, and I’m sorry that it turned out the way it did. At the time of my post, all the reports (and I checked three different cable networks to be certain) said no one had been seriously injured. In fact, most of those reports said that only half dozen or so people had been inside at the time. Obviously, those reports were premature and inaccurate. Had I known what actually happened I’d never have posted what I did.
Although, it was reported this morning that the Cowboys did not have the structure inspected after it was re-roofed, as is required by law in Irvine. So I don’t think the story is over yet. At least not the legal ramifications of it.
